INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Pepsiman' for the Playstation, released by KID in 1999. The game was only released in Japan but is almost entirely in English with Japanese subtitles for the English audio. It is not vital to understand Japanese for any parts of the game so you can play the it easily. Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== Main Menu: `````````` • Game Start Start a new game • Free Play Pick a scene to play for beating the time and find more cans • Expert Mode Start a new game in expert mode (must be unlocked first) • Option Change the options of the game, see below • Load Load a saved game • Save Save the game Saving: you can really only use this option after being kicked back to the title screen after losing all your lives. The game makes no mention of this, and it took a little while for me to figure it out, so I thought it might be worth throwing in for the sake of other confused gamers. The game will save at the last level where you died (though I don't recall if it takes you to the exact scene you were on, or makes you begin the entire level again). Option: ``````` Sound: Stereo/Mono Vibration: On/Off Pepsiman: New/Old/Wire (available once you beat the game) Key Config: 4 types of pre-set configurations Basics: ``````` The aim of the game is to get through the level within the given time limit. There are two secondary objectives of collecting all 100 Pepsi cans within a level and setting the fastest time to get through. Collecting cans helps improve your health and yields extra lifes whereas the best time is just for keeping record. You get benefits for picking up the Pepsi cans: • 10 Pepsi cans to refresh one health. • 20 Pepsi cans for an extra life at the of the level (100=5 lifes), on Expert Mode you only get an extra life for each 25 cans. • I think you unlock Expert mode if you collect all 800 Pepsi cans in the game. There are three levels (called scenes) in a stage. The first two will have the camera following (chase cam) you as you go through collecting Pepsi cans and reaching the Pepsi machine at the end. The last one will always be a chase and the camera is in front of you (lead cam?). The third one is the trickiest and describing it is hard as you have to react much quicker than reading about it. Controls: ````````` The action buttons are set in the configuration and depend on your choice. Press UP and the slide button to dash. This might make you faster and is a good way to save time off your record but will play with the timing of the game events. For example, if you dash at a trash van sequence you are more likely to be hit by its trash. However, some parts of the game require you to dash and it is also possible to dash THROUGH walls and other obstacles, often to advance in the game unharmed (which you also must do to reach those out-of-the-way Pepsi cans). Another move is to dash-jump over holes, yet again to reach those Pepsi cans but also for some areas in the game you otherwise could not progress. Simple do a dash and then jump to perform this trick. While in the trashcan the directions are reversed and you are also much slower to steer. Look ahead and plan accordingly. Stopping: If you hold back while pressing square, Pepsiman will briefly come to a screeching halt, which can help (or hinder!) when trying to time moving obstacles. This can also be useful if you miss a Pepsi can on the conveyor belts in the Pepsi factory, as stopping on a rear- flowing conveyor will propel you backwards a bit. Select and Start will reset the game immediately. Display: ```````` The top left has your collected Pepsi cans, followed by a Pepsi icon representing your health. It shrinks as you get hurt and the smallest variant will flash to indiciate you are almost dead. Fill it up by collecting those Pepsi cans! The number in the middle is the timer. When this reaches zero you die and return to the last checkpoint. As far as I know you are screwed if the timer is already bad when you reach a checkpoint and have no way of making it to the end. The small diagram in the top right is your position on the track. It shows how far you have made it within the scene and the time you have needed so far. This is useful for setting records as well. Lastly, the bottom right is the number of lives you have left. You lose a life for falling down into pitfalls or getting hit by large vehicles. Most other cases just have you falling down and lose health, as well as cost you time and changing the scene events slightly of course. =============================================================================== 03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300 =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 1 G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scene 1: ```````` The first and second scene are rather easy to play and I will just note the locations of the Pepsi cans. You should really not have much trouble in these levels else I suggest you practice because the other levels are a lot, lot harder compares to these. [02/002] After first crossing. [05/007] After second crossing. [03/010] Before