Little kid, big mountain [1] {Introduction} I've been a fan of Inu-Yasha for quite some time, well before it appeared on American TV. Almost as soon as I began watching it, I longed for an RPG based on its story line to hit the shelves. Being from North America, I was unable to find or purchase Bandai's IY RPG, until I found a copy sitting on a table at a local garage sale. I fired up my PSX, and dove head first into this great game, until I found that it is very hard to navigate through if you are unfamiliar with the Japanese language. I went to GameFaqs, only to find that there was little information on this title, despite IY's growing popularity in the United States. This Walkthrough is intended to help those of you out there who, like me, are die-hard Inu-Yasha fans, yet are unable to play through this game due to a lack of Japanese knowledge. My ultimate goals will be to: a) Assist you, the gamer, in beating this game, without pulling out too much hair, of course ;) b) Make this walkthrough useful for RPG newbies and veterans alike c) Introduce those new to Inu Yasha to this great series [2] {Updates} Jan 7, 2003 - 0.11 information ontransformation, courtesy of AzNsHaDoW553 Jan 5, 2003 - 0.1: Various corrections, thanks to AzNsHaDoW553 :) Jan 3, 2003 - 0.1: First version ^_^ [3] {New to Inu Yasha?} [a] {Plot Information} Inu Yasha is an anime based on a 15-year-old Japanese girl named Kagome. One day, when searching for her pet cat, she falls into a well, which takes her back in time to Japan's Sengoku era. There, she finds a longhaired boy pinned to a tree by an arrow. After being taken prisoner to a village, she meets Kaede, an old lady, who is the sister of a deceased priestess named Kikyo. While eating, a giant Youkai (demon) attacks the village, and chases Kagome back to the tree with the young boy. Suddenly, the young boy awakens from his slumber and in attempt to save both him and Kagome, the boy (Inu Yasha), asks her to pull the arrow out of him. Upon doing so, Inu Yasha easily defeats the demon. During this battle, however, a magical jewel called the Shikon no Tama is released from Kagome's body. It was thought to have burned with the ashes of Kikyo, the priestess who was entrusted to guard it from evil. During an attempt to steal this jewel from Kagome, Inu Yasha becomes the receiver of a cursed necklace courtesy of Kaede. This necklace forces Inu Yasha to fall on the ground every time Kagome instructs him to "sit". Inu Yasha is eventually convinced by Kaede to assist Kagome in protecting the Shikon no Tama, because Kagome is believed to have been the re-incarnation of Kikyo, and possesses some of her magical powers, such as to sense the Shikon no Tama. Inu Yasha, however, has other plans... [b] {Characters} [Inu Yasha] The main character of the game, he is a powerful Hanyou (half Youkai, half human), who is the son of a powerful Youkai. He has great strength and speed, as well as great skill in hand to hand combat, though his Youkai background gives him hunger for power. He has a short fuse, and often argues with Kagome. [Kagome] A 15 year old girl from the future, she is believe to be a re-incarnation of Kikyo. She is a beginner with the bow and arrow. She is able to sense Shikon shards, and thanks to Kaede, is knowledgeable regarding herbs. [Kikyo] A priestess who was in love with Inu Yasha, she was supposed to have protected the Shikon no Tama. During a dispute, she seals Inu Yasha to the tree with a magical arrow, and then dies. One can only guess as to whether or not she returns... [Kaede] The old woman with the eye patch who is present at the beginning of the game. She is not a main character, yet she is present through much of its plot [Shippo] A young fox who has become an orphan. He is capable of some decent magical tricks, such as transformation and illusion. He would much rather spend his time annoying Inu Yasha than fighting however. [Miroku] A young Buddhist monk who is cursed with an air void in his right hand. He loves hitting on women, and constantly requests for one to bear his child. [Sango] A young, female Youkai hunter. She lost her family before her very eyes, and sided with evil for a short period of time. In her weakest moment, Inu Yasha and friends helped her out and accepted her into their party. [4] {Game Basics} [a] {Controls} D-Pad: Controls movement of character, and navigates menus Cross: Hold to Run Triangle: Switch between characters Square: Action Circle: Action Start: Menu L1/L2/R1/R2: Sensing power (Can sense notable objects or Shikon shards) [b] {Menus} !Note: These are only educated guesses based on playing experience... If anyone would wish to contribute help regarding menus, drop me a line -Startup- New