If you want to e-mail me, do so at elainenara@yahoo.com with Dark Cloud 2, Dark Chronicle, or some other derivation thereof in the subject line so I know you're not trying to sell me porn or something. Also, please demonstrate that you've at least read the guide before you send me an e-mail begging for assistance. I have moved up the FAQs - people have frequently asked me these questions over and over, and I'm tired of reanswering them - it cuts into time I could be enhancing the guide. After this, answers will no longer be entertained to those questions unless you can demonstrate that my answer to said question is insufficient. If you don't get a response from me, the answer is probably already in the FAQ. Since this guide is presently only up through Chapter 3, I will gladly do my best to answer your questions (from memory) for any section afterwards, as long they AREN'T in the Frequently Asked Questions below. I have answered a couple of the tricky questions for later areas of the game in the FAQ section, so it probably wouldn't hurt to check out that space down there for additional advice. Questions on pictures are happily accepted, especially as I'm still writing them all up . Do not ask me for a guide on a specific area of the game outside of walkthrough type questions (read: on Inventions) if you don't see it here. If it's not in the guide right now, it's not ready. I am not withholding information from you folks for the sake of withholding information. I'm not that cruel. This guide is based on the Japanese version of Dark Cloud 2, Dark Chronicle. Your mileage may vary, but considering the short turnaround time on this game, the game versions should stay pretty much the same save for tweaking and updating of signs. (They didn't screw up the voice acting! HALLELUJAH!) I am slowly updating names for the U.S. version, but for now please do NOT e-mail me about them if you see discrepancies! I have friends who will be helping me out with that task. The one exception to the mass U.S name updating is that the main character, Maximillian, will be referred to as Yuris throughout this guide. Why? His name is Yuris in Japan, and after knowing him as Yuris for forever, I am too lazy to change my way of thinking to start calling him Max. Deal with it. If you don't like it, write your own guide. :P Wherever I could, I've attempted to match up my translations for item names to translations used in the original English version of Dark Cloud. If an item shows up with a different name than from Dark Cloud in those cases in the Region 1 (American) version -- blame Sony. I have tried to be consistent in naming standards within a given series. It's not my fault if Sony doesn't follow suit! For character names, attempting that trick was definitely unfeasible, since (almost) all the characters in Dark Chronicle are brand new. What I have done for those cases is look at the katakana and put down all of my best guesses for possible anglicizations, so that I hopefully manage to nail it SOMEHOW. Nonetheless, Sony's translation team has changed some of the names significantly from those originals, and I swear they did it just to make my life difficult. To help alleviate that, I've done my best to describe the character's appearance/location as best as possible. I have tried to avoid spoilers as much as possible. For that reason, names of various personages may be deliberately obscured/ made misleading, and descriptions of cutscenes have been totally deleted wherever it was feasible to do so. I have encoded this FAQ in Shift-JIS format, so that I can show you the original Japanese for names and suchlike. To read the Japanese properly, you will need to have Japanese language support for your browser. Since this is a text document as opposed to HTML, you will need to force the browser to recognize it. (For IE -- Go to view, then Encoding, then select Japanese Shift-JIS; for Netscape 7.0 and above, go to View, Character Coding, then select Japanese Shift-JIS.) If you're playing Dark Chronicle without knowledge of katakana/hiragana, you're absolutely crazy. This is an action *RPG*; it behooves you to actually be able to read some of the text! Again, all translations/ spellings of the names are my own, unless noted otherwise, and may not be the same for the Region 1 release of Dark Cloud 2. ________________________________________________________________________ / \ dc_toc \ | | Table of Contents | \___/____________________________________________________________________/ **************************************************************************** To zip ahead to the part of the guide you want, Type CTRL + F and then the code below! **************************************************************************** -1) Legal Notice/Translation Notes/E-mail --------- (above - just scroll up) 1) Miscellaneous Information about Dark Chronicle ---------------- dc_misc 2) FAQs ---------------------------------------------------------- dc_faqs 3) How to Play --------------------------------------------------- dc_howto 4) Walkthrough --------------------------------------------------- dc_walk - Complete from Prologue --> Chapter 4! - For a particular Dungeon floor, the first X is the area, and XX is the floor #. Its predecessor in the series, Dark Cloud, is widely regarded by most to be the first RPG (even though it should properly be labeled as an action RPG) for the Sony Playstation 2 in the United States. Dark Chronicle's sales as of the initial release of this FAQ were over 200,000 units - a solid commercial success by anyone's standard in Japan. It was originally released in Japan on November 28th, 2002, and was released in the United States as Dark Cloud 2 on February 19th, 2003. The defining features of the Dark Cloud series are: 1) Combat. A trademark of the Dark Cloud series is the ability to switch between multiple characters. While you only control one character at a time, you get to push buttons and whack on enemies (hence the 'action' element of this RPG series). Unlike Dark Cloud, which had six characters you can fight with, this time you have really only three - Yuris, the main hero; Monica, the main heroine; and Steve the Ridepod. Each of them has multiple attacks, unlike the original Dark Cloud where your character only had one type of attack. Yuris and Monica both have a regular attack and a ranged attack (Wrench/Gun and Sword/Magic respectively). Ridepod, Yuris's robot, only has one weapon available to it at a time without diving into the item menu, but it is EXTREMELY customizeable in its weaponry. Additionally, Monica also gains the ability to transform into other monsters through the use of special badges during Chapter 2. 2) Randomly Generated Dungeons. The dungeons in Dark Chronicle are divided into floors. While the infamous "back rooms" of Dark Cloud, which were filled with tons and tons of treasure, are notably absent, the dungeon size this time around is notably larger. The other new feature is the ability to play some mini-games for additional medals. When you reach chapter 2, you will unlock the option to possibly fish in some areas, and in the middle of chapter 3, you will learn the wonders of Spheeda, or Golfing! 3) The Georama System. One of the great innovations in Dark Cloud that has faithfully been continued in Dark Chronicle is the Georama system. Your task - recreate the world even bigger and better than when it was before it was affected by (something that you'll find out during the course of the game). Well, not much bigger, but you WILL make it better. You get to place houses, people, rivers, and streets, to create the optimum happiness among the inhabitants of the area. Mastering the Georama system is essential for completion of Dark Chronicle. 4) Weapon Evolution. Your characters do not gain experience, per se - your weapons do. While finding certain items during the course of the game does allow you to improve your character's general defensive ability and hit points, true strength comes to the warrior who uses his or her weapons on a regular basis -- and keeps them repaired, too. Every attack causes your weapons to become gradually more and more worn, until they ultimately break. This is obviously a Bad Thing that you want to prevent if at all possible. Thankfully, they got rid of that pesky perma-breaking of weapons from the original Dark Cloud, so you no longer have to worry about permanently losing your weapon by accident. You are also able to superpowerup your present weapon by a process called Spectralization. If you Spectralize items and other weapons in your item menu, you can add those spectralized parts to your other weapons. Just like in the first game, if you spectralize a weapon, 3/5ths of its old stats carry into the spectralization. If that doesn't make sense now, don't worry. It will soon enough. :> Dark Chronicle received a 35/40 rating by the Weekly Famitsu, Japan's premier gaming magazine. What that means is that the Japanese critics think this game is really good. You WILL agree with these critics when you experience the graphics and gameplay yourself. And now, onto the guide... ________________________________________________________________________ / \ dc_faq \ | 2 | Frequently Asked Questions | \___/____________________________________________________________________/ Warning - there are some small spoilers in this section. ====================================== General Queries about the Game & Guide ====================================== Q1) Is this game out yet? A1) It is in Japan, and was released in the U.S. and Canada on February 19th, 2003. I have no idea when it will be released in Europe. Sony excluded me at their last meeting, you see... Q2) Do I need to have played Dark Cloud I first? A2) Nope. The references in Dark Cloud II to Dark Cloud I are much the same as the references between Final Fantasy IV to Final Fantasy X - recurring motifs like Atla and the cloaked lunar characters, familiar enemies, and a VERY familiar boss or two. Q3) How much memory space does this game take up? A3) The game itself takes 499 KB per save file. An Omake Game Save File takes up 129 KB, while an Album save file takes up 487 KB. It probably wouldn't hurt to get an extra memory card just for this game. Q4) You keep mentioning 'gaijin protection'. What's that? A4) 'Gaijin protection' is the commonly accepted term for 'protecting' a Japanese game from being played by a foreigner (gaijin) before its stateside release. More specifically, it refers to a language barrier in the game that would pose little problem for a native Japanese speaker, but would be virtually impossible for a person with little to no knowledge of Japanese to force their way through. The main instances are the three times in the game where you have to enter passwords: to get Mayor Need, Rosa, and to battle the 'final' boss at the end of chapter 7. Q5) Have you beaten the game? A5) Yes, I beat the game back in January. Therefore, it's very safe of me to assume that I have more experience with this game than you do, despite this guide not being done yet. Q6) When are you going to finish the guide? Are you going to finish the guide? A6) Five seconds later from when I originally hoped to thanks to that question. Thanks muchly. And yes, this guide WILL be finished. I'm working on it as fast as I can. Q7) Did you make up these questions? A7) A couple of them, but many of them were gleaned from the message boards on GameFaqs and from various emails I've received. =========================================== Mechanics & Bugs Frequently Asked Questions =========================================== Q1) Do weapons still break? A1) Yes, just not permanently as in Dark Cloud 1. Next question. Q2) Can I change Yuris/Max's name? A2) No. The game's VA depends on it your character having one name. Level 5 was kind enough not to pull a FFX-style Tidus on us. Q3) How do I unlock the ??? marks that cover up some of the medal conditions when you're examining a dungeon floor's information? A3) The two conditions that are being covered up are Spheeda and Fishing, which will be unlocked as you pass certain sections of the game automatically. Q4) My game screwed up! This floor genned without an exit! A4) In that case, better pray that you have Escape Powder, because otherwise you will be sacrificing half your gold to escape the dungeon via the Move command in the Main Menu if you haven't cleared out all of the enemies. :> Q5) What do the little dots next to Monica's weapon stand for? A5) Those dots stand for her Absorption Magic meter, and you begin getting them after Monica's weapon reaches a certain strength (still working on the precise formula for this being set into action...) If an enemy does a ranged magic attack, like a fireball, have Monica block. The meter will go up by one. While guarding, you can throw back at the enemy the magic you've absorbed by tapping the L1 button. You can only store one elemental type at a time. For example, if a holy attack comes your way after you've absorbed four fireballs, if you guard, you will lose all of your fire attacks and instead have one holy attack stored. The maximum number of these dots that you can have, ever, is seven. Q6) How should I level up my weapons? A6) I hope to have a guide for those weapons up as soon as I have my weapon chart complete to the point that I feel it is presentable. Until then, I refer you to GameFAQs excellent Weaponry chart written up by Bansama. Q7) If I have pictures saved in my Album, can I load them into another game and avoid the trouble of having to get them as Scoops again? A7) Yes, and no - you can load them into a new game for use in creating Inventions, but they will not count towards your Photographing Skill score. Thus, in each new game you still should take the photographs, but you can get the jump on having weapons of awesome power for Ridepod and yourself way earlier in the game than you rightfully should. Q8) Why do the fish suddenly have passwords? Did the programmers screw up? A8) Y...no! Much as I'd like to take a giggle at them, the Password feature on fish shows up around chapter 4 or thereabouts, after the activation of the Fish Races in the Omake (Bonus) menu on the main screen, and is entirely intentional. That way, you can take fish data from your main game and use them in the Omake (Omake is Japanese for 'Bonus') Fish Races. Q9) What are Scoops good for, anyways? Aren't