The henchmen you can hire in Neverwinter Nights are, well, interesting, as well as being quite helpful. They also have their own stories to tell, which is why I decided I'd like to do this. (Plus I'm obsessed.) This is an old FAQ I created, but it was just lying in my hard drive, so... there. XD Any suggestions on what to add, or corrections and other such messages, are to be directed to me at blades@seasonalplume.net, with "NWN Henchmen FAQ" in the subject field please. . What's next: Better evaluations, hopefully. Their stories verbatim. . Do NOT post this *anywhere* without my permission. As of this version, only GameFAQs has the authority to post this. . This document Copyright (c) 2003 by Angela Sabas. ----------------------- II. VERSION INFORMATION ----------------------- VERSION ONE First version of the FAQ, completed 100202. Stats complete as of in-game information, but evaluation not yet in-depth for most henchmen. Only Chapter I quests are here as of the moment, complete with where to find the items. ------------- III. HENCHMEN ------------- These are various stats and (with some at least) a hopefully-useful short evaluation of the henchman. Stats listed are before they lecel up, as you will find/hire them initially, and without enhancement (henchmen gain various increases during the game). The recommended combat setting is the first type listed (i.e., Melee or Ranged) and is the "default" setting they are on, and if you choose to switch to the other, only the changes are listed afterwards. Boddyknock's Tale Need Leaven Bread Recipe Found Beggar's Nest: House Siril the Baker's body Reward 100 XP Lantanese Ring +1 Enhancement Bonus: Charisma +1 Regeneration +1 Details: Unbelievably weak, is what I would say right off the bat. Even with 18 Constitution he only has 28 HP, and as for feats -- they aren't especially off the charts. I have yet to see him summon a familiar, which is (for me) the only really useful feat he has as a henchman. The hencman mod (http://snow.prohosting.com/wperpo) apparently corrects this, though I have yet to see it (I don't play Boddyknock) -- they say quite obviously though, that the familiar he summons is "somewhat useless". As for spells, he has Daze and Sleep -- hopefully it will get better higher up. He MUST be on Ranged, since two of his spells are Melf's Acid Arrow and Magic Missile. Tale: Boddyknock is from Lantan, where he studied under a magician as an apprentice. He was struck with the man's disorganized house, and while his master was out, he went and organized the laboratory. His presence in Neverwinter is brought about by his wish to find a cure for the plague but also because he was looking for a Leaven Bread recipe to take back to Lantan. 2. DAELAN RED TIGER ------------------- Found City Core: Trade of Blades Race Half-Orc Class Barbarian Alignment Rebel Chaotic (100) Good (50) Hit Points (HP) 56 STR 19 DEX 14 FORT 6 SRES 0 CON 14 INT 10 RFLX 3 ASF 20% WIS 10 CHA 7 WILL 1 ACP -1 Melee stats: Armor Class (AC) 16 Main Weapon Double Axe +1 Attack Bonus +9 Damage 1-8 +4 (Critical: 20 / x3) +1 Physical Damage Offhand Weapon Not Applicable Effects Attack Increased Damage Increased AC Increased Spell Immunity Ranged stats: Main Weapon Daelan's Longbow +1 Attack Bonus +7 Damage 1-8 +3 (Critical: 20 / x3) Effects Attack Increased AC Increased Spell Immunity Skills: Concentration 2 Discipline 11 Heal 0 Hide 1 Listen 7 Lore 0 Move Silently 1 Parry 7 Persuade -2 Search 1 Spot 3 Taunt -2 Feats Armor Proficiency (light) Armor Proficiency (medium) Barbarian Rage (2x per day) Dodge Power Attack Two-Weapon Fighting Uncanny Dodge I Weapon Proficiency (exotic) Weapon Proficency (martial) Quest: . Daelan's Tale Need Brooch Found Docks On a ship guarded by three Bloodsailors Reward 100 XP Amulet of the Red Tiger Tribe +1 Enhancement Bonus: Strength +1 Immunity: Fear Details: Daelan Red Tiger of the Uthgardt tribe is what I'd call "brute force". He is a very good melee fighter as his Strength is an impressive 17 plus his racial modifier, bringing it to a 19. He also has the most HP of the henchmen. However, he does seem to lack a bit on the feats arena, which is important -- but the ones he DOES have are exactly what a barbarian like