The statue states that the evil General Zod will use Metropolis as his base. It is up to Clark Kent (Superman) to fight for truth and justice and defeat Zod. Those of you familiar with the Superman II movie and the comic books know that General Zod is a native of the planet Krypton - as is Superman - and possesses the same powers on Earth that Superman does. Unlike Superman, Zod has a lust for power and is evil. ******************************************************************************* 2.0 - Controls Left arrow: move left Right arrow: move right Down arrow: move downward (climb ladders, enter doors & change in booths) Up arrow: move upward (climb ladders and jump) B button: use your equipped item power A button: attack, talk to people Start: bring up list of item powers Select: bring up map (Superman's shield logo indicates your position) NOTICE: your position on the map is not revealed if you are underground or inside a building. ******************************************************************************* 3.0 - Kryptonite crystals Blue crystals: increases your health Red crystals: decreases your health Green crystals: decreases your health If your health meter runs too low, you will automatically change from Superman to Clark Kent. Clark Kent is not only Superman's alter-ego and human identity, he is also a weaker form in this game. When you are Clark Kent, enemies take more hits before they die. If you are transformed into Clark Kent form, look for enemies to kill so that you may stock up on blue crystals to replenish your energy. Once you have enough energy, you will be able to use a changing location to change back into Superman again. While you are in Clark Kent form, you will be unable to use your item powers. ******************************************************************************* 4.0 - Item powers and how to use them X-Ray Vision: use to see invisible ghosts Super Flight: use to fly through the sky Super Spin: use to spin through ground and enter sewers Heat Vision: use to shoot lasers from Superman's eyes and attack enemies Super Breath-1: use to put out fires Super Breath-2: use to freeze zombies (then attack them) Note on all powers: you cannot use any item powers while you are Clark Kent. Notes on Super Flight: pressing B will let you fly into the sky to view a list of destinations on your map. Destinations marked with yellow dots are places you can fly to at that time. You cycle through the destinations by pressing the A button; when you highlight the destination you want, press the start button to fly there. The less Super Flight power you have, the shorter your possible flight distances are. You cannot use super flight while you are underground or inside a building. If you decide you do not want to fly anywhere, press select to return to the ground. If you hold the up arrow and press B while Super Flight is equipped, you will fly straight up into the air and attempt to land on a rooftop. To my knowledge, there are only two buildings in this game on which you can land on the rooftop: they are Government Tower (located in McKeesport) and Mercantile (located in CBD). ******************************************************************************* 5.0 - Walkthrough Each level is broken up into units here at section 5.0 of this guide. For example, level one's walkthrough will be found at 5.1 and level two's walkthrough will be found at 5.2 and so on and so forth... ******************************************************************************* 5.1 - LEVEL ONE walkthrough Attack power: 120 Defense power: 100 You begin the game inside the Daily Planet (located in McKeesport) as Clark Kent. Lois Lane tells you that strange things are happening in Metropolis Park and you can press select to bring up your map. If you get the power-up at the Government Tower (see section 6.0 for details), you will see your first clue from an enemy. When you defeat him, he exclaims, "How dare you! I'll tell my boss at the Appollo Theater in Metropolis Park." As you continue heading right towards Metropolis Park, you encounter a sign which reads "Help" at a doorway. Defeat the enemies inside here to rescue the jeweler and receive a power-up. Keep heading right until you find the Appollo Theater. Once inside the Appollo Theater, use Super Breath-2 to freeze the zombies and then attack them. Upon defeating the zombies on each floor, you will receive power-ups. Continue down to the bottom floor for the boss battle. You will hear the music change once you reach the bottom floor. Advance carefully so that you may defeat the henchmen first. After you eliminate the henchmen, go further left until you see the boss. Although she jumps high, she moves somewhat slowly and wields a green whip-like object. Attack her with punches and Heat Vision until she is defeated. ******************************************************************************* 5.2 - LEVEL TWO walkthrough Attack power: 250 Defense power: 120 Talk to Jimmy Olsen to receive a subway pass. Now you are able to ride the Subway to reach those previously inaccessible areas on the map. At the start of level