I N T R O D U C T I O N ........................................... *INTRO =============================================================================== Introduction to the Game Shinsenden is a turn-based RPG set in a Chinese landscape of towers, towns, pagodas and dojos, and you play as a young monk of 18. The music and design are lovely, but the encounter rate is fiendish, and you'll soon be pulling your hair out trying to survive, even if you are playing using an emulator and save states. However, there is something wonderful about Shinsenden. It's hard to explain, but the unique and often comic enemies, the fact that you can capture most of them, and the satisfaction when you beat up the bosses, kept me playing for a long time. The game was never released in the West, and the only way you can play it in English is by using a fan translation patch. This FAQ is based on that translation, and I'm very grateful to the people (especially aishsha) who made it possible for those of us who don't know Japanese to play this entertaining, but tough (minor warning!) RPG. Thanks also to Saikyo Mog who told me about the game, and found a creative way past a glitch at the end of the first chapter when I was in despair at ever being able to continue playing. And thanks to Psycho_Penguin who played the game with me, and found all kinds of neat tricks and solutions to what appeared to be unsolvable mysteries. (Which is how I learned that you can walk across hills, and that the endless cave really is endless!) Introduction to the FAQ The game basics section is long, because this game has some unique features, that needed some explaining! There are maps posted on GameFAQs for all the major dungeon locations, and these are linked throughout the FAQ. My main aim is to explain how to get through the game without dying, so I have erred on the side of caution at all times. Of course there are other ways to play if you are using an emulator with save states, and are prepared to save often and reload often. =============================================================================== II. Navigate through the menus, and move, using the directional pad. Speed up movement in towns and dungeons (not on the world map) by pressing B while walking. --------------- 02. MENU SYSTEM --------------- MAIN MENU COMMANDS Speak - Press A to speak to someone. You must be directly facing them Spell - Select a party member to view spells that can be used outside battle. This includes healing spells, and Mountain Move, a spell that enables you to transport the party directly to another location. Item - Choose a party member and you will see their inventory, including equipment. You can use any healing or status cure items and some battle items at any time, but the latter won't have any effect and will be lost if you use them. You can also give items to someone else on the team. Search - Use this command to search directly below the lead character's feet. Only of use for searching pots and urns for items. Equip - This command shows you a screen with all party members and the option: FORMATION. You can change the order and the first person will lead the party as well as being the first to command on the battle screen. Use this menu to equip or unequip weapons and armour. If someone is carrying a weapon or armour that they cannot equip, then you won't see it listed even if they are carrying it. Status - Select one ally and you will be shown their status screen. Tap A again to view different pages. STATUS SCREEN .----NAME----------------.---------------------------------------. | Class: Monk | | Offense ## (includes equipped weapon) | | Gender: Male | Portrait| Defense ## (includes all arms) | | Age: 18 | | | | Level: ## | | Wpn : name of weapon | |------------------------| | | Str HP | Arm : name of body armour | | Agl Max HP | | | Wsd MP | Sld : name of current shield | |-------. Max MP | | | Money | TP | Hlm : name of current helm | |-------' Max TP |---------------------------------------. | Exp: #### ### | - (Experience to next level) |________________________| Each character increases their stats (by random amounts) when they level up, and they gain variable amounts of HP, MP (used for casting magic spells) and TP. TP is Technique Points, and the monks have access to some very powerful physical attacks using these points. Strength (Str) affects physical attack power and is added to the attack strength of the equipped weapon. Agility (Agl) affects speed of action in battle, and the higher it is the better chance of your team making their attacks before the enemy. Wisdon (Wsd) determines the power of magic. As you can see from this diagram, each character can equip four things, a weapon, armour, shield and helmet. Shields and helmets can be equipped by anyone and there are not many variations of these, but body armour and weapons are many and varied, and some can only be equipped by a particular team member. Press A again to see the right hand page with details of current equipment and overall defense and offense. Press A once more and you will be shown that character's attack spell list, including the MP needed for each one. The next page shows their healing spells, and these are the ones you can use outside of battle. The third and last page shows their current skills or techniques. The menu screens do not explain exactly what all these spells or skills do, or how many enemies they target. Some will only target one enemy, and other target a group. ----------------- 03. BATTLE SYSTEM ----------------- Enemies are hidden (except for bosses) and will appear randomly as you walk around the world map and dungeons. The encounter rate is usually VERY HIGH!. You might just take one step and OH NO! yet another battle against four Fire Knights when you've already defeated three other sets in as many steps. Up to 5 enemies can appear at once, and they can be different kinds as well. This makes using group attacks less effective, if, for example, there are three different kinds of enemies in a large group of five. There are no spells or attacks that target all enemies at once regardless of type. If you're using save states on an emulator and reload (hoping to avoid those 4 Fire Knights) then you are likely to find that they reappear, even if you take a slightly different route, stepping to the right, perhaps, instead of to the left. They can even use the exact same sequence of attacks, so the encounters, especially inside dungeons, are not as randomly generated as it might appear. At the start of a battle, you'll see all enemies against a black screen (the numbers vary, but it can be anything from 1 to 5) although your team members are not visible. Select your attacks for each team member using MP for a spell, TP for a technique, or your equipped weapon for a physical strike. You can also use some weapons as an item, and there are a few items that work as attack spells, and of course, a number that can be used to heal an ally, or to boost various attributes. After you have selected your attacks, the round begins, and you don't have to input any more commands until it's time for the next round. Actions take place according to agility, and the higher the better, especially if you hope to take out dangerous foes before they get a chance to defeat you. You can target any enemy you like, simply by using the D pad to move the cursor onto a particular enemy. Be careful in your selection because when a target enemy is killed, your attacks will not go to the next target (unless they are part of a group of identical enemies), and you could end up wasting an attack. Winning battles will reward you with gold (a maximum of 999) and experience points, which are divided equally between all active party members. If only one character is alive at the end of a battle, then they will receive all the experience points. Very few monsters drop items, but you might be lucky. Any dropped item won't have any details, though you will find it in the first available inventory slot. THE CRIMSON GOURD At a certain point in the game, you'll find the CRIMSON GOURD item. This makes a huge difference, as you can now capture up to 9 monsters (although a few, including all bosses, cannot be captured) and then summon them to assist you in battle. The only drawback is that this takes a turn to implement. However, capturing enemies is a sure fire way to prevent them from attacking you! There is no skill or MP cost to using the gourd, but later on Raichi will gain a spell (Soul Leech) that enables her to absorb and summon monsters in the same manner, and she stores these separately, so in effect you can store up to 18 monsters! However, you can still only have a maximum of three fighting at one time. The other helpful thing about using summoned monsters is that some of have healing spells, and you can view their offensive and defensive stats and their HP. Although you can heal them during a battle, once it's over, they disappear, and they can be killed by enemy attacks. They also can be the target for attacks that might otherwise hurt your allies, so that's another reason for using them. You can summon up to three to the battle, and replace any that die. Even if you have damaged a monster before you capture it in the gourd, it will have its full complement of HP and MP when you summon it into battle. ------------------- 04. SPECIAL ATTACKS ------------------- Skills require TP (Technique Points) to use, and spells need MP (Magic Points), and there are no items that refill these points, so you'll find that most of the time it's not worth wasting MP and TP on lesser enemies. Physical attacks with an equipped weapon, or one used as an item, will deal with most enemies. The other advantage to using equipped weapons is that you will often trigger a special attack. These are critical blows and there are a range of different kinds. They will usually kill an enemy outright, and sometimes they will kill a whole group at once. Great Strike - named monster killed Awesome Blow - 1 monster destroyed Direct Hit - inflicts more damage than normal (about three times as much) Raging Wave - whole group of monsters beaten in one! -------------------------------- 05. PARTY MEMBERS AND EXPERIENCE -------------------------------- There are three classes of characters in Shinsenden: monks, warriors and Raichi, who is a female monk, and each "class" haa different sets of skills and spells. Hero (whom you can name, although his 'real' name is later revealed as Ryujin), is accompanied from the start by Raichi. You will also be joined later by two warriors, one of whom is named Shoen, and even later by Toron, another monk. However, the maximum number in the party at any one time is three, and most of the time you will have to contend with less than this. One of the slightly disconcerting things about this game is that team members join, leave forever, or rejoin. In fact, for some of the game Hero is alone, and that's really challenging, since he has no healing spells at all. Raichi (your companion for most of the game) will abandon you at two points, but she rejoins and stays with you until the end, so it's worthwhile raising her levels and buying her the best equipment. Each character levels up at a slightly different rate, but everyone receives the same experience from winning battles, and they all acquire new skills and magic spells (different ones though) level by level. They also receive increases to their stats, but these are random. You might get more HP or more MP or higher TP (or all of these!) and the number of stat increases varies as well, for Wisdom, Agility and Strength. However, it's not worth bothering about this, since the increases will average out, and comparing two games it was clear that the stats were roughly the same, even at high levels. When you reach a certain level you'll notice that the spell menu is full, but you will still learn new spells because the early spells are upgraded into more powerful magic. ----------------- 06. FINDING STUFF ----------------- Enemies very rarely drop any items (although defeating them gives you a cash reward) so this is not something to even consider when planning a trip into a tough dungeon or castle. (They are all tough...) You will find a few large red pots both inside towns and in towers and castles, and some tall urns in dungeons, and these contain a few items and new equipment. But even these are often empty, and you'll need to stock up on stuff from the local shop. It is worth searching the pots though, because the weapons that can be used as items are only found here, and are not sold in the local shops. -------------------------------------- 07. HEALING, LIFE AND DEATH AND SAVING -------------------------------------- There are no save points inside dungeon areas, and the only way to make a permanent record is with a sage at some towns. If Hero is downed then it's game over and you can restart from that save. If an ally is downed you can continue playing, and revive them (for free) with a priest in a local town. (They will only have minimal HP and require further healing.) Raichi has a revive spell much later in the game, and this heals someone for around 10% of their full HP. The item, Kan Kon Tan, will revive someone with full HP, but so far as I know it is only dropped from the Pretender enemy (which is only found in one location in chapter 4) and it's very rare. Use inns to heal up all HP, MP and TP. They are very cheap. SHOPS AND SHOPPING ---------------------- Most towns have two shops: one that sells equipment and the other that sells items. You will be shown who can equip a weapon or piece of armour when you select to buy it (assuming you have enough cash). However, you won't be told what kind of weapon/equipment it is, or shown the effect on your stats until you equip it. You can sell off excess stuff for three quarters of its value, and that includes things you've found, although you won't be permitted to sell certain important items, such as the Crimson Gourd. You can only sell things at the item shop. ------------------ 09. MAGIC (SPELLS) ------------------ There are two sets of spells, one consisting of healing and helpful things which can be accessed from the main menu screen, and the second set of attack magic can only be used during a battle. Be careful using healing spells in the field, as I have found that my game froze on me a few times while doing this, so it's probably safer to heal during a battle. This seems to be especially the case when using Purity, to heal from poison. Note that Hero does not have any healing spells at all, (later on he gets Lohan and Boost but that's all, even up to level 40). Raichi is your main healer and gets all the good healing spells, although the warriors that join your team for a short while will have Nectar, a spell that heals 30 HP for one. What this means is that you must always carry plenty of healing items, bought from the item shops. However, there is no item to revive someone, so if anyone dies (and you don't have Raichi's Soul Return spell yet) you're screwed, and should head back to town as fast as you can! Attack spells are arranged in columns on the menu screen, and, as you level up, the spells will change into more powerful forms, and the MP required to use them will also increase. I've just included the codes to make the arrangement clear, and these are not in the game menu. Although the groups of spells are fire, ice, wind and thunder, you don't see any difference in the spell animation, because there is no such thing! Nonetheless, some enemies are more (and less) susceptible to particular elemental attacks. .