But rather than taking the role of a ronin warrior, as in the "Way of the Samurai" series, or a ninja assassin, as in the "Tenchu" and "Shinobido" games, you are but a thief. The main character, Ebizou, doesn't kill or even injure anyone, he only steals, and if possible, he only steals from the rich to give to the poor. Historically, there are a few Japanese Robin Hood stories; Ishikawa Goemon, of the 16th century, and Nezumi-kozou, of the 19th century. Kamiwaza is likely based on the latter, both because of the time in which it takes place, and a few references during the actual game. The title itself, Kamiwaza, probably has a double meaning. The more obvious is "Godly Technique", referring to Ebizou's acrobatic thievary. Less obvious, is "Divine Acts". This second meaning makes sense both because Acquire already made a game called "Tenchu" (天誅, Divine Punishment/The Wrath of Heaven), and because of a number of religious references made throughout the game. Of course, there are differences between the wrath of God and the will of the Buddha, but you can make your own judgements. -------------------------- 1.2 About the Translation -------------------------- Because Kamiwaza doesn't have a timeline set in stone the way the "Way of the Samurai" games do, I've had to string together each of the cutscenes in relative order to how they appear in the story. I've also removed a few scenes that make absolutely no sense without context or don't totally relate to the story. My only hope of fitting every scene into this guide is to get a copy of the 'Kamiwaza Complete Game Guide', which supposedly tells you when and where to find every event. If anybody can tell me how to get copy and not be killed by shipping fees, that would be great. ALSO, I did not magically pull this 'script' out of thin air! I transcribed the entire thing myself before translating it! How, you ask? By watching Corii-san's massive Kamiwaza playthrough videos on NicoNicoDouga (a sort-of Japanese YouTube). So many thanks to him, and you can check out his blog for links to his videos here: http://corii2.blog117.fc2.com/ This translation isn't perfect, and you may notice I've taken a few liberties where I didn't think the Japanese translated to English very well. On the other hand, it is my first line-by-line translation, so if for some reason you are familiar with Japanese (and nice enough to know the difference between something I changed intentionally and an actual mistake), please give me feedback or corrections on the GameFAQs Kamiwaza board. ------------------------ 1.3 Using this Document ------------------------ So basically what I've done is transcribed each scene in the relative order they appear in the game, and then translated it. Get ready for some spoilers: The "Main Storyline" will take you all the way from the beginning of the game to the point where Ebizou escapes from the prison. Then, depending on what level Suzuna's health is, you'll start heading down one of three paths: Suzuna's Health = Level 2 : Ainosuke Path (section 3.1) Suzuna's Health = Level 3 : Byakumon's Path (section 3.2) Suzuna's Health = Level 4+: Suzuna's Path (section 3.3) Suzuna's Health = MAX : Suzuna's Path + True Ending Epilogue (section 3.4) Noticeably missing from the translation are the 'Worst' ending, and the cutscenes that show Suzuna's health improving. I'm saving these for the inevitable Kamiwaza Walkthrough, where I'll describe in detail how Suzuna's health fluctuates. =================== 2.0 Main Storyline =================== ----------------------- 2.1 Cast of Characters ----------------------- 『海老三』 Ebizou The main character. 『藍之助』 Ainosuke Ebizou's mentor, whom he often refers to as 兄貴, meaning brother (as often used by people in a gang) 『すずな』 Suzuna An abandoned girl that Ebizou takes on as his own daughter. 『元締め』 The Boss Proprietor of the 'Thieves' Bathhouse', they call her 'motojime' (元締め), which literally means boss. 『おやっさん』 Oyassan A skilled instructor who works under the Boss. He actually has voiced lines, so I added him here, but he's a minor character. 『天津』 Amatsu The head of a government agency that hunts down criminals. 『お夏』　Onatsu A female thief that looks like a man in drag. Oh Acquire, will you ever grow up? 『百紋』　Byakumon A female thief who shows up later in the game. 『銀狐』 Silver Fox A member of the Silver Ravens, and a ruthless murderer. Steve's Note: One of the things I love about Acquire's games like this and Way of the Samurai is that there is a deep story, of which you are only given bits and pieces. For this ending in particular, Ebizou adopts the idea that there is a grey area of the law which allows people of conscience to live on either side of it (hence chivalrous thieves, kindly merchants, etc.). His disgust at Amatsu, Byakumon, and Ainosuke derives from the idea that they waver between these two sides of the law. The word he uses is "外道", which, in addition to plainly referring to a bad person, also refers to a heretic. While this original meaning is more or less out of use today, Ebizou's actions in other routes (as well as the religion of the townspeople) suggest he was using the word to mean "non-Buddhist". So you can read this ending philosophically and psychologically, or religiously. Remember that Ebizou himself flip-flopped between the honest life and thievary.
