INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Sugoro Quest: Dice no Senshi Tachi' for the NES, a board game RPG released by Technos Japan in 1991. Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== At the start of the game, choose which log you want to keep track of your progress. Basics: ``````` The map of the game is like a boardgame. You move after rolling a die (singular of 'dice' in case you are lost already), depening on the face value. After moving, an event happens. This may be a battle or even story event. When you land on an empty square, you have a random encounter. In the battle you also roll a die. The rolls depend on the character, some are good at attack and some good at magic. Calling a diceman helps you defeat an opponent, depending on the number of the diceman. Finally, you can also try to flee from a battle. You start each stage with a basic HP, but can increase it temporarily with items, spells or drinking water from lakes. Battles: ```````` During battle, each side throws a die. The higher number gets to do the desired action, whether it is attack or magic. Even healing can fail if the magic die is lower value than your opponent's. The strength of an attack is also depending on how much you beat the opponent in the throw. If you have 4 and the other person 1, then your attack rate is three times higher, but not exactly three times more damage is being dealt. In the event of a tie, the dice are rolled again. Eventually one person will win, and gets to attack for the number of ties as well as each attack being the rate of the die value. Using items does not require rolling the dice. Note that the battle dice can have values up to 9, whereas the map dice is fixed at 1 to 6. Dicemen: ```````` There are six dicemen to your disposal. You call them at random with a roll of your die. The higher the number the better the help. They not only have different attack ranges but can also do special attacks as you might have seen by the opponent's diceman. Heroes Guild: ````````````` At the main castle you have several options in-between stages: - Talk to the king about your past/new assignments and game hints. - Buy and sell items from the shop. - Buy and sell tools, such as weapons, armor and shields. - Save your progress. - Check your status as well as equipping new tools. - Start the next quest. You can see which areas the individuals will grow and gain extra attack dice power. For a growth of the stats, check the experience chart. You eventually need to switch between characters to progress so leaving all but one on Level 1 is not ideal, but you may always replay completed quests to build up the stats. It is also a good idea to farm money with a leveled up character to buy equipment for a lower level one so they can survive a quest easier. FIGHTER Str. 7 Int. 4 End. 8 Attack: 9 Defense: 12 Flea Sword, Kesai Armor, Crockery Shield A. Dice: 1-3 M. Dice: 1-1 Comments: Good to fight and can support himself with some basic spells. DWARF Str. 9 Int. 1 End. 10 Attack: 12 Defense: 15 Rusty Axe, Thick Clothes, Crockery Shield A. Dice: 1-4 M. Dice: 1-1 Comments: A dumb tank, absolutely no spells so you need to rely on brute force and items to heal. ELF Str. 3 Int. 14 End. 4 Attack: 6 Defense: 11 Wonder Staff, Thick Clothes, Crockery Shield A. Dice: 1-3 M. Dice: 1-4 Comments: Great supply of spells early on already and quite weak to attack. Uses staves. HALF ELF Str. 4 Int. 11 End. 6 Attack: 9 Defense 10 Wood Bow, Clothes, Crockery Shield A. Dice: 1-3 M. Dice: 1-3 Comment: Uses both magic and attack pretty well. The dice magic on the map help you greatly to land on specific locations providing you have enough MP handy. =============================================================================== 03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300 =============================================================================== As you begin you quest, you are introduced to your four heroes: the fighter, the dwarf, the elf and half elf. You start the game with 200 gold pieces. Use it to buy an elixir to revive in case you need it and the rest on some better equipment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 1: JOURNEY G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legend: ``````` SS Start EXIT Finish RR Return [] Fight () Lake A+ Armor+ W+ Weapon+ S+ Shield+ $$ Town && Person ["""] Castle [***] Boss START [] [] $$ [] [] [] [] ["""] A+ [] () () [] [] () RR [] [] [] () [] [] () () W+ () [] /\ [] [] $$ -> A+ () [] () W+ [] [] [] $$ [] [] [] [] && [] [] [] [] () EXIT [] <- [***] [] <- () [] $$ \/ [] [] () () [] () () [] The man in the first house you get to will give you a letter. Give this to the king in the next castle you arrive at. At the next village you get nothing but good luck. As this is the first stage, here are some tips you get strong. Try to level up your character to at least level 3. Land on lots of lakes to refresh, and get those equipment boosts. Of course it's all luck with the dice at the moment. Soon there is the first boss already so use a return spell or item BOSS: Goblin King He cheats like hell, often upgrading his die value or just throwing it at you to know out the character. His attacks can be lethal at low levels. If you are level 3 or higher you can probably beat him easily. If you lose, you can revive your character and continue on the lower path. Then if you get to the second village a man will ask if you wish to return to the castle or try beating the goblin king again. Pick what you think is best. After beating the goblin king, step on the Finish! to complete the first stage. You may want to replay this stage a few times with different characters. The boss alone drops 150 gold pieces. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 2: WORRIED G0320 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legend: ``````` START Start EXIT Finish RR Return [] Fight () Lake A+ Armor+ W+ Weapon+ $$ Town && Person *# Cave (# number) XX Curse @# Warp (# number) ["""] Castle [***] Boss [] [] [] *1 1* [] () () [] [] [] [] [] && && && && [] () [] && $$ -> [] \/ ## \/ && [] [] () [] [] () && () [] [] \/ () && () W+ XX () /\ $$ /\ XX [] && W+ @1 XX && [] [] () () [] [] () [] [] [] [] START [] @1 [] () [] -> () [] [] [***] -> [] [] [] [] \/ [] *2 [] [] [] () () [] <- $$ [] RR [] XX [] [] <- $$ [] A+ () [] () W+ [] [] [] *2 \/ [] [] [] [] [] () [] [] [] () -> [] ["""] [] [] [] [] [] -> [] () () [] \/ RR [] <- $$ [] [] () [] <- [***] [] [] \/ EXIT [] [] [] [] The first town you get to ask for your help in defeating monsters. If you agree to help then you get to walk along the path with the many people giving you items such as amulets and healing boosts. Otherwise you will walk on the shorter right path but but I highly suggest taking the valuable items instead. The next town will tell you about a monster called Waver, who we will meet soon enough. Soon you will enter a cave with 100G. At the next town a guy will ask you if you think you have earned enough experience points. If you say 'no' you will enter the loop towards the west side which is filled with curse tiles that will reduce your HP. You better say 'yes', plus you get some HP from the elder. The first of the next two 'people' panels talks about bait, whereas the second actually gives you some. It's very useful to get a free turn against an enemy. At the tower you need to fight the first boss. BOSS: Waver She looks more like a girl in a bear costume. Her HP is not that high but her claws are mighty tough. Fireball seems very weak against her, so if you use magic then use Missile instead. Along the next stretch of road the village will wait for the Elf. If you are not then you simply make short-cut to the castle. As the Elf you take the long route through the cave where you find a Magic Staff. Equip it if you did not purchase this already. After the events at the castle you will soon hit the mountain with the second boss. BOSS: Lich His attacks include SlowDice, which means your won't be able to throw dice well. The normal attack is not so damaging but he does seem to have a pretty high average roll. The Elf might have some trouble if you run out of MP. If you lose then an elixir will take you to the route behind the mountain as before, otherwise finish up the stage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 3: BEACH G0330 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legend: ``````` SS Start EXIT Finish RR Return [] Empty ~~ Coast () Lake A+ Armor+ S+ Shield+ W+ Weapon+ $$ Town *# Cave (# number) XX Curse @# Warp (# number) ["""] Castle [***] Boss @3 [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] <- [] [] [] [] ~~ [] [] [] $$ -> [] RR ~~ [] ~~ \/ /\ [] $$ [] \/ [***] [] ~~ EXIT <- [***] [] [] [] [] [] ~~ [] @3 [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] <- [] [] [] ~~ ~~ XX /\ [] [] () [] $$ -> [] () (4) $$ -> [] \/ [] [] (3) [] [] [] [] [] [] /\ [] [] [] [] ~~ $$ $$ [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] @1 [] [] [] @2 [] [] [] [] [] [] ~~ () [] [] [] @1 [] ~~ () $$ [] () [] [] [] [] -> [] [] [] [] [] [] ~~ [] () [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] @2 [] [] ~~ ~~ ~~ [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] $$ () XX /\ /\ [] [] [] [] ~~ $$ [] $$ -> W+ A+ [] [] [] $$ (2) [] [] () () [] [] () [] [] [] [] [] () () [] [] [] [] [] () /\ [] <- $$ (1) [] $$ [] [] XX [] () () () [] [] [] A+ [] [] S+ [] [] [] [] [] () W+ () () ["""] [] () () A+ START The castle is already a few steps away. Inside the king will tell you about the fish and that you need a boat. The next village only says his boat is broken, but you are looking for this person called Garin. Soon you will reach a village (1) where the guy asks if you are scared of what is up ahead. If you say 'yes' you will read a village where they give you a fish. The fish possibly results in gaining a Magic Armor later on. As you have no boat at the moment, swimming is the only option. It will take some damage each time you stop, as well as having to battle the foes here. If you have spells or items to control the dice rolls, it's possible to arrive at the other side within 2 turns. The swimming damage depends on your character, so as Dwarf you will have larger deficit than as Elf. At the next town (2) you get to chose if you wish to take the old boat or continue on foot. The boat route is at the north, whereas the other is east and means another round of swimming. I strongly suggest you take the boat. On the boat you recover HP like a lady told you earlier on. You boat sinks soon as you go around the northwest bend. After you lose the old boat, a warp is coming up very soon. Use any item or spell to make your character land on this spot. If you miss it, read the "no warp" route. [see additions below the no warp route] WARP ROUTE: You warp to the small span of ocean higher up north. On the center tile, a fairy will give you a fairy boat which will last until the end of the map. As you warp to the next destination, navigate to the shore and enter the fairy town. A fairy will give you a compass. Journey across the seas until you reach yet another town. The compass comes in handy as you continue north. In the loop you need to land on the warp yet again which takes you to the very far northwest corner of the map. Arrive at the shore and trade in the compass for a valuable bait. What's left is a small trip to the boss' hideout. NO WARP ROUTE: Let's say you didn't make it on the first warp, you have to continue your journey without a boat until you reach the next village (3). Without the fairy ship you also don't have a compass, so the girl will show you the way east. The next village (4) has Garin you have been looking for all this time. If you have the fish from earlier you get a trip to the caves. The cave has a Magic Armor. Either of Garin's boat will sink soon after you start the sea journey. Swim to the village near the shore, tell the man you do not want to return to the castle and then swim the rest of the way to the boss' hideout. === Robert Starphoenix has the following to add: If you do NOT have the fish there is a 10% chance the girl at the town will take the compass and boat and call you a thief. If you DO have the fish, there is a 99% chance she will take the boat and the compass and call you a thief. If she DOES take the fairy boat and compass, you're forced to go to Garin's town and get his Bad Boat and go around the long way swimming. If she does NOT take the compass, then you will move north and eventually get to the town where the bait is and keep the fairy boat until you defeat Kraken or leave the map via escape or death. All credit goes to him for checking this part more thoroughly! === BOSS: Krakken Not exactly the sea monster I was expecting. Has high amounts of HP, and likes to heal with medicine. Again, if you lose and have an elixir then you can return to the village with the choice to try again or return to the castle. When you beat the boss, it's a very short trip to the finish line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 4: FOREST G0340 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legend: ``````` SS Start EXIT Finish RR Return [] Empty () Lake A+ Armor+ S+ Shield+ W+ Weapon+ $$ Town && Person "" Sign @# Warp (# number) ["""] Castle [***] Boss SS [] [] [] $$ [] () [] () () [] A+ [] [] [] [] [] && () && [] ["""] $$ (1) [] [] [] [] $$ () [] () [] [] && && [] () [] [] \/ [] [] $$ [] S+ [] @1 [] [] <- $$ -> [] [] (2) [] () @1 () [] [] [] [] () \/ $$ \/ \/ $$ \/ () (3) (4) [] [] [] [] /\ [] [] [] [] () [] [] $$ (5) [] [] [] \/ \/ $$ \/ \/ $$ \/ $$ -> [] () (6) (7) (8) [] [] [] [] \/ [] S+ [] [] [] [] [] () [] [] [] [] () [] [] [] @2 @1 @1 @1 @1 @1 [] [] [] @2 [] [] [] () [] () A+ [] [] ["""] [] ["""] [] [] [] () $$ [] && && [] W+ [] [] [] [] [] () [] [] [] [] [] "" [] [] $$ [] [] @1 $$ [] [] [] [] [] () [] [] () [] [] "" [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] $$ [] [] () [] W+ [] () "" [] () [] [] () () [] <- [] [] [] [] [] [] [***] /\ [***] -> [] EXIT $$ -> [] [] RR \/ [] [] [] () () [] () [] [] The start of the quest is very linear. In the second town (1) you get a shoe from a girl we are looking for. The teacher at the castle gives you an exam pass. Eventually you come to an examiner in the woods (2). He will ask you a question. Q: Which of these consumers more MP? A: Dice Drain If you get it correct as above, you take the right path. Otherwise you go left. The rest of the forest is pretty much the same now. Consult the map and continue to answer questions until you reach the castle. When you graduate with 100% you get a Faker Shield. Everyone can use it, so every character should try and go this route first. If not you can still sell it for close to 8,000 gold pieces. Here are the questions from the examiners: (3) Q: Which of these can be used in battle. A: Dice Grow (4) Q: Which spell will wear off first? A: Berserk (5) Q: Which spell is the same as Mirror? A: Holy Wall (6) Q: Which is the same as Wish Dice? A: Dice Call (7) Q: What level does Dwarf learn magic? A: 19 (8) Q: Is Hyper Heal or Change Heal stronger? A: Change Heal To progress the game, get 0 percent to land on the most western warp. Soon you reach a village where they found the second shoe. When you reach the sign you go straight, then get directions to go south. At the next sign you need to go west first, then return to the sigh and follow north. Too bad the lead was wrong, so return all the way south. The rest of the way is extremely linear once again. The last sign tells you what is in store up ahead. BOSS: Medusa Now there's a better boss design than before. As usual finish up the map or resurrect with an elixir and retry later. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 5: GATES G0350 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legend: ``````` SS Start EXIT Finish RR Return [] Empty () Lake A+ Armor+ S+ Shield+ W+ Weapon+ $$ Town && Person XX Curse *# Cave (# number) ["""] Castle [***] Boss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t the start of the quest there are some rich experience points to be earned from the Warlock. If you wish to build up your characters, take some Exits and perhaps Elixirs to be on the safe side. Play through the start until you reach around half way down on the west side and then return to the castle. If you had a look at the experience chart you might have noticed that the gap between the next levels does not keep on increasing, so every few thousand experience points will level you up very quickly. At the same time you will most likely farm tons of money, the max you can hold is 65535 by the way. As for the actual quest: The first path is very linear. When you reach the gate at the south the guard will tell you that you are not ready yet. Continue on the outer circle. You must land on the person (1) to receive a gate pass. On the second time you circle around, land on the tile with the person just before the gate (2). He will give you a pedestal. With both items you get the Writings from the person waiting on the east side (3). Use any kind of spells or items to make sure you do not have to loop around the outer circle forever. Finally, visit the town on the west side to exchange the items for the Skull Key. This will open the gate at the south side. The cave you come to has money in it, nice, let's move on. At the town you will try to open the gate but fail. Continue on the route and land on the person tile (4) to get the bump looked at. Next time you enter town the gate will open for you. What's left is to slay the boss. BOSS: Mechaman Make sure you are high enough levels to take him on, what's also very important is having invested into great weapons, armor and shields. After you beat the boss the fifth stage is complete. You might also consider throwing away all Cursed Rocks you pick up on the way. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 6: HELL G0360 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Speak to the King to start this stage. You can still return to the castle like during all the other quest. If you aren't max level yet then you will most likely be very soon, as these foes give you so much experience. After a short trip you already fight the first boss. BOSS: Lavalord High die values, shouldn't be too much of a problem if you were prepared. If you lose, resurrect the character and return to the village. Either try again or leave this dungeon. The next boss is already 2 rolls away. BOSS: Gold Dragon He hits very hard. Should you lose, a person has medicine if you can aim for the tile. You need to re-battle the previous boss and continue on from there to either the dragon again or the nearby town (by losing again). After the Gold Dragon, there are only a few steps for the final boss. Unfortunately as you enter his hideout your character will be captured. Repeat the above steps with another character until you reach the hideout again. BOSS: Hades Max HP, and pretty much the highest dice roller you will ever meet for both magic and attack. Use your best attacks and spells, this is the last battle so no need to keep an precious items stocked up either. Walk the rest of the path to see the Ending! You cannot use magic nor items anymore and all the character tiles just say you are a hero. =============================================================================== 04.) TOOLS G0400 =============================================================================== Tools are bought at the shop, for each member of your party. MAGIC G0500 =============================================================================== There are two kinds of spells, map (M) and battle (B). They are pretty self- explanitory as you can use one kind in the field and the other during a fight. Check the list to see how much MP they require and at what level a character will learn the spell. The magic spells are grouped by effect. ____________________________________________________________________ | Magic | MP | Fighter | Dwarf | Elf | Half Elf | |-------------------+----+----------+----------+----------+----------| | Heal (M) | 4 | 3 | 19 | 1 | 1 | | Heal (B) | 4 | | | | 1 | | Hi-Heal (M/B) | 7 | 25 | | 6 | 7 | | Hyper Heal (M/B) | 14 | | | 15 | 18 | | Change Heal (M/B) |ALL | | | 27 | 27 | | Retry (M) | 4 | 10 | 23 | 14 | 1 | | Return (M) | 1 | 8 | | 1 | | | Escape (B) | 99 | | | 17 | 20 | | Fireball (B) | 3 | 7 | | 1 | 2 | | Prominan (B) | 10 | 15 | | 8 | 11 | | Acid (B) | 20 | | | 21 | 15 | | Flood (B) | 30 | | | 25 | 23 | | Protect (B) | 20 | | 26 | 4 | 15 | | No Armor (B) | 20 | 22 | | | 8 | | Berserk (B) | 18 | 29 | | | 4 | | Missile (B) | 9 | | | 5 | | | Atombolt (B) | 15 | | | 12 | | | Dice Grow (B) | 20 | | | 7 | 14 | | Dice Drain (B) | 28 | 20 | | | 10 | | Dice Call (M) | 14 | | | 16 | 6 | | Holy Wall (B) | 28 | | | 8 | | | Paralize (B) | 12 | | 22 | 10 | | -------------------------------------------------------------------- Heal: ````` Recovers 15 HP. Hi-Heal: ```````` Recovers 35HP. Hyper Heal: ``````````` Recovers 50 HP. Change Heal: ```````````` Uses all remaining MP to recover as much HP as possible. Retry: `````` Two chances to roll the die. If the first one is not to your liking, simply re-roll. You must accept the second roll, however. Return: ``````` Returns to the Siland castle. It might look like a failure but you can do this to upgrade weapons from money you have earned and then retry from the beginning. It's better than dying and stat upgrades only start taking effect with a newly started quest. Escape: ``````` Escape from a battle without having to run thus no risk to get caught or return a few board tiles. Fireball: ````````` Attack with a fireball. Prominan: ````````` Stronger fire attack than fireball. Acid: ````` Strong acid attack. Flood: `````` Stronger acid attack. Protect: ```````` Increases defense. No Armor: ````````` Reduces the enemies' defense. Berserk: ```````` Doubles attack rate. Missile: ```````` Fires a missile attack. Atom Bolt: `````````` A stronger missile attack. Dice Grow: `````````` Improves your possible dice values during a fight. Dice Drain: ``````````` Reduces enemy's possible dice values during a fight. Dice Call: `````````` Pick what value to roll on the map. Holy Wall: `````````` Reduces damage from spells. Paralize: ````````` Paralizes the opponent's diceman. If you have a strong magic user, this helps to get a free attack every so often. =============================================================================== 06.)