------.-------------------.--------.------.---------------.--------.-----. | CODE | SPELL | TARGET | CODE | SPELL | TARGET | MP | |------+-------------------+--------+------+---------------+--------+-----| | A1 | Fire Wheel | One | A2 | Charming Ice | One | 10 | | | Wonder Wheel | One | | Binding Freeze| One | 12 | | | Wildfire Wheel | One | | Frozen Arrow | One | 14 | |------+-------------------+--------+------+---------------+--------+-----| | B1 | Sacred Flame | Group | B2 | Ice Law | Group | 20 | | | Thunder Blaze | Group | | Demon Ice | Group | 24 | | | Samadhi Flame | Group | | Spirit Ice | Group | 28 | |------+-------------------+--------+------+---------------+--------+-----| | C1 | Flash | One | C2 | Burning Air | One | 24 | | | Demon Thunder | One | | Twister | One | 28 | | | Demon Storm | One | | Demon Wind | One | 32 | |------+-------------------+--------+------+---------------+--------+-----| | D1 | Bolt | Group | D2 | Wind Blade | Group | 36 | | | Charming Thunder | Group | | Devil Twister | Group | 40 | | | Violent Thunder | Group | | Wind Rambler | Group | 44 | |------+-------------------+--------+------+---------------+--------+-----| | E1 | Hell Fire | One | E2 | Hell Mortem | Group | 44 | | | Dark Way | One | | Body Death | Group | 48 | | | Harihara | One | | Extreme Wither| Group | 52 | |------+-------------------+--------+------+---------------+--------+-----| | F1 | Shadow Binder | One | F2 | Fast Grasp | One | 24 | |------+-------------------+--------+------+---------------+--------+-----| | G1 | Demon Seal | One | G2 | Soul Leech | One | 46 | |______|___________________|________|______|_______________|________|_____| Most of the healing spells are only obtained by Raichi, and it's important to keep her alive so she can use them, especially before you have access to captured monster allies. However, he does learn most of the attack spells. .------------------.-----.--------.-------------------------------------------. | Healing Spells | MP | Target | Effect | |------------------+-----+--------+-------------------------------------------| | Nectar | 20 | Ally | Recovers 30 HP | | Body Move | 20 | Ally | Escape from battle | | Purity | 12 | Ally | Cures poison | | Kundali | 12 | Ally | Purifies from paralysis | | Shakti | 38 | Ally | Recovers 50 HP | | Mountain Move | 38 | Team | Transports the team to a named location | | | | | (must be on world map or in town) | | Boost | 32 | Ally | Increases speed | | Lohan | 32 | Ally | Increases strength | | Mahara | 82 | Ally | Recovers 200 HP | | Binding Charm | 82 | Foes | Blocks movement | | Dhara | 124 | Allies | Heal all allies for around 100 HP | | Delay | 124 | Foes | Slows down a group's movement | | Bhita | 150 | Ally | Recovers 150 TP | | Soul Return | 150 | Ally | Returns from the dead with around 8% HP | |__________________|_____|________|___________________________________________| Enemies use these same spells, although some have particular, and unique, skills that only they can use. TECHNIQUES (SKILLS) ----------------------- These techniques are not as useful as the spells and are best saved for bosses and when you're really desperate! They use a lot of TP and you don't have much, especially earlier in the game, and there is no way to replenish your TP until Raichi learns the Bhita spell in Chapter 3. Also, you won't trigger a special critical attack when using these skills. .---------------.-----.--------.----------------------------------------------. | SKILLS | TP | Target | Effect | |---------------+-----+--------+----------------------------------------------| | Repel Punch | 50 | One | Weak attack on one | | Crude Punch | 100 | One | Weak/medium attack on one | | Dragon Rip | 100 | Group | Weak/medium attack on group | | Rouge Punch | 30 | One | Very weak attack on one (Warrior only) | | Climb Crush | 30 | Group | Very weak attack on group (Warrior only) | | Wolf Fangs | 50 | One | Weak attack on one (Warrior only) | | Stone Punch | 50 | Group | Medium attack on group (Warrior only) | | Qigong Strike | 50 | One | Fall unconscious on first turn. ENEMIES ----------- Enemies are unique to particular locations and if you want to see them all you'll need to explore every corner of the world map and dungeons. Some are only found at one staircase, or inside one cave. They can appear singly, in groups, or in mixed groups and you won't see them until they spring out of thin air at you! And that's the major challenge with this game. You can take one step and be attacked, take another, and you are attacked again, and so on, many times over. At other times you might be lucky and go a fair distance without a battle at all. Groups of enemies are particularly dangerous, not because of status spells (which are only rarely used) but because of the ferocity and speed of their attacks. Many enemies have powerful spells and others have unique skills which only they can use. Some are particularly resistant to physical assault, and others are resistant to elemental spells. The best way to discover an enemy's power and talent is to capture it and then you can view its HP, offense and defense and use its spells and skills. All details of enemies are in the bestiary. =============================================================================== III. H I N T S A N D T I P S ........................................ *TIPS =============================================================================== ------------------ GENERAL STRATEGIES ------------------ Enemies are brutal, encounters are frequent, and (inside dungeons) running away rarely works. Once a battle begins your chances of escape are minimal, at least until Raichi gets her Body Move spell, which makes the enemies for that battle disappear. There is no item to heal MP so you have to be careful to preserve this for boss battles, although there is a spell (only obtained for Raichi, later on in the game) to replenish some TP. The only way to progress is to fight LOTS of battles and stock up on as many healing items (Regens and Jindans) as you can afford. And that brings me to the other strategy. Fight, fight, and fight again on the world map close to a town, to raise levels and earn cash. Then, buy the very best equipment for everyone in your current party, and fill your inventory with healing items. You cannot save anywhere inside a dungeon (apart from using save states) and the only way to make a quick escape is to use the item: Ruyi Sphere, which takes you back outside. One way to preserve health and healing items is to fight with low HP. (And by low HP I mean something like 10 - 20 HP.) This is risky of course, because you could be quickly taken out with an unexpected attack, especially when enemies surprise you and have the initiative in battle. However, the good news is that defense INCREASES when your HP is low, and your team will often evade physical attacks completely, or only receive minor damage, even from spells. Some weapons also have a particular use as an item, even if that character cannot equip them. While fighting, select to use a weapon (that includes one that is equipped) and you will hit the enemy with it. This is particularly helpful if, for example, you have a fire sword equipped and the enemy is strong to fire, or if an enemy leeches your strength, as this does not seem to effect item based weapon attacks. In fact, I found that Raichi nearly always inflicted more damage using a weapon as an item, rather than her equipped weapon. The main drawback to this option is that you won't obtain special critical hits with a weapon used as an item, and it takes a little longer to make the selection, compared with just attacking directly. Note that none of the weapons sold at shops can be used in this way, and it's only possible with a few "found" weapons. See the full weapons list for all the details. TIPS 1. You cannot sell things at the arms shop, but you can sell anything at the item shop for two-thirds of what it's worth. Sell off lower grade equipment to raise cash and make space for lots of healing items. Keep some weapons to use as items, especially the Ice Cane, Flash Axe and Rekki. 2. Use spells and these are just as effective as, and often more useful than, physical attacks on some enemies. Red coloured enemies are usually fire based, and blue ones, ice. (Those elemental weapons are very useful against these kinds of foes, even though you cannot get a special boosted attack when using them.) 3. NEVER try to run from battles inside dungeons. It might work for a lone monster, early on the game, but not later, and you just waste a turn when you should be attacking! You can use the spell Body Move to escape from ordinary battles if you really need to. 4. Retain sufficient MP to use the Mountain Move spell when you're fighting far from a town, or buy a Space Shift item, which has the same effect. 5. After reaching Lishu (Chapter of the Wise) you can buy the Ruyi Sphere, and this can be used to take you back outside a dungeon. It's VERY USEFUL, especially if you find you are running out of options and need to make a speedy retreat. 6. Fight lots of battles early on, both to raise levels and obtain enough cash to buy the very best equipment. Always upgrade equipment when you reach the next town. 7. Once you have the Crimson Gourd item, use it to absorb (capture) enemies, and summon them in battle, especially when fighting powerful bosses. Raichi gains the Soul Leech spell at level 15 and she can do the same thing (though using MP), so you can have up to 18 monsters to call on, although only 3 can be active on the battlefield at one time. =============================================================================== I V. Hero and a girl are at a Dojo and told that it's time for their last initiation trial. They are to find a cave in the mountains and inside they must search for the Ichimai Charm and bring it back to the master. Yokai (monsters) are roaming the area (naturally!) so be careful! And that's it. First, let's check out the building, since, in time-honoured fashion there are sometimes a few items to find, though not that many in this game. To move more quickly inside a town or Dojo hold B while using the directional buttons. Make your way to the left of the building and search the red pots. You can find [NECTAR WATER] in the corner one. Walk up the passage and take the stairs to the next floor. One of the people in the left room here will advise you to buy better equipment in Horai, and that's good advice, if you can survive long enough to get there! Search the two pots here for [8 GOLD] in the left one and [10 GOLD] in the right. The room at the right serves as a free inn. Although you've got to climb the stairs to get here, it's worthwhile to heal here rather than at the inn you'll find at Horai as you're going to need every penny! There's nothing at all in the 4 pots. The man on his own in the other room asks about his glasses and I spent ages searching around for these hoping for some cool reward. I don't think they exist, so forget about that. Back downstairs you can speak to everyone if you want, and make a permanent save with the old guy where you started out. If you are downed then you will have the option to start over from this save. To the right of the main room there's an item store and you will need a few things before setting forth. Buy a couple of Ro Nai Tan's to heal poison and healing items, but forget about the boosting stuff for now. Raichi starts with one Nectar and you found one, but that's not enough if you plan to take more than a few steps! FIGHTING That's all there is to do here, so set forth and fight a few battles in the surrounding area. It's best just to level up around here before heading east for Horai, and keep using that free inn. If you're faced with more than a couple of enemies there's a good chance that they will kill you before you've even finished your first battle as you don't have any skills or magic and the enemies are fast and strong. Don't worry though...it gets worse later! You'll find that sometimes you only take one step and you are in another battle, so don't take any chances and keep well healed at all times. To save on money for healing items just stay close to the Dojo. Keep to the grassy area in front of the Dojo and avoid the forests and hills, and the enemies are less likely to be in large groups. Raichi will level up quickly, as she only needs 12 experience points to reach level 2, and 24 to reach level 3. Hero is one step behind her and requires 24 to reach level 2. Raichi gets her first attack spell, Firewheel, at level 3, and another at level 4, and at level 5 she obtains Nectar, a healing spell. Hero gets his first skill, Repel Punch, at level 4, but he won't have enough Technique Points to make use of it just yet, and he get the same attack spell, Firewheel, at level 5. Stay around here saving often, healing up and fighting some more until you get to that level AT LEAST! The higher the better! You'll level up quickly so it won't take long, and you'll notice a different range of stat increases when you level up. These are random, up to a point, but Raichi will gain a lot more MP (eventually) and Hero will get more TP. Hero's strength is always greater and Raichi has higher wisdom. Make use of her spells as soon as you get enough MP to use them: spells are very effective on Bone type monsters such as the Skull and Bonecrab. You can select which enemy to attack even if there is a group, so use this to your advantage either to kill them off one at a time, or to target one with magic. When you're able to win battles easily, make your way east to the village. One thing to mention is that you CAN walk over hills, though not mountains. This is something I forgot at some later point, when it really was essential to remember, so I'm just reminding you now! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. You arrive at the west side of town, and enter the first building you see and go upstairs. Chat to the folks and search the first of two pots for another [NECTAR WATER]. Go inside the opposite building and this is the weapon store. You should aim to buy the Bujutsu Gi for both. as well as the shield, but you won't have enough cash yet. You will find new weapons for both of them inside the cave, but not until you've defeated a boss, so you might want to wait until you've enough cash for the better weapons as well. At least selling prices are good so you won't lose out too much. Time to do more levelling up and earning money for these. After checking out the place just head back to the Dojo and carry on doing just that. (You could stay around Horai and use the inn to heal up if you prefer, and the inn is cheap enough.) There's nothing to find in the four pots inside the weapon store and nothing upstairs, although you can chat to the folks. The inn is to the right of the town and you can go inside and talk, but again, there's nothing to find. It costs 20 G for both of you to stay the night. Like I said, it's not expensive, but why waste a free inn? The item store is found at the top right corner and this sells the helpful (but expensive for now) Space Shift item that allows you to warp to another location. When you've saved enough to buy the better equipment, sell off your old stuff here and make sure you stock up on healing items before setting off for the cave. The priest type bearded man in the middle building will revive Raichi if she dies, and heal anyone from poison with no cost at all! Remember that if Hero dies it's game over and you'll can continue from your last save with the head monk at the Dojo, assuming you made one there. By level 6 Raichi gains Sacred Flame, a spell that targets a group of enemies, and at level 7 and 8 she learns two more powerful spells: Flash targets one enemy for a lot of damage, and Burning Air is also a single enemy stronger spell. These use up a lot more MP so be prudent about using them too often. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Note that Raichi learns Mountain Move at level 9 and this spell will allow you to warp from one location on the world map to another. However, it uses 38 MP so if you plan to utilise this handy short cut home, make sure you reserve that amount of MP. Alternatively, invest in a Space Shift item. When your levels are around 7/8 or higher, and you've bought the better equipment for both as well as some healing items, including items to heal poison, walk over the hills to the west of Horai and you'll find the cave entrance. It's visible from Gosokan and you can take the long way around from there as well. You'll get a taster of some of the enemies found inside here on the way to the place. Even with the best equipment and decent levels you'll find things challenging in here, so you might want to retreat after fighting a few battles and head back to Horai when you realise it's really going to be tougher than you expected! A lot of enemies use poison attacks and you'll quickly lose HP if you don't heal this immediately with a Ro Nai Tan item. Remember that you have to walk back out of the cave, and get back to Horai too, and you'll need some HP and MP left to get you there safely. One more thing, DON'T use up your TP until you meet the boss, and this will make everything much easier. Head directly forwards from the entrance and turn left. The cave opens out after a short distance, but there's nothing to find, so turn up, and follow the path until you reach some stairs leading down to the next floor. So far so good, but the enemies now appear in larger groups and you'll encounter the bright green Gougu snake that you just know is going to inflict poison. Try and target these first and kill them quickly, which is easier said than done since they have high HP (around 50 or so) and one strike or low level spell won't be enough. And then there's the Roach. These appear in groups or 3 or 4 and are tough to damage unless you use spells, although their attacks are weak, so it's best just to save on MP and keep hitting them. They give quite good experience and gold, so are worth the extra effort! Carry on up the path until you reach a junction and there's a locked door if you go right. Leave that for now and head left, following the green path up. You'll see a black opening in the far wall, and just go through here. Check your HP and prepare for a battle! Actually you will probably first run into the Kanto enemy who uses Blazing Flame on both of you, and appears in pairs, very unfairly! Use Charming Ice to kill it off instantly (or nearly instantly, as these monsters have around 60 HP.) There's something on the far wall that looks like a narrow shield, so investigate it to trigger your first boss fight. (And it's the item you were looking for.) o---------------------------o | NEWT BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 150 (estimate) | | Exp. : 30 | | Gold : 80 | | Drop : Cloud Shoes | o---------------------------o So long as you're both wearing the Bujutsu Gi and a Wooden Shield, the Newt's attacks won't hurt you much, but if you use ordinary attacks, even with the better weapons you could buy, you'll hardly dent him, unless you're lucky enough to get a critical direct hit. Use Repel Punch for around 50 HP damage on the Newt, but don't bother with spells as they do no damage at all and are just a waste of MP better used for healing. At level 8, with Hero having the Ryusen Sword, you will dispense with the Newt using 3 of these attacks, two with Hero and one with Raichi. Don't leave just yet, but go through the black hole in the wall and check the 4 pots at the back of the chamber. The lower right one contains [HOTEN GEKI] a weapon for Hero, and the lower left has the [SENKAFU] weapon for Raichi. Go to the item inventory for Hero and hand over this to her and make sure to equip both weapons. The top two pots contain [NECTAR WATER] and another [NECTAR WATER]. Next, you've got to get of here without dying! Use the Nectars to heal you both and make you way back down this cavern, and along the next path and hope you don't run into a large group of snakes on the way. (Though they should be much easier to defeat now you have stronger weapons.) When you reach the T junction you'll notice that the door that was locked is now open. DON'T BE TEMPTED TO GO THROUGH! Seriously, don't. There is a tough battle awaiting you and sometimes discretion is the better part of valour. Leave Yorai, heal, save, buy more healing items, and then return. (Unless you're confident of success, and have plenty of HP and items left, in which case you could go ahead, because after winning the battle you'll be taken out of the cave automatically, which saves you a long walk.) So, ignore the open door, and walk down the path to the stairs and up to the entrance floor. Go back down, right, and down, and you're outside again. Return to Horai, and thence, back to Gosokan to save your game. Stock up on more healing items now, including a couple of Regens and maybe one or two of the status boosting items, because Hero is going to face some tough fights on his own after a while, although you can still do some more shopping after completing the cave. The head monk will comment about the open door and tell you that you should investigate it, which you guessed already. So, set forth for the cave again. THROUGH THE DOOR From the start, go up, left, up and down the stairs, and when you reach the T junction, head to the right and go through that door. Events will take over as soon as you enter the door and discover an injured man, and you'll be in a forced battle with 4 Guards. o---------------------------o | GUARDS (x4) (BATTLE) | o---------------------------o | HP : 90 each | | Exp. : 120 | | Gold : 240 | o---------------------------o They don't use any spells on you, but your magic won't hurt them either, so just attack with your best techniques. Hero should have Dragon Rip by now and if you want a fast fight, use a Lohan's Belt item to boost his attack power. You'll only have sufficient TP for one Dragon's Rip but this will do around 40-50 HP to them all, and then simply keep hitting them (If you use the boost item this helps get more direct hits.) After the battle you'll be whisked back to the Dojo with the injured man, Shoen, who will explain a few things about the charmed Hoken blades and the one that he hid inside that cave. Next task is to go back to the cave yet again... and find the Genbu Blade. You'll be back outside the Dojo after this conversation, fully healed, but re-enter to save your game if you wish. THE EAST CAVE Return to the cave, (restock with items if necessary) and enter the open door again. This time, go to the end of the passage and down the stairs into a new and larger cavern. You'll see some pots on the far side of the right wall, and that's your destination, but first there are some minor items to find if you walk all the way up to the top of the cave. You'll meet the Genjutsu enemy in here (often in pairs) and they can hurt you badly with their Fire Wheel spell doing around 35-40 HP damage even with the best equipment and at level 8/9. Don't take any chances with them, keep healthy, and never attempt to run. They might be faster than you too, so don't rely on using a healing item or spell at the start of a turn. You'll also encounter the Shinigani who can paralyse and is resistant to physical attacks. Use one low level spell on it with Raichi and attack with Hero. You'll find 4 pots if you walk directly up to the top wall of the cave, although these don't contain much of interest: just [10 GOLD] in the top right one, and a [TIGER'S BELT] strength boosting item in the lower right. There's nothing inside the left two. From here, skirt the edge of the cave, following the outside wall right, down and then, left, and you'll arrive at the 8 pots. Be careful to find everything from the pots, though it's only a couple of things, and leave the bottom left one until last, because once you search this pot, you'll be whisked away! Equip the Ginyo Sword to Hero as this is slightly more powerful than the Hoten Geki. 1 - Nothing 2 - Nothing 3 - Nothing 4 - [GINYO SWORD] 5 - [GENBU BLADE] 6 - Nothing 7 - Nothing 8 - [30 GOLD] As soon as you pick up the Genbu Blade you'll be transported out of the cave and back to Gosokan. Both of you will have been fully healed. If you want to return to the cave or buy any more items, you can do so, but you'll have to go to Horai to heal. Don't go upstairs at Gosokan, or you'll trigger the next set of events. (By the way, the Genbu Sword is very weak and so you won't want to equip it, but you cannot sell it or give it anyone else to carry.) GOSOKAN AGAIN When you're ready, enter Gosokan, remove any spare items from Raichi and give them to Hero. You can talk to the stricken inhabitants if you like, but you cannot save your game any more. Eventually you must head upstairs to the bedroom where you had free healing. No more! After a short scene you'll be in a battle. o---------------------------o | GUARDS (x4) (BATTLE) | o---------------------------o | HP : 90 each | | Exp. : 120 | | Gold : 240 | o---------------------------o There are 4 guards to fight, and magic does hardly any damage to them. This is exactly the same fight that you had inside the cave, so use the same tactics, with Dragon Rip to hit them all for around 40 HP damage, and then continue to strike them one at a time, with both Hero and Raichi. They each have around 90 HP and don'tuse any spells on you, so this is easy to win. Shoen, the man you rescued, now apologises for bringing this disaster on everyone, and you're told leave the Dojo and go west to find King Byakko. This occurs immediately, with no chance to do anything else, but you'll be at full health again at the start of the next chapter. =============================================================================== T H E C H A P T E R O F G E N B U ................................... *CHP2 =============================================================================== Locations 1. Unfortunately, Raichi is nowhere to be seen... o---------------------------o | IRONCLAD (x2) (BATTLE) | o---------------------------o | HP : 90 + | | Exp. : 120 | | Gold : 120 | o---------------------------o These are much like the guards but with slightly more HP, so use physical attacks on them and don't bother trying spells. Even without Raichi the battle is easy to win, as they won't do much damage to you so long as you have the best equipment. You could use Dragon Rip on them. Immediately following this battle you'll be into another fight. o---------------------------o | GARUDA BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 110 + | | Exp. : None | | Gold : None | o---------------------------o Garuda might be a single enemy, but he's got a few tricks up his green sleeves. On your first turn use Repel Punch on him if you didn't use Dragon Rip against the Ironclads, or use any spell. If you're really unlucky he will use a sealing spell on you on his first turn, meaning that you cannot use arts: spells and techniques are sealed. If you attempt to use these you will appear to be able to, but nothing will happen when you attack. It's not obvious when the effect of the sealing spell wears off (it seems to last for three rounds) so I just used items, (Cloud Shoes to boost speed and the Tiger's Belt to boost attack power) and kept hitting him. He is strong against physical attacks, but with the boost to strength you'll be able to hurt him for twice the normal amount. At level 9 with the best sword you should do around 16 HP damage to him. Use a Regen if your health is getting low, but it's unlikely you'll need to bother. When you've done around 110 HP worth of damage to Garuda he'll decide that's enough, and run off, which is why you don't get any rewards. NEW ALLIES! After this, events take over, and someone called Toron takes the Byakko Blade, and you find out that Raichi is trapped in Genbu's castle. When the scene is over, you'll be back in control and discover that you have two companions, Lin Shu and Koryo, both of them warriors, to fight with you. Both warriors join you at level 7. with identical stats and equipment, except that one is 21 and the other (Koryo) 20! They have the Nectar healing spell as well as Boost, and the technique, Rouge Punch. .----NAME------- .---------------------------------------. | Class: Warrior | Offense 57 (includes equipped weapon) | | Gender: Male | Defense 36 (includes all arms) | | Age: 20/21 | | | Level: 7 | | |--------------------------------------------------------| | Str 37 HP: 86 | Wpn : Qi Xing | | Agl 37 Max HP: 86 | Arm : Leather Armor | | Wsd 24 MP: 34 | Sld : Wooden Shield | |-------. Other inhabitants will try to scare you with stories of monsters in Genbu's Castle, but we don't care. Raichi has to be rescued! First of all do some shopping, because even with two allies who can heal, things are not going to be any easier. There isn't a priest here, so if someone dies you'll have to walk back to Byakko Castle to revive them, but at least there are shops. The weapon store is at the top right of town and the item store at the left. You'll also find some odd argument going on between two old men, but this is irrelevant to your quest, and there's nothing to find in the two pots inside the weapon store. You will need the very best equipment before tackling the boss of this chapter, but you will find armour and weapons for everyone in the pagoda, which is stronger than the stuff you can buy. However, start off by investing in the better shields and helmets for your team, and buy the stronger armour for Hero, at least. If you need more cash, sell off the weaker stuff at the item shop and fight some local enemies. In fact, level 10 for everyone would be advisable before tackling the pagoda. You'll also need some extra healing items for the two guys to carry as they only have one Nectar Water each, and although they have the Nectar spell it's not that useful because of their low MP. FIGHTING The EvilKashin (a sort of flying head) and the Skullhead enemies are resistant to physical attacks, so use spells or a technique on them if they are part of a larger group. They also use an all party fire spell, and if they are with Hippos, who use a strong spell on one, you could find your party losing HP fast! The Skullhead will paralyse someone, so they can be awkward too. Watch out for the Lizard. This enemy has a very powerful physical attack, and even though it doesn't have a lot of HP and is easy to kill, don't let it attack you! If you encounter a group of three FireMonks and 2 FireCents (yes, it's quite likely), then act fast to take out the monks, as they use an all party fire spell that can soon leave you gasping to survive. They tend to appear in the hills just south of the town. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. The real target is Genbu's Castle, and that's found if you keep going north and then west across another bridge, but there is no access here yet. One of the warrior's will tell you that you're not strong enough yet and that you need the Crimson Gourd. He's right, too! Fighting in here is really a trade off between equipment and levels. If your levels are lowish, then you'll need to buy all the upgraded equipment just to survive. Make sure you carry a Space Shift item with you before starting to explore the tower. This might just save your life if you need to leave in a hurry and can't face the walk back to town in a state of near death! The enemies aren't difficult to defeat, but the main problem is that they can appear in groups of anything up to 5 ,and ones on the higher floors have some powerful attacks that can soon destroy your allies. I reserved my skills for these big groups. The warriors will gain new more spells at level 10: Lohan and Climb Crush, an all enemy technique that's very useful. Walk up the right of the floor and take the corner stairs to floor 2. Check the four pots where you'll find [YASHA ARMOR] in the top left pot, for one of the warriors, and a [NECTAR WATER] in the lower right one. Equip this immediately as it gives much higher protection. On my first visit I retreated after this, having exhausted all MP and TP by this point! Next, follow the middle corridor on Floor 1 to find another staircase that leads to floor 2. There are two staircases to the right, and first of all take the one at the far right. On the next floor go down the only other stairs, and this takes you down to a small room in the middle of floor 2. Go down again to find two pots with [TENKO BLADE] and [TENKO BLADE]. Equip these to the warriors. Retrace your steps back to the room with the three stairs, and take the middle stair, leading up to floor 3. You'll be in an empty area with 3 stairs. Take the stairs at the top of the room and then walk right (on floor 4) and down, to find four more pots. The front two contain nothing and lower left has [TAIMA CLOTHES] which is slightly better armour for Hero, and the one in the corner has a [TIGER CLAW] a really good weapon for Hero. Return to the floor with the three stairs and take the lower left stairs up to another section of floor 4. [YASHA ARMOR] is in the left pot and now you have all the better equipment for everyone. Make sure you're got it all equipped and everyone is still in good health. Walk between the two pillars in this room and you'll find yourself on floor 5 and with two more more pots. There's a [RO NAI TAN] in the left one and the [CRIMSON GOURD] in the other. Watch out for pairs of the Fury enemy in here as they can inflict a lot of damage on everyone if you don't kill them quickly. Make your way out of the Pagoda, capturing monsters as you go. After healing up in town, and saving your game, it's time to mount that long overdue rescue mission! (You have to return to Byakko Castle to save your game with the king.) USING THE CRIMSON GOURD Life just got much easier! Start using the gourd immediately (although the Fury enemy found on floor 5 cannot be absorbed). Only Hero can carry and use the gourd, and it takes a turn to act to absorb one monster. Don't target this one with your allies as that would be a waste of an attack. After you have captured the monster it can be summoned from the gourd during a battle, and you can control its actions and use any spells it might have. You can use this to your advantage by removing an enemy (or more than one) from the battle, as well as having up to 3 additional allies fighting with you at any one time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. GENBU CASTLE ......................................................... *C24 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL ENEMIES HellShark, SkullHead, EvilKashin, Lizard, Hippo CASTLE ENEMIES KakuteiA, Killer Bee, Demon Bat, Mantis, Rock Monk, Lizard (no gourd), Jumonryu, BabyKnight (gourd doesn't work!), Armakuri. ITEMS None Before leaving for the Castle, sell off or transfer any excess items from Koryo (the younger of the two warriors) and don't give him any items, beyond a couple of healing ones that you might need to use on the way to Genbu's Castle. From Shagetsu, cross the bridge to the north, then, walk north and east across a second bridge. Make you way up the grassy path and along between the mountains, still heading east. When you enter the castle you will be facing down the screen with a wall behind you. Turn around and go through the dark hole and you'll be inside. Transfer any useful items, especially the Yasha armour and Tenko Blade, from Koryo to the other two, and then follow the corridor around to the left. Just before you turn right to enter a large room. Koryo will speak and run off! ((And that's the last you'll see of him.) You'll now be inside a large room. Just walk straight ahead until you reach an opening in the wall, and you will encounter a minor boss. Shoen now joins the party in place of the traitor, and you get to fight two sharks. o---------------------------o | SHRIMPSHARK x2 (BATTLE) | o---------------------------o | HP : 300 (estimate) | | Exp. : 360 | | Gold : 36 | o---------------------------o ShrimpSharks use a chilling freeze skill that damages everyone a little. Use Sacred Flame magic on them and your best skills as they both have a fair amount of HP. After the battle you'll be heading back to the corridor and have a new team mate, Shoen. These are his stats after defeating the sharks, and he has Nectar, Lohan and Boost magic with Rouge Punch, Climb Crush and Wolf Fangs techniques. .----NAME------- .---------------------------------------. | Class: Warrior | Offense 67 (includes equipped weapon) | | Gender: Male | Defense 40 (includes all arms) | | Age: 35 | | | Level: 14 | | |--------------------------------------------------------| | Str 47 HP: 104 | Wpn : Qi Xing | | Agl 44 Max HP: 147 | Arm : Leather Armor | | Wsd 26 MP: 86 | Sld : Wooden Shield | |-------. Then, return to Byakko to save your game again, and restock on better equipment for Shoen and as many healing items as you can carry. Don't bother with Nectars, and buy Regens. I'd advise leveling up your team to match Shoen's level, so everyone is at least level 15. Stock up the gourd with some allies too, before you venture deeper into Genbu's Castle: the Hippo or HellShark can be useful. Use the gourd to acquire additional allies as you go through the place: the RockMonk and Jumonryu are the most valuable since they have powerful spells, and try not to waste your TP and MP en route, though that's easier said than done! Return to the first corridor where the traitor ran off, and go through to the right. You'll find yourself outside the central building and on a green path. Go up the path, and through the middle opening on the upper wall to get back inside the castle. Head right, and follow the corridor until you find some stairs. Head left until you reach the next stairs, and you'll enter the central area. You'll encounter groups of RockMonks along the passages and that's very dangerous as they use a powerful Burning Air spell which can damage one of you for a lot of HP. Take them out quickly using group spells/techniques if you have to. One of the problems, even at higher levels, is that the KakuteiA enemies in the final room are very powerful. They don't use spells but they can damage everyone a lot, and that means having to use up precious MP and healing items just when you most need to hang onto them. You could capture them if you've some space left, but other than that, just keep healed and hope you don't run into too many battles here. If you do, and you're low on everything then it's probably best to retreat. Somehow I ended up with Shoen dead at the last stairs and had no choice! Enter the king's room and there are no random encounters in here, thank the Buddha, and you can leave again (after waving to Raichi) if you think you're not going to manage this battle just yet. Once you reach the white steps there's no turning back. o---------------------------o | GENBU (BOSS) | o---------------------------o | HP : 1500 (estimate) | | Exp. : 10 | | Gold : 1200 | o---------------------------o A single physical strike from Genbu will do around 60 - 80 HP damage even with the best equipment you can get, and levels of 15/16. His Bolt spell won't hurt for much: around 10-20 HP each, and that's about all. However, this does mean that you must keep everyone in good health and don't take risks with HP, or you could find yourself with someone dead and a very tough struggle on your hands. The best monster allies to use are those with spells, such as the RockMonk and Jumonryu. You could heal them if they are damaged but I don't think it's worth doing that so long as you have others to replace them. Use items to boost strength if you like, but the main strategy is to use gourd allies and TP skills. The warriors should concentrate on healing, and use Rouge Punch until their TP runs out, and Hero can attack as well as using the gourd to summon more allies when one gets killed. Ordinary physical attacks won't do much damage to Genbu, around 25-30 HP at level 15, although you might get lucky and make a special attack. (It is possible to defeat him at lower levels but it's very tough going!) After the battle, events take over, and you'll rescue Raichi and return to Byakko's Castle. Hero wants to find out more and sets out for the Kingdom of Gorai to find an immortal sage. Oh, and that's the last you'll see of the warriors as allies. =============================================================================== C H A P T E R O F T H E W I S E .................................... *CHP3 =============================================================================== Locations 1. You'll arrive inside the town and immediately receive your next mission from the village elder. Some Yokai (monsters) have taken over a local mansion and this is causing distress amongst the villagers. There are 8 pots to tempt you here, but there's nothing to find so don't bother searching. You can make a save with the elder, and then, leave this room. Find [NECTAR WATER] and [NECTAR WATER] in pots inside the building to the right with the revive priest, and that's it. You can talk to a couple in the elder's room and one girl outside, but there's really not much to this place besides the usual inn, arms and item shop, and the monk who will revive Raichi and heal you from poison. If you leave town, you'll see the mansion a couple of steps to the northeast. Raichi can equip the Tiger Claw that Hero has been using if you want to save cash. Make sure she has the best defensive gear, and buy the Axe for Hero. Having rescued Raichi at the end of the previous chapter, you get her back for a short time, and she'll be at whatever level she had when you last saw her. Now, you can wander around, fight to raise levels and capture some local monsters in your Crimson Gourd. The two towers at the north east of the world map are both locked and there is no access to the place half circled by mountains, just yet. When Raichi reaches level 11 she'll get a better healing spell: Shakti, and this can help if you decide to keep her around while you level up Hero. I think it's worth while doing so at this point, since those two towers are very tough with Hero on his own, and the higher his level before attempting them, the better. You'll also need the extra cash to buy Jindans which fully heal you. I tried doing the towers scrimping and saving and it took me ages, with many game overs. (Raichi gains her Soul Leech spell at level 15, which means that you can capture and summon monsters with her, as well as with the Crimson Gourd.) Although you can use a Space Shift to travel back to town, you cannot use it inside the towers, so you're going to have to walk back down and out each time you explore... At least, you will if you don't realise that the Ruyi Sphere can be used inside any dungeon or tower to deposit you back outside! Yes, at long last you can escape from a dungeon with this essential item. It will save you many game overs so make sure to buy at least one and replace it each time you use it. (I didn't know this item had this effect when playing the game for the first time, and had used it in the wrong location so it had no effect, and then forgot about it. It makes the game much more manageable, believe me!) ------------------ GO EAST YOUNG MAN! ------------------ ENEMIES LoneBug, Hanbo, RedChimi, Zakkun, Bakegani, FireEater, LandShark, SharkFin, BeiDuck. From Lishu, you can walk all the way east and explore a large area with some very powerful enemies, although you cannot reach the building set in the middle of the mountains. If you want to trap these enemies, then take Raichi with you so you have a better chance of surviving, OR make sure to buy the Space Shift item at Ukei which enable you to transport back to either town. If you don't have Mountain Move (which Raichi gets at level 9) or this item, then you are very likely going to die before you get half way back from this area. The Land Shark has a powerful all party spell that could be very useful if you manage to capture a few of these enemies. It's also worth the trip just to see the BeiDuck and SharkFin monsters. Chinese soup anyone? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HAUNTED MANSION ......................................................... *C32 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You must complete this mission to gain access to Koroso, and the two towers. Walk down two flights of stairs to the basement and ignore the pots as there is nothing to find. o---------------------------o | FIRECHILD x4 (BATTLE) | o---------------------------o | HP : 75 | | Exp. : 1754 | | Gold : 224 | o---------------------------o There's a battle with four FireChild enemies. They cast Wildfire Wheel which damages one person for quite a lot, (around 40-50 HP) but you can just use Ice Law on them all for 50 HP damage with Raichi or Hero at level 13. They won't all use magic, and a physical attack will hurt for around 15 HP damage depending on your equipment and current HP. Two Ice Law spells or one Dragon Rip and one Ice Law will kill them all. You get so much experience from this battle that Raichi may increase her levels by two or three if she's still at level 9. However, there is a nice trick you can use. Raichi is going to leave the party again soon, and if you don't intend to explore the eastern area with her you could let her die before (or during) this battle. That means that Hero will get a whopping 3508 experience points! (And don't be concerned about Raichi's low levels, as this won't matter at all... you'll see that I'm right a bit later!) Return to Lishu and visit the arms shop. The inventory has been upgraded and you should invest in the better Flame Shield and Madara Helmet for Hero. (And for Raichi too, if you afford them now and intend to do more exploring with her in tow.) Hero should also have the Lantian Clothes and the best weapon, which at this point is the Hiryu Axe. Talk to the grateful inhabitants for some clues to help you solve the Buddha statue puzzle in the tower. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. KOROSO (Bon's Dojo) .................................................. *C33 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL ENEMIES Benigumo, Teiko, Horsefly, Kyonshi. After you've finished exploring with Raichi, and killed the enemies inside the Haunted Mansion, investigate the small house in the mountains, halfway between Lishu and Ukei. You'll encounter 4 green Rikkun monsters, but the fight is stopped before it even begins, and if you walk up the steps into the Dojo, you'll find the friendly Bon. He tells Hero to train more and to find an item at the top of the second (right) northern tower, and bring it to him. Raichi stays with him to train, and you will leave the Genbu Blade with Bon. (I'd totally forgotten about this and started to panic when I thought I'd lost it or dropped it or sold it! In fact the game won't let you do any of those things, so there was nothing to worry about.) Walk back down the steps and you overhear a conversation between some old man called Washibu, Leila and Toron, discussing this item, called the Soul Jar. Seems they don't want you to have it, so there's a good chance there's going to be a fight of some kind when you find it. You'll be back on the world map and now your destination is the first of the towers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. UKEI (northern town) ................................................. *C34 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL ENEMIES Ikkakuru, Kyonshi, Teiko. Before heading for the two towers buy a Space Shift item. I know you can't use it inside a building, but after getting nearly destroyed inside a tower and limping to the exit, the last thing you'll want to do is to get killed while making your way back to town. Buy the Ruyi Sphere from Lishu so you don't have to limp at all! Also, sell off spare weaker equipment, and stock up on Regens and maybe one Jindan for emergencies. Yes, I know they are expensive... You will also need Ro Nai Tans as many enemies inflict poison, so with all these requirements and only Hero to carry everything, sell off anything you don't need. You'll find the Kyonshi enemy around here and this one can be a real problem. They summon more of the same enemy, and will keep doing that, so you can easily be facing a group of 5 of them. However, you can quickly gain additional experience if you let them summon more, at least, if you're strong enough to defeat them. Don't use the Hellfire or Hell Mortem spell on these enemies (only available if you're at higher levels) although you can use ordinary fire magic on them. (In fact, if you stay on the forested area just to the east of the central mountains you will only encounter these enemies, and you can quickly raise levels just by defeating groups of them, using any group spell except for Hell Mortem. One enemy gives you 80 experience points if there are 2 of you, double that if it's just Hero on his own.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. SHINKI TOWER ......................................................... *C35 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAP: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/579522/57785 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENEMIES Floor 1: Tetsujin (no gourd) Floor 2: Evil Kashin (no gourd), Tetsubu (no gourd) Floor 3: Daitetsujin (no gourd) Floor 4: EvilSign (no gourd), Unshaku (gourd!) TREASURE Ice Cane, Ro Nai Tan, Blaze Sword, Falcon Claw. Walk to the first tower, and you might have to battle pairs of Ikkakuru on the way, but you can capture these enemies in the gourd. Make sure that you have captured a couple or more Teiko monsters, which can save your life with their helpful Nectar spell. The Teiko also has Fire Wheel magic and saved my life more than once! (And you should also have the best equipment, lots of healing items, a Space Shift and Ruyi Sphere: I think I said that already...) When you reach the first tower you will enter it directly from the world map. Yes, it's now open! I'd suggest that you go straight through the tower dealing with the statues first of all. It's simpler that way, and then, you can return for the treasure once you've refilled your Crimson Gourd. You can also avoid fighting on the way to the tower by using another Space Shift to get you there. UNLOCKING KOKUFO TOWER The first floor has four sets of steps and a Buddha statue at the back. When you reach the statue you'll see a message that its hand seems to move. The people in Ukei gave you hints about what you should do, and you should start by raising its LEFT HAND. First you must say NO to raising the right hand, and there is no corresponding click or signal to tell you that you've done it correctly. However, if you attempt to interact with it again there will be no response.) Take the stairs next to the statue and you'll be at the second floor, and next to another statue. This time raise the RIGHT HAND. Again, take the stairs up the third floor, and this time elect to raise the LEFT HAND. Walk down the room, and take the stairs in the lower right corner. You're now at the top floor, and just need to make your way up to the final statue. Raise the RIGHT HAND. There is no response at all, but if you've done all these correctly, then the second tower will be open. Leave the tower using the Ruyi Sphere and enter the second tower. Leave it immediately, and then it too will be on your list of places accessible with the Space Shift item. Use a Space Shift to return to Ukei, heal, save, buy more healing items and return to obtain all the treasure. TREASURE Take the front or left stairs to the second floor, and check the lower of two pots for the [ICE CANE]. Now you can use this as an item to hit enemies and it will do more damage than your current weapon. Return to the first floor and take the right hand stairs and go up two floors. The lower of the left pots contains a [RO NAI TAN] and the left of the other two has the [BLAZE SWORD] and the right pot has the [FALCON CLAW]. The sword can also be used as an item, the claw cannot. ENEMIES Use the gourd!. It's really the only way to successfully navigate in here, and since only the Unshaku enemy found on the top floor can be captured, it means that you must have already trapped monsters to use inside the Tower. The EvilSign enemy can give you a lot of trouble without using the gourd, since it will leech your strength, and only your spells will be effective. However, if you have already entered the second tower, and obtained the Rekki weapon (or the Ice Cane or Flame Sword inside Shinki Tower) you can use it as an item to attack them, and their Fast Grasp skill isn't effective against this attack. The Tetsubu enemy attacks with chilling freeze, but otherwise won't give too much trouble. The Daitetsujin enemy on the third floor has a powerful physical attack and casts Blazing Flame, and they often come in groups. The only slight relief is that many of its attack will miss when your HP is low. The Unshaku on the fourth floor appears on its own and can be captured, so get lots of this enemy, and it has a powerful Bolt spell that you can use on the groups elsewhere in this tower, and inside the next one. You CAN run away from enemies in the tower and for single ones there seems to be a reasonable chance of success, but I wouldn't advise it against groups, as it can take quite a few turns before you're likely to be successful. After opening the second tower, and finding all the treasure, sell off the excess. Keep the Ro Nai Tan since there are enemies that use poison in Kokufu Tower, and keep the Ice Cane. I sold off the Blaze Sword, (maybe not that wise, but space is very restricted at this point in the game), and also sold the weaker Falcon Claw. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. KOKUFU TOWER ......................................................... *C36 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAP: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/579522/57786- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ENEMIES Floor 1: Karakuri1 (no gourd) Floor 2: Karakuri2 (no gourd) Floor 3: Karakuri3 (no gourd) Floor 4: None ITEMS Rekki, Golden Shell, 50G, Flash Axe, 20 G, Soul Jar. Use a Space Shift to go directly to the tower, or walk there and capture some Reiko and Ikkajuryu enemies along the way. You cannot capture any of the enemies inside this tower so it's advisable to stock up before you enter. From the entrance, walk right and up to obtain the [REKKI] weapon from the left pot. The right one contains nothing. Use the Rekki weapon as an item all the time in here, since you are guaranteed to inflict a set amount of damage on any enemies, and you won't miss. Of course, you won't get a critical hit, but I prefer the higher damage that this weapon can do. The higher Hero's level, the better chance you'll have inside this tower, and it's best to be at around 18 at least. Any lower and you risk the enemies having the first turn. You'll find the Karakuri1 enemy on the first floor, and they spit Blazing Fire at you for around 20 HP damage. Their physical attacks aren't too damaging, but if they appear in groups of more than two it might be best to summon a monster to take some of the pain, and help with the battle. At level 18 you'll have the Bolt spell and this, together with an attack with the Rekki on each of them should get rid of them all. After obtaining the Rekki, return to the entrance and walk up and left and then right to find the first Buddha statue. This works in exactly the same way as the previous tower. Move the first statue's hand to the LEFT. Take the stairs to the second floor and walk left to the statue. Move the hand to the RIGHT. You'll find the same Karakuri enemies here, except they will spurt poisonous liquid onto you, and you cannot avoid being poisoned. (This attack poisons everyone in your party if you've summoned some monsters.) Don't bother healing from this during the fight, but do so afterwards, since you'll quickly lose HP if you don't! Their ordinary attacks are a bit more powerful as well, so this is when things start getting more dangerous. Take the stairs to the left of the floor, and up to the third floor, where you'll find the third Buddha statue. Move the hand to the LEFT. Search the four pots to find some cash and the [FLASH AXE] inside the one in the corner. The top right pot has [50G] and the left lower one has [20G]. There is nothing inside the upper left pot. This floor has more Karakuris, but this time they spit Blazing Flame. Descend the stairs back to floor 2 and now take the stairs at the lower right, which leads to floor 3, but the right hand side of the floor. From the stairs, walk up the floor, and climb the stairs at the top right corner, up to floor 4. You'll see the next Buddha statue just down to the right. Move the hand to the RIGHT. If you've moved all the hands into the correct position you'll be told that a door has opened somewhere. Now, if you're not suffering from poison, and still have some healing items left, you can go down the stairs at the lower right of this floor. Descend one more floor (you're now on floor 2) and you'll reach a small room with a pot. This contains the [GOLDEN SHELL] which is much better armour for Hero. Equip this and climb back up. LEAVE! Yes, seriously. If you've managed to accomplish all this, then you don't want to risk death at the hands of the next boss. Of course with save states it might be easier... In my first game, not knowing what to expect, I climbed the left hand stairs to find the unlocked door, save stated and then discovered I couldn't leave and couldn't defeat the boss. Much better to heal up, and stock up again on healing items and Crimson Gourd monsters. Use a Space Shift to take you back to the tower to avoid losing HP in fights on the way, and return to the third floor. This time, take the lower left stairs, which leads you to a small room where the locked door is now open (after you correctly changed the Buddha statue's arms). Walk forwards to the open door and you'll meet LEILA (Merc: level 32) and WASHIBU (Priest: level 99), who join your party. They have no items or equipment and no spells or skills, so you can't raid them or fight with them. And, in any case, they won't let you leave! Ignore their HP stats as this is completing misleading and gives no indication of their actual HP, although you can safely assume that Washibu has a lot of magic. Climb the stairs to the top floor and you'll find the [SOUL JAR] inside a pot (you need a spare space to pick it up). They want it, and challenge you to a fight. o---------------------------o | LEILA and WASHIBU (BOSS) | o---------------------------o | HP : 250 - 300 (est.)| | Exp. : None | | Gold : None | o---------------------------o This is hard. Level 18 is pushing it a bit, although it is possible, just about! Try raising Hero's levels to 22 if you are having difficulties with this fight and that will give you the protection of additional HP as well as higher speed and strength. There are two of them and just Hero on his own, although you don't have to worry about their physical attacks because neither of them can do much damage to Hero (even at level 18). However, Firewheel from the old man will hurt for around 55-60 HP which is a LOT, and he also has an all party lightning spell that will destroy your allies as it does around 70+ damage to all at once. However, one time when I concentrated my attacks on Leila he never used this magic. He also uses Blazing Flame which targets everyone for high damage, or spits with blazing flame which hurts everyone for around 50-60 HP. The main problem is keeping your HP high enough to withstand repeated magic attacks from Washibu, and the fact that he can kill off all summoned allies with one magic spell!. You'll need three Jindans (ideally) and high enough speed to go first if he gets your HP really low. (Using an item or spell to boost your speed might just help you survive a bit longer, but that's at the cost of carrying another Jindan.) Start by summoning three monster allies, depending on which of the two you want to kill. Spells are ineffective on the old man and, because they are not part of the same group, you cannot use group attacks to target them both. Either use spells and any attacks on Leila, or just attack the old man with physical attacks, and only target one of them! Summon Teiko to keep healing Hero, and use any other allies you have got. If they have spells then go for Leila, if not, go for Washibu. Leila will heal herself with Nectar, but despite that she's the easiest to defeat, because you can use spells on her and she takes more damage from physical attacks. (With the Rekki you can do over 30 HP damage to her each go.) I've tried this fight various ways and really the best strategy is to go for Leila because you can defeat her faster. You need to have at least one ally attacking her as well as Hero, because Nectar will heal her for around 30 HP each time she uses it. Once you've defeated one of them they will both withdraw. LISHU AND KOROSO After the battle you'll be back at Lishu, and instructed to return to see the Sage at Koroso. Do so, and you'll get Raichi back and both of you will increase levels. (This is the effect of the Soul Jar that Bon uses.) Hero increases by 4 levels and Raichi is given enough experience (whatever her level) to match Hero's level. You will both gain a lot of new spells and techniques as well, and it's worthwhile taking a moment to check these out after you regain control of the party. After some more chat about Mao, the evil power behind everything, who wants to distort time and space and rule the world or something... classic bad guy stuff, Bon tells you to go and find Suzaki in a cave. He'll send you there, and tells you that once you go you cannot return. (Don't worry, that's not true!) You could explore the area to the east of Lishu now that you have Raichi back and much higher levels. especially if you want to see the range of monsters and trap some useful ones for the cave. