What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (1/25/04): The first version of this FAQ. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= In the early 1990's, a rather unique space flight simulator made it onto the NES in the form of Space Shuttle Project. There are 6 increasingly difficult missions in this game, ranging from a variety of space-related things to be done. The gameplay is pretty good for a game of this nature, though the controls could be a bit better on the spacewalk portions. I tried this game a while ago being somewhat of a space buff myself, and finally got to writing a guide for it, so enjoy! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Start: Pause game Seelct: Not used Control Pad: Move character in game, move cursor on name selection A: Perform commands as specified in game B: Perform commands as specified in game ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Mission Guide -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========================================= Mission 1: Release Surveillance Satellite ========================================= Stage 1 - Fuel and Board Shuttle -------------------------------- It's a simple touch and go segment; should be easy enough for everyone to get through. *Enter the elevator - Very self-explanatory; step into the box and hold Up to go up to the top platform. *Oxygen fuel switch on - On the top platform, go to the flashing switch and press A to trigger it. *Hydrogen fuel switch on - Go back down the elevator to the second highest platform (watch so you don't hit the blue oxygen tank moving in your path). Go to the flashing switch and press A to trigger it. *Open orbiter hatch - Go down the elevator again to the platform directly below. Go to the flashing switch and press A to open the hatch. *Board all crew members - Take the elevator all the way to the ground again (watch out for the blue hydrogen tank moving in your path). At the bottom, the pilot will join you. *Enter orbiter hatch - Ride the elevator with the pilot to the first platform and go into the open shuttle. Stage 2 - Space Shuttle Launch ------------------------------ The fun part of the mission; for each part of this stage, you will rely on a meter at the top part of your screen, so be ready! *Roll 120 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to roll. *Thrust - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one with the one you control as it moves around a few times, and you'll be fine. *SRB separation - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to separate the side boosters. *Thrust - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one with the one you control as it moves around a few times, and you'll be fine. *Main engine cut-off - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to cut-off the main engine. *ET separation - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to separate the large tank. *Fire OMS #1 - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one from left to right, and that's it. *Fire OMS #2 - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one from left to right, and that's it. *Open cargo doors - This will happen by itself after you start orbiting the Earth, so don't worry about it. Stage 3 - Extravehicular Activities ----------------------------------- Perhaps the most tricky part of this mission is the satellite release. You'll see why VERY soon! *Release satellite - You will be on a screen where you can release the large satellite by pressing A. There are other smaller ones floating around, which you can't hit or else you'll lose a life. There are also white balls, which you can pass through, gaining an extra life in the process. It's a bit tricky to launch the satellite though; try to stay on the left side as you go up (remember to use the Control Pad to slow down). Then when you see the group of small satellites moving from left to right, slide your satellite up and to the right, directly behind them. You'll then drop down while the satellite opens up; if you moved it far enough to the right, it should open up and begin orbit before something hits it. *Put satellite in orbit - See above. *Open solar panels - See above. Stage 4 - Reenter Atmosphere And Land ------------------------------------- This is very similar to Stage 2, so it shouldn't be too hard if you pay attention and time your button presses right. *Close cargo bay doors - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to close the cargo doors. *Roll orbiter 90 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. When the line passes in that space, hold Up to roll around. *Yaw orbiter 180 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. When the line passes in that space, hold Left to commence yaw. *Thrust - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one from left to right and that's it. *Yaw orbiter 180 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. When the line passes in that space, hold Right to commence another yaw. *Roll orbiter 90 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. When the line passes in that space, hold Up to roll around. *Pitch orbiter 28 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. When the line passes in that space, hold Left to set the pitch. *Brake - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one from left to right and that's it (you'll have to do this again after the first s-turn). *Track s-turn glide path - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to start the s-turns (you'll have to do this after the second braking as well). *TAEM approach to runway - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to begin the approach to the runway. *Flare - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. When the line passes in that space, hold Right to flare, slowing you down. *Landing gear down - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to lower the landing gear and land! *Brake - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one from left to right and that's it. =========================================== Mission 2: Start Space Station Construction =========================================== Stage 1 - Fuel and Board Shuttle -------------------------------- It's a simple touch and go segment; should be easy enough for everyone to get through. *Enter orbiter hatch - Ride the elevator with the pilot to the first platform and go into the open shuttle with him. You now have to repeat this twice, by bringing up the Mission/Payload Specialists as well. Simply follow the top one from left to right, and that's it. *Open cargo doors - This will happen by itself after you start orbiting the Earth, so don't worry about it. Stage 3 - Extravehicular Activities ----------------------------------- *Release