fourth crossing. [07/017] In the first garden. [08/025] In-between manholes. [05/030] Sliding under the Pepsi truck. [10/040] Before, in, and after the first house. [23/063] While in the trash can. [10/073] Before, in, and after the second and third houses. Watch for one just behind the couch on the left as you enter! [04/077] Road stretch just after checkpoint. [03/080] After trash van sequence. [06/086] During moving van sequence. [14/100] On the final stretch. Scene 2: ```````` [02/002] On the first street stretch. [06/008] Sliding under the Pepsi truck. [03/011] On the second street stretch. [24/035] In the construction area (the last jump requires dash-jumping). [12/047] In and around the first house (requires a dash through the window). [05/052] While on the skateboard before the tunnel. [32/084] While on the skateboard after the tunnel (hang right around the yellow card and do not jump too early at the end). [08/092] During moving fan sequence. Slide through the first piece of furniture if necessary. [06/098] On the final stretch before the Pepsi van. [02/100] On the final stretch after the Pepsi van. Scene 3: ```````` Stay in the middle. Shortly after the start is a second bunch of trash cans on the right. Jump over the barricades twice. After a bunch of trash cans on the left tag left too. Jump over the barricade. Stay on the left and watch for a Pepsi machine on the right. This indicates you must jump over the bikes. Slightly steer right or actually do so while jumping over the bikes and stay in the dead center, going slightly right as you progress. Go back in the dead center after a short while and just keep jumping over the objects in the way. You could try to swerve around them but I find it more tricky. Do not get stuck in the barrels near the end as you will just get rolled over instantly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 2 G0320 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scene 1: ```````` [01/001] Behind manhole cover before first junction; jump over the cars at the junction [04/005] Shortly after junction on right of flaming squad car [03/008] After first junction before police car pulls in fron the right [03/011] In a bundle on the right before second junction; watch out for police car turning right - JUMP! [07/018] Stay on the right for the oil barrels, when you get the third Pepsi can at the flaming car you should quickly go to the left side to grab the fourth and then back to the right for the rest. [24/042] You cannot do any moves but turn left and right, harder than it sounds. Move left and right to grab all 24 Pepsi cans. Some on the left and right are a little tricky to reach. The last bump into the barrels cannot be avoided but you do not take damage. [03/045] After barrel roll sequence behind manhole cover. Immediately turn to the left side to avoid the oncoming car and then start running right again to reach the checkpoint unharmed. [09/054] Before construction yard (includes 1 when sliding under barricade). For the next part you need to jump over the board, avoid the plank held by the worker and then DASH past the digger to overtake it. Time your run past the next digger. [10/064] On ramp to bridge, keep sliding underneath those workers' planks [36/100] On the unfinished bridge. This is one really long sequence of slides and jumps. There is one part that requires a dash jump to reach the Pepsi cans and one time you need to make sure to grab the can without turning right too early as it is just after a gap. Once you reach construction workers you know it is nearly done. The last digger is a little surprising. Scene 2: ```````` [11/011] From starting point slide under the pipe, then jump over the pipe and then do a running jump over the gap to grab the other cans. [11/022] Do a running jump over the next gap to grab the cans in the air, then dash through the right blockade (if you hit the metal bars you will lose health) to grab the Pepsis behind there and will you still dash you want to go left and crash through the blockade there which also holds a bunch of Pepsi cans. [10/032] Do a simple jump and there are two after the previous part just on side. Next up is a jump over a pipe followed by a dash jump to grab the other eight Pepsi cans on this stretch. [10/042] There is a blockade on the left only up ahead and this indicates some hidden Pepsi cans. In fact, 10 are hiding if you just dash through this part and the dash should also keep you going over the small gap behind it. [02/044] Before reaching the train tracks are two crates which can be dashed through to find two Pepsi cans in total. [15/059] At the start of the train tracks in plain sight. [05/064] On the next train section where you MUST dash to get through. This is followd with a rather simple jump and slide part but be careful of the shovel on the ground at one point you might not expect. [05/069] On the third train section where you also MUST dash. [07/076] After the third train section is a long jump and a dash jump will get you across with all these Pepsi cans in tow. Do not forget to jump over onto the platform instead