FAQ 2. Manga Mode Walkthrough 3. Music 4. This Document -Actual contents coming when I get the important parts done ^^;- ------- 1. FAQ ------- Q. Is there an English version of the game? A. Nope. Copies of the game sold in english/chinese speaking countries come with a brief English instruction card, but all the in-game menus and voices are Japanese.. Still, that's what FAQs are for ^^; Q. Is there a Multiplayer mode? A. Nope. I'm pretty sure the arcade supported Multiplayer, but it seems to have been dropped, for the home version. Q. Is (X) song in the game? A. The manual contains a big list of songs, but I'm not 100% sure if it's complete, since it misses a few songs that appear on the OST. From what I've seen, the only popular songs noticeably missing are Deja Vu and Burning Up For You. All the most popular Eurobeat (and original Avex Mode) songs seem to be there. Were talking literally 40 songs from the anime, 33 of which can be played during the race, and around 7 of which are used as BGM/menu/cutscene music. Q. I can only see 8 songs! A. The rest of the songs can be unlocked by playing Manga Mode. Q. Where's Tak? A. I flat-out refuse to use the names from Tokyopop's "wonderful" english translation/rape of the manga series. The names used in the guide are the acutal character names used in the game Q. Do I need a steering wheel to play this game? A. ..No.. Despite Sega's best efforts to market the GT Force wheel as a necessity, the game still plays best with ye olde analogue stick. It is of course, compatible with most PS2 steering wheels, although I personalty wouldn't recommend any over a Dual Shock. Q. Can I make the music louder? A. Yes. The volume switch is on your TV ^^; On a serious note volume is somewhat dynamic (as it is in the anime), so it's intended as background music, not a distraction. Of course, if you really need to hear it, you can always turn off the engine noise and voices, in the Sound Option menu. Q. How do I drift? A. Just oversteer the car, either under breaking, or by shifting the weight of the car. It's very intuitive, and your probably already doing it without thinking. The game is based on the manga (not the anime), so drifting isn't as exaggerated, and you'll only drift through the corner with enough speed to keep your revs up, not sideways, like the anime sometimes portrays. Q. What does the main menu mean? A. Tada! : Legend Of The Streets (Arcade Mode) Story Mode (Manga Mode) Time Attack Records & Replays Introduction Of Cars (Car Gallery) Load & Save Options -------------- 2. Manga Mode -------------- The Manga mode covers the entire storyline of Initial D, upto the current arc of the Japanese manga. One of the game's main attractions to western gamers is the fact that the storyline journeys well past the point when the anime series ends, and reveals exactly what happens after the movie, and the formation of 'Project D'. The story is played out through a series of hand-drawn, animated cut-scenes, and stills from the actual manga, all voiced by the anime series' original voice actors. Of course, most of the story involves Takumi racing, which is where you come in, taking control of Takumi's Eight-Six, and fulfilling the requirements of each race. At the end of each stage, you'll be graded on your performance (usually the time you took to complete the race), and awarded with hidden music and car galleries, if you reach a certain rank. As far as I know, each stage will reward you with a car gallery if you attain a B rank. Some stages also reward you with new music, should you attain a C rank. The walkthrough notes each stage's hidden rewards, and their requirements. Note that the walkthrough's current game is to help English speaking players understand the storyline, and the requirements for completing each stage (all written and narrated in Japanese). The storyline plays out slightly differently to the anime, but since I'm more well versed in the anime than I am in listening to Japanese people talk about cars, that's my primary source for recollecting the details of each scene, and the names of each stage/act. I'm assuming there are no major differences, but if you see something very wrong, feel free to E-mail me ^^; -Getting Started- To enter Manga Mode from the main menu, choose the 2nd option (5 letters, the last of which is ~). Note that storyline takes place over a number of years, and like the Manga, is split into 3 chronological sections (which you have to play in order). At first, only the first section (Initial D : First Stage) is open, so choose it. Next, we're given a choice of whether to play