AUTHOR'S NOTE |_____ \ | _______________________________ | / \ |/ | | \| / / \ | | / \ /______/ \______\ As you may already know, there is a Black Magic FAQ that has been made for Vivi on GameFAQs. I was surprised that there wasn't a FAQ for White Magic so guess what? That's right, I'm typing this up for those who might need info or finding equipment on White Magic. So I welcome you to The White Magic FAQ. The White Mages in this game are also Summoners as well. Not many people use these characters a lot in battle but if you can use them well they can be great characters to fight along side you. There are ways on using the White magic effectively. All you have to do is think about it and set up your team according to the place you are heading in the game. Read this FAQ and you learn more about the White Magic of Final Fantasy IX. Thank you for reading this FAQ and I will see you some other time, some other FAQ. -Gold Mage (Thomas Hunt) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _________________________________ / \ _____| 2. WHITE MAGIC IN-DEPTH |_____ \ | _______________________________ | / \ |/ | | \| / / \ | | / \ /______/ \______\ In this section I have listed all of the White Magic in this game. It will tell you small tips and some other useful information that you may want to know about the Magic. It will also tell you who can learn the Magic and how to use that Magic to its full potential. So let's get to it. Berserk ------- Now Berserk is a status effect that makes your target only attack. It cannot use any Magic or special abilities when in Berserk. But it also increases the physical attack power increases. Now there are two ways for this. You can use it on a party member with a high attack power and now use for Magic. Use it on Zidane for example and he will attack by himself. You will have no control over him. Use this with Haste for a great combo; with higher speed and strength you'll wonder what you'd do without it. For the second choice you can use it on a monster that mainly uses magic and has a weak attack. This means they won't be able to attack you with their Magic so this will make your battle much easier. Blind ----- Blind is kind of the opposite of Berserk. The only difference is that there is no way you can use this on your party and get a good result. But when you use this on a monster that has a high attack power, it will inflict Darkness on them. Darkness hurts the eyes and there is a good chance that their physical attack will miss. But remember, now matter to what monster in the game, even in Darkness, Magic will always hit. Magic can't miss you. This goes for you as well. If Dagger or Eiko are inflicted with Darkness, don't worry too much about it because it's only your physical attack accuracy that is reduced. Confuse ------- Confuse is a pain in the backside if one of your party members is inflicted with it. This is also a great annoyance spell to cast on you enemies. Confusion makes you loose control of the character and there is a chance that they will either attack themselves or someone else in you party. You should cure Confusion as quick as possible with an Esuna or hit them with a psychical attack. Casting this on your enemies is a great way to slow them down during battle. Cure/Cura/Curaga ---------------- These 3 spells are probably the most important out of all of the White Magic and you will probably use this more than anything thing else. You will know Cure from an early stage in the game and as your progress and collect more equipment you will learn Cura and then Curaga. Cura heals a medium amount of HP and Curaga heals a lot more. If you are going to heal a character with about 1000 HP in damage, don't waste your MP on Curaga when using a simple Cura will do the job nicely. Now lets talk Zombie. Zombie is a status effect that makes an enemy or party member the undead. So using Cure, Cura or Curaga will damage your party member instead of healing them. You will need to be careful when you are healing sometimes. In areas like the Iifa Tree where there are tonnes of Undead monsters. But because it damages your party members, doesn't mean it can't hurt your opponents as well. Using Cure, Cura and Curaga will do damage to the Undead in battle. Especially the Iifa Tree boss, because it is also undead. But I will explain a different way on beating him a little bit later. Dispel ------ Dispel is a good spell to use when your enemy is powering up. Dispel will get rid of Haste, Slow, Reflect, Shell, Protect and Float. So you can get rid of these status effects off you enemy and then you can start to hurt them normally again. A good spell that should be used well. Esuna ----- Esuna is the spell form of a Remedy. It will cure most status effects off your party member so using this when you are Confused, Sleeping or Poisoned is a quick way to get yourself out and back into battle again. It won't just rid of those status effect either, use it on everything if you're not sure. Float ----- Now your enemies may use this on you in battle. But it is a good idea to cast this on yourself if you need to. While you are floating you will