Then, It'll ask you "Want to read the story?" This is for if you don't want to read the storyline and just race. Click on "Yes". You'll then see the title "Chocobo Racing", then the title of the chapter. This happends everytime you play (except if you click on "No" on the question "Want to read the story?") **Chapter 1: Gadgets a go-go! Chocobo decided to go and visit his pal, Cid (he seems to appear in EVERY game doesn't he?). While he was there. Cid told Chocobo that he made him his best invention, The Jet-Blades CR! Cid also tells Chocobo that he made a racetrack for Chocobo to test them out. They both head outside, and while Cid's talking, Chocobo starts going! Track: Cid's Test Track - Developed by Cid, this modern racetrack was created to have test-runs on. With a simple layout, this high-speed circuit is a great place to brush up on your basic techniques. This is the shortest of all the courses. Difficulty Level - 1 out of 5 Players on Track: Chocobo Magic Stones on Course: None Chocobo finished his test-run, and Cid is amazed by the time he took. Then, the unexpected Mog shows up, asking Cid if he's finished with his racing machine. Mog wants to race Chocobo to try and change the title of the game to "Mog Racing"! But Cid forgot and tells him that it'll be ready tomorrow morning. The book closes, and Chapter 1 is finished. Gained Players: None **Chapter 2: Moogling Right Along! The next book opens, revealing Chapter 2. Mog head's to Cid's place. Asking for his Ultra-Deluxe maching. When he's shown the machine, he's not sure if it's the best Cid can do. Mog then decides to race Chocobo anyway, to try to change the title. Track: Moogle Forest - A peaceful course created within the Moogle's homeland. With smooth curves and few bumps, it's easy to reach your top speed. But remember that racing on the grassy areas will slow you down. Difficulty Level - 2 out of 5 Players on Track: Mog, Chocobo Magic Stones on Course: Haste, ? When Chocobo finishes the race, he then says it's not fair because he can go faster. Cid then says that he can go faster because of the piece of crystal attached to his foot. The crystal gives him the ability, Dash. Cid also says that when he was found, the crystal was already there. Mog askes why he's got it and Cid answers by saying "Well, why don't you go on an adventure to find that out?" They both go to their village, and Chapter 2 is finished. Gained Players: Mog **Chapter 3: A Life In Ruins! Chocobo and Mog say their good-bye's to their village and start heading off to the village gate. While there, a Golem appears and scares them! He says that he's a guardian and to go back to the village. Chocobo and Mog then discover that the Golem has a blue crystal just like Chocobo! He says that they can have the crystal, and continue on their adventure if they beat him in a race. They agree. Track: The Ancient Gate - This course is the ruins of the roads that once ran around the old village gate. There are many 90-degree turns that might make you bump into the walls that stand on either side of the course. Racing here is bound to drive you up the wall! Difficulty Level - 2 out of 5 Players on Track: Mog, Golem, Chocobo Magic Stones on Course: Fire, ?, Haste Once you beat the Golem, Mog ask's if they can have the blue crystal, but the only way they can get it, is to let him join the group. Mog doesn't want him to join but Chocobo convinces him by letting him be the so-called "Leader". They continue on their adventure with Golem, the book closes, and Chapter 3 is finished. Gained Players: Golem **Chapter 4: The Pleasure Is Mine! Chocobo, Mog and Golem arrive in an old, abandoned, Mythril Mine. Golem says that the only way to continue is by going through the mine, to the other side. After he says that, Mog is captured by Goblin and the Goblin asks for all their money. Golem and Chocobo notice that he's got an earring on his left ear that has a piece of the same blue crystal in it. The Goblin then challenges you to a race and the loser has to give up their blue crystals. They agree and start to race. Track: Mythril Mines - This make-shift racecource is formed from the cart tracks that used to carry the Mythril from the mines to the now- deserted mining town. The roads are winding and narrow, so be careful! Difficulty Level - 2 out of 5 Players on Track: Chocobo, Mog, Goblin, Golem Magic Stones on Track: Ice, ?, Fire, Haste Once you beat him, Mog reads a letter, and he finds out that the Goblin steals from the rich, and gives to the poor. Mog then ask's for the crystal earring, but says no and he joins you instead because of Mog finding out who he really is. They go through the mines, and Chapter 4 is finished. Gained Players: Goblin **Chapter 5: Mind Your Manor! The 4 arrive in a spooky forest, much like one in a horror movie. Goblin says that everyone who has come into this forest, has never come back out, alive. Mog starts to get scared, and they find a manor. They are all tired, so they decide to go inside. When they enter, they see a door open, and some glowing yellow eyes. Chocobo, Goblin, and Golem decide to investigate, while Mog stays behind. Only when they go inside however, Mog remembers that the 1st person left alone is always the one that get's killed! Mog rushes in after them, and they find an old racetrack. Track: The Black Manor - This is a