Revision History== ======================= 0.94 - Mostly a steering wheel update with Mad Catz added. Thanks to everyone who contributed! And now I have a 79 character limit per line (With WordPad)which will make the people at GameFAQs a little more happy. Odie has also translated a magazine where it tells you how to get S rank for all of the stages. I also must thank Fujiwara AE86 for reposting it when we thought it was long gone! 0.89 - Props to DragonNight for telling me which cars and songs you'll unlock in Story Mode. Unlocking cars is for the bonus section where Iketani will tell you each car's strengths and weaknesses. Steering wheel section has been updated with great news on the Logitech MOMO Force. I have updated the F*** TOKYOPOP! section because the news of what TokyoPop did is much MUCH worse than I thought. Yes they changed EVERYTHING. I changed a few things in the car listings. First of all, the Efini/Infini 3 is NOT the GT-X Savanna. The Efini 3 was a limited edition of the FC3S Savanna. Second, the WRX STi GDB is NOT the Prodrive Style that was released in Europe. My bad! I'll add the new car (Atsurou Kawai's Skyline ER34) and it's parts courses later. Also, the character page has been slightly updated. Also updated is the Arcade Stage and Special Stage comparisons, and the menu listings and I added the Options Menu listings. Hopefully people can have a better understanding of the menus now instead of complaining about them being in Japanese. Lastly, on a off topic note. I want to congratulate the Minardi Formula 1 team and their driver Jos Verstappen for getting provisional pole position in Magny Cours last Friday. The first time Minardi had a pole position of anykind! More updates to come! 0.70 - The first version. Arcade Mode is mostly completed due to the fact that it's just like Arcade Stage Version 2. Part of the FAQ is unfinished. 1.1. Author's Note ================== I would like to say that this game is in Japanese, and I learned some stuff from help from some people, and a little bit of self experience. Also, for the cars, I went to the SEGA Rosso homepage, and InitialD.org and translated it through Altavista.com, but I tried to clarify a few things for the FAQ. Anyways, enjoy the FAQ! 1.2. F*** TOKYOPOP! =================== Why am I so hostile towards Tokyopop? Well they are translating the anime and manga to english here. And oh my god, did they butcher the anime BAD. They feel that "Westernizing" the names will make the anime more popular. This is not true! It only butchers the anime. It's like rape! We true, pure Initial D fans thought it was bad enough for them to change the names, but oh no, they went much further: The soundtrack HAS CHANGED. Instead of my worries of listening to Limp Bizkit or Eminem. We got something much much worse. What we got was this RETARDED rap by people who probably never listened to rap or hip hop in their lives and it sounds like something from Seasame Street. It goes something like "Da Eight Six Rolling down the track, Initial Drift, Initial Passion *a bunch of other crap that I couldn't bare to listen*" and THIS S*** REPLACED the energetic Eurobeat soundtrack! They also CHANGED THE BATTLE SCENES. They tried to added more visual affects to the car battles but it looked cheap and godawful. And get this, their slogan for Initial D is "Initialize Your Dreams!" What kind of g** s*** is that!? They ARE targeting Initial D to a bunch of little bastard children who probably don't know a thing about cars. People have been telling me that they think it could appeal to children to find out about the REAL Initial D. 100% untrue. Kids and other people are too racist and prejudice to care about the real Initial D. They will never find out what Initial D REALLY IS. You want to prove me wrong? BUY THE HONG KONG PIRATED DVDs, or if you can read Japanese THE ACTUAL DVDs FROM JAPAN. Tokyopop did piss anime fans off in the past however. When it was known as Mixx Entertainment and they had their Mixxzine, they included Sailor Moon as a special comic, then the owner of Mixx move Sailor Moon to another zine named "Smile!" (What kind of name is that!?) So this pissed off a ton of fans, and the Editor got so pissed he resigned. Anyways check below for list of name changes. Here's the list of names. Crap Names - Real Names Tak - Takumi Iggy - Itsuki Cole - Kouichirou Natalie - Natsuki Boss - Yuuichi Ry - Ryousuke K.T. - Keisuke Zack - Takeshi Maya - Mako Simone - Sayuki Kyle - Kyouichi