Why the script? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Koudelka is a gothic horror RPG set in the year 1898, and in one location: Nementon (sometimes spelled Nemeton) Monastery. It has an intelligent and mature script and many cut scenes and FMVs all of which are fully voiced. However there is no on screen text in English, and no pause button. This makes the task of transcribing rather awkward, and probably explains the lack of a complete script FAQ, until now. As the first of the Shadow Hearts games, Koudelka was the one that set the stamp on the series, with its mix of horror and religious themes, edgy humour and morally ambiguous characters, combined with perverted monster designs and ethereal music. It may have been made for the Playstation, and released in 2000, but the years have not diminished the beauty and originality of Koudelka. It remains as a testament to the brilliant imagination of its creator: the writer, director, producer and composer Hiroki Kikuta. His company Sacnoth produced the game, but it proved to be a commercial failure and he left the studio. Then his ideas were developed further in the following two games, Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts Covenant, and the battle system was completely changed with the introduction of the greatly admired Judgement Ring. A fourth game, From the New World, with a different setting and characters has also been released. Despite the critical acclaim that the Shadow Hearts games have received, both Sacnoth, the developer of Koudelka and Shadow Hearts, and now Nautilus, the company that developed Covenant and From the New World, have ceased to exist, and sales of these games have never been able to match their quality. Koudelka is where the story of Koudelka Iasant and the mystical yet dangerous Emigre Document (called the Emigre Manuscript in the later games) begins. The setting of Nementon Monastery in Wales, also makes another appearance. Koudelka is a significant game, not just because it is a stunning achievement, but also because without Koudelka there would be no Shadow Hearts games, and no Yuri Hyugi. Yuri and Koudelka are two of the most intriguing and believable characters ever created for a video game and the third member of this group, Roger Bacon, is, well, the most bizarre and yet endearing thirteenth century Franciscan philosopher you could ever hope to meet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Chapters I have divided the script into chapters. These are not based on the rooms of the building that Koudelka explores, nor the enemies she and her companions defeat, but on the cut scenes and FMVs that form a crucial part of the story. There are already walkthroughs for the game on GameFAQs, and this is not an attempt to provide another one. Since my intention is to highlight the quality of the story and character interactions I have used excerpts from the script as chapter headings. There are some that have no speech and are simply FMVs. 2. Images The links to images from the game have been added, so you can relate the script more directly to the scenes. Many thanks to Saikyo Mog, who painstakingly played the game and took all the pictures I wanted, though the captions are in his inimitable style. 3. Spelling I live in the UK and I use English spelling. As there is no text on screen I have transcribed the speech as I heard it, and used the form of spelling that I know best. Since the setting is in Wales I think this choice is justified. 4. The Script ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The only point I want to make here is that the voices are all American, despite the fact that the game is set in Wales, and most of the characters are British. Unusually, this does detract from the game at all, as the voice acting is excellent. Please let me know if there is anything we can do. We are the only ones who live here, and it's so rare we get any visitors. E: So are you two really the only ones that live here? O: Why do you ask? E: Well it's pretty foggy so I couldn't tell for sure, but this it seemed like an old church or something. Seems a little big for just the two of you. O: You're right. In the ninth century a saint from Ireland named Daniel Scotius built a place of worship here to appease monsters and evil