two, the Metropolis economy is in a panic as stock market prices have fallen. Lois Lane advises you that you will learn about stocks at the Senneville Stock Market; therefore, you should head for Senneville. Senneville's Stock Market is located to the left of the S in Senneville. Speak to the people inside the Stock Market. One of the people in there will tell you that the people at the Fish Market in Old City are worried about stocks. Another person will tell you that the Glernmorgan Square in Mt. Royal is also in a slump. The F.B.I. will tell you that the Dragon's Gang caused the slump. If you cannot fly to Old City, then go to the next screen left of the Stock Market. In this park, you will see a ladder that leads to the underground. Go down this ladder and travel through the underground passage to reach Old City. If you can fly to Old City, then use your Super Flight to fly to Old City. Upon landing in Old City, enter the Fish Market (it is immediately to your right). Defeat the little Chinese men in here to receive a power-up for Super Breath-1. After you exit the Fish Market, talk to the two men you just rescued. One of them tells you that the Dragon's Gang are going to set fire to One Lexcorp Plaza (located in Lafayette). Fly to Lafayette if you can. If you cannot fly to Lafayette, then you must go underground and find your way back to Senneville (unless you can fly to Senneville). To reach Lafayette from Senneville, take the ladder that leads to the underground passage (immediately to the right of the Stock Market and the phone booth in Senneville). The paths underground are straightforward; use every ladder you see and you will arrive in Lafayette. Once in Lafayette, go to One Lexcorp Plaza (located under the F in Lafayette). Inside One Lexcorp Plaza, use Super Breath-1 to put out the fires and receive a power-up for Super Spin. After exiting One Lexcorp Plaza, talk to the two people you just rescued. The man on the right will inform you that the Dragon's Gang are prepared to rob Metropolis Bank (located in Senneville). Fly to Senneville. Travel left until you reach Metropolis Bank (located above the first E in Senneville). Enter and defeat the enemies. One enemy gives a clue by asking you, "Do you like Chinese noodles?" Another says, "Don't look for the Dragon, it's useless!" You then receive a power-up for X-Ray Vision. Exit Metropolis Bank and talk to the man you rescued. He will ask you to take the criminals to the Police Station in Teaboro. Fly to Teaboro; if you are unable to fly, just walk right until you find the subway path that leads to Teaboro. Enter the Police Station in Teaboro (located to the left of the Subway path in Teaboro). Talk to the police officers; one will thank you for capturing the Dragon's Gang. Exit the police station and walk right until you find the building known as China Garden. Enter China Garden. Once inside China Garden, advance with caution so that you do not get overwhelmed by the enemies. Defeat the little Chinese men one at a time and keep going right to fight the Dragon. Attack the Dragon with punches and Heat Vision. After defeating the Dragon, you have completed level two. ******************************************************************************* 5.3 - LEVEL THREE walkthrough Attack power: 440 Defense power: 220 You begin level three as Clark Kent inside the Daily Planet. A professor was kidnapped during a lecture, and he is one of the top scientists. Lois Lane informs you that there are two colleges in Metropolis. They are Nordham University (located in Mt. Royal) and Metropolis University (located in Andersonville). Jimmy Olsen informs you that ghosts have been seen at both colleges. Fly to Mt. Royal. Upon landing in Mt. Royal, walk right to the next screen and you will be at Nordham University. Use your X-Ray Vision to see the invisible ghosts. Defeat the ghosts to receive a power-up for Heat Vision. If you see regular bad guys and not ghosts, then it is because you already completed this part on a previous level (see the power-ups in section 6.0 for details). Fly to Andersonville. Upon landing in Andersonville, the F.B.I. will be to your left. Talk to them. They inform you that the police may know something about the kidnapped professor. Time to head over to Teaboro. If you cannot fly to Teaboro, then just keep walking left until you find the subway path that leads to Teaboro. Once in Teaboro, enter the Metro Police Station and talk to the officer. He informs you that someone saw a man near Centennial Park that looked like the kidnapped professor. After talking to the officer, a Help sign flashes in Centennial Park. If you cannot fly to Centennial Park, then take the subway path that leads to it. Once you are in Centennial Park, go left until you see a ladder that leads to an underground passage. Climb down this ladder. Once you are underground, go right and skip the first ladder; keep going right until you come across a second ladder. Climb down this ladder. After climbing down that ladder, go right until you see another ladder. Climb down this ladder. You should now see the missing professor on