with Automatic (AT) or Manual (MT) transmission. Automatic transmission doesn't behave like it does in real life (which would hinder the control you have over the vehicle), but more like a co-driver sitting beside you, operating your clutch and gear stick. It's much easier than manual , and doesn't have many drawbacks, so don't let it put you off. If you DO choose automatic, note that you can still shift down to a lower gear at any time you want, with the L1 button. Every time you enter Manga Mode from the main menu, you'll be given this choice, so unlike the arcade game, it's not a big deal which you start off with. After your gear choice, the stage selection screen gives you only one option. It shouldn't be too hard ^^; Each stage opens with a cut-scene (which can be skilled with the start button), and then a mission screen. At the bottom are 2 buttons : -Stage Explanation Screen- Begin (blue) Course Map (green) When your ready to race, hit the blue one ^^; Should you fail the stage for any reason (running out of time / not meeting the requirements), then you'll see the ranking screen, followed by a selection of 4 coloured buttons : -Stage Failed- Try Again (blue) Quit (red) Should you pass (yay!) you'll see the "Clear!!" screen, and a menu: -Clear!!- Replay (green) Save Replay (green) Next (blue) Selecting "next" will take you to the "Stage Complete" screen : -Stage Complete- Try Again (blue) Next Stage (blue) Stage Select (green) Quit (red) At some point your going to want to save the game, in which case you need to choose "quit" from one of the menus. This will take you to the "Save?" screen, which consists of 2 options - Just choose the red button to save, and keep choosing the red buttons, until the process is complete. When you hear a short "beep", press X to return to the main menu. Ready? Then let's get ready to enjoy a story so epic, I'm going to get repetitive strain-injury, just typing it out ^_^ -Initial D : First Stage- The game opens with Bunta Fujiwara preparing his car for a tofu delivery. Bunta owns a small tofu shop, and every morning, his son Takumi helps him deliver the tofu to the top of Mt Akina (as he's done for the past 5 years). To make sure the tofu doesn't spill, Bunta fills a cup of water, and places it on the dashboard. As long as Takumi doesn't spill the water, then the tofu in the trunk shouldn't be damaged, during the deliver. As Takumi sets off, he has a flashback to the events of the previous day : Takumi is walking to work with his school friend (and co-worker), Itsuki, who drones on about his favourite subject : cars. Although he works in a garage, Takumi doesn't care much for cars, unlike Itsuki, and their other co-worker, Iketani, who runs the local street racing team : The Akina Speed Stars. Stage 01 - The Fastest Tofu Driver On Mt Akina (Part 1) BGM : #01 Space Boy Track : Akina Mission Deliver the Tofu to a customer at the top of Mount Akina. To make sure the tofu doesn't spill, Bunta has placed a cup of water on the dashboard. As long as the water doesn't spill, neither will the tofu. Drive to the top of Mount Akina, without spilling the water in the cup. Strategy The water only spills when the car hits the walls on either side of the track. Heavy breaking, erratic driving, badly timed gear shift and drifting are all acceptable, and in places, encouraged. This opening mission is really an exercise in learning how to keep the car in the centre of the track, and also an introduction to one of the most crucial parts of the Akina track. There's no real strategy to this mission, just drive cautiously up until the big hairpin bend, and then floor it along the straight sections at the end of the course. The finish is around half the way up Mt Akina. Being the opening stage and all, time isn't really a factor, so your #1 concern is water spillage, and your priority is making sure the car doesn't touch the sides of the course. Drifting will save you a little time, but since the grade at the end is based on how much water is left in the cup, and the course goes uphill, it's not worth the risk. Spoils [Gallery] Impreza STi Ver.VI (GC8) After Takumi and Itsuki leave work, Iketani's boss arrives, and asks Iketani about the Akina Speed Stars. Iketani boats that the team (consisting of Iketani and Kenji) are the best around, and the fastest drivers on their home track - Mt Akina. Iketani's boss corrects him, and tells of a racer from his childhood, who possessed 'god-like' driving talents. Although the mysterious driver long gave up street racing, he now owns a tofu shop, and still drives up Mt Akina every morning