Contact me at (walkerferox AT gmail D0T com) and let me know if I've made a mistake or overlooked something. It's probably a good idea to put "Monster Hunter" or something in the subject line of the email. This is a bit misleading. It takes two or more Tranqs to knock out most monsters, not one as this seems to imply. (thanks Samanosuke!) pg. 5 - Abandoning A Quest - The guide reads on page five under Viewing The Quest List, "However, try not to abandon any quests that require a contract fee." Also, on that same page under Contract Fees it reads, "However, if the hunter attempts to complete the quest and fails or abandons the quest, the money is lost." In my tests when you abandon a quest you do get your money back. pg. 8 - Weapon Sharpness: "With each reduction in weapon status, the weapon icon below the Stamina gauge changes shape and color." False: There are several states of weapon sharpness and when you have the glowing yellow weapon icon you're at Max sharpness, one level of reduction from this simply removes the glowing yellow color. It does not change the shape of the icon until the next reduction. A minor detail but incorrect nonetheless. pg. 8 - Out of stamina abilities slightly incorrect. You can still dodge while the bar is red but only once. pg. 9 - "Stun" in game is called "Knock Out". The guide also calls Stun "Unconscious" on pages 59-62. pg. 9 - Paralysis & Stun: The terms are used incorrectly in several places. In the game, a weapon or ammo that causes "Stun" will result in the effects seen in the picture on page 9 under Paralysis. The picture for Stun shows what the games calls "Knock Out", the same thing that happens when a Gypceros or Flashbomb attacks a creature. So to correct this, when you see "Paralysis" think "Stun" and when you see "Stun" think "Knock Out". See the item above this one for additional clarification. pg. 10 - Monster Eye: Reads, "This status occurs when a fearsome boss monster, such as a wyvern of alpha raptor, sights the player character. This is true except in the case of Khezu. He's blind so you do not get the Monster Eye Icon displayed. pg. 13 - Pitfall Traps: Reads, "Utilizing a Pitfall Trap takes almost a full minute..." This seems to imply that deploying up a trap takes almost 60 seconds. Not true, it only takes a few seconds; four or five if I remember correctly. However, ReiGamer points out an additional perspective on the guide's use of "utilizing" in that it could mean the total time a wyvern is trapped in the pitfall trap. And as ReiGamer mentioned, even this would be incorrect as the duration a wyvern is trapped in a pitfall trap varies based on the state of the wyvern (frenzied or normal). It is roughly half the total time trapped if they are frenzied. (thanks ReiGamer!) pg. 13 - Second paragraph on right-hand side: Where wyverns sleep is mentioned for only Forest & Hills and Jungle maps. It fails to mention where they go to sleep in the Desert (3 I think) and Volcanic (no idea where) maps. pg. 13 - Penalties: "Death of a hunter..." This is an incorrect term. When a players health reaches zero in-game the game says you have fallen "unconsciousness." Also a minor issue but, it also fails to mention that after you fall unconsciousness, since you are not "dead", you can return to the battle and continue on. pg. 14 - Abandoning Or Failing A Quest: Reads, "Any contract fees paid are also lost." False. pg. 14 - Abandoning Or Failing A Quest: Reads, "If the hunter abandoning the quest is the one that initiated it, all other hunters are returned to the tavern as well." False on two points: One, if the quest initiator abandons the quest you are NOT taken out of the quest. Two, when you abandon a quest you are not returned to the tavern, you are returned to the town selection screen. pg. 14 - Abandoning Or Failing A Quest: Reads, "Similar to abandoning a quest, any contract fees paid are also lost." Partially true. When you fail a quest you loose your contract fee, but this is not similar to how abandoning a quest works. See the entry above this one for more info. pg. 14 - Reward Materials: Reads, "The number of materials awarded depends on the number of open inventory slots remaining in the hunter's inventory." This SEEMS false as I often run out of slots for reward items and must then choose which currently held items I wish to replace with reward items. pg. 14 - Level 11 in the game is "PathWalker". pg. 14 - Level 17 in the game is "Glorious Battler". pg. 16 - The Guest House: It fails to mention how you obtain either Gold or Silver tickets by staying in a room for 25 times. Gold Tickets are obtained by staying in the King and Queen rooms, while Silver Tickets are obtained by staying in the Rook and Bishop rooms. You receive a ticket every 25th time you stay in a room up until your 150th visit. After 150 there are no more tickets given out. I'm not 100% sure but the system works something like this: (it's the same for each room) Lower Rooms: Rook = Silver, Queen = Gold Queen Room: 21 Gold Tickets Max 25th Stay = 1 Gold Ticket 50th Stay = 2 Gold Tickets 75th Stay = 3 Gold Tickets 100th Stay = 4 Gold Tickets 125th Stay = 5 Gold