Introduction ************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** This FAQ will cover every gun featured in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the Sony Playstation 2. In this FAQ you'll find an individual section for each gun, in which I've included all the info I could think of for each. This is my first FAQ. I decided to make this because... I like guns! ****************************************************************************** 2. Version History *********************************************************** ****************************************************************************** 1.0 - December 22, 2004 1.1 - December 29, 2004 - Added three more ammo capacities. 1.2 - December 30, 2004 - Added four more ammo capacities. - Added alternate M63 location. 1.3 - January 3, 2005 - Added one more ammo capacity. 1.4 - January 6, 2005 - Added alternate SVD location. 1.5 - January 28, 2005 - Added alternate AK-47 location. 1.6 - January 31, 2005 - Fixed an error concerning the magazine capacity of the Scorpion, and added "in-game description error" to it's section. 1.7 - March 17, 2005 - Added reload speeds. - Added a new section for the Cigar Gas-Spray. - Added a new section for the RPG-7. 1.8 - March 20, 2005 - Added one more ammo capacity. 1.9 - August 04, 2005 - Added one more ammo capacity. 2.0 - December 06, 2005 - Made some minor changes. - Added an alternate AK-47 location. ****************************************************************************** 3. Assault Rifles = Pistols = Machine Guns? ********************************** ****************************************************************************** I intended to discuss the power of each gun in its respective section. That was before I discovered through experimentation that almost every non- tranquilizing gun is equal in strength. To be more specific, the following guns are equal in terms of power: AK-47 M1911A1 M63 Patriot Scorpion Single Action Army XM16E1 How do I know this? On the normal difficulty, I killed a guard with all the guns listed above by: 1. Only shooting one arm, each gun killed a guard after exactly six shots. 2. Only shooting one leg, each gun killed a guard once again after exactly six shots. 3. Only shooting the torso, each gun killed a guard after exactly three shots. So Assault Rifles = Pistols = Machine guns... in the MGS universe anyway. The SVD (Sniper Rifle) and the M37 (Shotgun) are not equal to the guns listed above or each other in power, they will be discussed in their sections. ****************************************************************************** 4. AK-47 ********************************************************************* ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A soviet made assault rifle, reliable durable and highly precise. Uses 7.62 x 39 ammunition. Magazine size is 30 rounds. Equip in first person view and press the L1 button to aim from the shoulder; press the Triangle button to switch between semi-auto and full-auto fire." Location: Rassvet, there is only one set of stairs in the area, the AK-47 is on the platform at the top. Alternate Location: If missed at the first location, it can be found later at Bolshaya Past Base, inside the small weapons building at the top right of the area. Alternate location: If you missed it at the first location, you can find it later in Chyornaya Peschera Cave Branch, in the area where you first drop down. Weight: 3.5kg Pretty heavy, to conserve stamina this should be left in Snake's backpack when not being used. Reload speed: Approximately 2 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 301 rounds Normal: 151 rounds Hard and Extreme: 91 rounds Shoulder aiming: This will line the gun's site directly in front of you, making aiming much easier. Also this will slightly magnify your view. Full-auto fire: The rifle will fire continuously while you hold down the Square button. Unfortunately the recoil for this gun causes it to shake a lot making it inaccurate. Since the magazine only holds 30 rounds, you can only fire for three uninterrupted seconds. This guns ammo capacity is also very small, you can only hold enough ammo for a few magazines. All in all, I don't think this gun is very useful in full-auto fire mode. Semi-auto fire: In this mode the rifle will fire one shot with each press of the Square button. I find the gun most useful used in this mode. Since shoulder mounting slightly magnifies your view, it's fairly easy to go for head shots from a distance. The gun will still have a large recoil, you simply have to adjust your aim after each shot. ****************************************************************************** 5. Cigar Gas-Spray (CQC) ***************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A sleeping gas pistol shaped like a cigarette. The gas it sprays puts enemies to sleep." Location: Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West, in the small room near the stairs you enter from. Weight: 0.3kg The lightest in the game. Keeping this weapon on Snake at all times will barely affect his stamina. Reload speed: N/A *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 50 sprays Normal: 25 sprays Hard and Extreme: ? sprays Close Quarters Combat: While this weapon is equipped and you're not in disguise, you can still grab enemies and knock them out, slit their throat, interrogate them, all the stuff you can normally do when a weapon isn't equipped. Firing: This blow gun will spray sleeping gas once with each press of the square button. It's disguised as a normal cigarette and will be visible in Snake's mouth as such when it's equipped. It's disguised as such because it is meant for Snake to use while he's disguised as a scientist, officer, etc. The spray does not travel far, so you'll have to be right next to an enemy for it