Insert the Growlanser: Heritage of War disc with the label side facing up. Attach game controllers and other peripherals as appropriate, and then wait for the game to load in your T.V. screen. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [STARTING THE GAME] ST01 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ----- START ----- From the title screen, you will be able to either Start a new game or Load a saved game. After you have completed the game, the Appendix option will become available. ----------- SAVING DATA ----------- You will be able to save your game at Inns, Save Points and at certain events and locations in the game. To save, please make sure there is a memory card in MEMORY CARD slot 1 of your Playstation 2 system and select "Save." Once the Save screen appears, select the file you would like to save to and press the X button to confirm. In order to save, you will need 109 KB of free space on the memory card. ------------ LOADING DATA ------------ To load a game, you must have previously saved Growlanser: Heritage of War data on the memory card in MEMORY CARD slot 1. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [FIELD] ST02 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Everything moves in real time on the field screen, and there is no transition from exploration into battle. ------------------------------- FIELDS THAT EXPAND IN REAL TIME ------------------------------- During the game, you will go about your adventure by moving across fields, where you will find various wandering enemies. In certain circumstances, monsters may also appear in towns and cities. -------------------------------- FLOW OF TIME ON THE FIELD SCREEN -------------------------------- Normally, events move in real time on the field screen, so you must take care when making selections or issuing commands in battle. To freeze time, open the Command Menu or use the right analog stick to scroll around the map. ------------- TARGET MARKER ------------- If you approach another character or an enemy on the field, a "target marker" will appear above its head. If it's an enemy, the marker will be red, meaning you can attack it. If it's an NPC or an item, the marker will be green, you can press the X button to interact with it. If there are multiple characters or items on the field, you can cycle between them using L1 and R1 buttons. If you are too far to speak or check the target, the marker will not blink. -------------------- ENCOUNTERING ENEMIES -------------------- By drawing near to enemies on the field, you will engage in the battle with them. Since the enemies are visible on the field, you may be able to avoid the battle by moving carefully around them. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [TOWN FACILITIES] ST03 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Towns, villages, and castles are home to both private residences and businesses such as inns or shops. In some circumstances, battles may also take place within towns. ----- HOMES ----- If you press the X button in front of someone's door, you will be able to talk to the people inside. They may give you important information, so listen to what they say. Some buildings can also be entered. ---- INNS ---- You can save your progress at inns or rest to recover HP and MP. There are also certain abilities called Knacks that have a limited number of uses until you rest at an inn. Select inns are also host to Fairy Contests that Korin can compete in. For more information about the Fairy Contest, refer to the Side Quests section of this guide. ----- SHOPS ----- Here, you can buy or sell weapons, armor, goods, and accessories. Weapons and armor will increase a character's attack and defense power, in addition to generating Plates. Goods are consumable items that can heal or assist your party, and accessories are used to boost your characters' abilities. To buy something, select the item, and choose whether you would like to "Buy & Equip" or simply "Buy." If you choose "Buy & Equip," select a character to give the item to by pressing the L1 and R1 buttons, then confirm with the X button. Certain equipment wil have STR requirements to be used; if not met, that equipment will be detrimental to the character's stats. While using weapons a character is unable to properly handle, his or her ATW (Attack Wait) will be increased, and armor that is too heavy for a character will lower his or her MOV (Movement). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [BATTLE] ST04 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- During battles, take control of the main character and issue commands to your allies. --------------- FIGHT AS A UNIT --------------- Though you control the main character directly, party members will move on their own. You cannot directly control them, but you can direct their movements and actions through the Command Menu. --------------- TYPES OF BATTLE --------------- There are two types of battles: normal encounters on the fields, and Mission Battles that occur as part of the storyline. a. Normal Encounters - enemies wander the fields, and you can choose to fight or avoid them. Since they are optional, there is no Results screen at the close of a normal encounter. Defeating enemies earns experience points, money, and Knack Points. Knack Points are awarded only to the character who finishes off an enemy. b. Mission Battles - these event battles occur as part of the storyline, and have specific conditions for victory that can be found in the System menu. After the battle, the Results screen will appear, and you will receive Clear Bonuses based on your performance. ------------------ ENGAGING IN BATTLE ------------------ When you encounter enemies on the field screen, you will go into battle mode if you attack the enemy or the enemy notices you. Party members will go into AUTO mode and act automatically until you give them specific orders. -------------------- ACTION DURING BATTLE -------------------- Battle occur in real time. After a character completes an action, the yellow ATW gauge appears onscreen. Another action can be selected before this gauge reaches 0, but it will not occur until the gauge runs out. When you select a spell, a green CT (Charge Time) gauge appears, and the spell may release once it reaches 0. Spell levels will be automatically adjusted to the character's skill/spell level. The higher the spell level is, the longer it will take to cast. --------------------------- SELECTING CHARACTER ACTIONS --------------------------- You have direct control over the main character during battles, and can launch attacks by pressing X button once an enemy has been targeted. Other party members will begin the battle in AUTO mode. To give them directions, enter the Command Menu. ------------ AFTER BATTLE ------------ In a Mission Battle, once the battle is over, you will see the Battle Results screen. By clearing a mission objectives, you will receive Clear Bonuses. If all party members are killed, or one of the Defeat Conditions is met, the game will end. ---------------- SELECT THE SPELL ---------------- To cast a spell, select the Spell command from the menu, then choose a spell from the list with the directional buttons, left analog stick, or with the L2 or R2 buttons. ------------- START CASTING ------------- Once you've chosen a spell, the character will begin casting. While the CT gauge is counting down, the caster will be defenseless, and take greater damage when attacked. To cancel a spell, open the menu by pressing the Triangle button and choose Cancel. Choosing Resume will keep casting the spell until it builds to a higher level. Once the gauge reaches 0 and the casting is complete, select Activate to release the spell, or Standing to release it later. ---------------- CASTING COMPLETE ---------------- Once the casting is complete and you activate the spell, select an enemy or ally to cast it on. If you choose to Standby, the character will remain ready to cast it until you press the Triangle button to open the menu and choose Activate. --------- GAME OVER --------- If all party members are killed during normal battles or mission battles, the game will be over. There will also be situations in Mission Battles where the game will end if the Defeat Conditions are met. ----------------- DOWNED CHARACTERS ----------------- If a character's HP drops to 0 during battle, that character will be down and be unable to participate. Characters may be revived with a Raise spell or the Nectar item. The character will automatically return once you leave the field, complete the battle, or allow enough time to pass. Characters will revive with only a small amount of health. If a character is not manually revived, his or her affinity toward the main character will greatly decrease. ----------- LEVELING UP ----------- Characters level up once they gain a certain amount of Experience Points, which will result in an overall stat increase. Gaining Knack Points will raise the level of your knacks, skills, and spells. The criteria for character growth will be displayed in the message window at the top of the screen Experience Points: EXP needed to level up a character. Knack Points: Points needed to level up equipped plates. Change Flow: There are 8 flows (paths) that can be created in the Ability Tree, but Knack Points will only be distributed into a selected flow. By changing the Active Flow, you can develop different Plates in other locations on the Tree. c. Plate Control: Some items allow you to change the direction of the arrow on a Plate, swap two Plates, or add KP to Plates. With these, you can control how Plates are connected, as well as their development. Knack Points (KP) that you gain during battle are divided amongst the different Plates within the active flow. Thus, the more Plates that are connected, the slower each of them will develop. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [ADDITIONAL NOTES] ST07 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ----------------------------------------------------- MISSION COMPLETE VS. MISSION CLEAR VS. MISSION FAILED ----------------------------------------------------- Mission Battles during the storyline will have set Victory and Defeat Conditions. If you can complete the Victory Conditions, you will clear the mission; failure to do so may result in a game over. Mission Battles have three levels of success: Mission Complete, Mission Clear, and Mission Failed. Achieving greater levels of success will earn greater rewards like more EXP, KP, and Mil. It also increases the Friend Rating with your characters slightly. For more information about the Friend Rating, refer to the Side Quests section of this guide. Please note that only in-game missions count toward Friend Rating. Side quest missions like the Colosseum and Melvina's weapon quest are not included. Example: [Mission 00] Victory Condition: At least 3 civilians survived Defeat Condition: Failed to save at least 3 civilians Mission Complete Condition: All civilians survived Mission Clear Condition: At least 3 civilians survived Mission Failed Condition: Failed to save at least 3 civilians ------- CHOICES ------- The game itself is loaded with choices, but I don't think they affect the story much. Just make sure to go for the positive ones and you'll be fine. The choices you made will affect the Friend Rating with your characters. If you don't know which ones to choose, I will provide them for you. You don't have to follow my choices if you don't want to. ------------- SUPPORT MAGIC ------------- Every time you start a mission or enter a dungeon, make sure that you ALWAYS cast support magic (Attack Up, Protect, Cycle Up). Support Magic can enhance your stats for a limited amount of time, but you can recast them again once they disappear. ======================================================================== --------------------------II. Have Seldous move to the supplies and he will automatically set fire on it. Make sure that enemies won’t get near the supplies because if you do, that enemy will put out the fire, and you have to kill that enemy to set the fire again. After a while, Seldous will comment that it is too late to put out the fire and you will be given another choice. Choice 03: steeds - Attack the enemy soldiers (choose) - Attack the steeds Let Seldous attacks the steeds because your soldiers will probably kill them. There is a total of 4 steeds in this area, two in the south and two in the east. Hit them once and they will flee. During this fight, Isaac and Vanette will join you. Have Vanette heal your soldiers while Isaac attacks the enemies. When the steeds have been driven off, Seldous will say that it’s time to escape. Make sure that your 5 soldiers escape safely. After they escaped, you can let Vanette, Isaac and Seldous escape as well. baka_angel's Strategy: Seldous 8th mission, the way I did it was by attacking the steeds on the southern slope first and wait for them to retreat (and helping the soldiers eliminate the enemies over there). Once all the steed retreated, Isaac and Vanette will appear one after another (I tested it twice). You don’t want to let that happen because it will become an endless killing. If they keep popping up, the conditions will change where you can attack the shutters in the northeast part of the screen to make an escape route. However, if you want to get a mission complete, you have to kill them all. Kyle Bissett's Strategy: Rockbein mission 3: Most of the enemies have red eyes (normal), but one has blue eyes (the leader). Whenever a normal enemy is killed, the leader will summon another one to take its place. Whenever the leader is killed, a randomly selected normal enemy becomes the new leader and summons another normal enemy to replace the leader who died. However, the new leader will not summon replacements for any normal enemies that died between the point when the old leader died and the new one appeared. As such, here is the strategy to win: Kill the blue-eyed robot. When it dies, kill as many red-eyed ones as possible until one becomes the new blue-eyed one. When that happens, kill that one immediately, then go back to killing the rest of them. Repeat as necessary. This will reduce the amount monster respawning. ************************************************************************ Watch the rest of the scenes. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [FANILLE'S ROLE START] PR04 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- --------------------- THE PMB HEADQUARTERS --------------------- Items Weapons - Vulnerary...... 8 Mil - Rod............... 10 Mil - Antidote Herb.. 5 Mil - Traveller's Cane.. 50 Mil - Machete........... 15 Mi - Falcata........... 45 Mil - Crossbow.......... 30 Mil - Heavy Crossbow.... 