GAMEPLAY ============================================================================= Game Screen ----------- On the game screen will be displayed several items. It is divided into 3 parts: top screen, middle screen, and bottom screen. The top screen has 4 items. The first two are long meters. The top meter is your remaining life. It will reduce each time you get hit by an enemy. When the meter disappears, you will lose one life. Below your meter will be the enemy's life meter. It will reduce each time you hit an enemy. When it disappears, the enemy is defeated. The life meter of the last enemy that you hit is the one that is displayed. Keep in mind that each enemy has his/her own life meter. At the top right of the screen are two numbers listed next to letters. The first is the round indicator (RD). It tells you which round of a possible 5 that you are currently in. The second is the player indicator (PL). It shows you how many extra lives you have remaining. Lose all your lives and you'll be brought to the game over screen where you can choose to continue if you still have extra continues left. The middle of the screen is where the action takes place. Your character is onscreen along with your enemies. Up to two enemies may be on the screen at any time. The bottom of the screen deals with experience. The left part has a level indicator that has six slots. The slots will be filled to the amount equal to your current level. So if you are level 4, four slots will be filled. To the right are two numbers separated by a backslash (/). The left number is your current experience point total. The right number is the amount of experience needed to reach the next level. Your current total will reset to zero for each level that you gain. After you reach level six, both experience numbers will be replaced with hyphens (-). The Scoring System ================== The game does not use a regular point based scoring system. Instead, you get "experience points" for defeating enemies or grabbing special items. The amount you get depends on what move you used to kill the enemy. Below is a table of all the possible moves you can use to kill an enemy along with the corresponding amount of experience points awarded. Experience point values awarded ------------------------------- Here is the list of the possible experience points awarded for each attack. *note special attack is the attack used when pressing both A and B at the same time. Cody's Points ------------- Punch (regular) 2 pts Punch (uppercut) 4 pts Jump Kick 1 pt Knee Drop 3 pts Special Attack 2 pts Super Technique 6 pts Over the Shoulder Throw 4 pts Knee Bash (1st or 2nd bashes) 4 pts Knee Bash (3rd bash) 6 pts Knife Stab 1 pt Knife Throw 4 pts Knock into pit 1 pt Guy's Points ------------ Punch (regular) 2 pts Punch (somersault) 4 pts Jump Kick 1 pt Elbow Drop 3 pts Special Attack 2 pts Super Technique (1 kick hits) 4 pts Super Technique (2 kicks hit) 5 pts Back Roll Toss 4 pts Knee Bash (1st or 2nd bashes) 4 pts Knee Bash (3rd bash) 6 pts Shuriken Toss 4 pts Knock into pit 1 pt Haggar's Points --------------- Punch (regular) 2 pts Punch (standing jump kick) 4 pts Body Squat 1 pt Special Attack 2 pts Super Technique 2 pts Suplex 4 pts Piledriver 8 pts Head Butt (1st or 2nd butts) 4 pts Head Butt (3rd butt) 6 pts Mallet Hit 1 pt Knock into pit 1 pt Experience Levels Table ----------------------- Here is a table of the experience needed for each fighter to advance to the corresponding level. So according to the table, Guy would need 74 experience points to raise his level from 3 to 4. Level Cody Guy Haggar ================================= 1 - - - 2 33 27 - 3 54 45 - 4 90 74 125 5 147 122 193 6 250 210 370 ============================================================================= V. Must be level 4 or higher to use. Haggar -- The hot-tempered wrestler and mayor of Metro City. Mike Haggar is currently the mayor of Metro City. He is a former wrestler and champion street fighter. He's determined to rescue Jessica and restore peace in Metro City. Haggar's techniques ------------------- Body Squat: jump and press B while in mid-air to perform a body squat. It is effective for attacking enemies that run away or block. Suplex: grab an enemy and press B while pressing the D-Pad Left or Right to suplex him/her. Up to 3 head butts may be performed before you release the enemy. Piledriver: grab an enemy and press A jump into the air. While in the air, press B to perform a deadly piledriver. Any other enemy caught in the way of your piledriver will also get knocked down. Spinning Clothesline: press both A and B to perform a spinning clothesline. This move is useful for getting away when cornered. You will be invulnerable while