So I did some quick tests with my GS, and it turns out, the formula doesn't cap at 99...heheheh... (See Chapter Three, iv) Version 2.0 (06/01/2006) Cleaned a few things up; a mistake in the stats for the Venetia Shield has been corrected. For new content, I put in a "current Magic Stones" mod, and I've added a new section about the "Save the Queen" sword along with some formulas (credit goes to SoftReset for that). Version 1.9 (04/01/2006) Fairly big update here; I've noted that all my codes also work for the PAL version FFIX, apparently. Instructions for getting Beatrix have also been clarified. A couple new glitches were brought to my attention, (regarding Dali/ Treno), so I've addressed all that here now, (thanks to knivesx2004x & Ron B.). A bit about level manipulation for Beatrix has been added as well, (thanks to rebirth flame 2002). I've also changed the Skill Adjustment codes section due to some new information about Thunder Slash, (thanks to Terence). Finally, several other revisions have been made which are not worth mentioning. Oh, and did I forget to mention my new Ascii art? ^^ Version 1.7 (12/14/2005) Added an adjustment codes section for Thunder Slash and Iai Strike. Thanks to SoftReset for helping me out with this. I also edited Thunder Slash's skill description. Some boss strategies were adjusted, as well as some other minor details. I've also added an 'Openings for Updates' section. Version 1.6 (07/10/2005) Did a full revision of the entire guide. Also made additions and corrections to Beatrix's equipment list. Version 1.5 (07/04/2005) Corrected Beatrix's highest possible stats for HP, MP, Strength and Magic. Thanks to rebirth flame 2002 for this! Version 1.4 (07/01/2005) I found a better quote for the intro, and corrected a code. Version 1.3 (07/01/2005) Made some corrections concerning functionality on a Gameshark CDX. I also added in a Checksum Bypass code. Other than that, I've also made a few adjustments to the rest of the FAQ, since there are fewer stall points on the PS2 than first believed. Version 1.2 (05/27/2005) Updated my Chapter One policies, touched up some suggestions for the SCC, and not to mention other minor errors throughout. Version 1.1 (05/24/2005) Corrected a number of mistakes in grammar, spelling, and formatting. Version 1.0 (05/22/2005) Wrote this awesome FAQ. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ii - Disclaimer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This FAQ is Copyright 2005 by me. I do not want to be asked about where you can find all the necessary system accessories/devices to hack this game, nor do I want any inquisitions about material that is irrelevant to this guide. If you are having trouble understanding a particular section of the walkthrough and have a valid question, that is fine, but I do not want to be pestered for additional support on how to play Final Fantasy IX. The reason I wrote this FAQ is due to the fact that the other guides on Beatrix just aren't sufficient; they don't go in-depth. But what really prompted this guide was the trouble I had on my first play-through with Beatrix because of hindrances with the story's events. The other walkthroughs failed to mention a number of places not to bring Beatrix, namely Ipsen's Castle. It was there that my game got stuck as it would freeze at the boss battle. Since it is impossible to leave that place when you enter during the story event, it is impossible to switch her out of the group. I thought my file was ruined, but then I came across different codes which solved my every problem while simultaneously giving additional freedom for making use of Beatrix, as well as other characters, at various times and places where they are not intended to be, according to the story. And with those codes, I am taking the Beatrix experience to a completely whole other level---not only is there coverage of everything for a normal, full battle party game with Beatrix, but also a walkthrough for a Single Character Challenge Game of her own! Note that the greatest benefit is that ALL THE CODES IN THIS FAQ ALL FUNCTION PERFECTLY ON THE GAMESHARK CDX, AND NOT ONLY ON THE GAMESHARK PRO!!! Now, please enjoy my extensive walkthrough which I consider to be stalwart...or even...perfect. -=============================================================================- CHAPTER TWO: GAMESHARK CODES -=============================================================================- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i - System Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In order to gain access to Beatrix throughout the game, along with the ability to edit her character, you must be able to meet either requirement A or B. REQUIREMENT A ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` * Gameshark Pro (Version 2.3 or higher). * An older PlayStation (1998 model or earlier). (It must have a rear port for the Gameshark Pro to plug into.) * Final Fantasy IX (NTSC/PAL). ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` REQUIREMENT B ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` * Gameshark CDX. * A PlayStation (newer than the 1998 model), OR a PlayStation 2. * Final Fantasy IX (NTSC/PAL). ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ii - Hacking Beatrix Into The Active Party ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The code below allows for any character to be inserted into the game. In this FAQ, it will be used mainly for the purpose of getting Beatrix. I know that code is lengthy, however, it is absolutely necessary in this guide to insert characters other than Beatrix for various points of the game. That is what makes this code infinitely more effective than that other one-lined code that can be found elsewhere. -= Character Modifier Codes =- Switch Character (Slot 1) (R1 + ? Press and R1 and SELECT together. That character's name will be changed, but not the portrait, yet. (WARNING: There MUST be a character in Slot 1! Do NOT use the code on an empty slot, otherwise the game will crash). * Enter a battle. Beatrix will appear as your battle character. Everything should be