INTRODUCTION Rainbow Silkroad is another of those obscure RPGs that was never released in America for whatever reason, but has had a translation patch made for it, allowing those of us who like classic games, but have no knowledge of Japanese to play. It was released in 1991 by Victor and Gaijin Productions released a patch for it in 1999. I just started playing the game and it seems to be a very fun play -- one that I would highly recommend to any fans of NES RPGs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. VERSION HISTORY 0.2 (Dec. 4, 2003) -- Arabia is done. I'm now in the second area, Persia. 0.1 (March 7, 2003) -- Getting started. A bit of walkthrough, as well as an explanation of the basics (since this game is a unique game in the world of RPGs). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. TIPS/HINTS/STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW The first thing you need to know is that this game is very different from the average RPG. My opinion is that the makers of the game decided to go for more of a "realistic" way to do things, as opposed to the "general RPG" way. a. Monsters and enemies don't drop money (yes, in real life, snakes don't carry gold). Instead, for killing them, you get license points, which help you trade better products. It's sort of like being told, "This product is a hot commodity. You have to prove your worth before being able to trade it on the market." b. Speaking of trading, that's how you get money. You start the game with a little and to get more, you have to go from town to town trading products. "Buy low, sell high" is this game's motto. Don't worry, I will be including a list of products and what they are worth at each town, so you know where to buy and where to sell. c. You don't get experience or build levels in this game. You get more hit points by buying weapons and armor. Equipment is an all-purpose item in this game. You get improved offense/defense from it (hard to tell how much, as there is no status screen in Rainbow Silkroad), as well as an improvement in hit points. Obviously, when you enter a new area, buying whatever you can snatch up should be your top priority. d. Some enemies may offer to let you leave if you give them gold. Unless death is imminent (and you don't have a prepared save point), then don't take them up on this offer -- just kill them, as it takes enough time to trade goods for money without adding to it by losing all your gold and having to start over. One thing to watch out for are hidden doors in towns. Not every door is visible, so if you see a building with no door or a building that seems larger on the outside than the inside, run into the building from the outside to find new doors. Water is important. You don't want to run out of it in the desert (or anywhere else, for that matter). You may replenish your water supply by staying at an inn, using an H2O item or by "checking" an oasis in the desert. Don't let your water meter get too low. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. WALKTHROUGH ---------------------- A. ARABIA The game starts with a brief prologue to explain the story. In a nutshell, you (Hero for this walkthrough) are the heir to the throne of the kingdom of Littleland. However, an evil person/alien/monster by the name of Zrool took over the kingdom and killed your parents, the King and Queen. The Royal Guard Radley rescued you and took you far away, where he gave you to a wet nurse to raise. Now, the hero has come of age and he's ready to embark on his quest of vengeance. You will have to travel along the Silkroad until you reach Littleland and reclaim what is yours. You start the game in the City of Damascus. The wet nurse tells you to recover all seven pieces of the Rainbow Mirror. Radley's scrolls will guide you to the mirrors. Then, she gives you five clay goods to begin your quest with. Note: Currently, you may only hold five goods. You need to buy some sort of transport to be able to carry more. Before leaving your house, take a look at your inventory. You have a Bottle, which will replenish your water supply and Scroll 1. Reading it tells you that the Moon Piece of the Mirror is in Arabia, but you have to find two gems first. Leave the house and explore Damascus. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Damascus -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trading stores: Bolt, Food, Oil, Special, Ware Bank (at banks, you may store goods and animals for free and you may store gold in 1000G increments, but you have to play a 100G charge for each 1000G you put in) Animal Store: Camel Inn: (20G to stay) Item: H20, Medkit, Tonic Arms: Dirk, Hide Armor, Hide Helmet, Hide Shield Save Point ----------- At this point, you are broke and only have five clay wares to trade. Don't trade them in this town -- they are worth more elsewhere. Instead, talk to the man in the south-central house. He will give you 100G. Go to the Arms shop and buy a Dirk with that money. By talking to the townspeople you will get a lot of information. One person tells you that a Medkit restores health and cures poison, as will the inn. You'll also find out that Magic Lamps are the homes of Jinn and that both Jerusalem and Baghdad are in the general area. You'll also get some advice on how to trade. Different people will tell you to: sell Oil in Muscat, sell Clay in Baghdad and buy Salt in Muscat and sell it here. After talking to everybody, leave town to enter the Arabian overworld. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arabian Overworld -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemies in Overworld: Adder, Arachne, Brigand, Riffraff, Sandman, Scorpion, Serpent, Snake, Thug ----------- Here is a quick overview of this part of the game. Follow the road to the right to get to Baghdad. There is a man just on the other side of Baghdad who will forbid you from going farther until you get permission from the King. If you go west from Damascus, you will reach Jerusalem. West of Jerusalem is a Pyramid, while to the south is Mecca. Follow the road south and then east from Mecca to get to Aden. To get to Muscat, head northeast through the desert to reach that town. In the desert is a lot of red-colored sand. According to a townsperson, walking in this sand will cause your water level to deplete more quickly. Also in the desert is a Bandit Lair and several oasises. The oasises look like wells. Stand on them and use the "check" command to refill your water. As for the Bandit Cave, you will recognize it because there is a man standing on it's square. Talk to him to fight a Thug. Win the battle to access the cave. As for the enemies, after you've gotten some good equipment, none of them are difficult. The Riffraff and Arachne are the weakest solo encounters. You always seem to encounter Snakes and Serpents together. Kill the Serpent first, as it is poisonous and can summon additional Snakes. The Sandman will rarely blow sand at you, which puts you to sleep. One other thing to keep in mind is that some enemies will tell you to give them your money. Only do this if you are in dire straits and sure that you will die, as they will take all of it. Anyhow, since you were told that you can sell you Clayware in Baghdad, go east and you will get there soon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Baghdad -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trading stores: Bolt, Food, Oil, Ore, Ware Bank Animal Store: Camel Inn: (20G to stay) Item: H20, Medkit, Tonic Arms: Hide Armor, Hide Helmet, Hide Shield, Spear Save Point ----------- Baghdad is the capital city of the Arabian region, so it not only is a large town, but it also has a castle. Go here first (it's in the far east part of town). In the castle, there is a man that will sell you a license for 500 LP. The only way to get LP is to kill monsters, so come back here when you've wiped out enough to get the license. By talking to other people in the area, you'll be able to figure out that it is an Oil license for sale. One of the castle rooms is the "Blessing Room". If you ever become broke, go here and the old man will give you money. I haven't been in that situation, yet, so I can't tell you if there is a catch to this arrangement. Go upstairs in the castle to talk to the King. He asks you to bring the Seer Palom to him. If you accept this mission (which you should -- a guard tells you that this is the key to getting permission to cross the border), he gives you a letter to give Palom. On this floor, there is a door that you need a key to open. Go back down the stairs and talk to either of the two men by them. They will tell you that Palom is in Mecca. Note: after talking to the king, the doors leading to the stairs became locked. They will not open again until you fulfill this mission. Go back to the town and search for information. One man says that there are two treasures in the city. To find them quickly, go to the northwest part of town and find a secret door in the building there. This door will lead to two staircases. The one on the left leads to a Dirk, the one on the right leads to 100G. An old man in town will send you to Mecca, Muscat or Damascus for 50G IF you have been to those cities before. A woman will tell you that Mecca is far south of Damascus. Another woman informs you that you should invest in Wood and Soy in this town, as they are inexpensive. There are two other places of interest in this town. First, take the stairs in the Inn to find a woman who tells you the goals for the area you are in (so if you forget what you are looking for, come here and talk to her). Also, in a building in the southwest part of town is a person who will buy any "special" goods you've collected. These items (Rugs, Honey, Tea, Dye and China) are worth a lot of money, so remember this location. My advise at this point would be to raise enough money to buy a Spear and all the Hide equipment. Sell your Clay at the Ware store and buy five Wood. Now, go to Damascus and sell the Wood and buy Clay. For each round trip, you will clear over 100G. Repeat over and over until you've bought everything you need. Yes, it may get a bit tedious, but you will improve the Hero's ability and you will get a decent number of LP. After doing this, it's time to go to Mecca, but first make a quick stop in Jerusalem on the way. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jerusalem -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Item Shop: H2O, Medkit, Tonic Save Point ----------- This small village just has a little information. A woman in a house (that you have to find the secret door to enter) asks you to pray with her. If you say "no", she'll say that Palom always would pray. If you say "yes", she will mention the Dew Prayer. Also, one person will talk about a Pyramid north of Mecca and another person will say that there are Ruins west of the Pyramid. Note: You can walk to the Pyramid now, but there is no point to doing so. As soon as you move forward, a Sphinx will confront you with a riddle. You can give the proper answer, which varies (the two I've seen are very easy with "ship" and "man" being the answers), but all that will happen at this time is that the Sphinx will say you need two gems to pass. Continue south along to road to get to Mecca. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mecca -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trading stores: Bolt, Food, Oil, Ware Bank Animal Store: Camel Inn: (20G to stay) Item: H20, Medkit, Tonic Save Point ----------- Go to the southeastern house to find Palom. Instead of simply going to Baghdad, the Seer asks you to get him some Incense before leaving. Nothing comes easy.... Most of the stores in this town are in the large building. Finding the secret door should be extremely easy. You will hear that a treasure is in the Bandit Lair and that the Pyramid is full of tricks and secrets, so you should bring plenty of supplies. One other person says that Hemp is expensive in Muscat (meaning that is where you should sell that product). Continue following the road to the south and go east when it does to get to the tiny oil village of Aden. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aden -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Item Shop: H2O, Medkit, Tonic Save Point ----------- At this point in the game, Aden is pretty worthless to you. The man next to the ship will sail you to Muscat or Hormuz if you've been there before. Muscat is nearby, but it will be a while until you see Hormuz. One woman in town tells you to invest 1000G in foods. You'll also find out that a person by the name of Harasarat owns all the oil wells. Not much to do here, so leave and walk northeast through the desert to get to Muscat. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Muscat -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trading stores: Bolt, Food, Oil, Ware Arms: Hide Armor, Hide Helmet, Hide Shield, Spear Inn: (20G to stay) Item: H20, Medkit, Tonic Special Item: Bottle, Firework, Smoke Save Point ----------- This town is important to your quest and it delivers a good deal of info about the Bandit Lair to the west. By talking to everyone, you'll find out that there is a Jinn in the cave and that one of the residents owns a Red Gem (remember how the Sphinx in the Pyramid wants two gems?), which he will trade you. He then notes that a Jinn was kidnapped and wonders if Jinns have magic lamps. For your reference, on the east side of town there are two people that can take you to cities you've visited before. Just north of the Inn, a man offers to take you to Baghdad, Mecca or Damascus for $50 (even though it's easy to walk to all these places). Also, a person will sail you to Aden, Hormuz or Karachi for $100. If you're looking to raise money (you should be trying to at least keep a couple hundred in the bank, if not more), then scrap the old Baghdad-to- Damascus plan from before and replace it with the new, improved Muscat-to- Baghdad plan. But five Clay (at 10G each) and sell them in Baghdad for $25 each, which is a 75G profit. Now buy five Wood in Baghdad (35G each) and sell them in Muscat for a healthy 60G to make a 125G profit. Repeat as many times as you want. For your information, to get from Muscat to Baghdad, simply go north along the coast. When you're ready, head west from Muscat to visit the Bandit Lair. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bandit Lair -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monsters: Bat, Ghul, Mpede, Riffraff, Thug Treasures: 100G, 300G, Lamp, Medkit (3) ----------- This place is easy. Not only are the three new enemies (Bat, Ghul, Mpede) all easy, with only the Bat's ability to call more Bats problematic, but three of the seven treasure chests contain Medkits, so if you do run into trouble, you'll be able to cure yourself easily. Still, I recommend bringing one or two healing items with you if for no other reason than to get into the habit of carrying them at all times. Nothing like being low on life with no medicine deep in a dungeon with no immediate way out to firmly teach you a lesson in why it's important to play it safe in an RPG. This is a very easy dungeon to navigate. Go straight up and then right from the entrance. There is a side room with a chest containing 100G. Stay on the main path and take the south fork when the trail splits. There will be a chest with a Medkit down here. Now, go east until the path splits again. Continue east for another MedKit and then head north. When you reach another fork in the road, take the one that leads back south and you'll find a room with a chest containing 300G. Stay on the path and you'll wind up in a room with three doors. The left room has a MedKit and the right room has 100G, but the center room is where the prize is. The treasure chest there contains a Lamp. Obtaining it causes a Jinn to appear. Grateful for being released, the Jinn will join you and ask you to give her a name. After doing so, she thanks you and tells you that you may call her anytime. The purpose of calling the Jinn is to find out what the various items you may find in the game do. The Jinn will give a brief explanation of each one, which can be quite helpful. Now, you may leave the cave. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Preparing for the Pyramid/The Pyramid -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemies in Pyramid: Arachne, Assassin, Bat, Ghul, Mummy, Newt, Scorpion, Serpent, Shaman, Snake Treasures in Pyramid: 300G, Bottle, Medkit (3), NileRod ----------- Now that you've obtained the Lamp, you have all the key ingredients you need to start a leg of the quest that will take you to the Pyramid. All that remains is to do a few trades and favors. First, go back to Muscat and talk to the man in the center house who was wondering if Jinns have magic lamps. Trade him the Lamp to get the Red Gem. Now go to Jerusalem and find the old lady who wishes to pray with you. If you choose to pray now, you'll then be able to buy Incense for 100G. Do so and go to Mecca. Give the Incense to Palom and he'll follow you to Baghdad. Note: While I'm not positive, odds are that you can do this anytime after originally finding Palom and being