Introduction puddentater: This is my first FAQ and I wanted to write a FAQ on Monopoly seeing that there are no FAQ for Monopoly for the Xbox 360, Wii, and Playstation Consoles. I wanted a bit of help of writing the FAQ so I got help from JagDogger2525. I knew Steve for a few years and I knew he had a great style for his FAQs. We got together and I just threw the idea of making a FAQ for the recent Monopoly release. Both of us agreed and here we are. JagDogger2525: This is my third FAQ and I wanted to help puddentater out with his first FAQ seeing that he never wrote a FAQ before. I asked BSulpher for his Rules and Board Set-Up from his Monopoly guide for the SNES as well as Erdrick001 for About Monopoly from his Monopoly guide for the GameBoy and both gave us permission to use them. 1. About Monopoly MONOPOLY is a real estate trading game. You move around the game board, buying un-owned property and charging rent to those who happen to land on it afterward. You can trade your property with other players as well. You can improve your property by buying houses and hotels so you can charge higher rent. There are spaces on the board labeled "Chance" and "Community Chest". When you land on one of these you draw a card from the respective pile and follow the instructions on the card, either to pay money, collect money or advance to another location on the board. There is also the possibility of a player being sent "to jail", since owning a monopoly is actually illegal in real life. The object of the game is to earn money. More specifically, earn the most money of all players. Usually this means being the last one standing when all other players go bankrupt, but in a timed game, the wealthiest player (including not only cash but assets such as property and houses as well) when time runs out will be declared the winner. Compared to the board game, some of the features of the game (ex. the Banker & Auctioneer) are automated by the computer to prevent clerical errors. 3. Rules The following rules are default rules for 'Monopoly' Edition. The order is by a die roll (largest goes first), and as you roll, according to the space which his/her token reaches, a player may be entitled to buy real estate or other properties, or be obliged to pay rent, pay taxes, draw a Chance or Community Chest card, "Go to Jail", etc. Two or more players can occupy the same space at the same time. If a player throws doubles he/she moves his/her token as usual the sum of the two dice and is subject to any privileges or penalties pertaining to the space on which he/she lands. Retaining the dice, he/she throws again and moves his/her token as before. If a player throws doubles three times in succession, he/she moves his/her token immediately to the space marked "In Jail". Each time a player's token lands on or passes over "GO", whether by throw of the dice or by drawing a card, the Banker pays him $200 salary. However, $200 is paid only once each time around the board. If a player, passing "GO" on the throw of the dice, lands 2 spaces beyond it on "Community Chest", or 7 spaces beyond it on "Chance", and draws the card "Advance to GO", he/she collects $200 for passing "GO" the first time and another $200 for reaching it the second time by instructions on the card. Whenever a player lands on an unowned property he/she may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price. He/She receives the Title Deed card showing ownership. If he/she does not wish to buy the property it is sold at auction by the Banker to the highest bidder. The buyer pays to the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. Any player, including the one who declined the option of buying it at the printed price, may bid. Bidding may start at any price. When a player lands on property owned by another player the owner collects rent from him/her in accordance with the list printed on the Title Deed card applying to it. If the property is mortgaged, no rent can be collected. When a property is mortgaged, its Title Deed card will have a red slash across it with the owners flag still in place to show that that player may still unmortgage it. It is an advantage to hold all the Title Deeds in a color-group (i.e. Boardwalk and Park Place, - or Connecticut, Vermont and Oriental Avenues) because the owner may then charge double rent for unimproved properties in that color-group. This rule applies to unmortgaged properties even if another property in that color-group is mortgaged. It is even more of an advantage to have houses or hotels on properties because rents are much higher than for unimproved properties. When a player lands on either Community Chest or Chance, he/she takes the top card from the deck indicated, follows the instructions and returns the card to the bottom of the deck. The "Get Out of Jail Free" card is held until used and then returned to the bottom of the deck. If the player who draws it does not wish to use it he/she may sell it, at any time, to another player at a price agreeable to both. When a player lands on "Income Tax" he/she has to pay the tax at $200 to the Bank. A player lands in Jail when... a) his/her token lands on the space marked "Go to Jail"; b) he/she draws a card marked "Go to Jail"; c) he/she throws doubles three times in succession. When a player is sent to Jail, he/she cannot collect $200 salary in that move since, regardless of where his/her token is on the board, he/she must move it directly into Jail. A player's turn ends when he/she is sent to Jail. If a player is not "sent to Jail" but in the ordinary course of play lands on that space, he/she is "Just Visiting", incurs no penalty, and moves ahead in the usual manner on his/her next turn. A player gets out of Jail by... a) throwing doubles on