your screen. Talk to him and he will inform you that Jay Falk forced him to put an evil mind into a huge computer. He issues a dire warning that something must be done, or Loss Webster (perhaps he meant "Ross Webster" or "or else Webster") will control the computers of the world! Now to make your way out of the underground passage... first, climb up the ladder and go left. Climb up the first ladder you see. After climbing up, now go left as far as you can. Climb up the ladder furthest to the left and you are now out of the underground passage. You must now go to the Computer Center in Metropolis Park (located above the E in Metropolis Park). Enter the Computer Center. Defeat the enemies on the first floor to receive a power-up for Super Spin. Go right to the next screen and you will see a "green fence" background. Destroy the little things that you see and you will receive a clue which reads, "To destroy the computer, break in and attack the center." Go left and fall down to the next floor. Defeat the enemies on this floor to receive a power-up for Super Flight. Go right and fall down to the next level. Advance with caution and defeat the enemies. Then go all the way to the left and you will see the huge computer. You will not survive long against its lasers; therefore, you must run up to it and try to jump into the middle where there is an opening. Once inside the opening, attack the center with your punches to destroy it. After destroying the huge computer, it will release its control of Metro Tower and you will receive a power-up for Heat Vision. Now go all the way back up to the top floor and exit the Computer Center. Upon exiting the Computer Center, go right until you reach the building known as Metro Tower (it's a very short trip). Enter Metro Tower. Once inside Metro Tower, go right until you see an elevator door. Go into it. Now fall down to the next floor. Defeat the enemies here to receive a power-up for Super Breath-1. Keep falling down to the next floor. Each floor has power-ups available for you (see section 6.0 for details). Once you finally fall down to the bottom floor, advance with caution and defeat the henchmen first. Then go all the way to the left to fight Jay Falk. You can attack Falk with punches and Heat Vision. Once he is defeated, that concludes level three. ******************************************************************************* 5.4 - LEVEL FOUR walkthrough Attack power: 580 Defense power: 460 Upon the start of level four, Lois Lane will advise you to go to the McKeesport Art Museum (which had been robbed). Upon exiting the Daily Planet, go right until you locate the McKeesport Art Museum (located under the S in McKeesport). Enter the museum. The F.B.I. informs you that Lex (Luthor) apparently failed in making the monster. His monster apparently broke into three fire beasts. The F.B.I. tells you to find the three fire beasts and then meet at the Metro Police Staion (station). In the interest of sparing you from the tedious task of wandering all over Metropolis, here are the locations of the three fire beasts. Fire beast 1: inside University Plaza (Staunton) Fire beast 2: inside Palace Disco (Andersonville) Fire beast 3: outside Civic Center (Teaboro) Defeat the blue fire beasts with your attacks and then meet the F.B.I. at the Metro Police Station in Teaboro. You can defeat these three beasts in any order; however, I recommend saving the Civic Center beast in Teaboro for last. The Palace Disco is located above the I in Andersonville. After defeating the three blue fire beasts, go to the Metro Police Station in Teaboro. The F.B.I. informs you that Lex (Luthor) is hiding under Central Station. Central Station is located in CBD. Once you arrive at Central Station in CBD, go left until you see an odd-shaped part of the ground. Use the Super Spin here to go through it and underground. Once underground, go right and jump over the water. Keep going right until you hit a dead end. Climb down the ladder. After climbing down the ladder, go right and climb down this ladder too. Now go left and climb down the first ladder you see. Go right and jump over the water. Keep going right until you see a ladder. Climb up the ladder and keep climbing up every ladder you see until you reach Lex Luthor. You will defeat Lex Luthor with a relentless attack of punches and Heat Vision. After defeating Lex Luthor, level four is concluded. ******************************************************************************* 5.5 - LEVEL FIVE walkthrough Attack power: 900 Defense power: 720 At the start of level five, Lois Lane informs you that the B.G. Bros. called and are waiting for you at Senneville Battery Park. So it is time to fly to Senneville. Remember all those power-ups I was telling you about in previous levels? There was a reason I dedicated an entire section just to power-ups: because this is the final level in the game and it will push your item powers to their limits! You will find yourself using X-Ray Vision often on this level and you must have enough flight power to fly to Freedom Island at the end of this level. Fly to Senneville and