him would expect -- brute force. Fighting-wise, he'd rank second to Grimgnaw. A good investment in this case is Pausanias' henchman mod (http://snow.prohosting.com/wperpo), because Daelan's Two-Weapon Fighting feat is sadly unused originally and the henchman mod tries to solve this. Daelan is a very good melee fighter, well-rounded enough (and not creepy Ü). He is balanced, which makes him a good basic henchman, easy enough to manage. However, if you're looking for sheer melee prowess, and aren't averse to having someone creepy on your side, Grimgnaw is better in this arena. Tale: Daelan was of the Uthgardt tribe, but every since his mother had died, he was sent away from his tribe mostly because of lack of tribe resources and his being a half-orc. He worked in the Docks for a time, and would have gone and gained recognition on the High Seas when he realized that it was not a life for him, preferring to stay on land and fighting with honor. He is looking for his mother's brooch. 3. GRIMGNAW ----------- Found City Core: Trade of Blades Race Dwarf Class Monk Alignment Dominator Lawful (100) Evil (0) Hit Points (HP) 40 STR 16 DEX 16 FORT 9 SRES 0 CON 20 INT 10 RFLX 7 ASF 0% WIS 17 CHA 4 WILL 7 ACP 0 Stats: Armor Class (AC) 20 Main Weapon Unarmed Attack Bonus +8 Damage 1-8 +3 (Critical: 20 / x2) Offhand Weapon Not Applicable Effects AC Increased Skill Decreased Attack Increased Damage Increased Wisdom Increased Spell Immunity Skills: Concentration 5 Discipline 3 Heal 3 Hide 10 Listen 9 Lore 2 Move Silently 10 Parry 10 Persuade -3 Search 0 Spot 3 Taunt -3 Feats Armor Proficiency (light) Armor Proficiency (medium) Battle Training vs Giants Battle Training vs Goblins Battle Training vs Orcs Dark Vision Deflect Arrows Dodge Evasion Flurry of Blows Hardiness vs. Poisons Hardiness vs. Spells Improved Unarmed Strike Mobility Monk AC Bonus Monk Speed Power Attack Shield Proficiency Skill Affinity (Lore) Still Mind Stonecunning Stunning Fist Weapon Proficiency (monk) Quest: . Grimgnaw's Tale Need Silver Ring Found No-Man's-Land: House Chest Reward 100 XP Amulet of the Long Death +1 Enhancement Bonus: Constitution +1 Spell Resistance: 10 Details: THE best melee henchman you can get if you're looking for someone to fight with/for you. Even if you're on melee yourself, he's a gem to have around, as he kicks major butt, especially with Stunning Fist around. His stats are overwhelming, and his feats are perfect, as he is a monk: Flurry of Blows, Improved Unarmed Strike, Mobility, Monk AC Bonus, Monk Speed, and Power Attack all give to a quick fight, plus Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Evasion and Hardiness vs Poisons and Spells keep him alive pretty long enough. Bad thing: his Charisma is already six, further lessened since he is a dwarf. So yes, he is uber-creepy; but it seems like a small thing to give up, after all, he's still um-believeable. ^_^ Tale: Grimgnaw once served Bruenor Battlehammer in Mithral Hall, but his love for death soon made his comrades shun him even though he was very skilled in battle. He encountered the Order of the Long Death and trained hard with them, alongside another one named Alaganda (?). The day before the true test of their vows, where it is possible that the Silent Lord will take them for his own, Alaganda fled, breaking the vows they all took to be faithful to the Silent Lord. Since Grimgnaw was that only survivor for their batch, he was given the task to find and kill Alaganda, which led him to Neverwinter. To show proof that she was dead, he was to bring back a silver ring with her family's crest on it: a falcon. 