of stumbling! [24/100] On the platform and roof that follows, this is more like one large section. First you need to dash through the passangers on the platform and go up the stairs, then jump the turnstile and up another staircase with a lone Pepsi can. Up there are more passengers and you have to either avoid or dash through them depending on your speed here. If you want all the cans then I suggest taking it slow up there. If you are unlucky and bump into someone just before the rooftops then you will not have a running start across. Dash jump over to the other side and follow this up with a couple of more jumps to the... destination. Scene 3: ```````` This takes more quick reaction than I can describe here. The first stage at least had some easy pointers but it makes more sense to just wing this rather than read about a strategy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 3 G0330 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scene 1: ```````` You are on a straight road and have traffic coming from both ways. All the cans are across the path but getting them all is tricky if not close to impossible without bumping into anything. You sometimes have to just take a hit else you cannot reach it. In addition to cars you also have boulders rolling in from the side. [22/022] On first stretch. Keep going left and right without using and speed alterations and you should be fine without getting hit. The last stretch has a bunch of cans where you can dash a little for a time improvement. [19/041] During lumber truck sequence. This involves alternating between jumping and sliding. It gets very fast near the end and not getting a few Pepsi cans is not uncommon. [05/046] At corner once lumber truck. [22/068] During next sequence you need to avoid the bikes coming from the back while also avoiding them once they park on the midle of the road. Jumping over them is ideal. Near the end you need to jump over two in a row. [12/080] Dash through the boulders as you grab the cans and avoid the cars on the left. [10/090] Once you see the large Pepsi advert with the woman in a bikini, stay on right and dash forward to reach the two bottles. Keep on dashing as this way you will keep ahead of the bikes that are coming from behind you. [10/100] This trail of Pepsis starts before the car wash. You will automatically turn. The only thing left to do is slide under the last brush. Scene 2: ```````` We are replacing vehicles with bulls now. [16/016] After you slalom around the boulders, stay in the middle and dash forward. You should be getting through the boulders really well. Dash again and pick up the Pepsis. Let the bull pass you in the middle and go normal speed until you eventually see another bull on the right after a boulder. This indicites you want to dash now as you will get by all the bulls coming from the sides. Take it easy again from here. [12/028] Dash forward into the long row of Pepsi cans. Jump over the oncoming bull and quickly go right to avoid the one coming in diagonally. The rest up to the checkpoint is rather easy. [14/045] This is rather straight-forward since you cannot do any moves but steer awkwardly. Dash through the crates before the mine entrance to grab three more cans and also dash through the actual mine entrance barricade. [28/073] These minecarts bounce off the wall and around half-way into the track again. Be aware to get around them with enough space for buffer. Dash through the first crate for a semi-hidden can, then you can take it normal speed until you reach some broken track. Normal jumps are fine here and make the dash underneath the falling board. [13/086] Slide under the board, dash forward to dash-jump the gap and stay on the left side to then dash again when the cart has gone from left to right else you will get caught by another one shortly after. Stay in the middle at normal speed and jump the gap to grab the Pepsi, then quickly jump on the left side to get over the mine cart as well as the other one shortly after. Keep jumping the next cart and the board (I do not recommend sliding as it gives you too little time doing so and the boulder behind there does not really cause any harm to you at this point). [14/100] Jump the lone cart on the bridge. Jump over the fallen board while grabbing both Pepsi cans and steer right to avoid the boulder. This next board is a tricky one as the second Pepsi is super right in front of it. You will most likely fall here but still better than getting flattened by the boulder. Avoid the oncoming minecards by jumping over them, then follow the Pepsi line to grab the final lot. Dash through the mine exit to complete the scene. Scene 3: ```````` This pile of lumber will periodically let a log go into your direction. This starts out easy by just half-sized logs but eventually adds flying ones that hit you while jumping, long logs that take up the entire width of the road and eventually combinations of the two. Good news is that it starts out easy and the first half of the level is almost complete by the time the trickier logs are thrown. Here is the sequence of logs: R L R L C R L R C