Frogger 101 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Object The object of the game is to safely guide Mr. Frog across the street and river to one of the home bays at the top of the screen. Once you have brought home five frogs the game moves on to the next level. There are five levels in all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Controls Control Pad Up Move Mr. Frog Up Control Pad Down Move Mr. Frog Down Control Pad Left Move Mr. Frog Left Control Pad Right Move Mr. Frog Right Note: There is no way to pause the game ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Basic Gameplay The object is to safely guide your frog to one of the five home bays at the top of the screen before time runs out. The playing field is made up of two sections: the road and the river. The road consists of five lanes of traffic. If you get run over you lose a life. Make it across and you'll reach the sidewalk that marks the border with the river. In later levels the sidewalk will be patrolled by a snake. The river has a very strong (and unusual) current; if Mr. Frog falls in he will drown. You must make use of the turtles, logs, and alligators if you want to make it safely home. At the top of the screen are five "home bays". Simply hop into an empty home bay to end your frog's journey. Please note that if you try to enter a home bay that's already occupied, your frog will die. Once you've gotten five frogs home you move on to the next level. There are five levels in all, once you beat the fifth screen you'll restart at the first level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. General Tips - Play Battlefrogs solo. Since you have unlimited frogs/time, you'll be able to spend as much time as you want on each level practicing and learning the patterns and timing. - Unlike the original Frogger you don't have to wait for the theme song to end before you can move. - While crossing traffic you want to go north/south not east/west. - The home bay on the farthest left is the most difficult to reach. This should be the first one you try to fill, that way if you run short of time you can quickly hop into another one and try again with your next frog. - You can walk through the snake's body unscathed; only its head is deadly. - You can safely stand on the alligator's mouth while it is closed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Remember that you can stand on his mouth if it is CLOSED. - After successfully completing the fifth level the game goes back to the first. ******************************************************************************* V. Battlefrogs Battlefrogs is a two player versus mode. The object of the game is to get more frogs home than your opponent. You get one point for each frog you bring home, the player with the most points after five levels wins. Players compete simultaneously and have unlimited lives and time, you keep playing until all five home bays are filled. ******************************************************************************* VI. Version Differences Here are a few differences I've noticed between Ultimate Frogger Champion and the original: - Two player simultaneous play! - You can move your frog as soon as the level begins. - Turtles never sink. - Snakes only appear on the sidewalk. - No alligator heads appear in home bays. - No otters :( ******************************************************************************* VII. Game Review Ultimate Frogger Champion is a homebrew game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was released in 2009. According to the manual, the game "is loosely based off" the classic arcade Frogger. The object of the game is to safely guide Mr. Frog (no relation to the original Frogger) across the street and river into one of the five home bays at the top of the screen. Once you've guided five frogs home you get to move on to the next level. Standing in your way are the obstacles we all know and hate: cars, snakes, turtles, logs, and alligators. This game is very well done for a homebrew; I didn't come across any obvious bugs or glitches. The graphics and sound are faithful to the original and the gameplay feels like vintage Frogger. The two player Battlefrogs mode is a great addition. I think it's worth mentioning that the cartridge was made without the use of donor carts. Ultimate Frogger Champion finally brings the arcade classic to the NES and is definitely worth a look for fans of the original Frogger. Pros + Finally get to play Frogger on the NES! + Two player simultaneous play! Cons - What happened to the otters?! ******************************************************************************* VIII.