4. LINU LA'NERAL ---------------- Found City Core: Trade of Blades Race Elf Class Cleric Alignment Benefactor Neutral (50) Good (100) Hit Points (HP) 36 STR 16 DEX 12 FORT 5 SRES 0 CON 13 INT 10 RFLX 2 ASF 55% WIS 16 CHA 12 WILL 7 ACP -9 Melee stats: Armor Class (AC) 19 Main Weapon Mace +1 Attack Bonus +7 Damage 1-6 +3 (Critical: 20 / x2) Offhand Weapon Not Applicable Effects Constitution Increased Attack Increased Damage Increased Spell Immunity Ranged stats: Armor Class (AC) 17 Main Weapon Linu's Crossbow +1 Attack Bonus +5 Damage 1-8 (Critical: 19-20 / x2) Effects Constitution Increased Attack Increased Spell Immunity Skills: Concentration 7 Discipline 6 Heal 3 Hide -6 Listen 8 Lore 0 Move Silently -6 Parry -6 Persuade 1 Search 2 Spot 7 Taunt 1 Feats Alertness Armor Proficiency (heavy) Armor Proficiency (light) Armor Proficiency (medium) Cleave Hardiness vs. Enchantments Healing Domain Powers Immunity to Sleep Keen Sense Power Attack Shield Proficiency Skill Affinity (Listen) Skill Affinity (Search) Skill Affinity (Spot) Turn Undead Weapon Proficiency (elf) Weapon Proficiency (simple) Quest: . Linu's Tale Need Silver Chalice of Moonbow Found Blacklake: Meldanen's Sanctum Cabinet Reward 100 XP Pendant of the Elf +1 Special Properties: Darkvision Enhancement Bonus: Dexterity +1 Details: Linu, of the Sehanine Moonbow of Evereska, is clumsy yet cheerful and skilled. A skilled cleric, she's especially handy when you start out on Beggar's Nest, as the place is littered with undead and her Turn Undead skills certainly come in handy (not to mention her healing). She might cramp your style if you're on to stealth, though I haven't really felt this to be a downfall (I don't do stealth anyway). Tale: She was of the Sehanine Moonbow of Evereska, serving in the temple, when a cloaked man came begging for food. She let him in, went to get food, and when she came back, the man was gone as well as an important relic of the church (the chalice of Moonbow). The others weren't pleased at all, and she had a vision that she would go and search for the calice and come back with it. She followed her vision and ended up in the Trade of Blades. 5. SHARWYN ---------- Found City Core: Trade of Blades Race Human Class Bard Alignment Reconciler True Neutral Neutral (50) Neutral (50) Hit Points (HP) 32 STR 18 DEX 15 FORT 2 SRES 0 CON 12 INT 10 RFLX 6 ASF 10% WIS 10 CHA 16 WILL 4 ACP 0 Ranged stats: Armor Class (AC) 14 Main Weapon Sharwyn's Shortbow +1 Attack Bonus +6 Damage 1-6 +3 (Critical: 20 / x3) Offhand Weapon Not Applicable Effects Attack Increased Strength Increased Spell Immunity Melee stats: Main Weapon Two-Bladed Sword +1 Attack Bonus +8 Damage 1-8 +4 (Critical: 19-20 / x2) +1 Slashing Damage Effects Attack Increased Strength Increased Damage Increased Spell Immunity Skills: Concentration 8 Discipline 12 Heal 0 Hide 9 Listen 2 Lore 4 Move Silently 9 Open Lock 9 Parry 2 Perform 10 Persuade 3 Search 0 Spot 2 Taunt 3 Feats Alertness Armor Proficiency (light) Armor Proficiency (medium) Bard Song (1x per day) Bardic Knowledge Combat Casting Disarm Quick to Master Shield Proficiency Toughness Two-Weapon Fighting Weapon Proficiency (exotic) Weapon Proficiency (martial) Weapon Proficiency (simple) Quest: . Sharwyn's Tale Need Celestial Elixir Found Peninsula: Tanglebrook Estate Alchemist's Apparatus (back room) Reward 100 XP Belt of the Performer +1 Enhancement Bonus: Charisma +1 Skill Bonus: Perform +1 Skill Bonus: Persuade +1 Details: Sharwyn is a local girl with an attitude, having come from a wealthy family. Some say that the bard is the weakest of all classes, but I think she makes a pretty good henchman as she can boost your stats with Bard Song, cast a number of spells, plus she has a nice array of combat feats: Combat Casting, Disarm, Two-Weapon Fighting, and Weapon Proficiencies in Exotic, Martial, and Simple weapons when you first hire her. I would suggest that she be put on ranged, as she's not very strong, but she has higher combat stats when on Melee -- plus, she does have Combat Casting and, if she chooses to cast a spell, won't engage enemies in combat (she stays out of the way; your only problem would be if the enemies choose to fight her). Once again, a good investment in this case is Pausanias' henchman mod (http://snow.prohosting.com/wperpo), because really, Sharwyn's Two-Weapon Fighting feat is sadly unused and the henchman mod tries to solve this. Tale: Her mother, wanting to be rich, married a wealthy man, therefore ensuring that they lived in wealth. However, her mother continued to spend and spend her husband's money, and, when he died, they were sunk in debts. She persuaded her daughter to seduce a wealthy man, one Lord Farthington, in order to marry him, and Sharwyn planned to do so -- unfortunately, she ended up seducing the wrong man, a penniless apprentice