Lyrics were sort of included in the official OST booklet, but they tended to be incorrect and incomplete. Me being the kindly fellow that I am decided to take down the lyrics myself, with exception of Hot Limit and Rhythm & Police. Hot Limit was mostly taken directly from the OST booklet because it _looked_ correct and I wouldn't have even come close doing them by ear anyway ^_^ I just fixed a few things (including incorrect verse placement or nonexistant verses). As for Rhythm and Police, check elsewhere for lyrics, because anything I come up with would be horrendously wrong. Take one dash of Dance Maniax, a tablespoon of Para Para Paradise, and add a pinch of mocap BOXING and you'll get Martial Beat. The game requires you to punch and kick as shown by commands and the on-screen instructor (also known as the Martial Beat Master). Several styles are featured, including Karate, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing. And yes, it is a glorified Activator ^_^ Q. Oh, so Martial Beat is a Bemani game? A. Bemani is the name given to games in Konami's music game series. Examples include Beatmania, Dance Dance Revolution, Para Para Paradise, and Dance Maniax. While it does have songs from Dancemania (in fact, all of the songs in Martial Beat have appeared in Dance Dance Revolution)and is undeniably music-based, it isn't officially classified as Bemani. On Konami's arcade game list, Martial Beat is under the category "Video Game and Simulation Game" and is NOT listed under the Bemani category. Q. Is Martial Beat available for a home system? A. Yes, in a strange move, Konami released Martial Beat for the original Playstation (PSX or PsOne) only a bit after they released the arcade version. The games don't interact with each other, and there don't appear to be any PSX-only extras (though oddly enough, Dub-I-Dub is now a hidden song). The game comes with strap-on controllers for arms and ankles, plus a sensor that detects when you punch or kick for 12 800 yen (about 100+ USD). The Konami Style store (www.konamistyle.com) seems to have it for 11 520 yen though. Currently the only online import store that carries it is www.toysnjoys.com They have it for $129.95. Thanks to Shin Star, it's been confirmed that the PSX version has DDR-style short edits of the songs Since all of the songs have been featured in DDR, we can assume they used the DDR edits. Not sure yet if the arcade version has long versions, bu even if it does have the short edits, you should still be able to find the lyrics to the verses. Also, Shin Star mentions that the PSX version is missing stuff that the arcade game has (combo meter, gauge), probably because the PSX version is being geared more by Konami to be a fitness game. Q. How do I unlock the hidden songs? A. I'm not sure about the arcade version (in which you must unlock Lupin the 3rd '78), but in the PSX version, according to Konami's website, you must clear Attack Mode once to unlock Mirror Mode and Dub-I-Dub along with it. Clear Attack Mode once more to unlock Lupin. Q. You can't have a good music game without good songs, so what songs are included? A. Martial Beat gets ALL of its music from Dancemania. The only Konami Original is in the ending I think. As for which series Konami combed to get music for Martial Beat, the songs come from Dancemania X3, Diamond, FantasiA, J-Paradise, and Happy Paradise. It's technically an odd set of songs, and could be considered a "Best of" Dancemania, but with newer, more recent releases available, it's a mystery as to why they didn't use songs not already featured in Dance Dance Revolution. Oh well, I personally think the song list makes for some good listening, no matter how seemingly ancient it is. You can find the songs and which albums they were taken from in the lyrics section. Q. Why is "Theme from Enter the Dragon" not in the game? Or for that matter, "Kung Fu Fighting"? A. Very good point indeed. They would've fit in perfectly with the game's theme, but Konami instead decided to use overused Dancemania songs. Go figure. Q. Have you even played Martial Beat? A. Err... that's a complicated question. If the question means "Have I ever physically played Martial Beat?" then the answer is no. But if the question is "Have I ever played the essence that is Martial Beat, the daily grind of keeping up that beat of life while punching and kicking at martial arts masters to generic pop/dance music?" then the answer is still no and that was the stupidest question I've ever heard. Anywho, playing the game obviously isn't necessary for a lyrics FAQ, unless I've erred and the game doesn't actually have the full-length songs. Q. Your lyrics seem (way) off. A. Thou shalt not criticize, thou who doth not know what a question is. I did most of these by ear with basis on the OST lyrics, but I acknowledge that a few of them might be off (the second verse of the That's the Way rap is probably atrocious). If you know for sure that a lyric is off, just send an e-mail and I'll check it. Q. Should I pick up the OST? A. If you already have the Dancemania Delux series and J-Paradise, there won't be too much new for you. The 2nd Disc Nonstop Megamix is the worst I've ever heard, but the true bonuses lie on Disc 1. There are bonus remixes of some of the songs, including an exclusive Zombie Remix of Sky High, the full-length 17 (Euro Mix), a short edit of the Ordinary World (Above and Beyond Remix), and Boom Boom Dollar (Red Monster Mix). The Beat of Life (a vocal version of MartialBeat) is fun just for its relatively japangrish vocals (though Scotty D. wrote the lyrics, which means the actual lyrics actually do make sense). Q.