they pretty pointless? A9) Getting tons of cool items and the rarest and coolest Inventions. Beyond that, nah, you don't need them. :P Q10) How do I put stuff into the Gift Capsule? How do I get new monster badges? A10) Select the item that you want to stuff into the capsule, then press Square. You should pick up the item. After that, move the item over the gift capsule, then press Square or X (Circle for Japanese players) to insert the item. If you've chosen the right stuff, when you toss the gift capsule at a monster, it will have a musical note pop up above its head. After that, whack the snot out of it, and if it's a member of a monster family that you don't have a badge for, you'll get the monster. Q11) How do I get item for creating Georama parts? (ex. Logs, any sort of Element, Clay, whatever) A11) After the middle of Chapter II, Conda will join your group as an NPC. Though he will not join your party if you ask him to (bugger them Elves), he WILL sell you every single Georama part that you'll need to build the Georama areas in the game. He's pretty spiffy like that. ================ Walkthrough FAQs ================ Q1) I missed Linda and Halloween's Scoops! Can I go back and get them? A1) Nope. If you want the credit for the scoops, you will have to restart the game. If you simply want the ideas for them for Inventions, you will have to start a new game, get the pictures, get to Chapter 2, get the Album, and then go back to your original game and load the ideas over. Q2) How do I get past the fishing hole area in Chapter 2? A2) First, you need to put an Rotting Apple at the end of your fishing line, then fling it into the big lake in the middle. When you feel tugging, gently push your Left Analog stick forward, and you'll automatically catch a fish, Emperor Mardan. Afterwards, you'll wish you hadn't. When you have done that, listen to it, then go fishing using the Mimis you've gotten by this point (if you don't have any bait, re-go through some of the earlier floors in the Seven-Colored Butterfly Forest until you get some) for a small fish called a Haguhagu. Give this to Emperor Mardan using the Square button. Tadaaa. Q3) Where do I get a monster badge from? A3) The first monster badge you can get, the Himarra badge, is sold at the Tailor Shop. Complete the Georama in Chapter 2 as far as you can with the clues given (or just glance up above at the Georama Chapter 2 section). It will cost you 400 Gold to get one. To get others, look at the above Mechanics Questions, #10. Q4) How do I get Jurak's Branch to appear in Chapter 2's Georama? A4) Plant at least 10 trees (the Jurak trees count), and build 15 units of fencing around the house of the Little People. The ??? marks are deliberately there at this point in the game in your Georama instruction list - this is NOT an error. They are normally not visible until Chapter 6. Q5) Q5) How do I enter the room to the final boss in Chapter 7? A5) For those of you playing the American version of the game, enter in Emperor Griffon's name, which they will have told you over and over and over again during the course of Chapter 7. In the English version, I believe that the name is Sirus. For those of you playing the Japanese version of the game, I can definitively tell you that Griffon's true name is San, so enter that in katakana. For those of you are who are extremely Japanese-challenged and cannot muster even that, when you're on the default input screen and select first the first character on the third row, then the sixth character on the fifth row to write the following (sans brackets): 『サン』。 Q6) Why are bunnies in this series associated with being on the moon? A6) Bunnies in Japanese culture have always been associated with the moon, so Level 5 was just following suit. Whereas in western culture we have the Man in the Moon, the Japanese have a Rabbit on the Moon making mochi, a rice-based treat eaten around New Years'. ________________________________________________________________________ / \ dc_howto \ | 3 | How to Play | \___/____________________________________________________________________/ Story -------------- dc_story Start -------------- dc_start Controls ----------- dc_cont Menu --------------- dc_menu Item Menu ---------- dc_imen Character Menu ----- dc_chmn Creation Menu ------ dc_tskr Dungeons ----------- dc_fight For further information on Georama, weapons, inventions, item usage, transformations, minigames, and pretty much everything else not listed immediately above, refer to the Table of Contents at the top. ============================================================================ Story dc_story ============================================================================ This story is translated from the first couple of pages of the Japanese instruction booklet. Enjoy. :> ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- There once was a town, near a mine, named Palm Brinks. Within its closed and hardened gates flows a calm air of peace and harmony. From here begins the story of one boy and one young girl, spanning across the past and the future. Yuris, our hero who works at Cedric's Repair Shop in Palm Brinks, has never set foot outside of town, but he someday wants to journey to the outside world. His wish is about to be granted... Outside of his town, Yuris meets our other hero, Monica. Thanks to a mysterious being known only as Emperor Griffon, Monica's world, one hundred years in the future, has been introduced to terrible weapons of destruction. Monica, a member of the Resistance opposing Emperor Griffon, turned to Yuris's age for a solution. Thus, they now go to change the flow of history, in order to make a world that can fight off Emperor Griffon's power. Yuris and Monica, overlapping the past and future, shall begin to move the world to a new history. Yuris: 13 year old boy. The sole son of a wealthy millionaire, he has a genius level IQ. He loves fixing EVERYTHING, and presently works at Cedric's shop. Monica: 15 year old girl. She comes to Yuris's era from a world 100 years in the future. She is masterful with a sword, and she also wields magical attacks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ============================================================================ Beginning the Game dc_start ============================================================================ At the Title screen, when you press the Start button, the Title Menu will be displayed. Use the Direction Keypad to make a selection, then press the Circle button to confirm it. Your options are: ****************** From the Beginning - This option starts your game from the beginning. After ****************** you choose Yuris's costume, the game begins. Note that your choice of Yuris's costume has no impact on the game itself. None. The temptation to start rumors otherwise is strong, but it really has no effect except for subtly altering how you look at Yuris. ******** Continue - If you've previously saved a game on a PlayStation II 8MB Memory ******** Card, you can restart from that previous save by selecting this option. You'll need 499 MB free on your memory card for a single game save file. ***** Omake - After you've advanced through the game, you can do assorted things ***** here, such as playing various minigames. The only mini-game that you can do for a long time, and only after Chapter 4(?) or so, is fish-racing; after Chapter 7, Spheeda is added. ******* Options - Alters the various optional settings for the game: ******* Cursor: Sets whether or not the Cursor recalls its last position. Vibration: Turns the Analog Controller's vibration option on/off. Message Speed: Select the message speed of your choice. Sound: Toggles between Stereo and Mono Sound. Time Passage: Controls how fast time passes in the game itself. Map Display: Toggles between the three map options (none, small, full) in the dungeons. Damage Point: Toggles whether or not Damage numbers are shown. Enemy HP Display: Toggles whether or not Enemy HP is shown. Rage Counter: Toggles the display of an enemy's Rage Meter. Name Display: Whether or not the character's name is shown. Monster Name Display: Whether or not a monster's name is shown. Fade Distance: Toggles something. Subtitles: Turns the subtitles on and off. Pause Display: Toggles the darkening of the screen and display of "Pause" when the game is paused. ******* Install - If you happen to have a PlayStation 2 HDD, you can use this to ******* speed up the loadtimes of Dark Chronicle. According to people on the GameFAQs message boards, the speed up is quite significant in cutting down on floor loadtimes. If you don't have it, don't worry too much; the only time it ever takes the game to really load anything is when it's generating a given dungeon floor. ============================================================================ Controls dc_cont ============================================================================ In the Japanese version of the game, the Circle button is Confirm, the X button is Cancel, and the Triangle button is 'menu.' In the United States, the X button is Confirm, and the Circle button is Cancel. Why gaming companies insist upon this continued flip-flop of commands is beyond me, since the time could be better handled on other adjustments, but hey... The control convention below is from the Japanese version of the game. *************** Normal Commands *************** Circle/X = Attack. The basic attack versus an enemy using your melee weapon. Outside of dungeons, this button is used for opening doors, talking to people, and in general confirming commands. X/Circle = Target. Allows you to target an enemy. Pressing back and X again will allow you to disengage from the target. Outside of dungeons, this button is used to negate commands. Square Button = Use the item selected on the upper left side of your screen in a dungeon. If in a normal area, brings up the camera screen. Triangle Button = Bring up the Main Menu. L1 Button = Pressing and holding this allows you to use your ranged weapon. While holding it down, press the Attack button to fire either Yuris's gun or Monica's magic. R1 Button = Guard. This allows you to guard yourself against your enemies. While in guard mode, you can also go up to an enemy or object and, by pressing the Attack button against them, lift them off of the ground. L2 Button = Resets the camera's position to your Hero's POV. R2 Button = Switches you to free view camera mode, allowing you to panoramically look around the area. L3 Button = Allows you to switch between Yuris and Monica without having to go into the Character Menu. R3 Button = Allows you to switch between Yuris and Ridepod, or Monica and her last monster transformation. Cannot be used to switch between various monster transformations, or between any other pairs other than those two, as illustrated by the following diagram: Yuris--------R3--------Ridepod | | L3 | | Monica-------R3--------Monster - Note: The L3 and R3 'buttons' are depressing the Left and Right Analog sticks, respectively. Direction Pad = Up/Down are not used. Left/Right switches which item the Square button is selected to. To change what items are being used, go into the Item Menu (Triangle for Menu, select Item, press Circle). Left Analog Stick = Moves your character. Right Analog Stick = Rotates the viewpoint around your main character. Left turns the screen counterclockwise, while right turns it clockwise. Start - Pauses the game. Select - Only used in the dungeon to flip flop between the various maps. ******************** Special Combat Moves ******************** ---------------------------- Consecutive Attacks (連続技) ---------------------------- Repeated presses of the Attack Button will allow you to do a string of attacks upon a single enemy with your right hand weapon, getting progressively more powerful. At the 5th or 6th attack, you will typically do a finishing strike, knocking the enemy in question to the ground. The style and number of slices in your consecutive attacks varies very slightly with each individual weapon. ------------------------- Charged Attack (ため攻撃) ------------------------- If you hold your Attack button, be it with or without the L1 button, you will start charging your power for a devastating attack. Note that you cannot charge Yuris's projectile weapon. --------------------- Final Blow (追い討ち) --------------------- While locked on to an enemy, if you press towards the enemy and tap the Attack button, you'll do a flying leap at them for an incredibly strong attack. -------------------- Back Flip (バック転) -------------------- While locked on to an enemy, if you press away from the enemy and tap the Attack button, you'll do a flying backflip, giving you some distance away from the enemy. While airborne, you're immune to any sort of damage. ----------------------------------- Absorption Magic Sword (吸収魔法剣) ----------------------------------- This is the one ability that the instruction booklet doesn't mention, and it's available to Monica only. "What is an absorption?" you may ask. An absorption is where you successfully block a magical ranged attack from an enemy, such as a fireball. As you progress through the game and level up Monica, Monica's swords will start gaining little dots next to her sword icon in the upper part of your screen when battling through dungeons. These stand for the number of slots that she has available for Magic Absorption. After you've successfully absorbed an attack by guarding with the R1 button, continue to hold down the R1 button and tap the L1 button to return the enemy's attack. The more of her magic absorption slots that are filled, the stronger the attack. The number of little dots next to her sword are solely dependent on the strength of her weapon. The minimum number of dots once they start to appear is one, and the maximum number of dots is seven. Note that you can only absorb one 'type' of element at a time - otherwise your absorption meter resets. For example, if you absorb five fireballs, if an enemy with a holy attack hits you, you will lose all five fireballs and have one holy absorbtion stored. ============================================================================ Menu dc_menu ============================================================================ Pressing the Triangle Button when on the field map or in a dungeon will bring up the Main Menu. It's incredibly straightforward, so