For Jill of the Jungle. One hell of a game, I might add. Nostalgia forced me to pick this game up again, and the lack of an existing FAQ led me to create one. Despite how many levels it has, JotJ can take about an hour to finish. Or a few days if it's your first time. This walkthrough is not just for explaining the way through and giving hints for the tough parts, but also for assessing points, something which is quite finite in this game. ------------------------------------------------ My Intro [JJPLINTRO] ------------------------------------------------ Jill of the Jungle, aside from being a whole lot of fan service, is an odd platformer from Epic during the time when they boasted a staff of over 20, count em, 20 people! WOAH!! Non-commercial releases couldn't help but take shots at the Shareware giant, Keen. In comparison, Jill is a clumsy, less versatile version, but that didn't keep the game from being fun, although the puzzles didn't help. ------------------------------------------------ Story [JJSTORY] ------------------------------------------------ Sadly, there is no backstory to Jill of the Jungle. Your goal is to merely help her conquer it. But that doesn't stop you from using your imagination. Perhaps she's after the jerk who's wasting all the apples. Or maybe she's escape the hordes of men who pursue her supermodel likeness. Jill stands 2 tiles high, and can vertically position herself either parallel with tiles, or half-way between 2. Nothing in between. Need I remind you this game was made in 1993? =============================================================================== JUMPING [JJBJUMPING] =============================================================================== Initially, Jill can only jump about 3 and 2/3 tiles high, allowing her to reach heights no greater than 3 tiles above hers, with the extra height allowing for reaching vines/chains that hang up to 6 tiles over the ground. Jill can collect a jumping powerup that increases her reach by # tiles with each one collected. Oddly enough, she can only jump at her current "maximum," rendering short hops impossible. The only thing that will stop her is if she bangs her head on something overhead. When distance jumping from ledges, a running start has no effect on how far she can reach. If anything, running will make you less likely to jump from the very edge, therefore covering less distance. Always walk up to an edge and simply jump with the direction key held down when covering large gaps. =============================================================================== CLIMBING [JJBCLIMBING] =============================================================================== When off the ground, Jill will automatically cling onto any vine or chain that sh-HEY! WHAT ARE YOU STARING AT!? YES, WE GET IT! SHE'S WEARING A LEGLESS LEOTARD AND CLIMBS IN A WAY THAT REALLY SHOWS IT OFF!! FOCUS!!! Anyway, press up or down to climb or descend. By pressing left or right, Jill will automatically jump from her vine/chain in that direction. Should she touch another during that jump, she will automatically cling to it, allowing for fast and easy "swinging." By merely taping on a direction key, Jill can jump a mere-half tile, allowing her to stand at the base, or to quickly fall down between to parallel vines or chains. =============================================================================== COMBAT [JJBCOMBAT] =============================================================================== Jill starts every level completely unarmed, rendering her helpless until she comes across one of either 2 weapons, a knife or a spinning blade. No level has both types. Launch a weapon with the ALT key. Knife: When launching a knife, it will fly from Jill 2 tiles above the ground, and eventually boomerang its way back. This is a pain when dealing with enemies who are no greater 1 tile high, and aren't on raised ground. To hit low enemies, you must launch the knife while jumping, so that the downward momentum of returning to Jill makes it dip downward. Mastering this ability is hard, but essential to getting all points in certain levels. A knife only lasts in the air for about 5 seconds. If it does not return to Jill in that time, it will fall to the ground for her to pick up. Sometimes, launching a knife into a wall will kill its air time instantly. Spinning Blade: Like the knife, the spinning blade also leaves Jill from 2 tiles above the ground. However, it is launched in a downward direction, bouncing unpredictably. When it returns to Jill, runs out of steam, or hits certain types of enemies, it will instantly return to Jill's inventory to use again. About the only enemy this isn't superior to the knife against is the phoenix, and only in certain situations. Aside from combat, the spinning blade is also used to destroy special grey brick tiles. =============================================================================== ENEMIES [JJBENEMIES] =============================================================================== The jungle has almost A WHOLE DOZEN creatures, ready to rip Jill to shreds. Phoenix: Also called the flaming bird, the phoenix flies in a straight line until it hits something solid, then goes the other direction. Contact with Jill will cause it to explode, hurting