asked to get him incense. Go back to Baghdad and you may now get back into the castle's throne room. The grateful King gives you the Blue Gem and Vlt Key in return for bringing Palom to him. Now, before you leave the castle, do two things. First, use the Vlt Key to open the door in the southwest section of the throne room and go east on the roof until you get to a set of stairs leading to the vault. There are two chests here. One contains 1000G, while the other has a Spear. Second, assuming you have 500LP, buy the Oil License now. You are now able to trade Coal and Oil. While there may be no need to actually do so at this time, it's always good to be able to trade as many goods as possible, so don't pass up this opportunity. Now head back to the Pyramid. With both gems in hand, you'll be able to get past the Sphinx after you've solved its riddle (refer back to the "Jerusalem" section for the answers to the two riddles I was given). The Sphinx will take the gems and let you by to explore the depths of this place. The first floor is more annoying than anything. Invisible trap floors are everywhere, turning this place into a maze. In the center of the main room, you'll see a staircase down to the basement. The room there is where you will be deposited if you ever fall down a hole. There are chests to the north (Medkit) and south (300G) of the stairs, but you'll likely have to do a bit of tactical moving to get to them without falling through a hole. If playing on an emulator, freeze states are a major necessity in this area. If playing on the actual cart, prepare to be frustrated, as it will take some time (and trial and error) to navigate through this area. To the west of the stairs is the path to stairs leading to the main part of B1. Fortunately, once you get out of the major room and onto the path, there are far fewer holes to worry about. In B1, the first thing you'll notice is that there are a lot of small rooms to explore. Most of these places are completely empty, but there are four treasure chests here. Two contain Medkits, while the other two have a Bottle and NileRod (special item described as "A Pharoah's Rod). The only one that is tricky to get to is one of the two MedKit chests. To get to it, you'll have to enter an alcove in the northern part of the room and walk through a fake wall to get to the chest. After getting the four chests, follow the path from the Medkit I just mentioned to the east, where you'll eventually get to a room with six coffins. Five of the six contain monsters, so they are not to be opened (unless you like fighting for no real reason). However, the central coffin in the back row is a different story. Open it to meet Tutankamen, who is quite thirsty at the time. If you have water (either a Bottle or H20), give it to him and he'll tell you to use the NileRod to go beyond and then head to the Ruins. Go north through the doors leading out of the coffin room and use the NileRod on the next set of door to get to a set of stairs leading back to F1. From here, just head south (taking the western-most path) to escape the Pyramid. You may run into Assassins in this area, who are a bit tougher than the average baddie that you've been battling with, so be careful and use a Medkit if it becomes necessary to heal yourself. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ruins -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemies: Assassin, Bat, Mpede, Mummy, Newt Treasures: 1000G, Medkit, Moon Mirror, Scroll 2 ----------- Once you're outside of the Pyramid, you'll find out that your new location is the western edge of Arabia (the area blocked from the mainland by a river at the southern edge). Go south and you'll get to an oasis and then the Ruins. But before going into the Ruins, continue to go south and then east and you'll be able to curve about the terrain to get to a house. Here, a man will offer to build a bridge to the mainland for 100G. If you take him up on his offer, you'll be able to get to the main part of Arabia south of Mecca and west of Aden, meaning that you don't have to ever go through the Pyramid again! Take advantage of this to rest up or restock your items, if necessary, and then enter the Ruins. Compared to the Pyramid, this is a simple dungeon. While there are a decent number of encounters with Assassins, as long as you're careful, you should be okay. The rest of the enemies are pretty simple to kill. From where you enter the Ruins, go left to a set of stairs leading to the second floor. The stairs to the north leading to B1 just will take you to a time-wasting dead end, so ignore those. On the second floor, follow the path. A sidepath will lead to a Medkit and the main path will take you back to 1F. Now, go down to B1, where you find all sorts of good stuff. If you go down, you'll find a chest with 1000G. Go up and left to get to another chest. This one contains both the Moon Mirror and another Scroll from Radley. This time, he tells you to go to Persia, where you must meet the old man of the mirage. Congratulations! You've got one of the seven mirror shards....only six more to go! Leave the ruins and return to Baghdad. Talk to the King, who will say that his daughter is to marry the King of Persia and then ask you to escort her (a great way to get past the soldier barring access to Persia without permission by the King). Say "yes" and you'll get 1000G and permission to leave Arabia whenever you want. To move things along, you'll automatically be transported to the Persian capital of Tehran. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. PERSIA -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tehran -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trading stores: Bolt, Food, Fur, Oil, Ore, Special Inn (40G/night) Bank Animal Store: Camel Item: H20, Medkit, Tonic Arms: Brnz Helmet, Brnz Shield, Hide Armor Army: Hire Sol for 3000G Save Point ----------- In the castle (where you start), you'll be able to find out some information, as well as find out that you need 1000G for this land's license. Here is the pertinent information in the castle. - A cave is south of Istanbul. - Balel is an infamous official of Istanbul. - Marco Polo might know what you're looking for. Now, leave the castle to enter the town of Tehran. All sorts of shops here, including one you haven't seen yet. At the Army shop, you may buy the services of another fighter, so you won't have to fly solo any longer. In Tehran, for the cost of 3000G (which you likely don't have yet), you can purchase the help of Sol. At this town's info stand, you find that your goals for the area are: Cave, Mirage, Imp Pot, Water Mirror. The information you get from townspeople includes... - Marco Polo passed through from Astrakhan. - Persian Rugs are our special exports. - Oil is cheap here. Now, it's time to start exploring this new region. Buy new armor at the Arms shop, as the two pieces of bronze (Brnz) equipment for sale will improve your HP total by six, and then leave town. You may want to barter goods to raise some money for buying Sol at this point, as any extra help is a positive. TO BE CONTINUED.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. TRADING The primary way of raising money in this game is by buying and selling trading goods at the various towns in this game. This section will detail the buying/selling price of each good in each town, so you can determine how to make money quickly. At the end of the section, I will include the best town to buy and sell each good (that I've found as of the time I published the current version of the FAQ). Some of these listed trades may not be feasible, as the towns involved are far apart. It's up to you how much trouble you go through in order to make bargains. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Food -------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOWN Grain Soy Salt Damascus 165 120 255 Baghdad 185 100 255 Mecca 150 105 245 Muscat 145 130 205 Tehran 185 100 225 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bolt -------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOWN Cotton Hemp Silk Damascus 335 405 4950 Baghdad 365 440 5000 Mecca 310 395 5010 Muscat 305 450 4790 Tehran 375 440 4505 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ware -------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOWN Clay Wood Glass Damascus 15 50 1065 Baghdad 25 35 1020 Mecca 15 40 1040 Muscat 10 60 1100 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oil (need to purchase permit in Baghdad Castle to trade) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOWN Coal Oil Damascus 565 765 Baghdad 630 705 Mecca 580 730 Muscat 645 680 Tehran 630 680 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ore -------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOWN Onyx Jade Baghdad 1090 1505 Tehran 1090 1505 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fur -------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOWN Hide Fur Tehran 1600 2000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special (sell only) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOWN Rugs Honey Tea Dye China Baghdad 5000 7900 11000 12000 18000 Tehran 4000 6700 9700 9700 15000 So, where should you buy goods and where should you sell them? Here is my guide to the absolute lowest and highest prices in the game. There are two notes to this list. First, I'm making it as I go along in the game. Early editions of this FAQ will likely not have the best bargains in the game -- just the best for the part of the game I've completed. Second, the above charts will still be useful, as you can only access a limited number of towns early in the game and therefore, it is unlikely that you will be able to find the best deals in the beginning. Sorted by alphabetical order, here is the list (not including the sell-only special items. First is the name of the town to buy in, then the town to sell in, then the profit per unit of each good. ----------- Clay: Buy in Muscat, sell in Baghdad (+ 15G) Coal: Buy in Damascus, sell in Muscat (+ 80G) Cotton: Buy in Muscat, sell in Tehran (+ 70G) Fur: Not applicable yet. Glass: Buy in Baghdad, sell in Muscat (+ 80G) Grain: Buy in Muscat, sell in Baghdad or Tehran (+ 40G) Hemp: Buy in Mecca, sell in Muscat (+ 55G) Hide: Not applicable yet. Jade: Not applicable yet. Snake green snake (1) 2 Thug green/flesh bandit 5 May demand gold. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. WEAPONS AND ARMOR First, I have found no way to determine how weapons and armor affect your attack and defense powers, as there doesn't seem to be a detailed status screen. However, I can tell you how much your hit points go up by equipping them. At least for now, consider that the more a piece of equipment boosts your hit points, the more it improves you in other facets of the game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weapon Name HP Bonus -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dirk + 2 Spear + 4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Armor Name HP Bonus -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hide Armor + 4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Helmet Name HP Bonus -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hide Helmet + 3 Brnz Helmet + 6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shield Name HP Bonus -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hide Shield + 3 Brnz Shield + 6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9.