Game Continue Sound Options -Start Menu- Menu Sleep (Only at night) Exit -Main Menu You begin on the character info screen. To switch between characters, press left and right on the d-pad. To switch between screens, press up and down. Screen 1: Character Information This screen depicts your EXP (Top of the screen) Needed EXP for next level (Underneath EXP) Also, there are two bars in the middle. The top one is health (HP), and the lower one is magic (MP). Health, of course, is a reflection on how much damage you can take, and magic allows you to cast special skills and spells. Beneath these bars are stats. If I can find someone to translate this, I'll post more info. Assume for now that they are somewhere on the lines of strength, dexterity, magic, defense, luck, etc. They are a reflection of your performance in battle. Screen 2: Items If you press down on the d-pad, you will reach the item screen. This shows you which items you currently have in your inventory. Items can be bought, used, and sold. There are 3 types of items: Regenerative, Attack, and Equipment. Regenerative are items that restore health, magic, and some even bring you back from death. Attack are items used to attack an enemy, and can only be used in battle. Equipment are items that you can wear, that modify the damage you can deal with an attack, or how much damage can be dealt to you. Many items can be found along the way, either in little sprites, or hidden within objects or animals. Screen 3: Equipment This is where you actually put on the equipment that you wear. Again, any help translating would be greatly appreciated. As far as I know, there is one for armor, and one for weapon. I believe there is one for a helmet, though I am not entirely sure. Screen 4: Lineup You can switch the order in which the characters are lined up in during battle. Remember that the first character is the one taking the damage on single attacks by the enemy, so be sure to put someone there of a higher level. -Yes and No- Periodically, yes and no choices appear throughout the game. Yes is the two character answer on top, and no is the 3-character answer below. [c] Battles Battles in Inu Yasha are very nice compared to many RPG's. You first select how you are to fight, and then you see animations of the characters fighting, which look as if they were taken right out of the show ^_^ Battles occur either when you are at a boss character (main enemy), or when you're walking, you will randomly fight some weaker enemies. -Battle Menu- During the planning phase of a battle, a menu will appear on your right. You need to select how each character behaves in battle. It consists of: Attack Defend Item Run (not available in boss fights) If you choose attack, another menu comes up which asks you to choose your attack. Your normal attack will not drain MP, while special moves will. If it drains MP, a number will appear in the description of the attack below, and will tell you how much MP you need to use to perform the maneuver. If an attack is gray, it means you don't have enough MP to perform it. After selecting an attack, if there are multiple enemies, you will need to choose which one to attack, via another menu. The enemy you wish to attack will be in color, the other one grayed out in the pictorial view. The second option, Defend, commands your character to take a defensive stance, hence reducing the damage dealt to you by the enemy. Unfortunately, if you defend, you cannot do anything else that round. Item lets you choose an item in your inventory to be used in battle. You can use regenerative items, or battle items. After selecting item, choose which item you wish to use in the next menu, and then if necessary, choose whom the item is to be used on (if it is regenerative, which character, and if it is a battle item, which enemy). Run lets you run from battle. If you do this, you don’t get any EXP or money. In addition, if you fail to run, you are defenseless to the enemy attacks which will follow. Upon defeating the enemies, you will see two numbers beneath the pictorial view. The first represents the experience gained, the second is the amount of money the enemies dropped. **Remember: you will only enter random battles outside of town** [d] Transformation As you are playing through the game, you will notice in the top left-hand corner, there is an information bubble containing a picture of the moon, as well as the date. On the 30th of each month, when there is a new moon, Inu Yasha will transform into a full human for the night. He will lose his claw attacks, yet will retain most of his strength in battle. He will turn back to normal in the morning. [5] {Walkthrough} 1. Intro Upon starting a new game, you'll see an