In a sense, it is, but in another, it's a whole different version. Think of comparing chess to 3D chess. What it has in common with the original Pipe Dream is that the goal is to let the water run through the pipes in the pattern that you make. Just like in Pipe Dream, the blocks disappear as the water goes through it so you cannot use those tiles again. The point is to simply travel the distance of tiles that is given below the round number. The main difference however, is the fact that there are different levels of pipes which adds a whole new dimension to the game, actually three dimensions. By pressing select, you can cycle through the levels. You will see the valves and open pipes scattered across each area. The valves will go down a level and the open pipes will go up a level. The change in levels also kill a good amount of time. Whenever the water hits those level changers, it takes a few seconds before it will start on the new level as well. Now that you have a good idea of how to actually play the game, it's time to describe the confusing HUD. Check below for a drawn layout of the HUD and I will describe it in more depth below. ROUND : XX P1SCORE:XXXXXX DISTANCE : XX __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | |__|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | |__|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | |__|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | | | |##|^V|##| |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | |__|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | |__|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | |__|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | |__|__|__| L# LEFT PIECES RIGHT PIECES * The round in the top left is what level you are on. * The distance in the top left is how many tiles you have to travel through to complete the round. * The P1 Score in the top right corner is your score for the round. * The large set of tiles on the left side is your playing field where you lay the pipes. * The L# in the bottom left is what level you are on. * The piece listed as left pieces in the bottom is what your next five pieces will be when you just hit B. The right most pipe will be the next piece you lay down. * The piece listed as right pieces in the bottom is what your next five pieces will be when you hold A and then hit B. The left most pipe will be the next piece you lay down. * The straight line in the middle is the timer. When the timer hits the bottom of the line, the water will begin moving from whatever pipe it is stuck in. * The right section is a little confusing at first. The left number is what level you are on and the right number is what level the water is on. The top half of that screen is the level you are on, the center tile is where your cursor is and the surrounding tiles are the tiles around you. The bottom half of that screen is the level the water is on, the center tile is where your cursor is and the surrounding tiles are the tiles around it. Now that the HUD is explained, I think it's important to describe the types of tiles and pipes you will run into along the game. The first four tiles below are the tiles that will be there from the start. They can go in any direction but for the sake of not drawing them over and over, I will make them all go down. The left of those four will be the starting tile, the next tile is the valve which goes up or down a level, the next tile is an open pipe which goes down a level, and the right most tile is a closed pipe which up a level. The set of tiles below it is pipes you can place. Also, please excuse my poor ASCII skills, I'm sure you can figure it out. ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ | _______ | _______ | _______ | _______ | | | | | | \ | / | | | | | | ___ | | | | S | | |__\|/__| | | XXX | | | | | | | | | | | | /|\ | | | XXX | | | | | | | | | | | | / | \ | | | | | | | | | | |___________|___________|___________|___________| ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | | | | | | | _| | | | |_ | _| |_ | _______ | _____ | | | | | | | | | | | |_ _| | |_______| | |_ | | | | | | |_____| | |_____| | |___| | | | | | | |___| | | | | | |___| | |___________|___________|___________|___________|___________|___________| | ______ | | | _| | | | | | | |____| | |___________| One last note is that in some levels there will be a monster jumping from tile to tile. They won't destroy your pipes but you can't lay pipes where they are so you have to work around them. I suggest trying to ignore them the best as you can because they move too quickly to trap. They can move from the left side to the right side or top to bottom by being along the edges but can only move one tile at a time. They also can't change levels. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 3. - Strategies _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Since I already described how to play the game above, let's describe some strategies on how to get as far as possible in the game. JUST LASTING This is the most obvious strategy and in a way, it's the simplest. The fact of the matter is at times, the best thing to do is just make long lines and trying to last as long as possible. This will work great at first so you get a hang for the game. SMALL ZIG ZAGS Small zig zags could take up a good amount of time and space in a small area. What I mean is to only use angles to connect each other in a small section and if you get enough angles, to go across the whole level. Look below for an idea of how to make small zig zags. The lines will be the break in the tiles. XX XX XXXX|XXXX XXXX|XXXX XX XX -- XX XX XXXX|XXXX XXXX|XXXX XX XX LARGE ZIG ZAGS The large zig zags are similar to the small zig zags but mainly focusing on straight pipes instead of angled pipes. Check below for a similar chart as above. XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXX XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXX XX XX -- XX XX XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXX XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXXXXXX|XXXX CHANGING LEVELS Each time the water changes level, the timer to start moving resets. I suggest making a path to the lowest level to buy as much time as possible and then work on bigger sections of pipes. CROSSING PIPES The crossing pipes are the pipes in the shape of a plus sign. You can waste a good amount of space this way by using even fewer tiles. Take advantage of the cross tiles every chance you get. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 4. - Disclaimer _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This FAQ/Walkthrough is copyrighted © 2009 to Frank Grochowski.