R L 4 long one + high R with the last log R L R C Long R L R Long + high R Long + high L That is it already. If you know the sequence then this is rather easy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 4 G0340 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scene 1: ```````` [02/002] Right at the start you can dash but if you do it just one second too late then do not bother as you will run into the upcoming car. Go around the parked truck and then stay left to avoid the oncoming traffic. [04/006] Go right around the guy and then steer left to grab the next cans. A sign will fall up ahead next to an already-fallen one and this jump to get the can is kind of tricky. [07/013] Slide under the truck and grab the cans just before the sequence starts with the truck. [07/020] During the Pepsi Truck Sequence. Keep going left and right to grab those cans, the last one is just as the sequence is done. [05/025] Along this path there are just some minor obstacles and a truck to avoid. [14/039] This part is a little tougher as you have to squeeze through the gap of cans and cars. Stay right to avoid the falling road sign and then grab the can on the left. Continue around the burning truck and stay right to avoid the car. Then go left to avoid the next one as well as the trucks. After you slide underneath the delivery truck you need to jump to avoid the car coming from the right! [14/053] While in the trash can you need to quickl steer right (well, left, but going right) and then always look ahead of where to go. This is again tight to get through. [29/082] Grab the can on the left, then go around the small object to get the next one. Jump over the low barrier as well as the gap. Do a running jump to grab the cans here and then avoid the burning car ahead, stay left but I do not suggest do a running jump here. You can, but you might as well do a simple jump to grab the Pepsis and then hold right to land on safety and giving you more time to prepare for the next two small jumps. This next one is a killer: Stay left and do a running jump across the gap. Quickly (and I mean super quickly) do a tiny jump diagnonally and jump again right away to avoid the falling sign. This is followed by another small jump and then you have to perform a running jump after the barrier to get the Pepsi cans here. If you do all this right you have mastered the game, seriously. [18/100] A rather easy end compared what was just now. Do a normal jump followed up by a running jump and then dash the rest of the way. Make sure you dash through the barrier. Scene 2: ```````` [08/008] Easy start. Note how the floors work for and against your flow and will therefore slow you down in some cases or make you go super fast another. Grab the first few cans you see, avoiding the sign in the process and also the left can is easily missed after the gap. Dash through the boxes on the right and jump to avoid the gap. Ahead you will automatically slow down. [21/029] Dash once to reach the can and then go left for the second. Do not dash again or else you will go way too fast in the next section. From now on you want to dash where possible. Else you fail the upcoming section where a crate will move up and the left side is blocked. You aim is to go really fast and just get by. Luckily there is no pitfall if you fail here. Eventually you reach a door you have to time your way through. [23/052] Make your way past the pipes, this is rather obvious. If you do not want all Pepsi cans then there are always some easy paths like low pipes you can jump over instead of just squeezing through a gap to get the can. [30/082] This sequence requires less strategy and mainly reflexes. The low boxes can be jumped and the large one sometimes hover and can be slid under. Your main focus is avoidance of course. The last bit is the hardest and I think you must dash through it else they will bump you over. No pitfalls here so it is not too bad if you get hit. [18/100] This is fast and furious, getting the last few Pepsi cans requires good boarding. You can actually jump here but there is no need. Avoid the boxes as wel. Scene 3: ```````` This is the last level. It plays like the previous stage's third game where you have to avoid the logs just this time there are large Pepsi cans and they only take up a quarter of width. This means that they occupy more complicated space for you avoid. Later on there will also be can thrown high up and you cannot jump over them any more. By this time luckily you are almost three quarters through the level. Overall I found this level easier than the first two third stages of the game. The game is now complete and credits roll. You now unlock Free Play and Old Pepsiman. Some more things to aim for: - Wire Pepsiman: Get all 100 Pepsi cans in all levels. - Expert Mode: Complete the game in short times. - Stelth Pepsiman: Complete Expert Mode. Expert Mode lets you play the same game but with less health and a tighter timer. You also gain less lifes at the end of the level for your collected Pepsi cans. =============================================================================== YY.)