I'm just going to do quickie translations of everything: アイテム - Item - Brings up the Item Menu キャラクター - Character - Brings up the Character Selection Screen. つくる - Make - Allows you to create inventions. いどう - Move - Allows you to move to different areas, and between towns and dungeons. オプション - Options - Allows you to toggle through the Options listed above in the Start Menu. ヘルプ - Help - Allows you to access a number of movies explaining various aspects of the game. As you progress through the game, more explanatory movies are made available. ============================================================================ Item Menu dc_imen ============================================================================ If you choose 'Item' from the Main Menu, the Item Menu screen shall appear. +--------------------------------------------------+ | Active Items Gold | | o o o +---------------------+ | | Items in your | | Character | Inventory | | Picture | 19 rows * 6 columns | | | = 114 types of | | | items total | | Character's Name Shield +---------------------+ +----------------------------+---------------------+ | HP Meter | Description of | +----------------------------| the item presently | | Melee Weapon | selected by your | | Ranged Weapon | cursor | +----------------------------+---------------------+ If there's a small shield alone in the main section (upper left region) of the Item Menu screen, the number next to the shield indicates either Yuris's or Monica's defense. If there's a small shield with 'core' (コア) written next to it, then that indicates the defensive level of Ridepod's core. If it has 'body' (ボディ) next to it, then it indicates Ridepod's body's defense. Most of the items have at least two options: Spectralize, or transforming items into spectral items for weapon absorbtion, and Drop. Weapons, on the other hand, have the following additions: Equip, Repair, Status. ============================================================================ Character Menu dc_chmn ============================================================================ In the Character Menu, you get the option of switching to one of three (or fifteen, depending on your reckoning) characters. The screen is set up approximately like this: +----------------------------------------------+ | | | Monster | | Transformation ---Yuris | | \ / \ | | \ / \ | | \ / Ridepod | | Monica | | | | | | NPC | | | +----------------------------------------------+ The NPC cannot be selected as a playable character. The NPC is purely there to provide support to your main set of characters. To see/use the NPC's special abilities, move your cursor on to that person's picture and press the Confirm button. Ridepod will join your party halfway through chapter one, and Monica will join your party at the beginning of chapter two. You will get access to NPCs at the beginning of chapter 2 as well, and you will gain access to your first Monster Transformation in the middle of chapter 3. ============================================================================ Creation Menu dc_tskr ============================================================================ The newest major addition to the Dark Cloud series, a feature that wasn't available in Dark Cloud I, is the addition of the Invention system, accessed by the 'Make' menu on your main screen. Yuris, being an mechanical genius, has the ability to analyze ideas from pictures and to come up with new and fantastic inventions. Via this system, you can create upgrades for Ridepod, create rare and fantastic items, and even aquariums to stick your favorite fish in for viewing at any time. To come up with your blueprints for a given creation, you must do the following four steps: 1) Take lots of pictures of stuff. 2) Enter the Creation Menu. Use the Square button to select three pictures or ideas that you wish to use. 3) Press the Confirm button. Cross your fingers. 4) Hopefully, your idea will result in the blueprints for an item. Otherwise, you'll be told by the game that your idea was totally wrong, or that you got one part incorrect. In the latter case, you will be given a hint as to what that remaining part could be. For example, if the one remaining idea you need is a picture of a manhole, you will be a given a clue something like "ma**ole". A full invention list is in the process of being translated now from Japanese from the Weekly Famitsu's January 31st issue. ============================================================================ Dungeons dc_fight ============================================================================ It should go without say that a role-playing game's dungeons are its bread and butter, and Dark Cloud is no exception to this rule. Each dungeon in Dark Cloud is randomly generated around the basic requirement of acquiring an item, a "gate key", to move on to the next floor. What this gate key is is dependent upon what dungeon you're in at the time. Regardless, the method of getting it is the same - kill the enemies on the floor until one of them drops the Gate Key. More often than not, the strongest sort of enemy on that floor will have said Key. As you work your way through the dungeon, the game automatically generates a map for you. You can toggle through the various levels of this map either in the Option menu (painful and laborious) or by pressing the Select Button (nice and easy). A general legend to your map: Large Green Dot: Floor Entrance Large Yellow Dot: Floor Exit Yellow Dot: Treasure Chest/Mimic (you don't know which until you open it!) Strong Yellow Dot: Coin Spot Purple Dot: Geostone Red Dot: Enemy Question Mark: Healing Spring For your reference, all floors are noted in the following format: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floor # (A) - Japanese Title (B) FLOOR TYPE (C) Translation (D) dc_X-XX (E) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Medal Conditions (F) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Georama Supplies: (G) Enemies: (H) Spheeda Prizes: (J) Geostone: (K) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> A) Floor # = The Dungeon and Room Number. For dungeons with multiple paths, the earlier room number is the one 'off the beaten path', so to speak. B) Japanese Title = The title of the floor in Japanese. C) Floor Type = On about 60% of the floors, this space will be left blank. The remaining 40% will have one of these notes about the floor: 1) RED SEAL - You cannot use Ridebot or Yuris on this floor. This limitation is broken if you defeat all the enemies on the floor. 2) BLUE SEAL - You cannot use Monica or any of her transformations on this floor. This limitation is broken if you defeat all the enemies on the floor. 3) WHITE SEAL - You cannot use status recovery or healing items on this floor. Note that you can, thankfully, repair your weapons, use healing springs, and recover hit points via a weapon infused with Drain or Slow Heal. This limitation is broken if you defeat all the enemies on the floor. 4) SPECIAL - No enemies on this floor. You generally gain some sort of item on this floor, though not always. 5) BOSS - There's a boss here. Duhhh. 6) FORK - This floor has two exits. The exits are typically marked by a sign that notates where the exit leads to - a sun sign, a moon sign, or a star sign. Star Sign paths are generally blocked until Chapter 6 in the game. Any floor with a Star Sign Fork will have an * in front of the word "FORK". 7) X-XX ???? FORK - This room forks from the room number listed in front. For example, 8-18 SUN FORK means that this room is where you end up if you take the Sun Exit at Floor 8-18. D) Translation = Precisely what it says. For now, the floors are listed with my translation of the Japanese floor title, which may or may not correspond exactly with the English floor title. E) dc_x-xx = The Find hotkey combination for that floor. F) Medal Conditions = These are the things that you need to do in order to get medals. Medals are your badge of honor to show that you are a great player of Dark Chronicle. Beyond that, later in the game, you can exchange the medals for special limited edition clothing that you can get nowhere else. These are all the possible conditions (in translation): 1) Limit Time for killing all enemies - XX:XX minutes. This means, naturally, that you have to defeat all the enemies, Mimics and all. As soon as you defeat all the enemies, immediately after you get the message on your screen stating, "Monster Annihilation!", you will learn whether or not you made it within the time limit. You can kill them via whatever method you see fit. Opening treasure chests will count into your final time. 2) Spheeda (Sphere Golfing) After you've killed off all enemies on a given floor, once you've passed a certain point in the game, you will be able to play a game of Spheeda, or Sphere Golfing. If you get rid of the Black Hole using the Spheroid Shard (or, in normal English, whack the ball properly through the goal), you will get good treasure (Gems, Level-up Powder, Stamina Potions) in addition to getting a medal. What a deal! You will be able to start playing Spheeda towards the end of Chapter 3. Before you get there, though, all the Spheeda conditions will show up as ??? marks. 3) Fishing After you've killed off all of the enemies, catch a fish on that floor with a length greater than whatever length the floor statistic screen specifies. Very straight forward. You will get your fishing pole to fish in the middle of Chapter 2. Before you get there, all the fishing conditions will show up as ??? marks. 4) Annihilate all enemies without healing yourself. No using any curative items on yourself or on Ridepod. No having NPCs heal you. Any HP you gain from Drain or Slow-Healing imbued weapons, however, is a-ok and legal. 5) Annihilate all enemies with items. Just what it says - kill all enemies by using items. You are not permitted to use any weapon attacks from any of your characters (Ridepod's attack does not count as an item attack, for instance), but you are allowed to pick up crates/rocks and use those to kill enemies. Random Elf has contributed the following advice regarding defeating item floors, which I shall paraphrase: Eric's bombs ROCK. To defeat one of these floors, have him create 20 of his bombs (figure about one floor per recharge of his skill points). Have him recharge once, There is evidence out there Monica's Absorption Sword attack does not count as any sort of attack type - item, sword, or otherwise. An enemy killed with this attack produces general experience rather than experience for either just your ranged or melee weapon for Monica. 6) Annihilate all enemies | with Yuris's gun. | with Yuris's right hand weapon. | with Monica's sword. | with Monica's magic. | with Ridepod. | as a Monster. You must defeat the enemies using only the above weapon/character. This does not translate to merely do the last hit for each enemy with that particular weapon - no, it means that EVERY SINGLE attack you do on that floor to an enemy MUST be with that weapon. You are also prohibited from using item attacks on any enemy. G) Georama Supplies = All of the possible Georama Supplies that you can obtain on this floor. You can obtain this information on a floor by selecting the floor, pressing Circle (X in the U.S.), then pressing Triangle. Note that some floors do not generate Georama supplies in treasure chests, and hence do not have this feature. H) Enemies = The enemies on the floor. Unlike the layout of floors, what monsters are on a given floor are FIXED. Later versions of this guide may go so far as to how many of each enemy are on each floor, since that also seems to be predetermined. I) Geostone = What the Geostone, if a floor actually has a Geostone, provides you on that floor. J) Known Spheeda Prizes = What prizes I've been able to pick up in Spheeda games on that particular floor. The prizes are indeed from a predetermined list, and are not random. Repeat instances of winning Spheeda on the same floor result in a lesser prize. ________________________________________________________________________ / \ dc_walk \ | 4 | Walkthrough | \___/____________________________________________________________________/ The moment you've all been waiting for - the walkthrough of the game! If you need any specific help with the Georama sections of the game, you will NOT find information for that in this Walkthrough section. To get to a particular floor, go to the dungeon map, look for the given floor number you want, then use CTRL+F to get to where you want to go. Fiddle around with it for a bit - you get an initial three choices for each of his clothes, hats, and shoes. After you have done that, you will jump straight into playing Monica for a short amount of time. If you peek on your subscreen (by pressing Triangle), and go to the Character menu, you can read the following info about Monica: Monica: Princess of the Kingdom of Lebrante. Adept with swords. Monica's initial equipment will be a Kingdom Sword and her Magic Armband. It's a shame you lose the Kingdom Sword after this fight, though -- it's nicer than what she'll eventually truly start out with. The game will immediately explain in brief her controls. If you peeked above at the explanation for the controls, you would've seen it, but if not, here they are AGAIN: Circle: Attack. Holding the button for a moment and releasing it will perform a charged attack. R1: Guard. X: Lock-on command. L1 + Circle: Magic Attack. You have to hold the L1 button. Note that you will move around far more slowly while it's depressed. You will have to immediately battle off four Griffon Army Soldiers. These folks require no special strategy - just press the X button to lock on to them, then whack them as quickly as possible. The only thing that you have to watch out for is getting pincered by two or more of them. **************************************************************************** Palm Brinks - Hot Circus Nights dc_cir **************************************************************************** After this scene, you will switch to Yuris, and you'll immediately see that Yuris is ready and raring to go to the Porcus Circus. First, though, you need to do your day's work for Cedric. Before you sit down and get started, go all the way to the bottom of the lab, and pick up the Memo Book on top of the table. (You should see a big exclamation mark by Yuris's head