Tickets 150th Stay = 6 Gold Tickets Higher Rooms: Bishop = Silver, King = Gold King Room: 42 Gold Tickets Max? 25th Stay = 2 Gold Tickets 50th Stay = 4 Gold Tickets 75th Stay = 6 Gold Tickets 100th Stay = 8 Gold Tickets 125th Stay = 10 Gold Tickets 150th Stay = 12 Gold Tickets (thanks ReiGamer for the clarification!) pg. 16 - Second paragraph states, "While sitting at the table, press the down directional button to lie down on bench and sleep." It's Left on the D-Pad not down to literally lie down on the bench, the part you sit on, and sleep. Down on the D-Pad puts your head down on the table to sleep. pg. 16 - Second paragraph stats, "...to lie down on bench..." it's missing the word, "the". pg. 16 - The Guest House never mentions the pig! Also of interest is that in the screenshot there is no pig next to the "Ordering Food" paragraph. (maybe he scared it off) NOTE: "ilikemadness" reports that Capcom told him that petting the pig boosts luck much in the same manner "Good Luck" skill works only it's, I guess, on a per quest basis. pg. 16 - Ordering Food: "Some combinations increase a statistic during the next quest, or until the character dies." While technically correct it's poorly explained. Stamina boost will increase your stamina bar but it will still deplete at a normal rate. All the other boosts last until you fall unconscious, not "die" as there's no character death in the game per se. pg. 17/18 - Bishop Room & King Room show same picture. The King room picture is incorrect. pg. 19 - Market Specials: "This is a great time to stock up on expensive, repeat buy items like BBQ Spits, Hot Drinks, Cool Drinks, Potions, Trap Tools, etc." I'm not sure why a BBQ Spit is said to be a repeat buy item since they don't wear out and you can only loose one if you sell it, Discard it or Gypceros steals it from you. pg. 19 - Life In The Town - Second paragraph about unlocking the rooms via completion of online quests. I'm not 100% sure if it's accurate as the rooms open up when you hit certain HR levels. I'm not sure if the quests they show as needing to be cleared to open a room correlate with HR levels. I suspect what's written there is incorrect. pg. 72 - Special Event Vouchers: The paragraph states, "These vouchers can only be used online; in the offline game, the vouchers do not appear in the player's inventory or item box." False. They do appear in both places offline. pg. 131 - and onward, fails to mention special online event quests completely. pg. 111 - and onward, several times "Slay [monster] Via Head" is mentioned in the quest chart. This is referring to the Japanese version of the game where you can apparently behead a monster. You cannot behead a monster in the USA version of the game. (see page 139's walkthrough for a mention of cutting off a monsters head) (thanks ZeroEdge!) ================================================================================ 002 **** TYPOS, LAYOUT & PRINTING ERRORS **** ================================================================================ pg. 4 - The Eight Basic Character Types: Some people have emailed me saying that the first couple and the fourth are the same when they should be different pictures. I can't decide. The colors are slightly different. pg. 12 - The chart on the bottom right of this page suggests near the bottom that you should carry 10 Antidotes and what for parenthetically. Inside the parenthesis "Rathians" seems to have an unnecessary "s" at the end. Shouldn't it be "Rathian" instead? pg. 13 - Basic Wyvern Stratagy: The last word in the third paragraph is "tim", this should read "time." pg. 13 - The second paragraph on the right-hand side speaks about how to tell when a monster is wounded and near death. "Many wyverns indicate that the battle is almost won by trying to limp away. Or in the case of the Gypceros, the dying creature feigns death." It does not mention that, albeit rare, Gypceros DOES limp when near death and that this occurs usually after one or two feigned deaths. pg. 20 - Shop Cost & Special label descriptions reversed. pg. 21 - Eager Cleaver's CM, second line starts with "spoid Bladefin". Part of the first word is truncated. pg. 24 - Iron Devil: Requirements, Gravios head is misspelled as "Gravois". (thanks John5000!) pg. 25 - Hammers are not in alphabetical order. pg. 29 - Odyssey: Gravios is misspelled as "Gravois". (thanks John5000!) pg. 31 - Prototype Saw-Slicer: For the creation items it reads, ".Rubbery Hide x10" the beginning period is not needed. pg. 42 - The text in the Dragon description box reads, "New dragon copy here New dragon copy here New dragon copy here New dragon copy here". pg. 77 - Rath picture is printed twice, overlapping itself. pg. 102 - Volcanic Zone - Area 1, Location 3 - at the bottom the percentage for Earth Crystal is improperly justified. pg. 103 - Volcanic Zone - Area 8 - Location 4 the text about Ruststone and 1% is out of alignment. pg. 113 - "Slay the Yian Kut-Ku" - Walkthrough: second paragraph has the sentence, "If the pink monster is obvious to the presence of a hunter..." He probably means "oblivious" instead of "obvious". pg. 120 - "Slay the Genprey": The