Legal Disclaimer/Contacting Me =============================================================================== i. Introduction =============================================================================== Hello and welcome to my FAQ for Soccer on the NES. Within this FAQ, I will outline all there is to this really short and simple game. There isn't a whole lot to see in the game of Soccer for the NES: it is the very first game for the system based on the sport, and with only a simple exhibition mode to choose and a handful of teams with no apparent differences bar their kit colours, this has become increasingly outdated and forgotten now that there are much bigger, deeper and better footy games out there, both on the same system, and newer ones. However, this is still at least playable and maybe worth a quick look if you want to see how far soccer games have come since this game's release in 1985; it is also available for download on the Wii Virtual Console. =============================================================================== 1. Here, you select your team, skill level and length of time for both of the match's two halves that comprise the whole game. After doing so, you are taken to the Game Screen to play your match against a random team controlled by the CPU. 2 PLAYER GAME: Should you have 2 controllers plugged into your system, selecting this mode will take you to the same Setup Screen; only difference is, the second player can also select their own team to control. Both players cannot select the same team. o--------------o | Setup Screen | o--------------o Once you have chosen your game type from the Title Screen, you are then taken to this screen. Here is what it looks like, and an outline of the selections available: +-----------------------------------------------------------+ |-----------------------------------------------------------| | +-------------------------+ | | | S E L E C T I O N S | | | +-------------------------+ | | | | -> T E A M S E L E C T | | O O | | -+- -+- | | / \[1] / \[2] | | USA GBR FRA FRG BRA JPN ESP | | | | +-+ | | S K I L L L E V E L |1| 2 3 4 5 | | +-+ | | +--+ | | H A L F T I M E |15| 30 45 | | +--+ | |-----------------------------------------------------------| +-----------------------------------------------------------+ TEAM SELECT: There are seven teams to choose from in this game (for their respective nations and kit colours, see the Teams section). By pressing Left and Right while Team Select is highlighted with the flashing blue arrow, a character model (with numbers 1/2 to denote which respective player has the team highlighted) appears over the team name. SKILL LEVEL: Pressing Left or Right on the D-Pad while you have this option highlighted will move the pink box around one of the five possible skill levels to choose from. They range from 1 to 5, 1 being easiest, and 5 being toughest. HALF TIME: Each game is divided into 2 equal halves; this option will allow you to change the amount of game minutes per half. One in-game minute is roughly equal to about 10 real-life seconds. A nice little feature in this game is that you are treated to a half-time show of 8-bit cheerleaders dancing around for a few seconds before the second half begins. In this game, teams do not swap sides of the pitch between halves. o-------------o | Game Screen | o-------------o After you have chosen your team, skill level and half time, pressing Start will then take you to the main game. Here is a diagram of what you'll see on-screen, and what everything is, explained below: +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | U S A 0 0 T I M E 1 5 : 0 0 0 0 E S P | |----------------------------------------------------------------------| |______________________________________________________________________| | O | | | -+- | | | O / \ | O O | | -+- | -+- -+- | | / \ | / \ / \ | | ____|____ | | _.-` | `-._ | | .` | [2]'. | | ( O + [1] O ) | | `-, -+- | O -+-,-' O | | `-/_\__|-+-_/_\ -+- | | |/ \(O) / \ | | | | | O | O | | -+- | -+- | | / \ | / \ | |__________________________________|___________________________________| | | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ Team and Score: Player 1's team initials and goals scored are displayed in the top-left corner of the screen, while Player 2's team/goals are displayed in the top-right corner. In a 1-Player Game, the CPU's team will display as 'CPU'. Time Remaining: Shown via the counter in the top-centre of the screen. At the beginning of each half of the match, this will start out at 15, 30 or 45 (whichever you selected from the Setup Screen), and gradually ticks down, with the half ending when it reaches zero. The clock is stopped whenever there is a stoppage for set-pieces. Controlled Player: The character currently being controlled by Player 1 will have a small number '1' appearing over their head; the character controlled by Player 2 has a number '2' appearing over their head. o------------------o | General Gameplay | o------------------o The team that gets to kick off at the beginning of the match is decided at random. The other team will get to kick off at the beginning of the second half. Each team has 6 players; 5 outfield players and a goalkeeper who wears a differently-coloured kit to distinguish them from outfield players. The player you control is denoted by a blinking number that appears above their head; for Player 1 this is a '1', for Player 2 in a 2-Player game, this is a '2'. When you wish to switch control to another player (when not in possession of the ball), pressing