Guide's Information ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS IS NOT A WALKTHROUGH. I WILL NOT GIVE WALKTHROUGHS. First, I am already confused enough that I just bulldozed my way through the missions. Second, I do not have a PS2. I borrowed one from my friend and will have to give it back ASAP. Three, I will give enough pointers so that you will not be stuck in one chapter for months (like my friend who lent me the PS2). Numbers ending with 'a' is the explanation(s) for the section. i.i Background Information -------------------------- While playing this game, I realised that the lack FAQs to aid people who cannot speak/read Japanese. Even if they do know Japanese, they might be clueless to what the game have to offer. At the present time of writing, there is only one FAQ, written by Evil7. i.ii About the Kanjis -------------------- The kanjis are there to help you know who is who and which is which. You can print them out (as long as you don't sell them) and compare them to the text ingame. i.iii Searching for Topics ------------------------ The sections are divided into main topics and subtopics. For topics, the number does not consist a decimal point (eg. 14). For subtopics, the number have a decimal point (eg. 14.4) To search for a particular topic in Notepad/Internet Explorer, press Ctrl+F and input the topic's assigned number. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Introduction ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Third Year of Bunkyuu, 1863. It had been ten years since Commodore Perry set foot on Japan. The whole country is engaged in an invinsible civil war, as revolutionaries desperately try to end Shogun Tokugawa's rule while at the same time intending to restore the Emperor to the throne. 'Sonnou Joui', 'Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians' became the rallying cry for most of them. In these uncertain times, numerous samurais, both loyal and against the Bakufu became rounins; and converged at the capital of Japan at the time: Kyoto. Without any idea of what to do, money or food, most of these rounins became a threat to the civil populace. A special force is needed to curb the rounins, keeping the peace of Kyoto. Thus the Shinsengumi was established. Bought to you by the same people who created Kengo 2, it's Genki! Currently, there are no plans to translate the game into English. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Gameplay ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.1 Controls ------------ [When You Are Not In a Mission] ------------------------------- Circle - Confirm Your Actions X - Return to the previous menu. [Status - Dojo Menu] f. [Status - Stances Menu] g. [Status - Wanted Roshis Menu] 2.3 Playing for the First Time ------------------------------ 2.4 After You Have Finished The Game ------------------------------------ Versus Mode ----------- After you've beaten the game, you will find several new options. One of them is the Versus mode. It can only be played between two person (you cannot fight against the CPU). It pits red team against white team. There are several characters to choose from, including the Shinsengumi main members (Kondou, Hijikata etc), Yamanami Keisuke, Sakamoto Ryoma, Serizawa Kamo, Nakaoka Shintarou, Saigou Takamori, Ookubo Toshimichi and two more person that I don't know (maybe Katsura Kogorou and Takasugi Shinsaku? Or Yoshida Toshimaro?). Team moves are valid, though you are limited to 3 members per team. In case you are wondering, using a revolver is permitted. Starting A New Mission ---------------------- Starting a new mission from the same save game you have finished playing can be fun. Why? Well, you get to play as six from the Shinsengumi! They are Kondou, Hijikata, Okita, Harada, Nagakura and Saito. The scenes also are a little bit different... You need to play as Okita to get the last attack of the Tennen Rishin Ryuu, Okita's Thrust. -After you finished playing the game, the dog in the Status Menu have a Shinsengumi uniform! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. The Missions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.1 Mission Types ----------------- Normal Patrol Missions ---------------------- Most of the missions you go on consists of the normal patrol missions. On these missions, there are no objectives, just killing the ronins until they stopped respawning, or camping in an area where ronins spawn so you can get a huge stats boost from killing like, 100+ ronins in one mission. Special Missions/Story Missions ------------------------------- These missions are different from the regular patrols you go on. They are needed to advance the story and go to the next chapter. Therefore it is recommended