This Guide (C)2001 John Ricciardi. All Rights Reserved. Welcome to my Minna no Golf 3 translation guide. For those of you who are unaware, Minna no Golf is Japan's version of America's popular Hot Shots Golf series. The series is also known as "Everybody's Golf" in Japan (the literal translation of Minna no Golf is Everybody's Golf). Minna no Golf 3 will be released later this year in America as Hot Shots Golf 3, but not before undergoing a number of changes, I'm sure (the first two games got quite a workover before reaching the U.S., mostly in the form of new and/or different characters). The purpose of this guide is simple: to help importers make their way around the various menus and modes of SCEI and Clap Hanz' latest classic. The way I see it, the more people who can play the game without the frustrations of not being able to understand what's going on, the better. Please note: This is NOT a strategy guide, so please don't e-mail me asking for tips, hints, or anything else like that, because I won't be replying to any such requests. However, if you notice any mistakes, or have any useful additions, feel free to drop me a line. The previously announced Halloween Cup and Matsutake Championship are gone from the schedule, so chances are they're either delayed or cancelled. Version 1.7: Do you really even read this part? If so, take a wild guess what's new this time. :-) Version 1.6: Autumn is here, and with it, two new National Convention Passwords. Version 1.5: Added the latest National Convention Password. Version 1.4: Added another National Convention Password. This one is a biggie, with actual prizes and stuff. It only lasts for four days, so you'd better check it out soon! Version 1.3: Good update this time! The Shop Guide is now complete (woo!), save for one item that I'm having difficulty translating (野次の素). Also, there are two brand new National Convention Passwords in the Known National Convention Passwords section (14.1), so you Internet Ranking freaks can get your groove on. Version 1.2: Updated the Convention Mode and National Convention Mode sections. Added four new sections: Clubs and Balls, Shop Guide, Convention Mode Guide and National Convention Mode Guide. The Shop Guide is incomplete, as I still need to buy a bunch of stuff. I'll update it accordingly. Version 1.1: Updated the Options section and the Characters, Caddies and Courses section, and fixed a bunch of small errors. Version 1.0: First version. Still need to mess with the Convention and National Convention modes, and open up the remaining Characters, Caddies and Options (and whatever else). ===================================================================== 1.0 - GETTING STARTED At any time during the opening intro, press START to get to the title screen. There you will be presented with the following options: はじめから(プレイデータを作ります) New Game (Create Play Data) つづきからあそぶ Continue Play 1.1 - NEW GAME First-timers will obviously want to choose New Game. This will take you to the following screen: プレイデータを作る Create Play Data Here, choose an empty slot, name your Play Data (for example, "JOHN") and select "OK" from the input screen. It will then say: これでよろしいですか? Is this okay? はい いいえ Yes No Choose Yes. It will then say: ここにセーブします。 よろしいおですか? Save here. Okay? はい いいえ Yes No Choose Yes to begin. You will be taken to the Main Menu. 1.2 - CONTINUE PLAY If you want to continue your game, choose Continue Play from the main menu. This will take you to the following screen: ロード Load Choose your file and press the CIRCLE button. It will then say: このプレイデータではじめます。 よろしいおですか? Start with this Play Data. Okay? はい いいえ Yes No Choose Yes to begin. You will be taken to the Main Menu. ===================================================================== 2.0 - MAIN MENU There are six choices on the main menu. Each choice will be explained in its respective section (see below). They are (from left to right, top to bottom): ひとりでGOLF One-Player ("Solo") Golf みんなでGOLF Multi-player ("Everybody") Golf ミニゲーム Mini Game データ Data コンティニュー Continue オプション Options ===================================================================== 3.0 - ONE-PLAYER ("SOLO") GOLF Choosing this will take you to the One-Player menu. There, you will find five choices. Each choice will be explained in its respective section (see below). They are (from left to right, top to bottom): ストローク Stroke 大会モード Convention Mode VSモード Versus Mode トレーニング Training 全国大会モード National Convention Mode 3.1 - STROKE Basic stroke play. The player with the lowest number of strokes wins. Choose a character (see 5.2 - CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN), choose a course (see 5.3 - COURSE SELECT SCREEN), and begin. 3.2 - CONVENTION MODE The Convention Mode is the real "meat" of Minna no Golf 3. It consists of seven classes, each of which has four conventions (tournaments) to play through (one for each season - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter). In order to advance through the classes, you must increase your rank by winning conventions. The better you place in a convention, the more experience points you will gain, which go directly toward increasing your rank. In addition, winning a convention will net you both a trophy and a prize (the prize differs for each individual convention). For a complete list of conventions and prizes, see section 13.0 - CONVENTION GUIDE. 