receive no damage from earth-based attacks like Earthquake. But you will get more damage from Wind based attacks like Aero. There are some bosses that this will work great on by casting this on your team. Haste ----- Haste is good to speed up your characters. It doubles the speed of the ATB gauge so you can get more attacks in much quicker than before. Use this on your powerful characters and get ready to use some powerful combos. Holy ---- This is one of the most powerful spells in the game. Holy is a super strong spell that will do massive damage to basically all elements. Use this on Shadow-based enemies for the best results. And some of the strongest enemies and bosses are Shadow-based. Jewel ----- Jewel is kinda useless. All it does is extract Ore from the enemy. This is good if you need some Ore but that's all it can do. Life/Full-Life -------------- This is also another important spell. This is the spell version of a Phoenix Down. This will revive a KOed party member with some HP. Full-Life will revive a party member with all HP. This is good for tough battles, even though it uses much more MP. Now when I talked about the Undead status in the Cure/Cura/Curaga section I said that healing spells hurt them. Now Life and Full-Life will kill an Undead automatically. It may miss sometimes but it will kill them in one hit. The same thing happens when you use a Phoenix Down on an Undead. Mini ---- Mini is a spell that I don't use that often. But when you think about it, Mini can be used in a very powerful way. Now what Mini does is make your character a couple of inches tall. This will make you opponent vulnerable to many attacks, so use this when you are in trouble. But don't rely on this all the time because it won't work on bosses. Might ----- This enhances the attack power of the character you cast it upon. This is a great idea for your attacker characters like Zidane and Steiner. That's all for this spell, on to the next. Panacea ------- This is a spell that will not be used too much in the game. I know for a fact that I didn't use it too much when I play. Anyways, This will cure Poison and Venom from your party members. Poison and Venom are a pain if you don't get rid of them quickly, so it is recommended that you get rid of it quickly. Protect ------- Now this is a great spell. It will lower the damage your character receives from psychical attacks. It also has a counterpart called Shell, but I'll explain that later. Protect will really come in handy when you come face-to- face with a powerful attacker. So use this as much as possible. Reflect ------- Reflect is another great spell. Reflect will reflect magic back to its caster. This can be good and bad at the same time. It can be good because you won't get hurt but it can be bad. It can be bad because if an elemental monster's magic is reflected, it will heal them. For example, if water-based monster casts Water on you and it is reflected it will heal it because of its element. Now for another good point. There is an ability that Vivi can learn which increases the damage a reflect spell will make. So if you cast reflect on your enemy and then cast Cure on it so it is reflected, it will heal you more. And if you cast Reflect on a party member and use Black Magic on the reflected shield, it will do more damage to the enemy. Regen ----- This is like the friendly poison. Instead of hurting you every so often, it heals you a little every so often. This is a good way to keep your HP up during the battle. But be warned, if you are inflicted with Zombie your Regen will become a substitute for Poison. So if this is to happen, cast Dispel on that character to stop Regen or cure the Zombie status. Scan ---- Scan is a spell that will tell you all about the enemy. It will tell you its types, its HP and MP, its strength and its weakness. It will also tell you if it is carrying any items. This is a good way to find out all about your enemy while you are fighting it. But it doesn't work on bosses and that is a problem. Shell ----- Now when I was talking about Protect I said that there was a counterpart. Shell will reduce the damage you receive from Magic. This can be good but it will also reduce the amount that Cure/Cura/Curaga will do on you. But you can cast it on a enemy that keeps healing itself, but then you can't hurt it with Magic. So you choose what you're going to do with the spell. Silence ------- Ah, a wise choice you have chosen grasshopper. Silence will not allow you to cast any Magic. This is good for your magic-based enemies that are giving the irrits. (yes irrits is a word, my mother says it! So it has to be real :P) Stona ----- Ever since movies like Dude, Where's My Car? Every time I think of the spell Stona, I think of the stoners of real life. Okay back to the spell. Stona will cure Petrifaction and Gradual Petrifaction. When you are Petrified it is the same as being KOed. If the rest of your party is KOed or Petrified it's Game Over for you. So getting rid of this status as quick as possible is a very good idea. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _________________________________ / \ _____| 3.