doing this move. However, your life meter will go down every time you use this technique. You may not perform this move if you do not have any life remaining on the meter. Super Technique: With the speed of light, Haggar can quickly charge toward his enemy and apply a fatal wrestling move. By executing the running clothesline, he can catch most of his enemies off guard and combo them afterwards. Must be level 4 or higher to use. Enemies ------- Bred Bred is a flat hair guy. He's a pushover and his only attack is a punch attack that can hit you if you're not ready but he's otherwise easy to beat. Two P Sporting a cape and spiky hair, Two P is a very fast opponent. He likes to run around and hit you in your back. His punches are very fast and can catch you in a rapid punch combo that can result in heavy damage. Use a special attack to break out of this attack. Axl Slick-haired Axl likes a good defense as well as a good offense. He likes to block your attacks. His kicks inflict heavy damage. The best way to defeat him is with throws. He also doesn't block knee/elbow drops that often. El Gado El Gado wears a beehive-shaped hat and has a beard. He is another quick opponent. He has knives that he can throw at you. Punch them down or avoid them altogether. He will use the knives to stab you as well. He also uses a quick jumping knife attack that can inflict heavy damage. He will pause momentarily before using this attack so use that opportunity to get out of the way. El Gado's last attack is to slide and trip you up. Poison Don't let this cute girl's looks fool you. She is fast and has two attacks. The first is a slap attack that can catch you in a combo similar to Two P's rapid punches. The other attack is a somersault kick that can inflict medium damage. Andore The big and powerful muscleman of the gang, Andore is slow but strong. He has a shoulder charge attack that will inflict heavy damage if you get hit. He'll use it when he is at a distance from you. His punches also inflict medium damage so dodge those too. Bosses ------ Thrasher Haggar and his friends must start their journey in the slums of Metro City. There Thrasher, a cool blonde with shades, will be waiting to put a stop to their mission. Being at the bottom of the totem pole, Thrasher must do whatever it takes to prove his worthiness to the Mad Gear Gang. Katana Riverside is ruled by Katana. If you want to go through, you'll have to destroy the sword-swinging samurai. He's quick with his sword, so be very careful. He has a twin brother who rules the factory. But it has been rumored that a third may exist. Abigail Abigail is not your typical muscle-head. He's got brains and brawn. He's been exercising his mind by reading trivia. So if you want to get past Old Town, you'll have to answer his questions or he'll plant a big wet kiss on your cheek. Katana II This is another Katana brother that you'll encounter. He heads the factory where weapons are produced for the Mad Gear Gang. He thinks like his brother, so use the same tactics to defeat him. Abigail II He guards the first part of the Bay Area. He fights exactly like Abigail. Katana III The third and rumored Katana brother guards the second part of the Bay Area. He fights like Katana II so be ready. Belger Leader of Mad Gear and the one who kidnapped Jessica. Half man and half machine, Belger is 100% mean. He'll do anything to keep Jessica for himself and that includes defeating the likes of you. Other ----- Jessica The beautiful daughter of Metro City's mayor, Mike Haggar. She has been kidnapped and is waiting for Cody, Guy, and Haggar to rescue her. ============================================================================= VI. ITEMS ============================================================================= As you fight your way through the streets of Metro City, you will find steel drums. Break these open by punching or kicking them and you may find some power-up items. Food: Pick these up to increase your strength. Consuming various types of food will give you different amounts of energy. If you pick up food when your strength is full it will give you experience points. Cake: Give you 16 exp Soda: Gives you 8 exp Apple: Gives you 24 exp Chicken: Gives you 32 exp Heart: Every time you pick one of theses up, it will give you an extra life. Mobi: Pick these up and it will give you two extra lives. Money Bag: Collecting these will give you an extra continue. Also inside steel drums are weapons you can use. If you're lucky enough to find these, simply stand over them and pick 'em up with the B button. Now start swinging away at your enemies!! Certain weapons will only be available to certain characters. Knife: Being a skilled knife fighter, Cody is not