functioning completely normally---both technically and visually. End the battle. (An alternative to battling however, is to just go to the Roster and switch her out, leave the Roster, return, then place her back in again). * Open your menu screen. Beatrix's portrait will now be in Slot 1, and everything should be totally glitch-free. Voila! You have successfully obtained Beatrix as a fully playable character! If you're wondering about the character you switched for Beatrix, don't worry; he/she has just been safely placed into the Party Formation Screen (Roster) where he/she can be safely retrieved. If you follow every step correctly, everything will function properly and there will be no problems. Note 1: Beatrix will remain in the game until the game removes her, that is, whenever the party is rearranged in accordance to the story's progression. Simply hack her back in again and she'll be exactly as you last left her. Note 2: It is not a good idea to make doubles, for example, having two Beatrixs in your party. Doing this could very well cause problems. Note 3: Beatrix will cause the game to hang/freeze at certain events that require other characters for story purposes. See Chapter Six for a full in-depth guide on all the stall points and how to get around them. Note 4: If you're doing the SCC, make sure you always have a character with more than 0HP to swap Beatrix in and out with, because if you accidently get into a battle with all dead characters, you get a freezing game over. Note 5: If you use the codes properly as I've outlined, there will not be any problems with your game. However, if you do something to corrupt it, find help elsewhere because I will not be held responsible. The best I can do is provide you with a Checksum Bypass Code to load corrupted files (if you accidently messed something up and saved your game): -= Checksum Bypass =- ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` D01F982C DEFE 801F9836 2400 ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iii - Weapon Modifier Codes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following codes modify Beatrix's equipped sword. It just makes her look like more of a normal character next to the others when I see her at 0/64 MagStones. (For example, a name like "Yunalesca" will be displayed as "Yunales") ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- vi - Skill Adjustment Codes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have you ever noticed how Thunder Slash almost never seems to hit? Some people blamed the programmers for mixing up its hit rate with Iai Strike's. Well, here's what the real deal with all this is according to Terence: "The main problem is that Thunder Slash has been given an incorrect Effect code, which causes it to do Demi-like damage instead of weapon-based damage. This means that instead of using the weapon's Accuracy value, it must rely on its own Accuracy value to hit. This Accuracy value is 0%. While stats can help manipulate this to make it actually hit, it's still a particularly pathetic hit rate. The base hit percentage of Iai Strike is fine: 30%, compared to 35 to 50% for most other statuses. In fact, Death (the spell itself) has a base rate of 35%. The only abilities that have a base Accuracy that is equal to or lower than Iai Strike are Bio (which does damage anyways - Poison has a higher chance of inflicting the status but doesn't do damage), Doom (not sure why), Matra Magic (it does have a far lower Ability cost, as well as a number of extra uses as opposed to straight death), Frost (equal chance and highly useful) and Mustard Bomb (equal chance and highly useful too). Even if you discount all of that, there's no way Iai Strike should have a base percentage of *0%*, which is what Thunder Slash currently has. Now, when you have an ability that uses weapon accuracy (as indicated by which effect it's given), then the accuracy portion of the ability data is ignored so it doesn't really matter. But when it's a *status* effect... then it no longer uses weapon accuracy, so it *does* matter. I don't believe Thunder Slash was ever meant to be a Demi-type ability. Have you looked at it? 0% Accuracy, sure, but it also takes off 19% of the target's HP. 19%? What kind of number is that? And for a single target ability? If it were a straight damage tech though, that 19% would be 190% of normal damage (a little under Climhazzard's power, but remember: Climhazzard is area), which when considered as an elemental attack, would make it a fine ability under Steiner's[/Beatrix's] control. Do note the MP cost while you're considering all this, by the way: Vivi's Demi takes off more HP, has a higher rate than Iai Strike and costs less MP to boot. You'll probably want to change the Effect code (not the Hit Rate code) of Thunder Slash from 0x11 (Demi-type attack) to 0x13 (standard physical attack). You may also note that 0x13 is the same as the *Power* of Thunder Slash, so you might try to argue that it's Power and Effect that got transposed, which might mean that Thunder Slash should have a Power of 0x11 (which means 170% of normal Att)." Personally, the notion that the 0x11 and 0x13 values were inversed sounds quite valid, and the fact that Thunder Slash is inherently lightning-elemental gives even more reason to believe that the programmers erred. Like, what kind of ability causes exactly 19% damage (no more & no less), regardless of elemental properties? So with all that in mind, I've put together the following codes to adjust the Thunder Slash skill in accordance to Terence's suggestion, so not only will it now cause phyical damage (and generally more of it), the hit rate will depend on the equipped weapon's accuracy rating. Well, use them at your own discretion. (Note: These codes are non-saveable, so they must be kept on to take effect). -= Thunder Slash (V2) Adjustment =- ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` D01044B8 0100 8010A820 0013 -> Thunder Slash's effect causes standard physical attack damage. She is a merciless Holy Knight who has mastered the ultimate Sword Arts, thus making her a warrior who is feared by all who have heard her name. Reputation aside, Beatrix does have a heart, though she keeps it hidden deep within her being. Through the course of the game, it arises and conflicts with her sense of duty, leading her to make a choice as to which one truly matters most... And that's when Squaresoft decided to make Beatrix a playable (sub)character, thus allowing people like me to take full advantage of her playability with a Gameshark! