DEAD MAN WALKING GUIDE ************************ Written by Daniel Conroy This is a guide taken from the PS2 Europe(PAL) version of Max Payne 2. However I would assume that any differences are minimal. Contents ++++++++ 1) Introduction 2) General Gameplay Tips 3) Individual Area Guides 1) Introduction ================ Dead Man Walking is an extra side game that you can play once you have completed the main story for the first time. It can be accessed by selecting 'New Game' from the main menu and then 'Dead Man Walking'. When you do this you will be presented with five different areas that you can play Dead Man Walking in. The general idea of Dead Man Walking is that you are placed in an area taken from the main story game with a limited amount of ammo and painkillers, but unlimited bad guys and the aim is to stay alive as long as possible. Creators -------- In each area there are a number of 'creators' or 'spawners'. These are blue circles on the floor that fire at different rates to put an increasing number of bad guys in to the area. To start with there will be one bad guy in the area, once he has moved off his creator, that creator will fire and create a second bad guy, meaning that there will be two bad guys in the area. After a set period of time a second creator will fire, as well as the first. This situation will continue with more and more creators firing at the same time. This will mean that there will be increasing numbers of bad guys in the area making staying alive less and less likely. When a creator is about to fire it emits a wailing whistle before the bad guy is put out. 2) General Gameplay Tips ======================== i) When you first play the areas don't be annoyed if you only last about 20 seconds as it is difficult to know where the bad guys are going to come from and where good hiding places are. Over time you will become wise to them, and if you read this guide you should have a head start! ii) Remember to use the painkillers. Another skill to learn is when to use them. Like in the game the healing effect of the painkillers stops if you are hit so only use them if you are in a safe area away from enemy fire. iii) Be aware of ammo boxes. These are the long grey rectangular boxes that explode like fireworks if shot. If you are any where near one of these things when it blows you will die immediately. Unfortunately they have a habit of flying around as well meaning that as you are getting out of the way if follows you and still blows up in your face. I have tried to highlight some of the boxes in each area. iv) Use objects to hide behind, and shoot-dodge out and back behind them when the bad guys are close. v) If you are near a creator and it emits the wailing whistle then either get out of the way, or get ready to rumble and lock your sights on the creator and blast the bad guy before he has time to blink! vi) The moment the level starts switch to the dual 9mm pistol option. Use the other weapons when you know where the bad guys are. 3) Area Guides =============== In each area I will describe what ammo you start with, the location of the creators, the order in which they fire, the location of any painkillers, any extra ammo lying around, and the location of the deadly ammo boxes. I will also give tips on places to hide or go that I have found works best for me. For the purpose of the guide I will describe locations or directions in the form of a compass, i.e. North(N), East(E), South(S), West(W) and the other combinations e.g. NE. For each one I will also tell you where North is as a reference point. At the end I will give a rough list of times that in my experience of playing the game are of a high standard. ** Please do not e-mail me to tell me that you have beaten my times. I constantly beat them myself, I am not bragging or trying to set competition records, they are meant to be a rough estimate! ** i) MANOR YARD -------------- * Location: This area is the front of Woden's mansion. * Starting Ammo: 9mm pistol - 100 bullets Shotgun - 100 cartridges Molotovs - 3 Grenades - 3 * Reference Point: North is facing the direction that you start in with the Manor to your right. * Creators: The two that fire first are in the NW corner The next to fire is in the most N point under the arch The next to fire is one of the seven located in the NE The other two are W and at a point nearly N. * Painkillers: 3 in a box that is W 3 in a box that is NW 3 in a box N region, in front of ammo pile * Extra Ammo: There is an ammo pile in a N direction just to the right of the van This contains 3 Kalasnikov Rifles 2 Molotov Cocktails 2 Grenades The pile also contains an AMMO BOX so be careful! * Area Tips: There isn't anything in the back of the vans so don't waste your time. I find the best thing to do is to run and pick up the ammo in the pile, ignoring the first guy, then to run back to behind the van that where you started. Hiding behind the van will use up 30 seconds before the bad guys hit. If you shoot-dodge back and forward then you should be well protected as all the creators are N so they need to run to you to get you. * Estimated Times 1:30 - Average 2:00 - Good 2:30 - Excellent 3:00 - Super Human ii) CONSTUCTION SITE --------------------- * Location: This area is the constuction site that Max runs around when you are Mona. * Starting Ammo: 9mm pistol - 100 bullets MP5 - 100 cartridges Molotovs - 3 Grenades - 3 * Reference Point: North is facing the direction that you start in, facing the temporary building * Creators: 2 at an E point, one that fires first The next to fire is in a central point at the SW edge of the building The next group to fire are located SW, S, and SE The last to fire are N and NE * Painkillers: 3 in a box W in the sunken alley 3 in a box NW corner 3 in a box upstairs SE corner of the building 6 in two boxes on high scaffolding near the start - Shoot off using MP5 * Ammo Boxes 3/4 piled up S 2 piled up near the NE point * Extra Ammo: No extra ammo