chart reads that this quest takes place in the Swamp Zone, yet the accompanying picture is of Genprey in the Desert Zone. (thanks Jesse!) pg. 128 - "The Shadow in the Cave". This offline mission says it's in the swamp but the screenshots shown are from the Jungle map. (thanks to SpacePirateKhan & Jesse!) pg. 129 - "Handle With Care!" Urgent. In the info panel it reads, Time: 50Min. but in the screenshot the timer shows a limit of only 30Min. (for comparison take a look at the clock in the screenshot to it's right on that page which shows 50Min.) (thanks Zacha Bradoa!) pg. 166 - "Gypceros: Venomous Terror" at the bottom, "Slay The Gypceros:" lists Novacrystal as a 1% chance but there is a typo there, it's missing the actual % sign. pg. 173 - Basarios: Unseen Peril - For Area: the "V" in Volcanic Zone is misplaced. It's on the far left as "Area:V OLCANIC ZONE". (thanks Yamatadragon911!) pg. 187 - "The Legendary Black Dragon": The chart's font is of a different point size causing some justification problems. Mainly the 2000 for the HR Points Awarded line is spaced too far to the right. (thanks John!) ================================================================================ 003 **** WEAPON STATS: GREAT SWORDS **** ================================================================================ pg. 21 - Eager Cleaver: Attack is 720 (not 420) pg. 21 - Eternal Anihilator: Attack is 912 (not 915) (thanks Sera!) pg. 21 - Eternal Annihilator: Reads Ratholos Plates are (HR17) when they are available starting with 4* quests online and 5* quests offline, specifically the Troublesome Pair quest offline. (thanks Sera!) NOTE: "ilikemadness" says that according to Capcom plates are NOT listed as an offline item after he contacted them and asked. NOTE: "Haohmaru" and many other people confirm that you can indeed get plates in the offline game. So it's settled. pg. 21 - Several Sword Rarity numbers are incorrect, show ATT instead? (will make list eventually) pg. 21 - Reads Black Katana MK II is only 8xx attack and defense+2 when it is actually 912 attack with defense+3. pg. 21 - Dragon Swords - I'm hearing that the stats for these are incorrect. Unsure how exactly at the moment. pg. 21 - "Dragon Agito" picture is wrong, that's a Golem Blade. (thanks Bloodsniper!) pg. 22 - Iron Sword and Iron Sword+ show pictures of Iron Hammer. pg. 22 - Halberd: Attack is 864 (not 854) pg. 22 - Halberd's Rare and Attack stats are misprinted. pg. 22 - Fire Dragonsword: Attack is 768 (not 864) pg. 23 - At the top right "Agito" should read "Tactical Blade". (thanks Bloodsniper!) pg. 23 - Sieglinde and Valkyre Blade have the wrong pictures. They should look like Siegmund, but instead of being red, they should have a lime green color. (thanks Skeletor619!) pg. 23 - GMR Chrome Heart's weapon attack is not mentioned. It is 816. ================================================================================ 004 **** WEAPON STATS: SWORDS **** ================================================================================ pg. 28 - Catspaw: Attack is 112 (not 111) pg. 28 - Catspaw "CM" is incorrect. Not correct. With just these worn, as a blademaster there are no skills shown in game. pg. 59-62 - "Immune to Unconscious" = "Knock Out Negated" "God's Capriciousness" = "Divine Tool Saver" "Capricious Spirit" = "Tool Saver" "Unconscious Doubled" = "KO Doubled" "Famine" is called "Hunger" in game. Not sure though. "Hidden From Monster View" = "Stealth" "Auto Marking of Wyvern on Map" = "Auto Target" "Auto Map Display" = "Auto Map" or "Farsight"? "Farsight" = ??? Auto Map? "Speedy Damage Recovery" = "High-Speed Damage Recovery" "Immune to Heat" = "Anti-Heat" "Immune to Cold" = "Anti-Cold" "Provoke Monster" = "Provocation" "Unconscious Chance Halved" = "Knockout Probability Halved" "Agility Increased" = "Wide-Area Armor Seed" (thanks Sera!) " "Strength Increase" " = "Wide-Area Power Seed" (thanks Sera!) NOTE: "DarkArmor" says he called Capcom and asked about "Good Luck" skill and was told that Good Luck and Luck Booster only affect rewards and while they don't affect your chances of rare carves apparently they will double your chances of getting a Guild Ticket. Combine this with what "ilikemadness" said he was told when he called Capcom that "luck is luck" whether it's skills or petting the pig and you can infer that petting the pig will double your chances of getting a guild ticket and boosting your reward chance percentages as well. pg. 59-62 - Lists "Immune to Wind Pressure" AND "Anti-Wind Pressure" are the same thing. (thanks Jesse!) pg. 59-62 - Full Gypceros armor skills not listed. Skills are "Wide Area Antidote" and "Health +10". pg. 59-62 - "Luck Booster" skill not listed. (Btw, Luck Booster and Good Luck only affect rewards a phone call to Capcom reveals a player named "DarkArmor" called them about it) pg. 59-62 - Doesn't list the Steel Mail + Steel Gloves + Steel Belt combination (Combine + 10%). pg. 59-62 - Doesn't seem to list any Kut-Ku+ armor. (have I missed it?) pg. 59-62 - Doesn't List the armor combo: Plesioth Helm+, Kut-Ku Vest +, Kut-Ku Guards+, Kut-Ku Coat+, Ratholos Leggings which provide skills: Attack Up (Small) & Knockout Probability Halved. (did I miss it?) pg. 60 - The set, ninth from the bottom, Hi-Metal Cap+/Ioprey Vest/ Hi-Metal Guards+/Ioprey Coat/Cephalos Leggings is slightly wrong to receive the Lightning Resist +25 skill. Replace Cephalos Leggings with Gypceros Leggings to get the skill. (thanks Sera!) pg. 60 - The tenth set from the bottom, much like the listing above this one is wrong. Replace Cephalos Greaves with Gypceros Greaves to receive the Lightning Resist +25 skill. (thanks Sera!) pg. 60 - Khezu+ skills are wrong. Effect #1 should be "Wide Area Recovery" (although what it does read there is arguably correct in the abstract) pg. 60 - Khezu+ skills are wrong. Effect #3 should read "KO Duration Doubled". pg. 60 - Mosswine Mask + Moss Breastplate: The skill is actually called "Hunger x 1.5" pg. 61 - Velociprey Mask, Moss Breastplate, Bone Coat skills are shown as "Good Luck". In game it's called "Luck Booster". Also, "Immune to Unconscious" is actually shown as "Knock Out Negated". pg. 61 - Leather Helm...Leather Armor Skill List is printed twice. pg. 61 - "Capricious Spirit" for leather armor is actually called "Tool Saver" in game. pg. 60 - Guild Armor - "God's Capriciousness" should be "Divine Toolsaver" I think, I may be wrong. pg. 60 - Guild Armor - "Good Fortune" should be, I think, "Good Luck". I may be wrong. ================================================================================ 010 **** ARMOR: GENERAL **** ================================================================================ pg. 43 - Cephalos Cap & Helm pictures are, except for one, the female helm, are actually Gypceros helm and cap. pg. 43 - Gypceros cap and helm pictures are wrong. I think they're of Ceph or Plesioth armor. pg. 45 - Shinobi Mask (Moon) and (Sun): Apparently the pictures are reversed so what's shown for sun is actually moon and vice versa. (thanks TrapGunner!) pg. 45 - Cephalos Mail and Vest actually show Gypceros armor instead. pg. 46 - Gypceros Mail and Vest actually picture Cephalos armor instead. (It looks like most of the armor for Gypceros and Cephalos is mixed up with one another throughout.) pg. 56 - Borealis: The pictures are slightly misnamed. From left to right they should be: Borealis - Glyph - Red Borealis - Red Glyph pg. 56 & 58 - Blos Armor shows legs and waist armor, but like Lobster armor there are no Blos legs or waist armor. (thanks John5000!) pg. 57 & 60 - Guild Armor user seems wrong. On page 57, it shows male gunner armors separately whilst on page 60 it reads "blade/gun" for both sets while you CAN wear either with either a gun or a sword. pg. 58 - Lobster Armor: The pictures show full sets but in the game there are only three pieces. The missing pieces should be grayed out like the helm/cap for Kut Ku armor on page 57. (is what's shown for tasset and leggings rathian?) pg. 60 - Lobster Armor - Fifth and Sixth ones down show "Lobster G Skin" under the "Body" column while on pages 43-55 no such armor is listed, just normal and plus Lobster types. pg. 61 - Lists Leather Mail however Leather mail is not on pg. 47. ================================================================================ 011 **** ITEMS & ITEM DESCRIPTIONS **** ================================================================================ pg. 64 - Items intro text: Indeed, the secondary objective of every possible quest is to return to the town of village toting a full inventory of valuables, tools and commodities found in the field." I may be wrong but I'm fairly sure you can't find "tools" in the field. pg. 65 - Giving Items: A minor point, but it never mentions that in order to hand someone an item you need to also select their name from the list that pops up. pg. 65 - Giving Items: Does not mention that you cannot trade items with a rare level of 4 or 5, weapons or armor. pg. 66 - Medicines - Ancient Potion: Item Usage mentions "Strength" where it should read Stamina instead. pg. 66 - Powercharm not listed. pg. 66 - Psychoserum description states, "Marks location of Yian Kut-Ku for 10 seconds on map." This is false. It shows you any target animal(s) on the map. pg. 67 - Barrel Lid: It's listed under the "Traps and Throwing Items" chart but it is neither! It is best described as a "Mystery Item" and should probably be in the chart for them on page 72. pg. 67-68 Nearly every single " Usage" description for the various ammo types is incorrect. pg. 68 - Tools - Demon Flute - Item Usage uses the word "strength" where it should read Attack power level. pg. 68 - "Mega Fishing Fly" bait not listed that's sold on special market days. pg. 69 - Ores, Earth Crystal's "Item Usage" reads "Sharpness Restored"? pg. 70 - Snakebee Larva bait not listed here or on combo list. pg. 72 - Chrome Voucher: The description is incorrect. (Dengeki is a Japanese videogame magazine which did provide the "Dengeki Ticket" in the Japanese version of Monster Hunter in a special event quest) The actual description for the Chrome Voucher reads something like: "For those about to rock we salute you. GMR is rocking right along." (I'll fill in exact text later) pg. 73 - Delivery Items: "Wyvern - No explanation necessary." So far no one that I've heard of has found this in-game. It CAN be acquired via a cheat device. It may be a special event quest item or something that was removed from the game before the final version. Only time will tell. As of this writing, there seems to be no legitimate way to acquire one during a quest. pg. 75 - Herb + Honey does not make a Potion. (Although it did in the beta) pg. 75 - All bait combos seem to be missing. Here they are: No. 31 Tuna Bait = Worm + Vambug No. 32 Arrowana Bait = Cricket + Bughopper No. 33 Goldfish Bait = Firefly + Snakebee Larva ================================================================================ 012 **** MONSTER DESCRIPTIONS **** ================================================================================ pg. 78 - "Carve Items" The paragraph states, "In some cases an item is listed multiple times with various chances to obtain it, this means that a monster can be carved more than once and there is a chance to obtain the same item over again." Yet, several animals have carve charts with the same item listed twice where it also shows (correctly) that you can only carve them once. Such as: Mosswine, Bullfango, Kelbi, (Apceros is actually 2 carves I believe), Velociprey, Genprey, Ioprey, Vespoid, Hornetaur and Cephalos. All these show only one carve, yet list the same item more than once in the carve percentage chart. This seems like a contradiction. pg. 78 - Bullfango: It never mentions that Bullfangos come in two sizes: Regular and Xtra-Large. pg. 79 - Apceros says number of carvings is 1, it's actually 2. pg. 79 - Apceros carve chart is actually the carve chart for the Mossine! pg. 80 - Felyne paragraph states, "Although they possess extremely low Health points, Felynes are difficult to slay due to their high agility." Not to split hairs here but you can't "slay" as in kill a Felyne, just whack them until they go away. pg. 80 - Melynx paragraph states, "When an item is stolen, the hunter can snatch the item back by attacking the Melynx enough times to reduce their health to zero." Again, like with the Felyne, you can't kill them -which is what zero health would be- just make them go away via digging. pg. 82 - Ioprey: "Ioprey are the hardest raptor-like mosnters to kill, with the highest number of health points." But if you read Iodrome below that you'll see "Iodromes are the alpha creatures of the Ioprey pack." meaning that they are the leaders. From experience Iodrome have more health points than an Ioprey. The Ioprey statement in it's description is wrong and clearly a contradiction. Also, under Iodromes description we read: "Due to their incredibly high number of Health points..." again this is wrong at worst misleading at best. Iodromes have more health points than Ioprey. pg. 83 - Ratholos: Number of carves is 3 for body and 1 for tail. pg. 83 - Ratholos & Rathian tail carves lists a Plate as a 1% carve. When "DarkArmor" called Capcom he was told the percentage is closer to .25%. (sounds weird but can work out mathematically so who knows?) NOTE: "ilikemadness" says that according to Capcom plates are NOT listed as an offline item after he contacted them and asked. NOTE: "Haohmaru" and many other people confirm that you can indeed get plates in the offline game. So it's settled. pg. 83 - Rathian: Number of carves is 3 for body and 1 for tail. pg. 84 - Gypceros: "Unlike a Kut-Ku Gypceros do not try to limp away when badly injured." yet on page 156 we read in the Walkthrough: to "Catch A Gypceros" this, "After rises once again, attack it a few more times until it begins limping." Bottom line: Gypceros DOES limp albiet rarely. As I said elsewhere try to judge how injured he is by the number of feigned deaths and the color of his eyes. pg. 84 - Vespoid: The description does not mention that they come in two sizes. Regular and Very Large. You can see them by doing the five star quest "More Coal Please" in areas 2 and 3. pg. 85 - Plesioth: Number of carves = 4 (not 3) pg. 85 - Plesioth: Fails to mention that the only way a Plesioth can be lured with a frog, is if the monster eye is not on you. (thanks Skeletor619!) pg. 85 - Hornetaur: The description does not mention that they come in two sizes. Regular and Titanic. You can see them by doing the five star quest "More Coal Please" in areas 2 and 3. pg. 85 - Khezu: "When a hunter attempts to attack a Khezu at close range, the creature emits a cloud of lightning from every pore that electrocutes, paralyzes and flings a hunter away." This implies that the Khezu's cloud attack inflicts Paralysis on a hunter when it doesn't. Only the three balls of lightning do. pg. 85 - Khezu: "Because the monster has no eyes, Flash Bombs rarely work against it." I've never seen one work on a Khezu at all. Possibly false. pg. 85 - Plesioth: Fails to mention it's devastating hip-check attack at all. pg. 87 - Monoblos: reads, "Because of the enormous width of the Monoblos, the creature is too large to fall into Pitfall Traps." Not true. It cannot be held in Pitfal Traps because it, like Diablos, is a burrowing monster. Plesioth can be held in Pitfal Traps and it's