It includes the staples of most extreme sports games of the time. Characters with exaggerated personalities, courses to equal said riders, a fillable special meter to pull off impossible, physics destroying tricks. Its also can be excessively hard and frustrating! Jet X2O also lacks a story. The manual boils it down to simply to: "You've shown you're crazy enough for these races by just showing up. Now prove you're outrageous enough to win.". Jet X2O is also "highly experimental (but clean burning!) next-gen hydrogen fuel". They, unfortunately, didn't build a up world like SSX did. No dropping a iceberg in a Hawaii harbor or building a pin- ball machine just to showoff. They just went "here are some courses, go at it". Basically, Jet X2O is the best extreme jet skiing game EA Sports BIG surprisingly didn't make. With some heavy influence from SSX Tricky, it really does feel like it would've been from BIG; Instead it was made by a lesser known company called Killer Game. Outside Jet X2O, their only other efforts include some non extreme sports games on the original PlayStation and a puzzle game on the PSP called Frantix. Information of Killer Game is even more scarce than that of Jet X2O. Here's hoping this FAQ made 16 years later will rectify at least one of those. =================================================================== ///Controls (cntl) =================================================================== Menu Controls- Left analog stick/D-pad...........Highlight menu items X.................................Select items Triangle..........................Back O.................................Options Watercraft Controls- X.................................Accelerate Square............................Turbo/Modify tricks Triangle..........................Cycle 3 different cameras Left analog stick/D-pad...........Steer/Shift rider's weight Down......................."Hydroplane" Down + Left/Right.........."Sliding" Turn Up + Left/Right............Sharp Turn Down tap, Up...............Subdive Down tap, Up, Down.........Subdive Jump R1................................Tricks (Details in Tricks) R2..................../ L1.............../ L2........../ The handling is not as cut and dry as it may seem at first glance: -The jet skis in the game steer starting with the rear of the machine. -Waves, currents, swells and wakes of the other riders all effect your turning. The manual also states the balance stat effects it as well. I personally have not noticed much of an effect. -Boosting also helps fight against currents pushing you. The stability stat does have some effect on that as well. -You also have to be accelerating to be able to turn; unlike something like Wave Race where you can turn in place even at a dead stop. -What the manual calls "Hydroplaning" is the equivalent to holding Up in a snowboarding game. On average, it increases your top speed by about 7 to 14 mph, depending on the conditions. -"Hydroplaning" also stiffens up the turning considerably, making it feel less squirrely at lower stats. It should let you take turns gently without having to do constant tiny adjustments. The later crafts will slide a bit, but should still corner gently even with the more extreme currents. -The timing on the Subdive Jump is rather quick. Tap Down, then quickly hold Up just a little bit, then hold/tap Down. Holding down gives you a bit more hang time when jumping out of the water. -Subdive Jump height is mostly determined by speed. Boosting will give a much higher jump than non-boosting. Speed stat also has a minor effect on the height. =================================================================== ///Tricks (trix) =================================================================== Jet X2O, like most extreme sports games at the time, went with the 4 shoulder button scheme for tricks. These are the same across all characters and crafts. Tricks also change your orientation in the air; leaning to the left, back, etc. Jet X2O also does not have point degradation for repeating tricks! Unlike most extreme sports games at the time, there is no pre-winding jumps. There is no Spinning either, only rolls and flips. These can be done in conjunction with all the tricks, including signature tricks. If you're at an extreme angle in the air, you will not be able to flip or roll. -Tapping Left then Right or vice versa, will cause you to Barrel Roll -Tapping Up then Down or vice versa, will cause you to Flip Hold Down and Boosting can sometimes result in a "Wheelie". Tricks where you do not hang off the back of your craft can be preformed while doing a "Wheelie". Landing tricks is obviously the most important part. You'll want to land in the water, but you can land on... land... sometimes. Objects like signs and buoys will instantly cause your tricks to fail. What's confusing is that SOME land counts, not all of it. Some rock obstacles will cause you to fail, and others won't. If it looks like it was sculpted from the surrounding landscape, it more than likely be safe to land on. But if looks like a generic rock that could be on any level may cause the trick to fail. Tricks also reduce the amount of time you spend in the air, so for larger jump shortcuts, its