to hit him. When an enemy is hit with the spray, he will fall asleep instantly. Also since this is a blow gun that simply releases a spray, it is completely silent. ****************************************************************************** 6. EZ Gun (CQC) ************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A suppressed tranquilizer gun developed especially for FOX. The suppression function is built into the gun itself. Also equipped with an internal laser sight. When equipped, causes stamina to recover faster and keeps the camo index high. Also eliminates footstep noise." Location: In Snake's backpack during a very easy game. Can be unlocked during any other difficulty by completing the game after capturing at least one of every food. Weight: 0.5kg One of the lightest guns in the game. Keeping this weapon on Snake at all times will barely affect his stamina. Reload speed: N/A Ammo capacity: Infinite rounds on all difficulties Close Quarters Combat: While this weapon is equipped you can still grab enemies and knock them out, slit their throat, interrogate them, all the stuff you can normally do when a weapon isn't equipped. Also while holding an enemy, lightly press and hold the Square button to use him as a human shield while firing at other enemies; press and hold L1 to aim in first person and hard press Square to fire. Firing: This gun will fire one round each time you press the Square button. Like every gun that fires tranquilizer rounds, this gun must be cocked after every shot. Aiming in first person view is a breeze thanks to the laser sight, you can also greatly magnify your view by pressing and holding the L1 button. The gun has infinite ammo, and while equipped it keeps your camo index at 80%. ****************************************************************************** 7. M1911A1 (CQC) ************************************************************* ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A .45 gauge automatic pistol that boasts high reliability and massive stopping power. Magazine size is 7 rounds. Open the window and press the Circle button to attach/detach a suppressor." Location: Rassvet, EVA will give Snake this weapon when you meet her there. Weight: 1.0kg One of the lightest guns in the game. Keeping this weapon on Snake at all times will barely affect his stamina. Reload speed: Approximately 1 second *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 71 rounds Normal: 36 rounds Hard and Extreme: 22 rounds Close Quarters Combat: While this weapon is equipped you can still grab enemies and knock them out, slit their throat, interrogate them, all the stuff you can normally do when a weapon isn't equipped. Also while holding an enemy, lightly press and hold the Square button to use him as a human shield while firing at other enemies; press and hold L1 to aim in first person and hard press Square to fire. Firing: This gun will fire one round each time you press the Square button. Aiming in first person lines the gun's site up directly with your view, this makes aiming very easy. This gun is also perfect for killing enemies stealth-fully thanks to it's suppressor. This is my weapon of choice, providing I'm not trying for a no kill game. ****************************************************************************** 8. M63 *********************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "An American-made system weapon, belt-fed light machine gun version. Uses 5.56mm x 45 ammunition. Magazine size is 100 rounds." Location: Svyatogornyj East, inside the top-left room of the cabin. You have to climb over the crates to reach it. Alternate location: If you missed it at the above location, you can find it later in Groznyj Grad North West, inside the small weapons building. Weight: 4.5kg The second heaviest gun in the game, to conserve stamina leave this in the backpack when not being used. Reload speed: Approximately 5 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 1001 rounds Normal: 501 rounds Hard and Extreme: 301 rounds Full-auto fire: This rifle's only mode of fire. It will fire continuously while you hold down the Square button. The recoil for this gun causes it to shake a lot making it inaccurate. Like every fully-auto weapon, you can only carry enough ammo for a few magazines. That's not a bad thing for this weapon, being as each magazine carries 100 rounds. You can fire uninterrupted with this weapon for eleven seconds, with that much uninterrupted firing time, who cares about recoil? ****************************************************************************** 9. M37 *********************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "An American-made shotgun. The stock and barrel have been sawed off to reduce the weight. Carries four 12-gauge shells." Virtuous Mission location: Rassvet, south of the only stairs in the area, next to the crates. Operation Snake Eater location: Peschera Cave, follow the right path, it's in the area after the first tunnel. Weight: 2.9kg Fairly heavy, to conserve stamina this should be left in Snake's backpack when not being used. Reload speed: Approximately 4 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 41 rounds Normal: 21 rounds Hard and Extreme: 13 rounds Close range shots: This gun is ideal for close range shots. It will fire one round with each press of the square button and it must be cocked after each shot. This gun may not be accurate but it doesn't need to be; shooting any guard anywhere on their body will kill them in one shot and send them flying. It can also kill groups of enemies with one shot, providing they're close together. Distance shots: The guns weak point, using it at great distances should be avoided. The gun will do very little damage; it will take at least three shots to kill an enemy, that is if you can hit