INTRODUCTION * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* It's 1991. Terminator 2 Judgment Day stormed into theatres creating an utter sensation among a nine year old myself and every other self respecting school kid this side of the moon. T2 was literally everywhere. Although none of my friends actually admitted that they hadn't seen the movie, previews and features on television every second night was enough for most to get a hold of the storyline and characters and lie about how they went and saw the most violent movie of the year. As with other blockbuster movie releases in the past, kids could look forward to a mass of merchandising, particularly toys and video games, and that's where the old fatihful NES came in. Terminator 2 Judgment Day the video game was released to cash in on the success of the movie and it sure worked, because it worked on me like a drug. Little did I know when I rented this game all those years ago that this "drug" would not wear off even to this day, as I relived T2 the video game when I picked it up for $1.50 at a pawn store. Without further ado, let's relive a game that most NES gamers are sure to have played with either little or no success - Terminator 2 Judgment Day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 3. T2: THE STORY * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* 3 billion human lives ended on August 29th, 1997. The survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day. They lived only to face a new nightmare, the war against the machines... It has raged endlessly for three decades...but the tide is turning. The human Resistance scores greater victories with every day. SKYNET-the supercomputer responsible for the nuclear holocaust and that controls the machines-has been forced into a last desperate effort to destroy its enemy. It has sent two terminators back through time to eliminate the future leader of the Resistance...John Connor. The first terminator was programmed to strike his mother, Sarah Connor, in the year 1984...before he was born. It failed. The second-a T-1000 Advanced Prototype-was sent to strike John himself when he was 10 years old. As before, the Resistance must send a lone warrior to protect him. The only question is who will reach John first: the T-1000 or you...a Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 T-800 Terminator captured and reprogrammed by the Resistance? Your skin of living tissue allows you to blend in with humans unnoticed while your metal endoskeleton provides virtual invincibility. Your lethal efficiency as a terminator makes you, a machine, the only warrior who can save John and mankind! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 4. CONTROLS * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* UP: Enter and exit doors and elevators DOWN: Kneel, Aim gun backwards (2nd level only), places bombs (4th level only) LEFT: Moves the Terminator left RIGHT: Moves the Terminator right B: Jump A: Fire Gun START: Pauses the game SELECT: Not Used -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 5. GOOD GUYS * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* - The Terminator (Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 T-800) + Played in the movie by Arnold Schwarzenegger + You control this character through out the game + Moves are limited to punch, jump, run, and in the later levels fire your gun - John Connor (Future leader of the resistance) + Played in the movie by Edward Furlong + Appears in level 2, where you must protect him from the T-1000, and the following cut scene - Sarah Connor (Mother of John) + Played in the movie by Linda Hamilton + She is a mission objective in level 3, as you must protect her from the T-1000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 6. BAD GUYS * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* - T-1000 + Played in the movie by Robert Patrick + Levels 3,4 and 5 carries gun + can only be killed by molten lava - Biker Men + Found in level 1, these enemies carry iron bars and aren't afraid to use them. + Not too tricky, takes 8 punches to put down. - Exercise punks + These guys remind me of joggers, hence the name I gave them. + Found also in level 1, these enemies conceal no weapons but attack in numbers + Take 8 punches to put down. - Big Biker Boss + The boss of level 1. Difficult at first, but easy once the method is applied (see walkthrough) - Hospital Guards + Found in level 3 + Reminiscent of the enemies found in level 1, these guys take around 8 punches to put down, but this shouldn't be required if you haven't wasted the ammunition of your gun which you now carry for the rest of the game. + *REMEMBER* From level 3 to Level 4 John permits you from killing anybody so be sure to fire ducking to hit the legs or you will lose points, and not receive a decent gun. - Cyberdyne Guards + Found in level 4 + Reminiscent of the enemies found in level 1 and 3, these guys take around 8 punches to put down, but this shouldn't be required if you haven't wasted the ammunition of your gun which you now carry for the rest of the game. + *REMEMBER* From level 3 to Level 4 John permits you from killing anybody so be sure to fire ducking to hit the legs or you will lose points. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 7. ITEMS * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Not an abundance of items at our Terminator's disposal, but enough to get the job done. + ENERGY - Replenishes Arnie's energy. It is a nuclear symbol with the word "Energy" on it. + AMMO - Gives Arnie plenty of ammo. It looks like a pink gun. + SECURITY CARD - Gives access to the elevators in Pescadero. It is small pink rectangle with the word "Card" on it (only found in level 3) + BOMBS - Used to destroy Cyberdyne labs. They are small yellow explosives (Only found in level 4) + EXTRA LIFE - Gives an all important extra life! It is the T2 Logo with the word "LIFE" above it. + CONTINUE - Gives an an extremely valuable continue option once you have lost all your lives. It is the T2 Logo with the word "GAME" above it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 8. POINTS SYSTEM * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Terminator 2 Judgment Day uses a points based system which determines what guns you receive in the later levels. Guns range from an ordinary shotgun to the ultimate mini-gun. You gain points by defeating enemies, progressing to new levels and by NOT killing ANY enemies in levels 3 and 4. You must shoot them in the legs. (More on this in the walkthrough) On the other hand, I think you can also lose points by killing those certain enemies in levels 3 and 4. You will need 8,000+ points to get the ultra cool mini-gun. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 9. GAME WALKTHROUGH * *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Terminator 2 Judgment Day is split into a total of five levels including four relatively simple levels and one extremely difficult level that mirror the movie LEVEL 1 - Truck Stop LEVEL 2 - Flood Channel LEVEL 3 - Pescadero Mental Hospital LEVEL 4 - Cyberdyne LEVEL 5 - Steel Mill Each level has its own mission objectives and enemies == LEVEL 1 == Truck Stop The level where the game begins. This is your best chance to get a hang of the game before things get too frantic in the later levels. As the the Terminator, you have a standard punch, and can jump, which before too long will be put into good use. You start off in view of a semi trailer with several biker men populated around it. These men along with almost all enemies in the game, take around eight punches to put down. Take out the ones on the ground first, then the ones on top of the truck itself by finding which parts of the truck are ledges and proceed to jump to the top. Once these initial biker men are taken out, an arrow pointing to the right of the screen appears. **NOTE** Arg Matey (injuredninja@yahoo.com) has come up with a strategy for defeating the enemies in this level. "In stage one where you fight all the bikers outside the bar, you can just jump up on the trailers and jump off onto a group of bad guys, damaging them all at once. Not really a pointer, just another method of attack that can sometimes save you some life early on." Thanks Arg!! Follow the arrow and the game will explain that the arrows open up more of the level, and will only appear when all the enemies on the current screen have been taken care of. Follow the arrow and you will see the backs of several semi trailers. The back of these trucks can be used as a ledge, which you will need to utilise to avoid the motorcycle which comes past. *NOTE* These motorcycles cannot be defeated. After jumping the motorcycle another semi trailer just like the first one you encountered appears, only this time populated by exercise punks. Take care of all enemies and continue on to the next semi trailer and jump to avoid the motorcycle. If all enemies in this area are dead, an arrow will appear. Follow the arrow and there will be more semi trailers which you can only see the back of. Exercise men will attack. Take them all out. Another arrow will appear. Again follow it, to see another semi trailer populated by biker men. Take them out avoiding all motorcycles that may appear. Keep going and you will get to a bridge area where exercise punks jump out and attack. Be wary and do anything to avoid being hit, as these boys like to double team. Keep going taking out more men when you will see the brown building which is actually the bar, where the boss is. Avoid all motorcycles and enter. *NOTE* To enter the building you must first jump onto the landing. ==BAR In the bar you will encounter both biker men and exercise punks who jump out from behind pool tables and such, so be careful. Once they have been taken care of the Big Biker Boss appears. Intimidating at first, the boss is quite easy if you use the following method: Get within punching range and land 2-3 punches so he falls back. Once done, quickly retreat and repeat until dead. It is vital that you don't treat him like a normal enemy because his punches and kicks will rip you apart. Just follow the method and you will win flawlessly. Cut Scene - You have acquired clothes, boots, motorcycle, and weapon. T-1000 identified. ==LEVEL 2 ==Flood Channel This level which is straight out of the movie is my favourite as it is quite an enjoyable experience once mastered, but flat out frustrating at first. What most people don't realise about the controls of this level is that the Terminator can not only shoot forwards but backwards by holding DOWN on the directional pad which is absolutely vital to lasting fifteen seconds in this level. For the duration of the level you are on your motorcycle avoiding boxes, oil slicks, car wrecks, and most importantly the T-1000, who follows you in a semi trailer. Your motorcycle accelerates automatically which enables you to concentrate on controlling left or right, and aiming and firing your gun, which is used to open the gates and ward off the T-1000. To fire your gun press the B button. You automatically fire ahead, so to fire backwards hold down than fire. The first section is short and simple. At the end of each section is a closed gate. To open it and continue, fire at the gate itself. If you don't get it open by the time you reach the gate, you lose a life. Continue on past the first section and soon enough the T-1000 will be on you in his truck. To combat his crushing you shoot your gun dead directly at he center of the truck continuously to successfully