In the meantime, enjoy the mediocre updates and cross your fingers that more stuffs are updated in the next update. ^_^ =========================================================================== = INTRODUCTION / REVIEW = =========================================================================== ::INTRODUCTION:: Name: "d"]?i<@fo?[f`fff?f"f}?[fY (Dennou Senki Virtual On Marz) Translated name: Cybertroopers Virtual On Marz No. of players: 1 - 2 Memory card (PS2): 100kb Genre: 3D Action Shooting Compatiable to Analog Controller (Dual Shock 2) Virtual On Marz (Or VO Marz or just simply Marz) is the sequel to Virtual On FORCE by the same creators; Hitmaker. Unlike its predecessors Operation Moongate (VOOM) and Oratorio Tangram (Oratan), FORCE and Marz focused a gameplay whereby a 2 x 2 player is possible. While this somewhat diversifies the usual 1 x 1 gameplay and is in other ways desireable by some players, Virtuaroid (VR) abilities have been severely restricted and spread over several models of the same VRs. Review: Graphics: 10 / 10 Sound : 7 / 10 Gameplay: 7 / 10 Replay : 7 / 10 Average rating: 7 / 10 While my first general play through of Marz was one of pure disgust, replays through this has pointed out that it is not entirely bad. Graphics are very much improved (ala DC ver. of Oratan), the same original gameplay is much intact saved for some changes and the new and existing models of VRs have some interesting movelists / animations. The only gripe veterans around the world seem to be having is the absence of a twin stick support for this game and the entirely new tactical way of playing for most veterans. Personally, I find this to be the biggest hindrance as I, having been weaned from playing with twin sticks, find it extremely difficult to adjust to controllers. The learning curve for this version has also been simplified a great deal and while I do not necessarily agree if one was to train specifically with a certain VR, it has also been said that "you can just grab any Temjin and Big Two your way through" which I find to be true most of the time. The loading time for this game is quite okay, althought it can get long at times. The music, while good, tends to grate on your nerves after a while, especially if you are camping in Dramatic mode and have to listen to the horrifying briefing BGM over and over and over....etc. If the action gets too intense, the game can slow down very considerably as well. In short, if you're like me, a VO fanatic and like to give yourself a challenge with a mecha versus game that offers you a different gameplay from others in its genre, by all means, give Marz a try. However, if you're the sort who gets easily frustrated (and have a tendency to throw your controller at the screen), I suggest you either rent the game or borrow from your friend if they have one. It's probably not worth the casual gamer's money for this game but diehard hardcore VO fans, this is the game for you.. if you can adjust to the controls and new VR capabilities. This section will roughly try to explain the parties involved and a little background information if possible. Note: All relational data are taken from the original VO-Marz website @ http://www.vo-marz.com. --------- ARMY --------- :: DNA :: DNA is the resident goodguy in this series. Supported by Lilin Prajina both financially and in terms of military power, they are in alliance with the SHBVD. DNA's Lilin is also known to have set up the Byakkou no Kishidan, a group of pro-justice pilots who pilot winter white Temjins and fight the Shadows. :: RNA :: RNA is the opposite of DNA and is headed by Anbel IV. Similar to Lilin, Anbel supports RNA through financial and military terms. Anbel IV personally commands the Bara no san shimai and sends them to investigate and combat with Marz. Anbel IV also forms the "Strike Fleet Force" to stop the intruders "Ajim" and "Guerlain" from invading this world. :: S.H.B.V.D. :: Their name is a acronym for Special Heavy Battle Virtuaroids Division. This elite division has been often looked upon as a pest by other hostile traders seeking to gain control of the highly contested areas. They also specialise in Raiden class VRs. :: BYAKKOU KISHIDAN :: They are an elite unit formed by Lilin Prajina to combat the Shadows. They pilot customised VRs to utilise such firepower for combat against the Shadows, of which they make the latter's termination as first priority. :: BARA NO SAN SHIMAI :: Translated to the Three Sisters of Rose, they are Captain Shuvi Fang, First Lieutenant Deborah Byte and First Lieutenant Jennifer Poison. They are the commanding unit under Anbel IV, who is currently commanding the plant TSC Drammen. Under Anbel IV's orders, they will investigate and fight Marz. Their Myzrs are personalised with their own names too: Shuvi's Fair Bianca, Deborah's Evelyn and Jennifer's Charlotte. =========================================================================== = BASIC MOVEMENT = =========================================================================== This section will aim to explain the basics of movement in Marz, along with the controller settings and such. -------------------------------- CONTROLLER TYPE (As translated from Marz manual) -------------------------------- TYPE A: Directional Keys ------ 8 way directional movement Left stick ------------- 8 way directional movement Right stick ------------ Rotation Circle ----------------- Target acquisition X ---------------------- Crouch / Guard Square ----------------- Turbo