The Soundtrack ---------------------------------- オリジナルサウンドトラック =============================================================================== Final Fantasy VII's soundtrack was released shortly after the game itself, in early February 1997. It is comprised of 4 discs totalling 85 tracks. Soon after the release of the soundtrack, someone did an English translation of these Japanese track titles. It's not generally known who is responsible for this translation, but it is generally accepted as being an excellent piece of work. However, it is not without mistakes. For this reason, as well as the fact that it occasionally uses creative titling to get around an awkward literal translation, below I have listed three versions for each title. The first listed is the original Japanese title in kanji and kana. The second is the English title recommended by the author of this guide. The third is a literal translation of the Japanese title, and is presented in brackets. Three things to note. First, the recommended English title is often the same as the aforementioned English translation most commonly found on the Internet, though not always. Where my translation differs I have noted it in the translation notes at the end of this section. Second, if the title translates as is, that is if the recommended and literal translations are the same, the literal translation will be omitted. Third, the spellings used in the English localisation are used throughout. This is because those are the official and most widely known names in the English-speaking world, and this translation is primarily for the use of English-speakers who don't speak Japanese. The Japanese spellings are noted in the translation notes where relevant. If you must pretend that you are Japanese, feel free to use them instead. Japanese doesn't have articles (a, the), and in English song titles they are basically optional, so take your pick. With or without, either is okay. 3. As in the localisation, Mako is left intact, untranslated. Literally, "ma" means magic, demon or evil, and "ko" means light. Mako is a made-up word, it's not a normal Japanese word. 4. The Internet translation has Anxious Heart. Either is a perfectly acceptable literal translation, but usually in English we'd say restless rather than anxious. 6. I recommend the English spellings for the characters because these translations are going to be used only by those who have played the English version and can't speak Japanese. Thus Barret, not Barett. 7. "Hurry Up!" is an equally valid literal translation. 9. Again English spelling Shinra rather than Shin-Ra. Also see 1. 10. Fighting is not a literal translation, but it avoids the slight strangeness of Those Who Fight without compromising the meaning too much. I considered Fighters but dismissed it due to the extra meanings the English word carries with it. 13. See 1. 14. Underneath or Under are equally correct translations. 15. See 1. Persecuted is also fine. 16. See 1. 17. If you really want to preserve the "..." you could use "Who are... you?" or even "You are... who??" But as written English neither is really very good. 20. Those Who Fight Further is the title used on the Black Mages arranged CD, and is thus the official title. However, it's not good English so Still More Fighting is the recommended title. 23. This one is hell to translate. It's probably an abbreviation of 想いを胸に 抱く, and you need that verb in order to put the phrase into English. Otherwise it's just a somewhat incomplete phrase such as "Feelings in My Heart". In any case, the image is of someone hiding their feelings away and not saying them out loud. Disc 2 1. The Internet translation has Ahead on Our Way. This is the name of the Final Fantasy V Main Theme, but the Japanese title is not the same as the one here. It's not generally known where Ahead on Our Way came from, but the meaning is a little different from the actual meaning so Along Our Way is the recommended title. 7. The Japanese word, "Eleki", means electric guitar. However as this would give an overly long song name, which no other Chocobo theme has, "Electric de Chocobo" sounds better. Especially since the meaning is still pretty clear to anyone who thinks about it. 8. Synco is a Japanese abbreviation of the word syncopation. This song is done to a syncopated rhythm (stress is on the off-beats). Again, calling it Syncopation de Chocobo just sounds too long. 10. The Japanese does indeed say eagle, not condor. However, the Japanese name for the fort was Fort Condor, so this track is not supposed to be the name of the place, rather it's a descriptive title. Nevertheless it seems more consistent to say condor. As with 18 below, it would be entirely reasonable to use the actual place-name here. 12. I haven't checked yet but I believe this may be a line spoken by Red XIII. The phrasing fits his way of talking. I'm also not 100% sure on the nuances of my translation here. 16. Costa del Sol meaning Beach of the Sun in Spanish (??), and of course being the name of the town. 17. The traitor in question is presumably Barret, this being the more downbeat version of his theme. 18. It's not at all unreasonable to use the place-name instead of this descriptive name, in which case this becomes North Corel. 21. I don't like my translation here, I'll almost certainly revise it at some point. But the Internet translation Sandy Badlands doesn't convey the meaning of exile or banishment. Perhaps something like Banished to the Sandy Wastes would be better, if a little inaccurate. Translation Notes 1. Another descriptive name. The place is Cosmo Canyon. 2. This is pretty much translated as-is. I noted the literal translation only because Lifestream is not a normal English word. 4. Shinobi is most likely an abbreviation of Shinobi no Mono. Another reading for the same kanji (with the same meaning) is Ninja. 5. Japanese doesn't specify singular and plural, so this could be either "The One" or "Those". I have chosen to diverge from the Internet translation (which has "Those" because this phrase comes from a line spoken by Sephiroth, which clearly just refers to one person - himself. 6. "Start" or possibly even "Origin" could also be used here. 10. Itadaki is the noun of itadaku, which means to receive or take. It may have a more complex meaning. I am currently researching this one. 11. This one is really hard to translate effectively into English. The main reason is that horse-racing vocabulary doesn't come across quite right if you insert the word Chocobo, but my literal Japanese translation is too wordy, if not outright contradictory of itself. Consequently, as with the Internet translation (which went for Racing Chocobos - Place Your Bets), I have gone for a more abstract translation. 19. Using the Japanese spelling this would be Aerith's Theme. 23. This is the exact same phrasing as disc 1, track 17. Attack would be fine too, but I like the Internet translation's "raid" so I have kept it intact. 4. Since Japanese doesn't specify, "A Secret" would be an equally valid translation. 5. Narrow-minded or Intolerant in place of Parochial is also okay. 14. 16. Sometimes people write One-Winged Angel. English rules for hyphenation in newly coined words and phrases are not fixed, so either is fine. 18. Staff Roll may be in katakana but it's not the phrase we use in English. =============================================================================== 2. Arrangements and Orchestrations ----------- =============================================================================== This section covers all the rearranged versions of Final Fantasy VII songs that have been released. Unfortunately Final Fantasy VII did not get a full CD of orchestrated or arranged music, nor a Piano Collections CD, thus making it the least rearranged soundtrack of all the Final Fantasy games.
