INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Ripple Island' for the NES, released by Sunsoft in 1988. It was only released in Japan. You may see this listed as "Lipple Island" somewhere, because L and R are both pronounced L in Japanese the writing does not matter too much. It should, however, be written with 'R' seeing that it's an attempt to sound English. The guide uses Shift-JIS to display Japanese characters in .txt form. If you cannot see them automatically and just see some garbled font, set your browser encoding or file viewer manually. This game is a text adventure. To play you need to have extensive knowledge of the Japanese language. Thus this walkthrough is intended for players who are able to read and understand the story. You can still try to match the actions to the displayed characters, but if you do not understand the storyline then there is little point in playing the game. Should there ever be a fan translation I will try to get a good guide in English to match it. This game is hardly known outside of Japan, and with text-heavy adventure games it is very unlikely somebody will take the long time and effort to make a fan translation. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) OVERVIEW & CONTROLS G0200 =============================================================================== The game is split into five areas. Each area has puzzles to solve by itself and items do not need to carry over. There are also several different endings you can achieve, but only one that is the real ending. The display is also quite basic. The top half of the screen is the current location. Each area has around 20-30 locations and they might change over the course of the story. The center has the actions icons that are used to play the game. Underneath is the text area, usually reserved for story text but it also displays your inventory when selected. The actions icons have more than one meaning: Move - Look - Talk - Take - Inventory - Enter - Pull - Push - Password Give Knock Use =============================================================================== 03.) MINI-REVIEW GYY00 =============================================================================== This isn't meant to be a full review, just a few notes about the game's pros and cons as well as other things worth mentioning. Gameplay: 5/10 A little too kiddie to my liking, but sweet and short areas that still contain a few good puzzles. The main problem with the puzzles is that a lot is pixel hunting. If you are just missing one item the game cannot progress, and you don't always know what you are missing. One area in particular requires to TAKE the screen pixel by pixel, and there are more than 20 locations to search. Graphics: 7/10 Not too shabby, some blocky characters but the areas have colorful items and detailed at that. So for 1988 this was just about acceptable. Compared to other adventure games on the NES, this actually has moving things instead of the pale and stale screen you interact with. Sound: 6/10 Overall: 6/10 Short but ok adventure game. A little tricky for what looks like a kid's game. =============================================================================== ZZ.)