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ii - Pros ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This section points out Beatrix's strengths as a character. * Beatrix is a combination of a White Mage and a Knight, so she is very versatile in that she can be on the offensive, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy; or taking a break from battle to restore the party's conditions. * Beatrix has a wider variety for what she can equip; she has most of Steiner's and Freya's heavy armaments, but can also wear some light armor (like the Rubber Suit for instance, which Steiner cannot). * Beatrix has excellent stats---superior MP, speed, magic and spirit compared to Steiner who is like her counterpart. * Beatrix enters the game with all of her Seiken and White Magic abilities learned, so she does't need to accumulate Ability Points. * Beatrix's White Magic is a mix of both Garnet's and Eiko's White Magic skill-sets. * Beatrix is the only character in the game who can equip the Save the Queen sword, which is the single best and only quad stat-raising piece of equipment in the game. For that reason alone, it's a good idea not to replace it. In addition, it also has tremendous potential in raw attack power, beating out the Excalibur II after reaching level 86... * Beatrix can be brought almost anywhere in the game; she is glitch-free in battles, she works on the World Map, in dungeons, towns, shops, menu screens, and will load up every time without fail. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iii - Cons ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This section points out Beatrix's faults as a character. * Beatrix has no Trance Bar. * Beatrix's portrait is never displayed on Saved Game files. (Irrelevant) * The Save the Queen sword is not a powerful sword (per se, see the next section). It is Beatrix's only designated weapon, so it cannot be unequipped without a Gameshark. * When all eight normal characters are obtained, Beatrix's portrait no longer appears at the bottom of Equipment Shop Menu Screens. Oh well. * Beatrix does not have, nor is she able to use, Support Abilities without the use of a Gameshark. * She can't be renamed without using a GS. * Beatrix does not get healed when using Tents on the World Map. (They work at Save Moogles though.) * Beatrix causes the game to glitch, hang and/or freeze during certain events and cutscenes. (Refer to Chapter Six to find out how to avoid lockups and glitches to get the most out of Beatrix all-throughout the game). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iv - The Unique "Save the Queen" & Its Damage Formulas ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alright, the thing about the "Save the Queen" sword is that it has a significantly different base damage formula than all the other weapons in the game. See below: Damage Base = (Wpn Atk Pwr + Lvl - Target P.Def) Essentially what that means, is that with every level Beatrix gains, her physical attack damage is increased for when the StQ sword is equipped. So if that weapon's attack power is 23, and her current level is 99, she'll have an attack power of 122, so using her Attack command will yield a damage output that surpasses the Excalibur II's 108 attack power! FYI, that's like 8000-9999 dmg/Attack). Great, right?! Not entirely. Let's look at the damage formulas for Beatrix's Seiken skills: Stock Break = [(Wpn Atk Pwr * 15) / 10] Climhazzard = Wpn Atk Pwr * 2 Shock = Wpn Atk Pwr * 3 See the problem yet? The damage outputs of these skills are dependent on the attack power of the currently equipped weapon, and because the Save the Queen only has an attack power of 23, these skills will not get much stronger over time as Beatrix gains levels. In fact, Beatrix's regular Attack will surpass them all. My level 99 Beatrix was striking for +9000 damage, whereas Shock was barely breaking 4000. So for the sake of her skills, it's a good idea to upgrade her weapon with a GS; (kind of an odd trade-off in a sense though, eh?) -=============================================================================- CHAPTER FOUR: COMBAT SKILLS -=============================================================================- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i - Seiken Skills ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Seiken Abilities: ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Thunder Slash ~ 24 MP * A Thunder-elemental attack on a single enemy for 19% damage, (go figure). While this attack is moderately powerful, it is incredibly flawed with its accuracy (due to the fact that it's bugged. See Chapter II.vi for a code-fix) Stock Break ~ 26 MP * A strong non-elemental attack on all enemies. This is a great skill to use on all enemies, as it is very reliable. Climhazzard ~ 32 MP * An even more powerful non-elemental attack on all enemies. This is like an uber-Stock Break attack. Shock ~ 46 MP * A devastatingly powerful blow to a single enemy. This is Beatrix's ultimate sword skill, and it isn't cheap MP-wise. However, Climhazzard will become the optimal skill choice later in the game when it reaches the 9999 damage limit shortly after Shock does. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ii - White Magic Spells ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White Magic Abilities: ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Cura ~ 10 MP * Restores +1500 HP, single/multiple target. (Mid-level healing magic) Silence ~ 08 MP * Prevents single/multiple targets from casting magic. Life ~ 08 MP * Recovers a character from KO, restoring some HP. (Instant Kill on the Undead) Reflect ~ 06 MP * Reflects magic attacks back onto the caster. Full-Life ~ 24 MP * Recovers a character from KO with full HP. (The only other character to have this great spell apart from Eiko). Blind ~ 06 MP * Causes Darkness, lowering physical attack accuracy. Esuna ~ 20 MP * Removes various abnormal status effects. (But not any abnormal Magic Status) Holy ~ 36 MP * Causes Holy Damage. Very powerful. (The only other character to have this apart from Eiko). ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` -=============================================================================- CHAPTER FIVE: STATUS -=============================================================================- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i - Starting Stats And Equipment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following are Beatrix's base stats if she is hacked into the game before you level anyone up. For level manipulation's sake, Freya's starting level is that of Zidane's if you fight the Zagnohl at the Festival of the Hunt, but if not, it'll be equal to the mean of Zidane and Vivi's levels. However, if you shark Beatrix in before you level any of those characters up, she'll begin at Level 1 and will not be affected by Freya's level, since Beatrix's "existence flag" will have already been set. Beatrix will remain at LV1 for the rest of the game if you take her out the party after doing this, until you use her to fight battles and gain experience. So if you hacked her in and out at the beginning of the game then neglect her, she'll be at LV1 when you get her normally at Alexandria Castle for the first time. Heh, this also makes it seem as though Beatrix slaughters your party three times, all while being at level 1 ^_^ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ii - Stat Maximization Equipment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This section provides all the weapons and armor that will increase Beatrix's stat growth when equipped after so many levels. Of course, if you like, you can also follow it for more information on stall points and what to do to keep Beatrix in the party for the majority of the game. This section is flexible that way if you want to use other party members in conjunction to Beatrix all-throughout, (though Chapter Six, ii goes into it just for that as well). Note: When Beatrix takes the place of a mandatory character such as an avatar (like Zidane in most cases) the game will assume that Zidane is still in the active party, so he'll appear for all story cutscenes without any glitches. This is most convenient way to bypass everything from Madain Sari (after recruiting Amarant) onwards. Before then, it doesn't really matter who you replace, since everyone is mandatory. However, there are a couple exceptions regarding Zidane and Garnet at certain times/places, more on this as you follow Chapter Six, i/ii of the walkthrough below. IMPORTANT In this play-through, keep in mind that it is a Single Character Challenge, so apart from adding Beatrix into the game, this is a legit play-through. That means no stat modifier codes to make her a goddess. It also means not abusing all of the Support Abilities codes (see Chapter Two, iv, for a list of Support Abilities I've assigned to her character for use). The same thing applies to equipment modifier codes; you can only give Beatrix a different sword if you acquire one normally through the course of the game. Actually, I suggest keeping the Save the Queen sword equipped on her until around Disc Three, or even right to the end, as this sword will increase her stat growth quite notably. Out of fairness, I also recommend selling off all of her other initial equipment as it's really too powerful early in the game; so just use whatever other equipment the game makes available throughout. Note: In this walkthrough, I call for some levelling up occasionally. Due to the fact that the Beatrix SCC is not very difficult, feel free to spice things up by also making it a Low-Level Game---that is, if you're up to the extra challenge! \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ~ Disc One \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ PRIMA VISTA ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` You'll be in a dark room. Before you proceed to fight the boss, you may want to level up Zidane a level

driven.

|BOSS: Prison Cage 1
|STRATEGY: Just use Zidane's Trance skills (Free Energy). Heal Garnet.

*End of Stall Point*

Here's the next battle. *HTB*

|BOSS: Prison Cage 2
|STRATEGY: Kill of the other characters, and make sure Vivi doesn't die. Then
           just go all out on the boss.

Afterwards, replace Zidane with Beatrix. Return to the ship, save, and go see
Baku.

|BOSS: Baku
|STRATEGY: Just give him the one-hit KO we've become accustomed to. (In case
           you forgot, it's the still the 'Attack' command.)

Make a few purchases from Cinna, then proceed through the forest.

|BOSS: Plant Brain

graphic glitches when the story events get triggered, since Garnet becomes the
avatar while inside the inn. More importantly, if you do go in, DO NOT SAVE AT
THE MOOGLE, or else you risk corruption.

Go shopping, collect items. The game will take over in terms of story just
before you meet Black Waltz 2. *HTB*

    GIZAMALUKE'S GROTTO
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Fight your way through, collect items, find the Moogles, then Save. Climb out
of the tunnel. I know Beatrix is strong, but not nearly strong enough to take
on Grand Dragons by herself...yet. So when you're outside, only wander in the
forests to fight the Garudas. If you've been giving Beatrix any of the Support
Abilities, it's wise to have her set with Locomotive for the immunity to Stop.
Just use everything you've got, and level up past LV 20.
When you're done, strap on a Glass buckle for some protection against water
damage, then proceed to the boss.
|BOSS: Gizamaluke
|STRATEGY: Alright, a boss that can take some punishment! If you have a Tent,
           you can use it on the boss to inflict Silence/Darkness. Aside from
           that, cast Shock, cut him up a bit, and heal if necessary.
