------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- [MAHJONG ACADEMY] ---------------------------- --------------------------------[by Ice Queen Zero]---------------------------- --------------------------[ Nintendo Entertainment System ]-------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- o---------------------o INTRODUCTION o---------------------o I got addicted to Mahjong quick. I'm not talking about the kind where you go around trying to match tiles on a mountain of tiles. I'm talking about the kind similar to the tile game, Gin Rummy but using tiles and you compete against an opponent. I originally planned to FAQ this back in late 2011 shortly after I made an FAQ for Poker Mahjong but it slipped my mind so there is no time like the present time to get it overwith. o---------------------o DISCLAIMER o---------------------o Mahjong Academy and its characters are trademarks of Sachen and all of its copyrights belong to them. Your job is to climb the ranks in the school of Mahjong Academy. o---------------------o CONTROLS o---------------------o A button = draw tile, distile B button = declare win (when you have a winning hand) Start = Start game, pause/unpause Left/Right = cycle through tiles after drawing tile. Left = Declare Chi after opponent distiles eligible tile. Right = Declare Pong after opponent distiles eligible tile. Down = Declare Kong after opponent distiles eligible tile or you got a Pong that's eligible upon drawing a tile. o---------------------o GAMEPLAY o---------------------o The tiles will be dealt out evenly until each side has 13 tiles each. The dice are rolled to determine who goes first. The one who goes first is the one with the highest roll. On subsequent hands, the winner of the last hand goes first. If there is a draw (stockpile reaches 0), tiles will be collected and re-dealt and the last person to go first will go first again. I bet you are wondering what all this Pong, Kong, and Chi stuff means. Pong is when you have 3 tiles of the same rank and suit in your hand. Kong is when you manage to get all 4 tiles of same rank and suit in your hand and you can stash it away from the hand as a bonus towards scoring. Chi refers to having numbered buttons, sticks or japanese numbers in a numerical sequence. With sticks, the ace is represented by a peacock. Japanese numbers go like this: ***** = ichi (one) *** ******* = ni (two) ***** *** ***** = san (three) ******* * * * * *** *** = shi/yon (four) *** *** * * *** * * = go (five) * ******* * * = roku (six) * *** * * *** = nana/shichi (seven) * * * * * * = hachi (eight) * **** * * * * ** = kyu (nine) ------- There are non numerical tiles that can only used as Eyes, Pongs, or Kongs. They come in black, red, green, and white. These are rare to match but give out good points if you win. ------- Press the A button to draw a tile. Choose a tile that you don't want then press the A button again to distile it. To win this hand, you must have a combination of 4 Pongs/Kongs/chis and a Pair of Eyes. Ex: 3 Pongs + 1 Chi + Eyes equals a winning hand and so does 2 Chis + 1 Pong + 1 Kong + a Pair of eyes etc. Now be careful when you are distileing. Either player can use a distileed hand to make a legal combination provided they have the other 2 (or 3 for a Kong) already in their hand. To claim a chi, press Left on the D-pad. Press Right on the D-pad to claim a Pong. Press Down on the D-pad to claim a Kong. Kongs can be claimed by also pressing down if you have all four tiles of same rank and suit in your hand at anytime including adding to a claimed Pong. However, if you do claim a set, the tiles will be turned face up. Once you have a winning hand, press the B button to claim the hand. This is the only time you can claim a pair of Eyes off the distile. In regular Mahjong there is a play called Robbing the Kong but I'm not sure if you can do that here. If you can do it, it can be done when an opponent has made a Kong and if the tile is needed to claim a Chi, you can get that top tile and claim that Chi or you can declare a winning hand from there but you can only do it immediately after the Kong is declared. As far as scoring is concerned, I'm going to pass on explaining that part since I have no clue to explain it. I just know if you manage make some bigtime plays then you will score more points. I just go with flow. Whatever points you score determines how much points you take away from the opponent. There are also seasonal titles which are not used in play and are discarded to your bouns pile automatically. They are worth bonus points if you win. There are four opponents to compete against. One thing I can say about the scoring is that the best way to test if you won or lost the war is when the loser's score is in the negatives. If that's you, then it's game over. If it's the opponent then you move on to the next opponent. Since the factor is random, I can't really give out any winning strategies to the game. You got to go at it like a chess game. Good Luck out there, you'll need it. o---------------------o CREDITS o---------------------o God for being Lord and Savior. Sachen for creating the game.