Hawk - Seiji Aki - Wataru (Hey Tokyopop, Aki is not a American name! It's Finnish!) Carrie - Kazumi (Wataru's sister) Dice - Daiki Smiley - Sakai (Sakai literally means Smiley I think) Touch - Tomoyuki Kylie (Previously Kia) - Kyouko Danny - Kenta (What the hell is that?!) Caine - Kai Nobu - Nobuhiko (Uh, "Nobu" still sounds Japanese) Sid - Tsukamoto/Sakamoto However Shingo, and Bunta escaped with their real names. But doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of changing the names in the first place!? It gets worse. They are changing the dialogs, and get this they want to change Takumi into a PIZZA DELIVERY BOY instead of Tofu delivery driver! Why? To appeal to those big TV network corporate f*****s and put the show on TV! Also my friend Ryosuke had to sin and get volume 3 of the TokyoPop mangas for some reason. This is what he found. I'm sure he will repent someday. - Itsuki calling Takumi his "homie." like nearly every time. Homie? No one said that since 1991! - Tons of spelling and grammer errorz (like what I just did). - Changing the dialog completely. (I.E. Takumi: "I'm not going to let a dickweed like him win this race!") - Natsuki Mogi's scences with Papa at the "hotel": DELETED. - Listing the Trueno's engine runs on "Spirit, Talent, and Determination" (STD!) - Saying that a Rotary engine runs on one cylinder, thus more power (which is completely WRONG.) - Translation errors in future versions. Like saying Seiji Iwaki drives a Lancer Evolution VI (he actually drives a Lan Evo IV). - In another volume: Listing Takumi Fujiwara as a Akina SpeedStar even though he is not a team member. The whole result of "Americanizing" everything (which is like RAPE) is a butchered Initial D that is also a slap in the face to Japanese names and cultures (AKA Racisim). And get this...One of Stuart Levy's excuses to why he prefers dubbed to subtitles was; "subtitles covers up the art of the anime and ruins it." So here he is trying to call himself an artist with that excuse, trying everything he can to justify his butchering. Well I'm not a artist, but I believe I have the right to say that what Levy said was irrelevant and ignorant. My belief is subtitles are there to help people UNDERSTAND the whole art and concept of the anime, while keeping it's original form intact. While dubbed ruins the original form of this great piece of art (Initial D in this case.) Another thing! I don't believe the Japanese change the names when any American comics or cartoons are released in Japan. Like they don't refer Homer Simpson as "Hiroshi Sato" or some crap like that. They don't change Super Man's real name to a more "Japanese name." So why are the North American companies are changing everything to sound more "American"? It's a form of racisim! Now TokyoPop released a DVD with the original copies of Initial D on it. BUT! It also contains the "translated" episodes too. TokyoPop (while trying to appeal to teenagers in a pathetic, half-assed matter) calls it the "Tricked Out Edition." They also said it has "enhanced battle scenes" and you can do a bunch of other crap with it. "Enhanced battle scences"? Good god! How did they butcher the battle scences like Keisuke vs. Takumi for the first time? I don't want to know! Avoid it all costs. Besides, it's the first three episodes on DVD for in Japanese and English. So it's more like paying $20 for JUST THREE EPISODES!? What a rip off. You can get the translated DVDs by independent translators with all of the episodes for $40 Canadian on 4 DVDs! Do the math. The best way to boycott Tokyopop is to NOT buy ANY of their products. Buy fan translations of the anime instead! You can get those in places where there is a big Asian community. A note for the DVD owners: Buy the real versions, not the burned DVDs. The burned ones don't work on all machines! So that's pretty much it. F*** TOKYOPOP! ========================= ==2. What is Initial D?