best not to trick during them, except at higher stats. Hitting walls or more annoyingly, other riders, while doing tricks also makes your tricks fail and staggers you in the air for a few second. Nothing is more annoying than an AI rider landing on top of you, just as you are about to land your 15x combo. If you think you are about to hit a wall, sign or rider, hold off till the collision happens, then try to use your remaining time to do some tricks. S will stand for the Square button, which is to modify the trick. The lay out of the list will go as such: Buttons ----- Name of the trick ----- Direction it will tilt the craft R1 ---------------------- CanCan -------------------- Right R1 + S ------------------ SeatStand ----------------- Back R2 ---------------------- Double Can ---------------- Left R2 + S ------------------ Spine Splitter ------------ Right L1 ---------------------- NacNac -------------------- Left L1 + S ------------------ X2O ----------------------- None L2 ---------------------- Bar Hop ------------------- Front L2 + S ------------------ Backward Tsunami ---------- Front R1 + R2 ----------------- Pommel Horse -------------- None R1 + R2 + S ------------- Bar Bender ---------------- Front R1 + L1 ----------------- Bicycle ------------------- Right R1 + L1 + S ------------- The Lounge ---------------- None R1 + L2 ----------------- Pendulum ------------------ None R1 + L2 + S ------------- TomaHawk ------------------ Left L1 + R2 ----------------- Superman ------------------ None L1 + R2 + S ------------- Superman Seat Grab -------- Back & Right L1 + L2 ----------------- Cordova ------------------- None L1 + L2 + S ------------- Cliffhanger --------------- Back L2 + R2 ----------------- Indian Air ---------------- Front & Right L2 + R2 + S ------------- Backwards Somersault ------ None *R1 + R2 + L1 ------------ Sky Dive ------------------ Back *R1 + R2 + L2 ------------ Straight Up --------------- None *L1 + L2 + R1 ------------ Backward Superman --------- None *L1 + L2 + R2 ------------ Back Breaker -------------- Left R1 + L1 + R2 + L2 ------- Heart Attack -------------- None R1 + L1 + R2 + L2 + S --- DoubleHanded Heart Attack - Back * The modified version of these tricks are the character specific signature tricks which are different for every character. They'll be covered in the character section. =================================================================== ///Gameplay (gmpy) =================================================================== ///COMBOS (cmbo) Comboing tricks is as simple as just doing multiple tricks in a row in the air. You'll want the highest possible combo multiplier when landing your tricks. The multiplier starts at 1x and for every trick gains .5 to it. Modifying a trick also counts towards the combo. Repeating tricks also does not degrade the adding to the combo count. Examples: NacNac and nothing else would = 1x NacNac + Barrel Roll = 1.5x NacNac + CanCan + NacNac = 2X NacNac + X2O + NacNac = 2x NacNac + CanCan + Barhop + Flipping through all of it = 2.5x Doing a signature trick then ending it with a quick combo of faster tricks help build up the value quickly. 10k from the signature trick then getting that propped up by a 6x combo will be making up the bulk of your points during most races. But there are some exceptions. You can also extend combos by landing into a subdive jump. Its extremely fiddly and often not worth attempting, as is slows you down greatly during a race. But if you need that last little bit, may be worth do. Just enter the command for a subdive just as you land in the water before the point total is added up. Performing a bunch of single flips is also another way to inflate your combo multiplier. So instead of just holding 1 long flip, perform 1 complete flip, pause, then do another. You can chain them together quite easily. Same goes for barrel rolls, but you run a higher risk of throwing yourself off balance. ///BOOST (bost) The bar on the right of the screen is your boost. It's segmented into 10 blocks. You fill it by doing tricks or by going through different colored buoys; Yellow gives you 1 block, Orange gives 2 and Red gives 4. Hitting the gas just as it says GO! during the count down will also give you a small amount of boost. Most I seem to get is 3 blocks when its well timed. Once you have 10 blocks, any other buoys or tricks will put your boost into "Mega" mode. No matter how small of a trick or color of buoy, it will always fill the Mega bar to max. Mega will keep draining until it reaches the 10th block again. So a chain of very short, small wheelies can keep it going. During Mega is also when you can start performing the signature tricks. If Mega ends while you are in the air during a signature trick, it will end the trick early. Barring some signature tricks that have 1 set animation you can't hold. ///GAMEMODES (gmde) Single Event lets you choose between: Combo - Race for the fastest time and highest trick score. Race - Race for the fastest time and some ramps have been removed. Trick - Try for the highest trick score while on a timer. Multipliers are added to the courses. Dark Blue Xs are 2x, Medium Blue are 3x and Light Blue is 4x. Tricks landed