3.3 - VERSUS MODE Versus Mode is you vs. a computer opponent in one-on-one Match Play. Choose a character (see 5.2 - CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN), choose an opponent (if you can't figure this part out, you probably shouldn't be playing), and choose a course (see 5.3 - COURSE SELECT SCREEN) to begin. There are 12 CPU characters to go against, each of which becomes a selectable character once you defeat them. To win, you must be "Up" (ahead) at the end of the 18th hole. (You can also win via Called Game by being "Up" by four holes at any time during a match.) If the match is tied after 18 holes, you will enter Sudden Death mode, where you go one hole at a time until someone comes out on top. 3.4 - TRAINING Your basic training mode. Use this to practice your shots, practice certain holes, etc. Choose a character (see 5.2 - CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN) and then choose a course (see 5.3 - COURSE SELECT SCREEN) to begin. When you start, the Training Mode menu will appear. It reads as follows: トレーニングモード Training Mode コース Course Use this to choose which course you'd like to train on. ホール Hole Use this to choose which hole from the above course that you'd like to train on. 季節 Season Use this to choose the Season. For your reference, they are: 春 (Spring), 夏 (Summer), 秋 (Autumn), 冬 (Winter). ティー Tee Use this to choose your Tee. All I have so far is レギュラー (Regular). ラウンドスタート Round Start When you're ready to begin, choose this. メニューへ戻る Go Back to Menu Choose this to return to the main menu. 3.5 - NATIONAL CONVENTION MODE National Convention Mode is basically an Internet Ranking mode that allows you to participate in special exclusive conventions and then post your scores on the official Minna no Golf 3 web site. If you can't read Japanese, participating in this will be somewhat of a headache. For more information, see 14.0 - NATIONAL CONVENTION MODE GUIDE. ===================================================================== 4.0 - MULTI-PLAYER ("EVERYBODY") GOLF Choosing this will take you to the Multi-Player menu. There, you will find two choices. Each choice will be explained in its respective section (see below). They are (from left to right): ストローク Stroke マッチプレイ Match Play 4.1 - STROKE Basic stroke play for up to four players. This mode supports the PS2 Multitap, but if you don't have one, you can still play by sharing controllers. As usual, the player with the lowest number of strokes wins. First set up your players (see 5.1 - PLAYER SELECT SCREEN), then choose your characters (see 5.2 - CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN), and finally, choose a course to play on (see 5.3 - COURSE SELECT SCREEN). 4.2 - MATCH PLAY This mode is for two-player head-to-head Match Play. The player with the most holes won at the end of the match wins. If the event of a draw, you will enter Sudden Death mode, where you go one hole at a time until someone comes out ahead. First set up your players (see 5.1 - PLAYER SELECT SCREEN), then choose your characters (see 5.2 - CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN), and finally, choose a course to play on (see 5.3 - COURSE SELECT SCREEN). ===================================================================== 5.0 - SELECT SCREENS These important screens pertain to several game modes, so I decided to stick them in their own little section. 5.1 - PLAYER SELECT SCREEN In any multi-player modes, you will be taken to the Player Select screen to set up your players. It looks like this: プレイヤーセレクト Player Select Depending on the mode you're playing, there will be either two or four player slots. Press RIGHT or LEFT on the d-pad to move between the slots, and press UP and DOWN to choose between user-controlled players (プレイヤー) and computer-controlled players (コンピュータ). If you press DOWN twice, you'll see an extra line in orange under COM that says 〜最強版〜. This means "Strongest Type," and infers that the CPU player will be particularly good. 5.2 - CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN The Character Select screen is used to choose the character you wish to play as. In the beginning, only three characters are available, but as you defeat opponents in the Versus Mode, new characters will become available for play. There are 15 characters in all (see 10.0 - CHARACTERS, CADDIES & COURSES). The screen looks like this: キャラクターセレクト Character Select The select process is pretty simple. Choose a character, and press CIRCLE to confirm. While highlighting a character, press SELECT to change their outfit, and press TRIANGLE to view the character model on-screen. L1 and R1 are used to switch Clubs, and L2 and R2 are used to switch Balls. Note: In the beginning, the only Clubs available are ビギナーズ (Beginner's) and スタンダード (Standard). The only Balls available are スタンダード (Standard). 