MDEC movie introducing the situation. The speech is entirely in Japanese (no subtitles), but it doesn't matter- the story line info in here is way more in depth anyway. After the movie ends, you will enter a battle with the snake-like Youkai called Mononoke. Inu Yasha can easily defeat this monster with no problem. Once the battle ends, Kaede will ask you to find the Shikon no Tama which was inside the Mononoke. It is inside one of the pieces of the body. To find out which one, simply press L1 or R1, and you'll come across the right piece. A short scene will then show Inu Yasha trying to take the jewel, and Kaede placing the controlling necklace on Inu Yasha, as well as Kagome demonstrating its use. The screen then fades to black. The next scene consists of Kaede talking to Inu Yasha and Kagome about the Shikon no Tama. There is no interactivity in this dialogue. The next scene shows Inu Yasha outside sitting on a Tree. Kaede will tell him how Kagome is gone, and that he needs to rescue her. You need to exit the village to the via the right exit. 2. Kagome Kidnapped Upon exiting the village, you will be taken to a forest. You need to search for Kagome in the forest. You can use your senses (L1/R1) to find the exit, though along the way there are various items (herbs and cylinder-like things). The herbs restore your health by 30, while the bamboo cylinders restore your magic by 15. After exiting the denser portion of the forest, you will come to an area with a bride and a strange pink rock. You can heal up at this rock, by pressing the action button while standing next to it. Since you cannot cross the broken bridge, another way of getting around has to be found. You need to travel down, until you reach a log. Cross over the log, and continue up, until you reach the house. This is a thieves' hideout, and contains Kagome and the Shikon no Tama. I recommend you are at least level 2 before you enter, because there is a boss inside. This boss is the thieves' leader, who possesses the Shikon no Tama, and is extra powerful because of it. You should use Inu Yasha's Claw attack to defeat the boss. After beating him, a bird swoops down and grabs the Shikon jewel from the man's body. It then flies off. Inu Yasha picks up a bow for Kagome, and she joins the team. You should then exit the house, and move towards the bridge, where the bird is waiting. After some dialogue, Kagome shoots the bird with an arrow, and shatters the Shikon no Tama into many pieces. They go flying, and your journey begins. 3. Yura of Hair The first Shikon shard which you must find rests in the possession of the demon known as Yura of Hair. Instead of the right exit from town, this time you will be forced to travel left. Again, explore the area, picking up any items you may find. You will want to travel south, until you reach a point where you are on the right side of a river. As you continue south, Kagome and Inu Yasha will seem to get into some kind of an argument. Inu Yasha will walk off, but return to find Kagome hanging weightlessly in air. After closer inspection, you can see that she was being held by hair. This is where Kagome's sensing powers come into play- the level is filled with hair, yet only if you are playing as Kagome can you see it. You cannot, however, walk over the hair as Kagome, otherwise you will take damage. Needless to say, Inu Yasha can walk over these barriers without getting hurt. You will want to follow the hair back north, until you reach a point with one tree on one side of the river, and one on the other. Inu Yasha will get out and explain something, and you will cross over the river by jumping on the tree and jumping across. In the future, you can simply switch to Inu Yasha and press action and you'll cross over. On the other side of this river, you'll find an exit leading west. This new area consists of rocky cliffs. Follow the path between them until there is a ramp that you can use to climb to the top. Then, follow the path on top back the way you came, until you come to two cliffs facing each other. Use Inu Yasha's jumping trick again to cross over to the other side, and then travel west again on the other side. Eventually, you will come to the end of the area, and Yura of Hair will be waiting. You should easily defeat her your first try, though level 4 should be a minimum skill level to be at if you wish to conserve healing items. When you win, enter her hair fortress. Here, you'll want to find her special skull which contains her spirit. Use Kagome's find skill to seek it out. Periodically, Yura of Hair will attempt to fight you. She will be the same as before, and will still give out EXP, so if you are short, or you want to gain an easy level, beat her for 10 EXP a shot. After you find her skull, Kagome will leave your party to pick away at it with one of her arrows, leaving Inu Yasha to fight Yura of Hair for a final time. She will be slightly harder than before, but no real challenge. After defeating her, Kagome will break the skull and you'll be transported back to the village. You should then go talk to Kaede- she will be waiting in her house. Saving would also be a good idea- the save point is the blue rock in the cave next to Kaede's house. After talking to Kaede, a new path will be opened up to the west of town. Exit west, and then travel north. 