course found within the confines of an old, ghastly mansion. Watch out not to fall into the blood-red pond near the goal line or you'll lose time! Difficulty Level - 3 out of 5 Players on Track: Black Mage, Chocobo, Mog, Goblin, Golem Magic Stones On Track: Bolt, Ice, ?, Fire, Haste When you beat everybody, they capture a Black Mage, who doesn't speak, but has a Blue crystal in his staff. Mog, again, doesn't want him to join but they take him along because of the blue crystal. They start to follow the Black Mage, the book closes and Chapter 5 is Finiahed. Gained Players: Black Mage Note: from this point on, I can't list the players on track because they are random. You now have more players than the maximum allowed on the track at the same time. **Chapter 6: Crystal Clear Your group gets very tired from all the travelling done so far, so the Black Mage leads you to "Mysidia", a town full of magicians. They go to find someone that will cast "Cure" on them. They meet up with a White Mage who notices that they all have blue crystals. She then shows them her blue crystal, except, hers is huge! She also tells them that she knows the legend about the crystals but to beat her in a race for her to tell you. Track: Floating Gardens - The Floating Gardens were built on an island in the clouds by the ancestors of Mysidia. Both speed and skillful steering are a must on this track. Difficulty Level - 3 out of 5 Magic Stones On Track: Bolt, Ice, ?, Fire, Haste, Mini After you win, the White Mage will teach you the legend. I want you to see this on your own. The White Mage decides to join you. Gained Players: White Mage **Chapter 7: Maybe It's Something I Ate? Your party arrives at probably the weirdest place in the entire game. It's a town of.....food. If you haven't noticed, this is the home of Fat Chocobo (duh). While Fat Chocobo was eating, he accidentally swallowed a blue crystal! The group makes a deal with him. If they beat him in a race, the can have his crystal (when he takes a dump, it'll come out) but if he wins, then he get's to......eat all of your group! Track: Gingerbread Land - This course is made up of donut arches and cake tunnels. Gingerbread Land is one of the longest courses. Difficulty Level - 4 out of 5 Magic Stones On Track: Bolt, Ice, ?, Fire, Haste, Mini, Reflect Once you win, Fat Chocobo joins you, and you continue on your adventure. Gained Players: Fat Chocobo **Chapter 8: Won't You Be My Lava?! Your group went through a cavern, only to find a desolate wasteland which they have never seen before. Fat Chocobo mentions that there should be a blue crystal in the Vulcan-O Valley. They then meet up with Behemoth, the most powerful monster known to man. He, too, has a blue crystal. And you'll have to earn it, by beating him in the race, right next to a Volcano! Track: Vulcan-O Valley - An exciting track created on the top of an active volcano, complete with fire and brimstone falling from the heavens. If you skid off the course, you'll fall headfirst into molten lava. Aggressive driving and unnecessary risks would be a mistake on this course! Difficulty Level - 4 out of 5 Magic Stones On Track: Bolt, Ice, ?, Fire, Haste, Mini, Reflect, Doom Once you win, since you've gathered all the crystals, they all begin to glow very brightly...... Gained Players: Behemoth **Chapter 9: Final Fantasia The crystals are all glowing, and Mog finds out that his bike had a crystal built inside it! Then you see a movie sequence of Fantasia opening up (Very cool movie!) You will meet up with Bahamut, the guardian of Fantasia. He wants you to face the "Final Trial". Track: Fantasia - A track found in the realm of the Espers. Drive fast, and you'll fall in a hole with dragons! Difficulty Level - 5 out of 5 Magic Stones On Track: ALL (Ultima, Bolt, Ice, ?, Fire, Haste, Mini, Reflect, Doom) When you win, well, I'm NOT GONNA TELL YOU! Congratulations! You have beaten Story Mode! Once the credits are over, you get to make your own character depending on how well you played during story mode. If you played well, you get a higher score and get to make your character a living God/dess. Enjoy! ************************************************************************ **D. The Various Modes** This section describes the various modes that you can choose from. Options - No players Displays the game's main options. For example: Controller setup, the Handicaps, view the game's movies........ Story Mode - 1 player This is what the game is all about. In every Squaresoft game, there seems to be a storyline in everything. Heck, they even make a storyline in Racing games! Time Attack - 1 player This option allows you to race by yourself against the timer. If you would happen to do really well on a course, you then have the option to make a phantom racer (memory card required), and if you made a new record, you have the option to save it (yet again, you need a memory card). GP Mode - 1 or 2 players This option allows you to race against the computer in 4 courses which you can either let the computer decide or you can decide. This mode is a lot like the Mario Kart GP race. You get points, and the one with the most points wins. If you do good on all the courses, you'll get a surprise! VS Mode - 1 or 2 players This mode lets you play either against a computer or a friend. Pretty simple. Pick someone, race, whoever