5.3 - COURSE SELECT SCREEN The Course Select screen is used to choose a course and course settings. It looks like this: コースセレクト Course Select Depending on the mode you are in, some of the Course Select options may or may not be available. The big screen that looks like a photo reel is the Course Select window. Use it to choose from any of the main courses, or in some cases, the Short ("S") course. Immediately under that, to the left, is the ホール勝負 (# of Holes) option. When possible, use L1 and L2 to switch between 3, 6, 9 and 18 Holes. Immediately to the right of the # of Holes option is the Season Select option. Use R1 and R2 to choose a season. Again, for your reference, the seasons are: 春 (Spring), 夏 (Summer), 秋 (Autumn), 冬 (Winter). Directly below Season Select is ラウンド設定 (Round Settings). Here, you can set various options depending on the mode you are in, such as Handicap (ハンデ), Caddie Select (キャディ) and more. ===================================================================== 6.0 - MINI GAME A basic game of Stroke Play on short holes (all Par 3) for one to four players. It takes place on a special "Short" course, and the maximum number of holes you can play is 9. First set up your players (see 5.1 - PLAYER SELECT SCREEN), then choose your characters (see 5.2 - CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN), and finally, choose course details (see 5.3 - COURSE SELECT SCREEN). ===================================================================== 7.0 - DATA Select this to view all sorts of stats and other misc. data. You can also use this to get to the Shop. Upon choosing it, you will find six choices. They are (from left to right, top to bottom): ステータス Status Use this to view your player's status, including your rank, total points, characters unlocked, best scores on each course, and a host of other interesting statistics. VTR再生 VTR Play This will let you view your greatest moments (eagles, hole-in-ones, etc.), which the CPU so graciously records for you. It even remembers the date of the occurence, which is actually pretty cool. ショップ Shop Choose this to enter the Shop, where you can purchase a wide variety of items and extras using the Points you've earned during play. 持ち物 Belongings Choose this to check out your various belongings. There are three types you can choose from. They are (from left to right, top to bottom): クラブ&ボール Clubs & Balls Check out all the Clubs and Balls you've acquired so far. アイテム Items Check out all the Items that are currently in your possession. トロフィー Trophies Check out all the Trophies you've won so far. プロファイル Profiles Choose this to check out character profiles for each of the Characters and Caddies you've opened up so far. ヒストリー History This choice is darkened out at the beginning of the game. You need to obtain a certain Item in order to open it up. ===================================================================== 8.0 - CONTINUE Choose this to continue a previously-saved game in progress. Pretty simple. ===================================================================== 9.0 - OPTIONS Choose this to access the game options menu. Within, you will find the following choices: BGM Background Music Turn background music ON or OFF. OKパット OK Putt When this feature is turned ON, the computer will automatically sink a putt for you if you are over Par and your shot lands within 1m of the cup. If you are under Par, however, you will have to make the shot yourself. 簡易キャラセレクト Easy Character Select Turning this ON simplifies the Character Select screen during multi-player games, allowing you to compare opposing player stats more easily. ヘッドスピード計 HeadSpeed Meter When this feature is turned ON, a small gauge will appear after every tee shot, displaying the shot's headspeed. キャディ Caddie Use this to choose which Caddie will be the default Caddie during play. The first choice is ランダム (Random), followed by each of the Caddies that you've unlocked so far. キャディカラー Caddie Color Use this to choose the color of your Caddie's costume. The first choice is ランダム (Random), followed by each of the available color choices. メニューキャラ Menu Character Use this to choose which character will be the default character to appear throughout the game's menu screens. The first choice is ランダム (Random), followed by each of the golfers that you've unlocked so far. メニュー壁紙 Menu Wallpaper Use this to choose which wallpaper scene will appear behind each of the game's menus. The first choice is ランダム (Random), followed by each of the wallpapers that you've unlocked so far. ミュージックモード Music Mode Use this to listen to any of the game's music tracks. ロード中メッセージを見る View Loading Messages Use this to view the different loading messages that have appeared thus far in your game. They contain hints and tips that can be very useful during play. Of course, they're all in Japanese, which isn't very helpful, now is it? ムービーシアター Movie Theater Use this to view any of the game's CG movie scenes that you've opened up thus far. ディボットのクリア Divot Clear This will clear all divots (patches of grass or turf kicked up from swinging a golf club) from all courses. Believe it or not, the game actually saves that information, which, if you think about it, is pretty darn cool. メモリーカード(PS2)からロード Load from Memory Card (PS2) Choose this to load a previously saved file from your Memory Card. メモリーカード(PS2)にセーブ Save to Memory Card (PS2) Choose this to save your current data to a Memory Card. ===================================================================== 10.0 - CHARACTERS, CADDIES AND COURSES Minna no Golf 3 features a wide variety of characters and caddies, and an average number of courses (I was hoping for more, to be honest). Each has different characteristics which will affect your player's stats. Keep an eye on your stats at the Character Select Screen when changing clubs or balls to determine how they will be affected. 