him. ****************************************************************************** 10. MK22 (CQC) *************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A modified special version of the Mk22. A suppressor equipped tranquilizer gun being developed by the Navy. Because it uses a slide lock mechanism for added suppression capability, it can only be fired once before reloading. Open the window and press the Circle button to attach/detach a suppressor." Location: Rassvet, EVA will give Snake this weapon when you meet her there. Weight: 0.8kg One of the lightest guns in the game. Keeping this weapon on Snake at all times will barely affect his stamina. Reload speed: Approximately 1 second *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 81 rounds Normal: 41 rounds Hard and Extreme: 25 rounds Close Quarters Combat: While this weapon is equipped you can still grab enemies and knock them out, slit their throat, interrogate them, all the stuff you can normally do when a weapon isn't equipped. Aiming in first person lines the gun's site up directly with your view, this makes aiming very easy. A guard will not be alerted after he's hit with a shot from this gun, so always use the suppressor as to avoid alerting them from the sound of your gun fire. A head shot will instantly put enemies to sleep, a shot in the leg or arm will take about 12 seconds, and a shot in the torso will take about 8 seconds. ****************************************************************************** 11. Mosin Nagant ************************************************************* ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "The Mosin Nagant. A tranquilizer Sniper Rifle, and The End's weapon of choice. Adapted by The End from the M1891/30. a bolt action Sniper Rifle used by the Soviet Military during World War II. Uses 7.62 x 54R tranquilizer rounds." Info missing from in-game description: "Press L1 button to use the scope. Press the Triangle button to change the magnification ratio in the scope." Location: Sokrovenno, The End will drop this if you defeat him by draining his stamina. Weight: 4.4kg One of the heaviest guns in the game, to conserve stamina this should be left in Snake's backpack when not being used. Reload speed: Approximately 3 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 51 rounds Normal: 26 rounds Hard and Extreme: 16 rounds Firing: This Sniper Rifle will fire one shot with each press of the square button. Like every gun that fires tranquilizer rounds, this gun must be cocked after every shot. When equipped you are automatically brought into first person view. The scope only has 2 magnification ratios, it may seem limiting but it gets the job done. Search for your target from the further ratio, then switch to the closer ratio to aim more precisely. There is almost no involuntary movement done by Snake even when standing, this makes head shots a breeze. One shot to the head will put guards to sleep instantly. ****************************************************************************** 12. Patriot ****************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "An assault pistol developed for The Boss. Uses 5,56mm x 45 ammunition. The feeder mechanism inside the drum magazine forms a "OO" shape." Info missing from in-game description: "Equip in first person view and press the L1 button to aim precisely." Location: Rokovoj Bereg, The Boss gives this to Snake after defeating her. You start with this weapon during your next game on the same difficulty. Weight: 1.5kg Pretty light, keeping this weapon on Snake at all times won't affect his stamina much. Reload speed: N/A Ammo capacity: Infinite rounds on all difficulties Full-auto fire: The guns only mode of fire, it will fire continuously while you hold down the Square button. Like every fully-automatic gun in the game, this gun's recoil causes it to shake a lot making it inaccurate. However unlike the others, you can drastically lessen the recoil by simply kneeling while you fire. Since this weapon has unlimited ammo, you will never have to change magazines, and therefore you can fire uninterrupted for an infinite amount of time. ****************************************************************************** 13. Scorpion ***************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A Czechoslovakian-made submachine gun. Equipped with a laser pointer. Uses 32ACP ammunition. Magazine size is 20 rounds. Equipped with a laser pointer. Open the window and press the Triangle button to switch between semi-auto and full-auto fire." In-game description error: Despite what the in-game description says, the magazines for this gun hold 30 rounds. Location: Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab East Wing, in the room below the bathroom. You need to be disguised a Major Raikov to enter the room. Weight: 1.3kg Pretty light, keeping this weapon on Snake at all times won't affect his stamina much. Reload speed: Approximately 2 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 201 rounds Normal: 101 rounds Hard and Extreme: 51 rounds Full-auto fire: The submachine gun will fire continuously while you hold down the Square button. Semi-auto fire: In this mode the submachine gun will fire one shot with each press of the Square button. I find the gun most useful used in this mode. You can't aim precisely or shoulder mount this weapon, but the laser pointer more than makes up for it. The gun still has a large recoil, you simply have to adjust your aim after each shot. ****************************************************************************** 14. Single Action Army ******************************************************* ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A .45 caliber, six shot revolver. Equip in first person view and press the L1 button to aim precisely. Can also use the right