spirits. That is how the Nementon monastery started, or so I've heard. K: Monsters. Is that right. O: Yes. What about them? E: You might not believe this but we saw a monster on our way here. O: Is that so? You saw it too? E: You mean...that monster has been around for a while? O: Well, we have been taking care of the monastery for a number of years, but from about six months ago...monsters hare been appearing. B: We saw more and more every night. O: And I used to be a sailor, and I'm not afraid of any monster. B: Oh dear, what if something terrible happens to you. E: We almost got killed back there. And now we're out of bullets. O: That's not good. The monsters might try and attack you again. I'll spare you some bullets. E: Thanks. That'll be great. B: Looking after others. He's so wonderful like that. K: So, have you two been together long? B: Yes. Quite a while. Now all he does is paint and maintain the building. Just his daily routine. But back in the old days... K: I can tell you how you will feel. In about half an hour you won't be able to move your body. If you don't find an antidote you will definitely die. E: So they were trying to kill us. But why? K: Don't know. But it seems they are quite used to doing it this way. They must be hiding something. ----Edward is crouched on the floor in pain. E: (groaning in pain) K: Listen Edward, I am going to try and cure you now, but you have to promise that when I do you won't get mad and rush back to that couple right away. Would you mind telling us how you ended up collapsed down this path? ----James gets to his feet and Koudelka gives him a hand to assist him. J: My name is James, James O'Flaherty. I've been searching for something and it took me to the monastery. Little did I know it had become a breeding ground for demonic spirits. E: Then how did you get in here dressed like that? J: Through the main gate of course. The caretakers welcomed me with open arms. E: That husband and wife team? And the food? Was there no poison in your food? J: What are you talking about? Are you out of your mind? K: These caretakers tried to poison and kill us. J: That's not funny. I find it unbelievable that you should try to dupe an upstanding member of the Christian faith. K: So nothing happened to you then? J: Of course not. Not until I encountered that monster. E. And we are the ones that took care of that monster. Far be it from me to expect any word of gratitude from you. J: I see. But I can tell from your appearances that the power of faith alone wasn't enough to smooth things out with that monster. K: It wasn't the kind of problem that faith alone could solve. J: Ugh. (disapproves) ----James stands up and turns to look at the font. J: Why, this plinth. It's broken now, but holy water ran from it until recently. Ah, but I have become distracted. ----Holds out hands in supplication. J: Almighty God, please give me the strength to ward off these monsters. E: I can see that we have wasted our time here. K: Mmhum (agreeing) E: Let's go Koudelka. J: Just a minute. Although I am under the protection of the Lord it doesn't hurt to take precautionary measures. J: The filthy and immoral little beggars who deserve to die. Heaven is.. ----The sound of gunfire rings out. ----They all duck down and crouch. E: That doesn't sound like a demonic spirit to me. K: The noise is coming from that building over there. E: The poison didn't kill us, so they are taking the fast and easy way now. ----James moves closer to the window. J: Don't be ridiculous. E: I don't give a rat's ass what you are! E: Look. I'm not saying that all those people were saints, OK? That doesn't mean they should be put to death. J: You saw that old couple. These treasures must have been taken from them, soaked in curses and hatred. You'll be cursed if you worship those things. J: I am a busy man who does not have the time to teach you the importance of faith. But I will tell you why we have found these treasures. It can only have come from the guidance of God. R:  Yes, you are quite right in your assessment of me.  Sun-dried kippers may
    be more pleasant to look at than my shrivelled up appearance.  There was a 
    time when I was hailed as the foremost warlock, but my profession seems to 
    go in and out of fashion with the passage of time.