11.1 - CLUBS 1. (Infinity) ===================================================================== 12.0 - SHOP GUIDE The Shop contains a myriad of useful and not-so-useful items for you to purchase using the Points you've accumulated during play. Not everything is available for sale from the beginning, however. You'll have to progress in the game in order to get new items to open up. There are two ways to get to the Shop: 1) After a match, you'll be asked if you wish to save. Choose yes or no, and then when you're finished, you'll be asked if you'd like to enter the Shop. 2) From the Main Menu, choose データ (Data). Then, from within the Data Menu, choose ショップ (Shop). The Shop is four screens wide. You move between the screens using the L1 and R1 buttons. The first pair of screens (to the left) make up the Convention Item Corner, which is basically a selection of items that you can also obtain by winning in the Convention Mode. The second pair of screens (to the right) is the regular Shop area, which contains a bunch of items that can't be had anywhere else. The following is a list of all the items that you can purchase in the shop. Obviously, this list contains SPOILERS, so read it at your own risk. It's best used as a guide for translating the names of the items you've already purchased. (After all, this IS a translation guide, remember?) Note: The order of items goes from TOP to BOTTOM, then LEFT to RIGHT. If you want to try it, you can do so by following these steps. PLEASE NOTE: This is a bit of a complicated process. If you have problems getting this to work, do not e-mail me about it. I'm only explaining how it works, I'm not here to provide 24/7 customer service. Sorry. ^_^ Step 1: Go to the official Minna no Golf 3 web site (found at http://www.mingol.net) and create an account. Click the little icon that says SIGN UP on the graphic. Step 2: Scroll to the bottom and you'll see two empty bars. This is For you to enter your e-mail address. Enter it in BOTH bars, and then press the red button to the right ("Accept"). (There's another red button up above -- ignore it, unless you can read Japanese. It's just an alternate way of signing up.) Step 3: Wait for an e-mail from mingol.net. When you get it, click on the link in the body of the e-mail message (or paste it into your browser - whatever tickles your fancy). You will be taken to the next page in the sign-up process. Once there, click on the red button. Step 4: Now, you'll be at the final sign-up page. You must fill in all the blanks here underneath your e-mail address (your e-mail address is your mingol.net login ID, so um, don't forget it). The blanks are (from top to bottom): Password - Choose a password. Must be eight characters or more. Password - Enter your password again for confirmation. Nickname - This will be the name that shows up if you manage to make it into any of the standings. Postal Code - Enter your zip code. Surprisingly, American zip codes seem to work. Age - The five choices in this pull-down are: Under 10 10's 20's 30's Over 40 Occupation - Pick whatever you want. If you're really anal about making stuff up, pick the bottom one ("Other"). Blood Type - You've got one, so you may as well tell them what it is. The choices are (obviously) A, B, O or AB. Sex - The first choice is Male. The second choice is Female. Finally, there's a little check box. If you do NOT want to receive information from mingol.net about special promotions and things (in Japanese, of course), then CHECK THE BOX. Otherwise, leave it alone and prepare to be spammed. Click the red button at the bottom to continue. You'll be taken to a confirmation page with all of the information you just entered. If it looks okay, press the red button. If not, press the blue button and try again. Once confirmed, you should be all set. Press the button that appears on the next page (it says "Top") and you'll be sent to the main page of mingol.net. Step 5: Now, scroll down to the 大会情報 (Tour Information) box on the main page. Inside this box, at the top, you'll see little white boxes with red and yellow text. These are the conventions that are going on or have already finished. Click on one to see if it is still going on. If so, when you get to its page, there will be a pair of links right above the current rankings with a graphic of a little hand and blue text that says: パスワードを申請! (Input Password!) 大会参加パスワードをGET! (Get Convention Password!) Both take you to the same page. (Note: If the convention is already over, the password links won't be there.) Step 6: At this page, you'll see a 12-character password (all in Japanese). Write it down. Step 7: In your game, select 全国大会モード (National Convention Mode) from the ひとりでGOLF (One-Player Golf) menu. Press CIRCLE and you will come to a password screen. Enter the password you just wrote down and you can enter the special convention. Step 8: When your game is over, you'll receive a new password. Take It back to this same page and enter it in the empty box and then press the yellow button (it says "Input"). Now your score will be entered into the rankings. Don't be surprised if you never see it, though - the Japanese players I've seen so far are pretty hardcore, with scores of like -22 and -24 being the norm in these conventions. It makes beating them pretty much next to impossible, unless you attempt to cheat, or you're a robot or something. 14.1 - KNOWN NATIONAL CONVENTION PASSWORDS Here are the passwords I've seen so far.
