Power Blade II FAQ/Walkthrough v1.0, 7/5/04 by Chrysaor (chrysaor@excite.com) ================= Table of Contents ================= I. Intro II. Controls III. Items IV. Power Suits V. Enemies VI. Walkthrough VII. Outro -------- I. Intro -------- First thing's first. I wrote this guide without a manual, so a bunch of the names for things are probably going to be wrong. But what's important is the gameplay, right? Don't worry, you're gonna get through this game. ------------ II. Controls ------------ D-Pad: Run, Climb ladders, Duck, Aim your boomerang/power blade A: Jump Down + A: Slide (Yup, just like Mega Man. And the similarities will continue). B: Throw boomerang/power blade. You can aim in 8 directions, but to throw downwards you have to be in the air or hanging from the ceiling (Newt suit). Select: Use energy tank Start: Pause. Press Up/Down while paused to choose a power suit. --------- III. Items --------- Hamburger: Recovers some health. It's also blue. Yummy. Small battery: Looks like a AA battery. Recovers some energy. Energy tank: Looks like a tuna can. This will stay in your inventory until you use it with Select, which recovers all of your health. Big Battery: Automatically recovers your energy when you run out. Red boomerang: Changes your blue boomerangs into red ones, increasing their damage. Two boomerangs: Increases the number of boomerangs/power blades you can have in the air at a time by one to a maximum of three. Star: Increases the maximum level of your power meter. The more power you have when you throw a boomerang/power blade, the farther it will go. The power meter depletes after throwing a boomerang and recharges quickly. --------------- IV. Power Suits --------------- Unlike the original Power Blade, the power suit is not an item to be found; you have to earn one by defeating a mid-boss, but after that you have it for the rest of the game. However, use of a power suit expends energy, and you take damage as normal while wearing it. When using a power suit, your weapon becomes the power blade, which goes through walls and does twice the damage, but doesn't return like a boomerang. Newt suit: Allows you to climb across the ceiling or on walls. Either jump toward the ceiling or toward a wall and press jump, and it will activate. Wet suit: Allows you to swim in water, and walk through water currents without slowing down. Rocket suit: Allows you to fly. Press and hold A while in the air, then use the arrow keys to fly. Release A to float slowly downward. Patriot suit: Creates two orbs which rotate around you, and fly out to absorb projectiles that enemies shoot at you. Really useful against some enemies and bosses. ---------- V. Enemies ---------- Note that some enemies only appear in certain stages. See the walkthrough for tips on defeating bosses. Floating sentries: These wave upwards and downwards and can be shot or avoided. Floor/ceiling guards: These annoyances slink along floors and ceilings. Jumping sentries: These jump and shoot while near you. Droids: These fire straight ahead when you are ahead of them. Hit 'em from below or above. Dual cannon sentries: These can shoot at head level or knee level, but are still minor annoyances. Wall cannons: These shoot in many directions, but don't move. Bubbles/generators: Blue bubbles roll out of generators in the wall. Both can be destroyed. Pogobots: These bounce around, occasionally shooting. Annoying. Shell sentries: These move along floors. They move faster if you get in their line of sight, and will open to fire if they can see you. Only then can they be destroyed. Pills/minibots: Pills explode into four minibots. Annoying. Ceiling generators: These drop pills. Running droids: These will knock you for a loop if they hit you. Fish: Not hard to kill, but they regenerate. Ball droid: These blue droids are invulnerable while in ball form. When they unravel, they shoot at you. Bomb droidlets: These will drop from the ceiling in certain places, and they explode if they touch you. Discus droid: These pink bots throw discuses at head or knee level. Goo: These can jump from floor to the ceiling. When shot, it splits into two smaller bits of goo. Airship droid: Flies striaght ahead dropping bombs to the floor below. Dive bomber droid: Flies around dropping bombs. Gemini droid: Shoots a blue laser diagonally, so named because it reminds me of the gemini laser from Mega Man 3. Bug: Found in the final stage. Crawls around on the background, occasionally shooting at you. Caterpillar: Found in the final stage. Wiggles around attached to a point in the wall. Attack the head to beat it. Slime monster: Shoots slime pools which slow your progress on the floor. When shot, they re-constitute within a few seconds. -------------- VI. Walkthrough -------------- Like Mega Man, you can choose the first four stages in any order. For simplicity I'm going to do them in order. I recommend doing Stage 1 first, because it's the easiest and because the Newt suit is really useful later in the game. Stages in Power Blade II are broken up into areas. Unlike the original Power Blade, stages are completely linear with no deviations, save the optional midboss door within the level. All of the midbosses are dragons which look and act remarkably like the Sector 2 boss in the original