And Pepsi-Cola. With a combination like that, a video game can't go wrong. Magic Johnson's Fast Break is a first generation basketball game for the NES, very, very, VERY primitive compared to all the newer games on the PS2, 360, and so forth. Even games for the N64 are vastly superior to this game. However, it's still fun to play a good ol' fashioned, full court 2-on-2 game. With Magic Johnson! +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= |***** {2.0} Controls and Game Modes *****| |~ ~| +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= +----------------------------------------------------------+ | Buttons | Effect | |----------------------------------------------------------| | A | Steal, Jump(Defense), Shoot(Offense) | | B | Switch players(Defense), Pass(Offense) | | D-Pad | Move player | | Start | Pause Game | | Select | Select mode on main menu | +----------------------------------------------------------+ When you first start up the game, you will see Magic Johnson. If you let the game sit for a while, you will see the credits(all three of them) and a demo. Press Start to get started. Pressing start will take you to the main menu. From here, you can select which mode that you want to play. There's one player, two player, and four player modes. For two player, you will need two controllers and four player requires a special extension. All of these games are full court, 2-on-2 games with three minute quarters. When playing four player, players 1 and 2 are on Team Blue and the other two on Team Red. In two player mode, player 1 is Team Blue and player 2 is Team Red. The goal of the game is to have the highest score after the end of four quarters, just like real basketball. When you select one player mode, you will be taken to a screen that shows five difficulties. Choose whichever you like. I'll tell you a secret. The difficulties don't actually affect how well the AI performs in the game. It really just changes the ratio of the shots that go in. At higher difficulties, your shot will go in less often while your opponent's will go in much more often. While you're playing, the top of the screen will show a bar with all the stats. On the two sides of the bar, you will see the team fouls, followed by the respective team's score, then the 24 second clock. The middle of the bar shows the game clock. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= |***** {3.0} Rules and Regulations *****| |~ ~| +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= This game follows NBA basketball rules. Here's the rules that you should know about while playing the game, for those unfamilar with the NBA. I will only list the rules that occur in the game. Obviously, there won't be things like moving screens in the game. Violations: A term meaning that you broke a rule. A violation results in a turnover; meaning your opponent gets the ball. 24 Shot Clock Violation: Failure to shoot(and hit the rim, NOT backboard) within 24 seconds. 10 Second Violation: Failure to move the ball past the halfcourt line(after inbounding) withing 10 seconds. 10 seconds is a very generous amount of time; you shouldn't run into this problem very often, if at all. In fact, 10 seconds is so generous that the current NBA changed this to 8 seconds. Halfcourt Violation: You dribbled onto your side of the court, then somehow the balls moves past the halfcourt line(the line in the middle) back to your opponents side. In this game, it'll only happen if you dribble there or pass it back. 5 Second Violation: Failure to inbound the ball within 5 seconds. Offensive Foul: This will only happen if you hold the control pad against the opponent for about five seconds while you have the ball. This is very, very rare. Or it should be. Defensive Foul: Same as above, except this time your opponent has the ball. AFAIK, you will never get called for a shooting foul. It never happened to me. 3 pointer: Any shot that comes from behind the arc is worth three points instead of two. Foul Shot: If you are fouled while in the act of shooting, you will go to the free throw line to shoot two shots, each worth one. If you are fouled while not in the act of shooting, you'll take it out of bounds UNLESS you have already commited four fouls in the quarter(team fouls, labeled at the upper left and right corners). Then you'll go to the line, no matter if you were shooting or not. Note that you can't get fouled out in this game. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= |***** {4.0} Tips *****| |~ ~| +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= 1. You will never get called for going out of bounds, no matter how you try to move your player out. 2. Attempt to steal often. There are no reach-in fouls in the game either. There IS one disadvantage though, and it's that each time you attempt to steal you'll slow down for just one second. More often than not, you will come out with the ball. Attempt to steal from the sides and front of the player, not the back. 3. Hog the ball. I know that in real life, passing is the key to victory, but the ball gets stolen VERY easily in this game. Watch the passing lanes closely and keep in mind that players without the ball will move faster than players with the ball(including on the offense). Move in a zigzag direction to avoid getting trapped near the edges of the court. Once your opponent is right on top of you, it's pretty much impossible to avoid a turnover. 4. Go for the three. For some reason, it doesn't seem like close range shots have a higher ratio of going in than three point shots. All three pointers have an equal chance to go in. I get shots from a little over halfcour all the time. You can't shoot behind the halfcourt line, so remember that. 5. Guard the inbound pass. This is the key to winning the game. The ball can only go straight and as soon as you tap A when the ball is released, you'll have it. Pass it out for a three or just hit the shot. Likewise, be careful when YOU inbound the ball. The computers can just as easily take the ball from you. The easiest way to inbound the ball is to just run all the way past the halfcourt line. Usually you won't be followed. Get the clear pass, and you'll also be ready for a bucket! +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= |***** {5.0} FAQ *****| |~ ~| +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Q: Are there any NBA players in this game? A: Other than Magic Johnson's face when you hit a three pointer, there are no references to any player or anything in the NBA at all. Q: Can you play anything besides a 2-on-2 game? A: Nope. Q: How do I avoid getting the ball stolen? A: It's hard to. Just kind of dribble at an angle before a defender can catch up to you. If they do, it's pretty hard not to create a turnover. Q: Is there an easier way to stay in front of my man? A: Use the D-Pad. Can't really do anything else. The best way to defend is to really go for the steal every time. Q: Can I change the length of the quaters or change teams? A: No. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= |***** {6.0} End *****| |~ ~| +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= I hope that this FAQ helped you gamers on the road to success.
