Steve H) You've played, Tekken 2 , Fighting Vipers, Virtua Fighter 2 (yippie!), the Street Fighter Alpha's, and UMK3 (yech!) "Why should I play this?" you may ask yourself. Well, because you won't regret it. I am an avid VF2 player, but it has aged, so I tried Tekken 2 but it wasn't that hot, so I was bored. Then Soul Edge came to my local arcade. Zowie! New game...as good, if not better, looking than VF2...and gameplay I was used to... I couldn't lose. So I popped in fifty cents and was instantly hooked. This game uses the System 11 hardware by Namco (duh), which is all but a Playstation on steroids. This hardware, while dated (Tekken and Tekken 2 used this board) obviously still has a few tricks up it's sleeve. This will most likely be the last Namco game to use this board before the System 22 board (Alpine Racer) is in widespread use. The game itself revolves around a group of eight fighters from around the world (yeah, I know this sounds familiar), but what makes this game different is that they are from obviously different times. How these fighters came to be in one tournament is still unclear, but it makes for a terrific game. The game looks very much like VF2 in the sense that the characters are polygonal and very impressive, but the backgrounds are fully rendered, move, and the time of day changes. What makes this game different from other Namco fighters is that the animation is smooth, and the gameplay is intuitive. b)conventions used in this FAQ (G)=Guard (defense) (A)=Attack (horizontal) (B)=Attack (vertical) (K)=Kick (WC) =in the process of crouching (WS) =in the process of standing f,b,u or d = Forward, Back, Up, Down HCB =half (semi) circle backwards (for,down/for,down,down/back,back). HCF =half (semi) circle forwards (back,down/back,down,down/for,for). QCB =quarter circle backwards (down,down/back,back). QCF =quarter circle forwards (down,down/for,for). $*$ =move/combo is UNCONFIRMED c)control layout This FAQ assumes that the layout of the controls are as follows: (A) (B) (K) (G) d)character selection This is pretty straight forward if you have played a fighting game before. After your fifty cents (or whatever the price may be) has been deposited and you hit start the character selection screen will come up. Here you push left or right on the joystick to select your character of choice. As you move the cursor from the small portraits on the bottom of the screen, the large portrait in the center of the screen will change. II)BASIC GAMEPLAY As per all fighting games, two characters face off against each other in a some what limited "arena". As one character beats on the other health from the health bar at the top of the screen is lost. What makes his game different is the blocking. As you block, yellow "sparks" fly. When this happens energy from your flaming sword meter just below your health bar drops. When this becomes empty, you loose your weapon and you can no longer block without losing health. You can still block, but some damage still gets through. Because you use energy from the flaming sword meter to perform the A+B+K moves, you must ration this energy so you don't lose your weapon. Also, when the flaming sword meter becomes empty you can no longer perform the A+B+K moves. As per Virtua Fighter, you can be forced out of the ring, giving your opponent the win (more info on this later). a)general moves The buttons: (A)=Attack 1(horizontal ?) (B)=Attack 2(vertical ?) (K)=Kick Hopping attacks: up+(A) (ascending)=short hop with an attack on the way up up,(A) (descending)=short hop with an attack on the way down or directly after landing. up/for+(A)=same as above, but hops a few feet forward up/back+(A)=same as above, but hops a few feet backward note: you can substitute B or K for A in the above moves, yielding a different attack when B is used or a kick when K is used. I am also not yet sure what happens when the buttons are hit while you are descending. Jumping attacks: UP+(A)=High jump, usually with an attack on the way down (?) UP/FOR+(A)=High jump forward, usually with an attack on the way down UP/BACK+(A)=High jump backward, usually with an attack on the way down note: you can substitute B or K for A in the above moves, yielding a different attack when B is used. When K is used, however, the character executes a jump kick on the way up. I am also not yet sure what happens when the buttons are hit while you are descending. Rising moves: up + (G) = roll away from camera down + (G) = roll towards camera forward = roll forwards back = roll backwards (K)=kick low (B)=kick mid note: also, the faster you press buttons and the controller, the faster you get up. note: it is also possible