He was Cao Cao's personal bodyguard and followed him everywhere he went. He was both feared and admired by many people. The pepole who feared him give him the nickname "Pure Evil". During the night at Wan Castle, his weapons was stolen and was forced to use bare hands to fight off enemies to defend Cao Cao. While Cao Cao was escaping, Dian Wei fought against the enemies that tried to rush through the gate that leads to Cao Cao. It is rumored that he killed hundereds of enemies using enemy bodies as weapons. Finaly he was brought down by enemy archers. After Cao Cao escaped, Cao Cao said that the greatest lost at Wan Castle was not his son Cao Ang, but Dian Wei. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why use Dian Wei ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dian Wei is an offensive powerhouse. Even though his attack range and speed aren't that great, he has great attack power and average crowd clearing moves. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unlocking Dian Wei ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unlock Dian Wei all you need to do is to clear Wei's Musou Mode Chapter One. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dian Wei's moves ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keys: S = Square button, T = Triangle button, C = Circle button Basic S moves: S - A right to left hack SS - A left to right hack back SSS - A tilted right to left hack SSSS - A vertical from top to bottom hack SSSSS - A clockwise turnning all-around hack SSSSSS - A counter-clockwise jumping all-around hack Running S move: S (while running): A charging headbutt. Charged moves (with T): T - A quick, unblock able grab on the enemy's neck. The enemy was then tossed into the air, and headbutted far away. This is one of Dian Wei's best moves, although it usually only does damage to one enemy, the damage done is huge. Another good thing about this move is that it's unblock able. ST - A bottom to top turn-around hack that sends enemy flying in the air. It is a good move if you're planning to do more combos on the enemy. SST(TTT) - A continuous vertical top to bottom hack three times, it ends with a right to left hack. Another great move for Dian Wei, a quick combo that is easy to use. It only hits the enemies infront of Dian Wei, but the damages done are great. SSST - The ax was thrown like a boomerang infront of Dian Wei. This is my faviort move to use when I'm playing Dian Wei. Even if the enemy was able to block the ax when it was thrown, when it comes back it has a chance to hit the enemy on the back. This is also a good crowd clearing move of Dian Wei. SSSST(T) - Dian Wei uses his both hand and throw the enemies flying high in the air. This move gives you chance to combo the enemy more. If another T is pressed, Dian Wei will jump up and hack the enemy back down. SSSSST - A powerful vertical as-wave is sent out infront of Dian Wei. The move covers a long range and also does huge damage to whoever it hits. The bad part is that it rarly hits more than one enemy, and it's very hard to control to hit the specific enemy you want to hit. Normal moves and charged moves summary: Dian Wei's move aren't fast, but they're powerful. Some of his moves are also good at crowd clearing, which makes up for his lack of speed and attack range. Musou moves: C - Repeated back and forth left to right to left hacks. Ends with a huge turn-around clockwise hack. This mousou move foucus mainly on the enemies infront of Dian Wei. It is designed to clear only the front, but if used correctly, it can clear all enemies around Dian Wei. It is also good against single enemies. C (True Musou) - It begins the same with the regular musou move except the enemies that are hit catches on fire. Near the end there're three big vertical top to bottom hack, and finish with a huge turn-around clockwise hack. It is similar to Dian Wei's SST(TTT). Jump moves: S - A horizontal hack that can both clear crowds and knock enemies off their horses. T - A good crowd-clearing move that knocks down the enemies around Dian Wei. It's a good move if it's connected, but it can be broken by the jump attacks from the enemies around Dian Wei. On horse moves: S attacks - Normal left-right hacks. T attacks - A charged up left-right hack that does more damage than the S attacks, but nothing special. C attack - The mosou attack on horse is nothing more than the S attacks except that it does more damage and looks cooler. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unlocking Dian Wei's level 10 weapon (Mad Bull) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First you must have Dian Wei's level 9 weapon before getting his level 10 weapon. The requirements: Play the battle of Wan Castle, Cao Cao's side. First defeat Hu Che Er. Then make Zhang Xiu retreat by defeating him or drain his HP down more than half. After Zhang Xiu retreats go to Cao Cao and trigger the Dian Wei meet Cao Cao cut-sceen. Follow Cao Cao and get the flame blocking escape route message. Keep following Cao Cao and trigger the cut-sceen where Xu Zhu breaks though the door and allowing was to escape. Dian Wei then should get the Mad Bull accquired message. My suggestions for getting the weapon When the battle of Wan Castle starts, move stright foward and defeat Hu Che Er. Then continue left and make Zhang Xiu retreat (When I didn't defeat him and make him retreat, I continued on and didn't get the weapon the first time. But the second time I defeated him and I got a message saying Zhang Xiu retreated, so I continued and later got the weapon. I'm not sure if you have to defeat him, but I suggest you do). Then go meet up with Cao Cao and the cut-sceen shoud trigger when you get close to him. Just follow Cao Cao down the castle after the cut-sceen and defeat Jia Xu. After Jia Xu is defeated keep following Cao Cao and you should get the message saying the fire is preventing escape. The Xu Zhu cut-sceen should come right after the fire message. Then Dian Wei should get the Mad Bull right after Xu Zhu appears. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dian Wei's models ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model 1 (get this initially): A small silver metal jacket on the upperbody. Blue pants with black metal guard, along with purple cloth waist guard. Also has a horsehead like arm-guard on the left arm. Model 2 (get rank 12): A small gold metal jacket on the upperbody. Blue pants with gold metal guard, along with blue cloth waist guard. Also had the horsehead guard, and the skin of Dian Wei is darker. Model 3 (get rank 7): The exact same custom as model 1, but has a blue bandana on. Model 4 (get rank 7): The exact same custom as model 2. but has a light blue bandana on. Model 5 (get rank MAX): Dian Wei's custom from DW3. Spiked upperbody metal guard. Blue pants along with Nanman like plant guard on the waist. Also has the horse head arm guard on left hand, but bigger. The right hand has a spiked guard. Model 6 (get rank MAX): Dian Wei's alternate custom from DW3 XL. Blue spiked upperbody metal guard. White pants along with the same Nanman like plant guard on the waist. The same horsehead and spike arm guards as model 5, but Dian Wei's skin is darker. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My strategies using Dian Wei ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Against normal crowds of soldiers: When I'm up against a group of normal useless soldiers, I tends to use Dian Wei's Jumping S, SST(TTT), SSST and the regular S moves. When enemies are charging at me, I just use a quick jump S and stop them in their tracks. The jumping S shouldn't be too high, but quick and low. All the character's SST(TTT) are usually good, Dian Wei is not an exception. The last hit on the SST(TTT) can really clear out the crowds infron of Dian Wei. Now my faviort Dian Wei move, the SSST. If this move is used while turnning Dian Wei, it can clear out everyone around him. Also, if the first hit miss some of the enemies, the second hit can knock them back down. Since Dian Wei don't have any other great crowds clearing moves, I sometimes use his normal S attacks, his SSSSSS is a decent crowd clearing move. Against officer along with soldiers: When a officer and solider comes along, I use T, SST(TTT), SSSST, and SSSSST. I usually goes stright to the officer and use the T to throw him away, so I can finish off his bodyguards around him. After the officer is away I use the SST(TTT) to the bulkest part of the crowd, and try to take down as many as I can. By then the officer should be back up and I just use the SSSST to knock everyone back down again. If it's only this officer is left, I just pull off the SSSSST, the last T can by tricky and hard to connect, but it'll really hurt anyone who got hit. When dueling: When the duel first start, I try to use Dian Wei's T and get the first hit on the enemy. When the enemy pop back up I use the SSST, the first hit usually miss, but almost every time when the ax comes back it hacks the enemy's back. If the enemy is guarding too much, I just use the T again. When I get the enemy off guard and able to get a lot of combos on him I tend to use the SSSST(T) than the SSSSST. The SSSSST is really hard to connect in a duel, most of the time the enemy officer blocks it. But SSSST(T) you can hardly miss, making the SSSST(T) more valueble than the SSSSST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggested items for Dian Wei ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In DW4, you have a wide range of items you can choose from, different horses, orbs, and items. Here want I suggest to use when playing Dian Wei. Dian Wei (4 item slots) Harness: Shadow, Red Hare. (Use the Shadow so you can¡¯t get knocked off, but when you're rushing through a stage, take the Red Hare) Orbs: Lightning Orb, Slash Orb, or Fire Orb. (I like to use the Lightning because when enemies are struck it gives you more time to combo them again) Items: -Peacock Urn -Wind Scroll -Tiger Amulet -Tortise Shell I always carry a Peacock Urn with me when I go into a battle. You want to extract the very last bit of hit-point possible, they could be the difference between victory and defeat. Don't go into a battle without one. I use the Wind Scroll because Dian Wei got a considerly short range of attack, the Wind Scroll really helps him a lot. Dian Wei's musou isn't that great, so it's not nessary to carry any musou boosting items with him. Dian Wei's attack is already good, but a Tiger Amulet will make him better. Because of Dian Wei's speed, he will usually get hit in the back a lot, so a Tortise Shell will help to reduce some of the damage done to him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAQs ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When I get questions about Dian Wei, I will post them in this section along with my answers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Credits ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I created this guide all by myself, but still, I have a couple of people to give out thanks to.
