INTRODUCTION G0100 ============================================================================== Welcome to 'The Triathlon' for the NES, a triathlon sports game released by K Amusement Leasing in 1988. Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Note that spelling errors of the games have not been corrected on purpose. Enjoy! ============================================================================== 02.) OVERVIEW & CONTROLS G0200 ============================================================================== There are 2 modes for the game. The normal triathlon run that consists of swimming, cycling and running and a special event. You have various strength bars during the competition. The one you need to look out for is the Stamina as it runs out if you are exhausted and then you cannot finish the event. By picking up various icons along the way you can replenish this. Controls: ````````` SELECT: Switch between events on the main menu. Swim: Use A to gain speed and the directional buttons to move around in the water. The steering is done by the perspective of the swimmer, not the player. As you steer left you will make a motion to turn left as well, but not straight away. Swimming can be a little confusing first, but once you get the hang of it the main problem is not getting dragged into the whirlpools, getting stuck in buoys or getting hit my competitors. Bike: Use A to speed up, D-Pad to steer right or left. Staying on the bike is one thing, taking good paths is another. Unfortunately I can only help you with the latter. Some tips with cycling are to slow down in the bends, be careful around competitors as they are much tougher when it comes to duels, and well, to take the correct turns as described below. Run: A is for running, and B is for jumping over the obstacles or grabbing the icons hanging above your head. Use the D-Pad to move up and down. Running isn't so hard itself, but the obstacles are. The plants are ok but the potholes are a nightmare. ============================================================================== 03.) TRIATHLON G0300 ============================================================================== Pick your player. There is no best and worst athlete as each of them have strength and weaknesses in different events. Depending on your performance in the triathlons, you get bonus points to add to the stats after each one. o-----------------------o o-----------------------o o-----------------------o | 1: Robert Stith | | 2: Shinga Takada | | 3: Daniel Johnson | | U.S.A. | | Japan | | U.S.A. | | Age: 28 | | Age: 24 | | Age: 25 | | Blood: B | | Blood: A | | Blood: AB | |-----------------------| |-----------------------| |-----------------------| | Swim: Speed . . . 7 | | Swim: Speed . . . 9 | | Swim: Speed . . . 6 | | Dush. . . . 9 | | Dush. . . . 7 | | Dush. . . . 5 | | Stamina . . 5 | | Stamina . . 6 | | Stamina . . 6 | |-----------------------| |-----------------------| |-----------------------| | Bike: Speed . . . 9 | | Bike: Speed . . . 6 | | Bike: Speed . . . 9 | | Dush. . . . 7 | | Dush. . . . 9 | | Dush. . . . 7 | | Stamina . . 5 | | Stamina . . 6 | | Stamina . . 6 | |-----------------------| |-----------------------| |-----------------------| | Run: Speed . . . 7 | | Run: Speed . . . 5 | | Run: Speed . . . 8 | | Dush. . . . 6 | | Dush. . . . 9 | | Dush. . . . 7 | | Stamina . . 9 | | Stamina . . 7 | | Stamina . . 7 | o-----------------------o o-----------------------o o-----------------------o o-----------------------o o-----------------------o o-----------------------o | 4: Scott Anderson | | 5. Continue until you see a whirlpool on the right hand side. After this, quickly get over to the right side. Stick to this side until you reach the boat. Go right around it and turn south. Stick to the right side once again until you pass the next whirlpool. As you pick up the 2nd Stamina boost in a row make it over to the left side but then straight back right after you have passed the whirlpool. What follows are two consecutive whirlpools on the left as you continue on to the finish line of this section. Bike 40km: `````````` Qualifying Time: 0370 At the first junction, stay on the straight line. After some bends, take the turn to the left. You should find a Stamina boost waiting instead of the grassy area on the right. Next up, go right for a T-icon instead of grass. What follows are some long bends, take it a little slower here if you must but I never had trouble keeping full speed. At the next junction turn right. Quite a sharp bend greets you and then a few more longer ones as you make your way to the finish line of this section. Run 10.0km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0370 First you need to jump over a few plants. It's not very hard at all. After a while there are some kind of potholes in the street. These are a little to run around. Then there are a lot more of the plants waiting for you as you make your way to the finish line of the triathlon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Japan Ironman Triathlon G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Swim 3.2km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0320 Stay on the right for a couple of whirlpools will soon be in the center. After those, make your way over to the left for stamina boost. There is a T-icon later, which means the pool is about to show up on the right. Continue north and west when the boat appears. Immediately turn southbound and stay on the left side. Swim right after the pool, grab the stamina there and stick to it as you go south. Shortly after the T-icon is a pool so swim left, then right again. If you see another stamina icon, that means you need to keep going left again. Bike 161km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0580 After a while, take the first turn right. The other one is a little grassy but contains a stamina boost. Up to you what you need right now. The next junction stay on the right, and then immediately go left. After a few buildings, go right and take the boost and the easier terrain. At the next turn, go left and when you get to the next area, take the right side each time. The third one does have a stamina boost on the left side but is hard to get to and not worth it. Run 32.2km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0440 Get the skateboard and stay towards the bottom side of the screen. Avoid the potholes, it's not too hard. Towards the end