It was only released in Japan. The game is the first of three Sherlock Holmes games for the NES, but unlike this one the other two are pure adventures. The title translates to something like 'The Case of the Count's Daughter's Abduction'. The guide uses Shift-JIS to display Japanese characters in .txt form. If you cannot see them automatically and just see some garbled font, set your browser encoding or file viewer manually. It is recommended that you view the file in a fixed font such as Courier New as some of the tables with Shift-JIS will look odd without it. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== Money is important, you need it to travel around and purchase items. Gain more money by beating up people on the main road. For some reason every person in this game is hostile towards you, and Sherlock is depicted as a thief and robber. Each person is worth 30 pounds. Beating up people in houses, the park or sewers increases your rating. It is not affected by the people you knock out on the streets to collect money. A 100% rating is required near the end, where you will need it to move on. If you keep doing this while you are hunting down items and messages you will automatically get close to this number. In the center is your cash (depicted with a pound sign), the amount of keys you hold and the amounts of bullets available. On the right is your inventory which will only add but you never lose an item. They are described in the next section. Damage is weak but keeps you distant from the enemies. Key Opens locked doors. There are not as many as you might think. Bullets Ammo for the pistol, comes in 10s. The two doors next to the station sign are not it, so slightly more right. Incidentally, the first door right of the station has a guy selling a medicine bottle for 100 pounds, and the right door replenishes your health a little for free, go a little too far and you will lose energy for just walking into the large house next to he park though. Inside the correct house, go up the first ladder on the right and walk into the painting. You have just found the all-important magnifying glass. Leave and enter the Park. Walk right, drop down and enter the passage to the second section. Continue right and drop down until you reach the bottom right area. Check the bench with your magnifying glass until you get MESSAGE NO.4. Exit the park. Drop down into the sewers and reach the bottom left corner. Jump right past the door and continue to the right side. Before the second-last ladder on the right is a desk. Investigate with the magnifying glass to find MESSAGE NO.10. The right door of these is an item shop which sells a knife and bullets. Jump into the sewers and run right to find a tunnel. On the other side, start going left but climb up the second ladder you get to. Jump left and look through the barred window next to the second ladder you get to after this. You will find MESSAGE NO.13. The locked green house is pitch black so you will need a lamp first. When you have one, use it to show the surroundings. Go left a few steps and investigate the coat hanger to find MESSAGE NO.9. Continue and enter the door in the bottom left corner. After defeating the boss, walk right at the top to a ladder which only leads to a suspended platform with two chairs. The power up is at the bottom of this ladder. Exit the house on the left side. The left door of the house next to it is a gambling house. Bet 100 to get a 1- in-3 chance to win 300 pounds. The right door of this house has a quiz. You have to get the word correct or you lose a lot of health. This is normally gained from the boss but you do not have to beat him if you already know the answer. The answer is "ユキノハナ". All cities but London also have this quiz but I will only mention the answers from now on, you have to get all of these correct in order to move on later in the game. There is nothing in the sewers in this city. Unlock the door next to the sewers entrance. Inside, run left over the gaps and take the first long ladder half-way up. Step right and over the two small gaps to reach a painting which contains MESSAGE NO.8. Enter the park. Drop down on the right and enter the passage. On the other side, go right to find a trash can which contains a free lamp! Go far left to find another passage to the third section. Here, go left first and up the double ladder. Check the tree between the benches for MESSAGE NO.2. Return right and crouch at the lamp next to the exit (on the right of it). If you did this correctly, you will warp to the boss area. A few hits will knock him out, falling down not kill him. He will often only reappear when you move around a bit. When he is dead, climb up on the left side and jump over to the tree to gain a health power up. This is what we came here for, in case you were wondering. Take the only way out to get back to the city. The house to the right of the park is the item shop. The main thing to get is keys. Finally, the house on the left of the station has the quiz. You can pay him between 100 and 550 pounds but obviously you do not need to as you will be using this guide. The large mansion is the quiz house, the answer is "タニノムシ". The small entry on the side needs a key to unlock. Go up the long ladder on the left and investigate the mirror to find a pipe! That is it for here already. The house on the left of the station has nothing important. Finally, enter the sewers. Go up the only ladder you see and go left to another one. Run left at the top to find a passage to the next section. Here, go right until you hit the second ladder and then jump right at the top. Switch to the pipe you find a moment ago and use it on the drain pipe just right of the ladder. If you are still confused where, the middle level, last ladder on the right side. Use the pipe on the other pipe will warp you to the boss. Defeat her and collect a power-up at the bottom right. As you may have noticed, these get more expensive. Ignore the second door in this building (costs you health and money for no reason). Enter the right door of this white building. The only thing to do here is find a boss and defeat him. Start going right and go through the door in the bottom right corner. In the second section, climb to the top and go right past a closed door. There is also a large cupboard and a lone chair on the far right of this