Jill and eliminating the chance to collect points for killing it normally. Frog: These little guys jump about 2 and 2/3 tiles high and toward Jill. Being low to the ground and hopping about makes them hard to hit with a knife, but getting them to land on a raised area, or luring them to a 3-tile high wall makes them easy pickings. Beehive: The beehive itself is harmless, but it eventually spawns small swarms of bees (go figure) ready to temporarily pursue Jill until they disperse. To stop the spawning, take out that hive! Giant Ant: These monsters stand 1 tile high and 2 tiles long and patrol whatever surface they stand on. They're fairly easy to take out, however, but when mixed with frogs & beehives in the vicinity, they provide a nasty distraction. Jellyfish: Bound to water, they move FAST! One solid hit from anything is enough to deal with them, however. Evil Fish: I'd say that name suits them. Unlike the jellyfish, they tend to move in more horizontal directions, and tend to seek Jill out. Giant Slug: Standing 2 tiles tall, these things almost seem menacing. Of course, they're slow as they patrol their floor. Crab: Oddly enough, these little guys are the most mobile enemies. They move about the ground as they please, and can climb chains and vines. Pac-Man Ghost: Don't ask me how there wasn't a lawsuit over these guys. They travel a predetermined path, and are invulnerable to everything except for Phoenix Flames. Snake: The snake starts out 4 tiles long, and requires 5 hits to kill. With each blow, its length decreases by half a tile, making it 2 tiles long prior to death. Gator: 3 tiles long and low to the ground. Luckily, they're always on a raised surface in levels that don't employ spinning blades. =============================================================================== HAZARDS [JJBHAZARDS] =============================================================================== Not all things that can kill Jill are malicious, they just punish her for foolishly walking into them. Knights: When they're crouched and hold their axe outward, passing by them will slice Jill in half. Luckily, their position can be changed by switch. Vine Patrols: These little things travel up and down vines and chains. If Jill comes in contact with them, she'll take damage and be pushed off. Water: Jill can walk through waterfalls easily, but cannot touch a water surface. Same applies to lava or any other variations. Spikes: Jill is about as immune to spikes as Mega Man is. In other words, contact = death. Stalactites: How close you need to be before they fall varies, but you take damage if they hit Jill. Approach slowly to avoid getting hurt. Torch: Giving off flames at regular intervals, these hazards cause the greatest non-lethal damage. Rolling Ball: These things... roll... and hurt. =============================================================================== GATES, DOORS, ITEMS, ETC [JJBITEMS] =============================================================================== There is more to the Jungle than just mere traps and monsters. Believe it or not, there's actually things there to help Jill. Keygems & Gates: A bright purple shining gem is required to open games that resemble grey squares with a blue slot in them. Gems left over after completing a level are carried into the Jungle Map. Keys & Doors: to open a 2 tile-high blockade with a keyhole on it, you must find a bright red pulsing key that shouts "YEAH!!" when you collect it. Switches: Switches can open barriers, activate bridges, or change knight positions. To toggle a switch press Up or Down while in front of it. Elevators: They look like metal tubes with an arrow sign. Just stand on one and press up or down to change your altitude. Some elevators reset their position when you step off of them Apples: Apparently, someone took a single bite out of every apple in the jungle and suspended them mid-air, while spinning. There are two kinds of apples: *Regular Apples: These restore some of Jill's health and award points. *Message Apples: These give you a message when you collect them. Many message apples in the Jungle Map were replaced with Regular Apples when the game was released commercially. Some give useless advice, like to save, while others give you good control hints, all while playing an AWESOME RIFF! Jumping Arrow: A large arrow pointing up. Grabbing one will increase your jumping ability by 2 tiles. Grabbing 3 will increase it by 9. Oddly enough, you cannot collect just 2 in Jill of the Jungle. Knife: Adds to your knife inventory. The more you have, the more you can launch out at a single time. Spinning Blade: Allows Jill to launch a spinning blade. Jill never gets an opportunity to carry more than one in this game. Flags: These aren't a collectable item, but touching them once awards points. Epic Logo: Because Epic Megagames was so self-important, they decided that they'd make their name the largest source in the points. =============================================================================== TRANSFORMATIONS [JJBTRANS] =============================================================================== Touching a Creature Symbol allows Jill to take on another form. Touching a Jill Symbol allows her to revert to her original self. In Jill of the Jungle, we have the