ward him off for a few seconds. While doing this, car wrecks, oil slicks and crates need to be avoided/shot at, as well as the odd gate opened. The last section is a long straight just about clear of obstacles where at the end you catch up with John on his bike and end the level. **EXTRA LIFE/CONTINUE** Arg Matey (injuredninja@yahoo.com) has informed me of an extra life that I missed. "If I'm not mistaken, there is a third extra life in the game. Technically, it's the first extra life." **New information from Lubic1428@cs.com has revealed that the extra life found in level 2: Flood Channel is actually an extra continue! You can get to it by shooting at the very last car wreck in the final section of the level. Thanks guys!! Cut Scene - The Terminator explains to John the situation that they are in, and in a way to lure John the T-1000 may take the form of John's mother, Sarah. John tells the Terminator to high tail it to Pescadero Mental Hospital to rescue his mother. In the same cut scene John also tells the Terminator that he cannot just go around killing people. So for levels 3 and 4 where you have a gun, you must aim at the enemies legs, causing them to become inactive, but not die. ==LEVEL 3 ==Pescadero Mental Hospital This stage is split into six levels of the hospital. On each level there are seven doors which can be entered by pressing UP on the directional pad. Inside these doors are rooms which may hold energy, ammo, and a security card. As well as these doors, there is an elevator, which allows you to go up a level but can only be entered when the security card has been found. You begin the level with a gun and full ammunition, but, with all the guards roaming the premises you'll soon find your stocks will become low, which is why it is important to conserve ammo and pick up all ammo items you find. Also in this level you'll meet up with the T-1000, who can be quite annoying to say the least. Two types of enemies roam this level - security guards in the corridors who carry guns, and guards in the rooms who carry iron bars. Also occasionally, guns appear from the ceilng firing at you. They cannot be defeated. When in the rooms, get in and quickly get out, as guards will flood the room, or if you are on one of the higher levels, it'll be the T-1000 who'll be after you. Below is the locations of items on all levels. *Level 1* 1st room - Energy 2nd room - Security Card 7th room - Ammo *Level 2* 3rd room - Security Card 5th room - Ammo *Level 3* 2nd room - Energy 4th room - Security Card *Level 4* 1st room - Ammo 3rd room - Security Card *Level 5* 1st room - Security Card 6th room - Extra Life *Level 6* 1st room - Ammo 2nd room - Ammo 3rd room - Ammo 4th room - Ammo and Sarah Connor Once you touch Sarah Connor, the level is completed. Tips on taking out guards and T-1000 - + All guards must be taken out with a shot to the legs + If you have no ammo your best bet is to jump over their them and head for the nearest room that holds ammo + T-1000 takes around a full round of ammo to put down. Bad thing is he pretty much comes back again straight away. Run like hell. Enter rooms. Exit rooms. Repeat until you get to the end of the level. This applies mostly to level 6 when the T-1000 has sped up incredibly. ==LEVEL 4 ==Cyberdyne The Cyberdyne level is much like the previous Pescadero Hospital level. It is again split into six levels, each adjoined by an elevator, only this time no Security Cards need to be found. The main deal with this stage is to destroy Cyberdyne much like the movie. Throughout the six levels are 10 bombs which need to collected from the two rooms on levels 1-4, and three rooms on level 5. You can only hold three bombs at a time though, so once you have at least two, it's a good idea to head up to level 6 and deposit them in the container provided just left of the elevator. Once all 10 have been deposited, the pressure is really applied, as you now have 80 seconds to place all 10 bombs in position on level 6 using the arrows provided. Adding that you can now only hold two bombs at a time and that the 80 seconds really does evaporate pretty quickly, and you've got one tough situation. Security guards roam the corridors with those guns hanging from the ceiling. Inside the rooms, Armed police are out to stop you. Below is the location of all bombs and miscellaneous items across the six levels *Level 1* 1st room - Ammo 2nd room - Bombs 1 and 2 and Energy *Level 2* 1st room - Nothing 2nd room - Bombs 3 and 4 *Level 3* 1st room - Bomb 5 And Energy 2nd room - Bomb 6 End of Corridor past 2nd room door - Bomb 7 *Level 4* 1st room - Ammo And Ammo 2nd room - Bomb 8 *Level 5* 1st room - Bombs 9 and 10 2nd room - 3rd room - *NOTE* rooms 1,2 and 3 are all lead to the same room so going in any one will net you both the bombs. You now have 80 seconds to place all 10 bombs in their places using the arrows. This requires split second timing. One slip-up and you will most likely run out of time, resulting in you being blown into a million pieces. Remember you can only take 2 bombs at a time, so once those 2 have been placed, hurry back to the deposit box quick smart because every second counts. Once all bombs have been placed, hurry to the elevator to end the level. ==LEVEL 5 ==Steel Mill Most definitely the hardest level in the game by a long way, with its precision jumps needed to be landed flawlessly to have any chance of finishing the game. The level consists of a series of stairs, jumps, swinging and moving platforms and dripping molten lava and bursts of fire that need to be avoided. As a sweetener of sorts the only enemy you'll encounter will be the T-1000, who shows himself three times including the final battle. I've put together a somewhat accurate step by step guide for this