Triangle --------------- Jump L1 button -------------- Left rotation L2 button -------------- Left trigger (Use LW) R1 button -------------- Right rotation R2 button -------------- Right trigger (Use RW) Select ----------------- Use repair disc TYPE B: Directional Keys ------ 8 way directional movement Left stick ------------- Rotation Right stick ------------ Rotation Circle ----------------- Turbo X ---------------------- Crouch / Jump Square ----------------- Target acquisition Triangle --------------- Jump L1 button -------------- Not in use L2 button -------------- Left trigger (Use LW) R1 button -------------- Not in use R2 button -------------- Right trigger (Use RW) Select ----------------- Use repair disc TWIN A: Directional Keys ------ Not in use Left stick ------------- Left stick Right stick ------------ Right stick Circle ----------------- Not in use X ---------------------- Not in use Square ----------------- Not in use Triangle --------------- Not in use L1 button -------------- Left turbo L2 button -------------- Left trigger (Use LW) R1 button -------------- Right turbo R2 button -------------- Right trigger (Use RW) L1 + R1 ---------------- Target acquisition Select ----------------- Use repair disc TWIN B: Directional Keys ------ Left stick Left stick ------------- Not in use Right stick ------------ Not in use Circle ----------------- Right stick, direction right X ---------------------- Right stick, direction down Square ----------------- Right stick, direction left Triangle --------------- Right stick, direction up L1 button -------------- Left turbo L2 button -------------- Left trigger (Use LW) R1 button -------------- Right turbo R2 button -------------- Right trigger (Use RW) L1 + R1 ---------------- Target acquisition Select ----------------- Use repair disc -------------------------------- AUTOTYPE ACTIONS -------------------------------- 8 WAY MOVEMENT: Movement on all compass directions is possible AIR / GROUND DASHING: Dashing is accomplished by pressing a directional button / stick in one specific direction and pressing the turbo button. For air dashing, jump, directional button / stick press and then followed by the turbo button. You can choose to cancel your dashing anytime by pressing the turbo again once. JUMP: Useful for avoiding attacks and re-orienting yourself. Press the appropriate jump button to make your VR jump. AIR / JUMP / GROUND ATTACK: You can choose to attack your opponent during any of these three actions phases. Simply press the appropriate weapon trigger for your VR to launch an attack. CLOSE COMBAT: Close combat is performed when your VR approaches the enemy and one if not all of your weapon guages turn yellow. Pressing the respective guage's trigger will make your VR launch its own specialised CC attack against the opponent. There are four different types of CC attacks which will be covered below: :: Sidestep :: Sidestep CC is performed when you press a directional button and a weapon trigger simultaneously while in CC range. Note that you can only perform sidestep CCs with the left and right weapons only. :: Dashing :: Dashing CC is performed while your VR is in the midst of a dash. Pressing back and any weapon trigger will make your VR execute its signature dashing CC attack. Dash rotation CC is possible. :: Jump :: Jumping cc is performed when you hit the jump button and any weapons trigger simultaneously. :: Over :: Over CC is a new concept introduced to Marz. When in CC range, pressing back and any weapons trigger will make your VR lurch forward to the enemy with a jumping uppercut CC move that chunks off a good deal of enemy's health. Slow to start and with a recovery delay, this move is best used when an enemy is parked above an obstacle and you don't want to risk a jump cc or use it against guard freaks who have barely an inch of their life left. Whiff this and be prepared to pay for it dearly. =========================================================================== = MODES OF PLAY = =========================================================================== In Virtual On Marz's main menu, there are five options for you to choose from of which one is the OPTIONS. :: DRAMATIC MODE :: This mode is RPGesque and feels a bit like the Armoured Core series. In this mode, you will be tasked to complete missions upon which you will be graded from SS to E rank at the end of the mission with a report. This mode only allows for 1 player in which you play as a member of Mars Special Search Mobile Unit (?I??"A'{<@"(r)."'a). You will initially start out with a Temjin 707S but gradually later in the game, you will be able to unlock more VRs to use for your missions. Acting upon the orders of your superior, you will launch from your base to complete your missions. = STARTING IN DRAMATIC MODE = Upon selection of Dramatic mode from the main menu, you will be prompted whether to select a NEW GAME or CONTINUE. If you select NEW GAME, continue to next paragraph. If you select CONTINUE, jump to << CONTINUE >>. Upon selection of NEW GAME, a sub menu will open. In here you can choose the level of difficulty you wish to undertake the mission at. The four difficulties you can choose from are: Normal, Hard, Very Hard and Ultimate. NORMAL: is recommended for those who are just starting out in Virtual On and wish to get a feel for the game and its controllers. HARD: is basically an upped version of NORMAL and is basically targetted at players who have already familiarised themselves with the