following 3 forms: Phoenix: Pressing Shift will flap your wings, while pressing alt will flap and shoot flames. THANK GOD normal Phoenixes can't do this. You can control the direction of the flame slightly with your arrow keys. Be careful not to touch water. Even a waterfall will kill Jill in this form. Frog: Frogs bounce a little over 2 tiles high... constantly. Hitting either action key will cause you to jump about 5 and 2/3 tiles high, getting height, normal Jill cannot. Fish: In this form, Jill can travel through water. The Shift key is useless, as pushing the up direction is far faster, and Alt shoots odd eyeball things that can kill only Evil Fish or Jellyfish. =============================================================================== HEALTH [JJBHEALTH] =============================================================================== Jill starts every level with 6 units of health. Collecting regular apples restores lost health and raises it to a maximum of eight. Contact with any enemy or non-lethal hazard reduces Jill's health by one, except for torch flames, which reduce her health by 2. Jill has infinite lives, however, allowing you to retry a level as many times as you please. =============================================================================== POINTS [JJBPOINTS] =============================================================================== There are two ways of collecting points: Killing enemies and collecting certain objects. Listed below are each source and their point value. Enemies not listed do not yield points upon their destruction. Phoenix: 4 points Frog: 15 points Beehive: 11 points Giant Ant: 6 points Evil Fish: 7 points Giant Slug: 5 points Crab: 2 points Snake: 35 points Gator: 3 points Keygem: 23 points Regular Apples: 12 points Flag: 6 points Epic Logo: 25 x 11 = 275 points Epic Logos yield 25 points for each moment you touch them, until they cough up 275 points, after which, they explode. ------------------------------------------------ Walkthrough [JJWALKTHROUGH] ------------------------------------------------ =============================================================================== JUNGLE MAP [JJWMAP1] =============================================================================== Jill starts out falling into a canyon, with a gate blocking her way to the right. Collect the Keygem, pass through the gate, and enter Level 1. =============================== Map1 Points [JJWMAP1P] =============================== 1xKeygem(23) = 23 Total = 23 points =============================================================================== LEVEL 1 [JJWLEVEL1] =============================================================================== Jill Bounds Through the Boulders Start out by collecting the Knife to your right and continue right and take out 2 Phoenixes and a Gator. Then turn left and jump from the floating blocks to collect 7 Regular Apples and a Message Apple. At the end of the chain of floating blocks will be your first Epic Logo. Jump at it, turning back toward the block you jumped from at the peak of your jump so that you land and jump at it again to finish it off. Proceed back to where you killed that Gator, dropping down where taking higher ground will lead you to some apples. We'll get those later. Down here, we'll find 2 more Phoenixes and a Frog, attempting to jump a 3 tile-high wall. Kill them all. Proceed further right to be attacked by another Frog. Lure it back to where you killed the last one for an easier time. Now to pick up those apples we left behind, there's 5 of them. Proceed over the blocks to the right to find 3 more apples and yet another frog to kill. When done, jump over the spike pit to the right to collect yet another apple. Over the hill comes another Phoenix, and after that, we see one hugging the ground. Practice your momentum throw on it, but be careful not to cause this thing to explode in your face. To the right is your exit, and you have all the points in the level, but there's additional practice and features in this level if you fall down the pit between to sets of spikes left of the exit. There will be chains with Sentries, and reaching the aerial platform at the end of the path will activate a bridge over that very pit and a barrier in the hall above the exit. But these are optional. Climb the vines to collect a REAL apple. Proceed right to collect a knife, and immediately use it on the Beehive you see. Take to the tree's vines to collect 3 apples and destroy a Giant Ant. Drop from the branches between 2 spike pits to collect another apple, and jump right to collect another knife, which you will use in the destruction of the beehive you will see. To the right, prior to a cave, is a Giant Ant that you'll need to use a momentum throw on. Before entering, if you look overhead, you may see a vine out of your reach. Ignore for now and enter that cave. In here are 3 Phoenixes, an apple, and lava pits to jump over. On the other end are 2 more giant ants to practice more momentum throws on. To the right is a locked exit and a vine. Climb the vine to find the exit key, and a jump arrow. At this point, you could end the level, but what about that vine you passed up before that cave? You can reach it now. Up there are 5 Giant Ants and 7 apples to add to your score. That's