add to the timer. World Event is the main bulk of the game. It's where you unlock characters, crafts, courses and costumes. It's in the Combo gamemode type, so you have to master both racing and tricking at the same time. World Event has 3 difficulties; Starts off with Amateur, to Professional then to Expert. The AI will become a bit more ruthless and the currents, waves and swells become a bit more violent, and the trick scores become higher. Courses are locked to difficulty. So if you can't beat Professional at least once, you can't use the last 2 courses in single event or character specific watercrafts. Amateur - SlicStream, DeltaFaktor, Hyperion Gorge, MesoTec Professional - all Amateur courses, PermaFrost, NeoTropic Expert - All Amateur and Pro courses, Aquatica, Metro Nox Big Wave is a small self contained map that is just for free roaming. Use it to get use to the handling, test tricks, practice subdives or just explore. =================================================================== ///Characters (chra) =================================================================== 8 colorful characters make up this games cast. While they have different stats, outside of their signature tricks, they don't feel all that different from each other to play. The rider's stats have a minor effect at best on how you will play. The stats in the manual don't line up with what's in the game either. Lia Cordoso for example, is list as 8, 4 , 4, 9 in the manual, while in game her strength is higher than her weight. The stats are as follows: Balance - The only stat the manual mentions and claims it aids in turning. Strength - Less likely to fall off when colliding with terrain. Weight - Doesn't seem to effect trick leaning or anything else. Tricks - Minor effect on how fast tricks are performed. There's 2 types of Signature tricks, ones you can hold and ones that play a single usually longer animation. The holdable Sig. Tricks gain points faster than regular tricks when held and tend to have faster animations. Single animation Sig. Tricks tend to give a big burst of points (roughly 5k~14k) but take awhile to play out. What ones to use will come with experience. While listing the signature tricks I will describe them as such: Button Combo - Name of Trick - Tilt Direction - Hold/Single Animation - Rough estimate of the animation length ///TAYLOR JORDAN (tajd) A big dumb dude bro. The first 2 are the same for every characters, but the 3rd is unique to each character. The 3rd craft is also what really makes each character feel different. Like Vladi's slower accelerating & lowering handling craft, vs Lia's very fast accelerating & nimble handling craft. You can gain stats for the crafts in World Event. I'm honestly unsure how their points are gained, as sometimes, even though I place first in everything, I get less points to allocate. If anyone can clarify this, it'd be a big help. The later crafts are also just flat out better. I think even if the Tsunami had max speed stat, may not be able to compete with the others. I'll give a very rough estimate of the craft stats, since they are just a vague yellow bar with no numbers. The descriptions are from the manual. The stats are as follows: Handling - The steering response Speed - The top speed. Accel - How fast it can reach top speed. Stability - How steadily the craft rides in the water. ///AFTERSHOCK The first basic craft that everyone gets. Its fairly poor over all, but lets you get use to the handling of the game. I mostly just dump all the stats into speed. Interestingly the manual refers to it as The Crusher. Handling - 3 Speed - 3 Accel - 5 Stability - 7 ///TSUNAMI The 2nd craft you'll get, and its not that spectacular either. Way better than the Aftershock, and can do non-boosting subdive jumps decently. The manual refers to it as Jammer X. Handling - 5 Speed - 5 Accel - 7 Stability - 7 ///RENEGADE Taylor's personal craft. It's stupidly low handling stat does not hinder its turning ability at all, oddly enough. It also seems faster than most other crafts, I beat most of my best times by 5~15 seconds with it on every course. The manual has a screen shot of it and its called the USA in it. Handling - 2 Speed - 8 Accel - 6 Stability - 7 ///MASTERMIND Luc La Mouche's personal craft. Nothing much to note about it. Its a bit slick while turning, but nothing like the Golden Tiger. The balanced stats are nice. Handling - 6 Speed - 8 Accel - 5 Stability - 6 ///VALKYRIE Karin's personal craft. The low handling stat.. DOES effect how it handles. which is not good! Its really sluggish to control, worse than Vladi's in some cases. Handling - 3 Speed - 9 Accel - 4 Stability - 5 ///DARKTHORNE Eva's personal craft. Completely unremarkable. Worst looking too. Handling - 4 Speed - 7 Accel - 5 Stability - 5 ///COUNTERFORCE Vladi's personal craft. Super slow accelerating and very sluggish handling. Looks neat though! Handling - 4 Speed - 9 Accel - 3 Stability - 9 ///GOLDEN TIGER Vittorio's personal craft. Its low stability makes it a bit slick to handle. Has a nice Castrol type paint job. Handling - 6 Speed - 9 Accel - 6 Stability - 2 ///SUNBURST Lia's personal craft. Looks almost like a VW Beetle in jet ski form. Has good