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. BON'S DUNGEON ........................................................ *C37 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAP: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/579522/57943 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENEMIES Floor B1 : JakenA, MasoArh, KakuteiR, FArhat, SadArhat, BukonA Floor B2 : Crusher, WarVajra, Swordsman, Knight, HMadara Stairs 1 : DonTamer (no gourd), Donburi (no gourd) Stairs 2 : MadSnake, FOrochi, Manda Floor B3 : Inazuma, Ryushin, Kurokan, Hyakki, Hellman (no gourd) ITEMS Space Shift, Regen, Shumei, Ryu Sphere, Samite Robe To enter this place talk to Bon, and tell him you're ready. Although he says it's a one way ticket and you cannot get out again, in fact this isn't true. Note the stairs just behind where you start off in here, because you can return to the world map if you climb up here. You'll find yourself at the dungeon entrance but surrounded by mountains in the area to the east of Lishu, and you'll need a Space Shift item, or Raichi's Mountain Move spell, to return to town. When you need to return, simply talk to Bon again, at Koroso, and he'll send you back inside. Before entering the cave, equip Raichi with the Lantian Clothes and give her one of the special weapons you found. I tended to let her use the Flash Axe as an item and she can inflict far more damage with this than she can with her equipped weapon. Stock up on Jindans, Regens, a Ruyi Sphere, so you can leave quickly if you need to, and a Space Shift if you don't want to rely on Raichi having enough MP left to use Mountain Move. At first sight this place can seem confusing, but it's one of those dungeons with repeating areas and is easier to navigate than it first appears! The enemies in here are very specific to the different locations and there are some that can only be found if you explore everywhere. FLOOR B1 From the start, walk up and right, and head up a few steps, and you'll spot some stairs that lead down to the next floor. Go down, and follow the single passage around until you find some pots. Equip the Shumei to Hero. 8 Pots 1 - Nothing, 2 - Nothing, 3 - Space Shift 4 - Regen 5 - Shumei 6 - Ruyi Sphere 7 - Nothing, 8 - Nothing If you're not bothered about raising levels, then just use the Ruyi Sphere to warp out of the dungeon, and head back to town to heal up and save your game, before entering the cave again. Otherwise, make your way back to the entrance, but maybe stay around here for a bit first and capture some Crusher enemies. They are weak to fire but have ice magic and the boss of this place is weak to that element. Back at the start, this time walk straight up, and go right, following the path as it twists and turns, until you reach a T junction. You'll be facing down the screen at this point. If you go to the left of the screen you'll find another set of stairs (Stairs 1), but this leads nowhere. It's a looping stair, and there is nothing to find. However, this is the ONLY place where you'll encounter the DonTamer and Donburi enemies, and they are so cute it's definitely worth your while taking this detour, even if you cannot capture them. To exit, simply take the stairs down, and you will be back where you started. After admiring the developer's creativity (or sheer bloodymindedness!) go right from the junction, and up, when you reach the right hand wall. There's another set of stairs (Stairs 2) just to your left, and you'll find a pot with a [SAMITE ROBE]. Note that these stairs repeat if you walk all the way up or down the right wall, and you'll find another pot, but there's only one treasure! From the stairs, go up and left, and follow the path past some statues until you find another set of stairs in between 4 statues. These take you down to the other section of B2. FLOOR B2 Follow the only path until you reach the paved area where a minor boss awaits. (As soon as you walk up the path to the left of the pots the party will move of their own accord until they reach this visible monster.) o--------------------------o | RAGEKNIGHT BOSS | o--------------------------o | HP : 120 (estimate) | | Exp. : 850 | | Gold : 120 | o--------------------------o Demon Seal (the spell that stops enemies from using their skills and magic) won't work on this boss, but use one of Raichi's powerful single enemy spells (such as Hell Fire, or Demon Wind) and a couple of techniques from Hero and this fight might be over before you know it! Don't bother using the special weapons on him as they hardly do any damage at all, even with Hero. However, there is one major problem with this guy. He has an incredibly powerful magic spell: Wind Rambler, that hurts both for up to 80 HP (or more) damage, and he might use this twice in a row. He might not use it all, but you should not take any chances and keep both at full health, as well as using your best attacks on him to kill him before he has a chance to kill you! Oh, and he's fast, and is likely to attack you first. FLOOR B3 Go down stairs in the corner of the cave. (Or leave and return if you're low on MP and TP and want to heal, because there's another boss fight ahead!) Once inside this room, hang around for a while before walking up to the adjoining cave where you can see the boss waiting. There are some very useful enemies to have on your side and you can absorb all of them. Raichi will have her Soul Leech spell and she can collect and summon her own set of allies. The more monsters you have on your side the better! Note that Ryushin has the Shadow Binder spell and this will slow down the final boss and save some of Raichi's MP for other things. o--------------------------o | GARUDA (again!) BOSS | o--------------------------o | HP : 220 (estimate) | | Exp. : 500 | | Gold : 1200 | o--------------------------o You should remember this guy. It's Garuda whom Hero fought alone in Byyako Castle, and he ran off. Well, now you can kick his ass! His main skill is that he can seal your arts and has high defense against everything. Don't bother using the special weapons, such as the Flash Axe, as they have virtually no effect on him at all! Even most spells won't hurt him. The best way to deal with him is to use boosted physical attacks and techniques, (at least, until he blocks your arts) and summon monsters with high offense such as the Inazuma and Swordsman. Just keep whacking him until he dies, and since he doesn't really hit for much damage or use any other spells, this is a simple battle to win. ENEMIES After the battle, it's a good idea to leave, stock up again, heal and save, because you have still not encountered the real boss of this place! Also, you'll run into some very dangerous enemies in this room. The Hellman uses the powerful Hellfire spell which will hurt one for around 100 HP. They cannot be absorbed, and if you meet three of them they could wipe you out in one round! Oops! In fact this happened to me twice, and they really are very dangerous! The best advice is to hope that they don't use their spells, and that they don't mount a surprise attack. You should use your best techniques on them to take them out as fast as you can. Sorry, I've got no tricks for these guys beyond suggesting use the Ice Cane and Frozen Arrow spell and take them out one at a time if they come in ones or twos OR the Duanyao Quan technique on them all. You really need high levels, and 26 is probably about right to survive this far! Inazuma is a useful enemy to capture, with high attack power as well as a special thunderbolt attack so you need to be beware of this. I found that I couldn't capture the helpful Hyakki at level 23, but I did at level 26, and this monsters has the Nectar spell. Another reason why higher levels are better! If you do leave, make sure to buy a Ruyi Sphere and Space Shift item to replace any you used, just in case. And if you go off exploring and raising levels, make sure to save and keep an eye on your HP. It's very easy to think you've got the hang of things and don't need to heal up that often, until you suddenly find a mass group of magic using Land Knights surprises the team. Oops, again! REACHING THE BOSS There's a good chance you'll have a lot of fights on your hands as you walk up the room towards the grey paving area. Keep healed up and when you walk between the walls you'll automatically move forwards to meet Suzaku. o---------------------------o | SUZAKU BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 1600 (estimate) | | Exp. : 260 | | Gold : 120 | o---------------------------o This guy is red, and as you'd expect he uses Fire magic. Wildfire Wheel is a powerful attack on one, (though not as bad as the Hellman's Hellfire), Blazing Flame a weak fire technique on all, and Samadhi Flame is a more powerful fire attack on everyone. This will kill any summoned monster, which is annoying! Use Frozen Arrow on him for nearly 100 HP damage from Raichi, and if you boost her magic with an item (such as the White Jewel) more than that! Summon Ryushin, that monster that you captured in the cave before you meet the boss, and his spell, Shadow Binder, can slow down the boss's movements. Fast Grasp also works on him and leeches his strength, weakening his physical attacks. The Crusher monster can hurt him for around 25-30 HP with its ice magic, but it's very vulnerable to the fire magic, so it probably won't last long! Lohan will boost Hero's strength and it's best to use his equipped weapon (the Shumei which you found) in the hopes of triggering a critical strike. If you run out of healing items, use Raichi's spells, but try and keep back some MP for her Frozen Arrow attack. If you're getting low on everything then go all out, and don't bother healing, as there's a good chance you will evade attacks with low HP, and you might just manage to kill him before he kills you! You don't have to worry about getting of here, because you'll be taken directly to the next chapter. =============================================================================== C H A P T E R O F T H E V I O L E N T .............................. *CHP4 =============================================================================== Locations 1. NYOKA VILLAGE 2. ENDLESS CAVE 3. HIKODEN CASTLE 4. HIKODEN CASTLE DUNGEON Prelude This chapter begins with a kind of explanation from guy called Seiobo, who you encountered after the battle with Suzaki, and you're in a place called Tenjokai. It seems this is some heavenly location. Hard to tell really as it looks the same as everywhere else. But Hero gets some news: his dad was king of the southern seas and his real name is Ryujin. Seiobo broke the Ryujin Blade into 4 Hokens after Hero's dad died trying to stop the evil Mao. Now your task is to defeat Mao and find the remaining Hokens. One of the enemies is Toron, whom we met already, and this is Hero's brother. After this interlude you're in the village of Nyoka, near Mao's castle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Then, climb up the stairs and check the two pots for a [MONSTER MENACE], an item that increases speed, in the top one, and a [MAFUGAN] which seals enemy arts, in the lower one. You'll get a hint of what awaits you from the couple here, though I don't think I ever found the immortal. (Maybe I did but didn't know it?) Talk to the rest of the citizens to find out more about the threat from Mao. Apart from the usual inn and shops there's nothing else to find here, but you'll be seeing a lot of this place! It's the only town and you're going to need to do a lot of levelling up before you can tackle the final area and Mao's castle. You're also going to need lots of cash if you want to buy the stuff on sale here. Start off buying the Protect Dogi for Raichi and anything else you can afford: the better shields and helmets are cheap enough, and stock up again on Regens and Jindans. Save up to buy the Onmyo Sword for Hero as this weapon is the best you'll find for a long time. Make sure you always have a Ruyi Sphere as the next dungeon is long and tough, and you will need to return to Nyoka when you reach the top of the castle. Now, the next stage of the game is in two sections. First of all aim to reach the castle and after that you can use Mountain Move to get there without a walk. Then, get to the top of Mao's castle and defeat the boss there, and you'll find a new companion. I know this is a bit of a spoiler, but it's worth knowing now as it will save you a lot of problems if you go all out to achieve this goal. After that, you've got lots of bosses to defeat and you'll need this ally, as well as all the Jindans and equipment you can buy and find. ENEMIES Fight the enemies close to the town to raise levels and earn enough money for the best equipment. You'll find many of the local monsters give a lot of experience points: the Dokuari, a small blue poisonous insect nets 740 for each one killed and so do most of the rest of them. The Sickle enemy will often appear in large groups and you should destroy them quickly for copious experience points, and to avoid their powerful Hellfire spells! Take care when you meet Orochi. You cannot capture this monster and it's resistant to most attacks, as well as having a powerful form of Blazing Flame that targets everyone in the party. At lower levels it's best to use one Frozen Arrow spell or Demon Wind and a physical attack to kill them one at a time, and they have around 100 HP. The weapons used as items don't seem to work on them. Unfortunately they often appear in large groups with the FMadara which also uses fire magic, although this enemy is more susceptible to ice attacks of any kind. FMadara might drop a Flame Staff which is handy when used as an item to attack an ice enemy. (If you don't want it, sell it for 2250.) It's best to heal from poison in a battle or at the town, since your game might freeze if you do so on the world map. It doesn't always happen, but it might. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. ROUTE TO MAO'S CASTLE ................................................ *C42 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENEMIES Orochi (no gourd), FMadara, DeadWitch, Kojin, Pappanda You'll see three cave openings just north of the town and each one leads directly to the land to the northeast. Enter the first one and walk east, then north, and turn to the east. Or, for a faster route, enter the third one, and this takes you to the cave to the east. Walk west, over the hills and you'll find the castle. When you arrive, retreat, and use Mountain Move to go back to Nyoka, save and heal, and then use a Space Shift to return directly to the castle (saving on MP use). ENEMIES As soon as you enter the hilly area between the mountains the enemies change, and you won't meet any Orochi: whew! The DeadWitch uses Hellfire on one, and the Kojin uses Ice Law. Both these enemies can be captured, as can the cute Pappanda. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. ENDLESS CAVE ......................................................... *C43 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENEMIES Shoki, YoraiMon ITEMS None This cave is situated at the southwest corner of the land below the castle, and it is really endless! At least, I reached floor 30 (yes, I counted!) and found nothing. You can keep going along the paths and down the stairs to the next path and on and on and on, but there is no point, and the enemies in here give very little experience compared to those on the world map. To return to the world map simply go back up the stairs and you'll be there, whichever floor you reached. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. HIKODEN CASTLE ....................................................... *C44 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAP: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/579522/57954 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i. FIRST CASTLE ENEMIES Entrance : Shukoki, BukonR, JakenR, SokenR, MasoRas Floor 2 : RedHot, Headless Floor B1 : DarkArmor Floor 3 : Azatofu, Yogsotofu Floor 4 : GoldKnight Cave : RockChild, Pretender ITEMS Sari, Moonlit Cutter, Golden Shell, Tai Bai Sutra, Monster Menace, Ashoka Clothes, Bone Cutter, Battle Gong. At level 27 Hero gains the useful Frozen Arrow spell, and Raichi will have the more powerful fire spells of Dark Way and Body Death so this is a reasonable level to reach before tackling this place. As ever, higher would be better, especially because Raichi learns Mahara at level 28 and this spell heals one ally for 200 HP, even though it costs 82 MP each time. As soon as you enter the path to the castle you are likely to run into mixed groups of MasoRas, BukonR and JakenR. Annoying because you cannot target them all at once and must pick them off one at a time. MasoRas bite will cause poison and sometimes enemies will run off if you don't kill them quickly: BukonR has 120 HP so it can take a while if you don't use powerful spells. However, it's best to use physical attacks and the "item" weapons on these enemies to save on MP, as they don't have any spells, and if your HP is getting low (under 30) you'll evade most of their attacks. Shukoki has even higher HP but only appears alone and he's a good one to capture for his Demon Thunder spell. At the end of the path you enter a room with two sets of stairs. Take the stairs up, into a room with two pots at the top of the area containing [MOONLIT CUTTER] and [SARI]. Sell the Sari as it isn't as good as the Protect Dogi, but the Moonlit Cutter is a good weapon for Raichi. In this room you'll encounter large groups with RedHot and Headless but they look more fearsome than they really are. Return down stairs and take the stairs at the left to arrive at a long corridor (B1) full of Dark Armor monsters. Although they often appear in large groups, these monsters don't pose too much of a challenge, as they have no spells and low HP. Make your way up the passage and climb the next set of stairs into a room. Take the stairs here, and again on the next floor and you'll end up in another long corridor (Floor 3). This is where things get a bit tougher! You have to make your way to the top of this long corridor and you'll find some dangerous enemies that tend to appear in groups of 4. The Azatofu casts Binding Freeze which won't hurt much, and their attacks don't harm a lot, but you'll probably encounter a lot of them. Further up the corridor you'll find the Yogsotofu and these have a devastating suicide attack that can destroy you all if your HP is low. (It does around 90-100 HP damage to everyone.) Always target them first if they appear with the Azatofu. However, the good news is that they CAN be captured and you should aim to do this. They are very useful to have on your side when fighting the next boss and when faced with large groups of difficult foes. I'd suggest capturing lots of these for both Hero and Raichi and then, you'll be able to defeat large groups of enemies with no trouble at all! Ignore the stairs that appear half way up this corridor as these just take you back down to a small room with more stairs down to another room, where the stairs take you back to B1, the endless corridor at the start. (This is a short cut if you want to leave the castle and don't have a Ruyi Sphere. However you will find the high HP GoldKnight monster, and this is useful to capture for its all enemy Wind Rambler spell.) Carry on to the end of the corridor and go through a hidden opening in the wall. This takes you out of the first part of the castle, and into a cave with two new enemies and some pots to raid. THE CAVE [ASHOKA CLOTHES] is in the lower left of the left four pots, and the [BONE CUTTER] weapon is found in the top right of the right four pots, with a [BATTLE GONG] item in the lower right of these pots. Equip the weapon to Raichi. Capture the Pretender monster in this cave and you can use his Samadhi Flame spell when you fight the boss. Beware if you face two of these monsters in a surprise attack as that spell is very powerful if they both happen to use it, doing around 50 HP damage to everyone. They might drop the item KAN KON TAN which is a revive item! I discovered this purely by chance when I used it on Raichi (not knowing the possible effect) when she had low HP during a battle with a Pretender. She was taken out with the Samadhi Flame spell and then brought back to life with full HP! Hold on to any of these you find, and maybe keep fighting the Pretenders until you collect two or three. Carry on through the cave and up the passage, and you'll arrive outside again, and at the bottom of some steps that lead to the second part of the castle. (When you get this far, it's probably time to head back to the village again, restock, sell off anything you don't need, and buy as many Jindans as you can carry. On the next trip through the first part of the castle try to save on MP by just using physical attacks, and capture more Yogsotofu monsters ready for the next section.) ii. SECOND CASTLE ENEMIES Stairs : FireKnight, IceAge Floor 1 : FireKnight, IceAge Floor 2 : Kaimeiryu, Ryusenki (up lower left and right stairs) Floor 3 : Kokunryu, Raseryu Floor 4 : Ryujinki (Nectar spell), Maiden Floor 4 : RageKnight (no gourd) (stairs) ITEMS Golden Shell, Monster Menace, Tai Bai Sutra FLOOR 1 Walk up the stairs and head left, and then, up the central area, keeping to the left. Make your way around the walls of the only passage until you come to the bottom left of the area. Climb the stairs and search the lower left pot for another [GOLDEN SHELL] armor. The rest contain nothing and this armor is only 1 point stronger than the Protect Dogi so you could just not bother at all! Anyhow, if you do, equip this to Raichi. After this, back on the ground floor, walk to the left of the area and you'll see a narrow passage next to the outer wall. Follow this all the way up, and right, running the gauntlet of loads of FireKnights and IceAges. You'll encounter two sets of ice or fire enemies on this floor. Use the Flash Axe with Raichi on the Ice ones to good effect if you want to preserve your MP. The FireKnights are slightly more dangerous with their Wildfire Wheel spells and higher HP, and both enemies tend to come in groups of 4, and in wave after wave of them. Yes, the encounter rate is higher than usual around here. Use Demon Ice on the fire ones and Wildfire Wheel on the ice ones if you want to get rid of them fast. You could capture both sets of enemies and use them on each other, but it's probably quicker just to kill them off yourself. At the far right of the area, the floor opens up again and you can walk down, to find a set of stairs leading to the next floor. FLOOR 2 Here, you'll meet the Kaimeiryu and Ryusenki enemies, often together. The former attacks with a leech strength spell but you can still use the "item" weapons without this effecting you, and the latter has a powerful Dark Way one person spell. Both can be captured, but get rid of the Ryusenki first. Make your way around to the stairs at the left of the area and climb up to floor 3. FLOOR 3 There are a couple more items to find first, if you walk past the stairs and down the right of floor 3: [MONSTER MENACE] is in the upper of the right two pots and the [TAI BAI SUTRA] strength and wisdom boost item is inside the lower of the left two pots. You can also capture the Raseryu monster on this floor and it has the Samadhi Flame spell which will be useful against the boss. The bright green Kokunryu monster found on this floor can sometimes drop the Hiryu Claw weapon. Climb the stairs in the middle of this floor, and you'll lose control and be in a boss battle! You should be at around level 32 (at least!) for this battle. FLOOR 4 o---------------------------o | SEIRYU BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 1550 (estimate) | | Exp. : 1425 | | Gold : 600 | o---------------------------o REWARD: RYUJIN BLADE As you might surmise from his bright blue and purple appearance, and the fact the game has thrown all those fire knights at you, this boss isn't a fire using one! His skills are Frozen Arrow (an attack on one that will hurt for around 50-60 HP) and Spirit Ice on everyone (that does slightly less damage), together with a special lightning skill that hurts everyone for around 30 HP. He also spits (rudely) with chilling freeze. Use Wildfire Wheel on him for over 100 HP damage with Raichi, and summon monsters such as the Pretender, FireKnight, and GoldKnight, not forgetting the suicidal Tofu guy! Keep healed with Raichi's spells or items, and keep up the pressure on him until he sinks into oblivion. (Don't worry if Raichi dies, so long as you beat him and have a Ruyi Sphere to get out of there, and Hero will get 2850 experience points if he's the only one left.) After the battle you'll find that you're back with the three people who've been causing you a lot of trouble: Toron appears with Washibu and Leila. But fortunately there isn't another boss battle, and after some discussion you'll get a new ally: TORON! He joins you at level 35, and equipped with the Garuda Sword, Dragon Scale armour, Flame Shield and Garuda Helmet. He also has a Wind Cloth (minor attack item), Mafugan, Binding Rope, 2 Regens and a Jindan. If you talk to the other two again they simply say that they'll be waiting in Nyoka Village, and they don't even offer to heal you or let you make a save, which is very mean spirited. Really, it seems, that there's nothing for it now but to return the village, heal, buy new stuff and return here to start the final onslaught on the evil Mao's dungeon! However, don't be in a hurry to leave. (I did in my first game, because I didn't know about this, and had to fight my way back through the castle again.) If you've still got some HP and items to spare, you could carry on and enter the dungeon, because then you will have the option of warping directly there. Definitely worth the extra risk (especially if you have access to save states). Also, equip the Ryujin weapon to Hero. This is the Genbu Blade transformed: it's very powerful, and the best weapon in the game. ROUTE TO THE CASTLE DUNGEON Before leaving the boss room capture a couple of Ryujinki monsters: they have the Nectar spell which can help during long boss fights. On the way down the stairs to the dungeon watch out for the RageKnight. You cannot capture it and it has that devastating Wind Rambler spell that hits everyone for around 60-100 HP damage. (It's the same enemy you met before in Bon's dungeon.) Keep everyone in good health, as it's your only defense! Walk down the far left of the boss room and there's a narrow passage that leads to a doorway. Enter the door and keep going down the stairs until you reach a room with a green floor. Walk up through a hole in the wall and you'll enter the castle dungeon. Use a Ruyi Sphere to leave, and you'll be back outside the Castle. Attempt to use the Mountain Move spell or Space Shift and you'll see that the Dungeon has been added to the list of locations. Return to Nyoka, save, heal, shop, and now you can warp back directly to the dungeon. Makes everything so much easier! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. HIKODEN CASTLE DUNGEON .............................................. *C45 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAP: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/579522/57955 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENEMIES Totetsu, RageKnight (no gourd), Kaisenryu, Triton, Teiko, Mugenryu, Tomaryu ITEMS Burning Sword PREPARATION Ideally, raise Hero and Raichi's levels to the same as Toron. At level 35 Raichi gains the Bhita spell which replenishes some TP, and the life saving Dhara spell that heals all allies (including any summoned monsters) for around 100 HP. Raise her level to 37 and you finally get the Soul Return spell that allows you to revive someone. This is is really only of limited use since Toron is the only person you can revive: if Raichi is dead you won't be allowed to use any of her spells. If you choose to level up around Nyoka, then you could allow Toron to die in battle so he doesn't gain any experience, and all points will be shared by the other two. You won't find anything of use in the Dungeon beyond that one sword, so make sure everyone has all the Jindans they can carry and check on your equipment. Toron can equip the same things as Hero, (apart from the Ryujin sword) although his Dragon Scale armor is just as good as the Protect Dogi so there's no need to replace that. You'll notice that Hero has acquired an additional weapon after the battle and chat in the castle: it's the Genbu Blade upgraded! (I hadn't even noticed I had acquired this weapon for quite a while, so I'm just making sure you know!) Equip this (the Ryujun Blade) and give the Onmyo weapon to Toron. Only Hero can carry and equip this blade, so there's no choice about this. Save your game with the priest in town before setting out, because after you've beaten the game, you can reload this save, carry on playing, and explore the secret map. FOUR DEVAS AND A MAO! Yes, there are a lot of bosses in the final dungeon, but the good news is that once you've defeated one, it won't appear again. If you leave the dungeon after beating one or more of the Devas then you can save your game again, restore health, and replace any Jindans you've used up. You'll have plenty of cash by this point. If you want to be safe and secure it's a good idea to leave after beating each boss, but you could manage to finish off all four Devas in one run through the dungeon if you capture and summon allies. ROUTE THROUGH DUNGEON This cave appear confusing at first, but it's really very simple. The map repeats itself, and all you need do is make your way north following the green path as it winds back and forth. From the