4. Weasel Youkai Travel north until you reach a new village. This village has a store- it is marked with a blue entrance. (Inns are marked with a gray entrance with a kanji on it). You should head to the house in the far northwest of the town, and go in for a short dialogue. You should then wait until dark, and head to the house in the south-westernmost part of town. Another dialogue will take place. Finally, head back to the north-westernmost corner for a third and final dialogue. There will be a cow lying on the ground. After the dialogue, you can walk up to the cow and pick up a flask of some sort. Switch to Inu Yasha, and head south out of town. Take the southern exit after the path with the statues, and then continue south. Use Inu Yasha's find skill as you continue south until you find a green spot. Walk up to the green spot, and then enter the forest to the right of it. Travel north, until you reach a cave. I recommend level 6 before you enter the cave, and you should have purchased some new equipment from town (they are the top few items in the shop). Enter the cave, and be wary of the mouse-like Youkai- they have a powerful magic attack that often does about 20 damage to even Inu Yasha! If you enter a battle with one, be sure to kill it first. Continue to use Inu Yasha's find skill until you reach a weasel creature. This is the boss, and is quite hard. You should fill up your life and magic before entering the battle. Here, I recommend having Kagome as a healer, by giving her all of the regenerative items. Order Inu-Yasha to use his 5 magic claw technique, and keep Kagome in defensive mode unless Inu Yasha needs healing. In that case, use an item. In a few rounds, you should be able to fell this Youkai. After you beat this boss, don't forget to pick up the shikon shard hidden in the western-most part of the first screen of the cave (use Kagome's find skill). Then, return to town, and talk to the people in the north-westernmost house- one of them will give you 100 money pieces (gold..??). A man should approach you with a dialogue, at which point grants you access to the western exit. Before you leave, however, enter the fields via the town's eastern exit and use Kagome's find skill to seek out the hidden shikon shard. 5. Kagome Kidnapped...again?! Upon leaving the second town, you will enter yet another forest. Be sure to pick up the treasure hidden slightly south. There are many routes you can take in this next area. After you enter the second screen, go south on the first path. This will take you to an area where a young dog is in some sort of danger. After some dialogue, Inu Yasha helps the wolf and it goes scamering off somewhere. Traver further south, and Kagome will stop, and fall on the ground. It appears she needs some water. As Inu Yasha, travel even further south until you reach a stream. He'll get some water, and on your way up, he'll realize that Kagome is missing. Cross the bridge to the western side, and maneuver your way to the western exit in the bottom lefthand corner of this area. You will find yourself in some sort of desert. As soon as you walk in, Inu Yasha will complain about something. Continue onward, until he complains again. From here, a larger dog will approach you, and talk for a second. Follow the wolf as you make your way through the desert, until you reach a forest again. Follow the dog through the forest until you reach a house. Enter, and you'll see Kagome tied up, with two bandits standing nearby. Inu Yasha will beat them up, and Kagome will of course be freed. When she returns to your party, travel northwards, until you exit this screen. When you enter the next area, go right and then exit through the second southern exit and pick up the item. It is an apple and will boost your maximum HP by 5. Travel back north and enter the cave. You should be at about level 8 or 9. Use Kagome's searching skill to find your way through the cave, until you reach a man. He'll turn into a Youkai and a boss fight will be initiated. This boss is pretty easy as long as you have a decent amount of health. Basically, just hit him with your strongest attacks, until the fight ends. Inu Yasha will jump away from the boss, but Kagome will be left standing right in front of it. Just before she is attacked, the large dog jumps in and saves her. A second fight with this Youkai begins. Use the same strategy, and in 2 or 3 turns he should be defeated. A shikon shard pops out of him when he's dead, and you of course take it. leave the cave, and return to the main path before the endangered dog. On your way, use Kagome's search technique to hunt down a shikon shard hidden in the desert. 