K:  You are a strange man.  That's if you can be called a man.

R:  I have given up being a man many hundreds of years ago.  I am no longer a
    person, though I hesitate to answer questions concerning my existence,
    because I have yet to figure out exactly what I am.

K:  That's fine.  It's not that I need to know anyway.  But tell me.  Why were 
    you sleeping in such a strange place?

R:  I have never been able to awake in a good mood.  And I just planned to rest
    for a while.  What year is it anyway?  Are we still on the Gregorian
    calendar?

E:  Thank goodness you're OK.

K:  That's not completely the case.  I have some bad news for you.  I saw the
    caretakers, both the husband and wife.

E:  Really?  Where were they?

K:  They're dead.

    Apparently they were the ones responsible for killing all the thieves and
    desperadoes that were sneaking into the monastery.  And with good reason.

J:  No.  I don't believe it.

K:  (voice raised) You should know very well what has been going on.  Ogden was
    trying to avenge the death of Elaine.

J:  The death.  Of Elaine?  I don't believe it.  This is preposterous.

E:  Who is Elaine?

K:  I have no idea.  All I know is that Elaine's spirit called me to this
    place.

    Tell me, who is Elaine?  And Patrick?

    The caretakers told me that robbers broke into Elaine's home while Patrick
    was away and murdered her...Elaine was a benefactor for the caretakers, and
    they took it upon themselves to murder every single robber and desperado
    that entered the grounds.  It...was a form of revenge for them.

J:  (speaking for the first time quietly and without anger.)
    I am originally from Ireland you see.  Although small, my family had a
    successful business and were soon able to send me to school, which I loved
    from a very early age.

    I was soon accepted to a prestigious university in England.  With my
    parents' assistance I made my way across the ocean.  I met Patrick at
    university.  We were both studying chemistry and embarking upon similar
    paths.

    About that same time I, I began competing for the love of a beautiful
    woman. Elaine.  And we had a falling out.  I loved Elaine with all my

    years ago I was murdered by some thieves that broke into my home.  I was

    that anyone could do.

El: Yes.  With Ogden's assistance and the powers from ancient Druids he  held a
    resurrection ceremony in this monastery.

K:  But something went wrong, didn't it?

El: He only resurrected my physical body.  As you can see, my soul is still
    doomed to roaming the universe, forever separated from my body.  And the
    terrifying thing, is that my body is resurrected as a heartless monster.

K:  Monster. (whispers)

El: Although the monster may look like me, it is not me.  Mr O'Flaherty.
    Please.  Turn my body into ashes with your power.

J:  Ashes.  But if I do that I won't be able to bring you back to life! (in
    anguish)

El: Mr. O'Flaherty I was robbed of my life by those thieves and I could hate
    them as mortal enemies.  Choose to think that my death was pre-ordained by
    the Lord.  Please do not mourn my death.

----She reaches out to comfort James who is standing with his head bowed in
    despair.

El: It was wrong for Patrick to try to resurrect me, to undo the work of God.
    Please do not be sad.  Death is at the heart of God's reason.  I urge you
    to destroy my body.  Its existence defies the wise providence of Heaven.
    It mustn't exist in this world.

----She disappears.

J:  Wait.  Elaine.  God. (weeping) Cursed.  What a cruel world.  I gave
    everything for her happiness and now what am I left with?  I have no
    meaning in my life.  God.  What have I been doing with my life?  Elaine!
    Elaine! (shouting and weeping)

----James collapses, kneeling and his head to the floor in grief.

E:  I have been around for twenty years and I have yet to run across an old man
    as abnormal as yourself.

R:  I see.  Well I have been around for more than six hundred years and I have
    seen plenty of ABNORMAL people just like myself.

J:  My dear old man.  Might you be related to the great warlock Roger Bacon who
    made such a name for himself in the thirteenth century?

R:  You are very knowledgeable.  I am that warlock Roger Bacon you speak of.

E:  You mean to tell me that you were born in twelve-ten and have been alive
    and well until the present day of eighteen-ninety-eight?

R:  Actually to be precise I was born in twelve fourteen.

J:  Koudelka.  What type of a joke is this?

K:  That's my question.

R:  This is no joke.  I am the reputable Roger Bacon.

J:  Very well then.  If you are truly that Roger Bacon then you will be able to
    tell me with whom and where you studied.

R:  That's easy.  I entered Oxford in twelve-forty-seven and studied under the
    tutelage of Robert Grosseteste, although as my professor I would not
    consider him  to be a wise man.

    I penned my masterpiece Opus Majus as well as numerous other books on
    natural science.  Being a visionary pioneer. (shouting)

    Hm.  I must say that my work has influenced generations of work that
    followed.  But alas, in hindsight, that work pales in comparison to the
    work I did copying the Emigre Document for the Pope.

J:  The Emigre Document.  I figured you would know about that book.

R:  Of course.  It took me five years to copy the book in its entirety.  I know
    everything there is to know about the book.