afraid to challenge anyone with a knife or a sword. Shuriken: With the skills of a ninja, Guy can throw this weapon with great speed and accuracy. You get 8 shurikens to throw. Oversized Mallet: With the experience of a wrestler, Haggar is the only one with enough strength to swing the oversized mallet. ============================================================================= VII. WALKTHROUGH ============================================================================= This walkthrough will guide you through the entire game. I assume that you know to attack all your enemies. There are places in the game where the screen stops scrolling. Then enemies come out. The game randomizes which enemies come out so don't be alarmed if you encounter different enemies than in my walkthrough during these parts. As always, feel free to deviate from my strategies. Use as much/little as you need. Round 1: Slum ============== Area 1 ------ Enemies: 13 (Axl, Bred, Two P) It's the first round so practice all your moves. Then go right when you're ready. Keep going and you'll see Bred drinking a soda. Don't get near him. There is a door in the background. Move just to the right of it and Two P will comes fight you. Now go back left and beat up Two P first. Try to use the technique that gives your character the most experience points possible (Cody/Guy use knee bashes, Haggar use piledriver). After beating Two P up, go right and beat Bred who happened to just sit there while his buddy was getting pummeled by you. Now go right and the screen will stop scrolling after a while. Bred and Two P come out. Beat them both up. Try to kill Two P off first because he's more dangerous than Bred. Go right and you'll see Axl (green guy). He'll start walking towards you. Let him come to you and start attacking. He'll block most of your attacks. Punch him and run up and grab him while he's still blocking. Then throw him away. Repeat this process until he's dead. Now go right and Bred will come out. Kill him. Go right and the screen will stop scrolling. Bred and Two P will come out. You should be able to kill off Bred before Two P comes out. Then finish off Two P. Go right and you'll see Bred leaning against the building. Go right until he starts attacking you. Kill him like usual. Go right and you'll see Two P sitting down. Do not approach him yet. Look at the background. You should see a sign that says "2 Room 555-6262." Look below that and the red wall has two blue splotches on it. Walk to the right until you're below the left blue splotch. The screen should stop scrolling by now. Axl will come out. Two P will remain sitting though. Go left and beat up Axl. Then wait. Another Axl will come out soon. Beat him up too. Wait again and a third Axl will come out. Kill him. Now go after Two P. You'll move to the second area after you defeat Two P. Area 2 ------ Enemies: 4 (Andore, Bred, Two P) Go right and the screen will stop scrolling. Five steel drums will roll at you. Move up and down to line yourself up with each one and punch it to break it open. A random item may be found. The first drum is always a chicken. The other drums contain random items. You may get something or you may get nothing at all. Be sure to collect the items before the drums are all smashed or roll away or the items will disappear. Go right and you'll see Andore. There's a sign to the far right. It reads "Movies." You should see just "MO." Andore will attack you when you see just those letters. Beat him up carefully as his attacks all cause serious damage. Then go right and Two P will attack. Kill him. Then go right and the screen stops scrolling. Bred and Two P come out. You should be able to kill off Bred before Two P comes out. Then kill Two P. You'll now automatically move to the right and face Thrasher. Boss: Thrasher Thrasher will start talking to you. He'll ask you to bow down to him. Say "NO" to cause a little damage to him. Then he'll say that he rules the streets. Say "NO" again to cause some more damage to him. You'll then begin fighting. Thrasher hits hard so avoid his attacks. He has a jumping body squat that he can use to travel across the screen. He also has a double chop punch attack that he'll use when you get close. Attack Thrasher with a barrage of jump kicks. It is mildly difficult to grab Thrasher. It's easier if you use a set up move like the elbow/knee drop. Get away from Thrasher when you knock him down or he'll get up and rapid punch you. Just use a hit and run tactic by moving up and down to avoid Thrasher. Then get in and use jump kicks to hurt him. Continue this process until you defeat him. Round 2: Riverside =================== Area 1 ------ Enemies: 13 (Axl, Bred, El Gado, Two P) Go right and