the path through them is at the top. Jump over the new few gaps and get another skateboard. The path once again is towards the bottom side and steering towards the middle. A few more gaps follow to the finish line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paris International Triathlon G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Swim 1.2km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0320 Swim over to the left. After a boost get ready to go right, just before the upcoming whirlpool. Immediately go back left. Then make our way to the right and swim around the boat to the south. Stick to the left side. Slalom around the next few pools, the left side always comes in pairs of two. Bike 40km: `````````` Qualifying Time: 0370 At the first junction turn right, it's slightly faster and both sides feature grass at one point. After the houses stay on the left and take the left again afterwards to get both boosts. Next go left for another boost and follow the road through the large grass patch. For the final split, the left one is a little difficult but features another boost whereas the right one is a straight line that will make it seem the finish line is just around the corner - which is. Run 12.0km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0370 Just stay in a straight line until you get on the skateboard. Stick to the top and after the first pothole go south and then slalom around the rest. Jump a few plants. Sick to the top as you jump the next few to land on the second skateboard. Get through the next few potholes and the finish line is just beyond. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hawaii Ironman Triathlon G0310 World Championship ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Swim 3.8km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0420 First go left, then turn back right and stay there for a while. There will be a pool soon, swim around it but stay on the right side once more. When you pass a whirlpool, return to the left side until two have passed which means it is time to go back right. Swim around the boat and start going south as usual. Pass two pools while you stay on the left side, go over to the right and pass two more. Quickly go left to miss the pool in front of you but return right straight away. Continue to slalom until the finish line. Bike 180km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0720 For the first two branches, go left each time. After a long stretch the next split is pretty much the same. Left has a T-bonus but more grass, up to you. When you pass the houses get ready to turn left. Stay on a straight line for the next couple of junctions, unless you are really desperate for bonus icons. Take the left afterwards, and right when you get to the next split. Following a longish stretch, stay on the right, then turn left and later stay right once more for a straight line (left is bendy but has a stamina boost). Go straight after the houses, then stay on the left side unless you require the T-icon on the right. Run 42.2km: ``````````` Qualifying Time: 0440 Get going, then jump the ditches and grab the skateboard. The potholes have gaps at the bottom you can slalom around. Jump the next few ditches and then run into the skateboard near the top of the lane. Start the potholes low and then stay around the center. You are nearly at the end, the 42.2km stat is misleading. Now you finished the final race. You are the real Ironman. And you are the greatest... ============================================================================== 04.) SPECIAL G0400 ============================================================================== 1st Stage: Splash Fight ``````````````````````` Swimming, while being followed by a shark. If you get caught it's an instant game-over, obviously. But constantly going fast is only thing to remember, as bumping into obstacles including other swimmers that aim for you is not an easy task. After a few whirlpools they are lots of buoys to keep out for. 2nd Stage: Galaxy Course II ``````````````````````````` Start cycling immediately or you will be too slow for the first biker. There are about a dozen of these guys that will try to bump into you and therefore blow you up. Avoid them, then swerve around the asteroids as well. Soon more asteroids will come in from the sides and a spaceship starts shooting at you. When it's gone some more meteoroids will be in your way, as well asteroids fly into the screen from the side, but just stay in the middle and there shouldn't be too much trouble. Soon you will reach the finish. 3rd Stage: Midnight Running ``````````````````````````` For the first stretch you can only waste time, but try not to. After the few potholes, aim for the middle to jump across the razor sharp floor. Next there are some red mines on the road. Touch them and you die. Stay just below the top of the lane to get through unharmed. A few potholes later there is another minefield. Do the same as before. After the third minefield, center your guy once more to make the trampoline. Now run fast as some kind of aliens land from above. Shortly afterwards some green runners will come up from behind and try to slam you to the ground. You can get up, it only wastes time. When they stop coming, center in the middle once more to make the jump across all gaps. When you see a few potholes, it means you need to jump either at the top or bottom of the lane, but you can also just make it across without. The finish line is just around the corner. Now you finished the final race. You are the real Ironman. And you are the greatest... ============================================================================== YY.) REVIEW GYY00 ============================================================================== Gameplay: 5/10 Short, tough controls and pretty boring to play. Many gameovers will probably cut the gaming experience short for the average player. Graphics: 6/10 Not too shabby. Not very good pictures of the guys and the athletes do not look too great either, but the scenery took some work. Sound: 5/10 Not a bad tune, but quite repetitive. Overall: 5/10 The game is in English for some reason, but has lots of spelling mistakes. It doesn't really matter, but it's funny nonetheless. Austlaria :) Either way, you'll most likely play this for 10 minutes and never bother again. ============================================================================== ZZ.)