K:  What is it about?

R:  It unravels the secrets of life that extend far beyond the largest sphere
    (?).  It speaks of the secret rituals conducted by the ancient race of
    Formors on immortality.  The Formors would claim the lives of the
    resurrected as their own.  They reversed the laws of nature and the cycle
    of life.

    When the Druids took over the Celts, Alexander the Great penned the Emigre
    documents in Greek, for placement in the Great Library.

K:  Resurrecting the dead.  It is true.

R:  It has long been considered the most dangerous work of literature.  It was
    safely guarded in the caverns of the Supreme Pontiff's quarters.  But
    apparently, the book was not able to withstand the wears of time over
    generations, and the Pope decreed that a new edition be created by copying
    the full text.

    That is where I came in.  The Pontiff requested that I copy the book word
    for word.  And when the work was finished, apparently I was supposed to be
    killed.  But I am not one to be dealt with so carelessly.  I secretly
    escaped, and eventually I made my way to the secret land referred to in
    the text of the Emigre Document.

E:  And the secret rituals?  Don't tell me.

R:  You need look no further than myself.

K:  And you succeeded.

R:  Hm...though I cannot perform the same on others.  Yes.  I have been able to
    escape the hands of death.  But I have not been able to escape the roots of
    existence which are the seeds of change.  My body is not immune to change.
    As you can see by my hideous appearance.  Hm.  I have had nothing to do
    other than roam the earth for the last three hundred years.  I've seen all
    I can take of mankind's cruelty.

    So.  I returned here.  For some rest.  Well...hm...enough of this gossip.
    I've got some research to do.  May I ask to be left alone?

R:  Well.  Let me see.  Yes, yes, I see.  Well that's right.  Resurrecting the
    dead.  Hm.  A cauldron.  The Branwen tales indeed.  Yes.  It is most likely
    that the events detailed here did take place.

J:  Just as I thought.

E:  But that's so frightening that...

R:  Personally I have not attempted it.  I am certain that the Emigre Document
    contained accounts of secret rituals conducted to resurrect the dead.  But
    as you can tell from reading this, it involves complicated predatory work.

    I have given up discerning the impossibility of using the psychic powers
    necessary to create such an immense psychic platform.  Moreover, I would
    never have expected that people would attempt to challenge such a feat.

K:  The journals say that the physical body was resurrected but not the soul.

R:  Absolutely.  The Ancients held the secret to life in the palm of their
    hands.  Hm.  But they could never come close to touching the secrets of the
    soul.  They resurrected the dead in order to use their physical bodies as a
    workforce.  Thus building the great civilisation we ofttimes speak of.  In
    fact, we would not be far off if we called them...puppeteers.  Heehee.
    Exploiting the human body as an object.

E:  If so then...

R:  Yes, resurrecting the dead and restoring them to life as it was before
    death is impossible.

J:  Then how do you return the resurrected body once again to earth?

R:  That (long pause) is a very complicated question.  Since it already defies
    universal logic.

J:  Please.

R:  It is no easy task.

J:  Tell me how.  It is what Elaine, God rest her soul, wanted.

R:  Right.  Hm.  It is not...absolutely impossible.  But, I would need to call
    forth the sacred powers in order to complete such a feat.  Hm. (thinking)
    Yes.  I know the arm of Daniel Scotius, the man who built this monastery,
    is stored in a stone statue on the ground.  If, if we, throw that into a
    cauldron we will successfully destroy the roots of the tree of life.  Hm.
    After that I haven't a clue whether to call forth the energies of fire,
    or entrust the task to water.  It is so complicated.

J:  Fire or water.

K:  What are we going to do?

R:  Oh Heavenly Father bless our souls and bring forth an end to this
    suffering.

    Oh...Hm...er, oh...

    What are we gonna do?

K:  How ironic to have made it this far and not have access to the temple.