before you do so -- when that happens, that means that you can investigate that area to do something.) Search the cabinet to get your trusty Wrench. Your inventory beyond those two items, incidentally, is as follows: 1 - Circus Ticket 3 - Gun Repair Powder 1 - Medal Holder 3 - Tasty Water 5 - Fluffy Bread 2 - Antidote Drink 3 - Repair Powder Take a quick moment to go back upstairs to the big red sphere thing, and save your game. Look at the object on the desk against the top wall on the middle floor, select the first choice, then sit back and watch a few scenarios. When you once again can control Yuris, chew the fat with the clown. Press the Square button when prompted, and then select the Circus Ticket (the Grey rectangular item. If you haven't messed around with your inventory at all yet, it will be the first item.) When you give it to him, a little red-haired kid in rags will run by and steal it. Follow him, talking first to the couple underneath the parasol, than the old lady in front of the town hall. Remember, it's rude to talk to people from behind. (Hint, hint.) Continue running counterclockwise, then talk to the little girl in front of the lamppost. You'll get your ticket back afterwards. Go talk to the clown, and give him your ticket for real. After the next scenes, you will have to fight four Clowns. Come on, what did you expect from a circus troupe that dubs themselves the Porcus Circus -- good guys? (Well, you probably expected pigs...) Bash the Clowns with your Wrench - they're pathetically easy - but be wary about letting them corner you. After the fight is over, your Wrench will be confirmed to be a "Battle Wrench", and you will be able to use it henceforth as a weapon instead of a mere tool for fixing stuff. Feel powerful now, doncha? Sit back, watch a few scenarios, and enjoy the formulaic opening song in heavily accented English that signals that your adventure has begun. :> ----------------------------------------------- Opening Theme: Time is changing - Short Version ----------------------------------------------- Lyrics: Mike Reagan Music: Tomohito Nishiura Singer: Chidai Yano I'll take my chances, racing time. We're writing for the book for all to see. On my own, I can ride the winds of the day. To heal the broken time, broken world. In the dark, a candle is the sun. To light our way back home. It's a dream, it's a hope, that one day we'll be free. Give me strength to open up the door! Only the strong ones can stand the test of time, Falling between these two worlds, finding the way. The sun will rise, to piece this hope, When this wonderful world starts to shine. When this wonderful world starts to shine... After the sequence is over, save, then talk to Donny. Select the second choice. Donny will give you the Help Receiver and your very first gun, the Classic Shot. Thus ends the prologue, and now your adventure truly begins - in the depths of the sewers beneath Palm Brinks. ========\ /========= \ / /=======================================================\ ========= Chapter 1 - 外の世界へ - To the Outside World! ========== \=======================================================/ / \ dc_chap1 ========/ \========= Finally, what all Dark Cloud games are about - the dungeons and getting STUFF! Press the Confirm button to look a particular floor's information. Press it again if you want to go on in. Press the Cancel button to cancel that selection. Once you have cleared a floor, after you initially press Circle, you can press the Triangle button to see what Georama supplies you can get on that floor (if any). Once you complete the first floor, you also get the option of saving with the Triangle button, or leaving the dungeon altogether with the Square button. For specific information on how each floor is annotated, please go back up and look in the Dungeon section at the beginning of this guide. Aiming for the Outside World! dc_1-01 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> - Limit time for enemy annihilation - 2:35 - Sphere Golfing - Annihilate all enemies without healing yourself. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Georama Supplies: NONE Enemies: Clown Solider (ピエロ兵), Frogger (フロッガー), Sewer Rat (ドブチュー) Spheeda Prize: 2 Treasure Keys, 2 Resurrection Powder >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> As soon as you enter the area, Donny calls you on the Help Receiver. He will explain what you need to do to advance in every dungeon. The select button provides an ongoing map of the floor. Pressing it switches you from no map to mini-map to full-sized map. To finish each floor, you must obtain a "Gate Key", which for this dungeon is a small handcrank wheel, then use that item by pressing the Square button when you reach the actual exit (denoted by a large yellow spot on your map) and see a big Exclamation Point appear. When you're through, explore a bit. Go up against one of the crates, and learn all about throwing them. Hold the R1 button, press the Attack button to pick it up, then tap it again when you want to throw it. When you are done with the area, you will see a short scenario about Yuris. You may want to take a moment, rummage and admire your new things, then go back outside of the dungeon (press the Square button on the main dungeon screen). Now that you have money from killing some enemies, talk to Donny at his place to buy some items. I highly recommend purchasing the Scoop Memo book for usage on the next level, though you can wait a short while before doing this activity. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floor 1-2 - ねずみたちとの戦い Attack of the Rats! dc_1-02 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> - Limit time for enemy annihilation - 2:40 - Sphere Golfing - Annihilate all enemies with items. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Georama Supplies: Bones, Metal Scraps, Copper Lumps, Thick Leather Enemies: Clown Soldier, Frogger, Sewer Rat, Balloon Baron (風船男爵), Bat (コ ウモリ) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The enemies on this floor are much the same as the last one. Donny will make another call in via the Help Receiver, noting that you need to make your weapon stronger to help yourself against the ever-increasing strength of your enemies as you advance further in the dungeon. This floor also presents your very first Scoop Opportunity, though you won't be able to get it until you get your Camera once you start the next floor. If you were clever enough to buy a Scoop Book like I suggested (hint hint), entry number seven the book mentions Nightstalkers, which you initially encounter on this floor. If you take a picture of a Nightstalker while it's performing its spinning attack, you will be able to show it to Donny later in the game to get some awesome items. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floor 1-4 - 地下水道.ポンプ室 BOSS Underground Water Supply - Pump Room dc_1-04 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> When you enter here, you will watch a short scenario, and encounter the subboss for this dungeon: Circus Star Attraction サーカス団のアイドル Linda! リンダちゃん Attack her once or twice, note that your attacks really have no effect, then keep your distance until Yuris realizes that his moves had as much effect as anyone trying to convince George Lucas to stop directing Star Wars movies. You'll be thrust into a scenario where you will be introduced to your Ridepod, Steve, built by Cedric. You'll get to return back to the upper world of Palm Brinks at this point. **************************************************************************** Palm Brinks w_palm **************************************************************************** To repair Steve, you have to come up with a way to create a suitable power pack. Cedric will give you the Camera, and will explain to you now about the Hatsumei (発明), or Invention, system. (You can see a further explanation in Section 6D of this guide, which discusses Inventions). When he's done, go outside and take a snapshot of the following items: ベルト = Belt. Take an extreme closeup of Sheriff Barker's belt during the daytime. 牛乳缶 = Milk Cans. Located outside of the bakery, where Polly works. + パイプ = Pipes. Take a picture of the pipes on top of Cedric's Repair Shop. --------------------------- バックパック = Backpack! If after several photos you still cannot get the item created, go back to Cedric's Shop and talk to Cedric again. He will show you the locations you need to take shots at in order to create your backpack. To actually make your backpack, you will need 20 Metal Scraps, 1 Thick Leather, and 2 Copper Lumps. Since you will most likely not yet have 20 Metal Scraps, consider yourself fortunate in that you can also now access several shops within Palm Brinks. Go to Mouton's shop, which is left of Polly's Bakery and has the pumpkins in front of it, and plunk down 10 Gold per piece of scrap metal, then go into the Make menu and finish it up. Before you go back to talk to Cedric after you've built your backpack, go back into the Entrance to the sewers where Donny is and look around the center lever to find a small treasure chest containing a helpful Eden Fruit. Eden Fruits are items that when used raise Yuris's or Monica's maximum Hit Points by 8 - helpful things indeed! You will learn here how to ride Steve -- to select Ridepod in the dungeons, either go to the Character menu and select Steve, or press R3 (press in the Right Analog Stick) as Yuris to switch over. When you're ready to go into the dungeon, talk to Cedric one more time, and he'll ask if you're ready. Say 'OK!' if you are, or select the bottom one if you aren't. **************************************************************************** Underground Sewers - Reprise dc_sewer **************************************************************************** Circus Star Attraction サーカス団のアイドル Linda! リンダちゃん This boss is pathetically easy, but you need to do one thing before you kill it - namely, get a picture of it for Donny's Scoops. The shot you need to get of Linda is her lifting her front feet in preparation for her stomp shock wave attack. Note that this is the ONLY CHANCE IN THE GAME (I could probably emphasize that more, but you get the picture, no pun intended...) to get that photo. Oh, what the hell. **************************************************************************** THIS IS THE ONLY CHANCE IN THE GAME TO GET THE PHOTO OF LINDA! **************************************************************************** There. You've been warned. If you're a completionist and you missed this, you can reset your game now, thx. However, you've read this guide, and now you're definitely going to get it, right? Right. When you've gotten your picture of Linda, switch to Ridepod and pound away at Linda. There's no real strategy that can be written for this - because you don't need a real strategy to defeat it! Linda will go down in only a few hits, and she doesn't do damage to Ridepod fast enough for you to have to worry about being killed. After she's dead, go to the door directly opposite the stairs. When you leave the area, you'll see a scenario of a discussion between the Mayor and Cedric. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floor 1-5 - スティーブの闘い Steve's Battle! dc_1-05 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Medal Conditions: - Limit time for enemy annihilation - 2:45 - Sphere Golfing - Annihilate all enemies using Ridepod. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Georama Supplies: Bones, Metal Scraps, Copper Lumps, Thick Leather Enemies: Bat, Clown, Nightstalker, Mimic (ミミック), Vanguard (ヴァンガード) (200 HP) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is the first floor where you'll experience the wonders of Mimics. Mimics, as every veteran RPG player knows, are enemies that look like treasure chests but really aren't. They are fairly easy to take out if you run around behind them and whack them with your melee weapon repeatedly. As long as you make sure that you aren't directly in front of them, they and their larger cousins on the next floor, King Mimics, will be quite simple to eliminate. Note that Mimics DO count into your medal enemy annihilation requirements, so on any floors that have Mimics, do take a moment to pop open every single chest. The Vanguards on this floor and the next one have to be defeated by using Ridepod's weapons. When Yuris is much much stronger, you won't have to switch over, but for now you do. Note that the Vanguards have three attacks: an attack where their pistons shoot at you, a spinning attack, and an attack where they rise up on their pistons like stilts, then fall back down for a slam. Take a picture of this last attack for the second and last of the regular enemy-type scoops for this dungeon. When this floor is completed, you will see the end of the conversation between the Mayor and Cedric. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floor 1-6 - 甘くて怖い宝箱 Sweet, Scary Treasure Boxes dc_1-06 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Medal Conditions: - Limit time for enemy annihilation - 2:30 - Sphere Golfing - Annihilate all enemies with Yuris's right hand weapon. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Georama Supplies: Bones, Metal Scraps, Copper Lumps, Thick Leather Enemies: Frogger, Vanguard, King Mimic (キングミミック), Yamitch (ヤミッチ) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Before you go to the last boss, leave the dungeon. When you've got the photograph, switch to Ridepod, and clanker straight for his face and pound away. Save JUST IN CASE, then go outside and fight the boss. ARMED BUGGY 武装バギー P-3000 All you need to do is throw three bombs by pressing the Circle button at the Armed Buggy to defeat it. To pick one up, turn around and face Cedric, then while holding the R1 button, press the Circle button. Throw the bombs at the Armed Buggy as if it was a stationary target, and you should have absolutely no problems with this boss at all. Any sort of hit is a full hit in this fight. After this battle, Monica will join your party, and that more or less ends the chapter. There's some other piddly minor stuff, but I'll just save it for the beginning of the next chapter below. ========\ /========= \ / /=======================================================\ ========= Chapter 2 - よみがえる大長老 - The Reborn Great Elder ========== \=======================================================/ / \ dc_chap2 ========/ \========= This chapter starts out with - you guessed it - scenario sequences with Monica explaining more about what's going on. When she's done talking, you will get five Ring Repairs, and given instructions on how to switch to her whenever you're going through the game. This is done by either going into the Main Menu, selecting 'Character', then selecting Monica, or by pressing the L3 'button' - pressing in the Left Analog Stick. Note that you can do this WHENEVER Monica is with you, inside the dungeon or out. When you stop outside of the train, you'll also gain the ability to put NPCs into your party by just going up and talking to them. These NPCs are further described in the NPC section, but suffice it to say that the only decent one to take along with you for now is Cedric, as he possesses the ability to repair Steve while you're journeying through the dungeon. However, Eric is an incredibly worthwhile NPC thanks to his ability to create bombs. Each use of his special ability allows you to create 3 Bombs worth 500 Gold apiece. If you find yourself scrapped for cash at this point in the game, have him join your party, use his abilities from the character menu, then kick him out again for Cedric until some time has elapsed. After a certain duration of time, his ability to affect your weapons recharges. You can go back to Palm Brinks at any time using the いどう (Move) command on your main menu, except when you're in a dungeon. For now, though, continue to the area just beyond the Save Sphere - Charlotte. **************************************************************************** Charlotte (シャロット) dc_charl1 **************************************************************************** The only thing that you see in this town is...lo and behold... a house with an Elf. After a short scenario, you will learn the objective for this area, and, more importantly, gain the plot-advancing item known as Wine from Conda, the Elder of the Fabreeze Elf Tribe. After you receive the Wine, Conda will open the path into the Nanairocho no Mori, which is known as the Rainbow Butterfly Forest in English and is more properly translated as the Forest of the Seven-Colored Butterfly. At this point, the drawbridge in Palm Brinks that was blocking your path before will have been lowered, allowing you to go into eastern Palm Brinks. You can also head through the arches that had been blocked by clowns before during Chapter 1 into Palm Brinks' northwest areas. As noted back in chapter 1, sealed floors are special floors where part of your abilities are sealed. On this particular floor, there's a Red Seal, which means anyone associated with the Red Atlamillia (Yuris's) is unaccessible until the seal is broken. So the only character you can use on this floor is Monica until you finish off all of the enemies to destroy the seal. When the seal is destroyed for a given floor in the game, it remains so on all subsequent visits to the floor. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floor 2-04 - 怪魚の沼 SPECIAL Marsh of the Suspicious Fish dc_2-04 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> When you enter this area, go talk to the Elf sitting on top of the log fishing in the marsh. He'll comment upon the fact that you have some wonderful smelling object. Hand him the Wine. He'll give you the Fishing Pole in return and a Mimi - an initial bit of bait. The game will now prompt you on what to do to fish. First, find a lake. Then, press your Action button to begin fishing. Move the Left stick around to decide where you want to throw your line out to, then press the Action button to throw out your line to that spot. When you feel a vibration from your controller/ see an exclamation mark appear above Yuris's head, move the Left Analog stick down to start reeling in the fish. Use the Action button to reel your catch in. Note that you can only fish as Yuris. Monica doesn't seem to appreciate the simple pleasures of fishing. Run past the Elves, across the bridge, past the Marsh, and make your way towards Master Utan. Those of you who are fans of the original Dark Cloud will recognize him well as one of the dungeon bosses from that game. After you're done conversing with him, take a picture of him for your Scoops (#30), and note the addition of four Rotton Apples in your inventory. Do an abrupt about face, and then go BACK to the marsh pond in the center (not the one where the Elves are at). Equip the Fishing Rod, select the Rotten Apple as your bait, then throw the bait in and wait until you both feel vibrations from your controller AND (more importantly) see an Exclamation point next to Yuris's head. Pull down. When you get Emperor Mardan to come out of the pond, since you can't really say you 'caught' him, talk to him, then take a picture of him for Scoops (#33). Note that this is your one and only opportunity to do so. When Mardan is done, go back to the pond you were at with the Elves before, then fish there until you catch a Haguhagu. The name will most likely differ for the English version, but it doesn't matter - whatever type of fish the Mardan asks for, fish until you get that sort of fish. If you run out of bait, go back to the earlier floors of the dungeon until you garner some more successfully, then come back and do more fishing. Yes, this is the game's way of REALLY forcing you to experience the wonders of fishing. :P Once you've caught a Haguhagu, go talk to the Emperor Mardan once again. He'll flirt, he'll blow kisses, and he'll thankfully go away for good, releasing the remainder of the Elves. I have no idea how his voice is in the American version, but his Japanese voice is anime-freakish. Go back to the Elves, get re-grossed out at the thought that they were so thirsty they drank SWAMP WATER, and exit the dungeon using the Movement command. **************************************************************************** Charlotte dc_charl2 **************************************************************************** Head back into the Elves' House. After a brief celebratory party, you'll be introduced to the semi-oddly named Carpenterion, a flying machine that you'll get extremely well-acquainted with very shortly. This device is what you will use to navigate the Georama System, though you won't get to actually easy use it until you bring back a Geostone. You can go 100 years into the future (Monica's era) by stepping into the Red Timegate by the waterfall. There's not much there now, but you can pick up a Potato Pie and an Eden Fruit. When you're done with that, return to the Marsh of the Suspicious Fish (Floor 2-4) in the Seven-Colored Butterfly Forest and talk with Master Utan. He'll lift up the stray boulders and move them aside, enabling you to pass on to the next part of the dungeon. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floor 2-05 - これがジオストーン? In front of each exit is a small symbol - a moon, a star, or a sun - which indicates which exit this is. You don't need an extra Gate Key to go through one of these gates - a normal Gate Key will work just fine on any of them - with one exception. If the gate is blocked by a Star Barrier, you have to destroy said barrier before heading down a Star Fork. Guess what? This floor has a Star Fork with a Star Barrier. This is a slight spoiler, but I figure it's better to spare you about five hours of grief and tell you this up front. NO, you are NOT supposed to be able to go through the Star-Barriered gate at this point in the game! You won't be able through for another four chapters. After completing this floor, you can pop back to the future (maybe even earlier than this) to get a Witch's Parfait for Monica. After you upload the Georama reqs for this area and exit out of Carpet-Lion, you are told to search for a person who is versed about trees. Yuris mulls for a moment, and then remembers a person who works at his house, Gordon (Green), a gardener. Go to Yuris's house in Parm Brinks and give him Holy Water (聖水) to move on in the game. If you need more details on how to do this, please refer to Green's notes in the NPC section. After you recruit Green, you can recruit almost every other NPC in the game freely, with about four or five exceptions. The benchmarks for the scenarios for plot advancement and events are as follows: Complete Condition #4 (= 40%) - Revive Jurak. Complete Condition #2 (= 50%) - Jurak will give you two things. First, he will give you the Rafresia Seed (ラフレシアの種), and tell you how to get the Sun Dew (太陽のしずく). As you leave the area, Monica will tell you about the Badge Box (バッジボックス), used to store badges for her transformations, and present it to you. Four Wind Crystals are also available in a little box lying around once you complete this step. Complete Condition #3 (= 60%) - Recreate the Tailor Shop. You can buy the Himarra Badge here, which will be Monica's first transformation technique. This is as far as you need to complete the Georama to finish out the chapter, but if you get 100% in Georama by reading the requirements below in the Georama section, there will be one more special scene, where Jurak will bestow upon you the Jurak Gun, a laser gun that can be powered up into the Q-Shot. To get the Sun Dew, take your Himarra badge and turn into a Himarra on a floor that has Himarras on it -- 2-01, 2-03, or 2-06. The first Himarra you talk to as a Himaara will give you the Sun Dew, regardless of which floor you choose to go about your investigations on. In a growing spree that a Chia pet would envy, the Rafresia Flower will bloom from the pond in a spectacular miniature earthquake. Take a picture of the Stem (Scoop #34), then investigate the white thread hanging down from the bloom to get to the boss: Legendary Beast 伝説の魔物 Rainbow Butterfly 七色蝶 (Seven-colored Butterfly) First things first. You aren't able to hit the boss just yet - you must hit the filaments of the Rafresia flower (the tendril things, for those of you who have forgotten basic botany) of the plant. There are six total - one hit is all you need to convince the buggers to writhe upwards. When you finish doing so, the Rafresia flower will release its pollen, attracting the Butterfly to it and causing the beast to separate into its seven component parts. Typically, at this stage of the game Yuris's gun will not have homing capabilities. Switch to Monica and cast a spell at a Butterfly. Alternatively, you could Ridepod and his Barrel Cannon for this task. If you want the Scoop (and you will), fire and hit any of the butterflies OTHER than the red one. This will send all the butterflies back to above the pistil to reunite. When they do so, take a picture of the Butterfly as it's reforming (you have a pretty large amount of time to take the shot) to get Scoop #53. If you want to defeat the Butterfly, cause it to separate it into its component parts as described, then channel your early science classes to remember the order of colors in the rainbow. Good ol' Roy G. Biv: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. It only takes one hit, irregardless of what damage you do, to cause the part to be defeated, as long as you hit it in the proper order. When you defeat the Butterfly, you will get the Envelope, and prompted to go to talk to Jurak. Go to Jurak in Charlotte (when you enter the town, you'll get a note that the future has changed - when you're done talking with Jurak, look around his ladder for a Garnet). After the scenario with Jurak, talk to Cedric outside the train to head on to the next area, Balance Valley. When you arrive, get off the train, go across the bridge, then up the staircase. Go inside the house you see ahead of you. When you're done in there, go back to Palm Brinks briefly and head to Dr. Duck's house over by the port. Talk to Dr. Duck and explain the situation, then once he's joined, return back to the house in Balance Valley to end the chapter. ========\ /========= \ / /=======================================================\ ========= Chapter 3 - 星になった賢者 - The Scholar of the Stars ========== \=======================================================/ / \ dc_chap3 ========/ \========= Monica will briefly explain the situation for this area's Georama (noted below in the Chapter 3 Georama section). This is probably one of the more unique fights of the game, or of any RPG for that matter, just because of the way they handle you attacking the two enemies. Yuris and Monica split off in two separate directions, and the fight is handled in five rounds, bouncing back and forth suddenly between the two to build lots of suspense. Monica goes to fight Giltoni (ギルトーニ ), while Yuris goes off to fight fire with his wrench to protect Lin. ----------------- Monica - Round #1 ----------------- The Assassin of Darkness 闇の刺客 Giltoni ギルトーニ Giltoni, not much of a fan of people who don't get involved with fencing with him, has a series of long distance sword attacks where he shoots out a blue streak of light that will home in on Monica. Since those buggers are nigh near impossible to avoid, just STAY close to him and focus on melee attacks, and he won't do them. Stunningly simple strategy. Optimally, the best way to attack him would be to get around him from the back and whack away. He's incredibly quick though, and will leap away if you sneak around to do this. However, if you engage in a melee attack from the front, he'll switch his strategy to two swings, then leap aside. The best way to break through this onslaught is to at first block his swings with the R1 button. Immediately afterwards, take one or two swings at him again, then instantly move back to block, then swing again before he backflips away. If you don't get him before the backflip, just run after him. It'll take a while, but this strategy is safe, simple, and most importantly, preserves HP. After you've gotten him down to half life or past it, you will switch automatically to Yuris with pretty much no warning. ---------------- Yuris - Round #1 ---------------- Eeeevil Flames - 邪悪な火 Kill 10 of these to continue on back with Monica. All you need to do is hit them with your strongest weapon, and they'll generally go in one hit. Be careful not to let any of them get to Lin, or it'll be it for you. While you're switched over to Yuris, when you get the flames back a bit, take a second to snap a picture of the Death Ark for your Scoops. If you forget, I believe you get one more opportunity - blessedly - in Chapter 5. The people at