The Game Modes | \===================/ There are 5 different game modes to participate in in ESPN NFL Football. In this section, this is where it will be broken down more in-depth. +---------------+ | 6A. Franchise | +---------------+ The Franchise Mode is where you get to create a dynasty. Take a team (or 2) and lead them to glory. Control all aspects of the game from the Gridiron, to the Front Office, you make the decisions. You are the Coach on the Gridiron. You call the plays, you call the challenges. You're also the players. You make the hits, you make the plays happen. In the Front Office, you are the general manager. You have the power to release poeple to the Free Agency, sign players, and renegotiate contracts. You also have the power to change the depth charts and adjust formations to how you see fit. You also get to conduct trades and go through the NFL Draft. The world is yours in Franchise Mode. +------------+ | 6B. Season | +------------+ The Season Mode is where you are the Coach and general manager for 1 season only. Your goal is to lead a team to the playoffs and ultimately, the Super Bowl. You get to do the some of the same things here as in Franchise Mode, but you aren't as powerful, since you are only playing for one season only. +----------------+ | 6C. Tournament | +----------------+ The Tournament Mode is where you get to set up a playoff between 4, 8, or 16 teams. Select any teams you wish to enter the Tournament and play just as if you were in playing a normal game. The winner of the tournament determines the champion. Much more exciting if you have human players and 16 teams. +---------------+ | 6D. Situation | +---------------+ Hmmm...looks like we have a bit of a problem. You are facing 1st and 25. You are deep in your own territory (actually, the 2 yard line). There is only 30 seconds left on the clock and you have no timeouts. The other team is up by 7 and the defense has been stopping your running game and putting pressure on your QB all game. Do you have what it takes to lead your team to victory? Well, that's what it's like to be in Situation Mode. You control everything from how much time is on the clock, how many timeouts are left, and where to start your drive from. Re-enact games of the past where it seemed impossible to make a comeback. You, in Situation Mode, can make it happen. +------------+ | 6E. Online | +------------+ So, you think you're the best huh? Well, there are millions of people out there that think differently. Challenge someone to an online game and see if you have what it takes to compete with people around the globe. Best if you have a broadband connection. /=============\ | 7. The Crib | \=============/ Welcome to The Crib! The Crib is the place where you come to relax from the hardships that is football. Relax in your recliner. Chill at your bar. Watch some movies. Listen to some music. But something's wrong. Your Crib is...dull. "What do you mean by dull?" you might ask. Well, I mean, your Crib is boring. You have nothing in it. You can't do anything interesting in your Crib. "Well, what can I do to make my Crib awesome?" you might ask. Win. And win big. The beauty about The Crib is that to make it better, you have to play some serious football. Items can be unlocked in each area of The Crib, thus, adding personality to your Crib. See that empty wall to your right as soon as you enter The Crib? That's where you place trophies. And in order to get those trophy cases filled, you have to really play some serious football. In order to unlock items and make your Crib the place to be, you have to complete Milestones. There are several Milestones that you must complete in several categories. All of this will be explained later. Accomplish the Milestones, and you will have a truly amazing Crib. So get out on the Gridiron, and play hard so that you can get some pretty amazing stuff for your Crib. /========================================================\ | 8. The Breaking Down of the Teams in ESPN NFL Football | \========================================================/ Well. As you all know, there are 32 teams in the NFL. Yet, there are also other teams available in the game. Along with the 32 NFL teams, you have the NFC & AFC Pro Bowl Teams, the NFL All-Stars Team, and many other teams that you (or even family members) might know. In this section, I will break down all of the teams that are available in ESPN NFL Football. The 32 NFL Teams are broken down as follows: |============================================================| | Name of Team | Offense | Defense | Overall | |============================================================| | 49ers | 90 | 87 | 88 | | Bears | 79 | 86 | 83 | | Bengals | 78 | 79 | 79 | | Bills | 82 | 87 | 85 | | Broncos | 89 | 79 | 85 | | Browns | 78 | 81 | 80 | | Buccaneers | 83 | 97 | 91 | | Cardinals | 73 | 74 | 74 | | Chargers | 87 | 78 | 83 | | Chiefs | 95 | 76 | 86 | | Colts | 89 | 80 | 85 | | Cowboys | 75 | 82 | 79 | | Dolphins | 86 | 96 | 91 | | Eagles | 90 | 92 | 90 | | Falcons | 84 | 83 | 83 | | Giants | 85 | 88 | 86 | | Jaguars | 79 | 85 | 83 | | Jets | 88 | 83 | 85 | | Lions | 78 | 79 | 79 | | Packers | 92 | 79 | 86 | | Panthers | 76 | 88 | 83 | | Patriots | 78 | 92 | 86 | | Raiders | 95 | 90 | 92 | | Rams | 89 | 87 | 88 | | Ravens | 80 | 88 | 85 | | Redskins | 76 | 83 | 80 | | Saints | 87 | 76 | 83 | | Seahawks | 88 | 87 | 87 | | Steelers | 89 | 88 | 88 | | Texans | 75 | 81 | 79 | | Titans | 85 | 88 | 86 | | Vikings | 90 | 81 | 85 | |============================================================| There are also teams out there that are the best of the best in the NFL. Obviously, I'm talking about the Pro Bowl Teams of the AFC & NFC. They are broken down as follows: |============================================================| | Name of Team | Offense | Defense | Overall | |============================================================| | AFC | 100 | 100 | 98 | | NFC | 100 | 100 | 98 | | NFL All-Stars | 100 | 100 | 98 | |============================================================| There are also teams that consists of Alumni from the various colleges across the country. The teams are the Far West (FW), Great Plains (GP), Midwest (MW), Northeast (NE), Southeast (SE), and Southwest (SW) Alumni. The Far West probably consists of Alumni from schools in the Pac-10 Conference and schools on the West Coast. The Great Plains probably consists of Alumni from schools in the Big 10 and schools in the plains. The Midwest probably consists of Alumni from schools in the Big 12 and or Conference USA conferences. The Northeast probably consists of Alumni from the Big East, ACC, Ivy League, and or Atlantic 10 conferences. The Southeast probably consists of Alumni from schools in the SEC and or Conference USA conferences. And the Southwest probably consists of Alumni from the schools in the PAC-10 conference. Of course, these are just theories. If you do know what each of the Alumni teams affiliate with what conference in College Football, please send me an e-mail so that I may add it to the FAQ and you will get recognition. These teams are broken down as follows: |============================================================| | Name of Team | Offense | Defense | Overall | |============================================================| | FW Alumni | 100 | 100 | 98 | | GP Alumni | 92 | 93 | 92 | | MW Alumni | 100 | 100 | 98 | | NE Alumni | 100 | 99 | 98 | | SE Alumni | 100 | 100 | 98 | | SW Alumni | 91 | 100 | 95 | |============================================================| But football wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for the Legends. Yes, the Legends. These teams are teams that in some way, shape, or form, made a huge impact on the world of football. While I will list the teams, I must let you know that these teams have no ratings in any category. You can rate them yourself when you play them. And now, I present to you the Teams of Football Past: |================================================| | Name of Team | Year of Legendary Team | |================================================| | 49ers | 81, 89, 94 | | Bears | 63, 85 | | Bengals | 81, 88 | | Bills | 64, 90 | | Broncos | 77, 86, 98 | | Browns | 64, 86 | | Buccaneers | 79, 99, 02 | | Cardinals | 75 | | Chargers | 63, 80, 94 | | Chiefs | 69, 93 | | Colts | 70 | | Cowboys | 71, 77, 92 | | Dolphins | 72, 84 | | Eagles | 60, 80 | | Falcons | 80, 98 | | Giants | 56, 86, 90 | | Jaguars | 99 | | Jets | 68, 98 | | Lions | 53, 91 | | Oilers | 61, 79 | | Packers | 66, 96 | | Panthers | 96 | | Patriots | 85, 01 | | Raiders | 67, 76, 83 | | Rams | 79, 99 | | Ravens | 00 | | Redskins | 82, 87, 91 | | Saints | 91, 00 | | Seahawks | 84, 99 | | Steelers | 75, 78, 95 | | Texans | 62 | | Titans | 99 | | Vikings | 69, 73, 98 | |================================================| Finally, we come down to the very last team. This team must be unlocked in order to play with them. This team is Chris Berman's Swamis Team. This team is broken down as follows: |============================================================| | Name of Team | Offense | Defense | Overall | |============================================================| | Swamis | 100 | 100 | 98 | |============================================================| And there you have it. Every team in the game and their ratings. Most teams are balanced. Yet, we know that some teams are either "pass-happy" (love to pass the ball) or "run-happy" (love to run the ball). I am declaring a team "pass-happy" if they have an amazing QB or several WRs that are weapons. To me, the "pass-happy" teams are as follows: + 49ers + Colts + Eagles + Falcons + Jaguars + Jets + Packers + Patriots + Raiders + Rams + Saints + Titans + Vikings Then you have those teams that are "run-happy". I am declaring these teams as "run-happy" because they either have dominating RBs or a QB that can scramble. To me, these are the "run-happy" teams: + Bengals + Browns + Cardinals + Chargers + Chiefs + Dolphins + Eagles + Falcons + Packers + Ravens + Seahawks + Steelers + Titans That's just my honest opinion. Maybe all of these are balanced between the run and the pass. Maybe I'm right. But you know what? Please, DO NOT BOMBARD MY E-MAIL RANTING ABOUT WHY A TEAM MAY OR MAY NOT BE PASS- OR RUN-HAPPY! I won't even bother to look at an e-mail if the first sentence says something like, "The Packers are not run-happy because...". Trust me, if I see such an e-mail, chances are, I'll block your e-mail address and place you into some kind of Hall of Shame. I don't know. Just, don't do it. /============================================\ | 9. The Milestones & How to Accomplish Them | \============================================/ Remember earlier how we were talking about how your Crib was boring? Well, the only way to get your Crib to be the Crib of Cribs, is to accomplish several milestones. These milestones are obviously high points in your career. When you acomplish a milestone, most times, you get a trophy. But there are times where you get an item to have your Crib decked out. There are six types of milestones you must accomplish. They are Primetime, Single Game, Career, Big Play, Timelock, and Menu Milestones. In your Crib, there are 4 trophy cases. Each trophy case is titled. The far left trophy case is your Primetime Trophy Case. In this trophy case, your first major accomplishments are immortalized. The middle left trophy case is your Single Game Trophy Case. In this trophy case, all the stats you accrue in a single game are immortalized here. The middle right trophy case is your Career Trophy Case. In this trophy case, all the stats you have accrued over the course of the ENTIRE game are immortalized here. And the far right trophy case is your Big Play Trophy Case. In this trophy case, the biggest plays are recognized and immortalized here. You don't get trophies for Menu and Timelock Milestones. Instead, you get items. You also get items and bonus items from all milestones accomplished. Below, I have listed each milestone and what category it is in. Furthermore, I have listed what you have to do to accomplish the milestone. I will not list what you can earn. Hey, I got to leave some excitement in the game for you guys, right? - Big Play Milestones For the Big Play Milestones, these must be done with any difficulty, set on 5 minutes, with all penalties on, and default settings: |=====================================================| | Type of Play | The Different Milestones | |=====================================================| | TD Run | 30, 40, 60, 99 yard run | | TD Pass | 30, 40, 60, 99 yard pass | | Field Goal | 40, 45, 50, 55 yard FG | | Kick/Punt | 60, 70, 80, 99 yard return | |=====================================================| That gets you 16 trophies in your Big Play Trophy Case. The best way to get the trophies is to earn the first 3 trophies as quickly as possible for each category. On the 99 yard pass/run, get a kick return or punt return and go back towards the 0 yard line. From there, slowly walk to the sideline at the 0, and just hope you get a safety. Then, for the pass, go deep or dump of the pass on the running back and get a few good blocks. On the 55 yard field goal, just get to the 38 yard line of the opponent's territory and kick the field goal. Just hope the wind is not a factor in your kick. On the 99 yard kick/punt return, any deep ball that comes your way should be taken. Look for blocks and open areas and speed right through them. - Single Game Milestones For the Single Game Milestones, these must be done with any difficulty, set on 5 minutes, with all penalties on, with default settings, and done in a single game: |=========================================================| | Type of Play | The Different Milestones | |=========================================================| | Points | 49, 63, 77, 84 points in a game | | Yds. Rushing | 200, 275, 350, 400 yds. in a game | | Yds. Passing | 375, 450, 500, 600 yds. in a game | | Tackles | 10, 20, 30, 40 tackles in a game | | Sacks | 3, 5, 7, 9 sacks in a game | | Interceptions | 3, 5, 6, 7 interceptions in a game | |=========================================================| In order to effectively get these 16 trophies, what you need to do is dominate defensively and score quickly and effectively. For the Rushing Yards Trophies, you could set up your running back to run 200 yards in one half and 200 in another. That will be all 4 trophies for that category. For the Passing Yards Trophies, you could start any drive at the 1 or 0 yard line and pass all day. That should net you with 600 passing yards quickly. Just as long as you get 300 yards in each half. For the Tackles, Sacks, and Interceptions Trophies, just dominate on defense the entire game. Doing all of this should get you the Points Trophies with ease. See, it all comes together. - PrimeTime Milestones For the PrimeTime Milestones, these must be done with any difficulty, set on 5 minutes, with all penalties on, with default settings, and done in a single game: + Return a fumble for a Touchdown + Return an interception for a Touchdown + Throw a Touchdown pass to 6 different players + Force 7 Turnovers + Intercept 2 passes with the same player + Pass & rush for 250 & 100 yards with the same player + Rush & receive for 150 yards each withe the same player + Accumulate 650 yards of total offense + Score 6 rushing Touchdowns with the same player + Shutout the opposing team + Commit no turnovers + Beat the CPU by 56 points + Allow 0 or less yards total offense + No dropped passes by any receiver + Quarterback never sacked + Complete 100% of passes thrown (with 15 minimum) + Win the Super Bowl All of these trophies can be acquired easily. Have a dominating defense to cause the turnovers the entire game. That will knock out 6 trophies. For the 100% completion trophy, just pass to your running back. It's also beneficial if he gains some good yardage on the