*Immediately after this event, before going anywhere else, place Steiner in
Slot 1 so that he is the only character you switch for Beatrix. You do not want
to be replacing Garnet at all during this event, especially if you make a visit
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    CLEYRA'S TRUNK

```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    CLEYRA
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Collect items, then there's a boss fight.

|BOSS: Antlion
|STRATEGY: Use a Tent to inflict a number of status ailments on him. Equip
           Beatrix with some Desert Boots for some speed. Other than that, just
           go all out with your best skills.

Fight the soldiers in Cleyra's Trunk, then return and fight your way to the
cathedral where you can save and prepare to fight Beatrix.

|BOSS: Beatrix 2
|STRATEGY: The same survival strategies apply here as they did last time.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    ALEXANDRIA
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
*Stall Point*

Exit the cage. Steiner is your avatar, but don't sub in Beatrix yet. At least,
not until you're reunited with Zidane and the rest. Once Zidane is your avatar,
switch him with Beatrix, and continue fighting battles along the way.

*End of Stall Point*

Hurry down to the next boss battle.

|BOSS: Zorn & Thorn
|STRATEGY: Focus on attacking only whichever enemy is being instilled with
           energy. Stick to basic attacks for now.

Save your game, because you're about to see you're reflection staring back at
you once more. (Also make sure you have immunities to Sleep and Silence.)

|BOSS: Beatrix 3
|STRATEGY: Just survive (sort of) like the last two times.

Now the game will actually give you Beatrix for a few battles, so don't hack
her in until after you get to a Moogle. (This is somewhat of a Stall Point)
But once you're at the save point, it's okay. Then leave.

|BOSS: Ralvuimago
|STRATEGY: Attack this boss with spells like Holy when it coils up, refraining
           from delivering any physical blows to it.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    PINNACLE ROCKS
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Don't replace Garnet with Beatrix even though she's the avatar here. Do it with
anyone else. Now collect the items, solve the puzzle, and leave. Go to
Lindblum, then to Qu's Marsh Excavation Site.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    FOSSIL ROO
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
|BOSS: Armodullahan
|STRATEGY: Beat it down with Shock.

Stay away from the above boss; it'll never go down. Move on to the next boss.

|BOSS: Lani
|STRATEGY: This girl can put up a fight, but so can you. Show her who's boss by
           using Shock and casting Holy. Heal when necessary.

Once you get all the way through to the outer continent, go to Conde Petie,
then make your way to Black Mage Village and stock up on a bunch of Hi-Potions,
as well as other items and accessories. Afterwards, get to the Mountain Path.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    MOUNTAIN PATH
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Collect items, and Save at the Moogle.

|BOSS: Hilgigars
|STRATEGY: Cast Silence on him so he doesn't heal himself with Curaga. Other
           than that, just make use of the usual basic strategy, healing with
           Cura or Hi-Potions when low on health.

Get through Madain Sari, then get out and level up to about LV 35-40, as it has
been a while. When you're done, go to the Iifa Tree.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    IIFA TREE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Note that here, you can kill a number of undead enemies with a Life spell or
with a Phoenix Down.

|BOSS: Soulcage
|STRATEGY: The easy way to beat Soulcage is to use a Phoenix Down. The more
           fulfilling way is to shower him with White Magic spells, casting
           Cura and/or Holy. Heal up when necessary.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    MADAIN SARI
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Make sure Zidane is in Slot 1 here. There's a one on one battle for Zidane.
*HTB*

|BOSS: Red Scarlet
|STRATEGY: To teach this guy a lesson, have a little patience. After he shouts
           out, "Here I go!" wait for him to stand still in his central
           position, then let loose with Shock. Repeat this process, healing
           when your HP gets low.

At this point you'll be able to exchange characters normally. However, you'll
notice that if you try to sub in Zidane normally you won't even be able to move
him (as his portrait will be greyed). To fix this, as you'll have to in the
future as some events get trickier, refer back to Chapter Two, ii of the guide
for the correct button commands to use with the Character Modifier Codes.
Remember, it works the same way for other characters as it does for Beatrix.

    IIFA TREE

Fight your way through, killing off the enemies until you get to a hidden Save

The game will give you Beatrix normally along with Steiner. When you get her,
she'll come with a whole new set of equipment, though she'll still have her
same Support Abilities set from before. Anyway, here you'll fight Mistodons
again, so first kill off Steiner, then just use Stock Break against them.

When you control Zidane, switch in Beatrix. There's an optional boss battle in
the library.

At this point, your equipment should resemble the following:
Wpn: Save the Queen or Coral Sword
Hlm: Gold Helm
Wst: Thunder Gloves
Amr: Plate Mail
Acs: Dark Matter
You should also set up at least the following Support Abilities: Auto-Regen,
HP+20%, Antibody, and perhaps Auto-Potion.