controls and systems. Recommended for VO veterans. VERY HARD: is targetted at the players who are good and familiar with the specialities of various Virtuaroids. For the upper class VO pilots. ULITMATE: is the ultimate challenge for all VO veterans. Once you have finished choosing your difficulty, you will be taken to the next menu where you will input your pilot's name. You have a maximum space of 10 characters and scroll between each character page with the L1 and R1 button. You will start out on the Hirigana page, followed by Katakana and finally the english alphabet page. Press OK when you're done to proceed to the mission briefing. << CONTINUE>> If you chose to continue, you will be taken to the memory card load page. Naturally, it goes without saying that you will definitely need a previously saved game in order to continue. Select from slot 1 or 2 and choose your save. Hit O when you have highlighted the game you wish to continue from. Next, you will be taken to the mission briefing menu. In this menu, you are given the choice to either: - Start Mission To begin your mission. - Pilot Data View your pilot data. - Database View data on various discs that you will collect throughout the game. - Controller Setting Configure your controller settings here. - Save Save your game. - Load Load your game. Choosing START MISSION will bring you to the mission's briefing and the objectives you have to achieve for a mission completion. Once you have finished the mission briefing, you will be taken to the hangar menu where you can: - Virtuaroid Select Change the VR you are currently using. - Briefing Review the entire briefing again in case you pressed the O button too Fast or accidentally and didn't quite recap the objectives. - Database Review all data you have collected from the discs. - GO! Start your mission! ^_^ :: CHALLENGE MODE :: Challenge mode allows you to select a VR of your choice (variable from the number of VRs you have unlocked) to play through. It is basically the same as Dramatic mode minus the horrendously long briefings. You will also choose your AI controlled partner. A good combination of your selected VR and your partner VR is crucial to surviving challenge mode. :: VERSUS MODE :: Tired of missions? Want some action? This is the mode for you. As its name implies, this mode offers you the chance to play 2 on 2 against either the AI or a human controlled VR. In this mode, you can choose to play either 1P + AI versus 2P + AI or 1P + 2P versus 2x AI. Or you can take the challenge and play 1 versus 2. On the player type field, you can choose from 1P, 2P, AI or Novr (No VR). Novr is quite self explainatory. Note: You cannot set Novr for the leader's position. Select your stage, playtime and number of rounds and confirm with the O button. Select START to begin the match. :: VIRTUAROID COLLECTION :: This option allows you to view all the VRs you have unlocked in the course of your game. :: SYSTEM :: The OPTIONS of Marz, selecting this will bring you to a new window. In this menu, you can choose to configure your controller under CONTROLLER SETTINGS, adjust the sound volume and such under SOUND / BGM VOLUME / SE VOLUME, make adjustments to your screen under SCREEN ADJUST and finally save or load your Marz system file under SAVE SYSTEM FILE / LOAD SYSTEM FILE. =========================================================================== = SCREEN LAYOUTS = =========================================================================== This section will cover the various screen layouts you will see in the game and how to make the best use of them for maximum game enjoyment ^_^ Put up with my god-awful ASCII art. ==U. ________________________________________________________ ___________ | ______ __________________________________________ || | | |__(4)_| |_____________(3)__________________________| || | | || (5) | | __________________________________________ || | | |________________(2)_______________________| || | | ____________________________________________||___________| | / | | (9) | _______ | | |_(1)___| | |___________| | ( 1 ) | |___________| (6) _________________________/\_________________________ | | ____________ ____________ ____________ |____________| |____________| |____________| (a) (b) (c) _ / \ ________________ | | x / 5 |_____(8)________| \_/ (7) ----------------------------------------------------- This will be the most common screen you will see in Dramatic mode. Refer below for status items. Note: If you are playing in Challenge Mode or Versus, your partner's life bar will be indicated underneath yours as a thin green line. Ditto for the enemy's partner. At position (9), there will be a LOCKON alert and ENE 1 and ENE 2 beneath it. This will indicate which enemy has locked onto you. In Challenge mode, the total time will be indicated in location (7), replacing the repair discs number. The Radar will be placed above location (8) and the life guage indicators occupy the ex-radar space. In Versus mode, your partner's life and yours will be indicated by a total percentage of 200%. This indicator will occupy location (5). Radar location will shift to location (8). << Radar Map Legends >> Note that blue will always represent friendly units while red represents enemy units. Note: I have never gotten FAKE or LUCKY before so I have no idea what it does. Anyone who has gotten these items before, please mail me on what it does! Thanks! =========================================================================== = VIRTUAROID