== ========================= Initial D is a popular anime and manga that takes place in the Gunma prefecture in Japan. The main character is Takumi Fujiwara, a 18 year old boy who became a drift style road racer. Takumi is in high school and has a job at the GS Gas Station (Esso in the manga.) Itsuki Takeuchi (Takumi's friend) and Iketani Kouichirou (the leader of the Akina Speed Stars) were working at the station, and they were talking about cars and drift techniques. When Takumi asked them what they were talking about and they laughed at him for his "stupidity" when it comes to cars. One night, Keisuke Takahashi of the popular Akagi Red Suns group was driving his Mazda RX-7 Type-R on Akina. Then a Hachiroku (literally means "eight six") came up from behind him and then they basically raced and Keisuke was defeated by the Hachiroku (an OLD Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86.) Keisuke, was pissed that his superior RX-7 was defeated by a old AE86! Meanwhile, Iketani was working, Yuuichi Tachibana (his boss) told him that the fastest driver in Akina is a man driving a Hachi Roku and owns a Tofu shop. Iketani then finds out that it's Bunta Fujiwara, Takumi's father. One night, Iketani was driving on Akina to improve his driving skills for his match against the Red Suns, but he got into a huge accident and was put in a neck brace. He then calls Bunta, asking if he can drive for him. Bunta said it's a 50/50 chance that he can make it. Race Night. The Red Suns were waiting. Keisuke was ready to race against his opponent. IF he shows up that is. Then the Truneo AE86 showed up. But to the shock of everyone, Takumi steps out of the car. The Speed Stars were afraid because Takumi didn't know a thing about cars. He then said that he beat RX-7 Type-R before. That's when Iketani realises that it wasn't Bunta that was the fastest on Akina. It was Takumi! I won't spoil the race but I will tell how Takumi started to drift. When he was 13, he was delivering Tofu to a hotel on top of Akina Mountain late at night. Takumi hated the fact that he was losing sleep so he can deliver tofu. Bunta gave him a cup of water to put in the cupholder. He told Takumi, not to spill any of the water, or the Tofu will break. At first, Takumi was spilling a lot of water, but Bunta told him to "circle" the water, so Takumi did and started to drift. Then he was driving and drifting so fast so he can get home to sleep, NOT to improve his skills! That's it. Go buy the First Stage on DVD to find out more! Just becareful. Some places are selling copied versions of the DVD. Do not buy the copied versions unless you KNOW that your DVD player can play the copied versions (some can't!). ================================================= ==3. Arcade Stage and Special Stage Comparision== ================================================= The "Arcade Mode" from Special Stage is almost exactly like Initial D: Arcade Stage Version 2. But it is unknown if Sega Rosso tried to balance the cars again, or if the car rankings from Version 2(in this case, the Integra is the overall best car) applies to Special Stage. They have also got rid of "Challenge Bunta Fujiwara" mode. Graphically, Arcade Stage is much more superior due to the NAOMI 2 Hardware being much more powerful (and easier to program with) than the Playstation 2's hardware. So the anti-alaising to get rid of the jagged edges on the cars is basically non-existant. Sound wise, I've been hearing complaints of the engine noise being too loud and the music noise being too soft. It doesn't bother me that much though. There are no volume options for this, just the option to turn them on or off (which kind of sucks.) But Special Stage has a lot more music than Arcade Stage. Like at least 20 more songs! On the gameplay front, using the controller is a pain in the ass due to it being so sensitive. However if you get a steering wheel, it will play almost like Arcade Stage. Feature wise, Special Stage blows Arcade Stage out of the water! Special Stage has the Quest Mode (story mode) where you play as Takumi Fujiwara and relive all of his races from the anime and manga! Plus Special Stage includes the REAL MYOGI AND REAL USUI tracks, along with Shomaru Pass, Momoji Line, and Enna Pass! On the car balancing. SEGA Rosso FINALLY balanced the cars, so the Integra DC2 is no longer the best car in the game. ==================== ==4. The Main Menu== ==================== Arcade Mode (Legend of the Streets) Story Mode Time Attack Replays/Time Attack Records Car Information from Iketani Senpai Save/Load Options Someone tell me if it's right. ========================================== ==5. Arcade Mode (Legend of the Streets)== ========================================== This is almost exactly like Arcade Stage Version 2, but they got rid of the "Challenge Bunta Fujiwara" Mode. You now have two options at the beginning. The first one is "New Car". The second one is "Load Car." 5.1. Choosing Your Car ====================== You get to choose from a variety of cars from; Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi, Mazda, and Subaru. You can change the colour of your car with the shift knob. And after you select your car, you get to select the transmission (Automatic or Manual), then you get to choose from a "Parts Course", either an A Course, B Course, C Course, or sometimes a D Course. Some of the Courses in the game reflect on some of the characters from the anime. Example: Sprinter Truneo GT-APEX AE86, A Course = Takumi Fujiwara. Nissian Sileighty RPS13, A Course = Impact Blue. After you choose a course, you can win points by winning races, and after you get enough points you can get your car upgraded, but the upgrading is automatic, and you cannot choose what upgrade to get. Remember: After you select your car and transmission, then saved it to a card, your stuck with it forever. Here's a very important tip: AVOID AUTOMATIC! It's TokyoPop quality (crap)! Manual is a must because you need to control the gear shifting if you want to be fast. 5.2. The Name Screen ==================== A bunch of Japanese Kanji, Katakana, and English. You only have a maximum of 5 characters to put in your name. To choose English, select the option ABOVE the red Kanji (end). If you leave your name blank, you'll get an automatic kanji name. 5.3. The Tracks =============== You got your basic track difficulties here: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard. The tracks are based on those from the anime. You face your rivals here in story mode at day or night time, or race alone in Time Attack mode. Beware, sometimes you race on the track backwards against opponents! The rivals will be listed like this: Name - Rating Level - Car - Direction. 5.3.1. Myogi ============ Itsuki Takeuchi - 1/10 - Levin SR (AE85) - Left Takumi Fujiwara - 2/10 - Levin SR (AE85) - Right Shingo Shouji - 4/10 - Civic SiR II (EG6) - Right Takeshi Nakazato - 5/10 - Skyline GT-R (R32) - Left 5.3.2. Usui =========== Two People From Tokyo - 2/10 - Silvia spec-R (S15) - Left Nobuhiko Akiyama - 2/10 - Altezza RS-200 (SXE10) - Right Mako Satou & Sayuki - 6/10 - Sileighty (RPS13) - Left Tsukamoto - 7/10 - Cappuccino (EA11R) - Right 5.3.3. Akagi ============ Downhill: Now THIS is a fun track. There are plenty of straightaways with challenging turns so it's a good technical track to master before trying Akina. One of the best things about this track is that it's more wider than the other courses so the chance of you hitting the outside wall has decreased. Kyouko Iwase - 3/10 - RX-7 Type R (FD3S) - Uphill Kenta Nakamura - 4/10 - Silvia Q's (S14) - Downhill Keisuke Takahashi - 7/10 - RX-7 Type R (FD3S) - Uphill Ryosuke Takahashi - 8/10 - RX-7 Efini 3 (FC3S) - Downhill 5.3.4. Story Mode== ================= Here's a temporary list of the things you can unlock. You need at least a C ranking to unlock the new songs, and a B ranking to unlock the cars so Iketani can explain them in his own little mode thingy. Thanks goes to DragonNight for the information. I have made corrections of all sorts and added some things that I founded on my own to the list. Big thanks to Odie and Fujiwara AE86 for the "how to get all S Rank" thing. The Cars and Tuners== ========================== Note: All cars listed will follow this type of format. Car model (version) - Drivetrain - Gears - Aspiration (Turbo or Natural [NA]) Colours available Course (Character if possible) - List of Tuners Parts that you can get are here. Drivetrains: FR = Front engine, rear wheel drive MR = Mid engine, rear wheel drive FF = Front engine, front wheel drive 4WD = Four Wheel Drive/All Wheel Drive Each Parts Course makes the car look different and increase your performance. The differences between the courses is in the parts you get and HOW it affects your car's attributes (like acceleration, top speed, handling, etc.) The A Course would give you a rear wing and a carbon fibre hood, while a B Course would give you a new hood and a rear spoiler. Also. The A course could have the best acceleration while the B course could have better handling. It's a big trade off for some, so please choose wisely! The benefits from the performance parts: Wheels improve traction. Spoilers/body kits/skirts/wings improve your handling in corners, and mufflers improve your speed and acceleration. Further more, even though the game in unrealistic, it simulates the drive trains well. The Front Wheel Drive has understeer and makes it hard to handle in some corners. However understeer is eliminated through left foot