MMU from shuttle - After the oxygen meter fills up, press A to exit the shuttle with a part in tow. *Take part to station - For this action scene, you'll have to control the man as he navigates around the station exterior. You have to move up/down to get around the gray walls. You'll notice sections of blocks similar to the one you hold with one missing. *Install part on station - When you find a spot with the missing part as explained above, slowly fly by it to place the part. *Repeat for all parts - Return to the cargo bay and grab the next part, and repeat. Keep in mind if you need oxygen, just touch the oxygen tanks hanging on a couple of the walls. *Return MMU to shuttle - After you brought out/installed the 4 parts, simply return to the cargo bay and you're done. Stage 4 - Reenter Atmosphere And Land ------------------------------------- This is very similar to Stage 2, so it shouldn't be too hard if you pay attention and time your button presses right. *Valves - There are 6 circles on the top meter; they will each light up in a certain order, then a cursor will appear. You now have to repeat this 4 times, by bringing up the Mission and Payload Specialists, as well as a Scientist and Engineer. Stage 2 - Space Shuttle Launch ------------------------------ The fun part of the mission; for each part of this stage, you will rely on a meter at the top part of your screen, so be ready! *Track - There will be a meter with a wavy line atop your screen. You'll then be in control of a small white blip as it slowly moves along. You must guide it along the wavy path as closely as possible from start to end. *Roll 120 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to roll. *Vernier - You'll have another meter on the top of your screen. A gap will move back and forth several times on the track, and the idea is to move the cursor up through that gap quickly so you don't hit the sides. If you're patient, the gap will slow down when moving, so you can do it easier. You have to this several times to continue. *Thrust - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Simply follow the top one with the one you control as it moves around a few times, and you'll be fine. *Valves - There are 6 circles on the top meter; they will each light up in a certain order, then a cursor will appear. Stage 3 - Extravehicular Activities ----------------------------------- *Release maneuvering unit - Simply press A to drop your man out of the cargo bay and into space. *Spacewalk to satellite - Basically, you just have to float around looking for the satellite as it orbits the Earth. There are space rocks that orbit as well; try not to hit them or else they'll knock you a distance away, taking from your oxygen supply. *Take satellite to orbiter - When you spot the satellite, pass over it to grab on, then float back under the shuttle and up into the cargo bay. *Release maneuvering unit - Press A again after you get into the cargo bay and fill up on oxygen to exit. *Put satellite into orbit - Float back up towards the Earth, making sure not to hit the space rocks, and the satellite will begin to orbit again. *Return maneuvering unit - Maneuver your man back into the cargo bay, and that will be all. Simply follow the top one from left to right and that's it. =========================================== Mission 5: Rescue Marooned Soviet Cosmonaut =========================================== Stage 1 - Fuel and Board Shuttle -------------------------------- It's a simple touch and go segment; should be easy enough for everyone to get through. *Enter orbiter hatch - Ride the elevator with the pilot to the first platform and go into the open shuttle with him. You now have to repeat this 5 times, by bringing up the Mission and Payload Specialists, as well as a Scientist, Engineer, and a Physician. *Gimbal - There are 2 light blue segments on the meter, with a thin line moving back and forth. When the line goes into the right area, hit A to send it back left; when it goes into the left one, hit B. Do this several times to proceed. *Valves - There are 6 circles on the top meter; they will each light up in a certain order, then a cursor will appear. Activate each of them in order to take care of the valves. *SRB separation - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to separate the side boosters. *Thrust - There will be 2 notches in the top meter; the upper one will move on its own while you have control of the bottom. Stage 3 - Extravehicular Activities ----------------------------------- *Release maneuvering unit - After the oxygen meter fills up, and there are no space rocks/satellites blocking the cargo bay, press A to release the man. *Spacewalk to spacecraft - It's a long journey upward to the Soviet cosmonaut stranded outside his station. Simply keep moving up while maneuvering to avoid hitting the rocks on the way. There is a small gray tank you'll see floating across along the way; touch it to refill your oxygen, should you need it. *Grab marooned cosmonaut - Once you reach the top of the screen, go around his station and touch him to grab on. *Return maneuvering unit - With the Soviet cosmonaut in tow, it's a matter of moving all the way downward again. Just watch out for the space junk and land in the cargo bay at the end. Activate each of them in order to take care of the valves. *Close cargo bay doors - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. Press A to stop it within that space to close the cargo doors. *Roll orbiter 90 degrees - A light blue segment will appear on the meter, then a thin line will move from left to right. When the line passes in that space, hold Left to set the pitch. *Align - In the cockpit, you'll see an outline of the shuttle in the meter above. It will move to the right slightly, so pull it back to the middle and hold A for a moment to partially turn. The outline will then move to the left, so repeat this a few times to start the burn. You have to move up/down to get around the gray walls. You'll notice sections of blocks similar to the one you hold with one missing. *Install part on station - When you find a spot with the missing part as explained above, slowly fly by it to place the part. This time, you'll have to go farther than before to install parts, including through an area with a red barrier; don't touch the red or else you'll lose a life. Also, further ahead there is a gap that opens and closes; don't get crushed under it when passing through! *Repeat for all parts - Return to the cargo bay and grab the next part, and repeat. Keep in mind if you need oxygen, just touch the oxygen tanks hanging on a couple of the walls. *Return MMU to shuttle - After you brought out/installed the 8 parts, simply return to the cargo bay and you're done.