comes in 1st, wins. Rally Mode - 1 or 2 players This mode is kind of the same as VS mode, but you get to pick 3 people. After a certain amount of laps, the next character you picked goes..... and sooner or later, your 3rd character goes and will be the last character before the win. Memory Card - No players This mode (well, not really a mode) allows you to save what you've done in the game so far. This option also allows you to Load where you last were in the game. (Ex. Secret Characters, Secret Courses.....) ************************************************************************ **E. Cast Of Characters** Chocobo - The laid-back hero of this game. Everyone's favorite feathered friend! Always faithful and fearless. Nothing ruffles this bird's feathers! Mog - A greedy forest-dweller with an attitude. This little guy is always trying to take the spotlight away from Chocobo. Being the sly Moogle that he is, he always has some sneaky scheme up his sleeve. Golem - A giant rock statue brought to life by the power of magic. Golem stands as the gatekeeper of the ancient ruins that were once the village walls. Goblin - Steals from the rich and gives to the poor. A master thief who hides out in the Mythril Mines. What is his true identity? Black Magician - The silent master of Black Magic. The owner of the Black Manor hidden deep within the Cursed Forest. White Mage - A young girl from Mysidia, the village of magic users. A kind-hearted user of White Mage, and one of the few people who knows the Legend of the Crystals. Chubby Chocobo - The great white Chocobo who eats anything! The "heavy- weight" champion of this game. It sounds like he ate something he shouldn't have.... Behemoth - The most powerful beast known to man! Behemoth is an enormous "Esper", who lurks in the Vulcan-O Valley. What could his mission be? ************************************************************************ **F. Difficulty Level - 6 out of 5! ************************************************************************ **G. Magic Stones And their Effects** NOTE: There are many different Magic Stones found on the tracks that you can pick up and use to attack others or defend yourself with. You can only hold up to 3 stones at a time, and some of the stones POWER-UP when you collect 2 or 3 of the same type in a row. Rivals can steal your Magic Stones by bumping into you from behind, so be careful! Fire - A small fireball that you have to aim at your rival to hit them. Fira - A larger fireball that will automatically aim at a rival in front of you. Firaga - A great fireball that hits all rivals on the course. Can only dodge with either "Barrier" ability or by having a "Reflect" stone. Thunder - Hurls 1 lightning bolt at the rival ahead. Easy to dodge. Thundara - Hurls 3 lightning bolts at the rival ahead. Harder to dodge. Thundaga - Hits all opponents with 3 lightening bolts. Can only dodge with either "Barrier" ability or by having a "Reflect" stone. Blizzard - Plants 1 puddle of ice on the racetrack. Easy to dodge. Blizzara - Scatters lots of ice on the track. Harder to dodge. Blizzaga - Freeze all opponents in a ring, twirls them, then makes them crash for a long time. Can only dodge with either "Barrier" ability or by having a "Reflect" stone. Mini 1 - Makes opponent ahead of you 25% smaller. Mini 2 - Makes opponent ahead of you 50% smaller. Mini 3 - Makes opponent ahead of you 75% smaller. You can also squish him/her. Can only dodge with either "Barrier" ability or by having a "Reflect" stone. Doom - Makes opponent have 10 seconds untill he/she blows up. You can prevent this however, by passing the "curse" to someone else by touching them. Can only dodge with either "Barrier" ability or by having a "Reflect" stone. Reflect - Bounces opponents magical effects. It's used automatically when the opponent tries to use magic on you. ? - It could be any magic stone found on the course. Haste 1 - Boost for 2 seconds Haste 2 - Boost for 5 seconds Haste 3 - Boost for 10 seconds Ultima 1 - Hits all opponents for small damage. Can't Dodge. Ultima 2 - Hits all opponents and makes them crash for a small time. Ultima 3 - The best magic in the game. Hits all opponents and makes them crash for a very long time. Can only dodge with either "Barrier" ability or by having a "Reflect" stone. ************************************************************************ **H. Abilities** NOTE: Abilities are special effects that a racer can equip to strengthen a certain attribute or Magic Stones' effects. You can only use it when your ability gauge is at it's max. Some abilities are used automatically when the bar is full. Dash - Allows you to travel faster for a short time. Same as Haste 2. Pretty good ability. Flap - Makes you fly in the air to dodge ice. I've NEVER used this once. Grip-Up - Increases your traction to improve turning for a short time. This ability is good if you're using Golem. Otherwise, it's a waste. Mug - Steals a magic stone from a rival and gives it to you. Good....for a while. Magic Plus - Increases your magic stone by 1 level. Used automatically. I use this ability the most. Barrier - Defends you from magic stones. Same as reflect. Used automatically. REALLY good! Receive - If you're hit by magic, you'll get the stone that was used on you. Used automatically. This ability is pretty good. Charge - Ram your rivals and make them spin out. Rivals can easily dodge this. Mega Flare - Hits all opponents. Same as Ultima 3. Charges very slowly. Can't dodge with anything. Very effective. Gunblade - Speeds you up untill you're in 1st place. When the person with Gunblade comes close to you, the sword will slash at you and will spin out. Gunblade stops when you're hit by magic. Not so great. ************************************************************************ **I. Secret Characters** Bahamut - Beat story mode for the 1st time. The Secret About Grand Prix Mode (Contains Spoilers!)