play as well. Also, have the running back runn effectively. Also have him score 6 rushing TDs. That will knock out 3 trophies. For the passing & rushing for 250 & 100, have a good scrambling QB, like Donovan McNabb to get the 100 rushing yards and pass effectively for the 250. There's another trophy. To accumulate 650 yards of total offense, run for 300 in one half and pass for 350 in another half. There's that trophy. To avoid your QB ever being sacked, just run the ball. There's the QB never sacked trophy. To have no dropped passes by any receiver, complete one pass a receiver and never pass the ball again. Then, you knock out the no dropped passes trophy. Commit no turnovers by not turning over the ball. Simple and common sense. Beat the CPu by 56 points should be easy on Pro difficulty. Enough said. To get the throw a Touchdown pass to 6 players trophy, pass a TD pass to 4 wide receivers, 1 running back, and 1 tight end. There's that trophy. And the greatest trophy in the entire case - Win the Super Bowl to earn the trophy. - Menu Milestones For the Menu Milestones, just go to the Main Menu and just enter or complete a mode in the Main Menu. However, for the difficulty based milestones, you need to have any difficulty, set on 5 minutes, with all penalties on, with default settings, and done in a single game. Milestones with an asterisk (*) by it means it is a difficulty milestone and must adhere to the rules: + Watch the ESPN NFL Football Features Movie + Watch the ESPN NFL Football Video Games Movie + Complete all tutorials + Enter the Reference Guide + Enter the Scrimmage Mode + Enter the Franchise Mode + Create a player + Create a team + Create a playbook + Play a First Person Football Game* + Win a Tournament* + Win a Pro Difficulty Game* + Win an All Pro Difficulty Game* + Win a Legend Difficulty Game* These milestones are practically self-explanatory. No description on how to do them is necessary. - Career Milestones For the Career Milestones, these must be accomplished throughout your ESPN NFL Football playing career. There is no special rules for these milestones. Just play 15 minute quarters and in no time, you should have these trophies completed: |=================================================================| | Type of Play | The Different Milestones | |=================================================================| | Wins | 25, 50, 100, 150 career wins | | Yds. Rushing | 2000, 4500, 7500, 15000 career passing yds. | | Yds. Passing | 4000, 8500, 15000, 20000 career passing yds. | | Sacks | 25, 100, 200, 500 career sacks | | Interceptions | 25, 50, 100, 250 career interceptions | |=================================================================| These are also self-explanatory. The Beauty of the Game - First Person Football | \====================================================/ This section is more of a review of the game. The true beauty of this game that no other football game has done before is that it allows you to play a game from the perspective of one of the players on the field. You hear no commentary (except for the fans and opposition) and the gameplay is more fierce and intense. You feel when a player gets hit, and you can see him blacking out with each and every hit he takes. Such a feature is truly amazing and fortunately, we, the fans of football and football games, can experience what real NFL players experience. /===================================================\ | 11. The Bulk of the Game - Establishing a Dynasty | \===================================================/ Another review. The bulk of ESPN NFL Football lies in the Franchise Mode. It is here that you can trade players, place players onthe Trading Block, go through the NFL Combine, the NFL Draft, and more Front Office duties. It is in Franchise Mode where you can see your team and coach's progress over the span of decades and you are in total control of the action. What better way of leading a dynasty than by entering a franchise? /=======================\ | 12. Tips for the Game | \=======================/ - When it comes to passing, throw bullets. Don't throw them too hard, or else your receivers won't catch the ball. - When it comes to running, wait for the blockers. No blockers lead to no holes for you to burst through. - If you want defensive trophies, use the defensive line. I can't tell you how many sacks I've had in just 1 game because I used my DL. - Shift the Linebackers and DBs. When used in conjuction with using the DL, just look above... - Motion is your best friend. When placed in motion, a WR can take away attention from a defense. Use this to your advantage when you want to use the run. Same works for your FB. - Adhere to the Reference Manual. There are a ton of other tips there. /==================================\ | 13. Giving Credit Where It's Due | \==================================/ First off, I would like to thank my brother Andre' for pushing me to buy this game for him. CJayC of GameFAQs for posting my FAQ on his prestigous website. Next, I'd like to thank ESPN for giving us such an uncanny football experience. Next up, myself for writing this guide. And finally, you, the reader. Without you, there is no me. /=================\ | 14. Final Words | \=================/ W. Dixon is in no way affiliated with ESPN or the NFL.