level covering all jumps and obstacles, so stay focused - you're almost finished! You start on a platform with a set of stairs Go up the stairs, avoiding the molten lava. Jump over barrels, avoiding the flames that shoot out. There is now a split path. Going down the stairs will eventually lead you to your first fight with the T-1000, so make your way down and dispose of him. Take him out with your gun. Once he has disappeared, head back the way you came and go up the stairs. Go left for the energy. Go back and up the set of stairs. Now you will see the first of the swinging platforms that you will need to jump on to reach the other side. Time your jump so that you jump when the platform is at its closest to you. *NOTE* The lava underneath all of the swinging or moving platforms is fatal. You WILL lose a life. That's why it is important to time your jumps to perfection. Once on the other side you will see a yellow and black platform. Jump on this than fall straight off the left side of it. You will land on another platform. Head right jumping over the pit you come across. Go up the stairs, and the stairs that follow, watching the molten lava. Get on the barrels watching fire and lava. You will see two green machines shooting fire. Run through carefully, and avoid the lava as well. There will be a conveyer belt which you must cross while avoiding lava. You will come across a pit where the both sides shoot fire. You need to time your jump so that you leave the platform just as the first flames stop. The flames on the other side will not hurt you because the time you spend in the air jumping from the platform is all the time it takes for the flames to cease allowing you to quickly pass once you have landed on the other side. Another conveyer belt is ahead, cross it making sure to avoid all lava. Go up the next set of stairs. Another swinging chain. Follow the same method for the first to cross. On the other side there is another swinging chain. Cross and go down the barrel stairs, jumping the lava. There will be more green machines spewing out fire along with a long conveyer belt, make it and you must take on T-1000 again, so pray you have some ammo left. The best way to take him out is to hit him in the knees until he disappears. Continue on. Go up the barrels and jump from ledge to ledge. Go up the next 2 set of stairs, and jump to the next platform to reach one of the harder jumps in the level. You will see a platform on a chain hanging from the ceiling which is moving up and down. To make this jump and not fall to your death in the pit of lava below, you must jump at the very moment the platform is at its lowest. If you don't make it and fall in the lava, you won't have to begin from the start again, but from the very area you died! But don't make a habit of dying as 4 or so lives can disappear very quickly..... Once on the platform jump over to the next ledge, where you will find..another platform! This can be quite tricky. The thing you have to remember with this jump is that it is not like the previous swinging platforms - it does not swing as far. So when you have got its maximum swing worked out pray that you don't fall in the lava and jump. If all went well, jump onto the yellow and black ledge. If you go right from this ledge, it leads to an extra life, but my advice, unless you are desperate is not to take it, because you cannot go back the way you came, you have to jump down and repeat those two deadly chain jumps. Back to the initial ledge. Head left onto the next ledge and jump, where you'll see another platform chain. Time your jump just like the others and you'll make it. Head up the next two set of stairs, and jump onto the yellow and black platform. Keep jumping to the next and head upstairs. Jump to the next ledge avoiding the fireballs, and again go up the next two set of stairs. Down to the conveyer belt watching out for lava and fireballs. Jump right to the yellow and black ledge. Jump to the next ledge and head up the two sets of stairs to see the last platform chain above another lava pit. This chain goes straight from left to right, making your jump just that tad easier. Time your jump just like the others and you'll make it. Jump off the platform chain to the ledge and head upstairs. Head left and jump to the following yellow and black ledges. You have reached the climax of the game. The final battle with the T-1000. Get ready, for this is by far the hardest part of the game, which will take many lives to master (I hope you preserved your lives!) You will probably have noticed by now the huge pots pouring the molten lava - these are the key to destroying the T-1000. Jump down on the ledge for the final battle. No Ammo? No matter! T-1000 is defeated by a series of jumping and punching while in midair. There is no other other way of explaining it. You will soon know if you are doing it right as instead of him disappearing and reappearing somewhere else, he will fall flat on his back. Continue to attack the scoundrel in this way until he falls into the molten lava spewing out of the huge pots on either side. As I said this is an extremely tough battle which takes time to master. Just don't expect to be beating this guy first try... When you do finally beat him you will get a nice scene of him falling to his doom and a screen stating "T-1000 Destroyed". But it's not over yet. You will by now have noticed a hook hanging above you. It has now been lowered. Jump on it and leap to the left ledge where Sarah and John are waiting for you. CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU HAVE BEATEN TERMINATOR 2 JUDGMENT DAY FOR THE NES!!! Prepare for the not bad ending considering the standards of other NES games. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* * 10.