at 4am, in order to deliver his tofu. When he's done with his delivery, he likes to race back down the track, as if he was still racing... Stage 02 - The Fastest Tofu Driver On Mt Akina (Part 2) BGM : #12 Speedy Speed Boy Track : Akina Mission Race the bottom of Mt Akina in under 3'40 (3 minutes 40 seconds) Strategy This is your first chance to drive the Akina downhill, so it's worth pushing your car to the limit, and learning to drive it quickly. Because your driving downhill (and thus carrying much more speed), the car will drift around every corner, without any special effort. Drifting around Akina is nowhere near as daunting as it should be, thanks to a very intuitive physics engine. The best way to learn the track is to just take the whole thing at full speed, and learn which corners require heavy breaking, and which require you to take your foot off the accelerator, in order to gently drift around. As you get to the 3rd sector of the track, you might recognise the series of 'S-Bends'. As before, the best way to take them is slowly, so slow down for the first one, then speed up and break in time to drift around the next. Repeat the process, and try to find the fastest racing line and breaking zone, for each one - this is where most of the early races are won or lost. Spoils [BGM] #12 - Speedy Speed Boy [Gallery] Levin SR (AE85) The next day at work, a parade of unfamiliar sports cars drive past the garage, where Iketani identifies them as The Red Suns - a famous racing team from Akagi. The Red Suns ask Iketani about the local racing team, prompting him to mention The Speed Stars, and foolishly accept a challenge to race the team on Mt Akina, late on Saturday night. That night, Takumi heads to his father's tofu shop to prepare for the next delivery, while The Red Suns invite The Speed Stars (with Itsuki) to a 'friendly drive' along Mt Akina. Again, Iketani foolishly accepts, and meets with Keisuke - the Red Suns representative who will race on Saturday night. Keisuke is far more arrogant than Iketani, and with good reason - along with his brother (Ryosuke), Keisuke is rather famous. His team is on a mission to tour the Gunma region of Japan, in order to defeat every local racing team, and set the fastest lap record for every track in the region. During the meeting between the teams, The Speed Stars are completely humiliated by Keisuke and his brother. After everyone leaves to prepare for the race on Saturday, Keisuke stays at the top of the mountain, and prepares for one more sprint down to the bottom of the track... Stage 03 - Super Tofu Drift BGM : #13 No One Sleep In Tokyo Track : Akina Mission Within 2'00, overtake Keisuke, and build up a lead of 40M. Strategy This stage is a lesson is overtaking, and more importantly : how to defend your position. Keisuke is an incredible driver, so don't worry about his car ever bumping into you. It should be noted that you can't crash into other cars in Initial D, so before you try it, be aware that all the drivers are skilled enough to always come as close as physically possible to your car, without ever touching it. One common tactic is to pull infront of the other car, and then break heavily, forcing them to break with your, in order to avoid going into the back of your car.. This doesn't work here, because not only is Keisuke faster during the low gears, but the aim of the stage is to pull away from him at all costs. The theory here is that Keisuke's car totally overpowers the Eight- Six, but doesn't drift with as much speed of precision.. It's surprising then, that the Eight-Six has a much higher top speed, and pulls away from Keisuke on the straights.. It's also surprising that I wrote this much of an explanation : Since you start with a higher speed than Keisuke, just overtake him on the inside of the first bend, and drive the track just as you did last time. As long as you don't break too much, he shouldn't be able to catch you. Spoils [BGM] #13 - No One Sleep In Tokyo [Gallery] S2000 (AP1) At the bottom of the hill, Keisuke questions how his FD could possibly have been overtaken by an Eight-Six. (which wasn't even trying to race him). I question this too, since Keisuke's FD never reached a speed of over 140 km/h o.O The next day, Keisuke shows up at the garage, and has Iketani fill his car up with petrol, and questions him about the mysterious Eight-Six that appeared out of nowhere, overtook him, and vanished into the distance. Iketani admits he doesn't know the driver (although his boss told him it was Bunta). Keisuke taunts Iketani, thinking the Eight-Six is The Speed Stars' secret