Pizza Pop(NES) FAQ/Walkthrough version 1.0.0 by schultw.andrez@sbcglobal.net (anti spam spoonerism) Please do not reproduce for profit without my consent. You won't be getting much profit anyway, but that's not the point. This took time and effort, and I just wanted to save a memory of an old game and the odd solutions any way I could. Please send me an email referring to me and this guide by name if you'd like to post it on your site. Ad space: http://faqs.retronintendo.com is the web page for the NES FAQ Completion Project. ================================ OUTLINE 1. INTRODUCTION 2. CONTROLS 3. STRATEGIES, ENEMIES 4. WALKTHROUGH 5. CHEATS 6. VERSIONS 7. CREDITS ================================ 1. INTRODUCTION Pizza Pop is a fun little game that's not terribly challenging but is the sort of platformer you'll probably be glad you looked at, especially if you're terrible at platformers like me. You play a pizza delivery boy who is called to deliver pizzas to dangerous places such as construction sites and haunted houses. There are some weird looking bellhop guys in orange uniforms that block your way, and there are a lot of enemies to jump on and smash with your pizza box. Overall, the game works a bit better than another game with a pizza theme(I'm looking at YOU, Wally Bear and the No! Gang) and has a nice balance of weirdness(construction workers, cats, dogs and ghosts) and standard platforming elements that, if you're not fussy, make for a fun time. 2. CONTROLS Up and down are not used. You can jump with A and control your flight left-right. Jumping allows you to land on an enemy, and if you do, you have the equivalent of jumping on an enemy from on top of them. The B button smashes someone near you. They have to be very near, though. Start pauses. 10 points in general for jumping on an enemy 50 points for killing a cat if it's splattered, 60 if it's not Same for a dog. 200 for swatting a spartan. 100 for getting a pizza 1000/1500/2000/2500 for completing a level 100 for each extra 10 seconds 10000 = extra life Bonus level points: 100* total # grabbed at the end 10 points for 1, 50 for 2, + 50 for each additional, when you push A to chuck the pizzas in the oven. Pizzas must be stacked on top of the highest pizza. The risk is if a pizza is off the tray, all fall, and as pizzas are piled up higher, you have less time to catch them. So there is a trade-off between points and time you have to collect pizzas. You do not get any extra points for collecting all 36 pizzas in a bonus round. 3. STRATEGIES, ENEMIES Most enemies, you can jump on them for ten points, but they regenerate. You have to whack them with your pizza box for them to disappear. You can also bounce on top of them, which is useful in clearing large gaps. Cats may fall from windows above and attack you. You should be able to time hitting them. Dogs jump at you, but if you stay still when they do, you can whack them. Or you can jump over them. Dogs and cats are as fast as you. You need to jump and swat at a balloon to get what's inside. Spartans with helmets can be hit if you hack at them at the right time. It is hard to jump on top of them, so your best bet may be to run under them. If you have trouble getting past a guy, use a heart and invincibility. For levels where you climb up, jumping randomly in some points can cause the barrel to fall. Knowing what (p) balloons do in advance can help you get through a level quickly. Bosses are pretty stupid. They have a specific pattern and are usually vulnerable as they go to shoot or after. Your main human nemesis stays put and generally chucks barrels at you, but walk up to him and hit him and he's a goner. 4. WALKTHROUGH In each area you get 3 minutes to complete it, or you die. 4-1. 1ST AREA: SIDEWALK Here you will run right and see a cat. When you are at the door, it will jump out. Jump up(push A) then hit B to get rid of the cat. You can also back up and swat it with pizza. Then there is a dog. You need to jump up when it is a half-screen away from you, then swat it. Jump and swat the P balloon. Jump over the fence and retreat and swat the cats. Jump over the garbage can then jump on the dog and the cat and continue. Jump on the fence then jump off it. There's an alley next where someone chucks pottery down. Jump and go right and when the cat moves, jump so you hit it. Then jump on the fence and swat the next P-balloon for a heart. Jump over the garbage can, and now cats streak down from the windows. You can probably just step aside and swat them. Jump over the fences and jump backwards if you must to avoid a cat jumping down. The (P) behind has a heart. Then there is a cat and a dog. Jump when you can and you may land on a dog then a cat. Beyond a mailbox with a guitar player and a weightlifter, there is one more dog to jump over. Then a fence. A cat will jump from the building. Take care of it, then jump and take care of the cat to the right on the fence. There's a spartan ahead you can jump over, with a hula hoop girl in the background. Wait for the spartan to jump on you and you can hit him just as he comes down. There's another cat on a fence, then 5 bouncy cats. Stay where they are about to land and swat them. Clear = 2500 Time = 100 * (seconds / 10) 4-2. 