the B button will move the numbered cursor over another player's head. To dribble the ball, run into it, and when your player's feet touch the ball, they'll knock it a short distance ahead of them. When in possession of the ball, another player will have a number over their head; and by pressing B, you can make a pass over in their direction. Goalkeepers can be controlled with the D-Pad, and they will move around anywhere in their own area. It's a little tricky as they are controlled simultaneously while you are also controlling an outfield player. The best thing to do is to concentrate on your goalie if an opposing player has the ball and is attacking your goal, therefore you can keep an eye on where the ball is going and be in a good position to make a save. The timer starts at 15, 30 or 45 game minutes at the beginning of each half; whichever you selected in the Setup Screen. It ticks down continually, pausing only during stoppages, or if you press Start to pause the game. Once the first half finishes when the clock has elapsed, you'll get a brief half-time show of cheerleaders dressed in pink dancing on the pitch. Once the second half is finished, the winning team (i.e. whoever has scored more goals) will celebrate. If a game finishes in a draw, you can play a penalty shootout as a tiebreaker (see below). Once the game is decided, you are taken back to the Title Screen. Scoring ------- Scoring is done as simply shooting the ball into the opposing goal. Player 1 attacks the goal at the right-hand side of the playing area, while Player 2 or the CPU will attack the left-hand goal. When you're in possession and close enough to the opponent's goal when it is on-screen, you can attempt a shot. When you're within range, a flashing arrow appears on the goal-line. By pressing Up or Down on the D-Pad, this arrow will slide along the goal-line to indicate the area where your player will shoot. It's a bit of a pain as this means you'll have to control the player and the arrow at the same time. Look for the area of the goal you want to place the ball, and press the A button to shoot. If your positioning is good enough and the keeper is out of position, the ball should hopefully go past him and you will score! The words 'GOAL IN' will flash at the top of the screen, and you will have a point added on to your score counter. Set-Pieces ---------- Corner Kick: A corner kick is awarded when a player puts the ball past their own by-line. The kick at taken from the corner of the pitch closest to where the ball went out of play. Use the D-Pad to highlight the player you want to aim the kick to, and press the B button to take the corner. Free Kick: Free kicks are only awarded in this game when an offside is called (i.e. when a player makes a pass to a teammate who is further up field than the last man back on the opposing team). There are no free kicks given from fouls in this game. Use the D-Pad to highlight a recipient, and press B to take the free kick. Goal Kick: These are awarded when a player puts the ball past the by-line on either side of the opponent's goal. The goalkeeper will place the ball on the corner of the smaller box in their area. Use the D-Pad to select an outfield player, and press B to take the kick and pass it to that player. Throw-in: When a player dribbles the ball over the sideline at the top or bottom of the playing area on-screen, a throw-in is awarded to the opposite team. Use the D-Pad to highlight a player you want to throw the ball to, and press B to take the throw. Open play resumes once the throw has been taken. Penalty Shootout ---------------- If a game finishes with the scores on both teams level, it will proceed directly to a penalty shootout (there are no extra time periods given in this game). Both teams take it in turns taking penalty kicks, the winner being decided by who scores the most on a best-of-5 basis. Taking a penalty is done as easily as using the D-Pad to determine where you want to place the kick, and press A to take the penalty, and hope the keeper doesn't reach it. When controlling the goalkeeper, use Up or Down to move along the line, and if you get in front of the ball when it's taken, you'll save it. The game keeps track of the shootout scoreline in the top-centre of the screen. Whereas in real football, if the scores are still level after the initial 5 spot-kicks have been taken, the shootout would advance to sudden death. However, in this game, if the scores are equal when each team has taken 5 penalties, the game finishes as a draw. That's absolutely everything there is to playing this game; have fun! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.3. Teams [0103] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are seven teams to choose from in the game of Soccer. Dave Allison, the webmaster of this particular website is notorious for stealing FAQs and guides from countless authors and hosting them on his own web site, often altering disclaimers to appear as though his site is permitted to host it, and removing GameFAQs and other reputable web sites to make it look like they are not! This is a severe violation of copyright law and authorship rights and has been going on for the best part of the last decade, if not longer. If you have written any FAQs of your own and are asked by this web site to host it, I would personally advise you to politely reject the offer (as accepting would be indirectly supporting FAQ theft), but occasionally check the web site to make sure none of your work has been stolen/altered and posted there.