weapon, and proclaims that he won't lose to it a 2nd time. Meanwhile, at school, Takumi gets pulled to one side by school friend Mogi : a cute girl who invites Takumi to take her to the beach. Takumi accepts, hoping to borrow his father's car to drive her there. Later that night, Iketani wanders around town in search of the Eight-Six, which he spots outside Bunta's Tofu Shop. Iketani confronts Bunta, and begs him to pass on his driving technique. Bunta refuses, telling Iketani that he has to learn for himself through experience. Iketani leaves disheartened, and decides to take Bunta's advice, heading to Mt Akina to practice the downhill. With so much stress on his mind, Iketani manages to crash into a wall, and smash up his car. As Takumi arrives home to try and sway Bunta into lending him the Eight-Six for his date with Mogi. Bunta refuses, and asks Takumi to race in Iketani's place. Takumi reluctantly agrees, as long as he can borrow the car for his date. Takumi arrives at the bottom of Akina to meet Itsuki, and a very paranoid Iketani, who begs Takumi to fetch his father. Takumi announces that he'll take his father's place, and reveals that he's 'already beaten' Keisuke's car on the Akina downhill, despite not knowing anything about cars. Well aware of Takumi's hatred for cars, Iketani is reluctant, but suddenly realises that Takumi's 5 years of tofu delivery point to him being the 'god- like' driver his boss mentioned. Takumi leaves Itsuki at the top of the hill, and calmly agrees to race Keisuke. Stage 04 - BGM : #06 Running In The 90s Track : Akina Mission Defend Iketani's honor, by beating Keisuke to the finish line Strategy The rolling start works in your favor, meaning you should be able to catch the FD quickly, and take him during the first corner. You're only racing the last 1/2 of the track here, so should Keisuke slip past you, you don't have -that- much time to catch up with him again. That said, Keisuke seems to lose an awful lot of speed after the series of s-bends, so if you can come out of the bends with a greater speed, you should be able to take him on the final straight Spoils [Gallery] RX-7 Type-R (FD3S) The next day at work, Iketani demands that Takumi take him for a ride in the Eight-Six, in order to see how Takumi drvies... Yes, it's a really short cut- scene ^^; Stage 05 - BGM : #03 Don't Stop The Music Track : Akina Mission Drive as hard as you can, and raise Iketani's fear meter to 100% Strategy Itekani's meter rises whenever you turn, and the faster you happen to be going at the time, the more the meter will rise. It starts to fall again whenever you drive in a straight line. The most obvious tactic is to drive around the track as quickly as possible, which will make Iketani faint around the end of the 2nd sector. If your going for an S-Rank (or an easy way out) then the quickest way to make him feint is to get up a bit of speed (150km/h), and then start swerving the car from left to right, as you head down the hill (the game will think your drifting, then correcting it a split second after starting the turn). It's a tough S-Rank to get, but you should be ok as long as you can get him to feint before the 4th turn. Spoils [Gallery] Silvia K-s (S13) To be continued... ---------- 3. Music ---------- A note on music : Although I haven't been able to rip the in-game BGM to figure out exactly how it works, all the songs in Initial D are broken down into 4 sections (Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge) The in-game BGM is mixed to loop over and over, until the race ends. This PS2 does this in real-time, by playing the various sections of the song in the following order : Intro > Verse > Chorus > Chorus > Bridge > Verse > Chorus > Chorus > Bridge It then goes back to the verse, and loops until the race ends. This intro is only played once, and if you listen closely, you can tell when the song loops, since the 'Intro > Verse' section isn't as well mixed as the 'Bridge > Verse' section. Since I absolutely love this stuff, I've noticed a few other people buying Initial D almost solely for it's soundtrack. I think we all know this means a predictable musical/lyrical guide for the in-game music ^^; note : The lyrics only contain the lyrics to the bridge and chorus (the parts that loop over). To avoid confusion, I've ignored anything in the intro (which isn't a part of the loop). If the intro is important, however, I'll mark the loop point with an asterisk (*). This is the point at which the loop begins. Also, In order to save space, I've only listed the chorus once, just remember that it repeats itself ^_^ - #01.