braking techniques. Most cheap production cars like the Honda Civic use this drivetrain because it's practical for regular everyday all season driving. Rear Wheel Drive is mostly used in sports cars and the car turns easier with RWD. However in some cars this may also lead to oversteer and spinning out if you put in too much steering input. RWD is horrible to use in the snow and mud. Mid Engine Rear Wheel Drive cars has the engine in the back of the car, which will help relieve it of understeer in some rear wheel cars. However, in some cars, this may lead to too much oversteer (especially in the MR2). All open wheel race cars (i.e. Formula 1) are mid engine rear wheel drive cars. Four Wheel Drive/All Wheel Drive cars have amazing traction and suck the ground like a vacuum cleaner. A 4WD car is a great investment especially for mud and snow driving. However 4WD cars have bad cornering ability. But in the latest 4WD/AWD systems, doesn't seem to have that problem. And besides, proper tuning and driving technique will get rid of that drawback completely (especially with 4WD drift!) Nearly rally car in the world these days uses 4WD. If there is serious flaw in 4WD, it has to be that you shouldn't be using 4WD in trucks unless you are going off terrain. 4WD + Truck (with it's high centre of gravity) = Truck rolling. So only use 4WD in a truck when you are going off terrain driving. The main difference between 6 gear and 5 gear cars is that the 6 gear cars have a much better start (can someone fill me in on this?) As for the Turbo vs. NA cars. Some turbo tuned cars suffer from "turbo lag". Turbo lag is when you push on the pedal and it takes 2 seconds for the car to accelerate. Turbo cars are great on straightaways and on the exit of a corner. Some turbo cars are hard to handle if you can't cope with the lag. Especially in the rain. NA tuned cars gives you an instant responce once you step on the pedal. So the the cornering enterance speed is much better than a turbo car. To put it in more simple terms: NA cars for twisty courses where the horsepower difference isin't as sevre (like Monaco in Formula 1.) Turbo cars for high speed circuits like the Indy 500 oval and the OLD Hockenheimring. But the new ball bearing turbos seem to have cured the turbo lag problem completely! Let me clarify something: In Version 2 most of the characters from the anime/manga will occupy Parts Course A (I.E. Takumi Fujiwara Parts Course A for the Trueno AE86) and they might have a special tune like a new engine, turbo kit, supercharger, or something like that. You can only get the special tunes like the engine if you get Parts Course A. Here's a example. If you get an A Course Lancer Evolution III you will get the misfiring system. If you get a B Course Lancer Evolution, you'll never get the misfiring system. So I STRONGLY advise you to get Parts Courses which are used by the characters. Oh and I must stress this: If you get the misfiring system for the Lancer Evolution III, DO NOT CHANGE THE MUFFLER or you will LOSE THE MISFIRING SYSTEM UNTIL YOU CHANGE COURSES! Plus the headlights are so damn ugly. Other than that the 6 gears can make it confusing on a really twisty course like Happougahara. If you want to drive this car, I have a suggestion: Use the B Course. The other two courses are too ugly and the B Course makes it look more like the World Rally Championship car. Codes, Secrets, and Tips== ================================ Getting Bunta's Subaru Impreza WRX STi Version V. Okay, the code from Arcade Stage Version 2 doesn't work. But from what I read from the GameFAQs message boards. To unlock it, you must beat Bunta in Story Mode with at least a B ranking. ==================================== ==12. Steering Wheel Compatability== ==================================== A steering wheel is a must for the game. I want people out there who tested out different wheels on the game to please e-mail me. Please note that all PC steering wheels connect through the USB Ports. Try the top and bottom ones, because on a rare occasion, some games only work with the bottom USB port. 12.1. Logitech =============== Logitech/Logicool Initial D: Special Stage GT Force - This is the wheel that was released with Initial D: Special Stage and it has cool artwork on the box! Of course, this wheel has been tested vigorously at SEGA and SEGA recommends it, so obviously, this wheel works great for Initial D. Logitech/Logicool Gran Turismo 3 GT Force - This wheel was released when