platform. Investigate the chair with the magnifying glass to warp away. Defeat the boss and collect the power up in the top right corner (the small cupboard) before leaving. Enter the mansion if you want to do the quiz, the answer is "ツチノシタ". Inside the sewers, run left and go up the ladder. Go right at the top but do not jump over any gaps just yet. Instead investigate the metal ring at the far right of this platform for MESSAGE NO.14. Finally, enter the park. Due to the bad placement of the entrance you will have to first go right and up the ladder, but your first destination is the passage in the bottom left corner. In the second section, go left and up the ladder, then further left to another passage. In the last section, jump left and investigate the first bench with the magnifying glass to find the notebook. It only has bullets and a knife, however, so you may not bother with it. One door further down the road is the quiz house. The answer is "アメノマチ". Inside the sewers, run left to drop down and continue right into a passage. In the second section, go up the nearby ladder and jump over the gaps. On the other side of the next ladder is a drain pipe, investigating it will reveal the violin! Jump right and investigate the drain pipe just before reaching the next ladder to find MESSAGE NO. 12. Continue right until you pass a ladder going down. Instead, find a brick shortly afterwards (but before the next ladder going up) which is damaged. It should be easy to find. Stand at this spot and play the violin you have just found. This should warp you to the boss section. Defeat her and find the power up on the middle section, near the center where there is a long ladder and a large window on the left of it. The item is just at this window. The house left of the station is pitch dark and requires the lamp to get around. The first house on the right has the quiz place in the left door, the answer is "ホシノミチ". The right door should be avoided as it costs you 50 pounds and some health to get back out. Leave the park for later, instead go to the house left of the station with three doors. The left door is an item shop, nothing too special for sale here. Avoid the middle door (see above for reason) and instead go into the one on the right. Inside, go up the ladder next to you and walk right to a desk. Investigate it with the magnifying glass to find the final item on your quest, the pistol. Finally, enter the park. So far there was not much to do in this city but that is because this part is pretty huge. Start by going left at the lower level and into the passage you will get to soon enough. In the second part, climb up on the left side and jump over the small gaps. Investigate the bush (not the one on the small stepping stones between the gaps) with the magnifying glass to find MESSAGE NO.1. To continue on, find another passage on the far right side at the bottom level. In the third section there are two passages to continue. You want to find the one on the right first, it is on the bottom level as well. When you get through, go right a bit more and climb down the long ladder. There should be a trash bin just left of the ladder as you descend, investigate it with the magnifying glass to find MESSAGE NO.3. Go back to the previous section and enter the passage at the middle level, quite far left. After arriving in the last part, first run left to a long ladder going all the way to the top. Here, go slightly right to find a bush with MESSAGE NO.5. Return right to the passage and this time walk right past the first ladder and jumping over a gap. When you reach the next ladder, press UP at the trash bin just left of it to warp to the boss section. If you get this correct you should automatically move on to Castle Brandy. The house further right has three locked doors. The left one leads to a dark room, use the lamp to see. Walk left to a ladder and back right at the top of it. The small window just above the entrance contains MESSAGE NO.11 if you investigate it. The middle door is even easier, simply walk left to first bookshelf you get to and investigate it for MESSAGE NO.7. The right door leads to a slightly larger room, but luckily you only have to travel to stove at the far left side of this platform to find MESSAGE NO.6. As you can ignore the house left of the station, the last place to visit are the sewers. As you soon as you start, do not move and instead investigate the drain pipe behind you to find the Message NO.15. Ascend the ladders and run left at the top to find a passage. Walk right and descend the ladder when you get the chance, the drop off into the gap on the left which would normally kill you. Instead you will warp to the boss section. Kill her and pick up the power-up at the right-most water pipe at the bottom level, which is actually slightly left of the center. ******************************************************************************* If you have not solved all the quizzes up to this point, you will not get the second chance to do the quiz in Glasgow. You must have missed one, or maybe input the wrong answer without noticing (usually you lose a large chunk of health to make this easy to spot). ******************************************************************************* --------------- | Castle Brandy | --------------- This castle is quite large and confusing, but knowing where to go will make it a breeze. Start out by walking right past the two sets of ladder and take the third up to an obvious passage. Jump right past the door you came through and continue until you reach another passage. Jump right over the doorway as before and stand underneath the coat of arms. At this point you need two things: have your rating at 100% (just beat up more people here if you have been neglecting this so far) and a second controller. It may be possible to unplug yours and into the second slot but I have not tried myself. Either way, when your rating is at max, stand underneath the coat of arms and press A and B together on the second controller to warp to the final boss. This guy has the biggest health amount from the looks of it, but if you have enough ammo you can take him out without ever being in danger of getting hurt. Of course that would take a massive amount of bullets and time. If you are not afraid to get zapped a bit, whip out your knife (or your leg) to deal some damage.