Bred will come out. Kill him. Go right and you'll see El Gado standing there. He'll come at you. Don't let him get too far from you or he'll use knives. Always move up and down so he can't hit you. Kill him quickly. Go right until the screen stops scrolling. You'll face the familiar duo of Bred and Two P. Kill them like usual. Then go right and you'll see Two P sitting on a bench. Move right until he starts to attack. Then kill him off. Go right and you'll see Axl. Kill him. Then go right and the screen will stop scrolling. Yep, it's Bred and Two P again. Kill them both. Go right and you'll see Axl. Kill him. Go right and you'll see Bred having a drink. Move up slowly until he starts attacking. Kill him. Go right and the screen stops scrolling. Bred and Two P come out. Kill them and Axl comes out. Kill him too. You'll move on to area 2. Area 2 ------ Enemies: 19 (Andore, Bred, El Gado, Poison, Two P) Go right and you'll soon see Bred sitting on a bench. Slowly move up and Poison will come out to attack. Watch out for her attacks and kill her like everyone else. Then go up and kill Bred. Go right and the screen stops again. Bred and Two P come out first. Kill them. Now Two P and Poison come out. Lastly, Bred comes out. Kill them off and then go right. You'll see Andore. Kill him. Go right and Poison is waiting. Kill her. Go right and the screen stops. Bred and Two P come out. Kill them both. Poison will come out afterwards. Kill her. Go right and the screen stops. Five steel drums will roll out. The first is chicken. The rest are random. Break them all then go right. You'll see El Gado. Kill him. Go right and you'll face Poison. Kill her. Go right and the screen stops. You'll face Bred and El Gado. Poison and Bred come out next. Then Poison comes out once more. Kill them all and you'll move on to face Katana. Boss: Katana Katana is wearing full body armor so your punches will do little damage to him. Grabbing him is too risky so jump kicks will be the key to victory. First avoid Katana's charging slash attack. Then you can go up and grab him before he recovers. Always stay far away from Katana so he can't hit you with his charge attack. He can also slash you if you get too close. Run up and jump kick him only when it's safe to do so. Jump kick somewhat early or his attack will hit you before you land your kick. Punches are too risky to use so just use jump kicks and throws to win. Repeat until he's dead. Round 2 Bonus Round This bonus round will have 20 steel drums roll out. The prize you get is based on how many drums you successfully break. Here are the prizes. Drums Broken Prize --------------------------- 0-7 No bonus 8-9 8 exp 10-11 16 exp 12-13 24 exp 14-15 32 exp 16-17 1-up 18-19 1 continue 20 2-up Round 3: Old Town ================== Area 1 ------ Enemies: 13 (Andore, Axl, Bred, El Gado, Two P) This round has many pits that can kill you if you fall in. You can also knock your enemies in the pits to kill them but you'll only get one point for doing this. Go right and you'll see a pit. Axl comes out. Kill him. Go right and Two P charges out. Kill him. Go right and the screen stops. Bred and El Gado come out. Kill them. Go right and Andore comes out. Kill him while avoiding the pits. Go right and you'll see El Gado. Let him come to you and kill him. Go right and the screen stops. Stay at the top. Andore and El Gado will come out. You'll need to be extra careful when fighting them. Don't fall in the pits. Go right until El Gado comes out. Kill him. Go right and Axl is there. Kill him. Go right and the screen stops. Bred and El Gado come out. Kill both. Then Axl comes out. Kill him to move on to area 2. Area 2 ------ Enemies: 11 (Bred, El Gado, Poison, Two P) Go right and you'll see Bred come out. Keep an eye on the window closest to Bred's side of the screen. Kill Bred. Now stay in the middle. Walk to the right and the moment you pass the window, Poison will drop down from the top of the screen. Keep moving or just move down to avoid getting hit. Kill her. Go right and the screen stops. Bred and Two P come out. Kill both. Then Poison and Bred come out. Kill them. Go right and the screen stops again. Five steel drums will roll out. Break them and then go to the right. You should see windows in the background. Look at the column to the left of the second window. Poison will drop down from the top of the screen when you pass that column. Quickly move back to the left to avoid getting hit. Then kill Poison. Go right. El Gado will drop down. Keep going right to avoid getting hit. Poison will also come out. Kill both. Then Bred and El Gado come out. Kill them and you'll go on to face Abigail. Boss: Abigail This big muscle-head has a few attacks. The first attack