start, ignore the path straight ahead, and turn right and then up. You'll see an exit to the right, flanked by some grey statues, but you cannot access this area, instead, you'll find the same place repeated higher up the cavern. You'll encounter single Totetsu monsters at the start of the dungeon and this enemy has no dangerous attacks except for a paralysis skill that she uses on one person. Use Raichi's Kundali spell if you want to heal this, but you should be able to defeat the enemy with just two normal attacks so it's not worth wasting MP. The main threat is from the RageKnight if he surprises you and uses that WindRambler spell that can damage everyone for anything from 60-100 HP. Try to attack him hard and fast, and hope he doesn't use this spell from the start. He will though, and the only real defence from it is to keep everyone in good health. That makes it expensive fighting him, but you cannot use the gourd on him so there's really no option. At least he only appears alone. Keep HP high enough to survive this spell at all times while on this floor. Follow the path up, then, go right to the right wall, up again, left, down, right, down, and left, to the grey paving and the exit. It's just one path with no other turnings. Told you it was simple! As soon as you enter the opening you'll be in a battle with the first of many bosses. As soon as you enter the central room events will take over and everyone will be poisoned. After that you've got a boss to defeat. o---------------------------o | BAKUENRYU BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 1400 (estimate) | | Exp. : 903 | | Gold : 300 | o---------------------------o Apart from inflicting poison on you all before the battle this monster uses Wildfire Wheel and Samadhi Flame magic, as well as a shooting thunderbolts that damage everyone for around 50 HP. He also has a weak blazing flame skill that won't do more than around 10-15 HP damage. His physical attacks are fairly weak, but he tends to prefer spells. Use a spell or item to boost strength if you wish, and just use physical attacks or techniques with Hero and Toron, and Frozen Arrow with Raichi. Delay works on him but Binding Charm won't. You don't need to bother healing poison during the battle as you won't lose HP from this status effect. After you kill him, heal up the poison before moving on. Go through the room and up the stairs into a new area. Follow the single path around and capture or defeat the Kaisenryu enemy here using fire spells: Wildfire Wheel doesn't use too much MP and is very effective. They might appear in pairs, but are more often found alone. Check the pots in the middle of the room to obtain the [BURNING SWORD] from the lower left pot. Equip this to Raichi as it is stronger than any other weapon she can use. This is a good point at which to retreat before fighting the next boss, especially if MP is getting low, although if you heal with Jindans and have a good supply of gourd monsters you could carry on and defeat the next boss. Enter the opening in the north wall and you'll be in another room, with the second boss. o---------------------------o | GEBAKU BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 2000 (estimate) | | Exp. : 966 | | Gold : 700 | o---------------------------o There's no preamble this time and you're straight into the fight with this skull headed sword wielding oddity. He has a skill where he shakes the ground with a terrible voice, but his bark isn't that effective and this only does around 10-15 damage to everyone, as does his weak Blazing Flame skill. His main magic attack is Body Death which damages everyone for around 60-80 HP. Fire and ice magic do around the same damage to him with Wildfire Wheel and Frozen Arrow managing 80 HP hurt (with Raichi at level 34), but Demon Thunder seems to be the best magic to use, and Shukoki has this magic so he's a good monster to summon. Boost strength for Hero and Toron with items or their own spells, and use a technique or two for additional damage. How you approach this battle depends on whether or not you're trying to save MP for the next bosses. If you're intending to leave the cave then go all out with spells, skills and summoned monsters and utilise Ryujinki to heal with his Nectar spell. Note that if you leave and return, you can go back up the stairs into the castle to capture more of this useful monster. Carry on through the boss room and down the stairs to the next floor where you'll see two lines of pillars. The Triton enemy appears here and it can be captured for its Samadhi Flame magic and high HP (280). Walk left and enter the next opening, where you'll encounter the third (very cute and very easy) boss. o---------------------------o | PAPPARYU BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 1500 (estimate) | | Exp. : 800 | | Gold : 400 | o---------------------------o This is an easy battle to win even if you don't use any summoned monsters. The blue boss bites one for not a lot of damage and uses a Blazing Flame skill for a lot less on everyone (around 10-15 HP). He will attack one with Wildfire Wheel for around 50 HP damage (depending on your levels) and that's it. Nothing too dangerous at all. Just use Lohan to boost strength for the guys and attack normally, and use a low MP spell such as Wildfire Wheel or Frozen Arrow which will do the same amount of damage. Head through the opening in the room and down the stairs into a larger room with statues and grey paving. You'll find that old friend the Teiko again here, and you could collect a couple for their Nectar spells, but given their low HP they won't survive long enough to be much use to you. The Mugenryu has high HP and ice magic so that's a better one to capture. Enter the opening in the north wall of this room and Hero will be led a merry dance all around the room as he loses control of his senses. Just go with flow for a while until Shoen and King Byakko turn up to help you out. After that, you'll fight the fourth Deva. o---------------------------o | YOSHO BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 1200 (estimate) | | Exp. : 780 | | Gold : 600 | o---------------------------o Yosho can heal himself with Nectar and he's stupid enough to do this even when he's at full health, so that saves you some trouble from his attack spells. He uses the powerful all party spell, Body Death, which will hurt everyone for around 100 HP damage. Make sure to keep the party healed (using Raichi's Dhara spell) so they have over 200 HP in case he uses this twice in a row and is faster than you! The Flash Axe or Rekki does less damage to this guy for some reason, and the usual fire and ice spells won't harm him as much as usual, so I think he's fairly resistant to magic attacks. It's annoying to summon a good monster and find that one Body Death spell destroys it before it can do much, so if you do summon anyone make sure it is one of the local monsters that has very high HP. In the end, straightforward physical attacks and techniques work best with this boss. Time to take stock! Check on your MP, TP, items and how many gourd monsters you have left after all this. (I know you can't see those, but you should have a good idea if you've still got enough for both Hero and Raichi). If you're in any doubt then leave, save, stock up, and return. Buy a couple of Battle Gong items that boost strength and these will help in the final battle. (I went through here a few times and although I had items to spare I usually had run out of MP by this point which makes me nervous. One of the most frustrating things is the lack of MP healing items necessitating continuous retreat, so that's what I do at this point.) Floor B5 Leave the room and you're in a small area with the Tomaryu enemies to fight and capture. Their HP is not all that high and they have the Spirit Ice spell. Descend the stairs and walk up a long corridor where there are no enemies at all. A bit strange considering the way this game usually throws encounters at you at every step, but I guess it's to warn that the final boss is close, and that you should take stock of your team now. Make sure everyone has one of the weapons you can use as an item, as this can save a lot of trouble if you run out of MP: you'll soon see why! As for levels to beat the game: on this run through I knew what I was doing (more or less!) and beat the game with them all at level 35/36, but I was at level 40 in my previous game, having wasted lots of effort in walking back and forth through the Castle. o---------------------------o | GREAT MAO BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 2000 (estimate) | | Exp. : 1166 | | Gold : 1000 | o---------------------------o He probably won't do much for a while beside hitting one person at a time for not much damage. However, when he shoots lightning from his fingernails you'll get a slight shock with anything from 60 - 80 HP damage to everyone. He will use Shadow Binder to slow one person's movements down, which means he's likely to go first for each round, preventing you from casting a healing spell before he attacks again (if he uses this on Raichi). He seems to use this spell on one character and then another, but you can counter it with the Boost spell, or an item such as Monster Menace. If he uses Hell Mortem you could be in trouble as this can do 80 HP damage to everyone even at high levels (40). Other than that, he's not that difficult... but then you're straight into another battle. o---------------------------o | LARVA BOSS | o---------------------------o | HP : 2500 (estimate) | | Exp. : 100 (each) | | Gold : 1 | o---------------------------o Yes, this is the real boss, the Larva that was controlling everyone all this time! Now, you might get lucky and start off with some powerful attacks (I got two direct hits on the first turn!) but this isn't going to last for long. The Larva has the spell Fast Grasp and that will leech the strength of each ally he targets with it. And it really does kill off your attack power until you find that you're only managing 1 HP damage! His ordinary physical attack is nothing to worry about, but if he "bites" then this is very dangerous and can do around 130-150 HP damage to one. Fortunately he only manages one attack per round, so you'll survive this as long as you keep everyone healed. After a while he will use Delay which slows down movement for everyone. He can also shoot thunderbolts which is even worse news, as it will hurt everyone for around 80-120 HP or more. He'll keep using these all spells. After having her strength leeched, I tried using Raichi's techniques, and the Qigong Strike is quite effective, even if it makes her fall unconscious and out of control for the next turn. You can also boost strength back up with the Lohan spell or an item, such as the Battle Gong, and the Boost spell will boost speed. This is the solution to the Fast Grasp: it does not effect skills or magic, and you can use a weapon as an item with just the same attack power as normal. I wouldn't bother with the weaker techniques with the two guys, as they are not that effective, and you're better off hoping for a critical hit with your ordinary weapon attack, at least, while you've still got strength! Even if you're running low in all departments and can't remove the lack of strength status effect, so long as you have enough Jindans to keep healing and the weapons you use as items, you can carry on hitting the Larva and getting in some damage. Keep summoning monsters, and at least they might be the targets of the Fast Grasp spell instead of your characters. You never know, you might even kill him, and beat one of the toughest RPGs ever made! (It doesn't matter if everyone else is dead, so long as Hero survives the battle, and you'll be taken out of there!) -------------------------------- T H E E N D --------------------------------- There are a few ending scenes with King Byakko and Shoen, and our intrepid duo return to Gosokan Dojo. The ending credit sequence is rather sweet. :) =============================================================================== P O S T G A M E ...................................................... *CHP5 =============================================================================== After beating the game, you'll be taken back to the start screen. Select the "load" option and this will load the game at the last save. You'll have the levels and equipment from that final save, and you can continue playing. Enter the "Endless Cave" and this is now a portal to a new location. Keep going through the towers and cave openings and you'll end up in a large map, although there are no towns. B E S T I A R Y ..................................................*BEST =============================================================================== Note that it appears that some monsters cannot be captured with the gourd because you won't yet have found it. However, they CAN be captured if you visit the whole world map after beating the game. A few monsters can never be captured, even then, and that includes all bosses. Some locations are very precise and you will only find those monsters at that specific location (such as the endless stairs in Bon's Cave in the Chapter of the Wise). Monster names had to be shortened for this translation, and I've added in the full names where possible, thanks to the translation notes written by aishsha. Also thanks to those notes for the names of some monsters I haven't yet spotted. I've listed these separately because I'm really not sure that they appear in the game, since I've played it for endless hours and never found them. Please let me know if you track them down! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NAME ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HP : View when summoned from the gourd. C R E D I T S .......................... *CRED =============================================================================== ------------- DRAFT DETAILS ------------- October 23rd Decided to post a skeleton FAQ to motivate me to get the rest done! Still got a lot of monsters' details to find, and I've not worked out exactly when everyone learns their skills and spells so the levels section is incomplete, as well as no actual walkthrough... October 27th Version 0.25: This is just a skeleton guide for now, and only the game basics and some of the lists are complete. Started the walkthrough now. November 30th Version 0.75: Up to Hikoden Castle Januray 6th 2010 Version 1.00: Walkthrough complete. (Still some character levels and enemy details to add.) January 13th 2010 Version 1.2 Added lists for characters' spells and skills. ---------- THANKS TO: ---------- Thanks to the creators of this charming game, and the translators and hackers who made a translation patch for it. Thanks to aishsha who not only did the work on the patch, but gave me permission to reference notes on the monsters. Thanks to GameFAQs for hosting my FAQs. Thanks to Psycho_Penguin for playing the game with me and working out how to get past what appeared to be an impenetrable barrier to progress. Thanks to Saikyo Mog for finding a creative way to continue playing when a deadly glitch struck, and once again, telling me about a game I'd never have considered playing, but ended up writing a FAQ! =============================================================================== V I I .
