INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Power Soccer' for the NES, released by Tokuma Shoten in 1990. This game is a soccer (football) simuation, and albeit its name has nothing to do with the sport called "Power Soccer" itself. It is in fact a five-a-side style arcade game. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== Controls: ````````` D-Pad Directions SELECT Menu Cycle START Pause For outfielders, use B to slide if you do not have the ball, and A to switch to the next player. The player with the white dust cloud behind him is the one you are currently controlling. In the penalty box, the player has some obvious signs around his head that he is on control. When you are in control, pass with B and the direction you want to get the ball to. You can try to score a goal when you get close to the penalty box. The A button is now used for shooting. The goalkeeper uses B to dive for the ball, then kicking it away. Throw-ins, kick-offs and goal kicks are a major downer in this game. You may control which direction the player is facing, but it will always result in a poor effort. Each half is 45 minutes long. It counts down the minutes rather than show the elapsed time most people might be used to in football (soccer). 45 game minutes is around 5 minutes in real time. Should the game be tied after normal time, there are two halfs of 10 game minutes to be played. If there is still no winner at this point, penalty kicks will be taken to decide one. Formation: `````````` There are several formations to pick from. As you start 1 Player mode you can only select the two basic ones. Choose the one that fits best to your playing style, but it is mainly either three attackers for an offensive stance or three defenders for having more guys in the back. Tips: ````` Eh, this game is really, really tough?! So what could you do to improve your chances of not losing 10-0 each and every time? - At no point think this a modern football video game where the closes player is in your control. You must switch over each time. It is something you need to get used or you will have plenty of situations where you lose the ball because you forgot to do just that. - When you want to pass to another player, you want to switch control as soon as you can. If you do not, the game will think you still wish to control the previous player and the closest player will just stand around foolishly. - Instead of passing to your players up front, where they are most likely marked by two opponents anyway, try passing into an open area around the penalty box and run for it. You have a good chance to arrive there first, then take a shot. - Do not jump around like an idiot with the goalkeeper. Think of every chance the other team gets as a penalty shootout, because as soon as the game switches to the close-up view the defenders will never bother to do anything to help out. You may still control one outfielder's movements, but as it moves the goalkeeper at the same time you probably want to make sure the goal is covered rather than moving him to the sides. And you can not tackle anyway without the goalkeeper jumping at the same time. The CPU does not have this problem, how nice... - There is no offside in this game, just thought I should let you know. - I have scored goals with the pass button, because the goalkeeper seems to not go for those many times. He can be a king at blocking shots in the top corners but he does not like to dive for those "mistakes". These lobs tend to go high so try to get very close to the goal, at least inside the six yard box. Additionally, you could even carry the ball straight over the goal line instead of shooting at all. If not, you may just shoot straight at the keeper ACROSS goal even though the direct line 1 yard in front of you would have been an empty goal corner... - Do not bother passing in the penalty box, you will most likely lose the ball. Sorry, no great looking goals in this game. To be honest, one good tactic is to try and do single runs with one player for the entire game, it seems less risky than trying on the dodgy passing system the game has to offer. -Do some time wasting. If you are one or two goals up, simply run around with the ball while the opponents try to catch you. It is easier to do around the opponent's penalty box. I once around in one for over 40 game minutes because I did not feel like playing the rest of the match. Works better on the earlier teams. With these tips you should manage to win some games, and see how the other team feels like celebrating scoring a goal when 0-7 down - they do not seem sad at all still being 6 goals behind. That is what I call a never-say-die attitude! 2-Player Mode is for two human players to play against each other. One of the teams is A and the other one is B. You can only be those two teams. =============================================================================== 03.) TEAMS & PASSWORDS G0300 =============================================================================== Teams: `````` A Team Eagle B Team Shark C Team Buffalo D Team Star E Team Fire F Team Pow(e)r G Team Bomber Beat the last team to be crowned champion. FAQ G0400 =============================================================================== 1.) Wait, why are you referring to 'soccer' as 'football'? In most parts of the world, football is what the US refers to as soccer. Football on the other hand, is often referred to as "American Football" in countries where that sport is not so popular (which is most of them). Got it? 2.) Why do all the players look the same? Yeah that is the question of the day. Must be a sextet-a-side football tournament or something. Joke aside, this is a cheap way to save programming time and seeing that none of the players have any variety in skills nor have names, it really does not matter that the entire team looks the same. 3.) Throw-ins never go very far for me. This is not just you. Well it is, but if that happens then you did not aim at a player. Try looking down the field if a player is a little further from you while you aim diagonally at him. Otherwise you will just dump the ball in front of you, and the same player who throws in cannot just take the ball. You will still most likely lose the ball by throwing it further, but that is an entirely different matter. 4.) I keep on getting thrashed, please help. Sure you have read all the tips and practiced a bit? It is not an easy game but if you can not even beat the first team after a while of playing then you most likely are not fit for any more of this. It is not a great game so do not worry about missing out on anything. 5.) I see some skill the CPU is doing yet I can not seem to pull it off. Yep, the CPU us way more skilled because it does not have to rely on shoddy controls and is a thousand times more precise when it comes to sliding tackles as well as running into your players to steal the ball. They can also move the goal keeper around unlinked with the defenders. Let's call these "features" and "challenges" rather than plain cheating. =============================================================================== YY.)