INFORMATION = =========================================================================== And now, for the section that we all can't do without. ^_^ This section'll deal with the VR ratings and their armnaments. Personally, I think some of these VRs have overly dramatised / silly names for weapons but then again, that's just me. This list is compiled from the manual, the game and VO Marz's website. While I have personally checked each VR's stats myself and tested the moves myself, mistakes do occur. If you spot a mistake in here or if I have left something out, please do email me about it. Let's move on. Each individual VR will be firstly represented by their body code in << >> brackets, followed by their name. VR statistics follow after this and they are based on a score out of 10. VR LW, RW and CW weapon names follow after this which will be followed by the special moves that each of them can perform, followed by execution method enclosed in [ ] brackets after it. Method of obtaining this unit is explained at the very last. ^^ :: NOTICE!! :: As my PS2 is currently under servicing, this section currently only has VRs updated from VO Marz's website. Next update, all VRs listing will be complete. In the meantime, please see Eizaz's comprehensive FAQ on VR listing until this section is complete. =) ------------------- VIRTUAROIDS LIST ------------------- = TEMJIN 747 SERIES = << MZV-747-J >> TEMJIN 747 J Infight : 7/10 Shot (short) : 7/10 Shot (Middle): 6/10 Shot (Long : 5/10 Mobility : 7/10 LW: Power Bomb Mk 3 RW: Sleipner Mk4 - Neutral Launcher CW: Sleipner Mk4 - Breach Sabre Special Moves: Blue Slider 747 [Air, fwd dash + CW] - Requires all weapons guage to be at 100%. If you even want to proceed with the game and pass the higher difficulties, certain tactics have to be observed which I consider as essential to the gameplay of Marz. Button mashing is pointless as a friend has proven and will often lead you to your doom sooner than you expect. I don't profess myself to be an expert on the tactical aspects on Virtual On as Nyan puts it, I have just about as much tactical sense as a rock on high. This section will rather however, give some common advice on how to use some of the common tactics that veterans use and hopefully, you will be able to implement them into your own style of playing. Your very own style of playing is important to you as well and I place this as top priority when you are trying out in Virtual On. It defines yourself as a pilot. This list will be constantly updated as I experiment further with Marz. =) Without further ado, let's begin: :: LINE OF SIGHT :: I can't stress this tactic enough. Effective gameplay always equates to having your enemy within your line of sight ALL THE TIME. Having your opponent within your line of sight also means that you'll be able to see almost every single thing he/she/it will be throwing at you. Knowing what your opponent is going to toss at you is of utmost importance, especially if you are playing on a stage that is lightly obstacled. Imagine having your back to an Apharmd J Type C and not seeing that CW CC coming until it's too late! Always use jump cancels (press JUMP button followed by GUARD / CROUCH button) to effectively re-orient yourself to face the opponent. Jump cancels are the simplest and yet most effective tactic all aspiring VO pilots SHOULD (not TRY!) to incorporate into their playing styles. This is the beginning step and is one of the most basic foundation tactic that you should learn ASAP. You know you have executed a good and effective jump cancel when you see your VR do a quick hop on the spot and turn to face the opponent. :: MOVEMENT :: ALWAYS KEEP MOVING! Anyone with enough common sense should know that constant movement on a battlefield will make it harder for the enemy to hit you and Marz is no different. Any VR not moving is just screaming to be hit. Any veteran can tell you the usefulness of this tactic. Not only does it keep you in constant motion, thus making it harder for the enemy to hit you, you can also use movement to play mind games with the opfor. Mix and match the types of movement for a confusing gameplay. Opponent thinks you are going to dash? Walk instead. Opponent thinks you're going to charge right at him? Vector jump. Never EVER be predictable in your movement either. You will only be setting yourself up to walk into your opponent's trap. Never also, dash till it expires. Against a rookie, you might have chances of pulling it off safely. Against veterans, they will set up attacks (sometimes with very painful ones) that will either hit you as you dash or when you recover from it. Unless you feel like dying an idiot's death, always use dash cancels for any emergency evasion moves. The dash cancel is another good tactical move to add to your playing style. This is performed by pressing the Turbo button again during your dash. Of course, I needn't to mention that charging directly and straight on at an enemy is stupid too. Raiden's Lasers anyone? :: ATTACKING :: The primary focus of any versus game is to try and deplete your opponent's life before he depletes yours. VO is no different but attacking blindly and carelessly might just turn the tables on you in no time. The following paragraph will seek to highlight some of the moves best avoid whenever possible and an explaination of why: = Jump Attacks So you decide that ground attacks are not effective against your opponent. So you take to the air, trying to knock him or her down. To your massive