INTRODUCTION G0100 ============================================================================== Welcome to Top Rider for the NES, a motorbike arcade game by Varie released in 1988. Suggestions, comments or errors - e-mail me about it. Enjoy! ============================================================================== 02.) OVERVIEW & CONTROLS G0200 ============================================================================== Use START to enter a race, continue from the menus and so on. SELECT switches between Touring and Grandprix at the main menu. During a race: `````````````` D-Pad Up - Toggle Gear Hi/Low D-Pad Down - Wheelie D-Pad Left - Steer Left D-Pad Right - Steer Right A Button - Accelerate B Button - Brake START - Pause There is also a nice peripheral available with this game, a blow-up motorbike. So it's not really a motorbike per se, but just a square that has the outlines of a bike and comes with a controller usable with it. It is not designed for adults and even as a kid you should be pretty light and slim. It's a neat idea and if you get it with the game it sure will make it a little bit more fun. Use the Low gear to start racing, once the RPM meter hits the red area you should switch to Hi gear. You will also hear a high revving sound from the bike. Whenever you want to quickly reduce your speed you can also switch to Low again without having to break. The fastest speeds at Low are around 160km/h where as Hi goes above 250km/h. When the speed drops below 100km/h you may want to switch to Low for a second, to accelerate quicker. There are two ways to crash. First is hitting a post on the side of the track, and the second one is to drive into an opponent. Try to avoid either, but getting back on the bike is fast and acceleration should only cost you a few seconds. ============================================================================== 03.) TOURING G0300 ============================================================================== Select one of the four tracks. *Day Town *Night Cruising *Sea Side *Country Road There are opponents on the track but there is no placing. All you want to do is get the best time. This mode is also useful for getting used to the game controls and practice. ============================================================================== 04.) GRANDPRIX G0400 ============================================================================== The championship has nine tracks, four road races and five world championship races. This time you race against opponents for placing, and get a score. During the game you do not actually see the race position, but there is no real strategy other than racing as fast as possible and overtake opponents when they appear in front of you. There are 2 or 3 laps for each race. o===============o | Place | Score | | | | | 1st | 15 | | 2nd | 12 | | 3rd | 10 | | 4th | 8 | | 5th | 6 | | 6th | 5 | | 7th | 4 | | 8th | 3 | | 9th | 2 | | 10th | 1 | | 11th | 0 | | .... | ^ | | 20th | 0 | | | | o===============o The racer with the highest overall score over all nine races wins the championship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP G0410 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ R1 Suzuka: (2 laps) _____ / \ | | --> | | __ | | _ _____|_______________ / \ | | / \ / | \ / \ | | / \ / \ | \ ____ / | / ¯ \ | \ __ __ | | / \ / \ / \ | | / \ / \ _ / \ _____ / | / \ / \ / \ _ / \ _______________ / R2 Sugo: (2 laps) --> __________________________________|__________________________________ / | \ / | | | | | | | | _________________ / | / | / \ / ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ \ / | / | / | / | | | | / | ___________________ / \ _______ / \ / | / | | / | / | / \ / \ / \ / \ ____________________________________________ / R3 Tsukuba: (2 laps) ____ / \ / | / | / / / / --> / / / / \/ / / \ / / | / / ______ | | / \ | / / \ | / / \ | __ / / \ | / / \ ________ | | / \ / \ | \ ____________ / \ ______ / | | / | / | | | | \ | \ | \ | \ _____________________________________________________________ / R4 Fuji: (2 laps) --> ____________________|________________________________________________ / | \ / | | ___________ / | / | / | / | / | _ / | / \ / | | | / | | | / | | | | | | | | \ / \ ___ / \ / \ _______ / \ _______ / ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP G0420 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ R1 Yugoslavia - Rijeka [4168m]: (3 laps) ____ _ / \ / \ | | / \ | | / | | | / | | | / | | | / / | | / / | | <-- / / | | / / | \ _________|_____________ / / | \ / | / | \ | / | \ | / | \ | / | \ _ / / | _ / | / \ _ / \ _____ __ / \ / \ _ / \ | \ | \ ____________ / R1 The Netherlands - Assen [6134m]: (2 laps) --> _|_____________ / | \ / \ / \ / | ______ / / _ / | / \ / | / \ / ___ | / \ / / \ | / \ _______ / __ / | | | / / | | _ / / | | / | / ____ / \ | / | / / | \ _ / | / | | | / / | | / _ / | | / / / | / | | | / | | | / | | | / | | \ / | | \ _ / | | / ________________________ / | / \ ____ / R3 France - Le Mans [4210m]: (3 laps) _ ____ / \ / \ / \ / | / \ ___________ / / / / / / / \/ / / \ / / / / / / / / / / ______________ / / / / | / \ _________ / \ / | / | / | / _________ / / / / | / \ _____________________________ / R4 GB - Donington Park [4023m]: (3 laps) ___ / \ / \ _______ / \ ______________ / \ / \ ______ / \ / | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | / | | | | | | | | | | | | | \ <-- | \ / \ ____________________|_____________ / | \ __________________________ / R5 Sweden - Anderstorp [4031m]: (3 laps) _______________________________________ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ | | | ____________________________ | | / \ | | | | | | | | | \ ________ | | | \ | | | | | | | / | _____________________ / | | | / | | | | | | | | | | | | | | / | | | / | | \ ______ / \ _______________________|______________ / | <-- ============================================================================== 05.) REVIEW G0500 ============================================================================== Gameplay: 5/10 The AI is incredibly easy to beat. In every Grandprix race you can fall off the bike several times and still make it first to the finish line around thirty seconds ahead. Some tracks can be very long, however, and the endurance will push you more than any racer out there. Then again, 7 minutes is not too long compared to other racing games out there, and there is only one race really that long. Crashes are too simple, and the opponents do not seem to be affected by it as much as you are. They are just a few sprites on the track, they don't care whether you are coming up behind them or are in your racing line, they will pull over and take you down with no avail. Too bad you are basically outnumbered 20 to 1, but then again it could be even more as there are always one or two opponents on-screen. Perhaps the game only shows us the top 20 results. Who is to know by this non-existing starting line-up. The camera forces you to stay close to the track, not very realistic. At least when you are way off the track I would expect to be taken down and not by the next pole or sign. Graphics: 6/10 Cheesy backgrounds that move around. Simply graphics, but adequate. I believe the tracks are accurate to the real races, though you hardly notice it during the race itself as there is not much sense of direction. What's up with the fuel display? It's only there for realism if you ask me. But everyone can tell you that taking a full tank of fuel on a 2-3 lap course is nothing close to realism. Why not show us the race position instead? It seems that nobody of the other racers is actually racing against you at the time of your drive. In other words, race time alone determines the winners of the points. And the other racers only have two different colors, white and green. Even 8-bit consoles can do better than. Sound: 6/10 Neat tunes for the menus and at least no music during the race. The rev sound is also acceptable which could easily be annoying with these old games. Every time you pass an opponent there is a 'swoosh' sound which is a nice touch. The rest of the game is too basic to require any more sound effects. Overall: 5/10 Touring is very boring and the Grandprix can only be started from the Road one. After a few times through you won't touch this again. There is also now 2-player mode which could have been a lot more fun. After the 9 race championship there isn't much else to do but try for better times. ============================================================================== 06.)