all the level has to offer. Proceed to the exit =============================== Level 2 Points [JJWLEVEL2P] =============================== 13xApple(12) = 156 2xBeehive(11) = 22 9xGiant Ant(6) = 54 3xPhoenix(4) = 12 Total = 244 points Previous Total = 574 points New Total = 818 points =============================================================================== JUNGLE MAP [JJWMAP3] =============================================================================== Out in the Jungle, there's not much but a key to open the door to level "3" and an apple. Levels "3," 6, and 7 are open for business, and 2 gates block an elevator. Go to 3 for now. =============================== Map3 Points [JJWMAP3P] =============================== 1xApple(12) = 12 Total = 12 points Previous Total = 818 points New Total = 830 points =============================================================================== LEVEL 3-5 [JJWLEVEL3] =============================================================================== Jill Enters the Hut Upon entering is a key, a locked door and a Snake on the other side. Past the Snake is a knife. Use momentum throws to take that Snake out, and proceed down the elevator, past some torches, and reach a chain. Above is a small pit with a rolling ball and another Snake to take out. Past the Snake is a chain with an apple to collect along the way, and then a gauntlet of chains with 2 crabs patrolling them. Easy pickings. Proceed upward to enter level 4. That's This place counts as several levels. Grab the apple and proceed right to a group of elevators. Jump up into the room of Pac-Man Ghosts to collect 2 more apples. When you reach 3 elevators next to each other, go up to collect an apple, then go down, killing the 2 Crabs along the way. At the end is an apple and a key to the door that was blocking the way to level 5 at the beginning of level 4. Haul your butt back there now for the final stage of this place. Collect the 2 knives in your sight and proceed to momentum throw a Crab into oblivion. Past one crab, one apple, a few torches, and several rolling balls is a locked door. Above are 3 platforms with a Crab on each, then a chain with the key at the top. Fall off the chain half a tile, and jump to your left. Jump from block to block, avoiding torch fire to collect another apple. Upon opening the door, jump to avoid a ball, and jump over the several balls that will proceed your way. After them are a Snake and a Crab to destroy, and then a Keygem. You can unlock a gate, but that's about it. =============================================================================== LEVEL 6 [JJWLEVEL6] =============================================================================== Jill Dashes Into the Castle Wow, a level with no enemies, just a puzzle. Proceed into the castle to the right, and the entrance will close behind you. Proceed until you stand over the word "Tricky!" and jump onto the center of 3 platforms. STAY IN THE MIDDLE! Keep jumping onto the platforms slightly lower than the others, than proceed to jump right and take the key. Proceed to the top-left area of the castle for 2 apples and another key. Now the top right, which consists of 2 rooms. At the top of the left room is, get this, a key. And at the top of the right is a key and apple. Now go through all those locked doors on the left side of the castle and grab the key on the roof. Proceed through the locked door to the left of where you started, grab the Keygem, and exit. =============================== Level 6 Points [JJWLEVEL6P] =============================== 3xAppple(12) = 36 1xKeygem(23) = 23 Total = 59 points Previous Total = 1076 points New Total = 1135points =============================================================================== JUNGLE MAP [JJWMAP5] =============================================================================== To the right of level 6 is an apple. You can now unlock the way to the elevator and proceed to level 8, but then you'd deprive yourself of much that the game has to offer. Proceed to level 7 to obtain a 3rd Keygem to unlock the bonus area. =============================== Map5 Points [JJWMAP5P] =============================== 1xApple(12) = 12 Total = 12 points Previous Total = 1135 points New Total = 1147 points =============================================================================== LEVEL 7 [JJWLEVEL7] =============================================================================== Jill Explores the Forest Grab the Spinning Blade and head right to grab an apple, kill a Phoenix, and grab another apple. Head through the waterfall into a cave, proceed down, jump vine-to-vine and drop down to get an apple and jump arrow. Make your way around, avoiding Sentries, kill the Gator, and exit the cave. Go back to where you started to jump to a previously unreachable area. A Message Apple will tell you to save. On the two platforms with eyes, there are two Gators. You will be told to go up, but ignore that. Head left to find a pit full of Phoenixes and a Gator. 