Level 5 do take mercy on folks every so often, since they probably realized most people were too busy during the semi-imposed time limit in this battle. ----------------- Monica - Round #2 ----------------- Same strategy as before - just get Giltoni down to 1/4 life. ---------------- Yuris - Round #2 ---------------- Beat back 20 of the flames to go back to Monica. If you forgot to get the Scoop, GET IT NOW. ----------------- Monica - Round #3 ----------------- And finally, get down Giltoni to no life. :> Once you've bade farewell to Lin, take a moment and get your Georama to 100% if you haven't already. When you're done doing so, step into the future and then talk to the Senior Sage in that era. The Sage will give you directions for advancing onwards in the game. If you leave and reenter, the Sage will give you the Serpent Sword for your efforts, a mighty blade indeed. Go back into the present era once you're done gathering up all the little treasure chests that have popped up, and get on the train to head to Venetia, off to the Lunatic Wisdom Laboratories, or Luna Labs... ========\ /========= \ / /=======================================================\ ========= Chapter 4 - さよなら、シグー - Sayounara, Shigu ========== \=======================================================/ / \ dc_chap3 ========/ \========= Enter the area, go down out of the train stop area, then into the Cavern. In fact, the Japanese version of Dark Cloud I was clearly billed on the title screen as a "Georama RPG". While the concept of 'building' your own world is hardly new (SimCity, anyone?), the presentation is quite enjoyable, simply from the raw amount of customization you can do in the game. In the middle of Chapter 2, the system will go live in full for you, starting in the town of Charlotte. For each area, you will be given a set number of Creation Points. Every item you create in that particular area uses up a small fragment of this total. Don't worry - unless you go absolutely insane building stuff, you won't ever come seriously close to running out of points. To enter the Georama Menu, enter a Georama Area. When you see a little blue symbol on the lower left of your screen, press Select, and you'll enter Carpenterion. Press Triangle to enter the Georama Menu. The commands, from left to right, are as follows: つくる: Make - The command to create a new building, fence, tree, whatever. If you have sufficient Georama supplies, you will create it. If you don't, take a quick visit to Conda inside of your train, shell out some cash, and go! はいち: Arrangement - Allows you to place an item that you made, or break it down into its component Georama Materials. ペイント: Paint - Paint stuff. かたづけ: Remove - Remove stuff from the environment, sending it back into the Arrangement Menu. カルチャー: Culture - Examine the Culture Points for your present area. ぶんせき: Analysis - Determine how well you're actually doing in your present area. A listing of Georama Materials can be found below in the second part of the Items section. I probably missed a couple of piddly items, but I'll add them in as soon as I can manage. Beyond that, this is as standard a Georama area as you're going to find in Dark Chronicle, so enjoy it for what it's worth while it lasts! **************************************************************************** Parts dc_g2p **************************************************************************** Available upon entering this area: #) Name (Japanese Original) World Max Creation Culture Pts. 1) Little People's House (小人たちの家) 1 300 10 2) Boulder (岩) 10 100 0 3) Logs (丸太) 10 50 0 4) Grass (草) 10 20 0 Parts gained in this chapter: 1) Wooden House (木の家) 16 150 5 2) Iron Chimney 1 (鉄のエントツ1) 20 20 4 3) Pine Tree (トゲトゲの木) 80 40 0 4) Wooden Platform (木の台) 40 30 0 5) Wooden Stairs (木の階段) 40 20 0 6) Waterway (水路) 20 40 0 7) Eyeball Tree A (めだまの木A) 1 200 0 8) Eyeball Tree B (めだまの木B) 1 200 0 9) Big Nose Tree (デカ鼻の木) 1 200 0 10) Straw House (わらの家) 16 80 5 11) Hut (小屋) 40 45 4 12) Uneven Fence (でこぼこ木のサク) 99 12 1 13) Bench (ベンチ) 20 20 2 14) Jar (つぼ) 80 15 2 15) Wagon (レヤカー) 40 30 4 16) Wooden Bridge (木の橋) 5 30 0 17) Jar Torch (つぼのたいまつ) 40 20 2 18) Wooden Gate (木の門) 16 20 2 19) Watermill (水車) 4 150 3 20) Palm Tree (実になる木) 80 40 0 21) Hill (丘) 1 50 8 Parts that can be used from later in the game here: TBD **************************************************************************** Condition Translations dc_g2c **************************************************************************** 1) Make the forest's lake appear. The eyes should face outward according to this pic, and the nostril part of the nose tree should also out. It does not seem to matter whether or not Eye A is on the 'left' or not. ^ ^ ^ Orientation | | | Eye Nose Eye 2) The three adjoining trees need to be enclosed by the river. - Surround the nose and eyeball trees on three sides by the river units. 3) You need to have a river of at least 15 units in size. Fairly self-explanatory. Make a 5 by 3 lake, make a long squiggly, whatever. Just put water down so that you can fulfill the above condition in this list. 4) A person who is versed about trees must live here. - The person who needs to live here is Gordon, the gardener outside of Yuris's house. To get to him (you cannot do so before Chapter 2 starts), leave Cedric's shop, head west towards the bridge, cross it, and head easterly towards the end of the road. The BIG BIG house on your left is Yuris's. Gordon should be standing in front of a tree. See the NPC section if you need more details on getting him. When you put Gordon in a house, be sure to put him in a place him in a house next to trees; otherwise, he won't move in. To get Jurak to give you stuff: 5) 10 or more trees must be planted. Again, fairly self-explanatory. Note that the three trees listed below in #3 do count in this tally. To create the Tailor Shop (where you buy the Himarra Badge from): 6) Adel needs to live in town. Recruit Adel from Yuris's house in Palm Brinks. She is not picky at all about where she lives, but you might want to put her in a Straw House to help fulfill condition #11 in this list. 7) Charlotte's Culture Points need to be at or over 50. Self-explanatory. Build lots of extra fluff, paint your houses, and you should easily attain 50 culture points here. And to finish out all the Georama for this section: 8) Aunt Polly needs to live in town. Recruit Aunt Polly from her shop in Palm Brinks. See the NPC section for specific information on how to get her. She will need to have a wagon outside of her house for her bakery services (or so she says, anyways). 9) Milane needs to live in town. Recruit Milane from the weapon shop in Palm Brinks. Note that she refuses to live in a straw house, but she'll reside happily anywhere else. 10) The Little People's house must be enclosed by fencing. Toss 15 units of fencing around the house that's initially there to fulfill this criteria. Note that, like condition #4, you don't have to surround the house on all four sides, so as long as you do 15 units of fencing. 11) Someone must live in a straw house in Charlotte. You should be able to figure this one out. You can stick in one of the extraneous NPCs in one if you so choose, but your best bet is to build a straw house and put Adel in it, since she's very unpicky about where she resides. ============================================================================ Chapter 3 dc_geo3 ============================================================================ You have 6000 points to start off with when you begin this area. The twist for Balance Valley, the Georama Section in Chapter 3, is that you MUST be careful and make sure that the four plateaus are all kept at equal heights. If you don't, you basically condemn yourself to doing nothing Georama-wise in this area, because every requirement for completing this section hinges on all four plateaus being the same height. If one pillar gets too high, go to the one diagonally across from it and build on that one for a bit until it evens out again. Beyond that little twist, going about finishing the Georama here is pretty much the same as the previous area. **************************************************************************** Parts - Chapter 3 dc_g3p **************************************************************************** Available upon entering this area: #) Name (Japanese Original) World Max Creation Culture Pts. 1) Straw House (わらの家) 16 80 5 2) Hut (小屋) 40 45 4 3) Jar Torch (つぼのたいまつ) 40 20 2 4) Jar (つぼ) 80 15 2 5) Wooden Gate (木の門) 16 20 2 6) Fruit Tree (実になる木) 80 40 0 7) Uneven Fence (でこぼこ木のサク) 99 12 1 8) Bench (ベンチ) 20 20 2 9) Wooden House (木の家) 16 150 5 10) Iron Chimney 1 (鉄のエントツ1) 20 20 4 11) Wagon (レヤカー) 40 30 4 12) Pine Tree (トゲトゲの木) 80 40 0 13) Wooden Platform (木の台) 40 30 0 14) Wooden Stairs (木の階段) 40 20 0 Parts gained in this area: 15) Wooden Crate (倉庫) 20 20 3 16) Shed (納屋) 16 150 2 17) Weather Vane (風見鶏) 40 80 4 18) Wooden Fence (木のサク) 99 12 1 19) Iron Lamp 1 (鉄製ランプ1) 20 20 3 20) Postbox (ポスト) 20 30 1 21) Brick House (レンガの家) 16 150 5 22) Brick Chimney (レンガのエントツ) 20 20 4 23) Iron-Cast Lamp 2 (鉄製ランプ2) 20 25 3 24) Clothesline (洗濯物) 20 20 3 25) Well (井戸) 16 40 4 26) Iron Gate (鉄の門) 20 60 2 27) Iron Fence (鉄の門) 99 25 1 28) Skinny Tree (ヒョロヒョロの木) 80 40 0 29) Block (ブロック) 99 10 0 30) Block 2 (ブロック2) 99 20 0 29) Chinese Booth (中華屋台) 1 300 5 30) Star Lamp (星のランプ) 1 40 3 31) Church (教会) 4 200 8 **************************************************************************** Condition Translations dc_g3c **************************************************************************** An * indicates that this particular condition is available upon entering the area. 1)* Creation of the bottom floor of the Prayer Area (10%) A)* The Four Valley peaks must be the same height. B) The Lighthouse's Moon Crystal exists. **************************************************************************** Quick and Dirty Distilled Format dc_g3p **************************************************************************** To get to the 'center' part of the Stage, you need to fulfill condition 7, which is met by fulfilling conditions 1, 2, 3, and 5 above. 1) The Four Valley peaks must be the same height - this is fairly simple to do as long as you have sense enough to not build everything on one platform. 2) There must be at least 15 trees - Fairly self-explanatory. 3) Priest Bruno needs to live in town - Build the Church and escort him inside. 4) Ferdinand (jpn ver - Pork) needs to be at the Chinese Booth. 5) Culture Points must be at least 40. - In reality, you only need them to be at 30 to do this section, but to complete the chapter's Georama to 100% you will need the full blown 40 points. To finish the stage, you must do condition 8: 6) Lin must be saved - fulfilled when you beat the boss on floor 3-11. 7) A building needs to have a Star Lamp on it - tossing the Star Lamp on any old house will do the trick. 8) Patoli needs to live in town - toss him in any purple-painted house that you like. If you have yet to get any purple paint in the dungeons, go back to his house and climb up the ladder. You'll find 20 purple paints. To get 100% for the stage, you must do these final things to finish the remaining conditions: 9) Four or more torches must be in place - toss four torches wherever you like. 10) Stewart needs to live in town - Stewart, to the best of my knowledge, is totally unpicky about where he resides. 11) Sheriff Blinkhorn must live in town - To get him to move into a house, you need to build a gate and a fence around it. I've typically used the Iron Fences and Gate, simply because I've found iron cheaper, and you can build longer fences with the Iron Fences than the Wooden Fences. 12) The Lighthouse's Moon Crystal exists - This condition is fulfilled when you beat the Chapter 3 Boss. ============================================================================ Chapter 4 dc_geo4 ============================================================================ You have 6000 points to start off with when you begin this area. The main thing with this area is that you have to build wharfs for you to build Georama parts upon, with the exceptions of the boats. While not with you: Sells gunpowder. -------------------- 3) Borneo (ボルネオ) -------------------- Required for: Chapter 5 How to get him: Joins automatically at the beginning of Chapter 2. Borneo can be put into a house at the beginning of Chapter 5. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Increases the odds of enemies dropping items. While not with you: Sells various minerals. ----------------------------- 4) Gordon, aka Green (グリン) ----------------------------- Required for: Chapter 2 Georama (and to get any other NPC besides the initial three above.) How to get him: Green is located just outside of Yuris's house in the garden, tending to a sick tree. Talk to him as Yuris, then when Green is done talking, give Green some Holy Water (the stuff in the white bottle) to help his tree get better and he'll join. If you haven't gotten any randomly by this time, go talk to Father Pluno in the Palm Brinks Church, who will happily sell you some. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Gives you a bonus to killing all plant life. While not with you: Sells Georama Supplies. ------------------------ 5) Adel, aka Rune (ルネ) ------------------------ Required for: Chapter 2 Georama Rune is the maid all the way in the back of your house, in the bedroom beyond the kitchen. To recruit her, talk to twice as Yuris, then bring her Thick Leather, a Copper Lump, and Durable Linen to be worked into Western-style clothing. Talk to her a third time when you have those things, select the first choice, then leave the room and come back in. She'll give you new clothes, depending on what you chose originally back at the beginning of the game. With Yuris's initial clothings being his blue denim overalls, I receieved the Green Overalls. Ability Points: 48 - NO COMMAND ABILITIES While with you: Slowly repairs unequipped weapons. While not with you: Sells fruits. ------------------------- 6) Polly (ポリーおばさん) ------------------------- Required for: Chapter 2 Georama How to get her: Polly is the shopkeeper at Polly's Bakery, just across the street from Cedric's Repair Shop. Go in and ask her to join you. She'll ask you to make a delivery to Mouton's house for her of 20 Sweet Bread (カリ カリパン). Take it, then run next door to Mouton's (the place with the pumpkins outside). Say hello to him, then when he's done, run the bread up to the house with the pumpkins outside of it. Read the note on the door, then go back to Mouton and say hi again. Finally, go back and ask Polly to join you once more. She will this time, and will give you 20 Sweet Bread. Woohoo! Ability Points: 64 - 12: Creates a loaf of Soft Bread. While not with you: Sells ingredients for cooking. -------------------- 7) Milane (ミレーネ) -------------------- Required for: Chapter 2 Georama How to get her: Milane, who you may have seen at the beginning of the game as the lady in the circus, as a part time job in the weapon's shop next door to Cedric's. Talk to her as Monica, and she will give you a Gladius. Evolve the Gladius two times (it doesn't matter into what), then bring it back to her and talk to her as Monica to get her to join you. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Bonus Synth Points for Monica's sword upon level up. While not with you: Sells weapons/tools. ------------------------------- 8) Ferdinand, aka Pork (ポーク) ------------------------------- Required for: Chapter 3 Georama How to get him: Ferdinand is the aptly named fat cook that you may have seen during the initial dialogue between Yuris and Gerald in a flashback in Chapter 1. Ferdinand is located in the kitchen, creating a culinary masterpiece. To complete it, you will need to buy him a Pointy Chestnut (と んがりマロン). This can be obtained either in the dungeon in Chapter 2 in random treasure chests, or by buying some at the food shop in Jurak in the future. Ability Points: 64 - 24: Creates a Premium Chicken. While not with you: Sells Premium Chicken. ------------------------ 9) Stuart (スチュアート) ------------------------ Required for: Chapter 3 Georama How to get him: You can find Stuart at the front door of your house. He will ask you for a lot of money for early in the game, but by the time you reach chapter 3 you will be easily amassing cash, so getting him will not be a problem. Initially, he asked me for 1000 Gold. Then he decided he needed 1500 Gold. Finally, he figures that he needs 2000 Gold for the item that he wants at an auction. Leave the house and reenter. He'll return 600 Gold back to you, then join you. Ability Points: 52 While with you: Slowly recovers your hitpoints. While not with you: Sells Yuris's Shoes. ------------------------------- 10) Priest Bruno (ブルーノ神父) ------------------------------- Required for: Chapter 3 Georama Priest Bruno is probably among the easiest recruits in the game. He's inside of the church, preaching to the people the Good Word. He'll gladly join your cause when you ask him -- all you need to do is to snuff all the candles. The trick is that some of them are more than happy to flicker back into being. To get them all off, snuff the designated candles (the ones represented by 0's) as shown in the cheap ASCII figure below. It doesn't matter which way is up - because lo and behold, you can flip it any which way, and it'll remain the same.) 0 x x x x 0 x x 0 x x x x 0 Ability Points: 72 - 48: Revives either Yuris or Monica. While not with you: Sells curative items. ---------------------------------------------------------- 11) Sheriff Blinkhorn, aka Sheriff Barker (バッカー保安官) ---------------------------------------------------------- Required for: Chapter 3 Georama Blinkhorn, having a major need to see someone with speed, will challenge Yuris (not Monica) to a race. To do it, you have to run all the way to the wharf where you pick up Flavin and touch the boat (see below for information on getting Flavin), then run back to Sheriff Blinkhorn in 2 minutes and 1 second. When you run there, make sure that you hug the edge of the road as much as possible to cut travel time. When you hit the wharf, you should see an excalamation point. Hit the Circle button twice immediately, about face, then haul yourself back to Blinkhorn as fast as possible. DO NOT WASTE TIME READING THE MESSAGE. The clock continues going while you do so, and you need every hundredth of a second you can muster. Practice will make perfect on this. This is not a race you can blaze through in 1m30s - you will be pushing yourself to get a half second under, never mind many seconds under time. The race is easier if you recruit Flavin first, if for no other reason than he won't be sitting there in front of the dock as a roadblock. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Nothing. Stereotypical cop. While not with you: Shows you the Monster Memo. Uniquely useless. ----------------------------- 12) Parn, aka Patoli (パトリ) ----------------------------- Required for: Chapter 3 Georama How to get him: Go into the future in Chapter 2 and buy a Golden Paintbrush at the Tailor Shop. Talk to him as Yuris, hand the Paintbrush to him, and both he and Julia will join. While you're in his house, be sure to go up the ladder to find 20 pails of Purple Paint. Ability Points: 72 32: Reveals Dungeon? While not with you: Sells paint. ------------------- 13) Claire (クリア) ------------------- Required for: Chapter 4 Georama How to get her: Claire will initially hang around outside of the coffee shop near the Town Hall during the daytime. Show her a picture of a rare flower to get her to join you. You could take a picture of the Rafresia Stalk in Chapter 2, or you could take a picture of the Himaara or ManEater or any other plantlike creature you find, and that'll thrill her to bits. If you don't get her when you initially talk to her, you can find her later in the house immediately outside of Yuris's house's gates, up on the second floor in one of the rooms. Ability Points: While with you: While not with you: ------------------ 14) Donny (ドニー) ------------------ Required for: Chapter 4 Georama How to get him: Donny will be in the secret base that he's been in since the beginning of the game. To recruit him, you need to help him add to his coin collection by getting him the Iron Wall (鉄壁) Coin, Darkness (暗黒) Coin, aka the Durability Coin and the Evil Coin. Once you reach Chapter 2, you can buy them for a limited time (read - until you recruit Donny) for 1500 gold. This is the only time in the game that you can purchase these coins this cheap - the next time they're available is in Chapter 8 (!), and the coins there run from 5000-15000 or so each. Ability Points: While with you: While not with you: Reveals scoops, sells essential dungeon items. --------------------- 15) Gerald (ジェラド) --------------------- Required for: Chapter 5 Georama How to get him: Much like Milane does, Gerald will give you a weapon -- a gun for Yuris -- that he wants you to power up. Unlike Milane, you will only have to evolve the Bugle Gun that he gives you one time to get him out of the house. Gerald, being Yuris's dad, is located inside of Yuris's house in Gerald's room on the first floor. You must talk to him as Yuris to get the gun. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Bonus Synth Points when leveling up a gun. While not with you: Sells guns. -------------------- 16) Corinne (コリン) -------------------- Required for: Nothing. How to get her: Corinne, located upstairs in the house with the pumpkin patch next to the church, wants you to play a game of hide and seek with her. The first place that she hides is the upstairs of the house outside of Yuris's house's gate. Go upstairs past both of the rooms, and she's hiding at the end of the walkway in somewhat plain sight. Talk to her and she'll hide again. Go into Yuris's house, go up to his room, then look between his bed and closet. There will be Corinne. Talk to her there and she'll join you. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Forces the Yellow Coins spots in dungeons to always show Angels. While not with you: Sells hair ribbons. --------------------------------- 17) Rosa (ローサばあさん) --------------------------------- Required for: Gaijin Protection. (Okay, nothing in particular, really.) How to get her: Grandma Rosa is located in the passageway in Yuris's house en route to the kitchen, but she's only about during the daytime there. Since she's hard of hearing, you have to talk to her loud and slowly. The game designers decided that this would be a prime opportunity for a cheap 'enter the message' game. At the top will be a prompt of what to enter. In the English version, input the following, without the quotes: "Let's go together." In the Japanese version, input the following: いっしょに冒険しよう (Let's adventure together!) Hit the 5th button at the top (the kanji button) after you've inputted いっ しょに. The first kanji is on screen 13, the second row, third column. The second kanji is on the fourth screen, three rows beneath the kana header 'け '. In the English version, copy down EXACTLY what they say for you to input, even down to the period, sans whatever quotes they may or may not use. Ability Points: 72 - 24: Create Cheese While not with you: Sells charms. -------------------------------- 18) Fabio, aka Flavin (フラビン) -------------------------------- Required for: Nothing How to get him: Flavin is located at the docks in Palm Brinks, all the way over towards Dr. Duck's house, by the boat. He'll ask you to fish for a 60 cm or greater Nonky. Note that while the game suggests you fish in Palm Brinks, you don't HAVE to give Flavin a fish from Palm Brinks. If you want to stick to Palm Brinks, fish from the ground immediately next to the western docks on the side of the port where Dr. Duck's house is. Ability Points: 64 - 18: Create Bait. While not with you: Sells bait. ------------------------------- 19) Rufio, aka Lucio (ルーシオ) ------------------------------- Required for: Nothing How to get him: Rucio can be found wandering on the path around the lake in the northern part of Palm Brinks - he's the midget in the robe with a shrouded black face, glowing ey...hey! So that's what BM and Vivi really are!!! Err, ahem...wrong series. Those of you who've played Dark Cloud 1 know what species of animal Rucio really is - and those of you who don't will probably figure it out after Chapter 3. Take a picture of the moon in the night sky. Show it to Rucio at any time of the day, and he'll join you. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Increases your ability to damage undead. While not with you: Sells elements and elemental stones. --------------------------- 20) Mayor Need (ネード町長) --------------------------- Required for: Nothing Mayor Need, blessed of a masterful memory (not) has forgotten the combination for his safe in the Town Hall. To get to the Town Hall, go left from the interesection at the police station, then go up the staircase and into the door in the center. Talk to him, and he'll explain what he remembers of the combination. 0) The number is four digits, and they're Claire's birthday. 1) He gave her a Zodiac constellation brooch. He only recalls it being a four-legged animal. 2) Mufflers and coats are worn around on her birthday. 3) Her birthday is on a day both divisible by 3 and 7. This puzzle is EASY (if you aren't blocked by gaijin protection). Clue 3 tells you that the date is the 21st of some month. Clue 2 narrows it down to December, January, or February. The animals of the zodiac that are represented during those months are Sagittarius the Centaur (4 legs) (12/01-12/21), Capricorn the Sea Goat (2 (fore)legs) (12/22-1/20), Aquarius the Water Bearer (Human, two legs) (1/21-2/20), and Pisces the Fish (no legs) (2/21-2/28). When you know the answer, input ONLY the number in MMDD format, via the English character menu. That answer is... 1221. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Extra money when you kill an enemy. While not with you: Exchanges medals for various items. -------------------- 21) Julia (ジュリア) -------------------- Required for: Nothing How to get her: Julia joins automatically with Parn. While with you: While not with you: Sells Mighty Heals. -------------- 23) Lin (リン) -------------- Required for: Chapter 3 Plot Progression How to get her: Lin will join your party in the last third of Chapter 3 for about five floors, and is almost purely a story NPC. She will automatically leave your group after that time and be unrecoverable, to the best of my knowledge. Ability Points: 0 While with you: Bonus Synth Point when leveling up your gun. While not with you: You'll just have to see. -------------- 24) Pau (パウ) -------------- Required for: Nothing How to get him: After Chapter 4 concludes, go back to his cave in Venetia and feed him a carrot. (If you don't have any, you can always buy some from Flavin if you've recruited him.) Bunnies LOVE carrots! Ability Points: While with you: While not with you: 25) - Spheeda Girl in Town Hall who you have to win 10 Spheeda rounds to get. 26) - Little Elf Girl whose name I always forget by the waterfall who wants you to win the beginning level of the fishing races. ________________________________________________________________________ / \ dc_item \ | 7 | Items | \___/____________________________________________________________________/ Items - the materials that keep you alive, keep you from dying, and render your tush into competence when waving your favorite pointy stick at the enemies that want and love nothing better than to swarm you. RPGs are notorious for showering you with tons of items, and Dark Chronicle is no exception to this rule. I have divided items up into three broad categories - regular items that you can pick up anywhere, Georama Items, and Special Items. Items that can be gotten only via the Invention command will be added in later versions of this guide. 