2ND AREA: WINDOWS Go up the right side. This triggers balloons that go DL. Retreat if a barrel comes after you. There's a heart balloon on the way up. Make a fake jump before you jump for real, once you see the (P) balloon. Then once you see an enemy, the barrels will go DR and you will need to jump UL as the only ledge between the windows is on the left. Keep bouncing to the top, but UR, and then you will see the enemy. You need to take a big jump from the right(the balloon is just pizza) and then walk up to him and smack him. Time it so you are there just after the barrel so you can move in. Then long jump left to the trampoline that takes you to the sky. This leads to the first boss fight, which is not hard. The fat man will toss his hat then jump at you. His jumps stun you. You simply wait 2 squares from the edge of him him and jump at him. You need to make sure you hit him on the near side of his head, and then you will bounce over him. Four hits should do it. Even if you get stunned, you should still be able to whack him. So 4-3. 3RD AREA: MOTORWAY AND SCAFFOLD Here is a motorbiking event. Watch for the falling barriers--you can see the shadows above. All you have to do to avoid them is move to a new lane. The first enemy appears in the 2nd-bottom row, then the next appears in the center. Then, 2nd top row, 2nd bottom, 2nd top from behind, bottom, and 2nd top from behind. It's okay if you wind up crashing the guys from behind. Just try to avoid the ramps that kick you into the air. You want to crash no more than once, so slow down if you do--otherwise, go full throttle right, as time is marginally critical here. You can jump over the construction worker then jump on the cat. Then drop to the right and take small short jumps to get next to the digger. When the clod is near the top of the steel fence, jump and you will jump on the clod. Then jump some more and when the clod is just below the balloon, jump again, and you can destroy the construction worker if you want. You can pretty much jump right away when you get on angled conveyors and you will go straight to a white platform where you are safe. Then you can go against the grain on the next two conveyors to hit the off switch. That starts a conveyor hook on the wood crates between the conveyors. Jump on the hook and when it is near the top, jump left. Jump on that off button and go to the center and jump up and lean left/right to catch the hook. It should move back right and then jump hard right to get to the exit. After this level, you have a brief bonus strategy with pizza flipping. You have 36 total. No bonus for perfection. B flips the pizzas into the oven, A jumps(worse than useless) and turning turns you around--moving your dish the opposite way you push, if you change direction(your dish is always behind you.) 4-4. 4TH AREA: CONSTRUCTION SCAFFOLD You can just swat construction workers, and when they stay put, jump on them for a little extra boost. They are only stunned when you hit them, so you can bounce repeatedly on them. Use the hook to jump up to the vertical girder and then you can waste time getting the pizza on the left, or you can just head up and smack the enemy with a pizza. At this top bit you need to jump on the enemy as he is drilling, and then you will bounce onto the hook. It doesn't matter which as jumping from the right to the left is easy. Jump just as one hook appears from the top, and you will catch it going up. Under the next construction worker, jump left then right. You can jump on him to avoid a R L jump, then swat the guy on the boxes and get the heart behind him. Go off to the right to swap the pink girder area for the green. Here you need to avoid the holes, which are instant death. Jump to the top and fall right. Just stun and move quickly right. The (P) is not worth it as it has a pizza, but you can swat it from the left edge of the girder above the construction worker(jump on him) if you really want to get it. It is however worth it to jump to the top and then take a long jump right to smash the guy there, then fall right and jump up. Beyond him you have pizza, and then you must fall off the left edge and hook back right. Tap to fall off and you're okay. Then jump right. Fall to get the (P) which is worth it--it's an extra guy. Then jump back. Be sure to get over the top girder and get rid of the construction worker, then run left off the edge and right onto the 3 verticals in a row. Now you go to a 3rd area with another boss fight. This one is easy, too. The guy turns into a spinning carrot, or something, and you need to jump over him and wait at the red girder by where he will wind up on the edge. He'll swing his shovel. Then run in and take a shot at him. Four hits, again. This should take 20 seconds, so don't worry if you're low on time. 4-5. 5TH AREA(HAUNTED HOUSE) Here you need to chain a few jumps on ghosts to get across some gaps and eventually get the key. Run right but be very careful for enemies from the right. Jump on whatever ghosts you see. When you see the first balloon(a heart, but it drops into the crevasse, so don't worry about it,) be prepared to jump and go hard right, adjusting for where ghosts appear. Once over the gap, that will be it for them. There's a smaller gap you don't have to use them to jump over, but it is convenient. If you miss the first ghost, go left 1 screen and back right. There'll be more ghosts and then there'll be two in a row 1 screen past the next balloon(a pizza that's not practical to get) and if you bounce on both of the ghosts in a row, you can land on the key above. Then if you go right, the door opens automatically. In the house, jump on the ghost to get on the ladder. Run under the pumpkin and jump over the gap, then jump and pop the balloon--if you are feeling risky, you can expect the ghost coming from the right to bounce you to the platform