Introduction II. III. Basic Pronunciation Guide IV. Pronunciation Guide 1. Wei Kingdom 2. Shu Kingdom 3. Wu Kingdom 4. Others V. Conclusion ------------------------- Introduction ------------------------- Welcome to my first ever FAQ! This FAQ is obviously for the excellent game Dynasty Warriors 3, from Koei. What's the point of this FAQ, you ask? Well the English voice acting in the game.. well to be frank, it sucks. Very few, if any, of the in-game pronunciations come close to what each name should be. So I've taken it upon myself to compile a list of how to properly pronounce each character's name. I hope you find it a good resource. Please note that I do not speak Chinese. The basis for the actual pronunciations included in this guide is the Romance of Three Kingdoms TV series (which is in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles). There's a chance I could be wrong in my interpretation of the names. I've organized this FAQ by kingdom, and further broken down each character as follows: IN-GAME PRONUNCIATION: Self-explanatory. How the name is pronounced by the English voice actor. ACTUAL PRONUNCIATION: Again, self-explanatory. How you should pronounce the character's name AKA: This will include the character's style (familiar name), as well as any particular title he/she is given in the novel 'The Romance of Three Kingdoms' which the game is based on. To read the online version of the novel, visit http://www.threekingdoms.com. I take no credit whatsoever for this website, and include it only to familiarize those who may not be aware that DW3 is based on actual history and has an amazing novel written about it. -------------------------- Disclaimer -------------------------- This guide in its entirety was written by me, and may not be used without my permission. If you want to use this guide, send me an email and ask my permission; I'll more than likely say yes. Don't be a jerk and steal my stuff and then pass it off as your own. -------------------------- Basic Pronunciations -------------------------- In order to help with the pronunciation (as well as help those who plan on buying the novel; obviously I'm not including every single character who appears), I've included this short basic guide to pronunciation. VOWELS A = 'ah' sound as in "hah" E = 'eh' sound as in "men" * While re-examining the TV series, I notice that when said with a Chinese accent, the letter E sounds more like "uh" than "eh". However for clarity this guide will continue to utilise the "eh" pronunciation. I = 'ee' sound as in "whee" * In some cases, the I sound is 'ih' as in "sick". I've noticed this frequently occurs when the given name consists of a consonant followed by the I. U = 'oo' sound as in 'who' In addition, there are the following special cases: ZH gives a 'J' sound as in 'jury' C gives a "Ts" sound X gives an 'Sh' sound as in "shore" Q gives a 'Ch' sound as in "cheese" IU gives a 'yoo' sound as in "yoo-hoo' AO gives an 'ow' sound UI gives a 'way' sound OU gives a 'oh' EI gives an 'ay' sound as in "may" UE gives a 'weh' sound EXAMPLES Cao Rui = 'Tsow Rway' Yue Jin = 'Yweh Jin' Li Jue = 'Lee Jweh' -------------------------- Pronunciation Guide -------------------------- [ WEI KINGDOM ] CAO CAO In-Game Pronunciation: 'Cow Cow' Actual Pronunciation: 'Tsow Tsow' AKA: Cao Mengde ('Mehng-deh'), Cao Ah Man ('Ah Mahn'), August Emperor Wu [of Wei] (Wei Wudi -- 'Way Woo-dee'), Great Founder [of Wei] (Taizu -- 'Tie-zoo') ZHANG LIAO In-Game Pronunciation: 'Zang Lee-ow' Actual Pronunciation: 'Jhang Lee-ow' AKA: Wenyuan ('Wehn-ywan') DIAN WEI In-Game Pronunciation: 'Dee-ahn