1) Can the item be used in Georama, and is it only used in these systems? - Yes = Creation Items 2) Is there only one of the item in the entire game, and is it needed to advance in the story? - Yes = Special Items 3) Can this item be created only as an Invention, and is it not a Ridepod part? - Yes = Invention Item 4) Is this item not equippable as a weapon, and can I get multiples of this item? - Yes = Regular Item There are a couple of exceptions to the above rules. Since Gold Bullion is an item used in Creation, it's listed under Georama Items rather than Regular Items, even though it does have a usage outside of the Georama System unlike most Georama items - its unique property of being able to be resold to a shopkeeper at its original price. Gems, being buyable at Mouton's in Chapter 8 and being obtainable via Spheeda, are considered Regular Items, even though they're rarer and more expensive than - well, pretty much everything else in the game. This section is very much still in progress. :P ============================================================================ 6A - Regular Items dc_regi ============================================================================ **************************************************************************** Items for Recovery, Repairing, and General Self-Improvement **************************************************************************** ------------------------- Soft Bread (ふんわりパン) ------------------------- This delicious and nutricious item recovers 32 hit points to either Yuris or Monica. Location: Invention only - instructions are given in chapter 4. **************************************************************************** Consumeable (1 Use Only) **************************************************************************** -------------------------------- Circus Ticket (サーカスチケット) -------------------------------- This item allows you to get into the Porcus Circus. Appearance: A bright yellow worm. Location: Red Lab, Chapter 4 Future ---------------------------------------- Seashell Translator (貝がら型ほんやく機) ---------------------------------------- This is used to interpret the speech of the Shigura Appearance: A silver horn-shaped shell. Location: Blue Lab, Chapter 4 Future ________________________________________________________________________ / \ dc_photo \ | 8 | Scoops and Photography | \___/____________________________________________________________________/ The reason the game's save files are so big are almost entirely on account of this system right here - the photography system. By taking photographs, you can get new ideas for inventions and even receive special prizes for your efforts. You can store 30 individual photographs (though you can store all your ideas) at a time. Once you pick up the Album from Yuris's bedroom in Chapter 2, you can also store an additional 50 photographs (per memory card) for later recovery. Donny, the little kid in Chapter 1 who helps out Yuris, will be the one who handles the special prizes for your skill at taking pictures. Note that he WILL not tell you anything about Scoops until you recruit him into your group! (Glance above at the NPC section to find out how to recruit him) Each photograph you take in the game has a certain value to Donny. If a photograph is a Scoop (a red and yellow light bulb shows up next to the picture's name), it counts for five points. If a photograph is normal (a plain yellow light bulb), it counts for two points. You do NOT need to show the Scoop photograph to Donny to credit for it. All you need to do is take a picture of a particular enemy, absorb its idea, and then go off on your merry path. Tell him about it later (again, once you've recruited him), and he'll set you up with a prize, as follows: Level 1 - 0 pts - Nothing (Starting Point) Level 2 - 100 pts - Diamond (ダイモンド) Level 3 - 200 pts - Explorer's Hat (Clothing for Yuris) Level 4 - 300 pts - Steal Coin (盗むコイン) Level 5 - 400 pts - Level 6 - ??? - Level 7 - ??? - Level 8 - ??? - For those of you with good counting skills, you might have brought up your idea menu and counted 293 slots for ideas for inventions. You have 53 possible scoops, soooo.... 293 Total Ideas - 53 Scoops = 240 Regular Ideas. 53 * 5 = 265 240 * 2 = 480 --- 745 possible points. And here's a handy chart, roughly describing the breakdown of when you get these pictures: Scoops Pictures Total Chapter 1 4 * 5 + 81 * 2 = 182 pts 182 Chapter 2 11 * 5 + 54 * 2 = 163 pts 345 Chapter 3 13 * 5 + 15 * 2 = 95 pts 440 I have organized the photographs roughly in the order that you get them in the game itself. The Scoops, instead of being listed in the order that you see them in the Scoop Journal, are being listed in the much more useful (to me, anyways) order of how you come across them in the game. The first bunch listed in any Scoop section are the ones that are so-called 'one-shots' - boss battle Scoops make up the vast majority, though not the entirety, of these. The rest of the shots are listed in their order that they peek out in the Scoop Journal Since so many photographs are available in the game, I have divided them broadly by area/chapter as below. All photos with an asterix next to them are, as near as I can tell, totally unique to that area. This guide only goes through Chapter 3 at the moment. It will expand as I finish out the rest of the game. Try to make her look fearsome! Available as: #13 Do During: Floor 1-4 - 1 CHANCE ONLY!!! -------------------------------------------------- 2) Clown Robot Attack ピエロロボの攻撃 - ONE SHOT! -------------------------------------------------- Take a picture of Halloween, Polkas's vehicular mech, when it's doing its missile attack. Be sure and be careful, since this attack is deadly! Available as: #14 Do During: Floor 1-7 - 1 CHANCE ONLY! -------------------------------------------------- 3) Emperor Mardan (エンペラーマーダン) - ONE SHOT! -------------------------------------------------- Once you coax Emperor Mardan out of his pond on Floor 2-4, take a picture of him. You lose the opportunity to take snapshots of him once you catch the fish he wants, so be careful! Available as: #33 Do During: Floor 2-4 - 1 CHANCE ONLY! ----------------------------------- 4) Night Stalker (ナイトストーカー) ----------------------------------- Is this guy a ballerina or something? Take a shot the instant it performs its spinning attack. Available as: #7 Do During: Floor 1-3, 1-5 ----------------------------------------------------- 5) Vanguard - aka The Dangling Baron (ぶらさがり男爵) ----------------------------------------------------- Vanguard Pic. When it does its stomping attack. The best way to coax him into doing this, I've found, is to get really close to him and whack him a couple times from behind (as Yuris with a weak weapon, preferably - the point is to get him to use the move and not to kill Vanguard before he actually does it!) This pic, incidentally, is hard. It's recommended that you wait and advance a bit in the game to build up Yuris's defense if you have trouble getting it early on in the game. Available as: #17 Do During: Floor 1-5 --------------------------------- 6) Master Utan (マスターウータン) --------------------------------- Take a picture of this dude while he's bummed on his bum. Note that he is not a One Shot, unlike Emperor Mardan, but you'll probably end up taking his picture at the same time. Available as: #30 Do During: Floor 2-4 **************************************************************************** Scoops - Floor 2:05 - 2:11 dc_sco2 **************************************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) Unification of the Rainbow Butterfly! (合体!七色蝶) - ONE SHOT! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Take a picture of the Rainbow Butterfly as it reforms from its seven component parts. Available as: # 53 Do During: Floor 2-11 - ONE CHANCE ONLY! -------------------------------------- 8) Dangerous Pumpkin (危ないパンプキン) -------------------------------------- Take a shot when a Pumpkinhead is twirling his little pitchfork around threateningly. Aww! Isn't he cute? Available as: #8 Do During: Floor 2-5, among others. -------------------------------------- 9) Gyumo -------------------------------------- Take a picture of the Gyumo as it's howling upwards. It'll usually do this when it's not feeling threatened (when it doesn't realize you're nearby). Available as: #11 Do During: Floor 2-?? -------------------------------------- 10) Mysterious Laugh of the Maneating Grass - 人食い草の怪笑 -------------------------------------- Take a shot when a ManEater looks like it's eating something (right before it spits). Available as: #12 Do During: Floor 2-1, among others. -------------------------------------- 11) Napping Tore -------------------------------------- Take a picture of a Tore as it slumbers (when it has its hands in front of its 'mouth'). This is best achieved by being at a distance from it. Available as: #18 Do During: Floor 2-02, among others. -------------------------------------- 12) Leaping! Moler! -------------------------------------- The photograph requirement is that you catch a Moler in midleap. It sounds pretty easy, since, despite what the description says, a Moler leaping is really common if you're anywhere near the Moler. Unfortunately, it's not. First off, you can't lock on to a Moler as it's crawling around underground, so you have to face towards it to take the picture, and the natural inclination is to run in reverse (in other words, face AWAY from the Moler) to make sure you have plenty of room to take the shot. This does not work well. The other problem is that if you get too far away, the Moler won't even bother to leap - it'll spit out little curse balls. The secret to catching the photo? Snapping the shutter like mad while slightly under one leap's distance away from the Moler. This technique (snapping the shutter like mad) will serve you well on a LOT of other Scoops. Available as: #20 Do During: Floor 2-05, among others. -------------------------------------- 13) Discovery! The Golden Egg! -------------------------------------- Once you complete requirement eight in the Georama for chapter 2, this magical egg will appear. Take a picture of them up in their high branches to get yet another easy Scoop. Available as: #25 Do During: Chapter 2 Future, when the Golden Egg is recreated. -------------------------------------- 14) Moooaaan! Jurak! -------------------------------------- Just take a picture of Jurak as soon as he's revived in the future. Available as: #26 Do During: Future, Chapter 2, when Jurak is revived and all healthy. -------------------------------------- 15) Rafresia Stalk -------------------------------------- Simply take a picture of the Rafresia Stalk once you've grown the Rafresia Flower. Even if you don't get it before you fight the Rainbow Butterfly, you can get it at any time later. It is recommended that you save this photograph to show it later to Claire, if you didn't get a picture of a Himarra or a ManEater. Available as: #34 Do During: Floor 2-11 **************************************************************************** Scoops - Chapter 3 dc_sco3 **************************************************************************** ------------------------------------- 16) Mysterious Memo Eater - ONE SHOT! ------------------------------------- Just take a picture of him during the boss battle. It doesn't matter at all what pose he's in. Available as: #4 Do during: Floor 3-11 - ONE CHANCE ONLY! ----------------------------------- 17) Death Ship - TWO/THREE SHOTS! ----------------------------------- When you switch back to Max in the battle versus the little flames, turn and take a picture of the Death Ark. If you miss it here, I believe you get a second chance during Chapter 5, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Available as: #35 Do during: Floor 3-18 - LIMITED CHANCE ONLY! * Note - this condition is only available AFTER you've beaten the Memo Eater. --------------- 18) Dragon Fire --------------- Take a picture of a Dragon the instant it spits out a ball of fire. Available as: #1 Do during: Floor 3-10, 3-16, 3-18 ----------------------------- 19) Rotating Around - Ivanov! ----------------------------- Snap Ivanov as he's rolling towards you when he performs his rolling attack. Available as: #2 Do during: Floor 3-09 ----------------- 20) Dash! Ram -------------- Much like the above, take a picture of a Ram as it dashes towards you. Available as: #3 Do during: Floor 3-01 -------------------------------- 21) Transformation! Statue Dog! -------------------------------- Inching slowly towards the Statue Dog, take a picture of it the instant it folds out of its block shape into doggie form. Available as: #5 Do during: Floor 3-03 -------------------------------- 22) Stoneman Banzai! -------------------------------- Take a picture of the Golem as he's doing the 'Banzai!' hand raising motion, in preparation for his hand slam attack (as opposed to his flailing his arms about attack). For those of you who don't know what a 'Banzai' hand motion is, it's exactly the same as the motion for a touchdown in American football. :> Available as: #9 Do during: Floor 3-09 ------------------------------- 23) Nice Massage! ------------------------------- Take a picture of the Canaria Priest as it folds its arms to its side, as if it were massaging its shoulders. Available as: #10 Do during: Floor 3-09 ------------------------------- 24) The Face of the Demon ------------------------------- Take a picture of the Demon Mask Tribesman as it opens the front of its mask to do that little chomping attack thing. If you get up to close to it and snap like mad, you should have no problems getting it - even if you do get injured in the process. Available as: #19 Do during: Floor 3-01 --------------------------------- 25) Moon Crystal --------------------------------- When you've finished Chapter 3, take a picture of the Moon Crystal (the really big blue shiny thing) in the Future to get this scoop. Available as: #27 Do during: Chapter 3 Future ---------------------------------- 26) King of the Lake ---------------------------------- This guy is a bit tricky to get, especially as you can only get him during a certain time - and you can't see him! What you're trying to take a picture of, see, is an invisible ghost above a lake. He BECOMES visible when a sudden flash of light hits him - namely, when you take a picture of him. To photograph him, go to the Wharf where you got Flavin, the fishing boy. Look out towards Dr. Dell's clinic, then take a picture in that general direction roughly around midnight. If you don't get the scoop right then, you will at least definitely SEE where you need to point your camera at. Duh. Congrats on nailing developing rights to Dragon Warrior/Quest VIII, guys! Sony - For believing in this set of skilled designers to publish a sequel. Boy, I hope you guys get your money's worth, though the folks who planned the release date should've timed it to NOT coincide with Zelda and Tales of Destiny 2. Tsk. Dengeki Playstation Magazine - For saving me a lot of time and effort with that awesome weapons guide on page 55 in issue 224. :D Famitsu - For providing me with additional information in Japanese, also intergrated into this guide in places.