will cause his face to turn red and then he'll run at you and punch. Do not get hit by this attack or you'll take major damage. Another attack is to grab you and start kissing you. He can do up to three kisses. This attack also will inflict heavy damage. He also has an uppercut punch that can knock you out of the air. The key to victory will be either jump kicks or to use your super technique. You should be up to level 4 experience by now so you can try to use the super technique from a distance. Abigail will usually walk right into it. If he avoids, you can quickly do a jump kick or try to get away. You can also throw him after he misses a punch but do so sparingly as he's more likely to grab you instead. Get away from him when you knock him down or he'll get up and uppercut you. Repeat this strategy and Abigail will be defeated in no time at all. Cody can use his super technique here for an easy victory. Round 4: Factory ================== Area 1 ------ Enemies: 10 (Axl, Bred, Two P) Go right and you'll see Bred leaning against warehouse #2. Slowly walk up until Axl appears. Kill him first. Then go and kill Bred. Go right and the screen stops. Bred and Two P come out. Axl and Bred are next. Kill them and then go right. You'll see Two P sitting on the ground. Slowly go right until Axl appears. Kill him first. Then go up and kill Two P. Go right and the screen stops scrolling. Bred and Two P come out. Kill them both. Go right and you'll move on to the next area. Area 2 ------ Enemies: 12 (Axl, El Gado, Poison) You're in an elevator shaft. You start off on B1. You'll need to fight your way down to B4. You'll fight Axl and El Gado first. Do not fall off either edge of the elevator or you'll die. It may be wise to throw/knock off the enemies off the elevator. Picking up the weapon on the elevator is up to you. Constantly jump kicking along with some throws will be the best strategy to use. Kill them and more enemies come down. You'll get either Axl, El Gado, or Poison to drop down. Kill a grand total of 12 enemies to move on to area 3. Area 3 ------ Enemies: 6 (Axl, Bred, El Gado, Two P) Get the chicken. Go right and El Gado will drop down after you pass the second picture on the wall. Keep moving to avoid his attack. You'll see Bred leaning against the wall. Don't get near him yet. Kill El Gado first. Then move to the right slowly. Bred should still be leaning against the wall. Move up enough and Two P will come out. Kill him and a second Two P comes out. Kill him and another Two P will come out. Kill him and a fourth Two P will come out. Kill him. Bred should have been leaning against the wall the entire time. Go up and kill him now. Then go right and face Katana II. Boss: Katana II This is Katana's brother, also called Katana. However, I'll call him Katana II from now on. If you're at full life, Katana will say some words and start fighting. However, if you're hurt, Katana will offer you some water. Say "YES" to get your life recovered. Then he'll start fighting. Katana II fights like his brother. He'll use the same charging slash attack and regular slash attack. He's also wearing the same armor so punches won't be that effective. He's also vulnerable to a throw after missing his charging slash attack. He's also weak against jump kicks so use plenty of those. Employ your usual hit and run tactic against Katana II. Katana II's swords will break once you've taken off 2/3 of his life meter. He'll stop using the slash attack and use a new attack. This new attack involves him blinking and then doing a quick charge across the length of the screen. Dodge it or you'll take heavy damage. Katana II is very open to your attacks after he misses the charge. Take this opportunity to run up and throw him. Then get away before he gets up. He'll just repeat the charge attack so dodge and counter with your own attacks. Watch out as he can charge diagonally so keep your distance at all times. Repeat this strategy until he's dead. Round 4 Bonus Round This bonus round will have 20 steel drums roll out like before. However, some drums will drop down from the top of the screen this time. The prize you get is based on how many drums you successfully break. The prizes awarded are the same as round 2's bonus round. Refer to the chart listed under "Round 2 Bonus Round" for the prize chart. Round 5: Bay Area ================== Area 1 ------ Enemies: 14 (Andore, Axl, Bred, El Gado, Poison, Two P) Go right and Two P appears. Kill him. Go right a little more and Poison will drop down. Kill her. Then go right and the screen stops. Andore and Two P come out. Kill both and then Poison and Andore come out next. Kill them. Then another Poison and Two P come out. Kill them. Go right and Andore is