6. The Toad Lord As you continue west, take the next southern path to where a boy is sitting next to a statue. After some brief conversation, you find out that his name is Nobunaga, and he is in search of a Princess, who is living with a lord who has been possessed by a Youkai. After your conversation, he walks off. Make your way north, and then west, where you will enter a town. You will see a brief cutscene in which some girls are being carried off in chains. Head to the house in the north-easternmost part of town, and speak with the Nobunage again. He runs off through a passage beside the house. Follow him, and along the way use Kagome's find skill to seek out another Shikon shard. It should be just above the cave. As you enter the new area, head North. Continue north until you reach a large house, and cross the bridge, where some guards will prevent you from continuing onward. Wait until night, and then head back to the house. The guards will be asleep. Walk up to the guard on the right, and press action. You will recieve a key. Use it to open the door to his right. Enter, and then head northeast. You will meet Nobunaga once more, and after some brief dialogue, he will join your party, though he cannot fight. Press action while standing by the guard right in front of you to recieve another key. Use it to enter the house. Explore the house, picking up any items you may find, until you reach a room with a girl lying on the floor, surrounded by blackish bubbles. After some more dialogue, a man will come in, and Inu Yasha will knock off the man's mask, revealing a toad's face. Inu Yasha and Kagome will then fight it. It should be an easy fight- the toad can rarely hit Inu Yasha. Use your strongest attacks, as it has much HP, yet it has very low defense. I recommend being at around level 11-12 for this fight. After you defeat him, a cutscene will show the toad absorbing power from the black bubbles, which are actually his eggs, filled with the spirits of girls. Inu Yasha will then try to fight him solo- he will be the same as he was before. After a few turns, the toad will give up and run off. Proceed outdoors. Use Kagome's search skill to seek out a Shikon shard, which should be near a tree where a guard was sleeping (you stole a key off of him). Then, search through the mansion until you find a room with wood and stoves. On one of the stoves, there is a bowl of hot water. Pick it up, and then head to the house south of where you fought the toad the first time. At the end of the hall, enter the room. Some dialogue will take place, and Kagome will spill the water all over the toad. The spirit which possessed him will then be exorcised, and you will have to fight it. It is similar to the toad, so use that strategy. It does have a higher hit percentage however. Once you have beaten it, grab the Shikon shard and exit the house. After a conversation with Nobunaga, you will be free to head back to the village. 7. Little kid, big mountain. Exit the village via the east exit. Head east until you reach a young girl sitting by a statue. Some dialogue will take place, and the girl will join up with you. Take her east to her home village, and into the first house you see. Her mother will be inside, and a conversation between the four of you takes place. You then exit the house with the girl, and he shows you a picture of a tall mountain. You are then free to roam about. First, use Kagome's search skill to find a Shikon shard in the east side of the village. Also, in the trees on the western border of the village, there is a fruit which raises your MP by 5. Once you have these two items, exit the village, and then take the northern route to the mountain. Climb the mountain, and at the top use Kagome's search skill to find a Shikon shard. Also, look for a flower that has bloomed, and press action while standing next to it. It will need to be night for you to find this flower. When you posess the flower, take it back to the little girl's house in town. Enter the house, and there will be some dialoge. After all is said and done, she will give something to Kagome which can be equipped. You should then exit the town and continue on your way.