to get up with an attack with your weapon, I am not sure as of yet how to do this, but I am pretty sure you use A. note: you can use two of the above (only one attack) after you have been knocked to the ground. Sidesteps: down, down=step towards camera down,up=step away from camera note: use down,up,down to sidestep away from the camera because if for whatever reason it doesn't work (the sidestep) you won't hop into the air and leave yourself vulnerable. Sliding Tackle/Grab: (while running)forward, forward + (K) note: it is called a sliding tackle/grab because some characters just knock the opponent down, others do a throw-type move. Throws: (G)+(A)=Throw 1 (varies by character) (G)+(B)=Throw 2 (varies by character) note: the characters have more throws as well, these are just the ones that are shared by all the characters. note: all characters have different throws after their weapon has been lost. Ground Pounce: up + (A) or (B) = Low pounce Hold up + (A) or (B) = High pounce note: the high pounce takes off more damage, but takes longer. note: some characters can also pounce using a different button. When Weapons Lock: Not a move that can be performed at will, this sometimes happens when two powerful attacks collide. This is like when in a cinematic sword fight, the two people come very near to each other the weapons, locked between them, and the stronger one pushes the other backwards. (A)=High attack (B)=Mid attack (K)=Low Attack (sweep) (A)+(B)+(K)= If you and your opponent both press all 3 buttons, you will both be knocked back and no damage will be done to either players. note: it is recommended that you tap one button repeatedly during the time when the weapons are locked. (A)+(B)+(K) Moves This is the most complicated of the general moves. When all three are hit at the same time a portion of your flaming sword meter will flash. If the opponent is not blocking when this is hit, your character performs an automatic 4 (approx.) hit combo. Beware, for if the opponent blocks, you still loose the sword meter energy. When this is performed when your opponent has only a little life left and is unblocked, your character performs a type of "fatality" which is the original 4 hit combo plus a few (sometimes many) extra strikes, which are usually rather amusing. b)basic moves strategy *COUNTERING THROWS* *COUNTER BLOCKING* ect.... III)CHARACTER BY CHARACTER These are in no particular order. This includes all the special moves specific to each character that are know as of the writing of this FAQ. The next version will offer insight as to the use and strategy of these moves. a)Li Long - --==MOVES==-- - Rope Attatcher: b+(A) Low Blow f+(A) Rope Skipper: db+(A) Turn Around: HCB Turn Around Slice: HCB+(A) Crazy Windmill: (A)+(B) Twin Arrow: f,(A)+(B) Upward Swipe: db+(B) Straight Stab: f,f+(B) Punisher Whip: f,hold f+(B) Nunchuku Foot Spin: QCF+(B) Turn Around/Stab Backwards: HCB+(B) Hopping Side Kick: df+(K) Leg Take Down: f,hold f+(K) - --==COMBOS==-- - Thunderstorm: (A),(A),(A) 2 slices and low slice: (A),(A),d+(A) Low slice and high slice: d+(A),d+(K) Jackhammer: (A),(A),(K) 2 Slices and leg sweep: (A),(A),d+(K) 2 Slices, leg sweep, slice: (A),(A),d+(K),(B) 2 High slices and a kick: (A),(B),(K) 2 High slices and low kick: (A),(A),d+(K) A slice, then another slice: d+(A),u+(B) Hail Storm: (B),(B),(B) 3 Slices: df+(B),(B),(B) 2 Slices: (B),(A) 2 Slices: db+(B),(A) Slice then kick: (B),(K) 2 Straight stabs: f,f+(B),(B) Twin Harpoon: (K),(K) Harpoon Driller: (K),d+(K) Kick and slice: (K),d+(A) - --==THROWS==-- - Leg Hook: (G)+(A) Neck breaker and slash: (G)+(B) - --==GROUND ATTACKS==-- - Quick Stomp: u+(A) or (B) Hard Stomp: hold u+(A) or (B) Foot Stomp: df+(K) - --==CRITICAL EDGE==-- - (A)+(B)+(K) Extender..... f, hold f+(A)+(B) b) Mitsurugi Heijiroh - --==MOVES==-- - Power Spinning High Slice: b+(A) Shin Slicer: db+(A) Steel Slicer: (A)+(B) Phoenix Tail: f,f+(A)+(B) Wasp Stinger: f+(B) Thunder Strike: f,f+(B) Leg Sweep: d+(K) Side Kick: df+(K) Straight Kick: b+(K) - --==COMBOS==-- - No Escape: (A),(A),(A) 2 High Slices, Low Slice: (A),(A),d+(A) Windstorm: (A),(A),(B) Three Punches(w/o weapon): (A),(B),(A) 2 High, 1 Mid, Upward: (B),(B),(A),(B) 2 High, 1 Mid, Low Slice: (B),(B),(A),d+(A) Leg Sweeper: f+(K),(B) Sweep to an Upward Slice: d+(K),(B) Forward Kick, Downward Slice: b+(K),(B) - --==THROWS==-- - Triple Power Slice: (G)+(A) Front and Back Slice: (G)+(B) Over the Shoulder(w/o weapon): (G)+(A) Spinning Back Throw(w/o weapon): (G)+(B) - --==GROUND ATTACKS==-- - Quick Sword Drive: u+(A) or (B) Hard Sword Drive: hold u+(A) or (B) Sword Stab: df+(B) - --==CRITICAL EDGE==-- - (A)+(B)+(K) Extender.....