waiting. Kill him. Go right and El Gado comes out. Kill him. Go right and the screen stops. Bred and El Gado come out. Kill them both. Axl and El Gado are next. Kill them too. Then go right to face Abigail. Sub-boss: Abigail II Abigail II is out for revenge for what you did to Abigail. He uses the same attacks as before so you know what to do. You should be at level 6 now so all your attacks will do decent damage to Abigail II. Just use the same strategy that you used against the old Abigail to beat this new one. You'll then move on to area 2. Area 2 ------ Enemies: 14 (Andore, Bred, El Gado, Poison, Two P) Pick up the apple. Go right and fight Andore. Kill him. Go right and Two P comes out. Kill him. Now go right and the screen stops. Bred and Two P come out. Kill them. Now Poison and Bred come out. Kill them too. Bred and Two P come out afterwards. Kill them and then look at the background. You should see a picture of a chicken under a knife and fork. Go up next to the sign and punch the chicken. You'll get healed. Go right and you'll see Bred drinking a soda. Go up slowly to get him to attack you. Then kill him. Go right some more and El Gado appears. Kill him too. Then go right and the screen stops. Bred and El Gado come out. Kill them both. Then Poison and Bred appear. Kill them as well. Then go right to face Katana III. Sub-boss: Katana III The final Katana brother is here. I'll call him Katana III. He fights exactly like Katana II so you know that he'll first use the charging slash attack and slash attack for phase one. Then he'll use the blinking charge attack when his swords break. Use the same hit and run strategy that you used against Katana II in this fight too. Katana III will be dead soon enough. You'll go on to area 3. Area 3 ------ Enemies: none This is the final area. Get the chicken. Then go right to fight Belger. Boss: Belger The leader of Mad Gear is finally here. He is faster than anyone else in the game and uses and several attacks in two different phases. In phase one, he run circles around you. He'll use a rapid fist attack that can catch you and potentially take all your life away if you don't break out of it. Move up and down or use your special attack to break out. Don't bother trying to grab him. Just jump kick him to death. He'll talk some more after you hurt him a little. Belger is now in phase two. He will run to one side of the screen and start firing 5 rocket fists at you. He'll fire each one at a different height so you'll most likely get hit unless you do something. That something is to jump kick or punch the rocket fist down. Belger will also do a short range hop and punch attack. He uses this to move across the screen when you get too close. The last "attack" that Belger uses isn't really an attack. He'll stop moving and start laughing. He'll do this when you get hit by a rocket fist or when he finishes firing all 5. This is your opportunity to run up and throw or punch him. Whatever you do, just inflict massive damage. Charging at Belger will do you no good because he'll just retreat to the other side of the screen. Using your special attack does practically no damage to him. Therefore, the key to beat him is to dodge his rocket fists and to let him start laughing. Then run up and hit him while he's still laughing. Then get away. Belger will use his rocket fists again. Just constantly jump kick them or dodge them. Wait for all five to be fired. Belger will laugh again after he fires them all. Run up to him and hurt him before he recovers. Repeat this process and Belger should go down shortly. ============================================================================= VIII. SECRETS AND CODES ============================================================================= How to do maximum damage combos ------------------------------- Here's how to do the most damage with each player. Cody: Use a knee drop. Then punch twice. Grab and do two knee bashes. Then do an over the shoulder throw. Guy: Use an elbow drop. Then punch twice. Grab and do two knee bashes. Then do a back roll toss. Haggar: Punch twice. Then grab and do two head butts. Finish with a piledriver. Early strength boost for Cody and Guy ------------------------------------- While Cody and Guy begin the game at level one, Haggar starts off at level three. You can however give Cody and Guy an early advantage with this trick. First, pick Haggar and let the enemy kill you. Then continue as Cody or Guy. You'll resume play with a level three Cody or Guy now. (note this trick isn't too useful because you're basically just throwing lives away. Five lives is enough for Haggar to fight his way up to the part where Cody and Guy normally would become level three at anyways.)
