Player discretion is advised. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | TW1: Intro | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Titan Warriors is a prototype NES game, a variant on Vulgus. As is often the case, this game is also unfinished. There are hit detection and balance issues in this title, but it is very much playable. As far as shmups on the NES go, Titan warriors can compete. While it's not as fully polished as some of them, it is definitely a fun game. The stages are really short but the bosses are fierce. It makes for a little lack of balance but overall, it is a decent title. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | TW2: Gameplay | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= B: Shoot A: Launch Side Cannons Start: Pause Control Pad: Move Ship Titan Warriors is divided up into 6 stages with two zones each. They take place in our solar system on the land of the planet and in the surrounding space. As with most shmups, you need to shoot enemies and destroy a boss enemy at the end of each Zone. Now, you are fragile, and one hit will destory you. You can gain power-ups for your ship in the form of side cannons - which you can launch from your ship and will slowly make its way back to you. This will allow you to get a greater range of fire. There are also laser upgrades for your main cannon, either vertical or diagonal, and both are useful in their own situations. Without power-ups in this game, you're too slow and frail to really compete. While, yes, the stages are really short you're also too weak to make any difference. After the 6 stages have completed, you will see a brief ending scene, and the game will loop. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | TW3: Power-Ups | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Power-ups are a necessity in this game. The stages are fairly standard fare but the extra coverage speed granted by power-ups will allow your ship compete. While the stages _are_ short, you also start out fairly feeble. Power-ups are carried over to the next stage up to a point. If you have the max upgrades on a main weapon or the side cannons, they will be downgraded a little when you get to the next level. I'm not certain if that was intentional design or not, but beware. ***Glowing Ball - Side Cannons -You can launch them from the side of your ship to provide a wider range of cover, as they move back towards the ship. Incredibly useful. Upgrading these side-cannons add a greater range of fire, such as diagonal in addition to the vertical. More still increase the potency of shots. Straight lasers, that is. Eventually, the side cannons begin to spin around you. You can stil launch them as normal when they do this, so don't worry. ***B - ??? Perhaps a bonmb was slated to be added, but B does not seem to do anything in this build of the game. Besides points, of course. ***L - Vertical Laser -Fires a powerful laser straight ahead. Not the most useful of the power-ups but definitely pick it up if you have nothing better. The only real issue with this Laser is that it provides very little cover for the ship. In that sense, you may consider it with the side cannons. If you have an alternate method for range cover, then it is a fine choice. Upgrading it will fire a straight laser from behind your ship. If you can hold out, then it really does start to become an attractive choice. ***R - Diagonal Laser -You can fire rapid lasers diagonally. This is extremely helpful in boss fights but can be an issue in the main game if you don't have side cannons. While two lasers are fired up at diagonals, nothing is fired straight ahead. Still, it is very useful for boss enemies. It can bounce off of walls and grows in power with more R-power-ups. It will eventually get quite long, as well. ***S - Speed Up -Increases the speed of the ship. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | TW4: Stages | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= As I mentioned, the stages are really short. In terms of a guide, I'll be covering the trouble-spots of these levels and the bosses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TITAN1: Stage 1 - Mars ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***Land Zone*** Alright, so we start out and as is the norm we are completely unarmed. It's important to get armed as quickly as possible. Fall back and head right while firing. You won't be killing too many ships this way but at least you will survive. If you loop back around them the line of ships coming down from the top will provide a power-up when you eliminate them. Even a speed-up helps, so get them if possible. The next line that provides a power-up is likely next to a fairly large enemy which fires multiple shots. But the powerup is usually a very useful side cannon. If you can get it, terrific. When the buildings arrive, watch out for wall cannons. I'd stay towards the middle bottom of the screen at this point. You can fly over any part of the grey of the buildings, but not the white. Keep this in mind when destroying enemies that contain power-ups. We don't want to have a great power-up get stuck on impassable ground! When you hear audible firing, there are big guys shooting lasers just ahead. Now, these guys will be hard to take on up front if your weapon provides little range - it is exceptionally unwise to jump in front of these dudes. But if you have side cannons, you might be able to take one out by launching them. At the same time, if you cannot combat them, fly over the grey of the building behind them. Remember, only the white hurts. There are a few turrets in the tunnel between the building. If you want to take them out then launch your side cannons INTO them to destroy them on impact. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 1 ****************************************************************************** The music will change and the boss will phase in. It's fairly simnple but still dangerous. For the first part of the battle it will attack with an extendable claw and fireballs. Simple strafe it after it fires the claw. That is, fly past it when it is retracting and score a few hits. If you stay at the bottom of the screen the claw should be a non-issue at first. At first. It will become a drill. Right before this point and every time thereafter it will reach all the way down to the bottom of the screen. This is fine if you continue your previous strategy, you just have to be sure to wait for it to retract before moving. Keep in mind, it also fires the fireballs a little more frequently now too. If you have side cannons there is another, slower strategy. You can stay ABOVE this boss and never get hit. Launch the cannons and then fly above it. Try to get a few hits in this way. But as I said, it's much slower. ***Space Zone*** If you need a power-up there is a line of ships almost immediately. Try to get them because the screen isn't too thick with other ships at this time. A larger ship will appear around the next line, but it's not an exceptional threat if you have some kind of power from the last stage. If not, don't cross it if it is next to the power-up. A simple snatch and run may be more appropriate. Eventually, you will see a structure start to appear in the middle. There is a large creature ina tank, but go off to one side of it. Be careful of the turrets on the side walls, but shoout out one of the differently coloured squares here to continue on. Pick another side here. tHe large turrets on the sides will fire bursts of shots. Get past them after they fire. You will probably get a couple of powers in here, from the enemies to opposite side of the larger turrets. There are a couple of platforms with wall turrets up ahead, take them out as you go. You will eventually arrive at a large wall composed of blue orbs. Shoot your way through. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 2 ****************************************************************************** You will see this guy arrive before the the battle starts, and once it does he is fairly fierce. He fires a lot of shots and has two extendable spears. You must defeat these first. Only one will extend at a time, however. So if you fire on one while the other extends, that's a decent strategy, or on one that is retracting. You can stay in the centre of the boss but risk getting hit by shots. The best way is to strafe in and out. If you have side cannons, launch them - you can then focus on evasion. As for going above him? Well, he's really big and can fire behind him. You can try, but the success rate will be much diminished from the first boss. You may want to try it for the second phase, however. Once both spears are gone it will rapidly fire missiles forward. You must hit the centre and the missiles come quickly. So if you have side cannons, launch them and fly above him. But be WARNED - he seems to have a larger hit box on the sides than he actually shows. Don't get crushed. If you don't have side cannons, stay at the bottom of the screen and dodge missiles that come for you. After this battle, watch the brief scene at Land Zone and Stage 1 is Cleared. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TITAN2: Stage 2 - Jupiter ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***Land Zone*** The ships that come are decently quick and big, and launch a lot of shots. For now, stay towards the bottom and fire upon them. Dodge out of the way of the shots. The green spiders are similar, but they have a very twitchy way of moving, they sometimes halt and then change their horizontal position. When the golden walls arrive, there will be these squares with circles in the middle. If you approach them, they become orbs that diagonally shoot lightning. Stay beneath them and shoot at them until they stop. Do not try to fly over them even after they are destroyed, however, as they will make you crash. Try to stay towards the left with them if possible, as that's where the wall will have an opening when a horizontal wall eventually arrives. Side cannons help in this part. Launch them as you fly through the tunnels here, as the wall turrets fire quite a bit. If you don't have them, hug the bottom wall for the first set and try to skip past the second. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 3 ****************************************************************************** The boss phases in. It's pretty fast, firing red projectiles straight forward and missiles that explode into shots that often head towards your position of when they were created. You're best to stay at the bottom of the screen, and shooting the missiles yourself, so as to have a better idea of their position. It actually doesn't take many hits to destroy, but it's just that it is more difficult to avoid its attacks. Stay at the bottom firing and dodging. Side cannons help immensely, and if you need to launch them, by all means launch them. ***Space Zone*** Even the large enemies here will not stay around for long. But as before, the lines that arrive fire multiple shots. Clean house and watch out for missiles from enemies that pass you - don't hug the bottom. When the large ship-like structure appears, take to either side of it. Worry more about the normal enemies. The ship has some kind of arms but they are no threat as long as you don't actively fly into them. More of these structures lie up ahead. These ones fire lasers so get between them and start destroying wall turrets. The arms are actually QUITE sangerous here. When they open, fly through. Keep tapping back until you have a good go at flying through. There are turrets at the end of this run so watch out! The shots stand to get you if the arms don't. So keep your eye out. Watch out for the green spiders and take the left path as it leads straight to the exit opening. Take out wall cannons as you go along. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 4 ****************************************************************************** Right before the grey road ends, the screen stops scrolling and the boss rushes onscreen. This guy is really hard if you don't have side cannons or a wide reaching weapon. On its brain-dome is a crystal you must hit to damage him. However, he very often fires eye lasers AND his claws reach to the bottom of the screen. There is also the odd small orb shot thrown into the mix if you aren't careful. AND if you try to go up past the grey section, the stage will be swarmed by enemies! Well, if you trust your reflexes you can stay between his eyes and rack up a ton of damage. Otherwise, you need a weapon that can hit him at an angle or the side cannons launched under him. Stay beneath the squares as he won't go that far to the side. They DO fire shots too though so there's little reprieve! Still, if you can't handle staying right in front of him, this is the best option. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TITAN3: Stage 3 - Saturn ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***Land Zone*** The stationary enemies jigging back and forth are no problem, shoot them down. The bigger threats are eyeballs on the protrusions of ground here. They fire missiles straight forward and rapidly. You can avoid them if you are having trouble - they stay on the hills. The hill/protrusion-like things are just like the buildings on Mars. You cannot fly on the top of them, the yellow and orange diamond-checked areas. As you go between the walls, there will be a lot of enemies. Stick to the bottom at this point. The large ships that appear as you enter the blue area fire red shots that bounce off of solid structures. These are often tight areas so focus all your fire onto these ships. If at all possible, let the ball bounce out into space before you try to continue. Take the middle path when the blue starts. When you leave the blue area there will be a ton of glowing shots. Dodge them and take care of the ships that arrive. One of those big ships is also here, try to stay way from his side so as not to get hit by the bouncing ball. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 5 ****************************************************************************** This guy will appear after the next yellow structures, invisible! He's really not that strong, but this cloaked nature is what can fool you! Luckily, there are red spots on him that show up. He launches regular shots in a variety of directions and also fires lasers forward. Once you know his position, move with him staying just ahead. When you get to the side of the screen - you should go there before him and back off to the other side when there is a pause in his lasers. If you keep firing and stay just slightly ahead of him, he will go down in no time. ***Space Zone*** The enemies here that spread out are not new - they were in the previous land zone, but not really in full force. Most of the enemies here easily dispatched but these guys cannot be harmed when they spread out, just avoid them. Watch out for the wall turrets when we arrive at the structure. There's also going to be a large tank with creature, just like Mars. And just like Mars, go to one side of it and fire on the square to progress. Eventually, there will be blue structures. There are moving laser turrets in here and as such you must shoot them before they get down to you. They stop before the shoot so if you can't get them all right away, you have some time to react and evade. There will be a blue wall up ahead, go all the way left to find the opening. Try to follow the path here or you will crash. Take a right to proceed even if those four panels can hold power-ups -- don't risk getting killed for them. And as you get up there will be two chambers with power-up panels. Again, this is a trap. But if you can get in and get out - great, because there's a boss just ahead. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 6 ****************************************************************************** This sucker can be hard. He fires regular shots from his claws and also launches eyeballs that fly around the room - after you. You have to hit him in the eyes to hurt him - those that are still on the boss that is, the chasers seem to ignore damage. While launching side-cannons is always good - the boss will follow you as well to some degree. This does get hectic. Play the evasion game until both chaser eyes are after you. Stay near the bottom dodging the eyes and firing on the boss until it comes close. Escape, launch your pods and lure it back up... get back to the bottom asap. Don't pass an arm that has a claw out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TITAN4: Stage 4 - Uranus ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***Land Zone*** Alright, stay toward the middle of the screen as you fight these enemies, maybe bust a little lower. Enemies will attack form the bottom of the screen here as well so you want to the room to respond if you need to. You'll be pretty swamped by enemies up until you reach the road. The fights are pretty standard fare, shoot down the enemies in convenient formations and dodge the shots. Onc eyou're over the concrete, watch out for laser ships. They move back and forth quickly firing lasers. They should be no problem if you have a decent power, but if not just avoid it. The blue walls in this section will destroy you if you touch them. The B's coming up ahead are far to dangerous to risk getting. Just take out the turrets and get ready to fight a boss. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 7 ****************************************************************************** Here's a standby of these games, the heavily armed wall. Either way, simply fly around the slow moving missiles while pounding the large red core. It will go down really fast - the weakest boss yet. ***Space Zone*** The black squares move fast and may be a little hard to see. But fire on them as they come and dodge them when they get near to you. The giant heads coming up shoot missiles out of their nose which split into shots - avoid them. Shoot the missile and dodge to the side. Now we enter a meteor field. You can fly over the smaller meteors but larger ones kill. Larger meteors that move will open up to reveal a laser shooting robot. Don't line straight up with it and you'll do fine. When you approach huge meteors with bars between them, you will have to go around the outside edge - beware of the wall turrets on the bar. Entering the complex of bars and meteors, stay towards the middle. The biggest threat here are the wall turrets but if a black square is deflecting your shots, avoid it while you can and don't get boxed in. If you see a meteor robot it becomes a priority target. When the complex changes to white and blue, head right for the first opening and left for the second. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 8 ****************************************************************************** Like the land zone boss, this aircraft attacks primarily with homing missiles. Stay towards the bottom and dodge the missiles while you fire on the cockpit. This one is all reflex. Just loop around the missiles and concentrate on the cockpit. It's kind of a small target and is actually easiest to hit with a straight attack. There's not a whole lot of strategy other than that. Don't ram into the blocks and if you have to go off of the grey that's fine. It's more or less a game of evasion, however. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TITAN5: Stage 5 - Pluto ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***Land Zone*** Alright, enemies kind of pick up their game here, firing a lot more often. You cannot fly over dark blue structures but you can fly under the grated areas. A tank after the grate takes a beating but you should be more concerned about the turrets that flank your exit. Make them priority and launch the side cannons/evade them before you concentrate on the tank. Afte rteh yellow structures, you can fly over the dark blue __floor__. This is good as you need some room to move. You're confined and the enemies will be firing. They spin and launch a lot of shots. Destroy them asap or at least try to dodge them from far away. The complex of passages up ahead have a lot of turrets. There's no real best se4ction here, but gravitate towards the centre at the end to enter the next section. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 9 ****************************************************************************** The boss fires missiles ahead which explode into shots. It's best to fire at these when they are released - it will allow you to damage the boss and know where the shots are coming from and going to. Continually pound the boss with shots until it transforms. When it transforms it will fly around and shoot lasers. It is invincible at this time so avoid it. When it goes back to its original pattern, start firing on it and the missiles again. It can get hectic, but keep it up and the boss will fall. ***Space Zone*** The start of the level is justa lot of grates with firing ships and wall turrets. Just scroll back and forth racking up points. Try not to destroy lines of enemies on top of the white areas, so as you can actually get the power-up. Pass between the aircraft and stay toward the centre. This allows you to dodge the wall turrets while firing on the formations of enemies that appear straight ahead. Int he complex of passages, gravitate toward sthe centre so as to have the best escape route. You will likely have to launch your side cannons a lot here to take care of the wall cannons. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 10 ****************************************************************************** Wow, again your strategy is limited. This ship is much like your own. It has side cannons and it CAN launch them. Do not try to pass above it because the screen swarms with enemies and it can smack you with its side cannons. Here's an interesting factor - it can only launch its cannons when you do. But it fires independently of you. If you have the R laser, you can stay at the far right (and likely left) side of the screen and never get hit as long as you do not make him launch the pods. You should never make it launch these pods anyways. If it does, it makes it rather difficult to survive. They will close back in on it though. If you don't have R, you will have to strafe the front of the ship. Stafe it when it is far away and then hide at the sides. Rinse and repeat. Much more dangerous, naturally, but less confusing than if you wanted to launch your side cannons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TITAN6: Stage 6 - Vulgus ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Message from Vulgus Neptune....Destroy!! Come on!! To Vulgus! Ha, now we're getting somewhere. Vulgus is the last level. Perhaps this message means that Neptune was destroyed? ***Land Zone*** You cannot fly over the brainlike areas. Destroy the yellow circles. They are stationary so you should be able to get them all before they reach you. Opening and closing mouths take a beating but they are similar. Just concentrate most of your fire on them. Yellow claws will fly out of the wall at times. Simply shoot them in flight. They fire shots when they aren't in flight... and seem to be invulnerable, so try not to pass them until they take off. The structures that look like an old boss are interesting. I believe you can fly into the mouth but not anywhere else. It's not worth the probable crash. As you weave around these structures you will want to make use of the ability to launch the side cannons so as to pre-empt any upcomign enemies. Towards the end there will be more mouths, but you will be so close to them it is probably best to just avoid them. After some tight corridors, you will fight the boss. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 11 ****************************************************************************** That head that gave you the Message from Vulgus? That's here. Three will appear and launch bubbles taht split into shots. Watch where they phase so you don't get hit when they disappear and reappear. Just stay away from them, launch your side cannons if necessary and keep firing. There will be no visible damage though heads start to explode. Once all three are gone, that's the end of the fight. ***Space Zone*** The space zone will start out pretty thin. There's wall cannons and enemies but in no great number. The large creatures in tanks are here again but the first pair you find will have no squares to shoot. Just weave on through. After the second pair of these, you will encounter mouths. Just skip these and fly up just below the yellow claws. Destroy them when they launch. Use your side cannons to take care of the wall cannons. After you fly around the head of the brain boss, there are a lot of yellow circles. They can actually be dangerous in large numbers. To the sides there will be wall turrets. So if you stay in the middle towards the bottom, you should be able to take out a lot of the yellow circles. Stick towards teh centre to find the passage into the next wall anyways. You will have to follow this path through. Avoid the mouth if you absolutely cannot destroy it. ****************************************************************************** BOSS 12 ****************************************************************************** Pretty hard. this skull fires a laser form his mouth (get to either side asap) and summons waves and waves of blue enemies. It also creates a slight barrier by firing out its eyeballs and forming a current between them. R-Laser is most definitely reocmmended here. Concentrate on shooting the enemies and eyeballs until the defense drops then shoot either side of the skull. Do not get right in the middle or you will be lasered. Eventually half of its face will fall off. Then it's time to work on it further - keep doing what you were doing. You won't blow the other half of its face of but explode the whole thing. Really, the big thing here is not to get killed by the blue guys. Launch your side cannons, do whatever, to avoid them. The boss will get hit by association really. Watch the ending. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= | TW5: Credits | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Thanks to Capcom for creating the game.