Gran Turismo 3 was originally released and the only problem with the wheel was the steering lock up in GT3. It's very simular to the Initial D GT Force so it should work fine. This wheel is discontinued. Logitech Driving Force - The steering wheel released in North America, intended for Playstation 2 use was filled with bugs in Gran Turismo 3. Mainly the 75% braking and shifting will full turning lock. Unfortunatley, neophsychohalo reported shifting with the paddles is awful (so he used the D-Pad.) Also, while you are playing, the steering wheel will screw up completely and suddenly you will snap steer left or right, sending you into the wall. You would need to restart the game after that. Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP (PC) - This is the newer Formula Force. You can tell by the look of the steering whell and the "GP" on the box. It resembles the GT Force wheels but it is red. stipl said he can play the game with this wheel and so far, there are no glitches reported. Logitech MOMO Force (PC) - This PC steering wheel was the first MOMO ever released by Logitech. Regarded as one of the best wheels of all time since it was very high quality and had excellent force feedback, and it's button layout was modelled after Michael Schumacher's button layout in his 2000 Formula 1 Championship Winning Ferrari. This was the best steering wheel to use for Gran Turismo 3. I have personally tested out the wheel myself and it works perfectly. Such a beautiful wheel to use for this game. It's one of the world's best steering wheels to use for the PS2 or PC. Unfortunately, this wheel is discontinued. Logitech MOMO Racing (PC) - The newest MOMO and it comes with a stick shift! This wheel was uncompatable with Gran Turismo 3. It DOES NOT work with Initial D: Special Stage. It's quite a shame. It seems to be compatable with only very few PS2 games and the ones that work with it usually sucks. Thanks for e-mailing me Dennis! 12.2. Mad Catz =============== Mad Catz Universal Wheel/Mad Catz Universal Wheel MC2 - Essentially the same wheel, but I don't know the difference between them. This wheel has leg supports which can wrap around your legs while playing the game. It works simular to the lap attchement in the Logitech driving force. Another plus is a stick shift for the game that actually works, so it will feel more like the Arcade version. It also features something konwn as "Accudrive" which lets you adjust the deadzone and maximum turning range. You can even also map out the buttons! Unfortunatley you'll have to recalibrate the wheel with the accudrive everytime you START A RACE. Since the wheel has a fetish of resetting itself all the time. Thanks to Kaiser Joel, Ben, and Da12kcyde for telling me about this wheel! 12.3. Thrustmaster =================== Thrustmaster Ferrari Force Feedback (PC) - This wheel was compatable with Gran Turismo 3 and it had a stick shift. Compatability with Initial D: Special Stage is unknown. Thrustmaster Ferrari 360 Modena (PC) - Read above. No stick shift. Thrustmaster F1 Force Feedback Racing Wheel (PC) - Designed after the steering wheel used by the Ferrari Formula 1 Racing team, this wheel was reported compatable with Gran Turismo 3. Not sure about Special Stage Compatability. Thrustmaster Ferrari Force Feedback GT (PC) - The newer Ferrari Force Feedback wheel has been reported as compatable with Gran Turismo 3. DOES NOT WORK with Special Stage. Thanks Sniper! Thrustmaster Ferrari 360 Modena Pro (PC) - The newer 360 Modena wheel. Includes a stick shift. Compatability with Gran Turismo 3 and Special Stage is unknown. ================================== ==13. Frequently Asked Questions== ================================== Q: I can't finish the Myogi track! What's wrong? A: Your probably braking at every turn. You DO NOT do that in the game. Only on the really sharp turns I think. Go to the message boards for help. Q: What are the fastest cars in the game? A: Each course has their own fastest cars now. I will list them later. Q: Any bugs in the game? A: There is also the "Misfiring system" bug. Once you get the misfiring system but decide to change your muffler, you'll lose it until you change the parts course in card renewal. I don't know if this applies to Special Stage or not (the changing the muffler part.) Q: What the hell possessed you to write a Guide/FAQ for this game? A: I played the game and I figured out I might as well write a Guide/FAQ because no one has yet. ============= ==14.