visit the B.G. Bros. in Battery Park (the leftmost part of Senneville). They will inform you that the boss is hiding under Metropolis Park. Head for Metropolis Park. You can fly there or run there. Either way, just make sure you replenish your Super Flight power so that you have enough to fly to Freedom Island later. If you can find any screens where there are no enemies (just people) and a doorway, then use that to your advantage. For example, Hunter Jewelry (located in McKeesport) is in what I call a "safe zone." There are no invisible ghosts in this area. There are people in this area and you can enter Hunter Jewelry to fight regular enemies to replenish whatever it is you need to replenish. When you are ready to continue going forward, head for the second O in Metropolis Park. Find the spot where you use Super Spin, and use it to go underground. Once you are underground, use X-Ray Vision to see the invisible ghosts. Go right until you see a ladder. Climb down the ladder. After climbing down the ladder, use X-Ray Vision to see more invisible ghosts, go left and climb down the ladder. After climbing down that ladder, use X-Ray Vision to see the invisible cat ghosts. Keep going right until you hit a dead end. Climb up that ladder. After climbing up that ladder, use X-Ray Vision to see the invisible jelly ghosts. Go right and climb up the ladder. After climbing up the ladder, use X-Ray Vision to see the invisible cat ghost. Defeat the cat ghost and the jelly ghost. The jelly ghost will tell you, "Our boss is waiting for us at Freedom Island." The little blob even threatens you by telling you that the game is over for you. Now it is time to head back out of the underground passage. Let's start by climbing back down the ladder. From this point forward, use your X-Ray Vision on every screen in the underground passage. After you climb back down the ladder, go left and climb down another ladder. After climbing down the ladder, go as far to the left as you can and climb up the ladder. After climbing up the ladder, go right and climb up again. Now go left as far as you can and jump up to get out of the underground passage. You are now back in Metropolis Park! If you can fly to Freedom Island, now is the time to do it. If you cannot, then you must travel west until you are close enough to do it. If necessary, be sure to replenish your Super Flight, energy or other item powers. If you are going to hoof it on foot, then you better be sure to have plenty of X-Ray Vision power handy. Once you are at Freedom Island, enter through the doorway. Go right and jump up to the next floor. On this floor, you will fight Ursa, the female member of General Zod's gang. Defeat her and then go right and jump up to the next floor. On this floor, you will fight Non, the brute of General Zod's gang. You must defeat Non (who looks like the monster from Frankenstein in this game) and go right and jump up to the final floor. On this floor, you will face the evil tyrant, General Zod himself! After you defeat Zod, he will be joined by Ursa and Non as you cast them into space as they are sealed away in the Phantom Zone. Congratulations! You have completed the game. The Statue of Freedom thanks you for your efforts and reminds you that you must always fight for justice and freedom forever. ******************************************************************************* 6.0 - Power-ups and rooftop encounters NOTICE: some locations are impossible for you to reach on level one without flying. You are unable to ride the subway on level one; therefore, you will need Super Flight to reach some locations on the first level. Some of these power-ups I located on level one might actually be available in later stages of the game; however, I took the liberty of searching for them on level one so that you may power up as much as possible and as soon as possible. On level one, look for Government Tower in McKeesport. When you find Government Tower, move a bit to the left of the doorway and equip Super Flight. With Super Flight equipped, fly straight up (B and Up) to land on the rooftop. Kill the enemies on the rooftop to receive a power-up for Super Breath-2. On level one, find Jewels By Alexander (located under the T in McKeesport). There will be a HELP sign appearing over the doorway. Enter through the door. Kill the enemies inside to rescue the jeweler and receive a power-up for Super Breath-2. When you exit through the door, the grateful jeweler thanks you for rescuing him. While in CBD, travel all the way to the left to find the building known as Mercantile. Position yourself directly atop the red sign and fly straight up (B and up) to land upon the rooftop. Use Super Breath-2 to freeze the zombie and then attack the zombie. Unfortunately, no power-up is provided. On level one, go to Nordham University (located at the R in Mt. Royal) and use X-Ray Vision to see the invisible ghosts. Defeat all of the ghosts to receive a power-up for Heat Vision. For a better chance of defeating each ghost so they do not roam off-screen, go to the next screen at the right and then come back. Use the X-Ray Vision now and