much larger than Monoblos. (thanks SpacePirateKhan!) pg. 87 - Diablos: Number of Carvings is 4 but it's 3 for the body and 1 for the tail. "(2 per area)" is wrong. pg. 88 - Gravios: Number of Carvings is 4 for the body and it's 2 for the tail for a total of 6 carves, not 4 as printed. "(2 per area)" is wrong. pg. 88 - Gravios: "Because Gravios scales are so incredibly difficult to penetrate with any type of weapon, the tail is the only spot on the creature where Blademasters can possibly hope to cause damage." False. You can, like Basarios, do extreme damage to his belly/chest. pg. 88 - Basarios paragraphs says, "The tail section is the only place where Blademasters can hope to cause any damage..." False. You can do extreme damage to his belly/chest and some to his legs. pg. 88 - Basarios: "Number of Carvings: 4 (2 Per Area)" is wrong. You can carve his body 3 times and his tail only once. pg. 88 - Basarios: The carve chart shows only one Basarios Wing may be carved in the Latter Game Carve Items (Body) section, when you can in fact carve two from one kill from the body. pg. 89 - Kirin: "Number of Carvings: 3". So far in every Kirin event thus far, Kirin only provides 2 carves. pg. 89 - Kirin: "The only way to take on a Kirin is with the help of other players, by baiting the monster into Pitfall Traps." False. Kirin is not a wyvern therefore it does not fall into traps. (thanks Sera!) pg. 89 - Lao-Shan Lung description is wrong where it states, "Once the creature turns around and flees, the group must pursue it back to the starting point, inflicting enough damage to topple the monster." As best I can tell this is false. Once the time is up, he's killed or destroys the fort and the mission is over. There's no chasing him back to area 1. pg. 89 - Lao-Shan Lung: "Number of Carvings: 3-6" is wrong. There are 9 with three per area when dead. 12 if you count carving his back 3 times when he is alive. pg. 89 - Lao-Shan Lung: "Lao-Shan Lung can be carved at various places, such as the head, wings, tail and body." Lao has no wings. There are only three areas to carve -not counting the back when alive- the head, body and near the tail. pg. 89 - Lao-Shan Lung description is wrong where it states, "Blademasters are quite useless until the enormous dragon finally reaches the fort's front gates." Not true. Blademasters can damage his legs, head and belly while he is lumbering towards the final area. pg. 89 - Early and Late carvings for Fatalis are identical. Should they be? pg. 89 - Fatalis: Number Of Carvings reads "???" There are 9. (thanks Akubarix!) Head, Upper Body and Rear Body. (thanks Sera!) ================================================================================ 013 **** MAP ERRORS **** ================================================================================ pg. 92 - Town: A minor detail but there are two Marketplace entrances on the left side of the upper photo map. pg. 93 - Lower photo map: A minor detail but at the bottom right of the lower photo map it fails to mention that that is the way to the delivery guy you can talk to to find out about specials going on at the market. pg. 99 - Desert Zone area 11 locations are all wrong, and that's not where you find the Barrel Lid exactly. The lid is actually to the right of the number 3 a bit where there are TWO not one search areas in area 11. Essentially there's an entire search area missing in area 11, there are actually 5 areas to search. pg. 101 - The Umbrella is in area 9 of the swamp, however it's at location 3 not 4. pg. 101 - Area 11 lists in Location 3 as having infinite Quartz Ore. Not always true. I've had on several occasions "There is nothing else here" appear on Quartz quests there. Area 7 however does have infinite Quartz Ore on those missions. pg. 101 - Area 7 and Area 11 charts both list Nova crystals next to the word "Egg". There is no egg hunt in the swamp. However this isn't an error technically as on page 91 it reads, " "Egg" items only appear during quests requiring hunters to carry heavy, oversized eggs or crystals back to the campsite without dropping the object." ================================================================================ 014 **** QUEST STRATEGIES: OFFLINE **** ================================================================================ pg. 106 - "Basics: Combining Items" - in the right hand column the text box entitled "Bug Season" reads, "Bugnets are used to capture rare insects at locations where green glowing insects fly." Maybe it's just me but they look yellow to my eyes. pg. 114 - "Jungle Menace" - "Avoid fighting the monster in Area 1..." should probably read Area 2 instead. Also, "...the Yian Kut-Ku attempts to rest in the nest in Area 6" should probably say Area 5 instead. pg. 114 - "Liver of Legend" - "Avoid Heatstroke!" reads, "If the hunter is in Areas 2 or 7 when the Cool Drink's effects wear off, a warning message appears." I'm pretty sure you see the warning message in other areas but don't hold me to that. Not 100% sure. pg. 115 - "Liver of Legend" - Reads: "If a hunter is killed during this quest, all Piscine Livers in possession are lost!" This is