bard, Dannen, who served Lord Farthington and was at the same party as Farthington. She fell in love with Dannen. Unwilling to let go of her lover and her duty to her mother, she decided to keep her lover in secret and seduce Farthington at the same time. Her mother found out, however, and so did Farthington, and Dannen and Sharwyn ended up running away to keep themselves alive (Farthington wanted to execute them). She visited her mother again, found out that Farthington's wealth had been depleted and he had succombed to the plague. Her mother also suffered from bonerot, which could only be cured by a special elixir made from a flower on Mount Celestia. 6. Tomi's Tale Need Official Document Found Beggar's Nest: Thomas' Wheelwright Bookcase Reward 100 XP Ring of the Rogue +1 Enhancement Skill Bonus: Dexterity +1 Skill Bonus: Disable Trap +1 Skill Bonus: Open Lock +1 Details: Tomi is the first henchman you'll come across and, probably, hire -- and he is a very good basic henchman. If you're not a Rouge, you will undoubtedly need his Open Lock, Search, and Disable Trap skills. He is very balanced, and his Sneak Attacks are definitely a plus, and his HP isn't too shabby. He is best as a companion in the best sense of the word, putting in sneak attacks as you engage the attacker. Don't put him on ranged, as his Weapon Finesse feat becomes useless if he doesn't use his Kukri +1. Once again, Pausanias' henchman mod (http://snow.prohosting.com/wperpo) provides solutions for the Two-Weapon Fighting feat to be used. The reward for his quest completed is also very nice, as you will be able to open most locks and disable most traps afterwards as long as you have the Ring of the Rogue +1 equipped, that is. Tale: Before coming to Neverwinter, he lived in Calimport (?) as a hired Rouge in the service of a medusa. She sent him to kill a certain vizier, which he did go to accordingly. However, while he was undercover as a cook, he fell in love with the vizier's daughter, which made him delay the job indefinitely as he didn't want to hurt her. Angered, the medusa went after him at about the same time the vizier was tipped off about his new cook. The vizier caught him naked with his daughter in the stables (?) and he ran off, the vizier in hot pursuit. The medusa also took up the chase. Finally, on a cliff (dead end), they both caught up with him, but proceeded to play tug of way as to who will end up punishing him. The medusa lowered her viel to turn the vizier into stone at the same time that the vizier launched his spell at her. They fell over the cliff right into the marketplace -- the medusa dead and the vizier smashed into pieces (as he was turned into stone). The townspeople all thought it was Tomi's doing. ------------------------------------ IV. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) ------------------------------------ Q: Can I play NWN without a henchman? A: Yes. It might be too difficult, but it is possible. All up to you. More experience to you, too. Q: Can I have more than one henchman? A: Yes, but only one at a time; you can hire them ALL (which is what I did, actually) but you can only bring one WITH you at a time. The previous one will wait where you left him/her and if you need him/her again, just go back and talk to him/her to join you again. I do not yet know if there are drawbacks to this strategy in the long run. Q: Who should I hire? A: It all depends on what race/class you are, on your strengths and weaknesses, and what you want out of the game. If you're more on combat, hire a supportive character, such as Sharwyn, Boddyknock, Tomi, or Linu. If you're more on healing, spells, and the like, you're better off with Daelan and Grimgnaw (Tomi and Linu are also pretty balanced enough, I think). Combat-wise, Grimgnaw takes the lead; support-wise, I think Linu or Sharwyn (Boddyknock is very weak, but hey, he's still a spellcaster) can cut it. If you're a beginner, I think Tomi is good to start with; his very skilled at opening locks and disabling traps. Q: How do you upgrade the items the henchmen give you? A: You finish their quests in the next chapter. --------- V. TABLES --------- These are tables to give you a better comparison between each henchman. 1.