that you watch the dialogues (pressing X all the way, unless you can read Japanese and want to read). If you see purple characters stamped on the scene after they have finished, a special mission will be available. The special mission will always be at the end of the map list. They also have a purple/blue/red stamp on top of the text of the briefing. Prepare yourselfs before special missions, because they MUST contain a boss fight. Or fights. You can choose to ignore the special mission and go on normal missions. However, the special mission will always wait for you, no matter how long. 3.2 Fighting Tips and Tricks ---------------------------- -Using a particular stance to kill (not injure/wound) a boss may result in getting +3 points for that particular stance. This is useful for stances that is hard to get points with (eg. battoujutsu). -Utilise formations to your advantage. Surrounding a hard boss and executing a team move will usually result in an easy kill. -While fighting with your back against the wall in real-life is good against multiple enemies,, doing that in-game will get you killed most of the time. -Be VERY patient in stealth mission. If you can't find anything even after you have walked/crawled your way all over the map, well, leave. -Train yourself to press Circle immediately after parrying a blow. Listen to the clash of swords! -In most missions, you need to do something to trigger the events. These includes killing a certain number of ronins, walking around alone, unsheathing your sword in front of a disguised ronin or by reaching a certain point on the map. -On stealth missions, you have three chances to mistakenly run. Use all three and you will be exposed. -Using a team move with a unit captain will usually result in the captain using his super technique, for example Okita's eight-piece-thrust. Send me your tips! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. At The Dojo ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- !> 4.1 Practice 4.2 Sparring 4.3 Managing Your Styles and Stances ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Meet the Crew ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.a Explanation --------------- Friendship: I really don't know what is this stat for. HP: Hitpoints... Arm Strength: How much that slash or thrust going to hurt the enemy. Leg Strength: How fast they move. Cost: How much fame points needed to get them to follow you for a mission. Sometimes it's free of charge. Styles and Stance: What sytle/stance they use. The third stance IS ALWAYS the battoujutsu stance. The values listed here are slightly inacurrate, as when I listed them down, I'm already in Chapter 8. If someone is willing to submit the stats at the beginning of the game, I will highly appreciate it. 5.1 Kondou Isami/近藤勇 ---------------- Friendship: 170 HP: 200 Arm Strength: 220 Leg Strength: 170 Cost: 70 Style and Stances: Tennen Rishin Ryuu: Side Tennen Rishin Ryuu: Middle 5.2 Hijikata Toshizou/土方歳三 --------------------- Friendship: 340 HP: 180 Arm Strength: 180 Leg Strength: 180 Cost: 60 Style and Stances: Tennen Rishin Ryuu: Middle Tennen Rishin Ryuu: Lower 5.3 Okita Souji/Soushi/沖田総司 ---------------------- Friendship: 160 HP: 150 Arm Strength: 150 Leg Strength: 200 Cost: 50 Style and Stances: Tennen Rishin Ryuu: Middle Tennen Rishin Ryuu: Upper 5.4 Saitou Hajime/斎藤一 ----------------- Friendship: 170 HP: 160 Arm Strength: 160 Leg Strength: 200 Cost: 48 Style and Stances: Onoha Itto Ryuu: Upper Onoha Itto Ryuu: Middle 5.5 Harada Sanosuke/原田佐之助 ------------------- Friendship: 210 HP: 200 Arm Strength: 180 Leg Strength: 150 Cost: 45 Style and Stances: Houzouin Style Other Ryuu: Lower 5.6 Nagakura Shinpachi/永倉新八 ---------------------- Friendship: 140 HP: 170 Arm Strength: 180 Leg Strength: 150 Cost: 42 Style and Stances: Shintou Munen Ryuu: Upper Shintou Munen Ryuu: Middle 5.7 Toudou Heisuke/藤堂平助 ------------------ Friendship: 240 HP: 150 Arm Strength: 150 Leg Strength: 150 Cost: 40 Style and Stances: Hokushin Ittou Ryuu: Lower Hokushin Ittou Ryuu: Side 5.8 Ogata Shuntarou/尾形俊太郎 ------------------- Friendship: 70 HP: 130 Arm Strength: 140 Leg Strength: 130 Cost: 28 Style and Stances: Other Ryuu: Upper Other Ryuu: Middle 5.9 Shimada Kai/島田魁 --------------- Friendship: 60 HP: 140 Arm Strength: 120 Leg Strength: 110 Cost: 26 Style and Stances: Other Ryuu: Side 5.10 Hayashi Nobutarou/林信太郎 ---------------------- Friendship: 70 HP: 130 Arm Strength: 120 Leg Strength: 130 Cost: 25 Style and Stances: Other Ryuu: Side 5.11 Saya Yasohachi*/山野八十八 ------------------- Friendship: 220 HP: 105 Arm Strength: 100 Leg Strength: 130 Cost: 22 Style and Stances: Other Ryuu: Lower Other Ryuu: Middle 5.12 Oishi Kuwajiro/大石鍬次郎 ------------------- Friendship: 