Way' Actual Pronunciation: 'Dee-ahn Way' AKA: Ziman ('Zee-mahn') SIMA YI In-Game Pronunciation: 'See-mah Yee' Actual Pronunciation: 'Sih-mah Yih' AKA: Zhongda ('Jong-dah'), August Emperor Xuan [of Jin] ('Shoo-wan') ZHEN JI In-Game Pronunciation: 'Zen Jee' Actual Pronunciation: 'Jehn Jee' AKA: Lady Zhen, August Empress Wen Zhao [of Wei] ('Wehn Jaow') NOTE: In the novel, Zhen Ji is always referred to as Lady Zhen. Her actual name is Sun Ren (I assume the novel uses Lady Sun to remind the reader that she's female, since the given name Ren is also used for male characters e.g. Cao Ren). In addition, although I'm not entirely certain, I believe that Shangxiang (which should be written as one word, although it consists of two characters) is her style name. TAISHI CI In-Game Pronunciation: 'Tie-shee See' Actual Pronunciation: 'Tie-shee Tsih' AKA: Ziyi ('Zee-yee') LU MENG In-Game Pronunciation: 'Loo Mehng' Actual Pronunciation: 'Loo Mehng' AKA: LU XUN In-Game Pronunciation: 'Loo Zoon' Actual Pronunciation: 'Loo Shoon' AKA: Boyan ('Boh-yahn') ZHOU YU In-Game Pronunciation: 'Joh Yoo' Actual Pronunciation: 'Joh Yoo' AKA: Gongjin ('Gong-jihn') HUANG GAI In-Game Pronunciation: 'Hwang Guy' Actual Pronunciation: 'Hwang Guy' AKA: Gongfu ('Gong-foo') DA QIAO In-Game Pronunciation: "Dah Kee-ow' Actual Pronunciation: 'Dah Chee-ow' AKA: Lady Qiao XIAO QIAO In-Game Pronunciation: 'Shee-ow Kee-ow' Actual Pronunciation: 'Shee-ow Chee-ow' AKA: Lady Qiao NOTE: In the novel, both Da Qiao and her sister (Xiao Qiao) are referred to as 'The Two Qiaos', or, if they appear singly, as Lady Qiao (such as with Da Qiao, right before Sun Ce's death). Also, Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao aren't really their names, but 'da' means big (as in older) and 'xiao' means little (as in younger). [ OTHERS ] ZHANG JIAO In-Game Pronunciation: 'Zang Jaow' Actual Pronunciation: 'Jhang Jee-ow' AKA: Zhang Jue ('Jweh') NOTE: In the novel, Zhang Jiao is named Zhang Jue, yet in the game series he's always called Zhang Jiao. I've included both names here for completeness. DONG ZHUO In-Game Pronunciation: 'Dong Jwoh' Actual Pronunciation: 'Dong Jwoh' AKA: Zhongyin LU BU In-Game Pronunciation: 'Loo Boo' Actual Pronunciation: 'Loo Boo' AKA: Fengxian ('Fehng-shee-an') NOTE: As far as I can tell, the actual pronunciation for Lu Bu is something like "Lee-w Boo" (almost as if it were Liu Bu), but in my copy of Three Kingdoms it clearly indicates it's pronounced the same as the Lu in Lu Meng, so for this guide's purposes it's 'Loo Boo'. DIAO CHAN In-Game Pronunciation: 'Dee-ow Chahn' Actual Pronunciation: 'Dee-ow Chahn' AKA: YUAN SHAO In-Game Pronunciation: 'Wahn Shaow' Actual Pronunciation: 'Ywan Shaow' AKA: Yuan Benchu ('Behn-choo') MENG HUO In-Game Pronunciation: 'Mehng Hwoh' Actual Pronunciation: 'Mehng Hwoh' AKA: ZHU RONG In-Game Pronunciation: 'Zoo Rong' Actual Pronunciation: 'Joo Rong' AKA: Lady Zhurong, Madame Zhurong FU XI In-Game Pronunciation: N/A Actual Pronunciation: 'Foo Shee' AKA: NU WA In-Game Pronunciation: N/A Actual Pronunciation: 'Noo Wah' -------------------------- Conclusion -------------------------- That wraps up the pronunciation guide. Hopefully this will help people out by showing the right way to say the character's names. I just became so tired of people thinking Cao Cao was pronounced 'Cow Cow'. And don't even get me started on Cao Pi... Thank you for playing.. err I mean reading. And remember, don't be a Yuan Shao! Listen to advice people give to you, or your immense army may be crushed and you could die a lonely, lonely man. ... Or not. END This document is ©2002 by Wayne Molina.