J:  Koudelka, Edward.  You both must go now.  It is my friend that is
    apparently responsible for this disturbance, and therefore I am partially
    responsible for this trouble.  I have no intention for asking for your
    sympathy, and I am no position to plead for your help.  So from this point
    forward I can manage on my own.

----Koudelka moves to face James.

K:  Don't kid yourself.  We didn't come along just for your sake.

E:  No.  Koudelka you should go back now.  It'll be far too dangerous.

K:  Edward, you're the one who should go home.  You were not meant for this
    world.  Granted you are a good fighter having had plenty of experience, and
    I won't deny the fact that you have the killer instinct either, but when
    all is said and done, you are an average Joe.  I am not.  I was meant to
    exist in this realm.  It's the only place I can carve out an existence for
    myself.

E:  Quit lecturing me!  I want no part of a lukewarm existence filled with
    regret.  No.  My way is to not worry about consequences and to do whatever
    it is that I want to do.  Chance means nothing to me.  Life's a gamble and
    once you place your bet you better play to win or else you end up dead.

K:  Edward.  You really are ridiculous. (laughing).

E:  That's what they tell me.

J:  You do as you like.

----James walks to look more closely at the door.

E:  That I will.

K:  Suddenly when you feel like it you decide when you can and cannot open
    doors?

J:  Wait!  There's a way.  Remember when we were searching Patrick's mansion?
    There was various chemicals around.  It may take some time, but I think I
    can combine the chemicals to make nitro-glycerine.

K:  Nitro-glycerine!

E:  That's great!  You're talking powerful explosives here.

J:  For this door I think we'll need a full flask.  Indeed if I drop the flask
    before I return I'll be knocking on Heaven's door in a flash.

----The ominous sound of the deep chime of a bell is heard.

J:  I go and it is done.  The bell invites me.  "Fear not Duncan for it is the
    knell that summons thee to Heaven or to Hell." (quoting Shakespeare's
    Macbeth)

J:  I'm going to begin my work.  Could you two wait for me here?

----Koudelka and Edward are sitting on the floor either side of the blazing
    fire in Patrick's study each with a bottle, and they have obviously been
    drinking and chatting for a while.

K:  (laughing)... and then, what happened to the girl Melody?

E:  She was gone the next morning.  She left with practically everything in the
    room.

K:  (laughing)  You don't have much luck....do you?

E:  You know what they say: the cleanest break up is when a woman runs out on
    you.

----Both laughing.

K:  But you're lucky, I mean to have so many people to kid around with.  But
    for me, I'm all alone.  Been all alone all my life.

E:  But what about your childhood?

K:  Yes I did have a childhood.  I was born in a small town in Wales right off
    the banks of the Taliesin river.  That was a small gypsy town.

E:  Gypsy?

K:  That's right, gypsy.  Though we didn't call ourselves gypsy.  We called
    ourselves "wrong".  See, a true gypsy is born under the blue sky.  And is
    destined to die under the same blue sky.  It's gypsy law.

E:  So then I guess you plan on dying underneath the blue skies?

K:  Hm.  Every gypsy is given a name at birth.  My given name was Zlato.

E:  Zlato.

K:  Mmhm

E:  It's got a strange resonance to that name.  What does it mean?

K:  I can't tell you. (laughing)

E:  That too must be part of the law?

K:  (laughing even more) The law it is.  ...Ha hm.

E:  You know ever since I met you, you have an enigmatic mysterious glint in
    your eyes.  It must be the gypsy in you.  "The glance from thy soul
    searching eye can raise with hope, depress with fear."

K:  Byron again?

E:  Yeah.

K:  You must really like him, don't you?

E:  Yes.  Somehow I feel as though we're birds of a feather.

K:  Then he must be self obsessed as well. (laughs)

E:  I'd rather be classified as a romantic. (sighs)

    My father was a strict man.  He couldn't forgive his son for failing
    academically.  He blamed my failure on the time I wasted inventing
    adventures, dreaming of utopian landscape.  I was brought up to believe
    that dreams, the power of the imagination, as well as all the things I
    loved as a child, were useless.  A complete waste of time.  It was as if he
    was telling me I was useless.  Then again.  Maybe just that.