stats. Offset by Lia's very low strength, as she'll be thrown from it often even for the slightest of nudges. Handling - 8 Speed - 8 Accel - 9 Stability - 8 ///MIXMASTER Kenji's personal craft. Looks nothing like it does in the intro video. Nice stability leads it to not getting pushed around by the currents as much. You can barely feel its low acceleration. Handling - 6 Speed - 7 Accel - 2 Stability - 8 ==================================================================== ///Courses (curs) ==================================================================== If this game has anything that stands out, is its 8 courses. If you watch the "Making Of" video in the options, you learn quickly they did not like the flat circuit, buoy based jet ski games that have come before. They went with an unexplored direction for jet ski games, Verticality! This is why the game feels so much like SSX, since its basically downhill jet skiing. Just freeze the water and BAM, you have a brand new SSX course! What also makes these courses feel so great is due to the sheer amount of paths they have. They wanted less restrictive buoy racing and they nailed it. I don't think there's a single "slow cut" in the game. You know, those short cut looking paths in some racing games that end up being much longer than the intended route? I have yet to see anything like that in this game; the main route seems to be the slowest, everything else is just faster. I don't feel it necessary to mark down EVERY other path. As long as you take some side routes, you should be doing just fine. But I may go back and make note of some of the larger time saving paths. For now, I'm just going to list the estimated amount of trick points necessary to place first per difficulty and I'll leave my personal best times as some sort of guide for getting 1st. I estimated the amount of points the AI tends to get and rounded it up by 2k. Since they AI's scores aren't set and fluctuate quite a bit sometimes, I recommend getting at least 5k or more just as a safe buffer. More is always better! ///SLICSTREAM (sltr) A lovely jaunt down a mountainside river leading through some red wood trees and a hydroelectric dam! Wish there was an easier way? Before I tell you about the trick you can do, I recommend at least TRYING to play the intended way with signature tricks and such. Doing the following kind of kills some of the fun. But if you are at wits end, here's an easy way to completely trivialize trick score goals: Pendulum to TomaHawk. The time it takes to perform those tricks is extremely short. Pendulum counts as a trick and combo before its animation even gets going, and the time it takes to start a TomaHawk is just as short. So by simply holding R1 + L2 and rhythmically pressing Square, you'll quickly gain a high combo. Pendulum and TomaHawk are worth quite a few points too. Just watch the riders right leg to know when to hold and let go of the square button; fully extended then to bent over the seat. If you add in multiple, individual flips to the equation, you can get some stupidly high combos quickly. You can get 100k points off the very first ramp in Metro Nox with this trick. -You can skip the whole circular ramp part with the tiki statues in NeoTropic. When coming up to where the path splits, aim to the left of the stalactite. The bottom of it isn't solid, but its best to be avoided. Perform a boosting subdive jump and don't do any tricks as it kills your hang time. Spend that time instead angling your craft to the right. You should land safely onto the end of the left path, cutting out the very long and slow ride down it. It's fairly consistent too! =================================================================== ///Secrets (scrt) =================================================================== Don't know of any. You don't get anything for beating the game with every character. Nor do you get anything for the fastest Race and Trick scores. =================================================================== ///Glitches (glch) =================================================================== Sometimes the AI becomes super competent and finishes NeoTropic in 2 minutes. No idea what causes it and I've tried following them but never witnessed it. It also seems to happen on Hyperion Gorge as well, but not AS extreme. The inverse of the above is true also; Sometimes the AI will become brain-dead and you'll beat them by 1~2 minutes. The race meter on the left freaks out A LOT on Hyperion Gorge. For a few frames when selecting a craft or character you don't have unlocked yet, you can see the stats and description. Not that amazing, but its there. You can flip or roll forever on the land. As long as you don't use any other tricks. Fun to mess around with it in Big Wave. You can sometimes end up racing yourself! I noticed while playing as Vladi. If you can subdive jump far enough at the end of the course to land on the stage part, you can potentially keep sliding till you reach an out of bounds trigger while your character does their victory dance. Placing the camera out in the middle of no where. Sometimes Eva del Toro will just stand there like a lemon, looking around, during her victory animation.