nearly certainly false. pg. 116 - "Trouble in the Forest" - At the bottom of the chart there is a section entitled "Special Monster Rewards:" which lists a Stone and a Lightcrystal as rewards. I'm not sure but possibly this means that if you slay a Gypceros you get these as a reward. It's odd it mentions it like this however where in other quests it lists additional monster rewards as something like "Slay Ratholos Via Head" and the like. The stats for the rewards materials are identical to those shown on page 120 for the "Slay the Gendrome" quest only there they are labeled "Slay Gypceros:" pg. 119 - "Bring Me Eggs!": The strategy isn't exactly correct. (Big thanks to Sanjuro333 for the following!) A: The Apceros respawn and re-enter the cave slowly, only when the original ones disappear, so it's possible to go in and kill them all quickly, grab the eggs and run out. B: You do have to drop the egg to trigger the next set of monsters. C: The preys in Area 7 can be killed and do not come back, but those in Area 2 keep respawning. D: When you re-enter the cave, depending on whether respawned Apceros entered the cave, it may or may not be empty. If there are Apceros in here, just kill them all and they stop coming back. E: As for running back via the 'southern' wall, there is no such wall, instead it is probably the south-western wall. However, it seems that the north-eastern wall of area 2 might be a better choice as there are fewer prey over Êon this side, although it is a slightly longer way. pg. 122 - Ratholos mission chart reads that you'll get Reward for slaying him... on a Capture quest! pg. 125 - "Basrios: Unseen Peril" offline reads at the bottom of the chart, "Slay Bonus Monster:" What bonus monster? pg. 125 - "Basarios: Unseen Peril" - Reads, "When the monster collides into the stone wall, it leaves its weak tail section exposed momentarily. This is the only weak spot on the monster..." False. You can do extreme damage to his belly. pg. 126 - "Slay the Rathian!" - Walkthrough: reads, "Time now to slay the Rathian in the jungle setting." The chart says the Area is the Swamp Zone and the picture is of a Rathian in the Swamp Zone. The copy here for the strategy is wrong. You fight Rathian in the Swamp. Sanjuro333 has provided a brief walkthru since the Walkthrough in the book on page 126 for this quest is wrong. "...the idea for this one is to kill the pigs in 2, then go to 5 where the rathian starts. It's not possible to eliminate the iopreys and genpreys here and they are a constant nuisance. Lancers are handicapped here because of their constant interference, so a GS may be necessary to take on the rathian. The wyvern also sometimes flies to 3 and 2, and occasionally 4 and 9." (huge thanks to Sanjuro333 for this one!) pg. 128 - Reward Materials for "The Shadow in the Cave" lists Electro Sac twice but with two difference percentages one at 4% and another at 20%. This is probably not an error but I'm unsure. pg. 129 - "Terror of the Gravios" offline reads at the bottom of the chart, "Slay Bonus Monster:" What bonus monster? Is this correct? ================================================================================ 015 **** QUEST STRATEGIES: ONLINE **** ================================================================================ pg. 133 - Velociprey Hunt quest shows 5 stars, should it be only 1 star? pg. 139 - "Attack of the Rathian" Walkthrough: Reads, "When the creature becomes weak and begins limping, attack it's neck in an effort to cut its head off, which slightly improves the quest rewards." IMPOSSIBLE to do in the USA version of the game. May be possible in the Japanese version. (thanks ZeroEdge!) pg. 156 - Catch A Gypceros quest reads, "...attack it a few more times until it begins limping." Gypceros does indeed limp, however it does so extremely rarely. It should say watch the color of his eyes as they are a better indicator as limping is far too rare. pg. 158 - Reward Materials for "A Giant Dragon Invades" (and other similar quests later on) fails to list Commendations as a reward item or the percentage chance of receiving it. pg. 159 - "A Giant Dragon Invades" Walkthrough: reads, "Tote the Cannon S Shot through area 6, where 3 Ioprey constantly reappear." False: you CAN kill all of them after they respawn several times and clear that area. (thanks John5000!) pg. 163 - "Crystal Hunting" The Goal Conditions are indeed to "Deliver 3 Pcs. Quartz Ore" for this 4 Star quest, however at the bottom the text explaining the mission is about Sootstone Ore. (1 star Crystal Hunting is for Sootstone) pg. 178 - Ioprey Hunting - the rewards list "Ioprey Fang" three times with different percentages. I can't decide if this is an error or it's percentage by slot. pg. 171 - The 5 star "Quarts Ore Request" shows what you can get if you slay the Gypceros. There is no Gyp on this quest! It's Basarios and he's in Area 7. pg. 172 - "Re-Supply The Dragonator" 5 Star, does not list Dragonite Ore as a reward item although you can receive it as a reward. (thanks Wyverine!) pg. 174 - "More Coal Please" 5 Star, does not list Dragonite Ore as a reward item although you can receive