|BOSS: TANTARIAN
|STRATEGY: Attack the book and incur anywhere between 150-200 HP of damage to
           open the book to its true form. Then, avoid physical strikes, using
           only Beatrix's Holy spell. Repeat the process until it's dead.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    LINDBLUM
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Collect potions for Cid, buy items, then head to Black Mage Village using the
Blue Narciss. From there, head to the Northern sink hole in the Desert.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    DESERT PALACE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
*When Kuja asks which four party members to take with you to Oeilvert, DO NOT
CHOOSE BEATRIX as one of them. Doing so will cause the game to freeze, so just
choose whoever else.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    FORGOTTEN CONTINENT/OEILVERT
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Now that you're out and about, Save on the World Map, then sub in Beatrix in
place of Zidane. Do this BEFORE you head into Oeilvert, and only do it with
Zidane, or else the game will hang at the entrance when the cutscene takes
place.

When inside, collect all the treasure, activate the switches, then proceed to
the boss.

For the boss, you should equip Clear Headed, and any equipment with Wind-
elemental defense properties.

|BOSS: Ark
|STRATEGY: Avoid using Holy spells in this battle. Instead, focus on using the
           Shock skill. Auto-Regen or Auto-Potion are life savers here because
           Ark can reduce Beatrix's HP to 1. Just be ready to heal quickly.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    DESERT PALACE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Here, Save. Replace Eiko with Beatrix, and make sure she has the following
support skills equipped at all times from now on: Insomniac, Clear Headed, and
Jelly.

Solve the puzzles, acquire some items, and Save. Remove any of the equipment
you've obtained in this dungeon if you've put any of it on, then face the boss.

|BOSS: Valia Pira
|STRATEGY: This boss is not hard. Make good use of your Seiken skills, as well
           as your offensive White Magic.

Finish up, then go to Esto Gaza on the Lost Continent.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    MOUNT GULUG
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Note: Here, you must replace either Zidane or Vivi with Beatrix or else the
      game will hang at the boss battle.

Collect items, and give the enemies a thrashing. By the way, Body Temp should
be equipped for the enemies, and Antibody for the boss. Fight all of the Red
Dragons too, since they give some decent Experience.

|BOSS: Meltigemini
|STRATEGY: When Beatrix is infected with the Virus status abnormality, don't
           waste a turn even bothering to cure her with a Vaccine. Just unload
           with Shock, and use Cura when your health goes down about half-way
           to ensure your survival.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    DAGUERRO
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Following Lindblum and Alexandria, you'll have access to an airship. Start
completing sidequests, especially the Chocobo one. Also, go shopping around in
Daguerro. Outside there you can attempt the Grand Dragons. Be sure to put
Beatrix in the back row. Here's some advice on how Beatrix should be set up to
fight them:

Wpn: Save the Queen/Ragnarok
Hlm: Genji Helm
Wst: Defense Gloves
Amr: Diamond Armor
Acs: Ribbon/Coral Ring
You should also set up at least the following Support Abilities: Auto-Regen,
Auto-Haste, Auto-Potion, HP+20%, and Gamble Defense.

|ENEMY: Grand Dragon
|STRATEGY: Go all out, give it everything you've got because it hits hard. Only
           use non-elemental attacks like Shock. Don't bother with spells
           except to heal.

Once you've killed one Grand Dragon, its smooth sailing from there. Keep
fighting them, levelling up to LV 60 or higher. When you're done tying some
loose ends, go to Ipsen's Castle on the Forgotten Continent.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    IPSEN'S CASTLE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
First off, equip Beatrix with a weaker sword, the Iron sword being the best
choice, but the Save the Queen is decent as well because of stat growth. As
I've said before, *make sure Beatrix is set in place of the avatar (Zidane in
this case), because the game will freeze at the boss fight.

If you encounter Veterans, either run away or kill them quickly because they
can cast an instant death spell on Beatrix. Anyways, collect items and get
ready for the next battle. Protection against ice is not a bad idea for it.

|BOSS: Taharka
|STRATEGY: Have Auto-Regen equipped (as you should always) and just keep the
           pressure on him. Use basic attacks, as well as Holy, (not so many
           skills because of the weapon effect this place has. Don't forget to
           heal.

Be sure to re-equip Beatrix accordingly when you leave.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    EARTH SHRINE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
After you visit all the three Shrines, Zidane and Quina will be left. Swap
either of them with Beatrix, kill off the other, then go to the boss. Equip
Auto-Float, and have some protection against the Fire element.

|BOSS: Earth Guardian
|STRATEGY: Attack with your strongest skills, make use of Beatrix's negative
           status infliction spells. Make sure to heal her when her health
           gets lower because this boss is no pushover.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    TERRA
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
*Stall Point*

Make your way through Bran Bal, buying items and equipment. Also be sure to
grab the Minerva's Plate. Then move on to Pandemonium. The upcoming battles
with Zidane are story-driven, so do not hack in Beatrix for any of those
battles. When Zidane is totally reunited with the group, Save, then switch in
Beatrix.

