Nankoku Shirei!! Spy vs. Spy FAQ/Walkthrough Copyright Kemco 1987 Written By Brian P. Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Version 1.0 Dates Written: January 12th, 2013 I dedicate this one to NES FAQ Completion Project. I am doing this FAQ after five years away to attempt to help the project inch closer to completion, as well as just get another FAQ under my belt. Been a long time, as I have been consumed with my channel on YouTube (brisulph), but FAQing was my first big online presence in relation to games. Also, for Cougar, Howler, Koonce, Gracey, Frisky, and Copernicus. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted FAQ on January 12th, 2013 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------Table Of Contents------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) How To Escape The Level 4) Items 5) Boobie Traps 6) Strategies 7) Codes 8) Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Introduction------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) The following is my interpretation of the events of the game, and may not reflect the actual happenings. The Black Spy and White Spy are back! This time, they are looking for three missile components scattered across a tropical island, all the while trying to outtrap and outthink their rival Spy! Assemble the missile components, grab a weapon, set some traps, and be sure to get to your Submarine BEFORE the Volcano goes KABLOOEY! To the victor goes the spoils! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------Controls--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will look at the controls for your Spy. D-Pad : LEFT, RIGHT, UP, and DOWN will move the Spy in the corresponding direction pressed. SELECT : No apparent use. START : Pauses/unpauses the game. B Button: Cycles through the potential traps you can set, ending with a shot of the island map, followed by going back to the regular, ready to fight/search mode. Holding B will also allow your Spy to run, provided he is not too hurt from traps/fighting. A Button: The Spy will search the ground, set a trap, or attack a fellow Spy with this button. It also is important to note than when a fight starts, both Spies will be placed on one half of the screen. If your Spy seemingly disappears all of a sudden, check the opposing player's screen, as he will likely be there, about to face an opposing foe in a duel to the death! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------How To Escape The Level--------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) This section will detail what you need to do to escape the level. You must complete these steps (in order) to get off the doomed volcanic island. STEP#1: Find the three missile components. STEP#2: Locate the submarine on your map. STEP#3: Reach the submarine without the other spy being on the same screen. STEP#4: YOU WIN! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------Items------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section details the items you can find on the island, as well as what happens to the items if you die with them in hand. o--------------------o | Missile Components | o--------------------o There are three Missile Components that must be obtained... the Body, the Nose, and the Tail. Once all three are in your possession, the music changes, and it is time to go and beat feet for the submarine! o---------o | Weapons | o---------o There are two weapons in the game... the Staff, and the Knife. If you have the Staff, a Letter "S" appears near your life bar, and this item will double your attack power. If you have the Knife, the Letter "K" appears near your life bar, and this item will also triple your attack power AND speed up your attacking time. The Knife is definitely the preferred choice of the two weapons. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Bobbie Traps-------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) This section will detail the power and effects of the Boobie Traps that either Spy can employ in-game. o------------o | Dig A Hole | o------------o Represented as a shovel (first boobie trap in the cycle of traps), aim for any piece of open beach, pressing A the first time to dig a visible hole, and then press A to cover up the hole, making it look like an item that can be dug up. Any spy falling victim to one of these will lose 2 Health Points. o-------o | Snare | o-------o The Snare is represented by a rope (second boobie trap in the cycle of traps), aim for the top of any nearby brown barked tree. When any Spy nears that tree, they will get hauled up into a the tree for a few seconds. Any Spy falling victim to one of these will lose 3 Health Points. o---------o | Coconut | o---------o Represented a brown coconut (third boobie trap in the cycle of traps), place the Coconut in any nearby brown barked tree. When any Spy walks under that tree, they will be incapacitated for a few seconds by the falling produce. Any Spy falling victim to one of these will lose 3 Health Points. o----------o | Landmine | o----------o Represented a black disc (fourth boobie trap in the cycle of traps), aim for any piece of open beach, pressing A to bury the explosive ordinance while making it appear as a possible buried item. If a Spy walks near this device, it will explode, knocking them down for several seconds. Any Spy falling victim to one of these will lose 2 Health Points. Also note that there are naturally occurring traps within the game, but they DO NOT have any visible clue of being there! So, tread carefully on those sandy shores. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Strategies--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) This section will detail strategies to use to make sure you are the victor in this match of wits and brain with the opposing Spy. i. Grabbing the Missile Components seem like the most important part of the game (and it is), but perhaps even more important is finding a good weapon. If you have the Knife, you are in a far superior position to win a fight, so keep digging up holes early on in the map, even if your map does not show a Missile Component in that area. ii. If your opponent has the Knife (or Staff and you are weaponless), it is advisable to run away, create some room between you and the enemy Spy, and try to lure them into some traps, or even lay some of your own while on the run (though this is very difficult). iii. If you find some Missile Components early on, you can try to bury them in a spot where an opposing Spy might walk into a trap from a tree. This is an excellent way to weaken a foe, allowing you to swoop in and finish them off once they recover from the trap. iv. Check your map constantly! You can see where the Missile Components are, where the opposing Spy is, and even find the submarine. It also will display when you are on the edge of an island, allowing you to avoid screen changes that lead to an instant death due to drowning. v. Sometimes it is better to bury the Missile Components and go kill the enemy Spy, and then re-obtain your Missile Components. If you die with Missile Components in hand, the pieces will scatter all over the island, but if you bury them before dying, you can sometimes get them back before the enemy Spy can find them (especially if you bury them near Holes and Landmines you set up). vi. If an opposing Spy looks to be on their way to getting all the Missile Components, go and get in front of the submarine beach. This will force the opposition to fight through you to get there, and it gets doubly hard if you set some traps for them to deal with as well. vii. If you stand still, you will regain health over time. You can lay some traps as a barrier to the opposing Spy, buying some downtime to allow the healing to begin. viii. Although it is very annoying to the opposing player, and it requires excellent memory on your part, you can boobie trap entrance and exits from the various screens so that the opposition will immediately get hurt when changing screens, with no chance to avoid the Holes/Landmines. This also can be applied to the spawn point for the opposing Spy, forcing them to take damage to get away from their starting spot after they die. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------Codes------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) This section will look at some hidden codes within the game. o-----------o | Music Box | o-----------o When the game is over (ie the victorious Spy is in his sub with the woman, ready to embark from the doomed island), hold the A + B Buttons on any controller. When the submarine leaves the screen, the Music Box will appear for you to listen to any of the games soundtracks. This is useful, if you want to hear it without laughing Spies and fights going in the background. o---------------o | Staff Credits | o---------------o While on the Music Box screen, press the RIGHT + A + B Buttons on the second controller to bring up the staff credits. However, note that the screen will not change on its own, so scroll up/down to the other page, bringing up one half of the staff credits, followed by scrolling back to the previous page to see the rest of the credits. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Final Word--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P.