analog stick to do tricks." Location: Groznyj Grad Torture Room, The Boss will give this gun to Snake after the torture. Unlock at next Game Start: Choose the gun on the right during your final duel with Ocelot to unlock the SAA at the beginning of your next game, on the same difficulty. Weight: 1.0kg One of the lightest guns in the game. Keeping this weapon on Snake at all times will barely affect his stamina. Reload speed: Approximately 4 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 60 rounds Normal: 30 rounds Hard and Extreme: 18 rounds Precise aiming: This will line the gun's site directly in front of you, making aiming much easier. Firing: This gun will fire one shot each time the Square button is pressed. When firing in first person, the between shot time is a drawback for this weapon, especially since we have an automatic pistol (M1911A1). For whatever reason, Snake is unable to walk/run while firing this gun. The only plus to using this weapon is the bullets ricocheting. If you're like me and could care less about that, you'll stick to using the M1911A1, after all they're equal in power. ****************************************************************************** 15. SVD ********************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A Soviet-made automatic sniper rifle known for it's high precision. Uses 7.62mm x 54 rimmed cartridges. Magazine size is 10 rounds. Press L1 button to use the scope. Press the Triangle button to change the magnification ratio in the scope." Virtuous Mission location: Dremuchij North, when you come across a path to your right, follow it to it's end to find this gun on the ground. Operation Snake Eater location: Ponizovje West, in the small weapons building at the top of the screen. Alternate location: If you missed it at the above location, you can find it later at Sokrovenno South, in the small weapons building. Weight: 4.6kg The heaviest gun in the game, to conserve stamina this should be left in Snake's backpack when not being used. Reload speed: Approximately 3 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 101 rounds Normal: 51 rounds Hard and Extreme: 31 rounds Firing: This Sniper Rifle will fire one shot with each press of the square button. To top it off hitting anywhere on the torso is a one shot kill, the limbs will take 2 shots. This is the most powerful gun in the game. ****************************************************************************** 16. XM16E1 ******************************************************************* ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "A state of the art assault rifle currently being field- tested by the U.S. Army. Uses small caliber, high muzzle velocity 5.56 x 45 ammunition. Magazine size is 20 rounds. Open the window and press the Circle button to attach/detach a suppressor. Press the Triangle button to switch between semi-auto, full-auto, and 3-shot burst fire." Missing from in-game description: "Equip in first person view and press the L1 button to aim from the shoulder." Virtuous Mission location: Dolinovadno, cross the bridge, then follow the narrow path to your left which curves around and leads under the bridge. Operation Snake Eater location: Graniny Gorki Lab Exterior Inside Walls, the small weapons building North of where you enter from. Weight: 2.9kg Fairly heavy, to conserve stamina this should be left in Snake's backpack when not being used. Reload speed: Approximately 1 second *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 201 rounds Normal: 151 rounds Hard and Extreme: 61 rounds Shoulder aiming: This will line the gun's site directly in front of you, making aiming much easier. This guns ammo capacity is also very small, you can only hold enough ammo for a few magazines. All in all, I don't think this gun is very useful in full-auto fire mode. Semi-auto fire: Semi-auto fire: In this mode the rifle will fire one shot with each press of the Square button. I find the gun most useful used in this mode. Since shoulder mounting slightly magnifies your view, it's fairly easy to go for head shots, and you won't have worry about your enemies distance providing you attach the suppressor. The gun will still have a large recoil, you simply have to adjust your aim after each shot. 3-shot burst fire: In this mode the rifle will fire three shots with each press of the Square button. The first bullet will naturally go wherever you were aiming, the other 2 well, your guess is as good as mine thanks to the recoil. ****************************************************************************** 17. RPG-7 ******************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** In-game description: "The RPG-7. A state-of-the-art Soviet portable anti-tank rocket launcher. The rocket-propelled grenade warheads are loaded with HEAT, a plastic explosive. Press L1 to use the scope." Location: Krasnogorje Mountainside, inside the small weapons building near the area's exit leading to the mountaintop. Weight: 6.3kg The heaviest weapon in the game, to conserve stamina this should be left in Snake's backpack when not being used. Reload speed: Approximately 5 seconds *************** Ammo capacities *************** Very Easy and Easy: 70 rounds Normal: 20 rounds Hard and Extreme: ? rounds Firing: This weapon will fire one rocket-propelled grenade with each press of the square button. When equipped you are automatically brought into first person view. This weapon can only hold one round at a time, so you'll have to reload after each shot. It takes five seconds so you'll always want to quick reload by tapping the R2 button twice. The scope will only slightly magnify your view, but it still makes aiming much easier, and should always be used when firing this weapon. ****************************************************************************** 18.