defeat the ghosts. On level one, go to Glernmorgan Square (located in Mt. Royal, under the R in Centennial Park on the map). Enter through the doorway which has two cats pictured above it and use your X-Ray Vision to see the invisible ghosts. Defeat the ghosts to receive a power-up for Super Spin. On level one, go to Mountain Records (located at the D in Andersonville). Defeat the enemies here to receive a power-up for Super Breath-1. On level one, go to the Firemen's Memorial Museum (located at the dot on the map located in Teaboro) and enter through the doorway. Use Super Breath-1 to put out the fires and receive a power-up for Heat Vision. On level one, go as far to the left as you possibly can in Senneville. You will be in a park. Defeat the enemy here and he will say, "I will never snatch anything again!" You then receive a power-up for Super Flight. On level one, go to the Appollo Theater (located at the S in Metropolis Park). Use Super Breath-2 on the zombies and defeat them to receive a power-up for Super Spin. Drop down to the next level and defeat these zombies to receive a power-up for X-Ray Vision. Drop down yet another level and defeat the red zombies to receive a power-up for Super Flight. On level two, go to the Fish Market (located in Old City) and defeat the small Chinese men in the Fish Market to receive a power-up for Super Breath-1. On level two, go to One Lexcorp Plaza in Lafayette (located under the F in Lafayette) and enter. Put out the fires with Super Breath-1 to receive a power-up for Super Spin. On level two, go to Metropolis Bank in Senneville (located above the first E in Senneville) and enter. Defeat the enemies to receive a power-up for X-Ray Vision. On level three, go to the Computer Center in Metropolis Park (located above the E in Metropolis Park). Defeat the enemies on the first floor to receive a power-up for Super Spin. Fall down to the next floor and defeat those enemies to receive a power-up for Super Flight. Fall down another level and defeat the enemies and the huge computer to receive a power-up for Heat Vision. On level three, go to Metro Tower in Metropolis Park. Once inside, go right until you see an elevator door. Go into it. Now fall down to the next floor. Defeat the enemies here to receive a power-up for Super Breath-1. Now fall down to the next floor. Defeat the enemies here to receive a power-up for X-Ray Vision. Now fall down to the next floor yet again. Defeat these enemies to receive a power-up for Super Spin. Once again, fall down another floor. Defeat these enemies to receive a power-up for Super Flight. Fall down to the next floor again. Defeat these enemies to receive a power-up for Super Breath-1. On level four, go inside University Plaza (located in Staunton) and fall down to the bottom floor. Defeat the blue fire beast to receive a power-up for Super Breath-2. On level four, go inside the Palace Disco in Andersonville (located above the I in Andersonville). Defeat the blue fire beast to receive a power-up for Heat Vision. On level four, go to the rightmost part of Teaboro and defeat the blue fire beast to receive a power-up for X-Ray Vision. ******************************************************************************* 7.0 - Odd things It appears to be impossible for me to reach Newtown, Pelham and Racine on level one. I was able to venture to other Subway-accessible areas by flying to them; however, I never had the option to fly to Newton, Racine or Pelham on the first level. To my knowledge, there are only two buildings in the entire game on which you can land upon the roof. They are Government Tower (McKeesport) and Mercantile (CBD). Upon completing level one, the Daily Planet (listed as Dailey Planets in game) headline reads, "SUPERMAN DEFEATS ZOD GANG." This is strange because General Zod and his henchmen do not show up until later in the game. In Racine, talk to the woman who says, "The souvenirs are so cheap! I want to buy lots of them." See the squares next to you and the woman that look like windows as you walk by them on the ground? After talking to that woman, walk right and pass that first square, then stand atop the second square you see to your right from that woman. Press down on that square as if it were a door. Oddly, it acts as a doorway! Exit through the doorway you just entered. Now you are somehow transported to Pelham! ******************************************************************************* 8.0 - Thanks * DC Comics for creating Superman * First Star Software Inc. for their involvement in this game * Kemco for their involvement in this game * Nintendo of America Inc. for the release of this game on the NES * General Zod for not asking gamers to kneel before him on the final level * Anybody involved with the project for the release of Superman on the NES * GameFAQs for publishing my walkthrough/guide * The readers who take the time to read this guide and use its information ******************************************************************************* 9.0 - Copyright This walkthrough/guide is the intellectual property of its author and is protected by Copyright law.