above. There will be a steady stream of them to jump on to go above, or at least jump over the gaps. You don't need them, but they make things easier. Now you can jump over the pumpkin to bounce up and down and clobber the balloon for a heart. Just be 1 body width from the edge. Jump on the chair and jump on the ghost to get over that construct, then head right to the next area. Now you can tell where the platforms are even though the light flickers on and off. Jump along the super dark bits. The balloon has a 1up and you can make straightforward jumps and drops to sneak under the pumpkins. Once back on the ground with a pumpkin to the right, jump over it. Run right in the next area for another boss. He is pretty easy. Stand 1/4 to 1/2 screen away from him and first jump when he goes off screen(he only does this the very first time,) then jump once he goes above the two candle holders(by the window,) as he goes a bit further up and jumps down at where you were. Swing at him and he will cry, then jump back up. 4-6. 6TH AREA: BRIDGES Just duck under the pogo stick policemen here. Wait a second after a fish splashes in the water to jump on it and over. There's a heart after the first fish-aided jump. Then duck udner more guys and again use a fish to bounce- jump over the broken bridge. At the edge of the bridge, pitch over and the spartan will jump at you--move back and he will fall in. Then go along. Note--if he doesn't go back, then just jump at the top of the bridge and you'll avoid his jump. There's another spartan after this where you'll have to retreat to the top of the bridge to avoid him. Now on to the water race. Shadows indicate fish that are about to pop up. You should probably just move 1 lane over(there are 5) when one appears, and be sure to avoid anyone tearing down the center. This part is not hard. Neither is the dog boss that appears right after. When it is running towards you, walk under the bouncing puppy it shoots and sock the dog. Retreat if you can and let the dog bounce another puppy at you. When room is too scarce, jump over the dog and go back to the center and duck again. The dog is only vulnerable when it is making puppies/not yelling. 7 hits take care of the dog. Then you have another pizza flipping round. I think there are 36 again. 4-7. 7TH AREA: FINAL BOSS A mystery man calls up and orders a pizza. This is, as you might guess, the final level. You need to be quick about jumping among the gears, so don't bother to pick up power-ups here. The final boss is slow, and you only have so many chances to hit him. The only power-up worth getting is at the top of the first scene, and it falls so far down that you waste time. There are few places to lose power, anyway. You can get going quickly by jumping from the middle of the stairs up. You then need to jump onto the pipes on the right and work your way up. You can sneak under the bad guy chucking barrels, wait for him to throw one, and jump and smack him. Then jump right and jump UL when the platform is at the center of the board, so you can catch the next platform. Jump UR and go to the next area. This is about being quick. Jump immediately once you land. R R L L onto the ascending platforms, then R R R onto the triangular drill, then L L L and U/L onto the ascending platform and R. Jump up along the left side and go to the UR when the balloon is at the bottom of the screen. Another right jump gets you to the boss room if you go right. There are two ways I have found to hit the boss. 1. stand outside the gears when he retracts his hand, then wait for the hand to come out and swat it back into him. Another bullet will come at you, and you can swat that too. If your timing is excellent, you can jump on both of these hand0bullets, and you can actually get punched by them, as long as you are not touching the ground. But it's best to go with swatting. 2. when he shoots something diagonally down, and it is level with you, jump in the air and be sure to steer to land on something. Maneuver yourself to the very edge but prepare to juggle. You can also swat back at him, but that is trickier than jumping, when the somewhat smart missile will look for you-- no problem if you are jumping. You need not worry about the missile going over the enemy's head, either. Each cycle takes about 25 seconds, where you get a diagonal shot, fireballs from the ceiling, he moves across as a jack in the box(jump as his head goes down,) he drops his head, he moves back across, and it all restarts. When he's not vulnerable, you need to jump over him, and if you try to hit him otherwise, nothing happens. You need to hit the enemy six times in order to win the round, which equates to two cycles. Because a cycle is about 25 seconds, you can maybe get away with just slashing the diagonal-down stuff, and you can hit a couple bullets at him, assuming you took just over a minute for the first bit. 5. VERSIONS 1.0.0: sent to GameFAQs 2/19/2008, complete 7. CREDITS Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done. Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow Dragon/Brui5ed Ego, ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog and others I forgot. OK, even Hydrophant in his current not-yet-banned message board incarnation. I am not part of his gang, but I want him to be part of mine. Thanks to odino for suggesting me this game the same day I completed it. I wouldn't have bothered writing this FAQ otherwise, probably. At least, not so soon. Hooray for coincidences! Thanks to the NES Completion Project folks for keeping it going.