** When you play Grand Prix, you'll think that there's no point in playing it because you'll think it's the exact same thing as VS mode but you choose 4 courses right? You'll also think that this game is too easy because you keep coming in 1st on everything because your opponents are too slow right? But there's a little trick you might not know! Here it is: Play Story Mode and finish it 2 times. After you beat it 2 times in a row, you should get Fantasia and FF VIII Circuit along with Bahamut and Squall. Start Playing Grand Prix and pick any character you want. Everytime you finish 1st (with any character), you'll receive a "crown". You can see the crown on the left of the screen on the course you came 1st in. Finish 1st on All the tracks. When you do, go back into Grand Prix mode. Pick your next 4 courses. VOILA! You now have a new class which is called "Behemoth Class"! This makes the game a bit harder. But wait! Isn't there space for yet ANOTHER class? Finish 1st on all the tracks with Behemoth Class and you'll get "Bahamut Class"! Now that you think that all the spaces have been filled, you'll start thinking, "Now what's the point of doing Bahamut Class? There's no space for anymore secrets!" WRONG!!!!! Finish 1st on all the track yet again. But beware! The guy's you're facing are REALLY tough! I suggest you master using the sharp turn before you take this on. Otherwise, It'll just get you frustrated. Once you've finished 1st on all the classes including Bahamut Class. You'll start thinking that what you just did was a waste of time. Well, what you just did wasn't a waste of time! Go to the options menu. You now have the option to use "Mirror Mode"! This makes all the tracks BACKWARDS! It also increases the game's difficulty yet AGAIN! Enjoy trying to face them NOW! By the way, Mirror Mode works on all options EXCLUDING Story Mode. If you don't want mirror mode on, go to the options menu and you have the option to turn it off. ************************************************************************ **K. Lyrics To "Diamonds In My Heart" (Thanks Ed!)** I received an email from Ed the Moogle saying that he had the lyrics to the song. Here's the email: "The song is at the end of story mode, right after Cid talks about the airplane, a movie will start up, DON'T PRESS START or you'll skip it. I read in the credits it's name and it's composer." And here's the song: Diamonds in my heart by Vicki Bell Do you remember the days When we had long long ways to go And you were there for me, As I was there for you to be around The sun was shining brightly Down on us so gently That we thought we could go on Or was (She goes into a supernaturally high pitch right here) Hand in hand, forever and almorn We would run, we'd never have enough Did an angel know when it was time to live Or time to sleep On and on, the hours tick away So the memories can go astray Oh, how I miss the days of golden sun And please, I'd rather be with you I still remember the days When we had long long time to share Until I saw you there Not as tired as I used to feel Hello I said unsurly You smiled a little shyly Soon we knew we would go on Together on a journey to our dreams Hand and hand, forever and almorn We'd run, didn't even care to ask How far away from home We'd have to go On and on, the hours tick away Oh the memories go astray Oh I miss the never-ending road, And sure, I'd rather be with you Sweet summer breeze Or autumn leaves Through winter skys And flowers of spring Friends and their laughter Precious and kind Let them shine like diamonds in my heart All along, I'm here to find the way To what dreams, we used to have before, And I hope to see again Your smiling face along the way somewhere If you hear me calling out today And you see the meaning of it all Come and join me on this way again You know, tomorrow will be there... Thanks again, Ed The Moogle! ************************************************************************ **L. What's In The Next Update** Well, I don't think I need to update this anymore. I'm pretty much done my first walkthrough, and I think it was a big success! I think I'll do another walkthrough on another game. Maybe either Earthbound or Earthbound Zero.... ************************************************************************ **M. Thanks** I'm guessing you already know what this section is for. It's to say thanks to the people who helped me or gave me info on the game and in the walkthrough. -Ed The Moogle, who supplied me with the song lyrics. -All the people who emailed me about the walkthrough. -CJayC for making a great site. -Square for making this great game. -Sony for making a system that kicks ass. ************************************************************************ This FAQ/Walkthrough is Copyright 1999 Greg Elian