any of his/her next three turns. If he/she succeeds in doing this he/she immediately moves forward the number of spaces shown by his/her doubles throw. Even though he/she has thrown doubles he/she does not take another turn; b) using the "Get Out of Jail Free" card if he/she has it; c) purchasing the "Get Out of Jail Free" card from another player and playing it; d) paying a fine of $50 before he/she rolls the dice on either of his/her next two turns. If the player does not throw doubles by his/her third turn he/she must pay the $50 fine. He/She then gets out of Jail and immediately moves forward the number of spaces shown by his/her throw. Even though he/she is in Jail, a player may buy or sell property, buy or sell houses and hotels and collect rents. A player landing on this space does not receive any money, property or reward of any kind. This is just a "free" resting place. When a player owns all the properties in a color-group he/she may buy houses from the Bank and erect them on those properties. If he/she buys one house, he/she may put it on any one of those properties. The next house he/she buys must be erected on one of the unimproved properties of this or any other complete color-group he/she may own. The price he/she must pay the Bank for each house is shown on his/her Title Deed Card for the property on which he/she erects the house. The owner can still collect double rent from an opponent who lands on the unimproved properties of his/her complete color-group. Following the above rules, a player may buy and erect at any time as many houses as his/her judgment and financial standing will allow. But he/she must build evenly (i.e. he/she cannot erect more than one house on any one property of any color-group until he/she has built one house on every property of that group. He/She may then begin on the second row of houses, and so on, up to a limit of four houses to a property. For example, he/she cannot build three houses on one property if he/she has only one house on another property of that group. As a player builds evenly, he/she must also break down evenly if he/she sells houses back to the Bank. When a player has four houses on each property of a complete color-group, he/she may buy a hotel from the Bank and erect it on any property of that color-group. He/She returns the four houses from that property to the Bank and pays the price for the hotel as shown on the Title Deed card. Only one hotel may be erected on any one property. When the Bank has no houses to sell, players wishing to build must wait for some player to turn back or to sell his/her houses to the Bank before building. If there are a limited number of houses and hotels available, and two or more players wish to buy more than the Bank has, the houses or hotels must be sold at auction to the highest bidder. Unimproved properties, railroads and utilities (but not buildings) may be sold to any player as a private transaction for any amount that the owner can get. However, no property can be sold to another player if buildings are standing on any properties of that color-group. Any buildings so located must be sold back to the Bank before the owner can sell any property of that color-group. Houses and hotels may be sold back to the Bank at any time for one-half the price paid for them. All houses on one color-group must be sold one by one, evenly, in reverse of the manner in which they were erected. All hotels on one color-group may be sold at once. Or they may be sold one house at a time (one hotel equals five houses), evenly, in reverse of the manner in which they were erected. Unimproved properties can be mortgaged through the Bank at any time. Before an improved property can be mortgaged all the buildings on all the properties of its color-group must be sold back to the Bank at half price. The mortgage value is printed on each Title Deed card. No rent can be collected on mortgaged properties or utilities, but rent can be collected on unmortgaged properties in the same group. In order to lift the mortgage, the owner must pay the Bank the amount of the mortgage plus 10% interest. When all the properties of a color-group are no longer mortgaged the owner may begin to buy back houses at full price. The player who mortgages property retains possession of it and no other player may secure it by lifting the mortgage from the Bank. However, the owner may sell this mortgaged property to another player at any agreed price. The new owner may lift the mortgage at once, if he wishes, by paying off the mortgage plus 10% interest to the Bank. If he/she does not lift the mortgage at once he/she must pay the Bank 10% interest when he/she buys the property and if he/she lifts the mortgage later he/she must pay an additional 10% interest as well as the amount of the mortgage to the Bank. A player is bankrupt when he/she owes more than he/she can pay either to another player or to the Bank. If his/her debt is to another player, he/she must turn over to that player all that he/she has of value and retire from the game. In making this settlement, if he/she owns houses or hotels, he/she must return these to the Bank in exchange for money to the extent of one-half the amount paid for them and this cash is given to the creditor. If he/she has mortgaged property he/she also turns this property over to his/her creditor but the new owner must at once pay the Bank the amount of interest on the loan, which is 10% of the value of the property. After the new owner does this, he/she may, at his/her option, pay the principal or hold the property until some later turn at which time he/she may lift the mortgage. If he/she holds property in this way until a later turn, he/she must pay the interest again when he/she lifts the mortgage. 4.