in this area * Area Tips: The only exit from the sunken alley is S. Therefore if you jump into it, or more likely accidently shoot dodge into it the only way out is S. Beware that the bad guys will throw a load of grenades into the alley if you are in it, so keep the amount of time that you are in there to a minimum. Be aware that if you take an elevated position on the building that there are two ways up so watch your back! Shoot down the boxes on the scaffolding the moment the level starts so that you can pick them up later as you won't have time later. * Estimated Times 1:15 - Average 1:30 - Good 1:45 - Excellent 2:00 - Super Human iii) MANOR GARDEN ------------------- * Location: This area is the garden in the middle of Woden's mansion. * Starting Ammo: 9mm pistol - 100 bullets MP5 - 100 cartridges Molotovs - 3 Grenades - 3 * Reference Point: North is facing the large door just the the right of the start point or when facing away from the balcony. * Creators: The first to fire is in the NW corner The next two to fire are in the N and the S. Both of these are hidden under arches. The final two are on the balcony in the SE and SW corners * Painkillers: 3 in a box NW 3 in a box NE 3 in a box W 3 in a box on balcony S * Extra Ammo: No extra ammo on this level * Ammo Boxes: One central One SE One on balcony S * Area Tips: This is a difficult area due to the lack of cover and it being very small. All the pillars are too small to hide behind. The best place to go is on to the balcony and snipe people using the MP5. If you do this then watch out for guys coming up the stairs just enough to shoot you. Also get out of there when the balcony creators start firing. Be careful of the ammo box on the balcony. The bad guys can hit this from the ground. * Estimated Times 1:00 - Average 1:15 - Good 1:30 - Excellent 1:45 - Super Human iv) USED CAR LOT ------------------ * Location: This area is the car lot owned by Vinnie Cognetti and is the part that you have to keep him alive in when he is dressed as Captain Baseball Bat Boy. !NB - This area has two distinct sections one outside and one inside! * Starting Ammo: 9mm pistol - 100 bullets Shotgun - 100 cartridges Molotovs - 3 Grenades - 3 * Reference Point: North is facing the direction that you start in when inside facing the windows, and when outside when facing the long wall. * Creators: INSIDE - There are two creators, one W which fires first and one E which fires second OUTSIDE - The two SE and E fire first Then the one situated NW Then the two situated SW and W * Painkillers: INSIDE - 2 in a cupboard W 2 in a cupboard SW 3 in a box NE OUTSIDE - 3 in a box NE 3 in a box in fenced area NW 2 on the floor SW * Extra Ammo: INSIDE - 3 grenades table S 3 molotov cocktails S 4 molotov cocktails in box SE OUTSIDE - 3 molotov cocktails on floor SW * Ammo Boxes: INSIDE - Two NE and centrally OUTSIDE - None * Area Tips: Inside only has two creators but you are operating in an enclosed space so avoiding shots is difficult. Also bear in mind that the enemies from outside can come through the windows! What works best for me is to collect all the ammo from inside and max out my painkillers then head outside where there is more room. You may need to take out a couple of the guys who spawn in the time it takes you to get outside but it's not too difficult. The best place to head is either the W side of the Land Rover or into the SW corner where there is plenty of time before the nearby creators start firing. * Estimated Times 1:30 - Average 1:45 - Good 2:00 - Excellent 2:30 - Super Human v) SCAFFOLDING ---------------- * Location: This is the area of scaffolding from near the end of the first Mona section. * Starting Ammo: 9mm pistol - 100 bullets Shotgun - 100 cartridges Molotovs - 3 Grenades - 3 * Reference Point: North is facing the centre from the point that you start from. * Creators: The first to fire is the one that is in a SW region, nearly in the centre The next two to fire are in the NW and W The next group to fire are N, NE and E * Painkillers: 3 in a box that is in a N direction under the yellow scaffolding 6 in two boxes that are at the very top of the scaffolding reachable by the series of planks * Extra Ammo: Also at the top of the scaffolding are at least two Ingrams with enough ammo to max them out The pile also contains an AMMO BOX so be careful! * Area Tips: This is a difficult yet fun level. This is a highly explosive level. There are a whole host of fuel barrels and ammo boxes scattered all over the area. Once one goes off it creates a wave effect with ammo boxes flying and exploding everywhere. You are highly likely to get blown up instead of being shot. However the explosions also kill off the bad guys as well which can mean that you can survive for long periods of time with a lot of them around. If you see a barrel or ammo box about to blow get out of there. The best thing to do is run then shoot dodge out of the way to gain maximum distance. There are only a small number of painkillers so try and get them early as the explosions often send them flying and you won't be able to find them later. If you do decide to go for the top of the scaffolding then be careful. Not only do you have to get up but you also have to get down. Bear in mind that there is an ammo box up there so one hit from a bad guy and it goes BOOM! The fall from that height will also kill you. I personally have never gained anything from going up there. If you are brave then you can start a 'controlled explosion' yourself and clear out an area of barrels and boxes and then try and stay in this area to fight. The best advice is to keep moving around and never stop running or shoot dodging and you are less likely to be blown up. * Estimated Times 1:00 - Average 1:30 - Good 1:45 - Excellent 2:00 - Super Human *************************************************************************** END OF GUIDE ***************************************************************************