330 HP: 120 Arm Strength: 120 Leg Strength: 130 Cost: 20 Style and Stances: Other Ryuu: Lower * I don't know the exact spelling of his name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. The Maps ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: For the maps, I'll be calling them with what I remember them with. For example, I assume the reader knows a map with the unslashable bamboos. It usually rains on that map. Often, you will see several man in black standing guard over a house's gate. They are considered as civillians (meaning if you kill them, you won't gain fame or trust points from the mission.) The reason I mentioned them here is so that you can identify the map. Reference to North, East, West, South etc. are made from the center of the map. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Map's Callsign: Sakura Temple Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: outdoor Information: This is the first map that you will play in the game. The path is V-shaped, pointing west. You will only play this map in spring (by looking at the cherry blossoms/sakura, it's spring). Starring Takeda Kanryuusai, 5th Unit Captain. Map's Callsign: Unslashable Bamboos Day/Night: Day, Raining Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: There's a path near the bamboos, and several small bridges. The map looks like a village. There are guards guarding the house to the west. You will often find important ronins in front of the house, with a few exceptions. Important rounins featured here are Ookubo Toshimichi and Saigou Takamori. Map's Callsign: Really Big Bridge Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: This map got the biggest bridge in the whole game! The map is two- levelled, with the lower level extending under the bridge itself. A revolver- packing rounin can be found here in secret mission for Chapter 3. Map's Callsign: Shinto Temple Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: The main temple complex is at the upper half of the map. The lower half consists of a straight road. There is an L-shaped road connecting to the main temple complex. You will start missions here either split or together. A story mission for chapter 3 will take place here. Map's Callsign: Two-storey Inn Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Indoor Information: This map also have the purpose of being the Ikeda-ya (Ikeda Inn) in chapter 3. On the earlier chapters, you will find that the ronins spawn infinitely on the second floor's biggest room, making it a good live killing grounds for you to train, get points, or brag to your friends ("Nobody killed X number of rounins other than me, buddy.") Map's Callsign: Single-storey Inn Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Indoor/Outdoor Information: You will start outdoors. There is a small store room south-west of the map. A number of stealth missions take place here. To avoid unnecessary ronins, enter the inn through the west part (you will find that the door/fusuma is already opened) and walk around until you find the trigger point (for story mission Chapter 2, the trigger point is at the North-West house). Map's Callsign: Geisha House Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Indoor Information: The map is two-storeyed. Some stealth missions and a story mission for Chapter two will took place here. There are four rooms on the second floor, and another room to the east for special guests (read: Important rounins) Map's Callsign: A Small Part of Town Day/Night: Day Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: There's a big road North of the map, scretching from east to west; and a guarded gate. The small bridge on the South leads to the exit. The narrow alleys may be used to your advantage. Your opponent can use it against you too. The map is filled with rounins in story mission for Chapter 5. Map's Callsign: Assasin's Heaven Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: Narrow and dark alleys. The map is located in a part of town at night. A guarded gate is to the Southwest. Several bridges and drains. This is where you need to group up with your team-mates before raiding Ikeda-ya in Chapter 3. Map's Callsign: The Long and Winding Road Day/Night: Day Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: This map is pretty linear. It's located inside a forest. The path is curved here and there. I cannot really say anything more because you'll know this map immediately. You'll pursue someone in story mission Chapter 5 here. Map's Callsign: Shimabara Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: Map's Callsign: Wolves' Lair Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: Map's Callsign: Abura-no-koji Day/Night: Night Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: Map's Callsign: Snow Temple Day/Night: Day/Snow Indoor/Outdoor: Outdoor Information: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9. A Short History ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here I put up a small history section so you will understand the events in the game. Murder of Serizawa Kamo ----------------------- Since Serizawa Kamo caused too much trouble in Kyoto, Matsudaira Katamori (who is the Daimyo (Lord) of Aizu, also the Millitary Commissioner of Kyoto) ordered him to be killed. But first, the Shinsengumi must get rid of Niimi Nishiki, a friend of Serizawa and also one of the three commanders of the Shinsengumi (the other two being Serizawa and Kondou). In the real history, Niimi committed seppuku. After the death of Niimi, the plan to murder Serizawa can proceed. At Yagi Gennojou's estate (the headquarters for the Shinsengumi before they moved to the temple) on September 16th, 1863, Serizawa Kamo is murdered along with Hirayama Gorou. Another member of Serizawa's group, Hirama Juusuke, managed to escape with his life. The murder took place in chapter 2. Ikeda-ya Incident ----------------- Based on information provided by the confessions of Furutaka Shuntarou/Masuya Kiemon, on the 5th of June, 1864, First Year of Genji, the Shinsengumi raided the Ikeda Inn. The Ishin Shishi plans to set Kyoto on fire, and in the chaos, kidnap the Emperor, take him to Choushuu and form a new government. A number of important Ishin Shishis were killed, including Miyabe Teizou of the Higo Domain and Yoshida Toshimarou of the Choushuu Domain. Katsura Kogorou escaped being killed because it is said that he overslept and thus missed the meeting. The incident took place in chapter 3. Kinmon no Hen ------------- After the Ikeda-ya Incident, the Choushuu formed an army and marched to Kyoto to avenge the Ikeda-ya incident. The battle took place near the Hamaguri Gate of the Imperial Place on July 16th. The Choushuu suffered a great defeat, and some 28,000 homes were burnt down. The battle took place in chapter 4. Itou Kashitarou --------------- Sometime in October, 1864, Itou Kashitarou joined the Shinsengumi as a millitary advisor. Battle of Toba Fushimi ---------------------- The first battle in the Boshin war. Most of the Shinsengumi were destroyed here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. F.A.Q. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These are some of the questions that have troubled me and people that play this game. Q: Can I get the revolver? A: Yes, you can. There are two types: 6-shot revolver and 10-shot revolver. They are under 'Other Ryuu'. Of course, I don't need to mention that you'll need to get the techniques first. Q: How do I counter-attack? A: This requires many trainings. Press X at the moment the enemy is attacking, and if you have the appropiate move in your stance, you can counter-attack. If you don't, you will just block. Do note that some attacks are very hard to counter, especially the thrust. Q: I kept failing this stealth mission! A: There are two types of stealth missions. In the first one you must not run (though you can kill anybody that comes your way, IF you are able to fight silently). The second one requires you to avoid all the ronins to reach a particular point on the map. Q: Who are these people? A: There are three people that are in the Shinsengumi that I had not mentioned either in the roster or in the wanted list. They are Yamanami/Sannan Keisuke, Yamazaki Susumu and Itou Kashitarou. Yamanami is the man you often see sitting at his table, in orange clothing. Yamazaki's head is shaved in the middle. He is the guy who gave you new wanted lists at the start of every chapter and gives new information. In short, a spy. Itou looks young, wears black and have a formal air around him. Send me your questions! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11. Misc Information ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11.1 Those Little Things ------------------------ -The geisha's kimono changes every chapter. Try comparing them to the current season. -Visible in the game are the family crests of Hijikata, Serizawa and Saito. If you don't know it, well, they are real. -The R1 button is used to view the dog in Status Menu?! -If the enemy is too close to the wall, and you attempt to break their block by pressing Square, they sometimes bounce back at you and make you stumble. -Chapter 8 is the only chapter that took place in winter. 11.2 Other Stuff Featuring the Shinsengumi ----------------------------------------- Rurouni Kenshin Burai Peacemaker Peacemaker Kurogane Last Blade ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12.
