Perfect Bowling FAQ Copyright Tokyo Shoseki 1989 Written By Brian P. Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Version 1.0 Dates Written: October 19th to December 14th, 2007 I dedicate this to the NES fans out there, as this one is part of the NES FAQ completion Project of 2004-2007, courtesy of the FAQ Contributor Board. We honour the most truly awesome and great system... the Nintendo Entertainment System! Never mind about Atari, Commodore 64, Colecovision, Sega Master System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, or any of the newer systems, we all know that the good old NES is where true gaming is at! Also, for Cougar. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. Also, In memory of Howler and Koonce. You two never had a good start in your lives, but you had a good time when you spent your time at my house. It was oh so unfortunate that you both had your already tragic lives cut short, but I can only hope that I helped make your life a more enjoyable experience. You too will be missed, but not forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on December 14th, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------Table Of Contents------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) Terminology 4) Rules 5) Scoring 6) Game Modes 7) Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------Introduction---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) As far as bowling games go, they all sort of lose their luster a bit with the Nintendo Wii now out, offering the closest potential for bowling on a video game console. However, perfect bowling is a quite adequate bowling game, allowing customization of your character, solid throwing controls, and some challenging opponents to match wits with, so shine up your ball, spray those shoes, and go bowl yourself a perfect game! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Controls------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will list all of the controls you will need to become an expert bowler. o----------------o | Basic Controls | o----------------o D-Pad : LEFT and RIGHT move the position of the bowler back and forth, choosing the spot to throw from. UP and DOWN choose the angle of the aim of the bowler. SELECT : No apparent use. START : Confirms menu selections. B Button: Used to alternate between sex, name, hand, and ball weight. A Button: Confirms menu selections and inputs entries for position, power, curve, etc. o--------------------o | Throwing Specifics | o--------------------o First off, figure out what kind of bowler you are, and this is done by experimenting with ball weight and developing a consistent throw. Once you figure out how your ball rolls, you can adjust your angle and aim, or add spin to the ball. For now though, we are going to cover what each type of thing you can do on a throw will do to the ball. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Positioning/Aiming ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Position your bowler on the lane where you feel most comfortable for your chances of getting a lot of the pins. If you wish to change the aim of the throw, press UP/DOWN to change the angle of the ball for when the throw is made. Press the A Button to confirm the positioning and aiming for the throw, moving on to the next step of the throwing procedures. ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Spin ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ Once the aiming and positioning is done with, the green ball on the left side of the screen will have the three holes in the ball appear. By using LEFT/RIGHT to move the position of the holes (which is how your bowler will hold the ball while throwing) will add spin to the ball. Think of the top hole on the ball as the tip of an arrow, so if you move that hole to the left side of the ball, the ball will spin towards the left side of the lane (and the reverse is true as well, right spin to move the ball to the right side of the lane). Press the A Button to confirm the amount of spin for the throw, moving on to the final step of the throwing procedure. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Power & Accuracy ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The arm of the meter begins at the 9 O-Clock position, which will be started by pressing the A Button. Press the A Button as close to the 12 O-Clock position as possible to get maximum power, which will reverse the movement of the arm of the meter. As the arm moves back towards the starting area, the new target is to press the A Button when said arm reaches the 6 O-Clock position (the line between the white and red bars). The closer to the 6 O-Clock position you are, the less deviation from the original aim and spin applied before making the throw. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Terminology---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) This section will look at some common and useful terminology in the game of bowling. Alley......: The lane that the bowler throws the ball down at the pins. Arrows.....: Sighting targets in the lane to help player align start position. Bagger.....: A term indicating consecutive strikes thrown that is preceded by a number. For instance, a three bagger = three strikes in a row, a seven bagger = seven strikes in a row. Ditch......: The gutter or the very edge of the lane. Double.....: Two strikes in succession. Foul.......: Breaking the plane of the foul line when throwing the ball Frame......: Each round is a frame, with each game consisting of ten frames. Gutter Ball: When a throw ends up in one of the two side troughs without hitting any pins. Hook.......: A ball that moves across the lane to the left rapidly (to the right for left-handed bowlers). Leave......: The number of pins remaining after the first throw in each frame. Punch Out..: Getting three strikes in the tenth frame to finish the game in style. Spare......: Knocking down the remaining pins on the second throw in a frame. Strike.....: Knocking down all pins on the first throw of a frame. Turkey.....: Three strikes in succession. Achieve three (or more) in a row to see a dancing, purple turkey in the game. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------Rules------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section will examine the rules of bowling. i) Any attempted throw must be done without breaking the foul line's plane, or else that throw is forfeited. ii) Each frame has two balls to be thrown, though if all pins are knocked down in one throw (a strike), then the second throw is not required. Also, if all pins are knocked down in two throws or less in the tenth frame, a third throw will be awarded automatically. iii) Each game consists of ten frames. iv) Whoever scores the most points will be crowned the victor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Scoring------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) This section will look at the scoring rules for bowling. i) Each pin is worth 1 point. ii) If all the pins are knocked down in a frame, extra points can be added to the score for that frame. 1 ball (or a Strike) = 10 points + the next two balls thrown 2 balls (or a Spare) = 10 points + the next ball thrown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Game Modes---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) This section will look at the game modes within the game. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Training Mode ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A single player mode that will allow you to bowl one game. It is to practice without worrying about setting up any of the details (outside of your bowlers statistics at any rate). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Game Mode ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Select the amount of games you wish to play, followed by setting up your bowler. At that point an opponent can be selected from a pre-selected list: ______ ______ ________ | Name | Hand | Weight | |______|______|________| | Jimmy| Right| 14 | |______|______|________| | Tony | Right| 15 | |______|______|________| | Jane | Left | 12 | |______|______|________| | Lucy | Left | 12 | |______|______|________| | Fred | Left | 16 | |______|______|________| | John | Right| 14 | |______|______|________| | Nancy| Left | 13 | |______|______|________| | Rose | Right| 11 | |______|______|________| The games will begin, with each bowler alternating turns, throwing the balls for their half of the frame before relinquishing the lane to the opposition. The highest scores wins! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ VS Mode ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Start off by selecting the amount of human players (minimum of 2, maximum of 4), followed by choosing the amount of games to be played. Now set-up each bowler as the players desire, confirming the choices. The games will begin, with each bowler alternating turns, throwing the balls for their half of the frame before relinquishing the lane to the opposition. The highest scores wins! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Doubles Mode ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Select the number of teams that are going to play, remembering that all the teams are going to be human controlled. Once the numbers of teams is set, each bowler must be crafted to the liking of the player who will use them, followed by confirming the choices to end the set-up. The games will begin, with each bowler on a team throwing one ball each for their frame before relinquishing the lane to the opposition, who will repeat the turn taking throwing pattern. The highest scores wins! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Final Word---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P. Although it is not the greatest bowling game ever, it can serve some purpose and yield entertainment to the masses. However, Wii Bowling is still the best bowling game out there, so go and get that fired up, if at all possible!