*End of Stall Point*

Collect items, especially the Carabini Mail, then Save at the Moogle. *Now it's
imperative that Beatrix is either replacing Zidane, or that you have Amarant in
the active party. Otherwise the game will freeze before the battle with the
Silver Dragon. Now, in preparation for the next three battles, equip Man Eater,
Locomotion, MP Attack and Auto-Reflect.

|BOSS: Silver Dragon
|STRATEGY: This boss is easy, just attack it however you like, just don't
           drain Beatrix's HP and MP too much. Heal up with items before you
           finish it off.

|BOSS: Garland
|STRATEGY: Go crazy, but not too crazy. Strike him physically as that will
           really inflict some heavy damage. Only use items to heal, and once
           again, bring up your health before the battle's end.

|BOSS: Kuja
|STRATEGY: Let everything out, do not hold back. Similar to the strategy above.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
~ Disc Four
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Now you're free to finish up all the sidequests. Do that now, be sure to get
the Maximillian from the Chocobo sidequest too if you're doing it. While you're
in Black Mage Village, stock up on plenty of items and accessories. Leave and
put Beatrix in the group. Afterwards, fly to the top of the Iifa Tree.
    MEMORIA
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
|BOSS: Nova Dragon
|STRATEGY: First off, use a Tent on him to inflict Blindness. Then use Shock,
           or Climhazzard (whichever one does 9999 HP damage as cheaply as
           possible) to your heart's content.

Note: In Memoria, you can have any mix of characters along with Beatrix.

Save at the funky Save Sphere. Make sure you've got Beatrix in your active
party, then venture through this world (it's very straight-forward). Collect
items, and fight all the bosses one after the other. But, make sure you take
preventative measures, like Body Temp, Locomotion, Insomniac, Clear Headed,
Jelly, Antibody, and any equipment that reduces elemental damage.

|BOSS: Maliris
|STRATEGY: At this point of the game, you should stick to using Climhazzard
           (or even Stock Break if it does enough damage), because by now
           Beatrix should be hitting the 9999 HP damage limit. Basically, keep
           using these skills, and healing when necessary.

|BOSS: Tiamat
|STRATEGY: Follow the same strategy written for Maliris.

|BOSS: Kraken
|STRATEGY: Follow the same strategy written for Tiamat.

|BOSS: Lich
|STRATEGY: Follow the same strategy written for Kraken. (Yeah...I know...)

The following boss is optional.

|BOSS: Hades
|STRATEGY: This boss is strong, but don't let up. It's important to keep your
           HP up, but even more so to shower Hades with Beatrix's Seiken
           skills. This boss has a countdown attack as well, so you have to be
           quick. At this point, don't bother casting the Holy spell anymore.
           Simply stick to Stock Break and Climhazzard.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    CRYSTAL WORLD
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

|BOSS: Deathguise
|STRATEGY: Do you know what "Seiken" means? It's Japanese for "Holy Sword".
           Now, show this freak what kind of person it takes to have such
           mastery in the Holy Sword Art. Show it no mercy---unveiling death's
           true guise unto it.

Head back and Save your game once more, then return.

|BOSS: Trance Kuja
|STRATEGY: For this battle, don't concern yourself with saving any items. Just
           show Kuja who's boss. Use Beatrix's most effective Seiken skills,
           and keep her health up, especially if Kuja casts Flare Star on her.
           If you cast Reflect on Beatrix it will ward off some of his magic.
           Continue attacking and soon, Kuja will get angry and cast the
           awesome Ultima spell and end the battle.

When you're given an opportunity to choose four party members, *DON'T choose
Beatrix as one of them, or else the game will hang. Fill up the Active party
with normal characters, then when you have access to your menu screen, sub in
Beatrix. She is the only character who hasn't been healed by the game, so do
it yourself right now. When you're ready, here comes the final battle.

|BOSS: Necron
|STRATEGY: Kill off your other party members. Be sure not to hold anything
           back now, because this is it. If you followed my prior Support
           Abilites recommendations, then Necron's Grand Cross spell will only
           inflict one status ailment on Beatrix (Mini) which you should treat
           promptly. Then proceed by using Stock Break and Climhazzard. In
           between attacks, heal Beatrix if her health gets even remotely low.
           Keep the pressure on him. It won't be long before victory attained.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
    CHOCOBO'S AIR GARDEN
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Now that you've beaten the game, there is one more challenge left... To defeat
Ozma. I have yet to do it myself... Well, obtain the blessings from all the
Spirits (those friendly monsters you find in various forests) so that Beatrix
can physically strike Ozma, and take away its Shadow Absorbing attribute. You
must level up to LV 99, and follow this kind of setup for Beatrix:

Wpn: Save the Queen/Ragnarok/...Excalibur II...but pretend I didn't say it :P
Hlm: Grand Helm
Wst: Defense Gloves
Amr: Grand Armor
Acs: Pumice Piece
Support Abilities: Auto-Regen, Auto-Haste, Auto-Life, Auto-Potion, HP+20%,
                   MP+20%, Gamble Defense, Chemist, Antibody, Clear Headed.