50 Mil Speak with the man in front of you, and leave your lab. (choose) - Use magic on the golem once and lure it away from the people until everyone escapes. - Defeat the golem - Cure the people - Escape while the golem attacks the people - Do nothing Trial ends and based on what you did, you will get a title. If you followed my choices, you will get the title “Great Savior”. You will obtain items such as: , , , and . The other 4 titles that you can possibly obtain are: Brave Warrior, Astute Fencer, Mighty Crusher, and Fierce Striker. LOSTONE from GAMEFAQs, Kyle Bissett, and Monozero10 have given me their own strategy on how to obtain the title Brave Warrior. LOSTONE's Strategy for Brave Warrior: Attack the insect, heal child. After lady asks for herb talk to all 3 merchants before buying 6g herb. Get delivery items for Amiee and Rasche. Go to Rasche first, deliver item and answer questions correctly. Go to beach to Amiee, deliver item and answer questions correctly. Leave beach, go back when scream, hit bug once (not sure if this matters)and leave to go get Rasche. Talk to Rasche, get the Vulenary, DON'T talk to him again, go back to beach. Kill bugs... make sure you kill at least one of them yourself (Final blow). Go with Amiee to Rasche. Kill at least 2 bugs yourself (bringing your total to 4). Enter village and stay south by Rasche/Amiee. Cast wind spell on ogre and lure him south. Step down and let Aimee and Rasche wail on him while you're out of range. Make sure you get a few hits in yourself, but try not to die. The ogre should block a few of the villagers for a while but they'll eventually escape. Use the rest of your magic on the ogre then hit him as much as you can, staying alive with herbs. You should be able to kill him if you're lucky and you'll get a studded leather armor as a reward. Killing the ogre is NOT required for Brave Warrior, but it gives you points towards it. The hardest thing to do that is necessary for Brave Warrior is getting 4 kills. That means getting the final blow yourself. If you manage that and do everything else right you MIGHT get it. I did the dream sequence about 12 times or so until I got it so there is a variable involved that I'm missing. Kyle Bisset's Strategy for Brave Warrior: Killed the monster in town by attacking. Caught the kid in the race (As quickly as possible) Bought and delivered the 6g medicine for the old lady Did not steal from the weapon shop or item shop Did not leave town until given a valid reason (Asked to deliver items to Aimee and/or Rasche) Delivered proper items to Aimee and Rasche Answered all questions in both quizzes correctly Helped Aimee by attacking the monsters on the beach Helped Aimee and Rasche by attacking the monsters near the town entrance Killed the giant Killing the giant is the tricky part. The reason I specified attacking all other monsters (As opposed to using magic to fight or heal) is that you'll need all the MP you can spare to pull this off. Open the fight with a Wind Edge. When the giant starts coming at you, hide behind Rasche. This way, while the giant is getting in range to attack you, he'll run into Rasche and Rasche will hit it. Once Rasche has landed one blow, get to the opposite corner of the map and fire another Wind Edge. Maintain your distance from the giant and keep hitting it with Wind Edges until you run out of MP. The combined effect of all the spells and Rasche's one hit should have taken the giant to critical condition. Attack the giant directly to finish him off. Remember to use a vulnary if your health reaches 20HP or below (You should have 2). When the fight ends, you'll get Heavy Clothes (from the giant), the Brave Warrior title, good stats in Strength, Intelligence and Dexterity, some items, and two spell plates. Monozero10's Strategy for Brave Warrior: Attack the monster and heal the kid. Race the child and catch him as fast as you can. Talk to the JuJu lady, talk to all the merchants and then buy the 6G one. Give her the Herb. Get the items for Aimee and Rasche. Go to Rasche, answer his questions correctly. Go back to town, go to the weapon, don't steal it, go to the herb, don't steal that one either. Go to Aimee, Answer her questions correctly. Walk back to town until you hear a scream, go back to Aimee, attack a monster then run away. Go talk to Rasche, get the Vulnerary Go back to aimee, wait until she does enough damage that you can kill the first mob in one hit, then attack it, the same for the other one. Go back to where Rasche was. Run south and attack the monster Rasche does after he hits it, and hope he doesn't get a crit. Run north wait til Aimee almost kills that monster, and get the last hit on that one. Wait until the 3rd monster gets almost into town, let it hit you and it will stay there, let aimee almost kill it and get the last hit on that one. Go into town, cast Wind Edge on the ogre and then wait until it Aimee and Rasche move, then hide where Rasche was, the ogre and the people should bunch up there. The ogre might kill a few People, but it didn't seem to hurt my rating, Aimee and Rasche can finish the ogre on thier own, but I usually attack him anyway. I used LOSTONE's strategy to figure this one out, so the credit is mostly his. You will get rewards such as , , , , and for getting the title "Brave Warrior".