Power Blade. Hmm. Stage 1 ------- Area 1: Easy enough. Destroy the sentries and floorguards to continue on. Area 2: Slide under the ledge, then destroy the dual cannons and droids. Dual cannons always fire sideways, so hit them from above or below. Area 3: This section is covered by conveyor belts. Don't touch the drills in the ceiling; they'll kill you instantly. Be careful when getting the big battery. Area 4: Start by climbing to the left. The ceiling generator is vulnerable to your weapons. Grab the energy tank, then head back and to the right. You can destroy the blocks which look like four smaller blocks. Continue upward. Area 5: Jump off the platform to reach the energy tank. The platform only moves while you are standing on it. You'll have to duck under the stationary platforms to move onward. After the platform section is the door to the midboss. To defeat it, hit it with boomerangs while it's in dragon form, then jump over or slide under it when it rolls into a ball. Lather, rinse, repeat. Once he's dead, keep going to the left. Don't forget that you can use your new Newt suit to cling to the ceiling. Area 6: Keep your cool in the elevator. Don't forget that the power blade goes through walls, and about the destructible blocks. Don't let the running droids touch you. Area 7: This sections either full of tricky jumps, or a really easy walk across the ceiling. You decide. The boss is up head. Boss: Patriot droid This boss wears the Patriot suit which you'll acquire in Stage 4. Don the Newt suit, slide under the ledges he jumps on, and fire away. When he's on the ground, you can avoid his shots, but if you have even half of your life bar, you can fire away and he'll go down before you do. Stage 2 ------- Area 1: Don't touch the rising/falling ceiling. Knock out the sentries and droids quickly and slide on. Area 2: Move quickly if you want to get the big battery in the upper right. You can't destroy the black bubbles, so time your slides to avoid them. The further you start sliding from the end of the ledge, the further forward you'll go when you drop. If you fall through the bottom of the screen, you'll die, even if there's technically a ledge below you further down, so be patient. Area 3: Despite how it may look, you don't need the anything special to get the big battery. Just grab it, then jump to the door, avoiding the sparks. Area 4: This area is completely underwater. Avoid the spiked balls and fish, and get the wet suit from the midboss. Once you do, put it on and speed through to the next area. Area 5: You can dive in the pool for the energy tank, or jump over it and out of this area. Area 6: This part can be tricky. Jump off the moving platform every time the flames get too high. Being on the platform at the end of the track automatically gets you to the next area. Area 7: Stay ahead of the celing once again. Watch out for the floor guards, and remember that the ball droids are only vulnerable when open. Area 8: Once again, you can either avoid the bomb droidlets while jumping across the ledges, or use the Newt suit for an easy time. The brown fliud covering the floor isn't deadly, but can swallow you if you're too slow. Boss: Rocket droid This boss wears the Rocket suit which you'll get in Stage 3. You can either use the Newt suit to shoot it from the ceiling, avoiding the fish droids below, or use the wet suit, which is a bit more difficult. Stage 3 ------- Area 1: If you don't have the Newt suit, you'll have to use a combination of the ladders and the moving platform to make it out. If you do, you can get by just using the ladders. Area 2: Head downward and defeat the droids and ball-droids. Area 3: Plenty of obstacles to avoid here. Take out the airship and dive-bomber droids and get to the midboss, then continue on. Area 4: This is probably one of the tougher areas in the game. The giant fans will alternate between off and on and blow you around easily. Don't touch the fan blades, even when stationary. Use the rocket suit, and fly around them to higher ledges while they're off. Don't miss the big battery. Area 5: A jump from fan to fan over a bottomless pit while avoiding enemy attacks. Once again, the Newt suit makes life easier. Area 6: Short and sweet. Stay under the gemini droid's beams to avoid them and take it out. Don't let the running droid hit you. Area 7: Another tricky little section. The added strength of a power suit (doesn't matter which) will help you here against the various enemies. Boss: Newt droid This boss wears the Newt suit from Stage 1. He jumps off the walls and ceiling throwing shrikens, while two fireballs rotating around the room damaging you if you try the Newt suit. Can be tough to beat, but easy if you know how. Use the rocket suit and hover slightly above the center of the room, then fire straight left or right toward the boss. He will jump toward you throwing stars but not touch you, and your blades will destroy the stars, ending this battle in your favor within seconds with little loss of health. Stage 4 ------- The Wet suit is extremely helpful in this stage. I highly recommend getting it from Stage 3 before coming here. Area 1: Tough without a power suit, just because the ball droids and gemini droids take a few hits and are damaging. Continue on. Area 2: Quickest