About Mach Rider ---------------------- a. Game History Nintendo released Mach Rider in 1985. It is a motorcycle game in which you can accelerate to an extremely high speed, hence the name mach. It was one of the few games made for NES that featured the "programmable series option." This allows the user to create their own racetrack and actually race it like a real track. Other NES games that had this feature are Wrecking Crew and Excitebike. b. Game Story It's the year 2112. The earth has been invaded by the forces of evil. Battle with the invading forces as you race from sector to sector searching for survivors. You are the earth's only hope. You are Mach Rider! c. Official Game Information Genre: Action Official Name: Mach Rider Release Date: November 21, 1985 First Release: JP (Japan) d. Screen set-up The screen during play looks like following: Score Energy Km To Go Shots (No. of shots left) Rearview Mirror Mach Rider II. NOTE !!** The are 10 tracks, one being the easiest and getting progressively harder from there to number 10. When you first start there is a box that seems to have a bunch of mixed-up orange lines. Depending on which button, A or B, that you push, you will race in a different course. **!! NOTE !!** In this type of race, there are enemies on the track as you race. You can shoot them with the B button, but remember, you are limited in the number of shots you can make. You get points every time you shoot and destroy an enemy, an bomber ball, a blue rock or a oil drum. Watch out! If the entire background gets white, it's icy! You can slip and crash VERY EASILY. SCORING: 10 PTS. FOR EACH PROGRESSIVE SECOND OF TRAVEL b. Endurance Course The endurance course is the same as a solo course, except there are now enemies. For an explanation of a solo course, please see below. SCORING: 10 PTS. FOR EACH PROGRESSIVE SECOND OF TRAVEL c. Solo Course In a solo course you have a certain distance to cover in a certain amount of time. In the first level, you must travel 22Km in 250 seconds. If you meet the requirement, you will have to travel farther but in more time. You are awarded points for speed, shots, and things you blow up (such as barrels or bomber balls). Watch for icy conditions (when the background becomes all white). SCORING: 10 PTS. FOR EACH PROGRESSIVE SECOND OF TRAVEL V. Design Mode ----------------- This is where you can design your own racetrack. This is the way the design menu looks: Fighting Course Endurance Course Solo Course Save Load Design Reset a. Fighting Course - The exact same as the original fighting course except that your own created track can be used. b. Endurance Course - The exact same as the original fighting course except that your own created track can be used. c. Solo Course - The exact same as the original solo course except that you can use your own created track. d. Save - This feature should theoretically save your created track to be saved again at a later date, but it doesn't work and just freezes the game. e. Load - This should load your saved track, but again, it only freezes the game and does nothing. f. Design - This is where you can design your own track. You can then race on your own track. Keep in mind that the game randomly places obstacles (oil spills and water spots) all over the place, you have no control over that. **!! NOTE !!** The track must stretch from the left side of the screen to the right side of the screen or you will not be able to race on it. **!! NOTE !!** f1. Design Controls __________________________________ | | D-PAD - Left/Right - Move cursor left/right | _ Nintendo | Up/Down - Move cursor up and down | _| |_ SELECT START _ _ | SELECT - Exits to Design Menu | |_ O _| (**) (**) (_) (_) | START - Nothing? | |_| B A | A BUTTON - Places course piece on track map |__________________________________| B BUTTON - Hold to move cursor to piece of track that you want to place on the track map g. Reset - Goes back to the Main Menu while still saving the track you created. VI. Game Tips * If you skid on water, oil or tacks, you can bring your bike back to an upright position by counter-steering. (Use the Control Pad to turn in the opposite direction.) * When the course changes to ice (white), it becomes slippery, and counter-steering will not be effective. * The machine gun can fire a total of 80 shots by pressing the B button. (At each press of the button, 2 shots are fired, so 40 discharges are possible.) * When the enemy is destroyed by being "BLOCKED" into a Hazard, bullets will be replenished. (not to exceed 254 bullets.) * If Mach Rider collides with the enemy at low speed, he will crash. * There is no brake for Mach Rider, so skillfully downshift and use the engine to slow your speed. * When accelerating, shift into high speed quickly by carefully matching the timing of the shifts from 1st through 4th gear (press the Control Pad once for each shift while pressing the A button continuously). This will enable you to quickly go to high speed. * If the speed decreases to the point of stopping, you cannot accelerate quickly to high speed if you remain in 4th gear. Downshift to a lower gear and accelerate up again. * If you drive onto the course shoulder, your speed will decrease. * If you hit one of the oil drums along the shoulder of the course at high speed, you will crash. * If you crash, the new Mach Rider will automatically start out in 1st gear.