horror as you reach the apex of your jump, the last thing you see on your screen is a pair of nice shiny lasers before your VR drops limply to the ground, exploding. The above scenario seems simplistically stupid but also one I have seen repeated countless of times. Never EVER try jumping attacks (that is, jump and attack) unless you want to die an idiot's death. Jumping attacks have been watered down a great deal in Marz and this is even more evident in the loss of the ability to fire two weapons in the air for the Myzr / Cypher / Viper series, so it is recommended you don't do jump attacks. It'll definitely play the biggest role in saving you from nasty counterattacks. If you must (die die also must do) aerial attacks, make sure you at least will hit with whatever you're throwing at the opponent or throw a diversionary weaponry as you come down. Angelan is rather adept at the latter tactic. If not, pray you land on top or behind an obstacle as you land. Else... = Dashing Attacks Don't get me wrong. Dashing attacks are useful when used properly but just about too many times I have seen people overly abusing dashing attacks, thinking its a "god" tactic. Note that once you start dashing AND attacking, you cannot stop your dash until it expires on its own. Repeat same counterattack sequence here. If you need to execute a dashing attack of any sort, here are two tips on doing so: - Dash AFTER your enemy has done so. - Attack when you're nearing the end of your dash. The former is useful as you can dash and attack the opponent at the point where his dash has ended and he is in the recovery animation. In range and want a classy attack? Try a dashing CC. The latter is not exactly as useful as the first. Basically, it entails attacking when you're nearing the end of your dash so that it basically provides a cover of some sorts as your VR slows to a stop. The recovery for this isn't all that great either. Try not to dash attack too much as the individual VRs turning rate and accuracy in dashing attack has been greatly tuned down. Unless you're going straight with the enemy within your sights, your chances of hitting the enemy would be slim. Read COUNTERATTACK. = EVASION = ALWAYS KEEP MOVING! Another point that I pride as a first in VO tactics. Moving makes it harder for enemy to keep a lock on you and that's exactly what you want isn't it? Movement for VRs can come in different styles and sorts. You can walk, dash, jump or mix all three for one hell of a confusing gameplay to your opponent. Watari dashing - the art of changing directions 90 degrees to your current trajectory direction - is perhaps one of the best moves any pilot can master for evasion / counterattack. You execute this by tapping your desired direction while your VR is in the midst of a dash. Unfortunately, Marz seems to have toned down the duration of VR's dash so at most you can watari is 1-2 times. Multiple watari in a single dash is not recommended for Marz because of the long turning time it takes for a VR to lock onto its target, not to mention that the AI is exceptionally good at evasion, especially in Ultimate mode. ==X Use the various obstacles around the stage to your advantage but please, do NOT hide behind them all the time. You'll be ultimately branded cheap by the fanatics. Besides, VRs who have insane CC range like the Temjins, can CC you through the obstacle, so be careful when trying to hide behind one while an enemy is on the other side. :: GUAGE MANAGEMENT :: Not actually ranked very high on the importance list but it still commands a decent amount of attention, depending on the player type you are. Careful and tactical use of your guage will always ensure that you have your desired weapon at the time you need it. This is important, especially when facing against a veteran who knows exactly what he or she is doing. You don't want to be caught guageless at the point when you need it. It might just cost you your round / game. To effectively manage your guage, you of course will need to roughly memorise exactly how much guage a move takes off while executing. While this will take sometime to get accquainted to, do so as fast at your own convinence. It will help to save your life in the long run. Hyper bombardment players are most adept at managing their guages, thus making them highly dangerous as they can throw out move after move, flooding you with shots that will force you to focus on evasion instead of assault. Challenge with caution. :: STAGE KNOWLEDGE :: In effect, this is considered side tactic and not at all exactly very important but useful when it comes to having that lil' bit of advantage over your opponent. Some fanatics / veterans have taken to memorising the stage layouts and locations of obstacles so that they can set up very painful counter / traps for you. If you want to, you can do so at your own leisure. =) In short, Virtual On is not just about trying to beat the crap out of your opponently mindlessly, button mashing or throwing out the most powerful weapon you have in your arsenal and hoping to win. The aim of VO lies mostly in smart playing and that means to fight in such a way that the enemy will have a hard time trying to find loopholes in your attacks and you leaving none for him to sniff. Its all about how to whack your opponent while making him run circles trying to hit you. Experiment and find your own style of playing that suits you. Different playing styles suit different people and interesting varients come along that way.