with the Wet suit, but easy no matter what. Destroying the ceiling guards before sliding through should go without saying. Area 3: Easy with the Wet suit, tough otherwise. Don't touch the spiked ceiling. Area 4: More fun with the Wet suit. Don't miss the big battery and energy tank. Area 5: A torrent of water sweeps across the floor, hindering movement. The Wet suit can counteract this. The midboss is here, yielding the Patriot suit. You can also use the Newt suit across the ceiling. Area 6: You can put your new Patriot suit to work almost immediately. Donning it will help you knock out the discus and missile droids right at the start. Use the fan, Newt suit, or Rocket suit to get the energy tank. Area 7: The floor moves up and down here, which can crush you against the ceiling. Only slide the the gaps in the walls when the floor is going DOWN. Boss: Twin droids This is the only boss of the first four stages that does not use abilities similar to one of your power suits. The trick is to stay near the center of the room and run or slide under the droids as they jump over you. If you him them with blades every few seconds, that will keep them from using their jump kick and slide kick, which are difficult to avoid. Don't bother using the Rocket or Newt suits to avoid them; they will merely jump into you and cause massive damage. Stage 5 ------- Once you have beaten the previous four stages, Stage 5 will become available. You're nearing the end of the game. Don't forget that you have all four power suits now at your disposal. Area 1: A straightforward area with various enemies. Laughably easy with the Patriot suit. Area 2: An interesting challenge, different from everything in the game up to this point. You're going upwards again, and moving platforms crisscross the area, but if you stand on them, they will move under you without carrying you along. Keep this in mind as you move upward, and watch out for the wall sentries. Area 3: If you slide under the dark bubbles here, there's a good chance the running droids will knock you off the ledge into a pit. Instead, use the Newt suit and dodge the bubbles and enemies along the ceiling. Area 4: Storyline stuff. Bor-ing! I have no idea who this Jacqueline chick is. She wasn't in the intro movie, so maybe it says in the manual. Be nice if I had one. Area 5: More of the moving platforms you saw earlier, only this time in a more Mega Man-like fashion. In general, if a platform you're on starts moving in a direction other than left, get off of it. The non-adventurous can use the Rocket suit. Area 6: The Patriot suit simplifies things again. If you want the big battery, DON'T just jump off the last ledge. There's nothing underneath. Instead, use the Rocket suit. Area 7: Don the Wet suit and swin/slide on through. Not too difficult. Don't miss the energy tank. Area 8: Keep the Wet suit on. Yawn. Area 9: Destroying the bubble generators before you go down will make things easier on you. Area 10: Keep the Wet suit on and go slow. Get the discus droids and running droids from underneath. Boss: Dragon droid First of all, put the Patriot suit on. That will absorb the dragon's shots. Shoot the dragon while it's in the air. Slide when it flies over you, since it will try to land on your head. If you do get hit, don't stop shooting, since that's the only way to get the dragon off the ground and into the air. If you let it stay on the ground, you'll die quick. Stage 6 ------- In true Mega Man fashion, what seems like the end isn't. The floor opens and you're dropped into a pulsating alien world. Nice. Area 1: Are you're doing here is falling. Area 2: Pretty long area. The pulsating goo on the ground isn't fatal, but sometimes it's easier to hang on the ceiling, anyway. Get through however you like. Area 3: Pretty simple. Just aim for the caterpillars' heads. Area 4: More fun with moving platforms. Watch the ceiling. Area 5: More caterpillars. It's easier to go down the ladder than try to jump down the right side. Area 6: Another area covered with slimy goop. near the midpoint, there's an area where claws crush everything in the goo pit. Better to just use the Newt suit for most of this area. Area 7: Beat the enemies in this one-room area and move on. Area 8: Same. Area 9: Another one-room area, watch the mud monster which regenerates after being shot. To get the battery, climb up the wall next to it with the Newt suit and slide into the crevice. Area 10: Get the energy tank here using the same method. Area 11: What's up with these little rooms, anyway? Area 12: Wow. Another little room. Area 13: Finally, something different. Use the Newt suit to cling to the walls here. Area 14: The claws in the goo pits show up once again. Climb across the ceiling, but make sure to get the ceiling guards. Boss: All the bosses! Yes, in time-honored Mega Man fashion, now you have to face all of the bosses from the first five stages, before you fight the big boss. Defeat them as above. Then, finally, the big boss. Big Boss: Alien Wow, the big boss is an alien. Can we say Mega Man 2? I guess this one really is an alien, though. Anyway, after all that, this boss is a cinch with the Patriot suit. Figures. Enjoy the ending. ---------- VII. Outro ---------- This FAQ is copyright 2004 Dave Harvey, aka Chrysaor.