    I think I probably was born too late.  By the time I was fifteen everything
    there was to be done, had already been done.  The western territories
    were colonised, the jungles had been explored.  There was no wilderness for
    me to wander in to.  No jungle for me to cut my way through.  I guess
    that's how I ended up roaming the country.

    Oh granted.  I picked a few fights along the way.  Played with fire.
    Gambled on my life a few times.  But none of that comes close to the truth
    I'm searching for.  I yearn for something far greater.  I can't quite
    explain myself.  It is as though I am on a quest for some intangible
    treasure of sorts.

----Sad music begins to play.

    Koudelka, I envy you.  Psychic powers that few are blessed with.  And being
    born a gypsy, you can choose to live how you wish.

K:  And who gave you the right to act as if you figured me out?  Do you have
    any idea how I was raised?  Ha.  You make me laugh.  Adventures.  Please.
    You haven't the slightest clue.  Do you have any idea how much pain my
    psychic powers have brought me?

    My father died when I was only a child.  I predicted the exact time, place
    and ending of my father's life.  Imagine that.  Predicting your own
    father's death.  Hm.  No, I was cursed as a child.  Being given powers not
    meant for a child.  And my mother?  Huh.  She, she was so frightened and
    full with hatred for me, she tried to kill me with her very hands.

    The gypsy elders got together and decided to excommunicate me.  I was only
    nine then. (said softly)  Do you have any idea how a nine year old child
    survives, without the help of a living soul? (getting angry)

    Treasures!  You must be joking!  Have you ever cried and begged for your
    next meal?  Did you ever sell your body seeking shelter from the frigid
    night air?  Huh.  I used to be just like Charlotte.  When she cried and
    said: No-one has ever loved me.  Argh.  Those words cut straight through
    me.  It was me she was talking about!

    Just like her, I wished that everybody would die, and harboured a hatred
    for all mankind.  But you see, Charlotte has made her peace.  Hm, hm, hm.
    {dismissive laughter)  Gone to heaven.

----Koudelka waves her free arm in the air in a gesture of dismissal.

K:  Me?  I'm still alive, (in mocking despair) and still all alone.  No-one
    ever lends a helping hand.  No-one!

----Koudelka gets to her feet and begins to stagger while confronting Edward,
    who stays on the floor.

E:  Koudelka, you?

K:  I am not as free as you make me out to be. (getting more drunk and angry)
    I am a poor dirty ignorant woman who threw her gypsy pride to the dogs, in
    order to live.  But you see, even someone like me can do good...with my
    powers...I can ease the pain of others.  That's when I feel good about
    living.  I don't need to be loved.  I just want my life to have some
    meaning, and just want someone to tell me they need me. (almost in tears)

----Koudelka staggers and folds her legs to sit down again.

    You, huhuh, no way you...would ever...understand.  Humph, humph, (a
    snorting laugh that is more like a sob)

----Koudelka ends up half curled up, the bottle at her side and her back to
    Edward, quietly sobbing.

----There is the sound of the door opening and James' voice is heard.

J:  It's done.  It's completed.

R:  In these crazy times young people push themselves too much.

----Edward emerges from the tent.

----Inside the tent Koudelka stretches and smiles.

K:  Ah, the sun came out.  I prefer it a little hazier though.

----Edward smiles and gets on his horse.

K:  Good bye.  We'll probably never even see each other again.

E:  Hey, your nickname Zlato.  What does it mean?  I haven't even asked you
    yet.  Will you tell me?

K:  It...it means...treasure. (said almost demurely)

E:  Oh, that's rich.  I'll remember that.  Treasure.

----He rides away slowly.

R:  Is it OK child?  For you not to follow him?

K:  Yeah, it's OK.  I have a feeling that someday somewhere we'll meet again.