it as a reward. (thanks Wyverine!) pg. 184 - "Wyverns of Land and Sky": Requestor text reads, "A pair of Wyverns have been seen in the Jungle Zone." Yet the info chart reads it takes place in the Swamp Zone. (thanks Joshua9500!) pg. 187 - "The Legendary Black Dragon": Walkthrough: Reads, "When Fatalis is in the north courtyard, everyone should move in front of the massive spear cannon situated at the top of the area." This is actually in the south courtyard not the north. (thanks John!) pg. 188 - A Giant Dragon Invades: The copy reads, "As the game is replayed and weapons are improved, attempt to hack off pieces of Lao-Shan such as the nose horn, the head, the tail or the wings. Severing any of these body parts rewards bonus materials when the quest is complete." So far, I've not seen this happen nor heard about it. You CAN cut off his horn and sever the plate on his back, however Lao-Shan has no wings and I've never seen his tail cut off yet. pg. 188 - "A Giant Dragon Invades": Walkthrough: Reads, "The fort will not hold out as long and stopping points such as the barrier in Area 3 will not hold out as long." Wrong. It always takes only two hits to break. (thanks Sera!) pg. 188 - "A Giant Dragon Invades" Reward Materials: The chart has two sections for Lao-Shan's Left and Right wing which list what you'll get as a reward if you "destroy" them. Lao-Shan has NO wings so I have no idea where this came from. ================================================================================ 016 **** QUEST UNLOCK REQUIREMENTS **** ================================================================================ pg. 127-128 - The requirements for the offline urgent "The Runaway Diablos" states you need to create and equip one piece of Monoblos armor. Not true. You just need to create it NOT equip it. pg. 128 - The requirements for the offline urgent "The Shadow in the Cave" states you need to create and equip one piece of Vespoid armor. Not true. You just need to create it NOT equip it. pg. 129 - The requirements for the offline urgent "Terror of the Gravios" states you need to complete the offline urgent "Handle with Care". Not true. You just need to create one piece of Cephalos armor. It does NOT need to be equipped. Also all other quests do not need to be cleared. pg. 129 - "Handle with Care" urgent is unlocked when "Terror of the Gravios" is cleared. ================================================================================ 017 **** MISCELLANEOUS PROBLEMS **** ================================================================================ pg 193 - there is no blank page 193 for "Notes". - There isn't much in the way of actually using various weapons such as controls, strategies or tactics. - There are no maps with suggested paths -via red lines- to take for egg, ore or stone quests (or any other quests for that matter). - There is no real description of "Dragon" damage or Element. ================================================================================ 018 **** GENERAL ERRORS **** ================================================================================ - On MANY of the egg/stone/ore quests the guide is incorrect on which areas re-spawn monsters. Often, one area will continue to spawn where the guide says it won't and/or vice-versa. - The word "Strength" is used for different things, from Stamina to Attack power. - In many, if not most of the Rathian quest strategies it fails to mention her devastating back-flip which also inflicts poison. - In a few places Dragonite is spelled as "Dragonlite". (thanks John5000!) ================================================================================ **** NOTES **** ================================================================================ Why did I make this guide? It started out as scraps of paper I kept in the "Official" guide after I noticed a few mistakes and differences. Then, as I progressed in the game I noted more errors and then some printing and layout errors. Then, even more factual errors after that. Eventually people started telling me errors while online with MH and I added those in. After time it grew to such a size that I typed it all up and tossed it on my server to keep it organized and for my friends to have access to so they could print it out. Fast forward a few days and people begin to email me some things they've noticed. After that it became routine to find or be told mistakes in the book; so one day I realized how ripped off I felt for having purchased the book: that day I decided to document any and all errors I find to try and offset the money I feel I wasted on this guide. Consider this entire document my review of the guide. 01) Need to really sit down with all the skills and figure out what's what and what's called what in the game. 02) It would be nice to add armor combos NOT listed between pages 59-62. ================================================================================ **** REPORT SUSPECTED MONSTER HUNTER CHEATERS TO megamail@capcom.com **** ================================================================================ This document is copyright 2004/2005, W.