7 Phoenixes to be exact. Kill them all and grab the Phoenix Symbol at the end to become a Phoenix. It's apple collecting time. Go back to, but not into the waterfall cave. In the air nearby are 8 apples. Now to go where you're told, up after those eyed platforms. Under the bridge are 2 apples, and up and to the right of it is another. Take out that Gator on the bridge. Grab the key and proceed to destroy another Gator. Once you reach a wall, head upwards, passing up the Jill Symbol for now. Grab those 7 apples and keep flying up. Look familiar? Grab those 5 apples and then go back to the Jill Symbol to transform back. Head down and pass through the collapsing bridge. Soon after the bonus gate, you will find an Epic Symbol. Proceed further through a cave of vines to find yourself to the right of level 6. Here you will find a jump arrow for the Jungle Map and a Bonus Stage. Grab the 4 apples among the vines, and proceed left to a series of bridges. 16 apples and a key later, hit the switch to make a shortcut down. Now proceed to the right side of the room and grab the 10 apples among the blocks. Open the locked door to the left of the blocks and grab the 3 jump arrows. What was that about getting up somewhere? Grab those final 8 apples and you're done here. Proceed further down the elevator shaft and grab another apple and proceed to level 8. =============================== Map7 Points [JJWMAP7P] =============================== 3xApple(12) = 36 Total = 36 points Previous Total = 2275 points New Total = 2311 points =============================================================================== LEVEL 8 [JJWLEVEL8] =============================================================================== Jill Sneaks Into Arg's Dungeon It's demolition time, grab the Spinning Blade and start destroying a path to the left. Use the elevators and your destructive abilities to make your way to the top of the room. Up there, kill 8 Phoenixes, and grab the apple. Grab the key and fall back where you started. Head right and exit through the door. Fly upward to get a Message Apple that warns you not to touch the water. The maze is quite simple. Avoid or kill the ghosts by fire and collect the 4 keys and 5 apples within the maze and head back down. Be careful of those pools on the way down. Head through the locked doors and transform back. Grab 3 apples during the fall and touch the Epic Logo as long as you can. That's about it. =============================================================================== LEVEL 10 [JJWLEVEL10] =============================================================================== Jill Ventures Into the Knight's Puzzle I'll give you a hint, pull all the switches DOWN for this part. If that's not enough, hit the switch to your left to grab the key to your right to open the door to the left. Head up to pull the switch, grabbing the apple, proceed right and do the same act above and head left and go down the elevator to pull the final switch. You're out of the Knight's Maze part. Now the killer. Head right to the elevator to see 6 switches. This will kill you, so I'll just tell you the solution. Hit the top-center, the bottom-center, and the bottom-right so that the switches look like the following: U D U U D D Head through where the barriers were, and grab the apple & the spinning blade. In this room, there are 15 Phoenixes, and 5 apples along with 4 keys. After the two gates, you can jump up find a switch that opens a path at the bottom of the elevator. There you will find 3 Epic Logos. With the jump you can also get by level 11 without beating it, but for the sake of this walkthrough, or for getting points, it won't be skipped. =============================== Map10 Points [JJWMAP10P] =============================== 3xEpic Logo(275) = 825 Total = 825 points Previous Total = 2716 points New Total = 3541 points =============================================================================== LEVEL 11 [JJWLEVEL11] =============================================================================== Jill Creeps Into the Dark Forest Climb up the vines and grab an apple and knife. Head right to be assaulted by a Frog, then a low Phoenix. Further right is another Frog and a Giant Ant. Further right, another set. Before heading down the elevator, see that fish in the water? Hardest 7 points in the game. Launch the knife, head down the elevator a bit, and come back up so it doesn't fall in there, and repeat until the Evil Fish is dead. Head down the elevator, slap the Epic Logo and come up the other side. Grab the 4 apples, activate the switch, and grab 3 apples over the new bridge. Proceed right, kill the Giant Ant, and keep going until you find a Frog. Head up for 2 more Frogs, and then... 2 more Frogs... Collect the 5 apples and the key, and destroy the Giant Ant, then collect 2 more apples. Head left, and climb up to the locked door to collect 3 apples and another key. Kill the immediate Evil Fish and go around collecting the 2 apples, 4 Keygems, and killing 5 more Evil Fish. Head back to the beginning and fly up. Head left to kill a Giant Ant, a Beehive, and a Crab. Head up the hill, and kill the 7 Crabs on it. Drop into the valley, killing 7 Phoenixes, and then a Beehive. Collect the 4 apples at the bottom. Head right to kill a Giant Ant, and grab a key for the building you passed under. Grab an apple while opening the door and grab the jump arrow. Proceed to the top of the building, and touch the Epic Log without touching the apples. Now, position yourself directly between the two apples and collect them.