|BOSS: Ozma
|STRATEGY: There really is not much I can do to help you here. Ozma is a real
           tank. If you followed my recommendations, you'll absorb his Doomsday
           spell, and be immune to LV 5 Death, and LV 4 Holy. Stay healthy and
           cure Mini when Beatrix gets shrunken down. Use her Seiken skills to
           inflict 9999 HP damage as often as you can (unless her Save the
           Queen is equipped, in which case just use "Attack"), and keep
           praying that you'll be able to hold up. Auto-Life is good to
           counteract Ozma's Meteor spell once, but after that, just pray you
           can inflict enough damage quickly enough, that Ozma doesn't cast
           Curaga on himself, and that he especially doesn't cast Meteor a
           second time. (By the way, you can also reduce the likelyhood of
           Meteor by not casting Reflect on Beatrix.) While Meteor is deadly,
           so is Flare Star, as the latter's power and frequency goes up the
           higher Beatrix's level is.

With lots of luck...
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Congratulations, you've completed the Beatrix Single Character Challenge!
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ii - Normal Character Game + Beatrix
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This section is important for all those playing a normal game, making use of
three other characters in battle along with Beatrix. As I've mentioned in
Chapter Six, i, replacing an avatar or any normally unswitchable character is
the optimal choice for bypassing problems in story progression. This is not
really a problem until Disc Three. So if you want to have a party with Beatrix
and Zidane at the same time, this is what you need to know.

    DALI
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Do not bring Beatrix here in place of Zidane or Garnet, EVER. Anyone else, like
(Steiner/Vivi) is okay. You see, going to Dali's inn without Zidane/Garnet,
confuses some in-game flags and causes some freezing graphic glitches when the
story events get triggered, since the avatars get changed while inside the inn.
More importantly, if you do go in under these conditions, DO NOT SAVE AT THE
MOOGLE, or else you risk corruption. This applies to all discs.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    SOUTH GATE/NORTH STATION/TRENO AREA
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Immediately after defeating Black Waltz 3 again, before going anywhere else,
place Steiner in Slot 1 so that he is the only character you switch for
Beatrix. You do not want to be replacing Garnet at all during this event,
especially if you make a visit to Dali, because things could get glitchy. I
can't yet confirm if replacing Garnet in Disc 2 in the Treno area of this event
causes problems, so I'm listing it just as a precaution because I know that
Steiner is a safe alternative.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    DESERT PALACE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
When asked who to bring to Oeilvert, don't choose Beatrix. If you do, Kuja will
call out your party members' names, but because there isn't a room containing
an imprisoned Beatrix, the game will freeze.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    OEILVERT
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Here, you have no choice, you can only replace Zidane, anyone else and the game
will freeze when entering. And again, for the battle with Ark, it's Zidane or
no dice.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    MOUNT GULUG
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Either Zidane or Vivi must be replaced here if you want to have Beatrix. You've
no other choices because the game will hang at the boss' cutscene.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    IPSEN'S CASTLE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Unfortunately, if Zidane is not the one replaced, don't bring Beatrix to this
place at all because the game will freeze at the boss battle. If not, you'll
see a second stationary Amarant sprite standing behind the group when you'll
find the real Amarant in the chamber with the four mirrors. Then once the boss
appears, Beatrix's Amarant will not move, thus freezing the game.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    EARTH SHRINE
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Make a choice, either replace Zidane or replace Quina, it doesn't matter.
Everything will work fine regardless.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    PANDEMONIUM
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
For the battle with the Silver Dragon, if you want to use Zidane and Beatrix
together, Amarant must be in the active party. By doing so, the game will show
two Amarant sprites for the cutscene, and the one for Beatrix will imitate the
other if he is present. It's weird, but that is the trick to keeping the game
from freezing.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

    CRYSTAL WORLD
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
You can use Beatrix in the battle with Trance Kuja, but do not select Beatrix
for the battle with Necron. If you do, a character's life force will rise up,
and fall into oblivion, and the game will hang because Beatrix's body will be
nowhere in sight. Just choose 4 normal characters, and once you get to the main
menu, substitute Beatrix for one of them with a GS.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
iii - Miscellaneous Places That Concern Beatrix
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    THE BATTLE ARENA IN TRENO
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Here, whatever you do, do not select Beatrix's name for the battle(s) as the
game will freeze. Instead, select someone else, like Zidane. Then Beatrix will
somehow be present as well, fighting alongside him---two against one! If you
want to do this the honorable way, just have Zidane at low health, and when the
battle starts, kill him right off the bat, and duel it out with a lone Beatrix.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

This section consists of various points for possible updates with the help of
any users on GameFAQs. Credit will be given, obviously.

* First off, if anyone can come up with a good (reasonable) strategy for
  beating Grand Dragons with Beatrix (solo) on Disc One, please send it to me.
* I'm accepting Beatrix SCC strategies for Tiamat, Kraken, and Lich.
* If anyone has managed to beat Ozma with a lone Beatrix, feel free to let me
  know about it, and/or how you did it. I'm tempted to make a Hall of Fame
  section just for that.
